Coal bump, or coal burst, is one of the catastrophic disasters in underground coalmine. Among them, approximate 80% of recorded destructive burst events were occurred in mining roadway. The bump panel is often formed by hard coal seam and hard main roof; however, the cause and course of the bump events are not understood yet. This study provides a fundamental theory for the causality and progress of a coal bump event occurred in longwall roadway. Considering hard roof condition commonly existed in bump panels, we think that the abutment pressure induced by suspended roof behind the working face is the trigger of a coal bump event occurred in the roadway. Once high abutment pressure is concentrated on the hard coal seam around the working face, the roof and the coal around the working face form a seesaw-like structure, which leads the roof in front of the working face moving upwards. The movement of roof uplifting in front of the working face is a well evidenced phenomenon in practice, namely, roof rebounding, which causes unloading of the normal stress on the roof-coal interface around the roadway. A rib coal block bump mechanical model has been developed to establish the critical equilibrium equation of the coal block. Result shows that, the force source of coal bump is the horizontal ground stress perpendicular to the rib surface; and the slippage of the coal block is caused by the unloading of the normal stress acting on the roof-coal interface. Based on the causality and consequence theory of coal bump developed in the paper, several new prediction and prevention measures have been developed, including roadway design and in-tunnel reinforcing methods. The commonly used prevention measures in present have also been discussed. This paper presents a comprehensive explanation of coal bumps occurred in longwall roadways, from abutment pressure at working face forming seesaw structure to roof rebounding leading slippage of the rib coal mass into roadway, which provides a fundamental theory for coal bump causality mechanism and prediction and prevention technology.

There are a number of mineral processing operations which produce at some point a stream of hot particulates. At today's energy prices it becomes important to recover the energy held in the hot particulates. Sometimes it is convenient to use gas, e.g. in air pre- heating, and this will be appropriate in some circumstances. There are cases where it would be very useful if energy in the hot processed particles could be exchanged to the cold feed solids. This can be achieved within appropriate limitations by countercurrent heat exchangers comprised of parallel channels which contain, alternately, fluidized solids of 'hot' and 'cold' streams respectively. A pilot- plant has been built. Some calculations relating to industrial application will be Presented.

The objective of this project was to collect information applicable to the design of ground support systems in deep mines to include in-situ rock deformations, deformation-modulus, stresses, and geology and laboratory physical properties. All data collected was to be integrated and evaluated using a finite-elements computer code. In addition, considerable professional "cross pollenization" was anticipated from the association of University and SMRC personnel. Scope of Investigation Before a ground supporting system can be evaluated, the loading conditions existing in the region of investigation, strength, deformation characteristics, as well as other engineering properties of the rock structure immediately surrounding the openings, together with the pertinent geological information, must be obtained and analyzed. It was for this reason the following items were included in this research project: (1) The selection of a suitable area for the investigation. (2) The mapping of the important geological features of the area of investigation. (3) The measurement of in-situ deformation of rock masses immediately surrounding an underground opening of the area of investigation. (4) The determination of ground stresses. Ground source heat pumps are used to heat or cool building and heat water supply. Such heat pumps use the earth as a heat source or sink to efficiently provide or store thermal energy. For example, a ground source heat pump typically requires less then a third of the electric or fossil fuel energy of a conventional heater. Ground source heat pumps could therefore help reduce the energy consumption of active mines where low-grade geothermal resources are abundant. In most heat pumps, water or a water-antifreeze mixture having a temperature ranging from -6.5 to 43.5 °C is circulated through a heat exchanger at a rate of 0.000033 to 0.000067 m3/s (2 to 4 L/min) for each kilowatt of heating/cooling capacity. The groundwater that is continuously pumped to drain mines could be used to operate heat pumps. Water feeding a heat pump can alternatively circulate in a close loop network of pipes buried underground or installed in a surface water body. Retention water ponds, tailings and waste dumps commonly found at active mine sites could provide excellent environments to install the close loop system. Further research will help take advantage of the unexploited geothermal resources associated with actives mines.

ADOLPH GREINER, Seraing, Belgium :-I have nothing special to add to Professor Hubert's paper except to say that there are some little things that it would be well to have cor-rected when the paper comes to be published. In dealing with the thermal efficiency of the engine, you will find that the 29.84 per cent was a very high one. Professor Hubert has forgotten those engines built under the Cockerill type, but he has referred to them in Appendix II. At our works at Cockerill we have built 63 engines, giving 63,000 h.p., and the other companies who have received licenses have built 113 engines, making 103,000 h.p., and aggregating 176 engines and 166,000 h.p. Eight years ago I had the pleasure of giving to the Institute the results obtained up to that time. Since then a good many engines have been constructed. In 1898 I thought a blast-furnace producing 100 tons of pig iron would allow 3,000 h.p. Professor Witz and Professor Hubert show that with the same production of pig the new engines take 3,800 h.p. out of the gas. At present at Cockerill we make 700 to 800 tons of pig iron per day, and we hope to have 26,000 h.p; in a few years. At present we have only half of that in gas-engines, but we hope to have in five or six years all the gas out of these furnaces to the number of 25,000 or 26,000 h.p. MR. Bushveld Belco is commissioning a plant for production of electrolyte used in vanadium redox flow batteries. Owing to the source material, the electrolyte is contaminated with Fe, at concentrations up to 140 mg/L, which negatively affects battery performance. This study examined the use of ion exchange to reduce the Fe concentration to the target value of < 100 mg/L from a feed solution containing 100 g/L V in 4 M H2SO4. Four resins with possible application were identified: Puromet MTS9570, Puromet MTX7010, Puromet MTS9500, and Puromet MTC1600H. Puromet MTS9570 outperformed the other three resins in all batch experiments with respect to loading capacity and selectivity over V, and was evaluated for Fe removal in fixed-bed column loading tests. Based on these data, preliminary sizing and design of a full-scale column was undertaken. Owing to the difficulty of eluting this resin, a philosophy of discarding the resin on loading to full capacity was considered. These data revealed that, despite the high selectivity of this resin for Fe over V, it would be too expensive and impractical to use this resin for full-scale operation under such conditions. It is recommended to remove iron earlier in the flowsheet prior to generation of the 4 M H2SO4 electrolyte.

Most blast fragmentation models assume the rock mass properties, explosive properties and blast design variables to be constants and uniformly distributed within a blast. However, in reality all these input variables vary within a blast resulting in variation in the resulting fragmentation size distribution. A stochastic modelling approach is introduced in this paper to quantify this variation. This technique takes the input variables as statistical distributions rather than constants and through several thousand iterations, generates a statistical representation of the expected fragmentation resulting from a production blast. A case study of three production blasts from a large open pit mine are presented and the modelled fragmentation æenvelopeÆ shows good agreement with the fragmentation æenvelopeÆ estimated from Split image analysis. The various blast-related parameters influence different parts of the fragmentation distribution, eg rock strength and explosive velocity of detonation have most impact on the fines. The technique is used to identify the parameters that have the greatest influence on various size fractions. Such an analysis will be useful to direct resources to efficiently minimise the variation.

O emprego de fontes renováveis de carbono encontra nos processos de coqueificação uma forma de reuso de partículas carbonosas finas ou fora das especificações necessárias para utilização em outros processos metalúrgicos, além de reduzir as emissões de carbono. O presente trabalho avalia os principais efeitos da incorporação de um carvão vegetal de eucalipto a uma mistura de carvões para a produção de coques em forno piloto. Para isso, o carvão vegetal foi adicionado em teores de 3%, 5% e 10%, e em duas frações granulométricas, a uma mistura de carvões. A qualidade dos coques gerados foi avaliada e discutida ao longo do trabalho por ensaios de caracterização do coque como, análise imediata, teor de enxofre, reatividade e resistência pós-reação (CRI/CSR), resistência mecânica a frio (DI 150/15) e textura óptica. Foi observado que a adição de 3% de carvão vegetal, na fração mais grosseira, à mistura de carvões resultou no coque de melhor qualidade.

Determination of the sampling constant and liberation diameter are of importance when applying the Fundamental Sampling Error (FSE) equation to optimise sampling protocols. The method for the direct determination of the sampling constant is based on the æGy 50-pieceÆ experiment and variants thereof, which is generally known as the heterogeneity test. In the coarse gold environment, the heterogeneity test is prone to poor repeatability and bias due to the very heterogeneity that it aims to quantify. A key issue is the large sample mass that can be required in the coarse gold environment, which may reach 1 t or more. The heterogeneity test often provides an evaluation of the background gold grade heterogeneity, but understates that of the high-grade coarse-gold component. This is because the total mass of fragments is usually too small to represent the mineralisation. Despite this relatively well-known problem, heterogeneity tests are often undertaken on deposits where the presence of coarse gold is ignored, not fully realised or vastly understated. Sampling types and protocol designs are frequently based on poor quality data that do not match the characteristics of the orebody. For this style of mineralisation, an empirical approach to define ore characteristics is recommended.CITATION:Dominy, S C and Minnitt, R C A, 2012. "The bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloids are compounds which can be isolated from plants and which exhibit a broad range of pharmacological activities. Perhaps the best known alkaloid of this group is tetrandrine (TT), a compound isolated from the root of a traditional Chinese medicinal herb, Stephania tetrandra. It has been tested for its effects on the cardiovascular system, tumors, and the lungs. For example, tetrandrine has been shown to act as a calcium entry blocker in cardiac sarcolemmal vesicles (King et a/., 1988) and has been used in China as a treatment for angina and hypertension. Its possible effects as a tumor-inhibitory substance have also been investigated (Kupchan and Atland, 1973). In addition, there are several lines of evidence to suggest that it is a possible therapeutic agent for the treatment of silicosis. Yu et a/. (1983) have shown that TT inhibits the development of experimental silicosis in rats when it is administered orally after intratracheal instillation of quartz. Other studies have shown that the alkaloid inhibits the synthesis of collagen by fibroblasts and the formation of silicotic nodules in rats exposed to silica (Huang et al., 1981; Liu et al., 1983). In fact, tetrandrine has been used clinically in China as an antifibrotic agent and has been shown to improve both the appearance of chest radiographs and the measurements of diffusing capacity in patients with silicosis (Li et al., 1981).Since tetrandrine may have a potential use as a therapeutic agent for fibrotic lung diseases, its effects on various pulmonary cells and tissues should be studied. Alveolar type II cells are located in the alveolar regions of the lungs and are important because they are responsible for the synthesis and secretion of pulmonary surfactant (Dobbs et al., 1982; King, 1984), regeneration of the alveolar epithelium after lung injury (Kauffman et al., 1974), and metabolism of foreign compounds (Bend et al., 1985). Furthermore, in silicosis, for which TT has been suggested as a treatment, there are increased amounts of pulmonary surfactant produced (Dethloff et al., 1986a,b) as a result of increased rates of surfactant synthesis by type II cells (Dethloff et a/., 1989; Miller et al., 1988). Because type II cells play a critical role in maintaining normal lung function and because type II cells are affected in silicosis, for which 'TT has been used as a treatment, we studied the effects of tetrandrine on energy metabolism in these cells in vitro. Energy metabolism was chosen because it is a basic cellular function which is neces-sary for other cellular processes to occur. Since type II cells depend on mitochondrial metabolism for energy production (Fisher et al., 1980), we examined the effects of tetrandrine on cellular and mitochondrial ATP production and oxygen consumption. Additional experiments were performed in an effort to determine if intracellular calcium levels may be involved in the TT-induced effects. A preliminary report of those results has appeared previously (Ma et al., 1991)."

Os aços avançados de alta resistência (Advanced High Strength Steels - AHSS) vêm sendo uma solução atrativa na construção de estruturas automotivas mais leves e seguras, pois combinam alta resistência e boa conformabilidade. Neste trabalho, foram realizadas simulações numéricas e experimentos em escala industrial, com aços fornecidos pela Usiminas, da estampagem de uma travessa dianteira de suspensão automotiva. O objetivo desses experimentos foi avaliar a estampabilidade deste componente, que atualmente é fabricado com o aço de alta resistência baixa liga (HSLA340, 2,0 mm), quando substituído pelos aços Dual Phase (DP600, 1,6 e 1,8 mm) e Transformation Induced Plasticity (TRIP700, 1,6 mm). As simulações numéricas reproduziram o padrão de deformação destes materiais durante os processos de conformação e o perfil geométrico do componente. A travessa de suspensão automotiva foi estampada com sucesso com os AHSS propostos.

AN IMPORTANT innovation in Alabama in the semi-longwall type of coal mining as applied to low-dipping thin seams has been introduced by the Galloway Coal Co., mining the Mary Lee high-ash seam which averages only 26 in. thick. The property is their Mill Creek mine, near Carbon Hill, Ala., in the Warrior coal field. The results, although not final, indicate that roof conditions can be successfully handled by this method without loss of walls, with a rate of recovery much above that possible with the room-and-pillar method, and at the low production cost necessary for this grade of coal. Double cross-headings are turned off a main haulageway on 60-ft. centers and driven 40 ft. wide with thin chain pillars between. These double entries are turned at 525-ft. intervals, leaving a solid block of coal 440 ft. across; that is, from the outside of one pair of headings to the inside of the next pair is 440 ft. The bottom, which consists of hard fireclay, is taken in these entries 8 ft. wide and 4 ft. deep for head room.

Aqueous Biphasic Systems (ABS) form upon the admixture of certain water-soluble polymers or polymers and salts above critical concentrations, and thus represent liquid/liquid extraction systems whose nature is entirely aqueous. We are currently investigating the utility of ABS (and its solid phase analogs) as "green" alternatives to the use of volatile organic diluents in separations of metal ions. Chaotropic (water-destructuring) metal ions with small negative AGhyd (e.g., Tc04) tend to partition quantitatively to the PEG-rich phase of an ABS, but even hydrated metal cations can be partitioned to the PEG-rich phase if a suitable extractant (e.g., halide, dye, crown ether, etc.) is used to produce a more chaotropic ion-complex.

Lenders do not normally participate in any project upside. The economics of lending dictate that banks can only accommodate a low probability of loan default and consequently banks&apos; principal focus in mineral ""valuation"" is ensuring an acceptably comfortable probability of debt repayment. A simple conceptual explanation of lenders&apos; risk / return position is outlined.

During recent years the designing of mine cars has become a very highly specialized art. Mechanical methods of mining, constantly increasing speeds of transportation and thin seams of coal have made it absolutely essential to develop low cars of maximum capacity. The producer of coal from thick seams, because of mechanical mining, which he is already employing or con- templating adopting, is now as much interested in low cars of high capacity, as is the thin seam operator. The mine car builder has been alert to this trend and is equipped with a specially trained corps of engineers and salesmen, who receive the necessary information from the producer and develop therefrom a suitable car design to fulfill the conditions.
