In Indiana, 349 wells were drilled for oil and gas in the year 1942. Of this number, 125 oil wells and 21 gas wells were successfully completed and 203 were dry holes. Drilling activity declined 37 per cent as compared with that of the year 1941. This reduction was brought about largely by Federal Conservation Order M-68, restricting drilling to one well on 40 acres, in order to save steel. This Order was later supplemented to permit closer spacing of wells drilled to sandstone formations in southwestern Indiana. Most of the drilling in 1942 was in the southwestern part of the state. Posey County ranked first, with 94 completions and 44 producers; Gibson County, second, with 77 completions and 38 producing oil wells and 2 gas wells. There were 58 drilling operations in the state at the end of the year. During 1942 a total of 589,734 ft. of hole was drilled, of which 231,702 ft. was wildcat footage. The total initial production of the oil wells completed was 9974 bbl. and of the gas wells, 11,148,000 cu. ft. (Table 2). Of the 349 wells completed, 122 were wildcat wells (Table 3); 26 were completed as oil wells; 17 were extensions to proven fields and 9 discovered new pools. Posey County was foremost in wildcat drilling, with 37 wells completed (Table 6). Thirty-five per cent of the wells drilled in 1942 were wildcat, as compared with 25.5 per cent in 1941. It is anticipated that the percentage of wildcat wells drilled in 1943 will be greater, although the total number ol ,wells drilled in the state will probably be less. The new discoveries in Indiana in I942 were, for the most part, one-well pools in the southwestern part—in Posey, Gibson and Spencer Counties (Table 4). Most of the development in pools took place in the . Hazelton and Kirksville pools in Gibson County, Mr. Vernon pool in Posey County and the Vernon Heights pool in Vander-burgh County. Deeper production was obtained from the Osage limestone in the Hazelton pool at a depth of 2402 ft., 650 ft. below the productive McClosky limestone. The well had an initial production of 140 barrels. Extensions to 17 pools in the southwestern part of the state were successfully completed (Table 5). An interesting development during 1942 was new production from the Devonian limestone in the Dodds Bridge pool, Sullivan County. The Ohio Oil Co. deepened one of its wells, which had been producing from a shallow sand, to the,Devonian, and it was completed for an initial production of 77 bbl. Five other Devonian producing wells were completed in that area. Crude-oil production in Indiana in 1942 was 6,609,000 bbl. (Table I). The Griffin field, Gibson and Posey Counties, which produced approximately 3,550,000 bbl., accounted for more than half of the state's production. The 8-millisecond rule has been in use for many years as a basic technique to help minimize vibration levels from surface blasting operations. The rule was based on work carried out in the 1960’s by the USBM by recording the vibration levels from a series of test blasts in a quarry over a range of distances. This work included the firing of a series of single hole blasts and a number of single row production blasts using a variety of inter-hole delay times. The delay times employed were limited by the technology available at that time to instantaneous, 9, 17 and 34 milliseconds. There have been several papers in recent years suggesting that the use of the 8-millisecond rule is no longer required, when using electronic detonators, due to their enhanced accuracy and greater initiation pattern design flexibility. This paper examines this proposition by revisiting the original work and employing the linear superposition technique to reprocess some of the original recordings. Similar techniques are then applied to a large database of single hole vibration recordings for a range of rock types, distances, and number of decks, with calculated reinforcements compared to the minimum separations in typical patterns. The results suggest that there is some validity to the 8-millisecond rule when applied to electronic detonators but not in the way it is traditionally applied. Simple guidance is suggested for those designing blasts with electronic detonators to minimize vibration levels even if the benefits of linear superposition trials are not available.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has patented and transferred to industry an abrasive-enhanced water-jet rock drill. This drill incorporates three novel components: a collimator, jet deflectors for cutting clearance, and an unpressurized swivel, which rotates at 1,000 rpm while passing 20 gpm of an abrasive slurry flowing at 1,000 ft/s. Drilling occurs through the action of a 10,000-psi, 2O-gpm water jet into which is entrained 72 lb/min of abrasives. The pumps, hoses, and fittings are those commonly used in the water-jet-cleaning industry. Only inexpensive, common sandblasting abrasives are used. This drill can cut through hard rocks with moderate-pressure jets; e.g., rocks with a compressive strength of 73,000 psi can be drilled with a 1O,OOO-psi abrasive jet. In addition to drilling holes, the drill can cut deep, narrow kerfs; collar a hole at any angle; drill through rubble; and chamber holes. The development of the abrasive jet drill is a significant advance in the state of the art of hard-rock drilling. The Government of the United States has licensed the abrasive jet drill patent to Weatherford Water Jetting Systems.

"In sintering, the flame front speed (bed permeability) and sinter qualities are greatly depended on the feed size, especially coke breeze and limestone particle size. It is well known that coke breeze provides sinter bed with heat to meet the demand of partial fusion and diffusion bonding while limestone reacts with iron ore to generate bonding phase in the sintering process. Accordingly, it is necessary to find the optimum combination of different particle size of coke breeze and limestone to yield sinter associated with better qualities. In this study, sinter was produced in the sinter pot with varying coke breeze and limestone particle size together in sintering of a coarse hematite iron ore. The sintering productivity was measured and all of the result sinters were examined by microstructure analysis and reduction degradation test (RDI test). For the sintering of a coarse hematite iron ore, it was found that the optimum mean particle size combination of coke breeze and limestone was 1. 71mm and 1.55mm in the sinter mix. On such a circumstance, sintering productivity was higher and the properties of sinter were better.IntroductionNowadays, as the main iron bearing burden material of modem blast furnaces, sinter has a great influence on the blast furnace operation. Sintering is a greatly complex process involving various chemical reactions to form kinds of mineral phases [1, 2]. In the sintering process, coke breeze is used for fuel and it generates heat to raise the green bed temperature. Limestone serves as flux and it reacts with iron ore to produce various mineral phases. On one hand, during the sintering process, the particle size of coke breeze can have an effect on temperature, atmosphere, the flame front speed and all of them act on the microstructure and mineral constitutions of sinter [3, 4]."

"INTRODUCTION The Mayfield manganese property is about 25 miles south of Van Horn, in Jeff Davis County, Tex. The ore deposit is developed by a large open-cut and a small stope.An 8-ton sample was received for testing; it was taker at random from material on the mine dumps and consisted of a mixture of manganese oxides, barite, and siliceous gangue minerals. The manganese occurred largely as hard, massive, crystalline psilomelane, with a small amount of pyrolusite. The gangue minerals consisted of intermixed iron-stained sand stone, quartzite, chalcedony, calcite, quartz, and barite. Chemical analysis showed 8.9 percent manganese, 3.3 percent iron, 38.4 percent silica, 6.6 percent calcium carbonate, 7.1 percent barium, 3.1 percent alumina, 0.09 percent phosphorus 0.01 tungstic oxide, and less than 0.05 percentAnalysis of selected clean pieces of manganese minerals, free of gangue, showed 48.1 percent manganese end 13.4 percent barium, of which only 0.2 percent was present as barium sulfate. This indicated a limit in concentration. Barium was also present in the gangue as a separate mineral, barite (BaSO4), which has approximately the same specific gravity as the manganese oxide."

Pyritic tailings from the Quirke mine waste management area in Elliot Lake, Ontario were subjected to long-term column leaching experiments in two PVC columns measuring 122 cm in height and 15.2 cm in diameter. At the end of the leaching experiments, the columns were taken apart and sampled at 5 cm intervals for quantitative mineralogical and geochemical characterisation. Each column is represented by a total of ten samples. Polished sections, prepared from the samples, were studied by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, electron microprobe and X-ray diffraction techniques. Mineral quantities were determined based on linear mixing models of whole rock and mineral compositions. Pyrite particle sizes were measured by image analysis interfaced to an electron microprobe. The tailings are coarse-grained (ie 96 per cent passing 75 ¦m) and composed of quartz, K-feldspar, muscovite and pyrite. Pyrite is homogenous and occurs as liberated particles displaying angular to subangular boundaries with strong dissolution features at the end of the leaching experiments. Based on up to 3518 particles measured in a sample, pyrite particle sizes range from 1.7 to 78.6 ¦m. Pyrite concentrations vary from 0.1 to 7.8 wt per cent, depending upon their location from the top of the columns. These correspond to pyrite losses of up to 99 per cent from their original level of 7.2 wt per cent in the upper half of the columns. Pyrite oxidation rates in terms of moles of pyrite oxidised per mole of pyrite per square metre per second were calculated from the effluent data and the measured pyrite particle sizes. The rates vary from 1.71+10-12 to 5.78+10-10 mole+m-2+s-1 within the 1.5 to 3.5 pH range for 10 ¦m particles. These results are comparable with the published oxidation rates at pH 2 where the dissolved oxygen is the only oxidant.

A soldagem por brasagem a vácuo promove a união de materiais dissimilares com alto valor agregado. Este trabalho visa estudar a interação química do nitreto de boro hexagonal (h-BN) na interface de ligação brasada do par Kovar®/h-BN. As variáveis de processo são determinantes para formação da junta brasada metalurgicamente estável. O trabalho estuda a molhabilidade do h-BN quando em contato com ligas de adição do sistema eutético Ag-Cu durante a solidificação. Foram conduzidos ensaios no h-BN a fim de caracterizar sua aplicação no sensor de posição do feixe de elétrons (BPM) do projeto do Sirius, e as propriedades que influenciam o seu processamento durante a brasagem, como coeficiente de expansão térmica e molhabilidade superficial. Os ensaios de brasagem com a liga Ag-Cu-4,5Ti, mostraram boa molhabilidade e espalhamento na superfície, favorecendo a formação da junta sem descontinuidades. As reações na interface são complexas no sentido de formação de novas fases e intermetálicos e, influenciadas pela seleção dos materiais, que possuem diferentes temperaturas de fusão e coeficientes de expansão térmica. Os resultados indicam que a seleção da liga com Ti, que é o elemento de ativação, promove a interação na superfície do h-BN com os demais materiais da junta.

The enhancement of shear flocculation of a galena suspension by ultrasound in the presence of sodium isopropyl xanthate and potassium ethyl xanthate was investigated by studying the effects of surfactant concentration on flocculation efficiency, contact angle, and zeta potential. Strong flocculation was obtained under alkaline conditions (pH > 9) and a high ultrasound power level (150 W). Although the ultrasonic treatment increased the negativity of the zeta potential of the galena particles, this did not decrease the flocculation efficiency, thereby showing that the hydrophobic interactions between the particle were stronger than the electrical double-layer repulsion resulting from xanthate adsorption. The findings indicate that the ultrasonic treatment promoted the adsorption of surfactants onto the mineral surfaces.

The New Zealand (NZ) Transport Agency’s Waterview Connection will complete Auckland’s Western Ring Route, a 47 km north–south motorway alternative to Stage Highway 1. The project is being delivered by the Well-Connected Alliance comprising the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA), Fletcher Construction, McConnell Dowell Constructors, Obayashi Corporation, Parsons Brinckerhoff NZ, Beca Infrastructure and Tonkin & Taylor.The project involves construction of 5 km of new motorway, nearly half of it underground connecting State Highway 20 (SH20) to State Highway 16 (SH16). The underground portion of the project incorporates twin 13.2 m inside diameter (ID) tunnels 2.4 km long, each carrying three traffic lanes, one for north-bound traffic and one for south-bound traffic. The tunnels are being driven by a 14.46 m outside diameter (OD) 2400 t, tunnel boring machine (TBM) shield that was assembled and launched at the southern portal. It will be turned and re-launched at the northern portal for the return drive to the southern portal where it will be disassembled. This paper presents two major temporary works elements contributing to the successful launch of the TBM: the TBM assembly crane platform and the TBM shove frame and associated components.Tunnel boring machine shield assembly – crane platformThe TBM shield was delivered to site in subassemblies ranging in weight from 100 to 380 t. It was initially proposed to use a 750 t crawler crane sitting above the tunnel portal headwall to assemble and disassemble the TBM. However, this did not have sufficient capacity to allow the TBM shield to advance clear of the tunnel before disassembly commences. To reduce the crane’s working radius a temporary steel crane platform was developed that is supported on the side walls of the tunnel approach trench. This has enabled a smaller, less expensive, 600 t crawler crane to be used and will allow the TBM shield to clear the tunnel before disassembly.Tunnel boring machine launch – temporary worksTo launch the TBM a purpose built steel frame was required for the TBM thrust rams to react against. The shove frame had to be able to transfer the thrust loads from the TBM shield to the ground below and thrust wall behind. A range of potential thrust loads and jacking patterns were examined to develop the design load cases for the shove frame. The shove frame was used to launch the TBM at the southern portal and to re-launch it at the northern portal. With the revolutionary progress in information and computer technologies, applying the latest information technologies in metallurgical complexes has become a serious challenge to both a major opportunity and a serious challenge to both management and technical teams. The emerging component and object technologies are changing the way everyone can beneficially use their computer and networks to add to their corporate bottom lines. Most mining and metallurgical plants use predictive maintenance policies based on statistical analysis and special techniques, like vibration analysis and oil and lube analysis for critical equipment. Process control strategies are installed in several metallurgical sites. All process equipment and control strategies require maintenance from local personnel at the mine. Integrated use of existing and emerging technologies is making it possible to implement an overall process effectiveness control index. This index is based on key indices such as losses due to plant availability, performance efficiency and rate of quality. The availability of real time and process history to identify the most critical part of the processing system from mechanical integrity is highlighted. An emerging plant integration paradigm is described to simplify the implementation of business enterprise resources management and distributed plant management systems.

Effective control of blast vibration and flyrock requires that significant factors be identified and quantified, that the blast be designed to ensure both blasting efficiency and compliance with applicable limits, and that the blast design be effectively implemented by field personnel. Significant factors contributing to ground vibration and airblast are: charge mass; distance and direction relative to the blast; drilling design: burden, spacing; stemming height and material type; hole diameter and depth; and initiation sequence and direction.In addition, airblast may be strongly influenced by shielding and meteorological conditions. Ground vibration is also influenced by the transmission characteristics of the ground and soil. Flyrock throw is determined by charge mass, burden, stemming height, blasthole diameter and depth. The contribution of each of the factors has been quantified and models developed to enable the environmental outcomes of blast design to be predicted. Environmental blast design is necessary to ensure compliance with regulatory limits and the implementation of æsafeÆ exclusion zones for flyrock clearance. This paper discusses the models used for environmental blast design and demonstrates the often significant effects that lapse during implementation of the design can have on predicted outcomes. In practice, drillers and shotfirers are sometimes confronted with situations that require modifications to the blast design to cope with the real site situation. Methods are presented that may be used by drillers and shotfirers to evaluate the effect of these modifications, the tolerances that must be reached during their work practice and checking procedures, and the consequences of their actions.

The hydrodesulfurization characteristics of a residual fuel prepared from Wilmington, Calif., crude oil were determined at temperatures from 600° to 900° F, pressures of 200 to 800 pSig, and space velocities from 0.2 to 2.0 Vo/Vc/hr, using cobalt molybdate type catalysts. A prediction equation, developed from the experimental data, satisfactorily predicts the fraction of total sulfur that can be removed under any combination of operating conditions within the ranges investigated. Yields and properties of the low sulfur product are correlated with the fraction of total sulfur removed. Kinetic calculations show that the apparent reaction order and activation energy change with space velocity and temperature.

"The formation, distribution and survival of pure Al nuclei under surface pulsed magneto oscillation (SPMO) treatment were investigated with thecombination of experiments and numerical simulation. The results indicated that the nuclei originated from the whole top surface of melt owing to the oscillation of top surface induced by SPMO. The temperature field significantly affected the survival of the nuclei The electromagnetic force and flow field of the melt with SPMO treatment were simulated by finite element software ANSYS. The electromagnetic force mainly distributed below the top surface near the mould wall. The electromagnetic farce not only made the melt oscillate but also increased the convection of meh below the top surface vigorously. The oscillation near the top surface of the melt promoted the nucleation largely, and the convection increased the uniform of the temperature distribution in the whole meh which favored the survival of nucleiIntroductionAs we all know, fine equiaxed grains are beneficial fur the improvement of the mechanical property, process ability and the uniformity of metallic materials [1-2]. With the researches of recent decades, people discovered that the electromagnetic field is an efficient method to refine the solidified structure of metals [3-7]. Pulsed magnetic field technology obtains more and more attentions in recent years due to its smaller power consumption, bigger instantaneous magnetic field intensity, non-contacting with the meh and simple convenient equipment manufacturing [8-9]. However, the melts would splash fiercely when pulsed magnetic field is applied with a slightly higher power. Thus, based on the understanding of the solidification refinement mechanism of electric current pulse (ECP) [10], Gong et al [11] developed a novel technology called pulse magneto-oscillation (PMO) to refine the solidification structure. The technology can be easily applied in the solidification structure refinement of continuous casting slab. But fur aluminum continuous casting, the sump is very shallow, which greatly limits the application of pulse magneto-oscillation technology."

"Waste dump development at the Fording River Operation s in British Columbia began in 1971. In 1981, several unique as well as unplanned situations provided an opportunity to study water flows through waste dumps.The key to the drainage is naturally segregated rock sizes .created by end dumping from the crest of a pile. The largest size material accumulates at the toe. Flow rates along the base of the studied dumps varied from 2,800 to 13,500 m3/day or 0.032 to 0. 156 m3/s (1.2-5.5 cfs}. Sediment concentrations in the water ranged from 1 to 1,800 mg/I.This paper describes water flows through dumps of varied lithology and maturity. The results suggest that neither long-term water flow nor contained sediments in small streams are jeopardized when crossed by end-dumped fills.IntroductionThe Fording River Operations are located in southeastern British Columbia approximately 115 km north of the United State s and 10 km west of Alberta, within the medial range of the Rocky Mountains. All production is carried out at elevations ranging between 1,600 and 2,200 m above sea level.The property is within a continental climatic zone, with temperature extremes of - 40°C in January to +35°C in July. The average annual precipitation of 335 mm of rainfall and 390 cm of snowfall feeds the numerous seasonal, small drainage courses along the Fording River valley.Since start-up in 1971, 149 million bank cubic met res of waste from truck-shovel and dragline mining have been placed in numerous dumps or ""spoils"". The dumps were developed to the point that several unique situations could be studied. During the peak run-off period of May-June 1981, water flow studies were performed on dumps of varied lithology and maturity. This paper describes the results of the study."

Exploration activity in metallic minerals continued to decline in Montana in 1992 as companies either reduced budgets or left the state. The number of active projects dropped another 50% from 1991. Expenditures were 3% to 6% of 1989's 28.6 million. Many of the major mining companies closed offices in Montana. Although depressed commodity prices have hurried the exodus, continuous changes in environmental regulations, as well as the Mining Law of 1872, without regard to economic effect have had the most serious impact. Many companies indicate that Third World countries present a more stable business environment than the United States. Grassroots projects are nearly non-existent, while late-stage programs continue cautiously. Exploration activity continued at the following projects: Garnet, Pegasus Gold; Southern Cross, Asarco; Elkhorn, Goldfields; 7-Up-Pete, Phelps Dodge and Canyon Resources; Miller Mountain, Pegasus Gold; Sheep Creek, Cominco American Resources; Checkerboard, Kennecott and BHP Utah International; Emigrant Creek, Pegasus Gold; and Crevise, American Copper and Nickel. All mineral activity, whether on private, state or federal land, is regulated by the Montana Department of State Lands under three classes of permits - Small Miner Exclusion Statements (SMES), Exploration Licenses and Operating Permits. A total of 230 Exploration Licenses are active in the state with 26 of those being new. However, there are only 433 projects current in Montana, with many of those in the reclaiming stage. The majority of exploration projects consist of individuals expending time rather than money on properties. The number of mines functioning under operating plans declined by one when W.R. Grace closed its Zonolite operation.

A systematic study was made by the Bureau of Mines on the effect of so me hypothesized accelerators for the process of wustite reduction in carbon monoxide. When small concentrations of promoter materials in the order of 0.69 at. pct were added to the reducible charge, the rate of reduction to iron was increased. Promotion phenomenon prediction was made in light of a suyface reduction mechanism with the aid of Vol'kenshtein's effect regarding the propagation of crystal lattice disturbances by small amounts of relatively larger interstitial ions. The acceleration produced by a typical promotor, such as potassiunl, increases with protnoter concentration up to a maximum, beyond which the reduction rate decreases. Concentration for maximum promotion depends on the nature and physicochemical properties of the promoter. The extent of reduction rate enhancement is found to be directly proportional to the atomic volume and electronic charge of the additive. DESPITE the enormous volume of literature on iron oxide reduction, very little is reported concerning additive or impurity effects on this important metallurgical process. The beneficial effect bf calcium compound additions on the reducibility of iron oxide sinters has been reported by Tigerschiold,1 vor dem Esche,2 and Edstrom. Doi and Kasai~ found that the addition of lime or limestone to iron ores helps to break up any unreducible compounds, such as fayalite or ilmen-ite. and thus free the combined iron for reduction. Schenck et al. 5 suggested that the increased reduction rate obtained when adding lime could be accounted for by the instability of wustite in the presence of lime. Acid-base slagging reactions resulted in wustite disproportionation according to The dicalcium ferrite formed will yield iron and calcium oxide during reduction. Regenerated calcium oxide dissociates more wustite. This mechanism has been used by Seths and white7 to explain their experimental results. Recently, Strangway and ROSS' attributed the calcium carbonate acceleration of iron oxide agglomerate reduction to increased porosity, both initial as well as that developed during reduction. Aside from calcium carbonate, or oxide, no other promoter was noted in the literature, except for a brief mention by Barrett and woodg on the effect of sodium carbonate and aluminate as activators for the hydrogen reduction of magnetite at 600°C. The present investigation systematically studied a host of other promoters, including calcium and sodium, in an attempt to elucidate the mechanism by which promotion takes place and to fit the results into a simple chemical model. To attain this goal, the effect of promoter physical properties, such as atomic volume, electronic charge, and concentration are related to wustite reduction kinetics in this paper. Wustite reduction to iron, rather than the overall hematite reduction, was chosen since this reaction is known to be the slowest, and hence the rate-deter mining step for the overall iron oxide reduction process. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Raw Materials and Their Preparation. The pure or impregnated wustite pellets were prepared from minus 400-mesh chemically pure hematite powders. A known weight of hematite was thoroughly and uniformly mixed with a calculated weight of the additive. The mixed paste containing 35 wt pct water was gradually heated from 400" to 1200° C and fired at 1200°C for approximately 4 hr in an air atmosphere. After cooling, the sinter was pulverized to minus 100 mesh and pelletized into minus 4- plus 5-mesh spheres. Pellets were fired, similarly to the paste mix, air-cooled, sized, and stored. An appropriate weight of the charge (20 g) was placed in a zirconia reduction tube maintaining a uniform oxide bed height of 1 cm and a cross section of 7.1 sq cm for all of the test runs. The samples were supported in the vertical reaction tube by a bed of fragmented insulating firebrick plus 3- to 6-mesh alumina beads. The hematite was then transformed to wustite by reduction with a 30 pct CO2-70 pct CO gas mixture at 1000°C in a globar furnace. Complete conversion to wustite was ascertained by a continuous infrared gas analyzer recording the CO-CO2 content of the effluent gas until no carbon monoxide was absorbed from the inlet gas, and inlet-outlet gas analysis remained constant for 30 min. The wustite sample was then reduced with 100 pct CO at 100WC. From the recorded data, an initial rate of reduction was determined by the initial slope of the graph percent reduction vs time. In order to estimate the accuracy of the data, five separate determinations of the reduction curve of pure wustite, under otherwise identical conditions, were performed. The maximum deviation from the average reduction at 14 min amounted to 2 2 pct reduction. This deviation corresponds to 3.8 pct variation based on the percent reduction of the sample. Aiiy impurity effect below the limits of this maximum deviation was considered a spurious result. If the effect exceeded + 4 pct, then it was considered as a positive one. Considerable care was exercised in determining the initial rate from the slope of the initial segments of the curve. Each reduction curve was examined separately on large graph paper and the best tangent to the curve at zero time was drawn. The slope of this tangent was taken as a measure of the initial fractional reduction per minute. Although the time required to reach 50 pct reduction may be of special practical significance, initial rate measurements are invaluable in fundamental studies. The subject of capital and the Canadian mining industry is so broad as to be impossible of comprehensive treatment in brief form. The purpose of the present paper therefore will be only to outline in a meagre and somewhat sketchy way the nature and extent of the mineral industry in Canada and to point out those features which are likely to be of general public interest. Canada's mineral industry has a long and creditable production record. The? value of the output per capita rose from $2.23 in 1886 to a maximum of $26.40 in 1920 and the value of the products from ten million dollars in the former year to almost two hundred and twenty-eight million dollars in 1920. Compared with other primary industries and on the basis of the value of production, mining held third place in Canada in 1920, the premier position going to agriculture and the value of forestry production placing that industry second in the list. In the mineral industry, between six and seven thousand properties are operated annually giving employment to up- wards of sixty thousand employees to whom about seventy-five million dollars is paid in salaries and wages. During 1923, seventeen mineral products reached a production value of one million dollars or over in Canada and in order of the values assigned these were: coal, gold, nickel, cement, cop-per, silver, clay products, lead, asbestos, natural gas, stone, zinc, lime, cobalt, sand and gravel, gypsum and salt.
