"The effect of composition and process variables on the properties of Marmet and modified Ni-Hard slugs will be discussed. The effect of shape on the over-all performance of grinding media and its relationship to the end product has been investigated and these results will be reviewed. The cost effectiveness of slugs versus balls has been well documented under various operating conditions and this will be presented in detail. IntroductionThe selection of grinding media is based on the cost-to-wear ratio combined with the consideration that it must stand repeated impacts without breaking. The specific consumption of grinding balls and slugs depend s primarily on their microstructure, which, in turn, is controlled by chemical composition and by the processing condition s to which they are subjected during manufacture.The first part of the paper deals with the optimization of alloy content to produce cast iron slugs with microstructures consisting essentially of marten site and carbide and with hardnesses of 650 B.H.N. and higher. The second part deals with the use of cast iron slugs to replace forged steel balls in milling operations. Tests indicate that the shape of the media has little if any effect on results and that the hardness and microstructure of grinding media will determine its relative performance. Where price is equal under similar milling conditions, the cost effectiveness of cast iron slugs is superior to that of forged steel balls.In order to understand the role of alloying elements in cast irons, it is judicious to consider the microstructural changes which occur during solidification and subsequent cooling, particularly from above the eutectoid temperature. Solidification starts with the formation and growth of dendrites of austenite. As temperature decreases, an eutectic nucleates and grows between the primary austenite dendrites. Immediately after solidification, the structure consists of proeutectic austenite and of the eutectic of primary carbides and austenite. On cooling to room temperature, austenite can be retained or transformed to pearlite, bainite, martensite or mixtures thereof. It is necessary to prevent decomposition of austenite into pearlite by adjusting the alloy content. For best abrasion resistance, the microstructure at room temperature should consist essentially of martensite and carbide. These types of irons are known as ""martensitic irons "". Depending on the carbon content of the austenite and cooling rate, "" as-cast"" martensitic irons will contain different proportions of martensite and retained austenite. The more carbon in solution in the austenite, the lower is the temperature at which the martensitic transfoemation takes place. By the time room temperature is reached ., the transformation is seldom complete, and the end product is generally a mixture of martensite and retained austenite."

"This paper presents an analysis of respiraple dust generation due to the action of a continuous miner. Underground coal cutting by a drum-type continuous miner was simulated in the laboratory using a specially designed unique automated rotary coal cutting simulator (ARCCS). An analysis of -400 mesh particles was done on gravity collected material. Samples of entrained dust were collected through the use of cascade impactors. Both samples were analyzed for size distribution and particle shape. Using the simulated coal cutter permitted variation of operating and in-situ parameters to provide information on the effects on generation of -400 mesh particles. In these tests coal blocks with an approximate dimension of 18 in. x 15 in. x 6 in. (45.7 cm x 38.1 cm x 15.2 cm) were first subjected to confining pressures, equivalent to in-situ conditions. Such blocks were then cut by the cutting head of the ARCCS, thus simulating the action of the continuous miner in underground coal mining. During the tests under a particular set of in-situ and operating parameters a number of other parameters such as 1) penetration of bit into coal, 2) penetration resistance (thrust and cutting pressures), 3) rotating velocity of cutting head, and 4) acoustic emission activity in the coal block were monitored. After each cutting cycle the fractured surfaces were photo¬graphed and a velocity survey was conducted by using a sonic technique. At the end of each experiment the cutting paths of the bits in coal were photographed using an optical microscope with an attached camera.IntroductionThe continuous-mining machines introduced in the 1950's now account for more than half the production of coal from underground mines. Unfortunately, these continuous miners, designed for increased productivity, have also increased the concentration of respirable dust in mines. As a result, the Federal Coal sine Health and Safety Act of 1969 was enacted to enforce on the coal operators that the airborne respirable dust not exceed 2 mg/m3, and was intended to reduce the incidence of coal workers pneumo-coniosis. This plus the other aspects of the legislation and the subsequent monitoring and enforcement by MSHA made it very imperative that the coal operators provide a relatively healthier and safer working environment for the coal miners. Since 1970, the Federal government has paid over 11.7 billion dollars to more than 470,000 miners with coal workers pneumoconiosis and their survivors (Newmeyer, 1981). These regulations, coupled with the assessment of the continuing burden on miners, the mining industry and taxpayers appear to have provided an impetus for the mining community towards comprehending the different parameters that influence dust generation and entrainment."

If continuous mining systems are to be successfully applied in metalliferous mines then reliable models will be needed to predict rock cutting machine advance and tool wear rates for effective machine selection before mining commences. Many of the predictive models developed to assess cuttability in situ are over-simplistic. As a result they tend to be both site and/or machine specific. Nevertheless very detailed models have been developed for full face machines which are capable of accurate cuttability predictions in a variety of rock mass conditions and for a variety of machine and tool configurations. However, models to predict productivity and tool consumption for partial face machines are not as well advanced. There is a need to develop reliable models for partial face machines such as Roadheaders, the Robbins Mobile Miner and the HDRK-Wirth CMM, as these types of machine are likely to predominate in a mining environment. The paper outlines the current state-of-the-art for predicting cutting machine performance and the work being carried out within the Centre for Mining Technology and Equipment (CMTE), in collaboration with the Australian mining industry, to advance our capability in this area.

"In the production of high quality steel, the understanding of the interactions between liquid steel and refractories and of their effect on steel purity and cleanness are becoming more and more important.An experimental study has been per-formed in order to estimate the importance of the reaction between a MgO-based tundish refractory and an Al-killed steel. The results show a pollution of the liquid steel:•the silicon content of the liquid steel increases due to the reduction of the silica of the refractory by the aluminum contained in the steel; and•a reoxidation of the steel occurs and the formation of an oxide layer on the refracto-ry, mainly composed of spinel crystals and of Ca-aluminates is observed.The transfer mechanisms of the various elements are analyzed."

In spite of advances in cutting tool technology, the understanding of the basic wear behavior and failure mechanisms needs further study. Tool wear is the main factor contributing to geometrical error and thermal damage in machined components. Manifested as a reduction in tool life, it also affects the workpiece surface finish, increases cutting forces and induces residual stresses. Furthermore, the emergence of high and ultra-high speed machining processes necessitates the investigation of tool wear under these severe working conditions. Tungsten carbide-cobalt composite material has been used traditionally as wear resistant materials for many years. One main application of this material is in cutting tools. WC-Co tools consist of hard WC particles imbedded in a tough Co matrix, which functions as a binder phase. More recently, Cubic boron nitride (CBN) tool material have attracted special attention due to its high hardness and excellent wear resistance. Boron nitride in its cubic form is known to be the hardest material next only to diamond. In this paper microstructural and tribological properties of commercial grade WC-Co and CBN cutting tool materials are investigated under high speed cutting conditions. The CBN cutting tools were found to be superior to tungsten carbide (WC) tools. Four-fold increase in productivity and significant reduction in chipping and cratering was achieved for CBN as compared to WC. Wear mechanisms are proposed and are related to the observed wear characteristics in the cutting zone.

The role of sodium silicate in the anionic flotation of a Florida phosphate ore was investigated using laboratory continuous flotation tests, frothability tests and SEM observations. In the absence of sodium silicate, Ca++ promoted the unwanted activation of quartz by forming calcium bearing precipitates. The addition of sodium silicate enhanced the flotation efficiency through: (1) the removal of impurity minerals and calcium-bearing. precipitates from quartz surfaces by dispersion, (2) drier and more persistent froths stabilized by oily droplets containing calcium silicate precipitates, and (3) higher specific flotation rates of phosphate relative to quartz, leading to faster flotation rates and increased selectivity of separation.

Productive and beneficial use of reclaimed surface-mined land is a concern of industry, government, and the general public. A process has been developed that will aid mine planners and public planners in the evaluation of postmining land use potential. This process involves the application of site planning principles to surface-mined land in a way that ensures productive end use of reclaimed land. The process consists of 10 basic components and is iterative in nature. Termination of the process depends on the amount of data collected and the evaluation requirements of each mining site. The analysis centers around the economic, environmental, and social impacts of the alternative land use plans.

Pumped co-disposal of coal processing waste was promoted in the 1990-2000s as a low-cost highperformance alternative to tailings dams. In particular it would avoid high up-front capital for rejects trucks and dam embankments, and would produce a combined waste deposit with better geotechnical properties than either coarse rejects or tailings. Overall, the promise was not delivered; in particular, upon discharge the waste segregated by size, and operators responded by moving the coarser waste to contain the finer waste. In consequence, not only did design analysis lag behind construction, but some of the initial expectations persisted with the result that analyses did not fully represent what was occurring on the ground. After more than twenty years inspecting, designing and tending Co-Disposal Areas (CDAs), it is apparent that they are essentially upstream constructed tailings dams with some more favourable aspects but also a few unique quirks. Although waste management technology has moved on somewhat, the high cost of changing CHPP waste circuits means that most mines with pumped codisposal will continue to discharge mixed waste slurry into CDAs. It is therefore worthwhile to share some lessons in the hope of promoting sounder design, operation and rehabilitation. These include: • Discharged waste does not form a homogeneous wholly competent deposit but instead comprises materials ranging from sandy gravel to silty clay with the distribution determined by movement of the discharge and decant structures; • CDAs circulate and contain a lot of water; • As a result of the first two points, some areas of the CDA comprise saturated fine waste that is no different from tailings and, like tailings, often behaves in an undrained manner; • Seepage is inevitable and desirable because strength improves as water is removed. However, stability is strongly impacted by pore pressures and in design these need to be rationally rather than optimistically considered; • As CDAs are built to about 40m or higher, strength-deformation characteristics of the foundation become more important; • Even if geomechanically stable, CDAs will need covers to prevent salts and acids from reaching the surface; and • Erosional stability of the cover material(s) will probably dictate maximum slopes for rehabilitation.

Investigation of the discharge duration power and current relation required for ignition. The current and power amplitude-discharge time curve was found to flatten out over 3 ms. It is concluded that discharges having at least 3 ms power maximum are required for reliable testing of the ignition limit for resistive circuits. Investigation of the effect of molten cathode on the discharge duration and igniting ability of the discharge. The surface tension of the liquid metal causes a very fast separation and consequently a much shorter discharge duration than the solid electrode would have. The minimum discharge voltage effect overrides the effects of the temperature of electrode, material, or atmosphere. Investigation of the effect of different surface layers on the discharge duration. Oxides and sulfates were found to give significantly longer duration than the "clean" metal itself in most cases. The lowest ignition current was obtained with CdS04 coatings. Ignition was obtained with 0.7A at 30V, which is below the corresponding minimum igniting current obtained from the BASEEFA curve for circuits containing Cd, Zn or Mg.

The objective of this contract was to provide thrust and torque control and visual output torque readout systems to an existing mine roof bolting machine and to test the consistency of torques obtained under actual field conditions. A Lee Norse TD1 roof bolter was modified by adding a simple torque sensing device to the drill rotation mechanism and a pneumatic logic control circuit that measures torque and controls the hydraulic circuit to the rotation motor. The modification controls and indicates the final installation torque of mine roof bolts. A total of over 5,000 mechanical roof bolts were installed in an operating coal mine. The installed torque of these bolts were within an error band (standard deviation) of 8%.

"Seawater has been reported to depress molybdenite in a copper-molybdenum (Cu-Mo) flotation process at high pH due to the precipitation of Mg(OH)2. Meanwhile, to improve mineral recoveries, collectors are usually added into the flotation cells, thus adding the complexity to the mechanism of bubble-particle interactions involved in Cu-Mo flotation. Therefore, understanding the interaction mechanism in seawater flotation and in the presence of collectors is important to explain the minerals depression. The present work investigated the effect of kerosene on the bubble collision and attachment to pure chalcopyrite and molybdenite surfaces in MgCl2 solution as one of the seawater major components at pH 6 and 11. Mineral surfaces were characterized using atomic force microscopy (AFM). In addition, minerals floatability in the same system were tested in a column flotation. The study of bubble-particle interactions shows that following several collisions, bubble could displace the intervening liquid layer on the mineral surfaces, forming a three-phase contact (TPC). A TPC formed more rapidly in the presence of emulsified kerosene in a 0.01 M MgCl2 solution at pH 6 for both minerals. The reason is kerosene increased the surfaces hydrophobicity and destabilized the intervening liquid layer on the surfaces. Moreover, the average time required to form a TPC was shorter on molybdenite surface. This can be attributed to the effect of adsorbed kerosene on molybdenite surface and molybdenite surface roughness.INTRODUCTIONIn froth flotation, bubbles are used to separate hydrophobic mineral particles from hydrophilic particles. In this process, bubble-particle interactions (i.e., collisions, attachment, and detachment) are crucial with regard to mineral recoveries. The effectiveness of froth flotation depends on the formation of stable aggregates between the hydrophobic particles and the bubbles, allowing the bubble to carry the particles to the froth layer. To form such aggregates, the bubbles and particles must collide, and the intervening liquid layer must be drained below the liquid layer critical thickness, forming a stable threephase contact (TPC) (Ralston & Dukhin, 1999). Particles detachment may take place if the particles still have sufficient kinetic energy and the TPC is not formed. Previous studies of bubble-particle interaction in electrolyte solutions have been conducted using atomic force microscopy (AFM) (Assemi, Nguyen, & Miller, 2008), and by approaching the bubble using mica plate (Pushkarova & Horn, 2008), however, these studies did not focus on the bubble-particle collisions. Bubble collisions and attachment to hydrophobic (Teflon) and hydrophilic (glass) surfaces in a a-terpineol solution have been investigated by Krasowka et al. (2003)."

Ultramafic soils display high concentrations of nickel (Ni) and a number of nutrient deficiencies (e.g. N, K, P). Ni-hyperaccumulator plants have evolved on such environments, developed specific metal homeostasis showing concentrations of Ni sometimes above 1% in their aerial biomass (Baker & Brooks 1989). Alyssum murale, a Ni-hyperaccumulator, is commonly found around the Mediterranean but can grow on non-ultramafic soils as well, with an altitudinal extension ranging from sea level to 2000 m.a.s.l. Rhizosphere bacterial communities associated with Ni-hyperaccumulator plants can differ from those of non-accumulating plants growing at the same site. Among edaphic factors that could influence the phylogenetic structure of the bacterial communities, altitude and metal-bioavailability and in particular nickel could be significant. However, most studies have focused on analyzing soils with techniques that provide little detail about the phylogenetic structure of these bacterial communities present in ultramafic soils. The objectives of this study were to understand the specific changes in the structure of A. murale rhizosphere bacterial community that occur across two gradients: 1°) elevation and 2°) Ni geochemistry, using pyrosequencing technique (454-pyrosequencing of 16S rRNA gene). It was found that the higher the soil chemically-available Ni contents, the higher the relative abundance of Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria. On the contrary, the abundance of TM7 decreased with increasing levels of available Ni. Moreover, Chloroflexi was present with 53 to 77% of relative abundance. These results demonstrate that soil chemically-available Ni drives the bacterial community diversity in the rhizosphere of Alyssum murale regardless the elevation gradient and other different soil physicochemical parameters. These results should now be confirmed in different ultramafic edaphic environments worldwide (e.g. ultramafic lateritic covers) and in the rhizosphere of different hyperaccumulator taxa.

Geotechnical exploration in North America, in particular, exploration for deep foundations analyses, is currently and generally performed following the most basic sampling and insitu testing methods and techniques. Some would surely say that the state-of-practice severely lags the state-of-the-art. Probably more than 90% of all deep foundations, both driven piles and drilled piers, installed in North America are initially analyzed and designed, i. e. geotechnically, on the basis of either the soil penetration resistance obtained by performing the "Standard Penetration Test" (SPT), or from laboratory shear tests performed on samples obtained using 76-mm (3-in.) nominal diameter, thin wall, "Shelby tube" samplers. The use of design data obtained with other exploration methods and devices, such as bore hole pressure meters, flat plate dilatometers, even cone penetrometers, occur on the fringes of practice and often in conjunction with the use of the two simpler methods of analysis. This basic approach probably represents an attempt of the profession to use, as much as possible, common, easily understood and easily communicated procedures in all geologic environments. The characteristics of drill rigs with the required drilling and samplng tools vary somewhat from region to region in North America according to the physiography of the area of use, the types of exploration data required on a day-to-day basis, the philosophy of the engineers and geologists that use the exploration data and the financial resources of the drill rig owner. The physical capability of the exploration drill rig used on a project can have a significant effect on the quality of samples or insitu tests. The physical configuration and the quality of the drill and the drilling, sampling and testing tools not only provide the mechanical capability to obtain data but affect the attitude of the field exploration crew and the quality of work. This complete presentation is taken, for the most part, from a book in preparation for publication: "Geotechnical Exploration and Site Characterization" by C. Riggs, A. Hatheway and N. Schmidt. "SUMMARYSeamounts are underwater mountains caused by volcanic activity. They are of great oceanographic interest because of their local and basin-scale influence over ocean systems, their often unique ecosystems, and because they are associated with the formation of ferromanganese (Fe-Mn) crusts. These crusts are of particular interest to scientists because they are rich in some of the rare elements increasingly required for development of renewable technologies. When the possibility of mining such seamounts is considered, an inter-disciplinary study of seamount hydrodynamics, crust formation and ecosystem sensitivity is required. MarineE-tech is one such multi-disciplined project that has been commissioned to address these different aspects in order to improve understanding of the viability and desirability of mining Fe-Mn crusts. This paper describes a key part of this study, namely the development of a model, informed by hydrographic observations, of the currents around one such seamount and the in situ validation of a sediment disturbance plume model as a pre-cursor to assessment of the potential effects of mining activity.INTRODUCTIONFerromanganese crusts are thought to form by precipitation of iron and manganese oxides from oxygen depleted mid-water known as the oxygen minimum zone (OMZ). Oxidation rich waters, typically at depths of about 800-2200 m (Hein et al, 2000). This range of depths coincides with the flanks and summits of many seamounts. The ferromanganese crusts found on seamounts have been found to have high concentrations of rare elements, like Tellurium, that are considered critical to low-carbon energy production. Seamounts are complex environments: in terms of the local hydrodynamics that tend to trap water over the seamount due to the Taylor Cap effect (e.g. Chapman and Haidvogel, 1992) and which can enhance the productivity of seamount waters through upwelling (Lavelle and Mohn, 2010), in terms of the microbiological activity that leads to the precipitation of the Fe-Mn crusts, and also in terms of the often unique ecosystems that are the product of the “island” nature of seamounts and the upwelling of nutrients. The understanding of this complexity is a necessary journey towards the realization of viable, yet environmentally responsible, mining schemes. The formation of crusts will be influenced by the local (and larger-scale) hydrodynamics. The exploration of promising crust sites could be made much more efficient by understanding where the most prospective deposits are likely to occur. Knowing how to remove these crusts without impacting significantly on the local environment will be a pre-requisite for such mining to be acceptable to the public and funders alike."

"There are increasingly stricter environmental regulations imposed for use of cyanide leaching for the extraction of gold from ores. Alternative lixiviants to cyanide, preferably with low toxicity, have been extensively studied. Thiosulphate has emerged as one of the most suitable alternative leaching agent in place of cyanide due to its low toxicity and technical attributes e.g. fast leaching kinetics, high gold extractions from carbonaceous ores in particular. High solubility of most copper minerals in cyanide solutions results in low gold extractions due to excessively high consumption of cyanide. In contrast, low reactivity of copper minerals in thiosulphate solutions makes thiosulphate leaching potentially suitable alternative for treatment Cu-bearing gold ores. The extraction of gold/silver from a copper-bearing pyritic gold concentrate (62 g/t Au, 110 g/t Ag and 0.3% Cu) in thiosulphate solutions was investigated in this study. The concentrate is composed of predominantly quartz (25%) and pyrite (32.7%) as well as sphalerite (5.37%), galena (2.12%) and anglesite (1.13%). Other minor minerals are arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite, covellite and bournonite. Previous studies by the authors indicated that the concentrate did not respond well to cyanide leaching (i.e. 45-46% Au/Ag at 1 g/L NaCN). The effects of concentration of ammonia (0.2-1.5 M NH3), thiosulphate (0.1-0.75 M S2O3) and copper (0-20 mM CuSO4) on the extraction of gold and silver over 8 h. was investigated. Increasing the concentration of thiosulphate and ammonia substantially improved the rate and extent of gold leaching while high copper levels produced an adverse effect particularly at low concentration of thiosulphate (i.e. 0.1 M). Complete extraction of gold was achieved under suitable conditions. In contrast to gold, silver extractions remained consistently at low levels (i.e. 28%). These findings demonstrated that thiosulphate leaching could be used to achieve acceptable levels of gold extraction from the copper-bearing pyritic gold concentrate."

The Wyoming Province is an Archean craton which underlies portions of Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Utah, and much of Wyoming. The cratonic block consists of Archean age granite-gneiss with interspersed greenstone belts and related supracrustal terranes exposed in the cores of several Laramide uplifts. Resources found in the Province and in the adjacent accreted Proterozoic terrane include banded iron formation, Au, Pt, Pd, W, Sn, Cr, Ni, Zn, Cu, and diamonds. The Province shows many similarities to the mineral-rich cratons of the Canadian shield, the Rhodesian and Transvaal cratons of southern Africa, and the Pilbara and Yilgarn blocks of Western Australia, where much of the world's precious and strategic metal and gemstone resources are located.

This report describes the results of a field study conducted by the Bureau of Mines during 1956 and 1957 on manganese-and iron-bearing mineral deposits in the southern district of Aroostook County, Maine. The work was undertaken to determine the extent of deposits largely concealed under glacial drift and to obtain subsurface samples for manganese mineral identification and research in ore dressing and extractive metallurgy. The investigation was confined to the Westford Hill-Daggett Hill area in Hodgdon Township and to the Stewart prospects and vicinity in Linneus Township. Over 50 magnetic anomalies were mapped by magnetometric surveys in the Westford Hill-Daggett Hill area, Hodgdon Township. In 1969, new coal mine health and safety legislation was enacted in the United States. As a result of this legislation, the Department of Interior, Bureau of Mines has carried out communications research aimed at developing whole mine communications for increased safety and efficient operation. The research has advanced and many promising results are now being demonstrated to the mining industry. However, there remains a challenge to further improve wireless communications within the mine workings, and through the overburden above the workings. The objectives for future research and development will be discussed, together with the physical and operational constraints that new mine communication systems must face.
