"INTRODUCTION This report gives preliminary results of field and laboratory investigations made at the request of the War Production Board relative to causes that have occurred during the last 8 months in acetylene-generat72,r plants in shipyards on the Pacific coast.Six acetylene-generator explosions have occurred in four shipyards. These explosions killed five operators, injured six others, and extensive damage to the plants involved and curtailmnent of vital defense Although the occurrence of acetyiene-generator explosions in other section of the United States is not known, it appears, at least, that if such have occurred, they have caused only minor damage and no loss of lives.The use of acetylene in shipyards on the west coast has expanded tremendously during the past 2 years. These shipbuilding, companies erected aletylene-generatcr equipment, which was soon found to be entirely inadequate to meet the needs of their expanding acetylene requirements for welding, cutting, shrinking, and other purposes, and instances found it necessary to operate their equipment at rates greater than deemed consistent with safe operating practice."

A series of diesel fuel fire experiments were conducted in the Pittsburgh Research Center's Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) to determine products-of-combustion (POC) spread rates along a single entry under zero imposed airflow conditions. Six experiments with an average fire intensity of 330 kW and three experiments with an average fire intensity of 30 kW were conducted in a 1 80 m long entry which had an average 2 m height and 4 m width. POC spread rates were measured by the response time of diffusion type CO detectors, positioned at 30 m intervals, to CO concentrations 5 ppm above ambient. For the 330 kW fires, average POC spread rates of 0.22, 0.13, and 0.06 m/s were determined at 30.60, and 90 m distances from the fire. For the 30 kW fires these average spread rates were reduced to 0.08, 0.04, and 0.04 m/s. The measured maximum roof layer temperature 30 m from two of the 330 kW fire was 30 and 36"C, which is less than the 57°C alarm point of a typical mine thermal sensor. It was determined that smoke detectors can be more effective for mine fire detection than CO detectors. The experimentally determined POC spread rates can be used to provide guidance for specification of sensor spacing to improve early fire detection at zero or very low air flows.

Cubic ZnSe crystals have been grown with HCl, HBr, and I, as chemical transport reagents. The growth of large, well faceted crystals is in the order HCl < HBr < I, with some produced by I, transport being 1 cm on an edge. ZnSe:I crystals showed no strain in cross polarized light and were homogeneous as determined by electron microprobe. These ZnSe:I crystals had a mobility at 25°C of about 300 sq cm per v-sec and contained 103 dislocations per sq cm; further, these crystals were pure cubic and showed both photolumi-nescence and photo conductance. Doping was attempted during crystal growth. ZnS and Zn (S,Se) crystals were also grown by I, transport. ZnSe crystals have been grown by most of the common techniques.1"6 Of these, chemical vapor transport as developed by Kaldis2 showed promise of producing high perfection, cubic ZnSe. With chemical transport, crystals can be grown far below the transition temperature for conversion of cubic to hexagonal structure. A small temperature gradient between source and growth region tends to allow near equilibrium growth, which should lead to good crystalline perfection. Because it is necessary to form volatile compounds, halogens or their compounds are extensively used as transport agents. HCl, HBr, and I, were compared as transport agents for growth of ZnSe crystals. Doping during crystal growth was attempted. ZnS and ZnSxSe1-x crystals were also grown by chemical transport. Electrical and optical properties of the crystals were examined. EXPERIMENTAL Fig. 1 is a sketch of the growth apparatus, which was a modification of Kaldis&apos;. A quartz rod which butted against the seed crystal served as a heat sink to promote growth only on the seed. Initially, crystal growth was attempted with ZnSe prepared by wet chemical methods. Because such a material contained oxides and selenates, HC1 reacted with these oxygen compounds to form H2O and no ZnSe transport occurred. Further, this ZnSe contained about 10 ppm Cu plus other impurities. High purity ZnSe, containing small amounts or no oxygen compounds, was prepared by reaction of H2Se with zinc vapors at 600° to 800°C in an atmosphere of palladium diffused H2.7 The ZnSe thus produced was usually copper free and contained only 1 ppm by weight of magnesium as determined by emission spectrographic analysis. G.E.&apos;s electronic grade ZnS, which had about 10 ppm metallic impurities, was used without further treatment. ZnS-ZnSe charges were prepared by mixing the two compounds together, then sintering 24 hr at 1100°C in an H2S ambient. The gases, HBr and HC1, were commercial grade, of 99.9 pct purity, while the I2 was 99.999 pct pure. The single crystal seeds with (111) faces for growth were mechanically held in place by sealing the outer quartz tube to the growth tube. After the charge was introduced, the system was outgassed at l0-5 torr while heated to 500°C. The desired quantities of transport reagents were then sealed off in the system, which had been cooled to 25°C. The growth tubes were inserted into a furnace with the desired temperature and thermal gradient. The system was allowed to cool for 1 to 12 hr from growth temperatures of about 850" to 25°C. The tubes remained stationary during crystal growth. HCl CHEMICAL TRANSPORT GROWTH Preliminary runs with HC1 had a temperature gradient of 100° to 200°C and no seed or heat sink. Nos. 50, 51 (13.10, 13.10) were dissolved and oxitfized as before, the iron precipitated by oxide of zinc, filtered and washed four times with cold water; and the manganese titered hot with permanganate. A conceptual scoping study was conducted to investigate pre-concentration options for upgrading ore from an Ag-Pb-Zn deposit. The low grade of the ore would result in only modest economic returns, given current market conditions. Several pre-concentration options were considered. These included: selective mining, crushing and pre-screening (following either standard or high intensity selective blasting), bulk ore sorting, particle sorting, jigging, dense medium separation, or combinations of these approaches. Flowsheets were developed for each option, and the upgrade performance was modelled using Limn to determine mass balances and stream tables. Due to the limited availability of test work data, the models were based not only on what test data was available but also on case study data found in the literature. The Bazin technique was used to derive assay by size data for different streams following crushing. Equipment lists and preliminary layouts were established based on the stream tables, and capital and operating costs were estimated for each flowsheet. This information was used to carry out a preliminary economic evaluation using net present value and sensitivity analysis. In this case, the most economically attractive process was found to be particle sorting; although further benefits may be realised by combining with bulk sorting. "Expanding upon one aspect of a recent paper on ""Fluid Column Roasting at Sherbrooke Metallurgical Co. Ltd.,"" the present paper deals with the operation of the fluid column process to achieve substantial elimination of cadmium and lead during the roasting of pelletized zinc concentrates. Designed to meet the need for additional feed for Matthiessen and Regeler Zinc Company's vertical retort zinc smelter in West Virginia, without recourse to a sintering operation, the plant is capable of simultaneously attaining very low lead and cadmium levels on demand, through operation in the manner described. Fluidizing air admitted via the wind box is supplemented by natural gas admitted via a tuyere bank 15 ins. above the hearth, in quantities adjusted to maintain a reducing atmosphere within the interstices of the bed. In addition, careful attention is paid to bed temperatures, which run from 1,080° to 1,100°C. Under these reducing conditions, 90 per cent of the cadmium and 92 per cent of the lead in the feed are eliminated, the sulphate sulphur content is decreased by 0.5 per cent, sulphide sulphur is held at 0.6 to 0.08 per cent, and the zinc content correspondingly in-creases. The fuel value of the natural gas is recovered as extra steam, which carries a credit. There are some added difficulties with fume accretions, gas conditioning and gas -cleaning, some of which have yet to be overcome."

The quest for a continuous copper smelting and converting process, which has been going on for a long time, has not as yet reached its objective. The most recent efforts for the development of a continuous copper?making process started about two decades ago. Among the contending proposed processes, four have been piloted and three of them are currently in operation: the WORCRA process., the NORANDA process, the MITSUBISHI process, the OUTOKUMPU process. The WORCRA process, after some long pilot plant tests, failed to develop as an industrial process: The NORANDA process, as currently operating, is a smelting process and not a continuous copper?making reactor as initially conceived. The MITSUBISHI, although the only continuous process, has not been widely accepted. The OUTOKUMPU process can be applied only to a low iron concentrate feed and co?produces blister and high in copper slag. The thermodynamics of these "continuous" systems and the practical problems of their industrial application are reviewed and discussed. The achievement of efficient and inexpensive environmental control should&apos; be the primary objective of any new process development. A review of the environmental problems of the copper industry indicates that the quest for a continuous smelting and converting furnace should be intensified.

For conventional aerospace aluminium alloys of the 2000 (copper) and 7000 (zinc, magnesium) series the recycling of process scrap from both metal suppliers and aircraft manufacturers is a well-established, worldwide industry. The recent introduction of a new family of alloys that incorporates lithium has posed a new challenge to the recycling industry owing to the high cost of lithium, its high reactivity to the atmosphere and to refractories and its absence from the specifications of all other registered alloys. Various process options for recycling have been identified, but vacuum distillation has been selected as the most cost-effective and technically feasible solution. Experimental work established that the separation of Li from AI-Li scrap is feasible and an industrial process has been designed. The economics of Li recovery are very sensitive to the AI-Li content of the feed material. Owing to the design of aerospace vehicle manufacturing plants it is expected that the swarf will be mixed with other alloys. A method of enriching this feed has been developed that is based on the control of swarf morphology by thermal and mechanical treatments as a precursor to eddy-current separation. After eddy-current separation and vacuum distillation small proportions of Li are retained in the AI residue. The effects of this on the properties of conventional AI-Si shape-casting alloys were investigated and safe threshold levels have been established.

The present paper firstly describes some recent trends from literature on energy management via process intensification to arrive at sustainable technologies for aqueous processing of minerals, metals and materials. Secondly, the energy saving measures practiced in leaching, solid-solution separation, solution purification, metal and material winning and environmental aspects have been discussed. The emerging importance of interdisciplinary nature of hydrometallurgy for practical applications is also highlighted. With the above background, the present paper describes an overview of energy conservation and autoclave processes with a special reference to hydrometallurgical research activities of our Laboratory.

The Dundee Precious Metals Tsumeb Smelter has evolved over the last decade to meet the challenges and opportunities brought about by a changing copper concentrate market, technological advances, environmental legislation as well as social and political changes. The paper discusses some of the challenges, successes and lessons learnt through the expansion and modernization of its smelter complex. It considers the details and impact of the transition from slag granulation to that of slag slow cooling as well as the improvement program that was implemented to more than double the refractory campaign life of the Ausmelt furnace from around 6–9 months to 15–18 months. In addition, given the evolving world we live in, it considers the challenges that the smelter faces today, not the least of it being how to remain relevant in an age of digital and other 4th Industrial Revolution disruptions. INTRODUCTION Dundee Precious Metals Tsumeb (DPMT) Smelter is located just outside the town of Tsumeb, in the Oshikoto region of Namibia. It is the largest town in the region with a population of approximately 45,000. The smelter was built in the early 1960s to treat concentrate from the nearby Tsumeb copper mines. Construction of the site was completed in 1962 and the smelter was officially commissioned in 1963 by Tsumeb Corporation Limited (TCL). At the time the smelter consisted of a lead section (including a refinery), a copper section and plants that produced cadmium, sodium antimonite and arsenic trioxide. Production commenced in early 1964, with 3,500 tonnes of copper and 6,000 tonnes of lead being produced per month. TCL was acquired by Gold Fields South Africa in 1988, and a few years later the lead section was shut down due to reduced lead content of the mined ore. In mid-1996, all mining and smelting operations were halted due to labour strikes. Ongopolo Mining and Processing Limited (OMPL) re-opened the mines and the smelter in 2000, only operating the copper section of the smelter. At the end of 2008, all mining operations were halted by the new owner of OMPL, Weatherly Mining International, while the smelter continued to operate. The closure of the Weatherly owned mines in Namibia, the primary feed source to the Tsumeb Smelter, meant that the smelter had to transition its business model from operating as a ‘captive smelter’ to that of a ‘toll smelter’. Its Ausmelt Top Submerged Lance (TSL) smelting technology and various ancillary plants made it especially suitable for accepting and treating complex concentrates that were available on the global market.

The automation (robotization) of coal mining activities at the face offers improvements in worker safety and productivity. The evolutionary introduction of autonomous, intelligent robotic machines to perform the most hazardous tasks may become a reality within the next 10 years. The U.S. Bureau of Mines Robotics and Automation research program is aggressively pursuing the development of the enabling technology necessary to achieve this goal. This program consists of both core and applications research, each focused on the fundamental issues of robotic technology. In the short term, the research is directed specifically to the robotization of present-day underground equipment and is being performed in a manner that can make incremental improvements in safety and productivity. The long-term goal is the development of intelligent autonomous mining systems.

INTRODUCTION This submission was made to the Royal Commission of Inquiry into uranium mining in British Columbia. It discusses the stability of waste rock piles that might be developed in conjunction with uranium mining and the control of leachates that might be generated within these waste rock piles over the short and the long term. Short term refers to the interval during which a waste rock pile undergoes either continuous, or alternatively intermittent development, and in general can be considered to extend over the operating life of the mine. Long term refers to the postmining period, i.e. after the ore-body has been exhausted, and mining operations have ceased. Two major classes of waste material are generated in the course of mining and milling operations. Tails, which are the solid waste materials produced by the milling operations commonly exit the mill in slurry form and are stored in tailing retention ponds. Management and control of these slurried wastes are the subject of other papers to the Commission and this conference. In the course of the mining operations, it may be necessary to remove rock materials that are below cut-off grade. That is, ore concentrations within some of the mined rock may be lower than the concentrations which on the basis of economic considerations justifies milling the material. Rock which is removed in the course of the mining operations, but which is below cut-off grade is referred to as waste rock. This waste rock is commonly consigned to a specific area for disposal where it is placed in a mound or pile, i.e. a waste rock pile. Ore concentrations within the waste rock may vary from zero to just below cut-off grade. Since an increase in the market value of uranium could at some time in future result in reduction of the cut-off grade, it follows that waste rock containing ore concentrations slightly below today&apos;s cut-off grade could become ore grade rock at some time in future. For this reason, the mine operators may deem it advisable to separate waste rock according to grade, and to consign the waste rock to two or more individual waste rock piles. For purposes of clarity and simplicity, this submission treats the stability of waste rock piles and leachate control in a manner which assumes that these potential problems are isolated and separate from other aspects of the mining and milling operations. For many site specific cases, the problem of potential leachate control might be integrated with the tailings management aspect of the project, thereby realizing economic benefits while at the same time reducing the potential for adverse environmental impact.

"Smelting reduction technology has been developed greatly in recent years. But one of the key problems for this technology is about the refractory that used as lining material in the molten bath. Investigation and test shown that corrosion rate of refractory was much higher and the corrosion mechanism was much more complexity in the molten bath of smelting reduction with iron bath than that of the blast furnace and rotary furnace technology [l-5]. The corrosion behavior and corrosion rate of Al2OrC-ZrO2 series refractory in the melt of smelting reduction with iron bath have been studied by rotary immersion and quasi-static immersion test in this paper. The major factors that affect the interaction between the melt and refractory were investigated. The test results shown that the corrosion rate of AI2O 3-C-ZrO2 series refractory decreased with the ZrO2 increasing when ZrO2 content was from 3% to 10%. Ferrous oxides content, relative moving speed between the melt and refractory and temperature of the molten bath were the important factors that affect the corrosion rate. But the ferrous oxides concentration was the most important one. The corrosion rate was increased as a linear relation with the rising of ferrous oxides content of the melt. The corrosion rate in the quasi-static immersion was much less than that of the dynamic immersion (rotary immersion) for the Al2O 3-CZrO2 series refractory in the same testing condition. The corrosion mechanism of Al2OrC-ZrO2 series refractory is: graphite oxidized in advance, then interaction between the constituents of refractory and melt taken place and deteriorate layer of refractory and new compounds were formed, the properties of refractory was changed.IntroductionSmelting reduction with iron bath is a typical technology [3, 4, 6]. The obvious features of the melt for smelting reduction technology with iron bath are much higher ferrous oxides and much more complexity melt composition and structure than that of the blast furnace technology [2, 5-8]. The properties of the melt were changed dynamicilly and constantly in reduction process. On the other hand, the behavior of the melt depends on the activity and the reduction rate of ferrous oxides in the molten bath[9]. Because of the high concentration of ferrous oxides in slag and high reduction rate in the molten bath, the corrosion behavior and corrosion mechanism of the refractory lining by melt are an important factor in development of the technology of smelting reduction with iron bath. Up to now, improving refractory quality to anti-corrosion of melt and developing high quality and long term refractory used as the lining refractory materials in the molten bath of the final reduction furnace are also the most important questions for developing smelting reduction technology."

The flotation process may be considered an interactive system consisting of many chemical, operational, and equipment variables. Changing anyone of these variables causes an overall system response change. This study examines the effects of simultaneously changing the operating variables of: (1) frother concentration and air flow rate, and (2) frother concentration and collector concentration. It is part of a comprehensive study to look at how changes in several of the major variables may be used to produce interactions which will allow the rougher flotation process to be optimized. Ultimate recovery, flotation rate, concentrate grade and froth quality, are used as the major evaluative criteria.

WHAT is the likelihood if any-that a real gold mining industry will be developed in the southern Appalachian region? Has the increase in the dollar value of gold from $20.67 to $35 per ounce potency to turn the trick? Suppose it be assumed that the price of gold will, at worst, not recede, and that the cost of digging ore and treating it of which the average level of commodity prices and wages is a fair index-will, at most, not exceed that prevailing in 1926. One may or may not accept these as reasonable assumptions; but one must arbitrarily remove some of the potential variables if one is to get anywhere on a problem like this. As a matter of fact, this article is not going to venture a conclusive answer to the question that has been posed; but it will endeavor to present some of the factors that have a bearing on the problem. The writer spent ten days visiting a dozen properties in Virginia and the Carolinas early in April, 1935, and in doing so got a first-hand slant on mining conditions in the domain of King Cotton.

In this study, the effect of silicon on the microstructure, mechanical properties and hot tearing susceptibility of permanent mould cast AZ91E magnesium alloy was investigated. Varying amounts of silicon (0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 wt.%) were added to AZ91E in the form of an Al-53 wt.% Si master alloy. The phase formation, grain size and solidification behavior of each alloy were characterized and related to their tensile properties and hot tearing susceptibility. The results showed that the addition of silicon resulted in the formation of Mg2Si particles. The presence of these particles led to an increase of the hardness, but was detrimental to the tensile strength and elongation of AZ91E. However, silicon significantly reduced the hot tearing susceptibility of AZ91E. This was attributed to the reduction of the grain size and the decreased freezing range of AZ91E, which contributed to improve the interdendritic feeding during the last stage of solidification.

Rock masses of the primary copper ore at the El Teniente Mine are very competent and massive. The rock mass contains almost no open discontinuities. Nevertheless, there is a high frequency network of small discontinuities coupled with widely spaced faults. A data collection campaign designed to characterize the rock structure was recently implemented. The results show that conventional analysis in terms of discontinuity frequency does not predict differences between two studied sectors. However, when an empirical definition of a weak discontinuity is applied, appreciable differences between the two sectors appear in terms of discontinuity frequency and predicted in situ block size distributions. These differences are in accordance with actual observations at the mine site. Due to the geological features of the primary copper ore, rock mass classification schemes cannot be readily applied to characterize these rock masses.

Exothermic oxidation reactions of sulfide minerals can produce self-heating situations in underground mines. If the self-heating is unchecked and the resulting heat is not sufficiently dissipated, the result can be spontaneous combustion fires. This U.S. Bureau of Mines report describes laboratory tests conducted to measure the reactivity of pyrite following treatment with additives to counter its self-heating tendencies. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and isothermal oxidation procedures were used to obtain information on pyrite ignition and the behavior of pyrite during low-temperature oxidation to ferrous sulfate. The determination of treatment effectiveness was evaluated by adding 5 wt pct of the compound to the pyrite before milling. The resulting samples were then heated in moistened air and after 24 h, the amount of pyrite oxidation determined. Results of these tests indicated that several phosphate compounds reduced the oxidation of pyrite to sulfate to about 50 pct or less compared with the oxidation of untreated sample at 200° C. Cupric sulfate reduced oxidation to about 20 pet untreated sample at 200° C. Sodium, calcium, and potassium chloride reduced pyrite oxidation to levels of approximately 15 pct or less of the untreated sample. Using only 1 pct of sodium or calcium chloride was effective in slowing pyrite oxidation to less than 20 pct of the untreated sample.
