HIS note reports the existence of several new scandium intermetallic compounds of the A2B and AB stoichiometries where the A element is scandium and the B element is from group VIII or IB of the periodic table. Alloys were arc melted from high-purity materials using 2-g charges. Typical lot analyses for the materials used are given in Table I. Chemical analyses were not made on the alloys as there was little or no weight loss on melting. After annealing the specimens for 14 days at 600°C and water quenching, metallographic and X-ray techniques were used to determine the occurrence of the various phases. Table II lists the relevant data for the A2B phases. The Ti2Ni structure,2 has ninety-six atoms in a face-centered cubic cell, whilst the Al2Cu structure is body-centered tetragonal.3 The occurrence and stability of the various A2B type phases in transition metal alloy systems has recently been considered by Nevitt.4 The Ti2 Ni-type phases occur over a relatively narrow range of radius ratios from 1.14-1.26 with A partners mainly from the titanium group and B partners predominantly from the cobalt group. This suggests that both a favorable relative size of the atoms and a favorable electron concentration are necessary conditions for the existence of this structure type. A12Cu-type phases involving Ti group elements as A partners are formed with B partners from the cobalt and nickel groups, predominantly the latter, and have a higher radius ratio (1.27-1.29) than the Ti2Ni-type phases. The occurrence of both Sc2Pd and Sc2Co can be rationalized in terms of these considerations but SczNi is anomalous because of its high radius ratio. The radius ratios are calculated from the Goldschmidt CN12 radii and it might be postulated that the scandium atom is reduced in size in the compound. Unfortunately the apparent atomic size of scandium in the compound cannot be calculated from a knowledge of the structure and lattice dimensions. The crystal structure of the Sc2Au compound could not be identified from the powder diffraction pattern, but it is interesting to note that it is isostructural with a series of A2Au phases where A is a rare earth element.5 Pertinent information concerning the AB phases found in this investigation is given in Table 111. All the phases have the ordered bcc CsCl structure. The occurrence and stability of CsC1-type phases have recently been discussed by Dwight,7 who concludes that the relative sizes of the atoms do not appear to be a controlling factor (the radius ratios of all the known phases vary between 0.985 and 1.439) but that the occurrence of the phase is predominantly dependent on the relative positions of the A and B partners in the periodic table. As a measure of the stability of a given CsCl phase it has been customary to define a lattice contraction on alloying, DAB — dAB, where DAB is the AB interatomic spacing as calculated from the Goldschmidt CN8 radii and dAB is the AB interatomic distance in the compound (= v3/2 ao). Values of the parameter DscB -dScB for the compounds found in this investigation are given in column 5 of Table III and are plotted in Fig. 1. If the lattice contraction does in fact reflect the stability of a phase then Fig. 1 shows two very interesting trends when the position of the B partner in the periodic table is considered. Firstly, within any given group the stability increases in order on going from the first to third long period. Secondly, within any given period the stability increases in order as the B partner is taken from the copper, nickel, and cobalt groups. A recent landslide comprising approximately 12 acres (4.86 hectare) and a displaced volume of more than 500,000 cy (382,000 m3) caused the shutdown of a four-lane state highway and two high-capacity freight railway lines. After completion of immediate landslide stabilization activities, various long-term slope stabilization measures were implemented that focused primarily on gradual slope unloading in areas near and upslope from the scarp of the landslide. Near the completion of the upslope excavation, an anchored soldier beam and lagging wall was constructed to allow for the temporary unloading of the toe of the main landslide area to facilitate installation of a permanent underdrain. The design of the anchored wall utilized information collected during the rehabilitation construction and included inclinometer data, site survey results, piezometer data, and field construction observations. Using the history of site-specific movements, results of back-analysis calculations from the landslide, and geometry/performance of the post-construction slope configurations, the fully softened and residual shear strengths along two potentially critical sliding surfaces were calculated. Owing to the high confidence in the values of shear strength as afforded by this information, the confidence in local groundwater conditions, and control of the loads, the designers selected a relatively low, calculated short-term factor of safety (FS) (i.e., FS ˜ 1.1 to 1.2) for the most critical unloading step. Long term calculated FS values on the order of 1.2 to 1.3 were anticipated. This paper describes the detailed evaluation of the landslide slope movement data associated with the shallow and deep potentially critical failure surfaces and selection of the associated values of design shear strength for these potentially critical surfaces. A description is presented of the analyses and design of the anchored wall, measures implemented during construction to minimize slope movements, and post-construction monitoring results during the unloading and subsequent installation of the underdrain.

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, investigated flotation methods for recovering fluorite and byproduct beryllium from the Fish Creek deposit of Nevada. The preferred method includes (l) fluorite rougher and cleaner flotation, (2) de sliming at 20 micrometers, (3) muscovite flotation, (4) silicate flotation, (5) hypochlorite wash of silicate concentrate, and (6) beryllium rougher and cleaner flotation from the silicate concentrate, Laboratory results showed that over 94 pct of. the fluorite was recovered in a concentrate containing 96 pct CaFz. Beryllium flotation produced .concentrates .containing in excess of 5 pct BeO with recoveries over 70 pct. A 1.00-lb/h continuous flotation unit was constructed to demonstrate this procedure,

Definition of glass sand prospects may be modified by constraints which range from demography to critically important product-control. Characteristics of usable raw materials, physical and chemical, are discussed; an ideal raw material is defined. Following field investigations and preliminary sampling, evaluation of selected prospects includes use of modern drilling techniques, viz.: core, percussion (air-hammer), auger, jet, rotary jet, split-spoon and other. Nearly complete core (sample) return is mandatory. Land-use regulations, availability of water and transportation continue to direct exploration in a major sense. But fitting a prospect to burdensome politics nay be considered a decidedly negative factor.

Hybrid stations provide an interesting alternative. In-house experience of Gautrain (South Africa), West bay (Qatar), Cairo line 3A (Egypt), and Melbourne (Australia) all aim to reduce disturbance to the city and its inhabitants during construction. Constructed in rock or in deep soil under water table, they take advantages of the latest construction techniques from cement grouting to freezing, and from traditional excavation of cavern to large tunnels constructed by sophisticated tunnel boring machines (TBM). Today, they form the ultimate construction challenge.

The Jewett mine is a surface mine in central Texas, producing about 8,000,000 tons/year of lignite. The mine covers 46,000 acres of land. Approximately 430 people are employed by Northwestern Resources Company and through their efforts, the Jewett Mine is one of the most productive mining operations in the country. The Jewett Mine utilizes a unique structure of staff to convert Operations Research into plans which can be implemented at the "front line" level of the Operations Team. This planning not only makes the mine cost effective and efficient, but promotes creativity in mining, which promotes ongoing research to lower the cost of mining.

An impact wear testing machine was devised by the Bureau of Mines that simulates the repeated impact conditions encountered in large milling and grinding operations where breakage and spalling are problems. The apparatus provides data on materials that may help in the design of alloys with improved resistance to deformation, spalling, and breakage. The test blocks are 2 in thick by 6 in by 8 in. Impacts are produced by dropping 3-in-diam balls weighing 4 lb from a height of 10 ft. Tests were run until breakage occurred or to a total of 100,000 impacts. Four types of failures of the test block were observed: (1) cold flow of the bulk material by plastic deformation, (2) flaking of the surface in the impact region, (3) spalling of the block to form a crater in the region of impact, and (4) breakage of the test block into two or more major pieces. The effects of composition, heat treatment, microstructure, and hardness on types of failure are discussed.

In order to prevent roof fall accidents and injuries, U.S. underground coal mine operators must develop and implement effective roof control strategies. Various tools are available to assist engineers in developing designs. For example, criteria to address global stability issues (e.g., pillar stability) are well established in the U.S.; effective tools (e.g., empirical and numerical) are available to diagnose potential problems and avoid catastrophic failures. However, most miner injuries occur as a result of local instability (e.g., a roof fall in a single heading or a rib roll from a pillar corner). Hazard recognition and the availability of support plans suitable to those conditions are key to maintaining stability and safety on the working section.

The Lafitte field, the largest oil reserve in South Louisiana, is in Jefferson Parish, some 25 miles due south of the City of New Orleans. The discovery well, The Texas Company's No. I, Louisiana Land and Exploration Co., in the southeast corner of sec. 19, T. 17 S., R. 24 E., was completed on May 15, 1935. The initial production of this well was 960 bbl. of 34.9º A.P.I, gravity oil per day, through 1/4-in. choke, with a tubing pressure of 1600 lb. per sq. in. Producing depth was 9558 to 9572 ft., the total depth being 9572 feet. The development of the field has been at the rate of three to eight new producing wells per year. Up to Jan. I, 1944, 60 producing wells and three dry holes had been drilled, while two of the original producing wells had been abandoned, Although the field is not unitized, The Texas Company was the sole operator in the field until the Lafitte Oil Co. completed its NO. I Jefferson Parish, near the center of the west line of the NW/4 sec. 20, T. I7 S., R. 24 E., on July 27, 1941. No additional wells have been drilled by the Lafitte Oil Company. Drilling and WeLl-completion Practices All drilling operations have been conducted with the steam-driven rotary equipment mounted on submersible barges. A canal is dug to the well location and the drilling unit is floated into position. The seacocks are then opened and the barge settles to the bottom. After the well is completed, seacocks are closed and water is pumped out of the barge. This procedure permits the barge, with drilling equipment still in place, to be floated and moved off the location. The conventional open-hole and the gun-perforation method of completing wells has been used in this field. Where possible, the initial completion is from the deepest 'sand and recompletions are made progressively up the hole, by plugging back with cement to the upper sand and gun-perforating opposite the new sand. The oil string usually is 7 5/8 in., 26 to 34-lb. casing. Three wells have been completed using 9 5/8-in. 44-lb casing set below 10.000 feet. Fig. I shows the completion and recom-pletion practices on one well in the field. This figure also shows the relative locations of the different producing sands as shown on the electric well log. Structure The structure is an elongated dome, cut by two north-south faults, which divides the field into three segments. The west segment is the highest structurally and contains most of the recoverable oil and gas. The center segment is less important and the east segment is of little value. Humate, defined as weathered coal or mud-stone rich in humic acid (HA) and fulvic acid (FA) have been mined, primarily as soil amendments or drilling mud additives, in New Mexico for 15-20 years. The New Mexico humate resource is estimated to be 11 Gt, including weathered coal and organic mudstone. The HA and FA content determines the end-use, therefore a simple and consistent method of measuring organic-acid content was developed. The New Mexico Bureau of Mines and Mineral Resources method is based on repeated alkali leaching and acid precipitation. Precipitates of humate are ashed, with mass balance of solids maintained, to correct for material added during alkali-acid treatment. Analyses of upper coal member, Cleary Coal Member (Menefee Formation) and Fruitland Formation samples from the southeast San Juan Basin show ashing to be important in accurate analysis of FA content. Ash in the total FA fraction averages 70% compared to 2% in HA. The FA in weathered coal and organic mudstone are similar, although HA is significantly higher in the former. As weathering progresses, the FA content of weathered coal increases faster than in organic mudstone because of the greater total organic material in coal.

The world’s climate today has changed compared to 10 or 20 years ago. Many countries face water shortages; water sourcing for mining activities has become harder to secure. ESG’s focus on the industry has made us more aware of the need to preserve and responsibly use the water needed for wet processing in our milling and sorting activities. In a recent greenfield project in South Australia, 10 Gigalitres per annum would be required to process 5Mtpa of magnetite [1]. Published information indicates that the mining industry consumes approximately 12 EJ per year—or 3.5% of total global final energy consumption globally [2] or 3.33 trillion kilowatt hrs. This energy consumption is significant, considering the critical role mining plays in extracting and processing essential minerals for economic development and human progress. The perception of the mining industry is that not only does it consume significant power, but it also consumes a lot of the freshwater in the world. In fact, it consumes approximately 5% [3] of the total freshwater demand. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), by 2050, 60% of the world’s population will be living in countries that are classed as water-stressed [3]. As more and more emphasis is placed on renewable energy sources, the amount of water used in mineral processing will increase because more and more raw materials require a water-intensive process. This increases the pressure on the mining industry to try and find water-saving initiatives. As part of this review, recent advancements in magnets have enabled magnetite processing facilities to achieve between 30 to 40% dry gangue material rejection before the wet beneficiation process (grinding and sorting). This reduction in energy consumption allows the reduction of energy consumption. Secondly, there is less material ground in the mills, which requires less water for mineral downstream processing.

"No true conception of the Park City mining district can be obtained without first giving consideration to the part it has played as a consistent producer of mineral wealth. Its position in this regard is almost unique in the annals of a lead silver camp. For over fifty years it has been a continuous producer of lead and silver and for twenty years it has added to the world's supply of zinc. Few camps with its productive history are so little known to the mining fraternity for the reason that its life has never been punctuated by periods of ""boom"" which serve to attract general attention, neither has it been the field of operation for promoters who temporarily focus attention upon their scene of action. Its history is one of legitimate mining operations. These were at first carried on by a number of smaller companies. A period of consolidation followed and at the present time the entire production of the camp is in the hands of two major companies and one smaller company. These are flanked by a number of prospecting properties, which are at this time actively engaged in the search for ores and later events will doubtless put some of them in the producing class.A technical discussion of the ore occurrence and mining operations in the camp will be the subject of a paper to be read before this meeting of the Institute. The mission of this article is to supply a ""Baedeker"" where Baedeker is lacking.The town of Park City is a typical, up-to-date, western mining camp which owes its existence as a town of 4,500 inhabitants solely to the mining industry. The camp is located 7,000 feet above sea level, thirty-two miles east of Salt Lake City. It is situated on the Victory Highway seven miles from its junction with the Lincoln Highway and has the benefit of excellent automobile communication with the metropolis of the state. Both the Denver and Rio Grande and the Union Pacific Railroads give daily train service to the camp and effectively solve the transportation problems of the mining companies."

"INTRODUCTION The great demand for tungsten incident to the war has led to the exploration of a large number of low-grade tungsten deposits. To properly evaluate the low-grade deposits it is essential to have available a dependable method of analysis applicable to all types of low-grade tungsten ores. Results reported on the tungsten content of the ores have often varied quite widely and have led to confusion. The Bureau of Mines has been requested by Government lending agencies and by companies interested in the production of tungsten to publish a general method for the determination of tungsten in low-grade ores. To meet this need, the Bureau of Mines is herein submitting two methods for analysis that have been proved on a large number of tungsten-bearing ores various types in the Bureau of Mines laboratory in Salt Lake City. Also, a third method was developed that requires no cinchonine and has proved to be applicable on most tungsten ores. The cinchonine method is the generally accepted for analysis of tungsten ores. Very reliable results can be obtained by this method if certain precautions are taken, as outlined in this report."

Water is a strategic resource for the mining industry. The rising cost has forced the industry to become more efficient in their use, reduce and recycle waste as much as possible. The importance of having a reliable water balance is increasingly urgent, because the resource is scarce and vital to the sustainability of human life, animal and ecosystem. Conventional flowmeters can suffer disruptions or failures by corrosion, fouling, presence of elements in the water as acids, salts and suspended solids. Use of radiotracers is advantageous to determine fluid velocities that are transported through pipes, as they are detectable by means of the radiation emitted, the same way for surface flows, such as natural watercourses and drainage from tailings dams, fluorescent tracers are those with the best advantages. For velocity measurements in pipelines a Iodine-131 tracer solution, around 5 mCi was injected into the suction of the pumps. The technique used is the transit time between detectors at known distances and determining the time of passage of the radiotracer. For measurements of surface fluxes using the fluorescent tracer Rhodamine WT by tracer dilution technique, injecting the tracer at a constant rate and measuring it known concentration diluted downstream. This work has been performed in Minera Los Pelambres, located in the IV Region of Chile, measuring the flow rate pumped from 12 pools with 1-7 pumps operating, obtaining speeds of 0.56 to 2.62 m/s. In pumping wells three facilities have been measured at speeds of 0.111-0.223 m/s, plus six surface flows with flow rates of 8.45 to 357.2 L/s.

The molten metal circulation pump has become a staple for melting aluminum in reverberatory furnaces. The forced convection that is created in the melt efficiently provides circulation while dramatically improving melt rates, lowering fuel consumption, extending refractory life, and providing metallurgical homogeneity. Two metallurgical guidelines that are important to many casthouses are molten metal inclusion levels and hydrogen gas content. In order to improve molten metal quality, furnace and casting practices must 'manage these molten metal defects, Today specialized in-line degassing and filtration equipment is used downstream of the furnace to accomplish these tasks. In contrast, the molten metal gas injection pump has metallurgical contact time in the process for hours during the charging/homogenization cycle. The qualitative benefits of employing a gas injection pump to "pre-clean" are outlined and discussed against historical empirical information obtained with alternate methods. Further, a recent study quantifies the merits of this gas injection technique as an effective molten metal quality improvement tool. Specifically, the effects on inclusion level as determined by PoDFA?, gas content as determined by A1SCAN? sampling and alkali metal content as determined by spectrographic analysis are examined in relationship to various gas feed compositions and flow rates.

In this study, a unique excavation system was characterized, utilizing waterjet technology as the primary tool for material removal during rehabilitation of reinforced concrete and shotcrete structural liners. Through empiric testing, this research seeks to validate the hypothesis that waterjet removal of these support systems will result in less unintended damage than conventional removal methods. The intent is to develop a viable technology that will reduce the collateral damage caused to surrounding liners during excavation, improve the adhesion between shotcrete and the substrate for longer lasting ground support, and improve overall safety for workers in underground environments. An analysis on the fracture mechanisms and operating parameters of each method was completed. Instrumented shotcrete panels were physically tested and examined through visual inspection and ground penetrating radar (GPR) to compare substrate damage according to each testing method. After testing was completed, the data strongly indicates that waterjet cutting causes less collateral damage to the surrounding intact liner and substrate when compared to that of conventional impact hammers. This research is intended to provide a scientific basis for additional applied research in the rapid excavation and repair of shotcrete support systems.

A significant basemetal province is recognised in the southern part of the Bonaparte Basin, Western Australia. Epigenetic stratabound carbonate hosted Pb-Ag-Zn mineral- isation occurs in dolomites of Tournasian age within a marginal marine transgressive carbonate and fine grained clastic sequence, spatially overlying the lagoonal facies of a Late Devonian reef complex. The deposits comprise coarse grained sulphide mineralisation characterised by high Pb:Zn ratios (10:1) and high silver (50 g/t) content. They occur at shallow depth, are flat to moderately dipping, and form a discontinuous mineralised trend at the margin of the Sorby Platform, which flanks a Precambrian basement high. Host rocks are predominantly sedimentary breccias and dolomitised footwall carbonates associated with a significant local unconformity transgressed by a siltstone cap rock sequence. The deposits are structurally related to synsedimentary growth faults, local basement highs and tensional en-echelon breccia systems. Fluid inclusion studies have concluded that mineralisation was deposited from a low temperature (85¦C-115¦C) saline ore forming solution. Lead isotope work reveals a Precambrian genetic source of the lead. Locally remnant textures after sulphates are recognised within the host sequence together with common bitumen and oil shows. Reduction of sulphate to H2S was possibly facilitated by either bacteria. activity, or by residual hydrocarbons which acted as a reducing agent. An alternative source of H2S may have been afforded by the thermal degradation of hydrocarbons. A 'mixing' genetic model is proposed for the mineralisation, which conceives the expulsion of metal enriched basinal brines followed by their precipitation as sulphides after mixing with locally derived reduced sulphur solutions at relatively shallow depths in their structural/stratigraphic sites of ore deposition.

A concerted effort between Akan International Limited and the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) has been initiated to develop a liquid-based slurrymaking process, dubbed SEED (Swirled Enthalpy Equilibration Device) for semi-solid forming. The technology is presently entering the industrial and commercial stages, and will be used by the first customers at the end of 2006. Semi-solid processing of aluminium alloys offers many advantages in fabricating economically near-net-shape parts of superior quality. The SEED process helps to overcome problems experienced with thixocasting and especially the high cost of feedstock. The SEED process involves two main steps: 1) heat extraction to achieve a desired liquid/solid mixture, and 2) drainage of an excess liquid to produce a self-supporting semi-solid slug that is formed under pressure. The heat transfer plays an important role (enthalpy equilibrium) during the manufacture of the semi-solid slurry and its analysis is briefly described. The semisolid material is obtained using different processing times and initial conditions. The impact on the solid fraction distribution and the morphological evolution of the microstructure is presented. The influence of the SEED processing parameters (slurry preparation) and the resulting mechanical properties for the alloy A356 are also reported.

The CP-3A contract is the final segment of the MWWST’s 28.3 km (17.6 mile)pressurized water supply tunnel for the metropolitan Boston area. The 1,288 m (4,226 feet) of U-shaped tunnel alignment passed through five rock zones employing four different primary support systems. The short tunnel began in Weston, Massachusetts, at Shaft 5A in soft, completely weathered argillite, passed through a fault zone, and ended in Dedham granite. An 18-foot diameter horseshoe starter tunnel was built to accommodate a 4.94 m (16-foot 2 1 / 2 inch) diameter Robbins TBM. Heavy water inflows were anticipated and subsequently encountered during probe drilling. Pre-excavation grouting was implemented at high pressures to displace high water inflows in the starter tunnel and consolidate the fault zone. This paper will provide an overview of the tunnel construction with an emphasis on ground control, grouting and survey control.

High Voltage Pulse (HVP) technology has the potential to transform traditional mineral processing practice in the mining industry. HVP pre-treatment has been shown to enable ore preconcentration, achieve ore pre-weakening and improve mineral liberation. In order to improve the efficiencies of these novel HVP applications, it is essential to understand how HVP operational factors affect ore breakage in HVP pre-treatment. A two-level fractional factorial experiment using two rock samples, a gold-copper ore and a basalt sample, was performed to determine which factors have statistically significant influences on breakage probability, size reduction, and energy efficiency, and which factors have insignificant influences. Operational factors investigated include applied voltage, electrode gap, number of pulse discharges, the number of rocks being processed per batch, and rock size. In total, 1920 batch tests were conducted. For ore breakage characterised in terms of breakage probability and the degree of size reduction during HVP pre-treatment, the dominant factors were identified to be the number of pulse discharges, voltage, and the number of particles present in the processing zone. As all these three factors are related to the specific energy, it is concluded that the specific energy is the most important factor controlling ore breakage in HVP treatment. In terms of the efficiency by which spark energy is transferred from the generator energy, the factors found to have the most dominating influence were the particle size, the number of rock particles present in the processing zone and the voltage. Increasing the values of these factors reduced the loss of HVP energy during the energy transfer process. The factorial experiment using the two ore samples with vastly different mineralisation produced similar results.
