The performance of RETIMET metal foam as a flame arrester on explosion-proof enclosures was investigated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines both in laboratory tests and at the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration's (MSHA's) Approval and Certification Center, Triadelphia, WV. The objective of this research was to develop a permissible pressure vent for use on lightweight, vented, explosion- proof enclosures. In laboratory tests, four grades of RETIMET, a stainless steel foam material, were evaluated: (1) 45 NC-7, (2) 45 NC-13, (3) 80 NC-7, and (4) 80 NC-13. Explosive gas mixtures were prepared by a dynamic flow system. Ignition was by a low-voltage arc. Each grade of RETIMET metal foam successfully arrested the flame front in all methane-air tests. To evaluate RETIMET metal foam on large, commercial size enclosures, a multicompartmented enclosure was designed and tested in MSHA's explosion gallery in Triadelphia, WV. Extensive explosion testing revealed that a minimum vent-area-to-enclosure-volume ratio of 11.33 in2/ft3 is required to keep internal pressure rises below 3 psig. The RETIMET metal foam functioned satisfactorily in all tests as evidenced by the absence of external ignitions.

The AG/SAG circuit discharge P80 is now increasingly referred to as the ?Transfer Size? or T80 for short. From the literature it is apparent that in circuit design some approaches to the sizing of AG/SAG mills as well as the ball mills that they feed use this parameter. This paper reviews whether the use of the T80 is appropriate in this context. In the course of the review examples of AG/SAG discharge size distributions measured from range of operating circuits are used to illustrate the arguments made.

The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the ash-softening temperature, the free-swelling index, and the Hardgrove grindability index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions2 issued by the Bureau of Mines; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor; if it is not, a price adjustment is made, Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. In addition, the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal.

ChillaQoe is situated in latitude 17" S., about 138 miles from the port of Cairns, with which it is now connected by rail. A township has been established on the banks of Chillagoe creek, a perennial stream of irregular volume crossing the field almost at rightrangles, nearly midway between the mining-camps of Calcifer and Mungana, which have been formed at the southeastern and western extremes of the field respectively. This situation was selected because of the water-supply and its proximity to the site most suitable for the erection of reductionworks. By its central position it commands the whole of the mines. The altitude above sea-level is about 1200 ft., whereas that of Calcifer and Mungana is 1400 ft.—a difference sufficient to account for a materially higher temperature at Chillagoe. The surrounding limestone bluffis add by radiation to the heat, and, at the same time, prevent the cool breezes from passing freely through the town; consequently, the temper* ture, which is high throughout the year, and especially so during the summer months, is here ge~ierally very oppressive also. The general trend of the field is southeast and northwest, and its length about 18 miles, with an average width of 5 miles; the approximate area is thus 90 sq. miles. The surrounding mineral-district is, however, much more extensive, and numerous other mines, sprcad over wide areas and producing a variety of minerals, exist in the same or parallel belts of mineralized country, of which Chillagoe proper covers but a very small portion. Immense bluffs of limestone, wollastonite and conglomerate, rising in places to nearly 300 ft., and so~netimes nearly a quarter-mile across, give the field a very picturesque and interesting appearance. In attempting to study precipitation from a tetragonal lattice, using solid solutione of bismuth in tin, it was found that although a Widmanstätten pattern is observed1,4 only a qualitative analysis of the orientation relationships is possible, because of the unusual structural changes that accompany the precipitation process. Microscopical Studies Alloys were made from Chempur tin (Standard samples 42b and 426, National Bureau of Standards), and bismuth (Kahl-baum C.P.) by melting weighed quantities together under palm oil, stirring well, and castilig in a heated graphite mold. The polishing and etching techniques employed largely govern the visibility of the structural changes. The preliminary surfacing operations were similar to those recommended by Villela and Bergekoff,5 through Behr-Manning 3/0 abrasive papers, lubricated by a solution of paraffin in kerosene. A rough metallographic polish was next given, using a thin cotton cloth charged with relevigated alumina (maximum particle size of about 4µ) and soap solution; repeated etching and polishing served to remove disturbed metal. For high-power examination better preparation was necessary. It was found that on such soft metals the threads of the fabric, rather than the abrasive, cause most of the scratching. Cotton outing flannel, which had been brushed so that the nap lay down, was fairly satisfactory, but a heavy grade of silk velvet (not the noncrushable kind) was found to be better, especially after some use. A better procedure was as follows: The metal lap was warmed slightly, and a 4-in. circle of woolen broadcloth was cemented to its center by a thin film of melted paraffin. The broadcloth was then moistened with water, and a 30 to 40 per cent solution of sodium hydroxide heated to about 50°C. was poured over it, allowed to stand for I to 2 min. and then washed off. It was neither necessary nor desirable to remove all the sodium hydroxide from the cloth, since its etching action aided in the removal of the flowed layer from the sample. The cloth was then charged with a paste of the relevigated alumina in water. Since this lap did not remove deep scratches, it was necessary previously to polish the specimen on some material such as the silk velvet. The sodium hydroxide softens and partly gelatinizes the woolen lap covering, permitting a scratch-free polish, but its action continues, and the cloth deterioratcs after about 24 hr. This is not serious, because a new lap can be prepared in about 5 min., and only small pieces of cloth are used. Etching with a strongly acid solution of ferric chloride was found satisfactory for removing the flowed layer. For the final etching, the most satisfactory reagent was that of Tafls,7 the formula for which is: FeC13.6H2O, 2 grams; HC1, 5 c.c.; H2O, 30 c.c.; C2H5OH (95 per cent), 60 C.C. One of the main functions of a process technology and engineering services provider is to select grinding equipment that will meet the client?s throughput rate target. Prudent risk mitigation strategies would suggest that throughput rate estimates be cross-checked using a variety of techniques. Whilst some comminution circuit designers have estimated specific energy requirements via the manipulation of the Bond specific power equation e.g. Barratt?s Grindpower and OMC?s FSAG approach, other designers have opined that the Bond Indices have no role to play in the calculation of SAG mill specific power. As a result, they have developed their own specific energy estimating methodologies, e.g. SMCC?s Drop Weight based power methodology, SPI, SAGDesign, etc. Each method has its supporters and its critics. The challenge facing the engineering provider is how to nominate an SAG mill based circuit throughput rate estimate when faced with significantly disparate specific energies calculated by the different methodologies. This challenge is exacerbated via the continuing evolution of contemporary circuit configurations such as two stage pebble crushing some of which incorporate HPGR technology as the second stage of pebble crushing. The methodology presented in this paper shows that the Bond Indices are an excellent tool for estimating the specific energy requirements for SAG mills in SAB, SABC and SSS circuits. The method accommodates primary crushed feeds, partial and or fully secondary crushed SAG mill feeds, and emulates the impact of pebble crushing on SAG specific energy. As a result, the new Bond Index based method has provided an additional tool for increasing Fluor?s confidence when predicting SAG mill based circuit throughput rates. Based on this outcome, the author proposes that the decades old conundrum of using Bond Indices to calculate SAG specific energies for SAG mill based circuits has been solved.

An investigation was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines to determine the relationship between freespace and ignition probability for borehole shots. A series of experiments was concluded which covered six freespace conditions for a pemissible explosive in a 3/4-inch borehole and encompassed some 700 shots. The results were analyzed statistically. From the analysis of variance, it was concluded that the freespace means were different and that this conclusion is not impaired by possible differences in the explosives used. Within the limitation of this experiment, a definite relationship was found between the freespace and the ignition probability. Specifically, the incendivity increases with increased freespace up to a maximum; beyond this maximum there is some indication of decreasing incendivity. Further investigations are in progress to establish whether the effects of freespace on ignition probability reported here are applicable to the large test gallery, INTRODUCTION A borehole loaded with an explosive charge is a common feature of the routine gallery tests for determining the permissibility of coal-mine explosives, of Experimental Coal-Mine shots, and of the small steel cannon shots used in connection with certain research programs on the ignition of firedamp (6, 10).6/ The question of the interrelationship of freespace, weight of charge, and ignition probability of the methane-air atmosphere has been raised

The self-diffusion coefficient of chromium in various alloys in the iron-chromium system has been measured. A variation in Dofrom 10-4 for pure chromium to a maximum of 102 near 60 pct Cr appears with a range of activation energy from about 50 to 80 kcal per mol. The general pattern of behavior observed is not consistent with present theories of diffusion by a vacancy mechanism. Suggestions are made for further clarifying experiments. RECENT work on the self-diffusion of chromium,' ?-uranium2-4 and ß-zirconium,23, 26 has indicated that these elements have very low Do (10-3 to 10-4) compared to that conventionally expected for vacancy diffusion. Pound et al.5 have suggested that this may be due to ring diffusion being operative, and have proposed a model which gives Do of the correct order of magnitude. The essential difference between this model and Zener's earlier model6 is that whereas Zener assumes tight coupling between atoms in a ring to establish a vibrational frequency, Pound's model allows the atoms to vibrate essen- tially each in their own normal modes. The probability of each atom moving in the correct direction to cause a ring of n atoms to rotate by 2p/n must then be calculated as a "synchronal entropy" which may be -20 e.u. for a 4 atom ring. In iron, the latest determinations of self-diffusion yield Do in the range 18 to 522.7-9 The most accurate is probably that of Borg and Birchenall8 which is 118 ± 3. This value is not inconsistent with that expected for a vacancy mechanism. Since iron and chromium are very closely similar in size, are both transition metals, and their solution is thermodynamically ideal at temperatures of interest in diffusion, it appeared that a determination of self-diffusion coefficients, Do and Q as a function of composition would be of substantial interest to diffusion theory. The following measurements were made with this purpose in mind.

INTRODUCTION The Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP), commonly known as the Deep Tunnel Project, is the daring and unique concept developed by the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRDGC) as a two-phase solution to the problem of waterway pollution and basement flooding due to sewer system backups created by the combined sewer over-flows (CSOs). Phase I, primarily for pollution control, includes the tunnels, shafts, connecting sewers and structures. These Phase I facilities intercept, during wet weather events, the CSOs within the MWRDGC TARP service area. The tunnels and shafts provide temporary storage of the CSOs for subsequent treatment at Water Reclamation Plants (WRP) before discharging into waterways. Ultimately, upon completion of Phase II, the tunnels, located from 45 m(150 ft) to 100 m (330 ft) below ground, will convey the CSOs to reservoirs for storage until WRP capacity is available. Phase II, which includes the reservoirs, pumping facilities, additional tunnels and shafts, has been planned to serve a dual purpose. The reservoirs provide storage of excess flows during wet weather events, those beyond the WRP capacity. Following the wet weather events, the stored flows can be conveyed, at controlled rates, to the WRPs for full treatment. These excess flows previously would have resulted in both overflows into the waterways and eventually backups in the local sewer systems. The storage capacity of the reservoirs also will promote the full utilization of the conveyance capacity of the tunnels and shafts, which in turn results in optimizing the conveyance capacity of the existing sewer systems. Therefore pollution control is further enhanced by allowing for capture of a greater volume of CSOs and greatly minimizing backups in the local sewer systems. The TARP project consists of four systems: O’Hare, Mainstream, Des Plaines, and Calumet, covering a total area of 971 km2 (375 mi2) and serving the City of Chicago and 51neighboring communities as shown in Figure1. With only two contracts left before completion of the Phase I tunnels, the 12.7km (7.9mi) Torrence Avenue leg, to be awarded in 1997, and the 12.4km (7.7mi) Little Calumet leg unfunded as of yet, both part of the Calumet System, the pollution control phase of the project is now 86% complete (Table 1).

Asimismo, la región de la Cordillera Occidental desarrolló campañas de exploración que condujeron al descubrimiento de numerosas zonas mineralizadas y prospectos de interés económico, debido a las favorables condiciones geológicas para el descubrimiento de diferentes tipos de yacimientos ya sean diseminados, en stockworks o filonianos, con mineralización de plata, oro, plomo, cadmio, indio y germanio, entre otros. En este sentido, el presente texto señala los resultados de esta exploración, los ciclos evolutivos, su cronología absoluta, los rasgos geoquímicos y potencial minero de la región andina. "

The mechanism of flotation of sphalerite with sulthydryl compounds of different acidities has been interpreted in terms of chemisorption of unionized collector molecules on hydroxylated zinc surface sites. At a constant collector concentration of 1.5 x 10 -4 M, the upper pH limit of flotation has been found to be directly and closely related to the negative logarithm of the collector acidity constant, pKa The experimental results indicate that flotation is prevented when about 95% of the collector is ionized. At low pH, collector adsorption decreases because of the reduction in number of hydroxylated zinc surface sites. These two effects explain why sphalerite does not float with the more acidic sulfhydryl compounds. Typical anionic collectors for sulfide minerals are short chain xanthates or dithiophosphates which are nearly completely ionized in the generally alka- line flotation circuits.1,2 Flotation mechanisms have therefore been usually interpreted in terms of ionic collector adsorption and competition with ionic depressants of the same sign as the collector. A few attempts have been made, however, to consider adsorption of neutral collector molecules. Contact angle measurements obtained by Wark and cox3 have been interpreted by Cook and Nixon4 as representing adsorption of the free acid molecules on sulfide minerals such as pyrite, galena, chalcopyrite, and sphalerite. Cook and Nixon tried to show that the free acid concentration of the collector was substantially constant along the curves relating collector addition and minimum pH for bubble adherence. However, in a review of the subject,5 Sutherland presented new data on the flotation of pyrite with mercaptobenzothiazole which did not support the hypothesis of constant concentration of either collector ions or collector free molecules. He further showed that, with the assumption of constant occupation of surface sites, both theories lead to relations between pH and collector addition having similar mathematical expressions. The equilibrium vapor pressure of zinc has been determined over the systems: ZnS(s) + Fe(s) = FeS(s) + Zn (vapor) and ZnS(s) + 2Cu(s) = Cu2S(s) + Zn (vapor) by reacting the components in an evacuated tube containing a thin copper fiber, and allowing equilibrium to be established with respect to the brass formed and the zinc in the vapor phase. The composition of the brass formed was determined and equilibrium vapor pressure values obtained from existing data. Between 850' and 1000°C, values for the first reaction ranged from 8 to 58 mm Hg; for the second reaction from 1.8 to 22 mm Hg. THE direct reduction of metallic sulphides may be indicated by an equation of the form MS + X = XS + M [1] where X is some suitable reducing agent. In the case where M is a metal of relatively high volatility, the use of vacuum will displace the equilibrium to the right at comparatively low temperatures in the face of the usually unfavorable thermochemistry. For this technique to be feasible, MS, X, and XS, must of course be nonvolatile compared to M. In this regard, zinc becomes an obvious metal both from the point of view of its volatility and the fact that most commercial ore deposits of this metal occur as the sulphide, and its direct reduction would avoid the expensive roasting process necessary prior to present day reduction methods. Two reducing agents are of interest, namely copper and iron, with the former having the added attraction of being relatively easily regenerated by oxidation in the copper converter. The possibility of these reactions has been considered before. Imbert1 patented a process whereby zinc sulphide was reduced by either copper or iron. The process as described took place at atmospheric pressure and, at the high temperatures required, the system was molten, resulting in the formation of a matte with the consequent reduction in the activities of the reactants. Peterson2 did further experimental work on these reactions and, although promising results were obtained on a small scale, attempts to increase the size of the furnace led to excessive "blue powder" formation. The early workers failed to realize the large reduction in temperature afforded by the use of vacuum and its desirable results. More recently, the direct reduction of zinc sulphide by iron has been the subject of a thermody-namic investigation by Kelley,3 and Gross and War-rington' have studied the kinetics of the reaction in the temperature range 900" to 1000°C, their experiments being conducted using vacuum and indicating that the reaction would proceed practically to completion in 1 to 3 hr, depending on the temperature. A qualitative examination of the system ZnS-Cu carried out at this University indicated that 98 pct of the theoretical zinc in the charge could be recovered in 1 hr at 1000°C when operating under reduced pressure. The purpose of this research program was to study the equilibrium of the two reactions. During the investigation, reference to the experimental work of Schenk5 was found but, due to lack of detail in the report, it was felt that it would be desirable to continue the equilibrium measurements. Selection of Method The measurement of vapor pressure of metals presents obvious problems resulting from the high temperatures which must be employed. Sin embargo, la aplicación de este método en los minados de vetas de plata en las minas de Julcani de la Compañía de Minas Buenaventura, resultó de gran aporte. En ese sentido, el presente trabajo describe el proceso técnico de este método de explotación en esta producción de plata, asi como señala los beneficios económicos para la pequeña y mediana minería.

During the mineral processing of pyrites sulphide ores of some deposits of Russia loss of gold with tailings and pyrite concentrates amounts up to 40%~90%. The problem of selective allocation of gold-bearing pyrite is crucial. There are 4 mineralogy-technological groups of pyrite determined in copper-zinc sulphide ores, based on the increase of contents of gold in pyrite. The gold associated with group 4 pyrite contents of 85% the total mass of gold found in the pyrite. The flotation behaviour of the enriched fractions of pyrite (98%), of the allocated from the ore of Gay deposit, were studied essentially in various conditions ?? and the charge of Butyl xanthogenate of potassium (ButX). Some products of selective pyrite flotation were investigated by methods of scanning electronic microscopy, energy-dispersive and X-ray spectral microanalyses, definition of specific resistance and thermoelectric moving force.

Building tunnels means dealing with what rock is encountered. Relocation of the site of the underground structure is rarely possible. Tunneling engineers and miners have to cope with the quality of the rock mass as it is. Different tunneling philosophies and different rock classification methods have been developed in various countries. Most of the rock classification methods are based on the response of the rock mass to the excavation. Tunnel support requirements could be assessed analytically, supplemented by rock mass classification predictions, and verified by measurements during construction. Rock mass classifications on their own should only be used for preliminary, planning purposes and not for final tunnel support. Design of blast pattern in tunneling projects in Korea is also for the most part prepared according to the general rock classification methods such as RMR or Q. It, however, does not take into account the blast performance, and as a consequence, produce poor blasting results. In this paper, the methods of general rock classification and blast design for tunnel excavation in Korea are reviewed, and efforts to develop a new classification method, reflecting the blasting performance, are presented. The Mining Law of 1910 , with amendments of 1914 and 1928 , is at present in force in the Dominican Republic . The first and basic mining law of the Republic was passed in 1876 , and although numerous changes and amendments have been made from time to time , the new laws and amendments thereto have not changed the original or basic law materially . However , these enactments have materially changed the legal methods governing the exploitation of the mineral resources of this country and have added new regulations and requirements to those concerning certain specific minerals , etc. The original or basic law still exists as it was first promulgated to protect the rights of the Dominican Republic itself , the rights of the landowner , and the rights of prospectors in general . Cliffs views the process as extending from mine planning to cargo loading including auxiliary systems such as material handling and plant utilities. Process automation is recognized as an area that can provide significant improvement opportunities with less capital requirement than major flowsheet modifications. This paper discusses the development and results of a strategy to allow and promote implementation of process automation improvements at individual mines based on their economic priorities taking advantage of common systems and concepts for use at multiple mines where practical. Specific process control upgrade projects a Hibbing Taconite Company and the Empire Mine are reviewed in detail.
