Investors and other stakeholders are increasingly concerned about the quality and quantity of sustainability disclosures as well as the extent to which such disclosures correlate with sustainability practices of mining firms. This is because disclosure policies vary widely across firms in terms of extensiveness, materiality, and disclosed topic. In this paper, we conduct a preliminary examination of the relationship between sustainability performance and disclosure. We use sustainability performance indicators such as water and energy use and the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board’s (SASB’s) standards to evaluate disclosures. Our preliminary results show that some measures of sustainability performance (energy use) are negatively correlated to the amount and quality of disclosures while others (water use) are not. Thus, investors should not judge sustainability performance based solely on the amount and quality of sustainability disclosures. In addition, our results suggest that firm size and ownership as well as institutional membership could impact the strength of correlations between disclosure policy and sustainability performance

This paper will review some of the work conducted in the past at the Dynamic Effects Laboratory to examine the use of stress waves and fracture mechanics in understanding dynamic fracture and fragmentation in blasting applications. Along the way, we will use photoelasticity and high speed photography to better understand the mechanisms of fracture and fragmentation.

Ground characterized by hard boulders embedded in soft matrix represents one of the most challenging conditions for TBMs, as the cutterhead must cope with the non-optimal conditions of cutting hard blocks while simultaneously excavating through soft, soil-like matrix material. Dowden and Robinson (2001) and Hunt and Mazhar (2004) summarize several case histories relating to the problems of advancing a TBM through boulder-laden ground and provide guidance with respect to appropriate site investigations and baselining strategies. Some rock types constituting boulder-laden ground include: ?Sedimentary Rocks?cemented alluvial channel deposits, colluvium/talus, landslide debris, and glacial till. ?Igneous Rocks?agglomerates, lahars, and pyroclastic deposits. ?Metamorphic Rocks?tectonic mélange and cataclastic fault zones. ?Decomposed Rocks?corestone bearing saprolites. Disc cutters are commonly utilized to cut the hardblocks; however, as compared to the understanding of disc cutter behavior in hard continuous rocks, little is known regarding fundamental cutting mechanisms in highly heterogeneous bouldery ground conditions. To advance this understanding, a suite of full scale tests have been performed using a linear cutting machine at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM). This paper summarizes the observed cutting mechanisms and their practical implications for TBM excavations through boulder-laden ground.

The purpose of the present study was to develop and test improved Type V workvests for use on dredge operations. The goal was to design workvests that would be more comfortable to wear, would interfere less with task performance, and would better meet the needs of dredge workers. It was hypothesized that by attaining these goals, the resulting vests would be worn more often and would be kept buckled more of the time than traditional vests. The study involved three major phases. In Phase I, visits were made to dredge operations and a definition of the problem was developed. Problems with current vests were identified and working conditions and tasks surveyed In Phase II, prototype vests were developed and laboratory tests were per-formed to assess comfort and interference. In Phase III, the prototypes were modified and field tested with actual dredge operators and workers.

Systematic practices for protecting crops from frost damage began in the United Metes more then 40 years ago when the Weather Bureau Fruit-Frost Warning Service was organized; however, various practices employed in frost protection are centuries old. Although there are areas where little doubt exists as to whether protection is needed, there are also circumstances where there is some doubt as to the need for frost protection. Many factors influence this, including not only critical temperatures but also the maturity dates of the crops relative to marketing. Critical temperatures for frost damage to trees, plants, blossoms, and fruits very with weather, plant variety and nutrition, and stage of growth. In the case of truck crops, a single night of protection from frost injury might yield big dividends with a variety of sweet corn or tomato that matures early while price is high yet be worth very little with a midseason or late-maturing variety. Consequently, it is the individual grower who must decide whether to use frost-protective measures on the basis of his returns, the quantity and quality of his crop, the marketing situation, the sensitivity of his crops to frost damage, and the frequency of damaging frost in his area.

Lime is of tremendous importance to modern industries. In agriculture it is regarded as essential to the continued fertility of many important regions; in building it is indispensable, and in the many ramifications of the chemical industries it is so necessary and so widely employed that it has been designated "the king of all the bases." Figure 1 shows a general view of a modern lime plant producing more than 500 tons of lime daily. In 1924 the production of lime was reported from nearly every State in the Union and amounted to more than 4,000,000 tons, valued at, nearly $40,000,000. For a production of that magnitude between 8,000,000 and 9,000,000 tons of limestone are required. The many problems involved in winning this great quantity of raw material from the natural rock and preparing it for the kilns have in the past received little attention from any governmental agency. Therefore, in compliance with a request from representatives of the National Lime Association in 1922, the Bureau of Mines began a study of problems in limestone quarrying in an effort to advance more economical methods of operation and the utilization of waste material. Field studies were made at many quarries, and the information thus compiled, besides data already at hand from work in other branches of the stone industries, were disseminated to operators in the form of mimeographed Reports of Investigations, eight of which were issued at intervals during 1922, 1923, and 1924. A questionnaire was appended to each report, and quarry operators were invited to contribute additional information obtained as a result of their actual experience and observation. Operators of lime plants have been cordial in their responses and have supplied the bureau with much valuable information. From the data thus obtained, supplemented by later field studies, the revised reports have been combined to form the major part of this bulletin, which is believed fairly to represent present knowledge on the subject of quarrying limestone for lime manufacture.

In 2005, Solid Energy New Zealand Limited obtained non-notified consent for the disposal of 1Mt of coal ash at the Rotowaro minesite, forming part of a coal supply agreement with the Huntly Power Station. The consenting of major mine site activities has historically required wide consultation and involves notification of the application.   The risk and cost associated with consultation can be significantly reduced via a non-notified process. A non-notified consenting process necessitates environmental effects to be shown to be æless than minorÆ, which requires the combination of robust science and a pragmatic approach to design, assessment of environmental effects, and consenting issues.   Key issues examined included consideration of how to practically operate a significant disposal project within the confines of an operating mine, minimising the costs, civil and geotechnical design and practical issues associated with traditional disposal. Environmental issues specifically related to the coal ash, led to a site specific performance driven approach to management rather than relying on conventional prescriptive approaches. Environmental issues of concern include the leaching of boron and aluminium from ash into groundwater and mine water management systems where both boron and aluminium can occur at elevated levels.   Coal ash exhibits unusual geochemical characteristics reflecting the primary coal composition and the combustion process. The dominant coal type combusted at the Huntly Power Station is derived from Rotowaro and the resulting ash is cementitious and has a high alkalinity. As a result the disposal design is based on the characteristics of the ash itself rather than the material into, or onto which the ash is disposed. Non-notified status was able to be achieved through consideration of these key characteristics of the ash, ensuring that the dimensions of the disposal site and each location was designed to minimise the flow of groundwater through the ash and demonstrating that the physical ash disposal effects are less than minor compared to the consented mining operation.

The summit of L_ihi submarine volcano changed dramatically after seismic activity beneath L_ihi during the month of August 1996. Bathymetric re-surveys of the L_ihi edifice using SeaBeam, Simrad and deep-towed Reson-Focus multibeam systems showed the presence of new north-south striking fissures, normal faults and a new pit crater located at the site of a former 300-meter high volcanic cone. Comparisons between the pre-1996 SeaBeam data and the new bathymetry show a net loss of about 100 million cubic meters of rock volume on the summit. This loss is localized at a new pit crater -- the 300-meter deep by 1,300-meter wide Pele's Pit. Submersible observations with Pisces V show the northern edge of Pele's Pit to be bounded by a normal fault located north of the site of the former Pele's Vents cone that has disappeared into the new pit crater. A new hydrothermal field, the Ikaika Vents, extending from a water depth of 1,311 meters to 1,287 meters has formed at the northeastern edge of the floor of Pele's Pit. Submersible observations of these new Ikaika Vents during September 1996 showed vigorous venting at the site with extensive white-colored bacterial mats hanging off the rock face above the vents. Follow-up mapping and sampling of the vent sites during August 1997 showed vent temperatures of up to 198°C, dense populations of vent shrimps around the vents and a centimeters-thick veneer of fine-grained polymetallic sulfide mineralization along the rock walls above individual vents. The mineralogy of the sulfides shows a barite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, and pyrite composition.

Groundfall accidents have been the leading cause of fatalities in the underground coal mining industry for many years. Statistics from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) indicate that approximately half of the victims of these fatal accidents were in an area where no devices had been installed to support the mine's roof. This report was prepared by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to summarize the opinions of 268 coal miners, 29 rust-line supervisors, and 30 MSHA inspectors concerning why people go under unsupported roof, and how to prevent this behavior. Interviews were conducted at six minesites.

This paper presents part of the outcomes of the drill and blast optimization project carried out at Kisladag Gold Mine in Turkey. Kisladag Gold Mine is the largest gold mine in Turkey with a low-grade, bulk-tonnage, open pit operation that uses heap leaching for gold recovery. After blasting, the ore is fed to a three-stage crushing circuit which prepares crushed ore approximately -10 mm (0.39 in) for heap leaching. Crusher downtime analysis showed that blocky material and insufficient feed are causing significant downtimes with the primary crusher. This was supported by the fragmentation data collected to date. It was decided to initiate a fragmentation project to understand the variation in the run-of-mine (ROM) size with a view to provide a consistent feed to the crushing circuit. The study includes the analyses of the ore strength and structure, image analysis of the fragmentation pictures acquired from blasts, blast auditing and quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) analyses. During this project, over 200 fragmentation pictures were acquired from 47 blasts to optimize ore and waste blasts. Ore strength varies between 30 and 120 MPa and rock quality designation (RQD) ranges between 30 and 100. A site-specific fragmentation model was used to calibrate the fragmentation for blast domains formed. In addition, alternative cases were simulated to achieve blasts designs with consistent ROM fragmentation size distribution. Alternative blast designs that include stemming length and powder factor changes were suggested. Long stemming length, drill cuttings use, free faced blasts, small shot sizes and poor stemming length control were some of the key issues causing coarse fragmentation.

The demand for rare earth elements (REE) is increasing rapidly owing to the emergence of new cleanenergy and defense-related technologies. China’s dominates the world production of REE. In this paper, we review the ore characteristics of four typical REE deposits in China and discuss the conventional beneficiation techniques, including gravity and magnetic separation, flotation, and hydrometallurgical processing of these ores. Some of the latest laboratory findings and industrial applications, as well as the development of novel reagents for REE processing in China are presented. The REE beneficiation technologies developed and employed in China could constitute a good case study for many other emerging projects being explored around the world.

An investigation into the causes of variable sulphur content in blast furnace metal produced at No. 4 blast furnace at the Port Kembla works of Australian Iron and Steel Pty. Ltd. was carried out. Theprogramme included an extended and detailed experimental study of a great number of the operating variables of the furnace, on a cast-bycast or four-hourly basis, over fourteen days.Possible causes of the variation were found in irregular operation due to sinter variability, and it was also clearly shown that slag conditions were most important in controlling sulphur contents of pigiron. Some decrease in sulphur variability was achieved, arising partly from this investigation, and it is hoped to try magnesia additions to modify slag conditions for better desulphurizing.INTRODUCTIONSulphur in pig iron is a problem common to many blast furnace operators throughout the world, but the direct causes and means of overcoming them are functions of the available raw materials, and are hence more particular to each plant and its operating practice. Sulphur in hot metal influences the steel-making operations, the rolling operations and the quality of the finished steel. The main problem associated with high sulphur in steel is "hot shortness", which leads to cracking of ingots and billets in rolling, to poor surface finish and to poor welding properties in the finished steel. Mechanical properties of the nether roof rocks play a substantial role in maintenance of mine openings. On longwall faces too low strength is a cause of rock- falls which bring about delays in face advance, and hazard to the miners, while too high strength may result in over hanging of roof rocks in gobs, sometimes over a large area, initiating dynamic periodical pressures. Hence, efforts have been undertaken to develop methods of caveability evaluation for proper selection of roof control system and of longwall-face supports. DESCRIPTIVE CLASSIFICATIONS One of the basic qualitative criteria for classification of roof types with different caveability is the criterion of geological structure. The 26-stages scale worked out for conditions of Donetz Coalfield. USSR, by E.T. Proyavkin et al.(l) may be an example of that type of classification. This scale is presented graphically in Fig. 1. The first types of roofs according to this scale are easily caving immediately after exposure of a small surface, while the last be- long to the strongest roofs which over-hang in waste and require artificial fracturing. Observations and measurements carried out also in Donetz mines lead W.T. Davidyanc (2) to following classification: Class I - weak and densely bedded rocks very easily caving after each advance of supports. The roof subsidence over a waste edge is: [ ] where: h is roof subsidence, m M is thickness of the seam being mined, m S is width of an opening, m Class II - medium caveability and small main roof movements [ ] Class III - hardly breakable rocks, thicker beds with higher strength: caving by large blocks. After exposure of larger roof surfaces the movements of the main roof strata may affect an opening. [ ] Class IV - very hardly breakable rocks - thick, monolithic sandstones: they cause considerable difficulties in working with caving. [ ] Class V - thin-bedded rocks featured by the capacity of a smooth subsidence without disintegration into loose blocks with keeping contact between the particular blocks in a bed. In this classification mining with full roof caving is recommended for class I-III and only exceptionally for class IV. In many coal fields, qualitative and quantitative observations of roof rocks behavior have been carried out: as a result relations and characteristics found in certain mines are given. As an example, Kizielov Coalfield data in the USSR given by B.S. Vinokur (3) may be mentioned. In working thin pitching seams man- less system of undercutting the seam by means of rope saw is used there. The author separated four classes of roofs and gave, for every class, the empirical relation between the extracted area and the time of roof stability. The size of the stable area of exposed roof for particular classes is as follows: 120 to 150 m2 (1291 to 1614 ft2 ), 170 to 200 m2 (1829 to 2152 ft2), 250 to 280 m2 (2690 to 3013 ft2 ) and 350 to 400 m2 (3766 to 4300 ft ). For Kuznetz coalfield in the USSR the following classification of roofs was developed at the WIMI Institute in Leningrad: Class I - completely unstable: impact strength in- dex of rock f = up to 1.5 - the strip of roof 1.4 to 2.0 m (4.59 to 6.56 it) wide, exposed after shearer's cut holds stable during the time not longer than 5 min. Class II - low stability: f = 1.5 to 2.5 - the strip of roof 1.4 to 2.0 m (4.59 to 6.56 ft) wide and up to 4.0 m (13 it) long, exposed after shearer's cut holds stable during 5 to 20 min. Class III - medium stability: f = 2.51 to 3.5 - the strip of roof 1.4 to 2.0 m (4.59 to 6.56 it) wide and 4.0 to 25 m (13 to 82 ft) long, exposed after shearer's cut holds stable from 20 min. to 2 hours. Class IV - stable: f = 3.51 to 4.5 - the strip of roof 1.4 to 2.0 m (4.59 to 6.56 ft) wide and 25 m (82 it) long exposed after shearer's cut is stable during the time longer than 2 hours. In-1992, the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral investigation of the Anderson Mountain study area, including RARE II area 4-942, in Lemhi County, Idaho. The 7,340-ha study area lies within the Salmon National Forest about one kilometer north of the old mining town of Gibbonsville (pop.: 100). The eastern boundary of the study area is formed by the crest of the Bitterroot Range. The crest also serves as the continental Divide, and as the border between Idaho and Montana. The study area lies within the Gibbonsville Mining District, an important past producer of gold from lode and placer deposits. Since the 1870's, several hundred claims for both types have been located in the study area. Thirty-six current (1992) lode claims and two patented claim groups (one lode and one placer) are wholly or partially in the study area. No placer claims are current. In all, twenty-seven lode and five placer properties in and adjacent to the study area were investigated. Workings on the properties included 2 caved shafts; 36 caved adits; 8 open adits; 120 small pits, cuts, and trenches; and 4 large dozed cuts.

"Abstract: Diaphragm walls are used to provide a stable and watertight confinement for the construction of tunnels, underground railway stations, deep basements and other structures requiring deep excavations. Water seepage and soil loss through the joints have occurred on several occasions, causing extensive damage. This may have been due to uncontrolled concrete flow between the joints, unexpected geologic conditions or just poor workmanship.Different ways of quality assurance are applied on construction sites. Most of them rely on recording parameters of the construction equipment and conventional concrete quality control. In the frame of the EUREKA/ZIM project DiWaQ we have looked at several ways to perform non-destructive quality control. Some methods are to be applied after excavation before concreting (phase 1); others after the wall is completed (phase 2).For phase 1 we have used two different principles for checking the shape of the excavation, especially the joint to existing panels. A mechanical device which can be adapted to the excavating equipment was developed; field tested and validated on test and construction sites. It is described in detail in another paper in the same volume. A sonar-based device with a 10 mm resolution has shown good performance in the lab, but is still under development.For phase 2 different temperature sensors have been lowered into access holes to monitor the hydration heat developed during concrete curing. The same tubes can also be used to perform electromagnetic and ultrasonic crosshole measurements across or along joints to detect flaws. Especially the ultrasonic method has shown promising results on validation specimen at the BAM test site at Horstwalde, but limitations as well. Success substantially depended on the joint type, flaw size and distance of the sensors to the joint."

"The triboelectric charge attributes of feldspar, quartz and wollastonite minerals, after contacting different triboecharging medium made of different materials, were considered. Their charge acquisitions by different size fractions of minerals were monitored and accordingly their energetic work function values were estimated. Moreover the separation behaviours of these minerals through the electric field of a laboratory free falling separator were determined and the effects of some chemical reagents on separation their separation characteristics were studied.Finally an attempt was made to translate the findings from single mineral systems to a complex silicate ore, containing quartz, feldspars, wollastonite and some other silicates. The results show favourable prospect to apply the triboelectric separation technique for beneficiation such a complex raw material."

"Historically, tailings management in a northern climate has involved the deposition of tailings into the Tailings Management Area (TMA) as conventional slurry. This type of system is obviously viable but presents challenges that are difficult to manage as circumstances change over the life of mine. These issues can include:? Increases in mill throughput, and? Life of the TMA for the life of mine.This case study will present how thickened, high-density, non-segregating tailings are used as an alternative to conventional slurry disposal to achieve greater storage capacity and enhanced environmental performance for a gold tailings facility in a northern climate. This paper will focus on how this change in deposition strategy accommodated the increased throughput of the mill and the increased life of mine. Specifically, the paper will discuss the addition and integration of new processes to the exiting mill system to accommodate the tailings management issues. It will highlight the challenges from laboratory testing to pre-feasibility to the engineered design of the thickened tailings system implemented at Musselwhite Mine.BACKGROUNDGoldcorp Canada’s Musselwhite Mine, in Northwestern Ontario (120 km north of Pickle Lake), is an underground gold mining operation that began production in 1997. The current mill throughput is about 4000 tpd (1.4 Mtpa). Gold extraction is based on a CIP process with cyanide destruction.The existing tailings management area (TMA) is located about 2 km southwest of the mill complex. The TMA is contained by high ground to the north and to the west and flanged by a moraine ridge along the south side. A number of dams have been constructed along this ridge. The dams were first built in 1996 and subsequently raised in 2000 and again in 2005. Excess tailings pond water is discharged to a polishing pond then released to the environment via a wetland.The TMA was originally designed to contain 13.7 Mt of tailings under a ponded surface for closure. The water cover was to inhibit adverse long-term environmental effects because the tailings contain pyrrhotite and other sulphide-bearing minerals that are potentially acid generating. The design was modified during Stage 3 Construction in 2005 to expand the storage capacity to 17.3 Mt (Golder, 2005). As of end of 2009, over 16 Mt of tailings had been deposited in the TMA. The slurried tailings were historically deposited at 50% solids."

An overview is given of the matte melting process used for the beneficiation of South African Platinum Group Metal (PGM) ores. Most producers use six-electrode furnaces to melt the concentrate and Pierce Smith converters to oxidize excess iron sulphide from the furnace matte. Concentrates from two reef-types (the so-called Merensky and UG-2 reefs) dominate the feedstock supply. Concentrate from the Merensky reef is low in chromium and do not pose significant melting problems. Concentrates from the UG-2 reef contain much higher levels of chromium, which results in the formation of chromium-rich spinels during melting. This is attributed to the low solubility of chromium in furnace slag under typical operating conditions (an oxygen partial pressure of 10-8-10-9bar at temperatures of 1550°C to 1600°C). During the converting process care is needed to avoid excessively oxidizing conditions, which result in cobalt, nickel and copper losses to the slag. High nickel losses result in the formation ofFe2NiO4(trevorite), which often forms solid solutions with FeCr2O4and Fe3O4. In future, the main challenge in the processing of South African PGM ores will be to cope with ever increasing levels of chromium in the concentrate. A short-term solution to the problem would be to melt the concentrate under slightly reducing conditions to promote the formation of CrO, which is more soluble in the slag than Cr2O3. A longer-term solution to the problem would be to abandon the current matte-smelting process in favour of an alloy-based process, which would offer total flexibility with respect to the amount of chromium that can be tolerated in the feed.
