Texas is a major producer of industrial mineral resources required by the state’s ever-growing population that now exceeds 28 million. Texas typically ranks in the top three states for the value of non-fuel mineral production with a total value of $5.2 billion in 2017, accounting for 6.9% of the total US mineral value. Almost 90% of current Texas industrial mineral value comes from the production of cement, crushed stone, industrial sand, and construction sand and gravel. Construction material consumption is focused in the 25 metropolitan areas of the state with populations of > 100,000 residents. Industrial mineral consumption is dominated by the four most populous regions of the state—Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth, San Antonio-New Braunfels, and Austin-Round Rock—with an aggregate population of more than 18 million. More than 11,000 employees work in Texas mining and processing operations. Texas produces more crushed stone than any other state from more than 200 quarries; a similar number of operations produce sand and gravel. Specialty industrial sand production for use as proppants in hydraulic fracturing for enhanced petroleum production serves as an excellent example of how developments in one industry sector can markedly affect another industry; the production of industrial sand in Texas has markedly increased over the past decade, reaching $1.3 billion in 2014. With Texas’ population projected to reach 50 million by 2050, continuing in-state development and production of industrial minerals will be required to supply its residential, commercial, and industrial users. Favorable geology and economic factors provide opportunities for identification and development of new industrial mineral production sites.

The loss of 11 miners in the 7 August 1994 Moura No.2 Underground Mine Disaster was the catalyst for major change in the way safety was managed in the Australian Mining Industry. The impact was felt across all sectors not just underground coal. It was the catalyst for the overhaul of the regulatory frameworks, moving away from prescription to management systems and risk management. This had a substantial impact on the way not only the industry operated but also on how the regulator functioned. It heralded the introduction of competency-based training across all levels of the mining workforce. Since that time major improvements in safety performance have occurred. However, hiding within the statistics are some disturbing trends. This paper aims to analyse the progress made in the past 30 years and identify the current and emerging issues. Automation is bringing major production and safety benefits, but at the same time other factors such as the reduction in workforce numbers and ever-increasing production pressures are leading to high turnover rates. This in turn causes to a loss of experience and expertise. In addition, and of particular importance, is the recognition of psychosocial wellness on workforce safety. Many of these factors are not unique to the mining industry however they may be exacerbated by the scale of mining, the remoteness of the mines and family unfriendly mining rosters.

There is a growing interest among transportation planners to make more use of the subsurface to preserve the landscape and make transportation more efficient and economical. At the present time, utilization of the underground for transportation facilities is severely restrained by the adverse environmental impact and high construction costs. However, recent studies performed by the United States Department of Transportation indicate that, in spite of such problems, the volume of underground construction has significantly increased during recent years and projections point to continuation of these trends(1). It is estimated that the total volume of transportation tunnel construction will exceed $4 billion in this decade. This level of Investment justifies a significant research program. Due to the common interest in transportation tunnels and to the similarities of problems encountered during their construction, the tunneling research activities of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) are closely coordinated with the programs other agencies of the U. S. Department of Transportation DOT); specifically, the Federal Railroad Administration (PRA) and the Urban mass Transportation Administration (UMTA). The FHWA is responsive to the particular needs of these agencies but will benefit from the research results obtained also. In 1971, the Office of Secretary, DOT, initiated plans for an overall coordination of the DOT, FICA, UMTA, and FHWA tunneling research activities. The objectives of this effort have been to reduce tunneling costs by 30% and to increase the rate of excavation by 200% within 10 years. The Capitol Area East End Complex is currently being constructed under contract with the State of California Department of General Services on two sites adjacent to the grounds of the California State Capitol Building in downtown Sacramento. The complex will consolidate the headquarters of the Departments of Health Services and Education, which currently occupy several facilities located throughout Sacramento. When completed in 2003, the complex will be the largest civic office project in California history, with approximately 1.5 million square feet of office space and housing nearly 6,300 state workers. The total project is being constructed on five separate blocks in downtown Sacramento, Blocks 171 through 174 and 225. Separate design/build contracts were executed for the construction on Blocks 171 through 174 and the construction on Block 225. The scope of this paper is limited to construction on Blocks 171 through 174, which comprise a square, two blocks on a side, bounded by 15th, 17th, L, and N streets, located immediately to the east of Capitol Park and the State Capitol Building, as pictured in the image shown below.

Residual aeolian placers (RAPs) are formed by the wind, by preferential entrainment and removal of small and low-density detritusfrom a pre-existing, typically sedimentary sequence containing heavy minerals. Heavy minerals that are resistant to chemical alteration and either soft and malleable (gold), or extremely hard (diamond, sapphire, ruby, etc), are concentrated as a residual on the wind deflation surface, typically in the interstices between larger resistant clasts. RAPs form preferentially in arid or semi arid areas, where the vegetation is sparse or absent, and where topography and surface gradients are low, but may also form on beaches and in periglacial environments. RAPs consist of a continuous or discontinuous, planar or gently undulating horizon of heavy minerals in a single-clast-thick pavement of resistant pebbles, cobbles, or boulders, which mantles the present topography or palaeo-topography. Extreme wind erosion and surface deflation may condense the full pre-existing sequence into a layer of heavy minerals only. The grade of RAPs is substantially higher than in the precursor deposit, and commonly much higher than those typically found in most other placer types. Aside from their general occurrence as a thin pavement of resistant clasts, the best indicators of residual aeolian gold placers are the presence of wind-eroded stones (ventifacts) on the pavement, and the distinctive and unique shapes of aeolian gold grains themselves. The shape of the gold grains is progressively transformed by sand blasting during placer development, from grains with thickened rims, to toroidal grains on which the rims are æsplitÆ and peened inward toward the grain centre on one or both of the grain sides, to hemispherical or sub-spherical grains that are fully encapsulated by the in-turned rims. Gold that has undergone aeolian shape transformation is difficult to entrain and transport away from the site of aeolian concentration by anything other than mass movement or glacial processes. It is also easily retained by commercial recovery plants of any configuration.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines constructed a full-scale model of a 15-ft-wide coal mine entry to use in combination with finite-element analyses to investigate roof support systems and various types of roof bolts. The objective was to enhance understanding of the fundamental mechanics of the interaction between rock and supports and the relative integrity of bolted mine roof as a function of roof bolt type, length, spacing, and tension, and the basic characteristics of the roof strata. The laboratory test results, when correlated with computer simulations using fmite-element analysis and underground verification tests, should provide a basis for desigillng safer, more cost-effective roof control systems and help to establish guidelines for employing fully grouted resin and mechanically anchored bolting systems. The background for this research, the research approach, the methods and equipment employed, and the results are described in this report.

global mining boom and in-creased demand for iron ore has lead to a resurgence in the mining industry in Minnesota. At the combined 81st Annual Minnesota Section of SME Meeting and 69th Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium, April 15-16 in Duluth, MN, this resurgence was the hot topic as new mining projects were featured in the keynote session. The meeting attracted more than 400 mining industry professionals, including engineers, executives, mining managers and suppliers from around the world. This year?s theme was ?New Ventures in Mining.? The meeting included concurrent technical papers sessions, a keynote session that featured three distinguished speakers and a panel discussion that provided updates on new mining developments in the state. The Minnesota Section of SME technical papers were presented in concurrent sessions, one on mining and one on mineral processing. The mining session included papers on drilling, ore blending, slope stabilization, dust control and operations management. The mineral processing session included papers on plant-control technology, ball mills, pellet strength and fans. Also offered was an SME short course titled ?Simulation based pellet induration optimization.? The Minnesota Section of SME held its annual business meeting during the conference. The 69th Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium technical sessions were held on April 15 and also consisted of concurrent sessions on mining and mineral processing. Mining session topics included logistics management, real-time performance measurement, uses for taconite aggregate and environmental issues. The mineral processing session included papers on ore liberation characteristics, zeta potential studies, induration modeling, fuel optimization and conveyor belts. The combined conference included a tradeshow with more than 80 booth spaces featuring vendors offering products and services to Minnesota?s booming mining industry. More than 900 people, including conference registrants and special invited guests of the vendors, at-tended the tradeshow opening reception. This was the largest trade show in many years ? an indication of the vitality of the mining industry in Minnesota.

"""The north coast of the St. Lawrence River will be the scene of an industrial development during the coming decades"". The facts which underlie this statement are the occurrences of iron and titanium ore, the abundance of hydro-power and the availability of deep-water ports in this region. Havre St-Pierre, Sept-Iles, Port Cartier and Baie Corneau already exist as major ports and urban centers. The huge quartz deposit at Baie Comeau will be a decisive contributing factor in the development of a metallurgical plant in this area. Due to its purity, it lends itself, first of all, to the manufacture of glass of different kinds, being comparable to the quartz sands now used by the plate glass and glass container industries in the Montreal area, Moncton, N.B., Trois-Rivieres and - in the future - at Bécancour, Quebec. However, its high quality will also make it possible to use it as one of the main basic materials for the production of silicon carbide and ferrosilicon, and as a flux in metallurgical processes. It is intended, in this report, to offer conclusive proof of the economical importance of this large quartz deposit by presenting the results of the studies made to date."

As part of the addition of eight new combined cycle generating units at the Florida Power & Light Sanford Plant, 2,129 piles were to be installed. The existing plant elements were supported on driven piles, and the variation in pile lengths during previous work, as well as available subsurface information, indicated a complex stratigraphy. At the request of the owner, the designer/construction manager developed a program to evaluate the use of pressure-grouted displacement piles. A pre-design load test program in areas that represented the apparent extremes in subsurface conditions indicated that the system was feasible; however, the presence of existing features that were to be demolished later precluded the clear delineation of subsurface conditions in advance of construction. A contract was negotiated with the pile installer based on the best estimate of potential pile lengths, with modifications to pile lengths to be set based on additional exploration. A total of 52 cone penetration soundings and five load tests were performed immediately prior to and during pile installation to establish correlations between the CPT data and pile performance. Pile depths were set based on these correlations. Pile installation was completed 6 weeks ahead of schedule and 15 percent under the original budget estimate. This paper documents the evaluation of pressure-grouted displacement piles as an emerging technology, and illustrates the benefits of a close working relationship between the owner, designer, and pile contractor at a site with variable subsurface conditions.

The expansion of the West Point wastewater treatment plant located in Seattle, Washington, will require a permanent tieback retaining wall to enlarge the plant site for the new treatment plant facili­ties. The retaining wall will extend approximately 3,000 feet along the property boundary between the treatment plant and the neighboring Discovery Park. Wall heights will range from 35 to as high as 65 feet. The purpose of the retaining wall is to provide a more uniform grade on the plant site and to resist lateral pressures exerted by the upslope, unstable hillside. During preliminary design of the retaining wall, various wall systems were evaluated based on assumed subsurface soil conditions. Results of preliminary studies indicated that expected subsurface conditions and wall heights made a permanent tieback retaining wall feasible. However, uncertain loads on the wall and the capacity of anchors in the native soils were significant. As a result, a detailed geotechnical program was conducted. The scope of the program included conventional drilling, sampling, analyses, and a field test program to determine site-specific anchor capacities. This paper describes the anchor test program and results.

The principal dirnensions of the chimney were fixed as follows: Height from formation to coping, 328 ft. 8 in.; inside diameter concrete shell, 13 ft. Gin.; inside diameter of the 4~-in. brick lining. 11 ft. (j in. ; shell thickness above flue inlet at a point 39 ft. above formation, 1 ft. 8in.; shell thickness at coping, 6 in. That is, the inside of chimney is cylindrical, wldst the outside is gradually stepped inwards with of 1 in. and less until the shell is 6 in. thick only at the top. With these dimensions in mind, it will be seen that some close thought was necessary to ensure a satisfactory of fonn which could be kept rigid and plumb to a height and at the same time provide safe working conditions for the labourers employed.FOUNDATIONSThe spread base of the chimney is 45 ft. in diameter, and foundations were carried down to a depth of 8 ft. 6 in. below natural surface into good hard clay which was known to be the best foundation obtainable in the vicinity being capable of withstanding, when dry, a load of 3 tons to 4 tons per square foot, whereas dead load is 1A tons per square foot and the maximum load expeeted under the most severe wind condition is 2 tons per square foot to ensure the foundation being kept dry and unaffected by ground water, the site was surrounded by a ring drain at a distance of six feet from edge of concrete foundation and at a minimum depth of one foot below bottom of concrete. Open-jointed pipes were laid in the bottom ofthe drain and graded to a pipe drain with outfall clear of the site.

Three piers of a new river bridge are supported on 1.067 m diameter open-end steel pipe piles. At time of drive, and after pile re-strikes, high-strain dynamic capacity values at plan tip elevations, were as low as 23% of design requirements. Pile lengths were extended 20% to 40% deeper than planned at two piers, driving to rock, impacting both the project cost and schedule. The significant discrepancy between predicted and observed capacity was investigated through a series of coordinated dynamic tests; a full-scale test pile was installed and monitored over 221 days by both dynamic and quasi-static methods. Unusually slow strength gains were observed by dynamic monitoring on all piles installed at the site. CPT soundings were advanced at the test pile and through the pile interior to investigate the soil plug. High-strain dynamic methods were found to have significant limitations in properly assessing the long-term capacity of large-diameter open-end pipe piles during driving and short-term pile re-strikes. As the benefits of large diameter high-capacity open-end pipe piles are numerous, the geotechnical community needs to address appropriate construction monitoring and control of these foundation types to take full advantage of these systems. An improved understanding of the physical effects of pile installation and the impact on soil strength assessment while driving and long term soil strength gain should be developed and incorporated into both design and monitoring procedures to avoid either unsafe or needlessly costly designs.

A mineral survey of the 23,760-acre Abert Rim Wilderness Study Area (OR-1-101) was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1986 at the request of the Bureau of land Management in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area is located in south-central Oregon, 26 mi north-northeast of Lakeview, OR. Federal and Lake County mining records indicate no mining claims, geothermal leases, or oil and gas leases within the study area as of January 1, 1987. No economic concentrations of minerals were found in the study area. The Wilderness Study Area is dominated by Abert Rim, a north-trending Basin and Range fault scarp that parallels the study area's western boundary. Exposed on the scarp is an approximately 2,000-ft-thick volcanic sequence consisting of Oligocene-Miocene basalts, tuffs, and tuffaceous sedimentary rocks.

So many ceramics look the same, but are they?In the past 20 years, there have been significant changes in the materials available, as well as changes to the supply chain, for ceramics used in wear applications in the hard rock mining industry. The biggest change in supply has been from the Chinese market, with many suppliers promoting their products as æstate of the artÆ. Some of them are state of the art, but are they all? There will be some concluding remarks in this respect.There are still some outstanding new developments coming from the more traditional suppliers and these should not be ignored. However, as an end user, how can one be sure that the product received meets the technical specifications of that material?This paper will address some of the questions on how to differentiate between different materials by giving a technical overview of the current (but not exclusive) range of popular ceramics, plus incorporating how these ceramics are used in process plant products by presenting case studies. The presentation will include technical data coupled with micrographs of various ceramics to illustrate just why they are different.It will also be shown that by careful selection of the wear material, it is possible to gain significant benefit when using superior materials in an ore processing plant. The impact of cost of the products, life, process efficiency, and reduced maintenance costs will be considered using cyclone components as an example.The properties (including the microstructures) of the various ceramics will be compared to the application in order to get some understanding of what is considered good or bad.Misra and Finnie (1982) summarised their paper, æA review of Abrasive Wear of MetalsÆ by saying:à it is difficult to give guidelines for selecting materials for abrasive wear resistance. Each application is a different one, and a design engineer has to take into account various other factors such as impact, fatigue and corrosion which are often coupled with abrasive wear. The augered cast-in-place piling technique was used to install deep foundations 20 feet into weathered sandstone. The project involved the upgrading of the Air Quality Control System (AQCS) for a 560 megawatt coal fired power plant located in Stillwater, Minnesota. The site subsurface consisted of 20 feet of overburden overlying weak sandstone. The overburden consisted of sands and gravels with cobbles and boulders, and variable thicknesses of peat. Ground-water at the site was approximately 8 feet deep. Two foot diameter piers were selected to facilitate installation through the cobbles and boulders in the over-burden and to penetrate the sandstone 22 feet. During installation of the first pier, the weak sandstone broke down to sand-sized material that could not be cleaned from the pier hole without the use of slurry to hold the material in suspension. However, the use of slurry would significantly impact both schedule and cost. Since the sandstone could be easily drilled with the pier equipment, it was believed that 2 foot diameter deep foundations could be installed as designed using augered cast-in-place piling techniques. A brief test drilling pro-gram was conducted to evaluate the viability of 2 foot diameter continuous flight augers penetrating 22 feet into the weak sandstone. The test drilling indicated that augered cast-in-place installation techniques should be successful. Following a short delay to mobilize the additional required equipment, construction commenced. Installation of the 2 foot diameter augered cast-in-place piling to a depth of 22 feet into the weak sandstone was successfully performed.

With the aging infrastructure, there is a need to maintain and extend the service life of steel structures in general and steel piles in particular. Steel piles support not only vertical loads but also dynamic horizontal loads in onshore and offshore applications. In order to select the appropriate methods to repair corroded steel piles used in onshore and offshore application, corrosion mechanisms were investigated with the rate of corrosion in various environments. The corrosion rate of steel in soil, water and soil-water interface varied from 2 to 500 µm/year. Based on literature review and analyses, the repair methods can be broadly characterized as protective coating, electro-chemical methods, wrapping and encasement and partial replacement of steel. Also, methods to evaluate the repair materials and the repair configuration have been documented.

"Bubble surface area flux (Sb) is the surface area of bubbles per unit time per unit cross-sectional area of flotation machine. The units are: (m2 bubble surface/s)/(m2 cell) or s -1. For bubbles of mean size db (m), s b = 6-Qg/A db where Qg is the gas rate (m3/s), and A the cell cross-section (m'). This parameter is now receiving wide attention as the possible key machine variable in flotation diagnosis and modelling. The concept is described and the potential use of sb is illustrated by work on flotation columns and mechanical cells. In column flotation of recycled paper, the dependence of ink recovery on s b was the same regardless of size of column or type of sparger. In mechanical cells, it has been established that the rate constant is related to Sb independent of impeller type.The use of s b is limited by the problem of measurement, primarily that of estimating db. A prototype probe designed to estimate db (and hence sb) based on conductivity measurements is described. Exploratory work with the probe in a mechanical cell suggests the promise of making estimation of s b routine.INTRODUCTIONFlotation is the result of interaction among variables associated with the feed particles, chemistry and the machine (flotation cell). Trying to isolate the effects of each aids in process diagnosis and is at the centre of attempts to model flotation. The machine variables that have been investigated include the air flow number, the power number and specific power (Harris, 1976). None have survived as the basis for predicting flotation response perhaps because they did not include directly the properties of the bubble swarm (or dispersion). Recently, Gorain (1 997) explored the relationship between the flotation rate constant and various ""gas dispersion"" parameters notably: superficial air rate (Jg = Qg/A, where Qg is the volumetric gas rate and A is cross-sectional area of cell), bubble size (db), gas holdup (Eg, i.e., the volumetric fraction of a cell occupied by gas) and bubble surface area flux (sb = 6.Jg/db). Of them all, Gorain et al. (1997) conclude that the latter, the surface area flux, correlated best with the flotation rate constant. This concept was adopted from column flotation where it was used to estimate, among other factors, the maximum amount of gas that could be injected (Finch and Dobby), 1990). Let's start by reviewing the concept. Following that some examples of where the concept has been applied will be described to illustrate the current interest and finally we will consider how to measure the surface area flux."

On June 25, 1999, BHP Billiton (BHPB) announced the suspension of operations at the BHP Copper Inc.(BHP) San Manuel copper mine in Pinal County, Arizona. Subsequent to this announcement, BHPB aggressively pursued a number of alternatives for the underground mine and open pit facilities, including continued curtailed operations, sale to a qualified mining operator and closure of the property. After consideration of these various alternatives over a 2.5-year period, BHPB announced final closure of the mine site on January 15, 2002.This paper describes how the BHPB charter and HSEC policy apply during the closure process.

One of the several problems facing society today is that of disposing of its solid waste. Each year this nation spends approximately 4.5 billion dollars to collect, transport and dispose of some 360 million tons of domestic and industrial solid waste. Although considerable sums of time and money have been spent in researching various techniques for solid waste disposal, it is presently agreed that sanitary landfilling represents the most economic and universally adaptable solution to the problem of solid waste disposal. However, regardless of the factors favoring sanitary landfilling as the waste disposal method of choice, it should be recognized as carrying with it a potential for the degradation of ground- and surfacewater resources. Through an interdisciplinary effort regulations were promulgated during 1971 in the State of Iowa to govern sanitary disposal projects. Consistent with a set of rationales developed to preserve environmental quality, these regulations set forth hydrologic and geologic standards designed to protect Iowa's water resources. Minimum requirements have been outlined in the regulations through which the natural favorability of potential landfill sites may be evaluated. Natural favorability is primarily defined in terms of the hydrologic and geologic relationships between a proposed landfill site and those in the locality of the site. The regulations specify that leakage from a landfill to a subcropping aquifer must be less than 0.04 cu ft/day/sq ft at the base of the landfill. This factor is offered to quantify the maximum allowable leakage for all sites in unconsolidated sequences underlain by subcropping bedrock aquifers, Based on groundwater research in Iowa, the assumption is made that 50 feet of till will be sufficient to inhibit the downward flow of liquids from a landfill into bedrock aquifers. This assumes a difference of no greater than 40 feet in hydrostatic head between the water table in the unconsolidated sequence and that in the bedrock aquifer. Owing to the fact that bedrock aquifers in many areas of the state are mantled by less than 50 feet of till the regulations provide for site modification, through engineering, to meet the specified leakage standard, In such instances the leakage factor is evaluated by means of the generalized Darcy's Law Q = PIA where:

Lead, zinc, copper, silver, cadmium and many other heavy metals which are potentially hazardous if released into the environment in wastewater discharges have been of considerable concern to governmental agencies, industry and the general public. In response to this concern, an interdisciplinary research team at the University of Missouri has been funded by the National Science Foundation-RANN program to study trace contaminants associated with the production of lead for the past eight years. Seven modern mines in close proximity to two lead smelters in the forested Ozarks of Southeast Missouri are the largest source of lead in the world and in 1976 alone produced 504,095 short tons of lead, 82% of the United States total production. This new and rapid industrial development in a sparsely populated. rural forest region has offered a unique opportunity for studying the impact of trace metals and for developing improved techniques to control detrimental effects. Research on the wastewater discharges and two methods of biological and recycle control are discussed in this paper. Although the two mine-mill complexes investigated in this study have many similarities, the differences between the two are substantive and warrant separate examination.
