Representative samples of the hydrothermal vein deposits of the bulk complex sulphide ore deposit, 10 km south of Ishiagu, in Ebonyin State, South Eastern part of Nigeria were collected from two small scale mining companies. The samples were mixed and successively crushed in a jaw crusher and cone crusher, and ground in a rod mill. Characterization was carried out with SEM, EDX, XRD, XRF and ICP-OES. Mineralogical analysis revealed the presence of sphalerite, galena, siderite, pyrite, quartz and chalcopyrite. X-ray Diffractometry showed that sphalerite mineral in the ore occurs as sphalerite ferrous with varied percentage of Zn and Fe within the various sizes while chalcopyrite occurs as a chalcopyrite group mineral with chemical formula Cu2MnSnS4. Results of the elemental analysis showed variations in elemental composition within the different sizes.

This study investigated the elution of precious and toxic metals from activated carbon. Gold and mercury are of primary interest, due to their value and environmental impact respectively. A laboratory elution rig was commissioned to simulate industrial Zadra and AARL carbon elution conditions. Mercury was found to elute most effectively in strong caustic cyanide solutions; gold was found to elute most effectively in hot low ionic strength solutions. As cyanide decomposes on contact with activated carbon at high temperatures, optimum elution conditions for gold conflicts with those for mercury?no practical compromise in conditions was found. However, sequential elution allowed reasonable recovery of both metals. Ongoing work is looking at the deportment of other metals under elution conditions.

The mining industry has had three difficult years. Commodity prices have remained low and investor confidence in the industry has been shaken. And even though the Asian economy appears to be improving, it will be some time before this improvement will translate into better commodity price conditions for mining. In addition, increased environmental and social restrictions that have been placed on the industry in developed and developing countries have made mining a more difficult proposition. And, if that is not enough, the global mining industry has found itself in fierce competition with Internet businesses for investor capital. Despite that gloomy picture, more than 10,500 mining industry professionals from about 70 countries gathered in Toronto, Ontario March 5-10, 2000 for the Mining Millennium 2000 conference. This meeting was a joint effort between the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum(CIM) and the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC).The joint meeting also featured two trade exhibitions and more than 150speakers. PDAC’s trade show attracted about 400 exhibitors and an additional 200 in the concurrent Investors’ Exchange. CIM’s exhibition attracted about 600 equipment and service companies.

The coal measures of the South Wales coalfield contain at least 50 horizons at which coal seams are known, to occur. More than 300 samples of coal were collected from these coal measures and this paper outlines thefindings of an investigation of the pattern and distribution of 12 trace elements in South Wales coals. A comparison of trace element contents of the South Wales coals is made with trace element values found elsewhereand an attempt was made to establish the organic affinity of the elements in different seams and in the coalfield 'as a whole. An important function of such an analysis is to determine the order of abundance of trace elements and this was performed for individual seams and for the whole coalfield.The interrelationship of certain elements in some seams is also examined with a view to understanding the effectiveness of such an approach to seam correlation.Ranges of values are quoted together with the mean values of the various elements. Variations of elemental values within a seam section and over the coalfield as a whole are discussed.

Industrial Minerals commodity profiles are continued from May's Annual Review issue. Diatomite G. Coombs, Manville Sales Corp. Growth in US diatomite production continued to lag in 1986. The US Bureau of Mines estimated that 580 kt (640,000 st) were produced last year. This is a 1%0 growth over 1985. The cumulative growth from the 1982 low point is 4.4%. Present production, though, is still only 90% of the high tonnage of 1979. The industry will see increased competitive activity with the start-ups of two new mines and production facilities in California and Oregon. US production has come primarily from Lompoc, CA, Bassalt, Clark Station, and Lovelock, NV, and Quincy, WA. New production, probably with capacities of 45 kt/a (50,000 stpy) each, have started near Burney, CA, and Vale, OR. Eagle Picher's new, full-line filter aid and filler plant at Celatom, Vale, OR, was dedicated in August. The plant uses diatomite from the Celatom mining district in Juntura, OR. Grefco's new filter aid and filler plant near Burney, CA, was ready in July. It produced flux calcined products through a single kiln and can handle both bag and bulk shipments. The operations are in Shata County with the plant and mine at the same site. Manville Specialties Group is moving its Filtration and Minerals Division headquarters and research staffs to Lompoc, CA. The move is intended to strengthen response and performance by locating research, marketing, and production close together. Diatomite is processed in three methods: natural, calcined, and flux calcined. The natural is dried to remove water and is particle size classified. Calcined or straight calcined products have been sintered to modify particle size or permeability. Flux calcination, or flux sintering, has a stronger influence on permeability and also benefits color. The unique structure of diatomite is used in a range of particle sizes from fine paint fillers, to coarser filter aids, to granular aggregates. Dimension stone L. Meade, Geomapping Associates Ltd. 1986 was another good year for dimension stone production. The trend toward using marble, granite, limestone, sandstone, and slate has created an increasing demand. According to US Bureau of Mines 1986 estimates, 1.1 Mt (1.2 million st) of dimension stone, with a value of $173 million, was produced by 200 companies. This is an increase from 1985, where 220 companies produced 1 Mt (1.12 million st) valued at $172 million. The increased production volume and decreased unit value is due to the competition from imports. The net import reliance in 1986 was 68% compared to 62% in 1985. The value of imports was $374 million in 1986 versus $295 million the year before. In an effort to maintain their market share, domestic finishers, particularly in the granite industry, continued to upgrade plants and machinery during 1986. In addition, offshore dollars have financed a number of fabricating facilities in North America that will finish imported rough stock. It is hoped that this increased domestic production capability will capitalize on a devalued US dollar. The trend has been for growth in stone usage and market. This trend is continuing with increased public awareness and desire for natural stone in buildings. The area of greatest market growth is expected to be in residential and interior decorative stone usage. Use of sophisticated, automated equipment has made the cost more affordable. Now lobbies, foyers, and specialty rooms are being clad in stone. Dolomite J. Welshimer, National Lime & Stone Co. About three-quarters of dolomite production is used as construction aggregates and 10% to 20% is sold or used as an industrial mineral. Total limestone and dolomite consumed for chemical and metallurgical purposes is about 136 Mt/a (150 million stpy). Sales of industrial dolomitic products were somewhat stronger in 1986 than levels recorded in the early 1980s. Some of the sales' strength, however, can be attributed to reductions in the number of active mining and processing operations. The industry will probably undergo further consolidation by the end of this decade. This will be due primarily to the continued softening in demand by the steel industry. Dolomitic limestone deposits being mined for raw materials for the steel, glass, and refractory in¬dustries are generally 54% calcium carbonate and 45% magnesium carbonate by weight. Impurities composed of silicon, aluminum, iron, sulfur, and phosphorous, represent less than 1%. The heaviest concentration of high purity, surface mineable dolomite in the US is in northwestern Ohio. Crushed and sized dolomitic limestone is a basic raw material for the iron and steel industry. The steam soak process is the most widely applied and most successful thermal supplemental recovery process in use today. This process, which consists of injection of steam in various quantities into a well that is subsequently used as a producer, can be repeatedly applied to the same well. The treatment, if successful, will increase the production rate of the well for a given period. For this reason, the steam soak process should be considered primarily as an acceleration method rather than as a method for producing oil that could not be recovered by primary means. However, application of this process to reservoirs containing viscous crude may produce oil that otherwise would have zero present value or would be produced at such low rates by primary methods that it would not be profitable. A major necessity for the successful application of the steam soak process is a source of natural energy. This source of energy may exist in one or more of the following forms: expansion of fluids, compaction, gravity drainage. This study was undertaken to determine the effect of gravity drainage on steam soak production and recovery and to develop a method for predicting production rates, ultimate recovery, and heat requirements when applying this process to a reservoir in which the primary driving mechanism is gravity drainage. (For additional discussion of some of the factors that affect recovery of viscous oils by the steam soak process, see Ref. 5.) Model The model developed for analyzing the performance of the steam soak process in gravity drainage reservoirs is a modified form of that developed by Matthews and Lefkovits.1,2 The model used in this study consists of two concentric cylindrical volumes of productive formation with cap and base rock of impermeable material. The inner cylinder, extending from the radius of the wellbore to some predetermined radius, is referred to as the hot zone; and the outer cylinder extending from the exterior boundary of the hot zone to the outer drainage boundary will be referred to as the partially heated zone. Fig. 1 is a schematic cross-section of the model, indicating its thermal properties. Horizontally the reservoir is divided into two regions, the upper region having a high gas saturation and residual liquid saturation, and the lower region containing a high liquid saturation. The boundary between these two regions is referred to as the free surface, which drops and changes shape as fluid is produced from the reservoir. The model was used to analyze the steam soak process by applying the following assumptions: 1. The horizontal formation is composed of one or more homogeneous noninterconnected layers containing incompressible fluids. Each layer is treated separately. 2. The hot zone is heated by the initial soak and is maintained at the steam temperature corresponding to atmospheric pressure by resoaking. 3. THE classical papers on contact metasomatic deposits by Lindgren on the Clifton-Morenci district,' by Barrell on Marysville, Mont.,' and by Gold-schmitt on the Oslo district, Norway,' laid the foundation for understanding of the importance of separating the metamorphic process from the subsequent metasomatic stage. Knopf' made a big step forward by recognizing that sulfide ore minerals are invariably younger than silicates and by further stressing the importance of structural control" in ore finding. Some years later Harrison Schmitt" fought the idea that contact metasomatic deposits are erratic, irregular, bunchy, economically marginal, and of small size, concluding that these descriptions have little factual basis. He emphasized the importance of detail mapping and careful geological study as fundamental requirements for a better understanding of these deposits. This article presents a comparative description of the structural features at the Magistral, Antamina, Morococha, Vilca, Ferrobamba, Katanga (Quibio), Tintaya, and Huarca contact deposits (Fig. 1). Further, it will describe how these structural features controlled the emplacement of the intrusives, their shape, distribution of metamorphic and metasomatic halos, and sulfide deposition in post-skarn structural channelways. Finally, the modifications introduced by a superimposed hydrothermal stage recognized at some localities will be discussed. Primary exploration and careful sampling of recognized structural targets were instrumental in outlining the copper ore potential at the Antamina and Tintaya districts, thus proving the benefits and reward of careful geological examinations in this type of deposit. The Magistral District: This district lies in the Province of Pallasca, Department of Ancash, in northern Peru, at 8o 16' S and 77" 47' W. High to medium grade copper orebodies in garnetite, bordering a quartz monzonite stock, are exposed at the bottom of a glaciated valley in the western slope of the Andes at 4250 m (14,000 ft)* elevation.

Highwall stability is a major consideration in optimising opencast mine geometry. It involves assessing the risk of those slope failures that are large enough to have significant cost, safety and/or operational implications. These risks are then balanced against the value of the resource to arrive at an acceptable slope design. Load-deformation models (commonly referred to as ænumericalÆ models) of slopes provide a powerful tool in this decision-making process since they can be verified well before slope failure occurs. This gives the slope designer increased confidence in reviewing designs during excavation, potentially allowing early revision of pit geometry to either increase or decrease safety margins as appropriate. However, these models are not always adopted as they depend heavily on an appropriate choice of constitutive model and material parameters.   A preliminary load-deformation model of a 170m highwall in Solid Energy North (SEN) OperationsÆ Awaroa 4 opencast coal mine in the Rotowaro Coalfield has been prepared. This uses a strain-dependent constitutive model based on laboratory test results, strength parameters developed by SEN and excavation monitoring data. The laboratory testing has included triaxial compression tests on large-diameter fractured samples to characterise the stress-strain response of the closely-jointed soft rock masses that exist in many parts of the mine. Data from the monitoring of a 25m cut made during excavation of a haul road has been used to refine and verify the constitutive model. The resulting highwall model has predicted highwall crest movements corresponding to the excavation of each bench, for comparison with monitored values. Key model outputs are total horizontal movements of about 0.5m near the highwall crest and shear strains of 0.5-0.7% at the locations of potential bedding-parallel shear planes underlying the highwall. Most of the movement is expected to occur as creep rather than as an immediate response to excavation.

Material handling in open pit mining accounts for about 50% of production costs. The selection and deployment of efficient, safe, and economic loading and haulage systems is thus critical to the production process. The problems of truck and shovel selection and sizing include determination of the optimal number and capacities of haulage and loading units, as well as their allocation and operational strategies. Critical survey and analysis of the literature has shown that deterministic, stochastic, and experimental approaches to these problems result in considerably different outputs. This paper presents a comprehensive simulation framework for the problem of truck and shovel selection and sizing based on the random processes underlying the network-continuous-discrete event nature of the mining operation. The framework builds on previous research in this field and attempts to address limitations of available methodologies in the form of a comprehensive algorithm. To test the validity of the framework a large open pit mine was evaluated. The stochastic processes governing the uncertainties underlying the material loading and haulage input variables were defined and built into the stochastic model. Discrete event simulation was used to simulate the stochastic model. The proposed model resulted in several modifications to the case study.

The Beckman Air Comparison Pycnometer is as accurate as the specific gravity bottle for the determination of the volume of fine powders, or particles, up to 50 c.c. in volume. The determination using the air comparison pycnometer is performed in a much shorter time.A graph of density versus iron content for samples from four different iron ore deposits shows that iron contents can be obtained to within 4 per cent iron. Field geologists should be able to obtain quick and relatively accurate iron contents of ore samples using the air comparison pycnometer at these deposits.INTRODUCTIONA Beckman Model 930 Air Comparison Pycnometer was purchased to decrease the time required for the determination of the volume of stones and powders. The liquid displacement method was used previously and the time required per determination varied from a few minutes for stones to half an hour, or more for fine powders. With the air comparison pycnometer, the determination takes approximately 2 min and can be quickly checked for accuracy by a further determination. Since its inception in 1962, the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre has adopted the view that an effective method of training highly qualified engineers for the mineral industry is the pursuit of postgraduate research programmes conducted in operations, that is, in the mines and processing plants of the industry which the research serves. The paper describes how this is achieved in practice, at little or no cost to the taxpayer, and explores the strengths and weaknesses of this approach in the context of a dual mission for the Centre: 1. The postgraduate training of engineers for the mineral industry. 2. The production of useful R &I) for the mineral industry. Topics discussed include financing, relationships with industry and Government, the maintenance of academic excellence, research style, the marketing of research, and limits to growth.

he Wyalong goldfields were discovered in September, 1893, Messrs. Neeld and Sons, owners of the principal mine, being the pioneer prospectors. During the earliest days of the field the ore was sent to Barmedman, a distance of eighteen miles, for treatment at a battery there. The field rapidly increased in importance, and it was not long before a public battery was established on the spot. After some considerable quantity of ore was treated by this process, it became apparent that battery treatment was quite unsuitable for the richer ores, involving, as it did, considerable loss in the tailings. Recognition of this fact led to the erection, in 1895, of plants by the Wyalong Chlorination and Cyanide Works, owned by Mr. Walter Sully, for treatment by their processes; followed, at a later date, by Messrs. Neeld and Sons Chlorination Works. The Wyalong Chlorination and Cyanide Works, after a delay of twelve months in the erection of their plants, have since catered continuously up to the present time for the requirements of the field.Their plant consists of a No. 3 Gates' rock·breaker, a revolving dryer, a No. 5 Krupp mill, revolving roasting furnace with finishing hearth, two chlorination vats of 20 tons capacity each, "nine cyanide vats of 30 to 100 tons capacity, two Wheeler pans and three chlorine generators. The ores are purchased outright on assay at a fixed scale of charges, and treated by the owner of the works on his own account.

When we are beset with the economic problems the world faces today, we are always inclined to look at the shorter term future. Today I would like to take a long-term view of our industry, project historical demands for our products into the future and discuss opportunities for our members. Perhaps we could firstly look at the long-term demand trends for our metals. If I tend to use non ferrous metals as a basis for my figures it is because this data is more readily available to me. I am sure that most other products of our industry show similar trends.

The work is being done using the Thermo-CalcTM software, and the database is being built up by obtaining good thermodynamic descriptions of all of the possible phases in the system. The database supplied did not cover all of the phases, and these had to be gleaned from literature, or modelled using experimental data. Similarly, not all of the experimental data were known, and where there were gaps or inconsistencies, experiments had to be undertaken. A preliminary version of the database was constructed from assessed thermodynamic data-sets for the binary systems only. The binary descriptions were combined allowing extrapolation into the ternary systems, and experimental phase equilibrium data were compared with calculated results. Very good agreement was obtained for the Pt-Al-Ru and Pt-Cr-Ru systems, which was encouraging and confirmed that the higher-order systems could be calculated from the binary systems with confidence. Since some of the phase models in databases were different, these phases had to be remodelled. However, more work is ongoing for information concerning the ternary phases present in the Al-Cr-Ru, Pt-Al-Ru (two ternary compounds in each) and Pt-Al-Cr (possibly more than three ternary compounds) systems. At later stage of the work, problems with the thermodynamic descriptions of the Cr-Ru and Pt-Cr binary systems were found. A programme of experimental work to overcome these has been devised, and is being undertaken. Keywords: Pt-based alloys, phase diagram calculations.

During August, 1926, with the consent of Mr. Schell, mine manager, the writer conducted a mill test on this company's concentrators. Mr. Schell not only gave him his permission, but rendered all possible assistance. Although it was impossible to take all the samples one could have wished to obtain, yet the salient points of the mill flow-sheet were sampled for a continuous period of eight hours, and from these samples and separate data supplied by the manager, valuable information was collected.THE MINEThis is a true vein-type of mine; the lode formations, striking almost due north-south, cut the large porphyritic intrusion at right angles. There are three distinct veins on this property - parallel, persistent, and dipping at an angle varying between 40° - 50° to the horizontal.The country rock is very sound, and timber, save for the small amount required for ore chutes, is entirely absent from all mine workings.The lode varies from a width of 1 in. to 8 in., but the stopes are carried forward with a minimurn width of about 30 in.The mine is particularly dry for a West Coast property, and conditions underground are very favourable. Pictured on these pages are the seven RMCMI Scholarship Award Winners for the 1992-93 year followed by a brief profile. All winners were present as guests of the Institute at the June convention in Beaver Creek, Colorado to receive recognition at the Institute Awards Luncheon Monday, June 28. 1993. Each state vice president served as the host for the collegiate winner. In addition to receiving a plaque from the Scholarship Chairman, Alan Czarnowsky, each winner receives $750 tuition credit for the coming academic year. As this is a continuing award, the winners from the previous year will receive another $750 for tuition credit in their senior year if they have maintained good academic standing and are recommended by their university. A resident from each of the eight RMCMI member states is selected from among Board approved institutions. Criteria for these awards to be made in the spring annually is (1) That the award be made to a sophomore student and used as tuition during the junior year. (2) That the recipient be both a U.S. citizen and a resident of the member state. (3) That the recipient have good academic standing, be pursing a degree in a mining related field and have an expressed interest in Western coal as a possible career path. The scholarship program includes curricula other than those in the mining departments, but in engineering disciplines, such as geology, mineral processing and metallurgy. Contributions to this worthy project are tax deductible to each individual RMCMI member or his firm. In recent years the interest in rare-earth compounds as refractory materials has exceeded the available literature on the subject. While some basic properties, such as density and melting point, of the more readily available rare-earth compounds have been reported in the literature, relatively few papers can be found that deal comprehensively and primarily with high-temperature refractory properties and applications of rare-earth oxides, carbides, sulfides, and nitrides. Therefore, this bibliography has been pre-pared for the use of the ceramic industry as a guide for locating and utilizing the scattered and frequently fragmentary information available. The term "rare earths", as applied in the literature search for this bibliography, is understood to include the following elements: cerium, dysprosium, erbium, europium, gadolinium, holmium, lanthanum, lutetium, neodymium, praseodymium, samarium, terbium, thorium, thulium, uranium, and ytterbium. (On the periodic chart, these elements appear as numbers 57 through 60, 62 through 71, 90, and 92.) It is emphasized that many of the abstracts included are from papers in which the rare-earth compound or compounds are treated along with several other ceramic materials, are mentioned only secondarily, with primary interest placed on a more commonly used refractory material, or are used as part of a mixture of materials formed experimentally and reported on in the paper. As the better known rare-earth materials, such as the oxides of uranium, thorium, and cerium, appear more frequently in the literature, they also appear more frequently in this collection. Articles abstracted include only information on the basic properties that are of interest to the refractories investigator. References to crystal lattices and related topics are generally excluded from this publication. The temperature 1,500° C. has been set arbitrarily as the lower limit for reported data on thermal properties. However, because of the scarcity of information, some reports are included in which data are limited to those obtained at lower temperatures. Many of the articles abstracted include lists of references that will be of additional assistance in pursuing specific lines of investigation.

Geophysical prospecting was first recognized in Australia as an important aid to mining enterprises in 1927, when, on the suggestion of Sir Herbert Gepp, the "Imperial Geophysical Experimental Survey" was organized. The function of this survey was to carry out investigations on the applicability and efficacy of the most important geophysical methods under Australian conditions. The survey was formed under the joint auspices of the British Empire Marketing Board and Australian Commonwealth Government, and the investigations were carried out in Australia under the leadership of Mr. A. Broughton Edge, B.Sc., A.R.S.M., F.G.S., M.Inst.M.M., during the years 1928 and 1929. A description of the work performed, the apparatus used, the principles of the methods, and the results and conclusions of the survey are included in a report published by the Cambridge University Press in 1931.In 1932 Sir Herbert Gepp became interested in some gold mines in Eastern Victoria, in the Cassilis and Bethanga districts, and realizing that the lodes in these areas would be favorabIe for a geophysical examination, he arranged for a series of tests to be carried out. "Although silicosis has been studied extensively, the mechanism is still not fully understood. Experiments do provide evidence that the actions of unique properties of silica surface on the cell membrane are the starting point of silicotic processes. This paper summarizes literature on chemical properties of silica surface, and the effect of particle size on silica toxicity. This paper also discusses the ways in which silica dusts are thought to interact with the cell membrane, with emphasis on freshness, hydrogen bonding, and free-radical interactions.INTRODUCTIONSilicosis is a debilitating pulmonary disease that afflicts persons (miners, foundry workers, ceramic workers, heavy construction workers, etc.) who chronically inhale silica-containing dusts (Schepers, 1960; Silicosis and Silicate Disease Committee, 1988). Since silica is second only to oxygen in weight percentage of the earth's crust (about 28%) and is found in an enormous diversity of minerals, it is natural that silicosis is one of the major industrial health hazards all over the world. Although silicosis has. been studied extensively, the mechanism by which the dusts exert their toxic actions on cells and the processes by which these actions progress to fibrogenesis are still poorly understood. The biological characteristics of the dusts are largely unknown, although it is suggested that the dust size, shape, surface charge, roughness, surface chemical composition, trace metal content, and crystallinity; dose of silica in the ambient air of the workplace; duration of exposure; genetic variation in exposed subjects; personal respiratory patterns; and presence of any coexisting disease (such as tuberculosis or rheumatoid arthritis) all influence the expression of silicosis (Koskinen et al., 1983; Noweir et al., 1980; Raask and Schilling, 1980; Reiser and Last, 1979; Thorne et al., 1985; Wolff et al., 1981). The actual biochemical mechanisms through which these factors operate are still unclear. However, the experiments do provide evidence that the actions of certain unique properties of silica surface on the cell membrane are the starting point of the silicotic process (Allison et al., 1966; Allison and Harrow, 1971; Bateman et al., 1982; Marks, 1957; Parazzi et al., 1968; Reiser and Last, 1979; Summerton et al., 1977). This article summarizes literature on chemical properties of silica dusts and how silica dusts are thought to interact with the cell membrane, with emphasis on hydrogen bonding and free-radical interactions."

"Due to a drainage problem, the Lanzhou to Chongqing high-speed rail line had been out of service during the 2015 wet season, so a drainage tunnel is to be constructed for the line and required to be accomplished before the 2016 wet season.
