In the mine of this study, cemented hydraulic backfill is placed under the form of a slurry at a percentage of solid by weight varying from 50 to 65 per cent. This slurry settles and cures in the stope. During this process an important amount of water must be drained from the scope. Field observations in the case studied here show that the geometry of the drains system has a significant impact on the drainage of the stopes. The mode of filling produces a backfill showing an evident stratification typical of a sedimentation process. In situ observations on this material show that this stratification translates into a very strong heterogeneity in the physical properties of the cemented backfill. This heterogeneity should affect the hydraulic conductivity of the backfill in the scope. In order to study this aspect, finite element simulations were performed. This paper presents the results of these simulations, where the impact of this stratification on hydraulic conductivity is related to the performance of the backfill drainage system for various geometry. This preliminary study is aimed at providing a better understanding of the role of the drains in the dewatering process of the backfilled stope in the case of this Mine.

The K.M.A. reservoir was discovered to be oil bearing at a depth of 3,719 feet on March 11, 1931. Extensive development, however, was not begun immediately, because the discovery well had a low initial daily oil production, and market conditions for oil were unfavorable. Development of the field progressed slowly for the next 6.5 years. In the latter part of 1937, a wildcat well approximately 2 miles southwest of the discovery well was drilled on a magnetometer high and completed with an initial flowing production of 2,018 barrels of 430 A.P.I.-gravity oil in 12 hours. Rapid development of the southwestern part of the K.M.A. field was begun immediately and continued until over 700 wells were drilled and approximately 12,500 acres proved oil productive. Because of the large size of the entire K.M.A. field, this report is limited in scope to the southwestern part only, and the discussion that follows pertains to this area only. The closing date for production statistics is August 1, 1949. The K.M.A.? structure is a complex anticline having a maximum closure of 250 feet, and the K.M.A. formation is composed of sediments that grade from limestone through sandy lime and limy sand to sandstone with thin streaks of shale. Two "distinct members of the K.M.A. formation, zone I and zone II, are oil productive. Core analyses indicate the average porosity to be 16.5 percent for zone I and 16.1 percent for zone II. A relationship was established from core data, which showed the correlative permeabilities to be 42.1 millidarcys for zone I and 39.5 millidarcys for zone II, whereas the arithmetical averages of the permeabilities were 84 millidarcys for zone I and 216 millidarcys for zone II. Connate-water saturations were 17.5 percent for zone I and 20.0 percent for zone II. The porosity-saturation method, using a thickness-correction factor, was employed to calculate the volume of 168.1 million barrels of stock-tank oil initially in place in the reservoir. Analyses of the reservoir oil indicate that, although the initial reservoir pressure was 1,750 p.s.i., the original reservoir oil was saturated to only 1,300 p.s.i., at which pressure 1 barrel of stock-tank oil contained 525 cubic feet of ea~ in solution.

Two papers dealing with Noranda's milling operations have already been presented. The first1 of these covered the initial metallurgical problems connected with the treatment of the ore, while the second2 described the development of the mill from a 500-ton unit in 1928 to one with a daily capacity of 3000 tons less than six years later. At the time the second paper was written the equipment whirh had been installed to bring the mill capacity up to 3000 tons was being tuned into production and for this reason, though each step had previously been tested by a large-scale pilot operation, it was thought advisable to withhold metallurgical data until any starting-up difficulties had been overcome and anticipated requirements fulfilled. These requirements called for an improvement in gold recovery without any lowering of the previous ratio of concentration, and the pages that follow deal with the methods by which this result was obtained. Determirnation of the proportion of unrecovered gold associated with each of these minerals was therefore of primary importance in developing a suitable method for improving gold recovery. The dependence of ortho kink-band formation on crystal orientation, on temperature, and on the conditions at the ends of a specimen is described. Load-compression curves for crystals that kink are presented. The reversibility of ortho kinking is demonstrated, and motion of kink planes through crystals is shown. Finally, a phenomenological explanation of ortho kink-band formation is given. ORTHO compressive kink bands (Fig. la) were discovered for the case of metals by Orowan,1 and they have been discussed by Jillson2 and in some detail by Hess and Barrett." However, their history in nonmetallic crystals is considerably older. It is not known when they were first observed in mineral crystals, but descriptions of them may be found as early as 1885.* They were sometimes mistaken for twins.6 Mügge seems to have been first to realize their true nature and importance. He reviewed the knowledge of them for a wide variety of crystals: anhydrite, antimonite, kyanite, vivianite, gypsum, mica, graphite, molybdenite, barium bromide, cal-cite, sodium nitrate, and barite. Also, the "twins" observed by Bridgman7 in sapphire crystals resemble kink bands more than twins. The terms ortho and para kink bands have been coined in order to distinguish between two types of kink bands which seem to represent the same geometrical configurations, but which have different origins and sizes. Ortho kink bands are the usual type that form at low loads when zinc crystals are compressed parallel to the basal plane. Para kink bands form at much higher loads in highly deformed crystals. These terms refer to compression phenomena and are not to be confused with analogous tension phenomena such as tensile kink bands and deformation bands. Mügge described the geometry of ortho kink bands quite completely for kyanite crystals, Fig. lc. The geometry observed for cadmium by Orowan1 and for zinc by Hess and Barrett3 is very similar to that described by Mügge. (See Hess and Barrett for a complete discussion.) The first indication of tungsten in the Bishop area was the discovery of scheelite concentrations in a gold placer operation in the ( since named) Tungsten Hills in 1913. After early intermittent production, the deposits of the district were slowly discovered and developed. The Pine Creek mine, located in 1916 and under the direction of Union Carbide Corporation since 1935, became the principal producer in the district. By the end of 1965, the total production of the district had reached 3,450,932 units of WO3, 17,071,242 pounds of molybdenum, and 19,599,110 pounds of copper. The topography of the district is characterized by its extreme relief, ranging in elevation from 13,986 feet to about 4400 feet in the Mount Tom quadrangle. The present topography is the result of the uplift and erosion of the Sierra Nevada and the great subsidence of the Owens Valley with its related deposition and volcanism. The general structure of the pre-Tertiary rocks consists of a series of tightly-folded metasedimentary and metavolcanic rock remnants surrounded by exposed plutons ranging in composition from hornblende gabbro to alaskite. The metasedimentary rocks consist of low- to intermediate-grade metamorphic equivalents of fine-grained sediments deposited during the Paleozoic era in a miogeosynclinal environment. Later volcanics were deposited in a eugeosyncline. The ore bodies in the Bishop district consist of scheelite-bearing tactite formed by the pyrometasomatic replacement* of calcareous sediments along the contact with an acidic granitic intrusive. A number of the metasedimentary remnants have had tungsten deposited along their edges.

The grade control process undertaken at mines aims to maximise the value of the ore (valuable product) mined and fed downstream for processing or sale. The full range of grade control activities includes: reserve estimating, drilling/sampling, assaying, modelling, ore block design, blasting, ore mark out, excavating, stockpiling, processing and reconciling. Over the last 25 years, the grade control process has undergone significant improvements and this is in part due to the developments in grade control blasting. This paper discusses the development and classification of grade control blasting applications in surface mining. A review by the author in 1988 (Little and van Rooyen, 1988) is used as a benchmark for discussing the very significant progress that has been made.Two major technology initiatives have enabled this development. The first was the development of a method for the measurement and analysis of total displacement during the blasting process. Currently, the Blast Movement Monitor (BMM®) is a practical tool that has been used around the world to improve the industry’s understanding of three-dimensional blast movement dynamics. The second technological enabler was the development of electronic detonator systems. The unique aspects of electronic detonating systems are their higher accuracy and that all detonators are activated at time zero (initiation). From a grade control blasting perspective these features and other improvements allow experimentation and, ultimately, more complex, multiobjective blasts to be designed and implemented.This paper reports on a classification and review study undertaken by the author. In all, five selective blasting methods and nine bulk blasting methods are classified and reviewed. Five important observations are made: there is value in classifying the range of grade control blasting strategies, and the blasting objective framework presented is helpful in this regard the range of strategies available to designers is increasing as enabling technology develops, so too do the ambitions of blast designers and the expectations of downstream customersgrade control blasting and Mine to Mill concepts are merging, and this paper caters for this trend using multiple blasting objectiveshaving a technical primary blasting objectives framework, combined with the classification system presented here, should assist practitioners and stakeholders with lateral thinking in regards to future technological innovations, grade control blasting and Mine to Mill initiatives.CITATION:Little, T N, 2015. Research objectives were to determine the reasons for erratic behavior of semisilica horizontal zinc retorts in service; to investigate potential corrective measures including the possible utilization of more refractory materials in the retort body; and to delineate laboratory tests suitable for process control in the manufacture of retorts. Correlation of laboratory test results and data supplied by the cooperating smelters indicated that structural failures due to thermal shock and laminations in the retort body are largely responsible for the erratic behavior of horizontal zinc retorts in service. The most promising modifications made in the retort body and evaluated on a laboratory scale included finer grinding of the plastic clay fraction, substitution of mullite grog for calcined fire clay and grain alumina for silica, plus the use of an organic binder. Lamination-free extrusions having excellent thermal shock resistance were prepared from a mixture composed of 50 percent low-silica Missouri plastic clay through 100 mesh, 25 percent mullite grog through 6 mesh, and 25 percent alumina through 100 mesh. The mix was pugged under 28-inch vacuum with 1 percent ligno sulfonate binder in 12 percent tempering water. Laboratory tests suitable for process control in the manufacture of retorts are described.

The key-note of good writing, as of good manners, is B natural. Sincerity is the first requisite for effective writing. When a man says what he knows or believes, he is likely to be interesting, because each human being possesses an individuality, a point of view, or a range of sympathy that makes him different from his fellows. To say or to write what you do no6 think, for the mere sake of talking or writing, is a verbal exercise that must be performed with extraordinary skill if it is to be attractive. Affectations are rarely attractive, rarely effective. To be natural is to be yourself, not a poseur; to give the reader the best of yourself, instead of re-warming the baked meats of yesterday. Quotations-which are second-hand thoughts-will serve occasionally when the thing you want to say has been said so well by another that it would be waste of energy to try to say it better; but, as a rule, the utterance of the writer himself is more interesting than the quotation, because the writer brings something of himself to bear on the subject, and for the moment is more in touch with the reader than any dear departed author. Therefore, say things as best you can in your own way, neither in borrowed words nor in the phraseology that mimics another. Write as if you were speaking to a person whom you desire to persuade or convince. You will then write better than you speak, because, in the first place, you can be more deliberate, and, secondly, you can revise what you have written. Speaking and writing are similar mental acts, with a difference: the difference between eating food raw and eating it cooked. With the advent of the environmental "green" movement of the 1960s, eventually leading to Earth Day 1970, Congress responded by passage of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), 1970. NEPA gave impetus to a flood of federal acts and laws in the subsequent three decades. Many of those protecting man's environment, health, and well-being also affect mining. For purposes of this chapter, a current mineral law summarization lends itself to a division into two parts: viz., Part I, General Mining Law, and Part II, Enviromining Law. The word enviromining has been coined by the author and is defined and used herein as those federal and state statutes and regulations that were created to provide protection and preservation of man's environment, health, safety, and welfare, and they have particular application to and affect on mining activities. They are listed and treated under Enviromining Laws in Part II. Mining, as a basic industry to provide the essential minerals for mankind's necessities and well-being, truly reflects the mining industry's slogan, "If it can't be grown, it must be mined." Without the basic minerals and rocks won from the earth by mining and mineral processing for their valuable physical properties or chemical constituents, man would soon be forced to revert to the cave-dwelling age. Unfortunately, for man to survive in the "manner of life to which he has become accustomed," he is caught between the demands of cleaning up his deteriorating environment and a continued supply of his basic requirements and amenities for daily living supplied by mining of the earth's minerals. He must have "clean living" at the same time with "good living;" neither is expendable. A very high pricetag accompanies this essential and critical choice which must be paid by society. The United States is internationally recognized as the world leader in environmental matters. Many countries are following suit, principally the other Anglo nations. Because US law is founded and based on English law, on occasion, Anglo-American law is referred to and cited as authority in litigation anywhere in the Anglo-American world of jurisprudence. For this reason, and because mining and the industry is international in nature and operations, some British Commonwealth cases will appear in various topics. If the case is of interest to the reader, further inquiry at a law library may be made through use of the case's style and citation given. "Style" refers to the name of the litigating parties. "Citation" refers to the law publication in which the case and decision may be found, as well as the jurisdiction and court of decision. Citation of cases from the United States and British Commonwealth nations is explained under Case Citation Explanation. Space and time limit exhaustive treatment of subjects and covering all geographic and jurisdictional areas. This chapter is intended as a broad outline and is based on the author's master's thesis at the University of Missouri-Rolla, 1992. This report presents the results of an investigation of hookworm infection in the deep gold mines of the Mother Lode, California. In this investigation 1,440 miners of the Mother Lode have been examined for hookworm infection; 444 miners were found to be infected; and 91 miners have taken the treatment and have gotten rid of the infection. ·Within a short time after this preliminary examination, an industrial strike started, which gradually scattered the miners and made it difficult to institute the treatment of many of those who had been found infected. ·With the completion, however, of the State survey all these will eventually be identified and treated. In 1906 Dr. F. F. Sprague, of Jackson, Cal., and formerly of the Philippine Islands, recognized the prevalence of hookworm infection in the gold mines of California. He treated many cases of the infection and brought the prevalence of the disease to the attention of his colleagues. Following closely this pioneer work of Dr. Sprague was that of Dr. E. E. Endicott, health officer of Amador County. In 1911 Dr. Endicott a related his experience in a paper before the American Medical Association. In 1909, Dr. Herbert Gunn, under the auspices of the California State Board of Health, made an investigation to determine the prevalence of the disease among miners. b He reported on the blood and stool examinations of groups of men from three large mines in Amador County. The high eosmophilia verified by stool examinations in many of the cases, and the demonstration of larvae in soil from the workings led Dr. Gunn to the following conclusions: 1. Hookworm disease is endemic in certain mines of California. 2. From 50 to 80 per cent of those working in these mines are infected. 3. The infection undoubtedly is present in practically all the gold mines of California and in those of Nevada just over the border. vYhen it was definitely determined by the California State Board of Health to make an investigation, in cooperation with the Industrial Accident Commission of the State of California and the Federal Bureau of Mines, as to the prevalence of hookworm infection among the miners of California, the following procedure was planned: (1) To encourage the superintendents of the various mines to cooperate in the campaign; (2) to diagnose fecal specimens from the miners and determine the percentage of infected miners; (3) to reach an agreement with the superintendents that all infected men must be treated; (4) to make reexaminations of all treated men; (5) to issue "hookworm certificates"; and (6) to eventually reexamine all California miners. A visit to several of the mines on the Mother Lode made it evident that the mine operators would cooperate most cordially in this campaign; in fact, several superintendents had already considered the advisability of such an undertaking.

Prior to 1911 the literature on melting brass by electricity consisted entirely-save for some suggestions made in patent literature but not actually worked out-of a few observations by farseeing men ' on the theoretical advantages of melting brass and other nonferrous alloys in electric furnaces. Roeber was the first to see and clearly state the possible advantages of the electric furnace in brass melting. The same factors tha.t make it desirable to manufacture special steels in the electric furnace rather than in crucibles, he declared, apply to brass as well. He pointed out the possibility of using larger melting units, of eliminating crucible cost, of readily controlling the purity of the product. and of nearly eliminating the loss of zinc. "The replacement of the • old crucible process is sure to come," he said; "perhaps it will come in two years, but it will, necessarily, in ten years .... The inevitable advance along this industrial line will have great influence in the metal world and will also provide, in large cities, a new kind of load for the central station." The years 1905 to 1910 may be termed the purely theoretical period of the development of the electric brass furnace, though the Conley furnace was tried out e:xperimenta.lly about 1910 and a few heats were made in an induction furnace. 2 In December, 1911, the American Chemical Society held a symposium on mineral wastes, at which Bassett s discussed the zinc· losses that attend making brass in fuel-fired furnaces.

THIS paper gives a brief summary of the process of manufacture of sterling silver, and some of its more important physical properties, as observed in commercial production of rolled sheet and wire. Although papers have been published by Turner and Smith,1 Rose,2 Sperry3 and Jordan,4 there are few technical data available, and unfortunately the time allowed for the preparation of this paper has not been sufficient to make it as comprehensive as the title might indicate. ANALYSIS OF STERLING SILVER Fine or pure silver is too soft for coinage and the manufacture of articles in which strength and resistance to wear are desired. From the earliest times of which we have record, copper has been the metal generally used to harden silver. Analyses of coins and silver articles from ancient tombs show varying amounts of copper, and old Roman silver objects in the British Museum have approximately the same analysis as our sterling. The first authentic record of the establishment of a standard alloy is during the reign of Henry II in England. During the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, the people in the Eastern Provinces of Germany had a reputation for the standard and purity of their silver coinage, and it is said that Henry II employed some of these Easterlings, as they were called, to improve and standardize the English coinage, which had become debased. At the Lake Superior meeting, September, 1904, Messrs. A. Gibb and R. C. Philp presented a paper entitled " The Constitution of Mattes Produced in Copper-Smelting,"' in which they concluded that ferrous and cuprous sulphides formed the chemical compound, 5 Cu2S, FeS. They arrived at this inference from the observed fact that a matte containing Cu,S, 90.4, and FcS, 9.6 per cent. (or, in round figures, Cu2S, 90, and FeS, 10 per cent.), did not contain any metallic copper, while one with more than 10 per cent. of FeS readily dissolved copper, and with less than this amount retained copper in mechanical suspension. Although they determined the melting-points of five mattes containing from 32.6 to 80.1 per cent. of copper, they did not draw a freezing-point curve, as the necessary apparatus was not available. A microscopical examination of 11 polished samples gave them a grayish-black field of very uniform appearance, except that five of the specimens showed the presence of metallic copper. The object of the present investigation was to supplement the above paper by drawing the freezing-point curve of the ferrous sulphide-cuprous sulphide series, and to see how the constitution could be further revealed by microscopical work. The results obtained lead to conclusions very different from those of Gibb and Philp. While their paper bears the date 1904, it was published only in 1906.2 In the meantime, Bolles3 had presented his paper, " The Concentration of Gold and Silver in Iron-Bottoms." The raw material which formed the basis of the research was a matte containing Fe, 61.68, and Cu, 11.20

IT is the purpose of the present paper, while not excluding chemical considerations, to deal more extensively with some of the physical and mechanical aspects of the blast-furnace process, and to point out its dependence in these respects on well-known laws. The quantity and cost of ore and flux required to make a ton of iron being determined by circumstances over which the furnace-man, under given conditions as to quality and quantity of product, has commonly little control; the principal item of cost, apart from the saving of labor, which he can aspire to reduce, is that of fuel. To determine the limits of possibility in this direction is clearly the first step in d practical inquiry; and this step is represented herewith in Fig. 1, a diagram showing the total useful effect obtained from a pound of fuel under various conditions, and thus permitting direct comparison, under any given conditions, between actual results and the maximum possible results. The following statements will explain the basis upon which this diagram has been constructed. One pound of fuel, containing 90 per cent. of fixed carbon (which represents average conditions), is taken as the unit. The degree of oxidation of the carbon is measured by the ratio of the two oxides of carbon contained in the top-gases. It is necessary to remember that a considerable quantity of carbon is brought in as carbon dioxide by the flux, and to take account of it and of its condition. It is here considered that the carbon dioxide liberated by the limestone does not affect the analysis of the toll-gases, and that the ratio of CO to CO., will remain unchanged by the addition of limestone; enough CO, being reduced by the solution

METAFORA is a simulation model for determination and evaluation of strategies for operating loader/truck systems in mining. A specific version of METAFORA was used to evaluate the haulage system at Solider Mineral's Aitik mine in northern Sweden, one of the largest open pit mines in Europe with a production of about 11.5 Mtpy (about 34000 tpd) of copper are. A production level of 34065 tpd was estimated by simulation runs with METAFORA. Using METAFORA's dispatch rules (Fixed Dispatch, Maximize Trucks, and Maximize Loaders), the truck/shovel system in the Aitik mine was simulated for evaluating alternative dispatch control strategies. The Maximize Trucks rule gave about the same total production (ore + waste) as the Fixed Dispatch rule but a 9% higher ore production. The Maximize Loaders rule gave the lowest production. The marginal truck capacity decreases with increasing number of trucks serving the same loader due to increasing waiting times. In Aitik mine the low crusher capacity results in long dumping times. If the dumping time at the crusher could be halved, the ore production would increase by 14%. The paper indicates that the use of software like METAFORA can result in a substantial reduction of time, effort and cost in shovel/truck system design and evaluation.

The mining industry of the United States has-long been severely criticized because of its high rate of accident occurrence, net only as compared with other major industries-in the United States but also with the mining industries of other countries particularly Europe. Statistics (often not of strictly comparable nature) indicate that the accident-frequency rate in all mining is currently about three times and the accident-severity rate is about seven times as great as the average for general industrial work in the United States. These figures are by no means comforting to humanitarian mining men, irrespective of their status in. the industry, and they constitute a challenge that certainly cannot continue to be ignored much longer. This picture becomes much darker when the above statistics are augmented with data indicating that. on an exposure basis our mines (more particularly our coal mines) have accident rates two, three, or even more times as great as more or less similar types of mines in Europe, particularly England and Wales, Belgium, France, and Germany. However, these foreign accident statistics should be carefully analyzed before we become very mush concerned about them, because they are clot strictly comparable owing to several considerations, not the least of which is the fact that foreign methods of compiling or recording accident statistics often differ materially from ours. Moreover, foreign mining and other conditions axe definitely dissimilar to ours in many if not most phases, and numerous ether factors affect the comparability of foreign mine-accident statistics with ours. Unquestionably it should also be taken into consideration that the accident rate of the 130,000,000 or more constituting the populace of the United. States as a whole is much higher than that of any other major country in the world and is two, throe, or more times the rate of the European countries that have more favorable mine-accident rates than those of the United States. Moreover, it is significant that the mine-accident-severity- rate of British mines is about six times the average accident-severity rate of the major industries of the British Isles, or but little mere, favorable than the comparable figures in the United States, namely, that mining-has an accident-severity rate about seven times that of the average of about 30 of the major industries of this country.

SINCE the Sixth Book has described the iron tools, the vessels and the machines used in mink, this Book will describe the methods of assaying1 ores; because it is desirable to first test them in order that the material mined may be advantageously smelted, or that the dross may be purged away and the metal made pure. Although writers have mentioned such tests, yet none of them have set down the directions for performing them, wherefore it is no wonder that those who come later have written nothing on the subject. By tests of this kind miners can determine with certainty whether ores contain any metal in them or not ; or if it has already been indicated that the ore contains one or more metals, the tests show whether it is much or little ; the miners also ascertain by such tests the method by which the metal can be separated from that part of the ore devoid of it ; and further, by these tests, they determine that part in which there is much metal from that part in which there is little. Unless these tests have been carefully applied before the metals are melted out, the ore cannot be smelted without great loss to the owners, for the parts which do not easily melt in the fire carry the metals off with them or consume them. In the last case, they pass off with the fumes ; in the other case they are mixed with the slag and furnace accretions, and in such event the owners lose the labour which they have spent in preparing the furnaces and the crucibles, and further, it is necessary for them to incur fresh expenditure for fluxes and other things. Metals, when they have been melted out, are usually assayed in order that we may ascertain what pro- portion of silver is in a centumpondium of copper or lead, or what quantity of gold is in one libra of silver ; and, on the other hand, what proportion of copper or lead is contained in a centumpondium of silver, or what quantity of silver is contained in one libra of gold. And from this we can calculate whether it will be worth while to separate the precious metals from the base metals, or not. Further, a test of this kind shows whether coins are good or are debased ; and readily detects silver, if the coiners have mixed more than is lawful with the gold ; or copper, if the coiners have alloyed with the gold or silver more of it than is allowable. I will explain all these methods with the utmost care that I can.
