The paper introduces Intelligent Air Management (IAM) as the core activity of M&I Group of Companies (M&I) for providing a total solution to any air management problems for mining and mineral processing operations implementing a comprehensive systems approach through a world-wide network of strategic alliance partners and in-house engineering team and manufacturing facilities in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. Recommendations for energy-efficient ventilation in a vibration and noise free environment are made with the patented and innovative solutions supported by extensive computational fluid dynamics (CFD) studies. The solution scope extends from an intelligent and integrated exhaust silencer to a complete ventilation sys-tem solution including inlet and outlet control design and ducting for diffusers and silencers.

With the dawning of a new century came the beginning of a new era in the coal industry. Instead of the traditional practice of only buying and selling produced coal in the United States, a coal futures market was established. The New York Mercantile Exchange began trading coal futures in July 2001. But, even in this new era, many of the old is-sues that have beset the coal industry still remain, as was evident in2001. Coal production increased to are cord level during 2001, according to preliminary data from the US Energy Information Administration(EIA). Production in 2001 rose by4% to 1.01 Gt (1.12 billion st), compared with 2000 (Table 1). This barely surpassed the previous record level of 1 Gt (1.11 billion st)set in 1998. Coal consumption remained unchanged. The additional production was used to replenish the depleted stockpiles that had resulted after two years of declining coal production and increasing coal consumption.

Significant advances have been made in the design of centrifugal slurry pumps that are used for pumping high-density viscous and paste slurries. This paper presents the results of a series of centrifugal pump performance tests that were conducted using an FLSmidth 6 x 4 Krebs millMAX centrifugal pump. The pump was fitted with a dry mechanical seal to prevent dilution of the slurry from gland service water, as the theology of the slurry is sensitive to small changes in slurry density. Tests were done using paste kaolin slurry with Bingham yield stress values between 578-1 120 Pa and plastic viscosities between 728 and 1491 mPa.s. The viscous properties of the paste during each pump test were measured using a rotational viscometer. Pump head and efficiency de-rating were measured and compared to the correlations of Walker and Goulas (1984). The test data shows the pump's best-efficiency point (BEP) changes and shifts to the left of the performance curve. The pump efficiency decreases as the slurry yield stress increases. The head de-rating data shows more head de-rating at the low flow rates compared to the high flow rates for the high viscosity slurry, which is in line with the findings of Walker and Goulas (1984). This paper demonstrates that it is possible to pump very viscous, high yield stress slurries with limited head and efficiency de-rating using centrifugal pumps, provided that positive suction conditions are maintained at all times.

"SkimAir®, Outotec’s Flash Flotation unit, is placed in the grinding circuit to float the valuable liberated mineral particles from the circulating load of the grinding process while still relatively coarse. Esperanza copper-gold deposit located near Sierra Gorda, Chile, hosts 535 Mtn ore grading 0.57 % copper, 0.27 g/t gold. A series of laboratory and pilot flotation tests were conducted to find out the flotation performance of different ore types both with and without the Flash Flotation. This data was used in modeling and simulating to find the optimal flow sheet for the highest Au and Cu recoveries with required Cu concentrate grade. Simulations with the HSC Chemistry 6.1 software showed that with the SkimAir® and Flash Cleaning it is possible to achieve the required copper grade of 27% Cu with 5% higher recovery for gold and 2% higher recovery for copper compared to the circuit without the Flash Flotation. The pilot tests with simulations were the back up for the installation of four Outotec SkimAir® SK 2400 Flash Cells in the Esperanza circuit for the processing 95.000 tpd of copper-gold ore.INTRODUCTIONEsperanza copper-gold deposit is located near the town of Sierra Gorda, 2nd Administrative Region in Chile. Gold is carried by native gold and solid solution of copper.Antofagasta Minerals S.A. conducted a series of flotation studies at SGS Minerals Services. The studies included both laboratory and pilot scale work. In the pilot scale study the applicability of the Flash Flotation technology was studied with High-grade Andesite and High-grade Porphyry samples (SGS Mineral Services). The Flash Flotation technology gave significantly higher recovery for gold than the conventional flotation circuit. The recoveries for copper were slightly higher using the conventional flotation."

"Two analysis tools which have been applied to problems in industrial flotation processes are the application of kinetics and detailed mineralogical or liberation data, both on a size-by-size basis. This paper describes practical examples of the application of kineticsto examination of the entrainment recovery mechanism, the retardation of valuable minerals at the commencement of flotation sections and the resolution of problems related to valuable species with reduced rate constants at the end of sections. Examples of the usefulness of size-by-size liberation data for monthly composite samples of products from a concentrator are also described.IntroductionMuch of the published industrial flotation data on the behaviour of minerals in various size fractions have been obtained from specially conducted surveys with a duration of several hours. Such data are very valuable and provide a record of the behaviour of the entire flotation plant or sections during the interval of the survey. Some examples from the literature can be cited Cameron et al. (1971), Lynch et al. (1981), Frew (1982). Less attention has been given to the value of complementary sized data derived from compositing shift or daily inventory samples over an interval of one or several weeks with repetition of the procedure at the completion of each interval. Mineralogical point count data of the size fractions of such samples and data interpretation are rare in the literature.Kinetic data on the behaviour of valuable and gangue minerals in various size fractions have been reported often for flotation banks. In the experience 0 f the writer, there has been a tendency among operating metallurgists to ascribe problems in the flotation process to rate constant values for gangue minerals which were believed to be unsatisfactorily high. Less attention has been paid to the value for the rate constant for the valuable mineral over the length of a particular bank.Examples of the types of data which were mentioned previously have been obtained from the lead-zinc concentrator at Mount Isa Mines Limited. The various types of data have been collected to evaluate their worth in order to provide relevant information for both research and operational aspects of the plant."

East Side Access (ESA) will extend Long Island Rail Road into midtown Manhattan via 11 km of tunnels, a new terminal station and associated rail support facilities. The hard-rock tunneling in Manhattan will traverse under Park Avenue and some of the most historically and commercially significant real estate in the world. The soft-ground tunneling in Queens will traverse beneath Amtrak’s Sunnyside Yard and the Harold Inter locking, the busiest rail interlocking in North America. This paper details ESA’s program-wide geo-instrumentation monitoring system for obtaining, processing and presenting all geotechnical monitoring data. Data streams will be real-time, such as from automated total stations, and manually read, such as from optical survey instruments and handheld data loggers. All data will be input into a web-based Geo-Instrumentation Data Management System, which will be accessible to project stake holders via ESA’s intranet or via the Internet using remote access controls.

The US Bureau of Mines and the Santa Cruz Joint Venture (SCJV) are working on a production-scale, in situ copper recovery project in Arizona. The research is being conducted at the Santa Cruz site, located 11.2 km (7 miles) west of Casa Grande, AZ (Fig. 1). Santa Cruz is a 1.36-Gt (1.5 billion st) porphyry deposit averaging 0.6% Cu, of which 65% is oxidized, concealed beneath post-mineral alluvium at depths of 365-914 m (1500-3000 ft). The Bureau and the SCJV will evaluate in situ mining as a method for extracting copper from this previously unmined deposit. Research objectives of the Santa Cruz project are: - to demonstrate that an in situ research test can be operated in an environmentally acceptable manner ; and * to operate an in situ well pattern long enough to develop information on copper recovery and economic feasibility data. In situ mining of copper from undisturbed deposits has not been attempted commercially. There are several potential advantages with in situ mining: less exposure of miners to hazards, lower pital costs for the mine and plant and lower operating costs. In addition, there are no pits, dumps or tailings, which means less environmental impact.

The Reclamation Program for the Northern Zone of the Indus Plains in West Pakistan involves the construction of 30,000 irrigation wells to serve 20 million acres with an annual pumpage of nearly 40 million acre-ft. Detailed hydrologic studies indicated that mild steel would be satisfactory for casing; however, within two years after construction, about 10% of the wells began to fail due to encrustation and corrosion of the casing. A search to find a noncor-rosive substitute for the steel casing disclosed that only fiberglass-reinforced plastic pipe satisfied all requirements. The results of initial use of fiberglass have been highly satisfactory and have resulted in a lower over-all well cost. Advances in technology pomise further reduction in prices and improvement in performance. The northern zone of the Indus Basin comprises a vast area of essentially level land in West Pakistan which is irrigated by means of a complex system of canals that distribute more water to more land than any other irrigation system in the world. In spite of the development of this extensive irrigation system, production of food and fiber has not met the requirements of the country. The major reasons that crop production has not reached anticipated levels are the lack of adequate irrigation supplies and effective subsurface drainage. As a result, yields per acre are among the lowest in the world for areas where irrigation is practiced, and many thousands of acres of valuable crop land have been removed from production or seriously affected by salinity and waterlogging. To rectify the problems of irrigation supply and drainage the Government of Pakistan has undertaken a program of Salinity Control and Reclamation which is being administered by the Water and Power Development Authority. The Authority retained Tipton and Kalmbach, Inc., of Denver, Colo., as engineers for the program in the northern zone of the Indus Basin. This program consists of the construction of about 30,000 irrigation wells to provide drainage for waterlogged lands and full irrigation supplies, including leaching requirements, for all cultivated lands. Coprecipitation of anionic and cationic polyelectrolytes has been applied to floccula-tion of several mineral systems. Results obtained in a study of the flocculation of kaolinite and hematite suspensions of polycationic and polyanionic electrolytes are presented. Greatly increased settling rates were observed following precipitation of positive and negative polyelectrolytes on the surface of finely divided minerals in aqueous suspension. The ratios of polycationic to polyanionic electrolytes required to produce maximum sedimentation have been shown to correspond closely with the equivalence points obtained by light scattering studies of systems containing the positive and negative polyelectrolytes by themselves. DISPERSION of colloids has been of interest to surface chemists for many years. Flocculation studies have been employed to evaluate the limits of colloid stability. In water suspensions, colloids become unstable and flocculate when the 5 potential, the potential of the kinetic solvation sheath, falls to a value at which van der Waals forces may act to draw the particles together. This may happen through an adjustment of the pH of the suspension or by addition of a salt. Optimum conditions for rapid formation of large flocs are found in the region of minimum < potential. In addition to these well known considerations, colloids in water suspensions are known to be flocculated by certain large organic macromolecules. These polyelectrolytes in some cases minimize the 5 potential and in other instances increase the attractive forces by supplying sites for hydrogen bonding.&apos; Use of organic polyelectrolytes in flocculation of mineral colloids has increased rapidly in recent years. These materials are now recognized as indispensable aids to fluid-solid separations in many extractive metallurgical operations. They have been found to increase both the settling rate in thickeners and the filtration rate of filters. In the elucidation of the characteristics of these organic reagents as floc-culants in this laboratory, it was discovered that interaction of certain polyelectrolytes had a surprisingly good effect on flocculation of mineral colloids. Experimental Procedure: The anionic flocculants used in this study were Lytron 886 and 887, produced by Monsanto Chemical Co. Both reagents are copolymers of vinyl acetate and maleic anhydride. Lime is added to Lytron 886, whereas Lytron 887 is all organic. These reagents possess two carboxyl groups for each acetate group and are therefore anionic in character. The cationic reagents used were the Peter Cooper Co. 1-X and 2-X glues. The structures are not definitely known, but the re- agents are amines and are cationic in character. The glues were prepared in the chrome-alum form. Both types of reagents may be classified as polyelectrolytes in that they are high molecular weight polymers and ionize in water. All data presented are in terms of sedimentation rate, measured in 250-ml glass-stoppered graduated cylinders. With suitable precautions such measurements are fairly reproducible and provide a sensitive means for selecting important parameters such as PH, reagent concentration, and floc size and density. Agitation was standardized with five complete end over end cycles of the suspensions in the stoppered graduated cylinders.

ABSTRACT: Underground hydrocarbons storage is a very specific domain for the designer. He is usually free to adjust the section, shape and layout to cope with the geological and geotechnical conditions. This paper presents a panorama of the geotechnical design of mined underground storage caverns, then lists a number of uncommon features encountered in a storage excavated in Sydney, Australia, the Elgas LPG project that had to face major non-isotropic conditions with numerous local variations, impacting on the achievement of the design profiles. Changes in geotechnical design methodology and practice are examined through this project, now in operation, which will have lasted altogether almost ten years. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Die untertaegige Speicherung von Kohlenwasserstoffen unterliegt in der Planung sehr spezifischen Bedingungen. Der planende Ingenieur hat bei der Dimensionierung und Formgebung der Speicherhohlraeume gewisse Freiheiten, muss jedoch vorgefundene geologische und geotechnische Bedingungen beruecksichtigen. Der vorliegende Beitrag gibt zunaechst einen allgemeinen Ueberblick ueber die geotechnische Planung von bergmaennisch aufgefahrenen Speicherhhohlraeumen. Darueber hinaus werden Besonderheiten betrachtet, mit denen das Elgas LPG-Speicherprojekt in einer bergmaennisch aufgefahrenen Kaverne in Sydney, Australien konfrontiert war. Hierbei ging es um die Beruecksichtigung anisotroper Bedingungen mit zusaetzlichen Heterogenitaeten im Gestein und den daraus erwachsenden Schwierigkeiten, die geplante Hohlraumform zu verwirklichen. Ueber einen Zeitraum von fast 10 Jahren, in denen das jetzt in Betrieb befindliche Projekt unterschiedliche Betriebsphasen durchlaufen hat, wurden verschiedene geotechnische Entwurfsverfahren auf ihre Anwendbarkeit geprueft. The objective of this project was to develop technical data and evaluate performance and utility of leaky feeder communications systems currently used in North American underground mines. The desired information was obtained principally through on-site surveys. Altogether, six of the seven mining companies known to be using leafy feeder communications were visited. This report covers the findings of these surveys. In addition, the report provides a brief background summary of mine communications, a technical discussion of leaky feeder systems, and conclusions and recommendations based on the results of the survey.

This research was part of an effort to investigate means of reestablishing non¬polluted hydrological systems in areas where surface mining directly impacts shallow ground-water resources. Chemically undesirable overburden material was selectively backfilled with the intent that it would be below the future root zone, be above the reestablished aquifer, and would not be leached as a result of deep percolation. After 2 years the buried material remains above the spoil aquifer and below the maximum rooting depth. Unsaturated water flow from the land surface to the buried material occurred during wet climatological periods. No significant leaching of buried material was observed, however. Overburden sample contamination from drill stem joint grease with Pb, Zn, and Cu additives caused substantial error regarding DTPA extractable trace metals. A grease with teflon and talc additives was recommended for use in future sampling programs. DTPA extractable trace elements in overburden material had no statistical relationship to post-mine ground-water quality. Overburden columns leached with water produced leachates comparable to overburden and spoil ground-water trace metal quality. A depositional model described the Rosebud Coal overburden as a fluvial system with distinct units of sand, silt, and clay, with distinct chemical properties. Physical and chemical characteristics of the model were comparable to the in situ geochemical system, a relationship which may aid in locating overburden materials unsuitable for reclamation.

Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) project C25073 was proposed by industry stakeholders seeking a potential solution that improves underground air quality and reduces operational costs associated with technology used to control diesel particulate emissions in the underground coal mining environment.The need to protect workers from diesel particulate matter (DPM) has lead the underground coal mining industry to install disposable filter systems on their vehicles. While the disposable filters are efficient at removing significant amounts of DPM, the following major issues have arisen:- high cost of operations; disposable filters cost $A250–300 each and need to be changed at least once per shift resulting in an estimated cost of up to $A164 M/a, in filters alone, to the NSW underground coal mining industry- improper installation, damaged seals and lack of installing a new filter when the old filter is removed; workers are still being exposed to excessive amounts of DPM.The ACARP project successfully demonstrated significant DPM emissions reduction comparable to the incumbent disposable technology on a proof-of-concept wall-flow diesel particulate filter (DPF) system, as well as satisfactory system robustness when assessed using an industry representative test cycle representing operations of a load haul dump (LHD) vehicle typical of that used by the Australian underground coal industry. It was noted in testing that the technology increased modal NO2 formation, but was compliant over typical operational duty cycles.One of the key benefits with the use of a wall-flow DPF system is its tamper-proof design, mitigating the risk of operating unfiltered diesel plant in poorly ventilated areas. Elimination of the need for continual replacement of disposable filters provides significant operational savings estimated to be up to 80 per cent of the incumbent technology.In addition to the above, the project also delivered a number of significant contributions to the knowledgebase of the Australian and international coal industry with regard to the characterisation of operations and control of emissions.CITATION:Coplin, N, 2017. Blasting causes movement of the rock and can be detrimental to the accurate delineation of the ore and waste regions within the resulting muck pile. The consequences can be ore loss and dilution. However, ore loss and dilution can be minimized and significant increases in profit can be realized if the movement can be accurately measured. Various methods have been used to measure muck pile movement including poly-pipe, chain and sandbags but these have been either inaccurate or impractical. The Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre, JKMRC, has developed an electronic blast movement monitor that provides accurate three-dimensional movement vectors following a production blast. From this information, the ore block boundaries in the blasted bench can be adjusted to compensate for the measured movement and then ore recovery can be optimised. Following initial development of the prototype technology, the JKMRC further developed and demonstrated the system in actual production blasts at an open pit gold mine operated by Placer Dome Inc.

The last decade has witnessed a rapid development and application of slurry and EPB type tunnel boring machines. Both soft ground types are able to excavate tunnels in unstable ground conditions below the water table with positive face support. The most significant component of the excavation process is the cutterhead and tool con-figuration were the excavation and face support meets the geological challenge. The TBM downstream processes cannot take place unless the cutterhead and tools effectively do their job. This paper will review the current state of the art design for both slurry and EPB cutterheads and highlight both common as well as geological specific design features.

The 26th Peruvian Mining Convention (Convención de Ingeneieros de Minas del Perú) was held Sept. 15 through 19, 2003, in Arequipa. The convention was sponsored by the Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers (Instituto de Ingeneiros de Minas del Peru). The Institute has been organizing these events since 1954. They are now held every other year. The conventions spotlight Peru’s mineral resources and have contributed to the tremendous growth of the Peruvian mining industry. This year’s meeting consisted of technical sessions, forums, field trips and social activities. It was held at the Tecsup Institute of Technology of Arequipa. More than 3,000 mining professionals attended. As always, the meeting was well organized, and participants expressed gratitude to the organizing committee for another successful meeting.

1, Introduction Location Kalengwa mine is located in the North Western Province of Zambia, 402 kilometre by unpaved road to the west of Kitwe, which is roughly in the centre of the Zambian Copperbelt, well known as one of the world&apos;s centres of copper mining. Its position is illustrated on the map of Africa in Figure 1 and on the map of Zambia in Figure 2. It is a mine of Roan Consolidated Mines Limited whose other properties, Mufulira, Luanshya, Chambishi and Chibuluma Mines, are all located on the Copperbelt. It is managed by the Chibuluma Division of the company. The rate of production from Kalengwa will vary from 12 000 to 17 000 tonnes of saleable copper a year over the next six years. Kalengwa did not exist as a place until the first prospecting parties and later the mine became established and the early working population was recruited entirely from small villages in the surrounding area as much as thirty miles away. The mining area consists of fourteen mining locations amounting to 3.35 square kilometres and the land may be used for any purpose connected with mining, including housing, wood cutting and other utilities. The whole area is, except for minor undulations, a fairly flat plateau with main rivers running from north to south and flood basins known as "dambos" located in a general east west direction. Vegetation is, with the exception of the grassy dambos, temperate forest with relatively light undergrowth. Game of great variety is prolific, as is the associated tsetse fly.
