Introduction Abandoned mill tailings deposits can be found throughout the northern Black Hills of South Dakota, indicative of mining activities that originated during the great gold rush days of 1875. The Refuse Act of 1899 attempted to regulate the deposit of debris from mines and stamp works. But, in most cases, huge volumes of mine and milling wastes were disposed of in ways no longer considered environmentally acceptable. Restoration of gold mill tailings deposits is a relatively new practice to the Black Hills area. This discussion will present an overview of the environmental setting, environmental problems associated with past tailings disposal practices, practices being implemented to solve these problems, and prospects related to present the future tailings disposal practices. Environmental Setting An understanding of climatic characteristics, geology, surface and ground water hydrology conditions, and the physical and chemical characteristics of selected mill tailings deposits will aid in understanding environmental problems associated with tailings disposal and restoration. "The Brunswick Mine ore requires fine grinding to achieve liberation of minerals. With 25mm slugs as the grinding media in the ball mill, there was a limitation of a P80 of 25 microns on the CuPb regrind circuit. Results from pilot plant testing showed that the separation efficiency could be increased through fine grinding with a P80 of 15 microns.Options considered were the capital expenditure for new fine grinding equipment such as a vertimill or the use of the present ball mill equipment with smaller media. The Wheelabrator Allevard Enterprise (WAE) millpebs product was chosen because it was a smaller media with a distribution of steel pellets between 5 to 12 mm.With millpebs the grinding product was reduced in size from a P80 of 25 microns to a P80 of less than 19 microns. The power draw to achieve the finer grind was 13% lower while the media consumption was 57% higher.The millpebs grinding media was also tested on the zinc regrind mill. The purpose of the trial was to understand what the media consumption and power draw would be with the charge lowered to achieve an equivalent grind as obtained with the slugs. The media consumption was approximately the same and the power draw was reduced by 30%.INTRODUCTIONThe Brunswick Mine ore is a complex Pb-Zn-Cu-Ag sulphide ore with the grain size of the minerals varying from submicron blebs to particles up to several mm in size. The ore is ground progressively finer in stages. The first step of grinding occurs in the SAG mill circuit. The product sizing 80% passing 95 microns is fed to the CuPb prefloat stage (Cormier et al 2002). The tails from the prefloat is then further ground to a P80 of 35 microns for the CuPb rougher flotation. The final liberation for the CuPb circuit takes place in the CuPb regrind circuit. The regrinding mill further liberates the cleaner scavenger concentrate, second cleaner tails and third cleaner tails. The reasoning for the progressive grinding is to achieve fine grinding without having galena over ground due to its high specific gravity that preferentially sends it to the cyclone underflow."

"A new device has been developed to directly measure the bubble loading of particle-bubble aggregates in industrial flotation machines, both mechanical flotation cells as well as flotation column cells. The bubble loading of aggregates allows for in-depth analysis of the operating performance of a flotation machine in terms of both pulp/collection zone and froth zone performance. This paper presents the methodology along with an example showing the excellent reproducibility of the device and an analysis of different operating conditions of the device itself.The device has been used to investigate the froth selectivity of attached particles. Simultaneous measurements were made using a different froth recovery measurement technique in the same flotation cell. A comparison of these techniques shows that in this case, particles are selectively detached from bubbles at or near the pulp-froth interface.INTRODUCTIONA flotation cell can be considered to operate in two distinct phases or zones; namely the pulp or collection phase and the froth phase. The pulp zone is responsible for the formation of hydrophobic particle-bubble aggregates, whilst the froth phase is responsible for the separation of these aggregates from surrounding suspended hydrophobic and hydrophilic particles. Thus, the froth phase is the grade determining phase in flotation. A measurement of the bubble load (the mass of particles attached to air bubbles in units of mass/volume) will enable the analysis of the performance of both the collection zone at creating bubble-particle aggregates and also the froth zone at separating these aggregates from surrounding pulp.A measure of froth zone performance that has been used extensively in flotation research is the Froth Recovery, Rf, of a particular system. Froth recovery is defined as the mass of particles collected in the concentrate launder by true flotation as a fraction of the mass of particles entering the froth phase. The measurement of bubble load allows for this term to be calculated easily, rather than having to go through the laborious task of, for example, changing froth depths to determine this performance criterion (Contini et al., 1988; Vera et al., 1999b; Feteris et al., 1987)."

This paper deals with the influence from blast induced stress waves on the performance of shotcrete support in the Kiirunavaara mine. Time histories of stress waves from blasting were obtained from measurements during production blasts in the mine, followed by failure mapping. A finite element model, consisting of beam and spring elements, was used to calculate the shotcrete response to vibrations from blasting. The modelling approach was similar to that of a building during an earthquake, with accelerations measured in-situ used as loads. The analysis showed that the calculated adhesive stresses exceeded the strength in the interface between rock and shotcrete near to the blasted ring. It also indicated that tensile rock failure did occur. These types of failure will presumably result in ejection of joint defined rock blocks or rock slabs and will require a ductile support, such as fibre reinforced shotcrete. The predicted failure was confirmed by the mapping, which also showed that the zone of failed shotcrete was much larger in areas with plain shotcrete compared to areas with reinforced shotcrete. L’influence de l’onde de pression générée par les sautages à la mine de fer de Kiruna sur la performance du béton projeté est étudiée dans le présent article. Les ondes créées par les sautages ont été enregistrées et les domages résultants ont été cartographiés. La réponse du béton projeté aux vibrations de sautage est étudiée à l’aide d’un modèle d’éléments finis, constitué de poutres et de ressorts. L’approche est similaire à celle d’un immeuble subissant un tremblement de terre, avec les accélérations internes utilisées comme charges. L’analyse montre qu’à proximité des sautages, la contrainte adhésive dépasse la résistance de l’interface roche-béton. L’analyse confirme aussi l’existence de ruptures en tension. Ces types de rupture induisent probablement l’éjection des blocks définis par les structures du massif rocheux et requierent un support ductil, comme du béton projeté renforcé par exemple. Le type de rupture est confirmé par les observations de terrain, qui montrent aussi une extension plus importante des domages lorsque le béton projeté n’est pas renforcé. In diesem Konferenzbeitrag geht es um den Einfluss, der aus einer Sprengung hervorgerufenen Schwingungswellen auf die Ausführung der Spritzbetonverstärkung in dem Kiirunavaara Bergwerk. Die Aufzeichnungen der Schwingungswellen von Sprengungen gemäß einer Fehlerkartierung beziehen sich auf Messungen, die während der Sprengungen durchgeführt wurden. Ein Finite Elemente Modell, bestehend aus Stab- und Federelementen, wurde für die Berechnung der Spritzbetondeformation in Bezug auf die Schwingungen aus Sprengungen angewendet. Die Modellierungsmethode war ähnlich der eines Gebäudes während eines Erdbebens anhand der gemessenen Beschleunigungen vor Ort, die als Lasten benutzt wurden. Die Untersuchung hat gezeigt, dass die berechnete Haftspannung größer war als die Festigkeit in der Verbindung zwischen Gestein und Spritzbeton in der Nähe des Sprengungscentrums. Die Analyse hat gezeigt, dass die Zugfestigkeit des Gesteins versagte. Diese Arten von Versagen werden als Folge der Herausnahme von Gesteinsbrocken oder Gesteinsplatten erklärt und benötigen eine faserverstärkte Spritzbeton. Das vorausgesagte Versagen bestätigte sich beim Kartieren, welches auch zeigte, dass die Zone des versagenden Spritzbetons in Bereichen mit unverstärktem Spritzbeton viel größer war als in Bereichen mit armierten Spritzbeton.

"Darreh-Zerreshk and Ali-Abad are two relatively small porphyry copper-type deposits in Yazd Province in central Iran. They are located within the central Iranian volcano-plutonic belt, formed above the collisional convergent margin of the Iranian lithospheric plate from the late Eocene to the Miocene. This paper discusses the geochemical characteristics of the igneous rocks, and 40Ar/39Ar geochronology of plutons and alteration phases associated with the Darreh-Zerreshk and Ali-Abad deposits. The deposits are spatially associated with igneous complexes that consist of older and barren granites intruded by intermediate-composition granitoids, which are the carriers of Cu mineralization. The granites have relatively high content of Nb, Y, and K, a prominent negative Eu anomaly, and were probably derived from melting of, or contamination of mantle-derived magmas by, continental crust. Porphyritic diorites, quartz monzodiorites, and granodiorites show enrichment in light rare earth and large-ion lithophile elements, depletion in middle rare earth elements, and have no negative Eu anomaly. These intermediate-composition granitoids were derived from melting of the upper mantle or lower crust, and their differentiation was controlled partly by fractionation of hornblende. A pilot K/Ar whole-rock dating study suggests that the pre-ore granites were emplaced in the Oligocene. Dating by the 40Ar/39Ar method of nine samples of secondary biotite and sericitized rocks from drillcore within the mineralized and altered zones in both deposits yielded a well-defined age of ca. 16 Ma. This date is interpreted to be the time of hydrothermal alteration and of porphyry copper type mineralization in this part of Iran."

The properties, characteristics and phase structure of chamotte refractories produced with the usage of mullitecorund chamotte and caoline have been given. The comparison of new refractory C-45 obtained by us and refractory C-43 produced by traditional method has done. The physical-chemical properties of refractories is reviewed. The visual porosity, density and pore characteristics of given refractories was calculated. It is established that C-45 has the less gas permeability then C-45 that gives melting units more stability. The petrographical microstructures of refractories have been done. The main phase structures and their influence on refractories properties have been observed. It is established that refractories with mullitecorund chamotte adition has more advantages then refractories gained by traditional method and can be applied to melting units.

In the past decade several significant intrusion-related gold deposits have been discovered in terranes historically exploited for tin-tungsten mineralization (eg Tintina Gold Province, Yukon and Alaska, Tasman Fold Belt, Australia and the Altaid orogenic collage in central Eurasia). This paper presents new data on the geological and geochemical characteristics of these deposits that links them to magmatic-hydrothermal processes and highlights their implications for exploration. New data from several intrusion-related gold provinces suggest that these deposits are found in areas that contain granodiorite to granite, but with a locally significant mafic component, have Rb/Sr ratios ranging between 0.1 and 1.0, and are moderately reduced (Fe2O3/FeO ~ 0.1 to 0.6) ilmenite series, metaluminous, I-types. The intrusions are distinct from porphyry copper intrusions and tin granites, but are more akin to tungsten granites. Hydrothermal fluid types vary with depth of emplacement in intrusion-related gold deposits and new proton induced X-ray emission (PIXE) data from syn-ore fluid inclusions in shallow and deep deposits provide fascinating insight into the variation in metal content between the different settings consistent with observed deposit metal associations. Exploration for intrusion-related gold deposits in tintungsten terranes should focus on regions that contain both mafic and felsic intrusion that are moderately reduced, metaluminous, I-type granites rather than terranes with dominantly highly fractionated, strongly reduced, peraluminous S-types. Intrusion-related gold systems occur in variety of deposit styles (in part controlled by host rock, proximity to granite, and depth of emplacement) and exploration geologists need to be aware of the variety of target types in and around the intrusive environment, and be able to recognise whether they are exploring a shallow or deep intrusion-related gold setting.

Studies were made in the Bureau of Mines Experimental coal mine to evaluate the effectiveness of a few extinguishing agents and techniques for controlling a fire on a simulated mining machine. The investigation showed that water containing an alkali-metal salt or a surface-active (wetting) agent was more effective than water alone. For close attack, fog applications was the most effective technique studied; high rates of agent application controlled the fire more quickly than low rates. The ability to control the fire increased as the distance of attack decreased. Dry powders controlled the fire when applied by shovel but not when applied airborne by rock-dust distributor or by hand fire extinguishers. Dry alkali-metal salt powders (potassium and sodium bicarbonates and sodium tetraborate) quenched the fire more readily than limestone dust. In each instance the finer powder, the greater its effectiveness. In an open ventilated entry, smoke and hot gases backed against the air currents. An airspeed of 230 feet per minute was required to permit approach to within 10 feet of the fire. At lower airspeeds, approach could be made by extending the brattice across the bottom two-thirds of the entry, by pushing the smoke ahead with water sprays, or by discharging dust from a rock-dust distributor. In a dead-end entry, the fire was approached to within 30 feet by coursing fresh air along an airtight line brattice; however, it was safer, easier, and less time-consuming to attack the fire from a fresh-air base 100 feet away with a solid stream or by high-expansion foam; the latter method was more effective.

A detailed analysis of the geomechanical behaviour in rock cutting with a diamond saw is provided to obtain a better understanding of the mechanisms involved in the process. The energy of elastic deformation (before failure) and plastic deformation (post failure) was determined in uniaxial compression tests as well as the energy consumed per unit volume in the cutting process. The test samples are White and Ruivina marbles from Borba - Vila Viçosa in Portugal. Correlations between total deformation specific energy and cutting specific energy, normal and tangential forces and diamond indentation are analysed, and some conclusions are presented.

All ores have an economic optimum particle size (Wills and Napier-Munn, 2006). This optimum value is often a compromise between the need to achieve adequate liberation for the efficient separation and recovery of valuable minerals and the energy consumed by the crushing and grinding process. It has been recognized for nearly three decades that grinding is the most expensive and least efficient stage in mineral processing (El-shall and Somasundaran, 1984). At that time it was estimated that grinding consumed between 25 and 70% of the total power required in mineral processing. This recognition drove the development of new stirred mill fine grinding technology in the 1990s (Jankovic et.al, 2003; Enderle et. al., 1997; Massey, 2008). These milling technologies have a reduced energy consumption compared to traditional fine grinding using ball mills. In the ?coarser? fine grinding applications this improvement is approximately 30%. The benefits increase to above 50% in ultrafine grinding applications (Lichter and Davey, 2006). Despite these gains, the US Department of Energy reported that an additional energy savings of up to 37% is possible in the minerals industry. They identified continuing research and development and implementing best practices in both grinding and materials handling as the primary avenues for the additional reduction (BCS, 2007).

Steam zone growth as a function of time has been calculated for the case of constant rate steam injection into a preheated reservoir. To simplify the calculation a linear temperature profile has been assumed in the cap and base rock at the start of steam injection. The results indicate that at early times augmentation of steam zone growth due to preheating should be greatest. At longer times the steam zone development becomes close to that calculated with no preheating. INTRODUCTION With the increasing application of thermal recovery processes to recover viscous oil, cyclic steam injection has become important in many large-scale projects. In this process, the cycle of steam injection followed by oil production is repeated a number of times. At the beginning of the second and later cycles, steam is injected into a reservoir that has already been heated but that has lost part of its heat both in produced fluids and by conductive heat loss away from the injection zone. In such a case, the temperature level of the injection zone and the temperature distribution of the surrounding rock will affect the growth of the steam zone developed during the subsequent steam injection. Knowledge of the size of steam zone developed is important in determining the amount of oil displaced and the extent of heating in the reservoir. It is also useful to be able to compute the size of the steam zone for cases where thief zones take most of the injected steam. This paper presents a fairly straightforward method of estimating the steam zone developed in a preheated formation, based on certain simplifying assumptions. Some cases of steam injection into a reservoir at its original temperature have already been considered elsewhere.1-3 Because it is difficult or impossible to obtain an accurate representation of the temperature distribution in the reservoir some time after initial heating has taken place, in this work, a linear temperature profile in the cap and base rock is assumed (Figs. 1A and 1B). "The roaster facility at Barrick Goldstrike Mine treats double-refractory sulfidic/carbonaceous gold ore. Prior to oxidation in the roasters, the ore is ground in two parallel dry grinding circuits utilizing 19’ Ø x 75’ double rotator mills. The design plant throughput was 12,000 dstpd. However, process improvements have significantly increased throughput rates by 25-50%. The current daily throughput record is 20,078 dstpd. Grinding circuit improvements contributing to this success include feed size reduction, ball size optimization, automatic ball charging optimization, and operating strategy changes. In addition to the changes already made, this paper discusses future optimization initiatives including on-stream particle size analysis and “real-time” ore hardness determination techniques.INTRODUCTIONBarrick Goldstrike Mines is located 29 miles Northeast of Carlin, Nevada, USA. Through 2001, the property has produced over 23 million ounces of gold making it one of the premier gold operations in the world.Prior to Barrick’s ownership, the property began producing gold from a small heap leach operation in 1975. The small-scale heap leach production continued through 1986, and in January 1987, Barrick acquired the property. Increased exploration activity by Barrick significantly increased gold reserves. In August 1988, a 4,500 dstpd mill facility was commissioned to treat high grade oxide ore. Also, heap leach operations had significantly expanded. In 1990, the mill was expanded to 6,000 dstpd, and the first autoclave was commissioned to treat refractory sulfide ore. By the end of 1996, the mill and pressure oxidation facility had expanded to 16,000 dstpd and heap leaching had ceased as oxide reserves were exhausted. In 2000, a roaster facility was commissioned to treat double-refractory sulfidic/carbonaceous ore."

Cato Ridge Alloys (CRA) is a joint venture company between Assmang of South Africa, Mizushima Ferro Alloy Company (MZK) and Sumitomo Corporation from Japan. Negotiations for the formation of the company started in 1992 with the joint venture agreement signed on the 19th September 1996. MZK was to supply the technical know how for the production of Medium and Low Carbon FeMn while Assmang was to manage the day to day activities of the company. Sumitomo Corporation was to act as facilitator between Assmang and MZK and, together with Ore and Metal are responsible for the marketing of the refined products. The conceptual design of the plant started in December 1996 and the first charge of molten high carbon ferromanganese metal was charged on the 19th January 1998. Problems experienced during the initial startup period were addressed resulting in substantial operational improvements. A build-up in the stock of fine metal was addressed through the development of a process to remelt the fine metal, the development of a market for fine metal and the upgrading of the crushing and screening plant to reduce the generation of fine metal. The mass yield from High Carbon Ferromanganese to Refined Ferromanganese was increased through the implementation of statistical process control, changes to the blowing patterns and the development of a sampling device for taking samples during the process. Converter refractory consumption was reduced. This was achieved on the converter by improving the cooling of the converters with the installation of cooling fans and cooling fins. The heating schedule of the converters was changed for improved refractory life. Production schedules were modified to allow cooling of the refractory between low carbon erromanganese charges. Additional changes made to improve operations were: ? Changing from mehanite casting trays to metal fines beds. ? Installation of sonic horns in the baghouse to prevent the bridging of dust. ? Improved welding on the lance tips.

When the slope angles of the southern side of the Venetia open pit were required to be flattened by some 20 degrees after an analysis completed by De Beers geotechnical engineering in conjunction with SRK, the additional waste stripping tonnage generated was in the order of some 70 million tons. The potential cost of having to move this tonnage had a significantly negative effect on the Net Present Value of Venetia Mine, challenging the viability of the third pushback and rendering a potential fourth pushback completely uneconomic. This paper details some of the innovation that went into the design and planning process undertaken to virtually negate the instantaneous effect of the flattened slope angles and the associated waste tonnage as well as further improve the NPV of Venetia Mine and bring the fourth pushback back into economic viability. This process has become known as NPV+ and is anon going exercise in waste reduction/deferment and revenue advancement.

This paper discusses the pile foundation of tall buildings in Shenzhen region. For 156 constructed tall buildings exceeding 18 storeys, about 86. 5 per cent of the sum. The two main types of foundation used are the semi?machine?bored/slurry drilled cast?in?situ pile and the excavation pile (hand ?dug caisson). The engineering geologiical condition in Shenzhen was analysed. In general, the bed rock level is not too deep. It belongs to hard rock, but the geologic structure is more complex and the tectonic fissures is plenty. According to experiences of the researches, tests, designs and constructions of pile foundation, we present the basic design principle of pile foundations for tall buildings as follows; (1) pile strength control to select the pile type and to choice the cross sectional dimen­sions, must be in compliance with the strength of the pile. (2) bearing stratum strongly weathered, moderartely weathered and slightly weathered rock may be used as the bearing stratum. (3) bearing pile bored /drilled cast-in-situ pile designed as an end bearing pile. (4) friction pile precast concrete pile, prestressed concrete tubular pile and driven cast-in-situ pile designe as a friction pile. In case, pile design is in compliance with these principles, it may be safe, economical and reasonable.

State-of-the-art seismographs can be employed to assist the blasting engineer in understanding the propagation of vibration waves generated by blasting. Wave traces and frequency plots are used to adjust shot loading and timing, especially around close or near- field structures. Successful close-in blasting vibration monitoring requires careful consideration of the following: Geophone locations Mounting of geophone both on structures and in the ground Differences between ground motion and structural response This presentation will discuss methods used to control and monitor blast-induced ground and structure motions. Case histories are presented to illustrate seismic monitoring used as a tool to control vibrations and guide the blaster in the design process.

This publication covers the work of the Division of Coal Mine Inspection, Bureau of Mines, as performed under provisions of the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act. It presents background information and data since 1952 when the Act became effective and includes up-to-date statistics for the calendar year 1962. During that year, approximately 9,704 coal mines were active in the United States, and the Bureau made 12,810 regular inspections. BACKGROUND The Federal coal-mine inspection program was established to carry out the provisions in Public Law 49, 77th Congress, (H. R. 2082) approved May 7, 1941. This act has since been amended as Title I, Advisory Powers Relating to Health and Safety Conditions in Mines, under Public Law 552, 82d Congress, approved July 16, 1952, which also included Title II, Prevention of Major Disasters in Mines. Public Law 552 is known as the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act.

"IntroductionCemented backfill has been placed underground in slurry form in Inco Limited's Ontario Division mines since the early 196Os. The slurry was traditionally mixed on surface at between 65 and 70 wt% solids* and transported underground via gravity through a borehole-pipeline distribution system. This method of placement, while simple and dependable, has proven to be costly because of the large amounts of transport water involved.A significant quantity of the slimes buildup on mine levels is caused by the backfill water carrying cement and other fine material out of the stopes. The level cleanup and eventual pumping or hoisting of the slimes and water back to surface result in substantial indirect backfilling costs.The cement that remains in the stope is always overhydrated because of the high water cement ratios that exist. As a consequence, high concentrations of Portland cement must be added to the backfill to produce the fill strengths required for the different mining methods.Pouring backfill at these densities also demands extensive fill preparatory work in the stopes to withstand the hydraulic heads created by the slurried fill. This, along with the delays in pouring necessary to allow for water drainage, result in significant losses in productivity.These negative aspects of slurry placed fill has led Inco Limited to investigate several methods of transporting backfill underground via pipeline, at higher densities (i.e. 75 to 95 wt.% solids). Three separate transport methods are presently being experimented with by the Company's Mines Research Department. Each utilizes a different technique or form of flow transport, i.e. concrete pumping technology, high density slurry flow, and pneumatic conveying."

This paper presents the results of numerical modeling of the fractured zone around longwall gateroads. The numerical computations have been based on the results of underground measurements of the fractured zone around longwall gateroads, which were performed for various geological and mining conditions and measured with the use of the endoscopic method with a digital camera. Having results of the underground investigations, trials of duplicating them by the Finite Element Method using software PHASE and the Hoek-Brown failure criterion were performed. In order that the fractured zone predicted by the model-based computations closely simulate that measured underground, some selected parameters in the Hoek-Brown failure criterion were modified based on the earlier determined relations used for prediction of the roof-to-floor convergence in longwall gateroads. As a result, the model-based computations produce results very close to those obtained from the underground measurements. Determination of the fractured-rock zone around the mine roads is of great importance to mining practice, especially in planning and designing supports for longwall gateroads. The influence of the front abutment pressure causes the fractured rock zone around the roads to increase and results in an increase of support load. Moreover, proper determination of the fractured rock zone is one of basic elements in the process of planning roof bolting for mine workings.

Acid producing potential static tests have been undertaken on sample lithologies from New Zealand coal mines, to rank the lithogies into acid producing waste rock and stable non-acid producing waste rock. Results indicated that the main acid producing waste rock in the Waikato coal region are the marine Whaingaroa siltstone and the Glen Massey formations and the main alkaline producing lithologies were the Tauranga group volcanic-derived sediments (A & D) and the Mesozoic basement. Coal ash analysis of 28 samples from 28 mines have also been analysed for reactive S percentage and their base potential has been quantified by the chemical index of alteration (CIA). The results provide mine management in the Waikato Coal region with a classification of problematic and stable waste rock types. XRF and CIA values determined from wash drill cuttings would provide a method of determining waste rock volumes and magnitude of palaeo-weathering underground.
