The Coeur d'Alene district in the panhandle of Idaho is one of the major lead-zinc-silver producing areas in the world. The value of recorded production to date has exceeded $2 billion. Country rock comprises six formations of the fine-grained, highly siliceous, and slightly metamorphosed Precambrian Belt Series. Small stocks of monzonitic rocks and several varieties of dikes intrude the sediments. The district is at the intersection of a north trending major anticlinal uplift and the west northwest-trending Lewis and Clark line of which the Osburn fault is the dominant feature. The district structure is complicated and comprises folds, some of which are overturned, and a complex of faults of diverse ages and directions of movement. Late Cretaceous stocks but are also probably Cretaceous in age. The productive veins are localized within a series of 12 subparallel, straight mineral belts that trend approximately N65°W and that appear to be controlled by deep fractures in the basement rocks. The mineral belts are in two groups, separated by 15 miles of post-mineralization movement on the Osburn fault. Veins and ore shoots are variously disposed within each mineral belt. Many crop out at the surface, but others apex several thousand feet beneath it. Local controls that influence the position of ore shoots within the mineral belts include the brittle character of host rock attitude of bedding relative to the mineralized fracture, and the amount and direction of movement on faults. Depth appears to have had little effect on the occurrence or type of ore. Ore occurs in a series of steeply dipping replacement veins of relatively simple mineralogy. Six periods of mineralization, ranging from Precambrian to Tertiary in age, are recognized. The control of environmental effects, especially blast vibration and airblast, has become a dominating planning criterion for most surface blasting operations. Compliance with existing regulations is generally achieved through constraints in the blast design, or monitoring programs. Commonly, blast vibration and airblast signals are rated and compared by their maximum amplitude and the associated principal frequency. However, this data reduction limits the interpretation of the influence of varying blast design parameters on the vibration and airblast.

Mineral Resource Throughput Management is based on the extraction of the maximum potential value from an ore reserve with the emphasis to generate maximum ROI and ROR (return on reserve). A steel producing company in India implemented MRTM to significantly improve their ROI and ROR. The value chain of this company consists of their own iron ore and coal mines, ore washing plants, sinter plants, steel plants, and sales and marketing division. The target for the mines was to produce at a stable and predictable rate and at specific quality requirements. These requirements were set to improve productivity and ROI of the steel plant. The implementation constituted the alignment of the reserve potential, total production chain, human resources and management culture at the mines with the requirements of the steel plant. Many typical mining practices were challenged and changed. Production targets regarding lump vs. fines ratio, consistent product tons, quality targets such as Fe, Al content and moist, and standard deviation on the quality targets were not achieved. A reverse distribution model with release mechanisms to satisfy the demand were developed and implemented at the mines. A stable and predictable flow of mine product with quality standards well within the required standard deviation targets were achieved. The contribution from the mines to significantly improve the Net Profit, ROI and ROR of the company were reached.

Small scale gold mining operations in Papua New Guinea (PNG) have been observed to use very low flow rates of water in sluice boxes. In a series of laboratory experiments carried out to determine whether this approach was unsatisfactory or not for their situation, indications were obtained that it had some advantages in the recovery of fine gold but at the cost of considerable throughput. The separation mechanisms operating in such a system are analysed.

Grouting is a frequently utilized remedy in the planning and implementation of ground improvement and tunnel rehabilitation practice. The state-of-art grouting application used for Chicago’s McCook Reservoir project offers a unique alternative to the tunneling industry for pre-excavation grouting as well as tunnel rehabilitation, rescue and post-excavation ground improvements. The McCook Reservoir project included a computerized grouting control and data collection system for a precise and highly effective groundwater cutoff in fractured dolomites. By using balanced and stabilized grout mixes, the effective permeability of the rock mass was reduced over two orders of magnitude to less than 0.1 Lugeon by installing a double line grout curtain. The stable grout mix designs allowed high pressure and effective grouting at depths up to 125 m (410 ft).

The target of the current metallurgical industry is to recycle and utilize all their by-products, so as to close the sustainable production loop. Slags are the important wastes and by-products of metallurgical industry, which have been treated, recycled and used worldwide. The present paper summarizes the current status of utilization of the various slags from ferrous and non-ferrous metal production, as well as waste incineration, and recycling of salt fluxes in secondary metal production. In addition, the environmental issues of the metallurgical slags are addressed. The metallurgical oxide slags have stone-like properties and, thus, their major applications are in civil engineering field. The slags should be recycled, modified and processed in a proper way, by taking the environmental impact into consideration. With the treatment of salt slags for melting aluminium scraps, as an example, the recycling and elution properties of the salt slags are discussed. Our research indicates that the viscosity of the salt flux is increased with addition of non-metallic components, that a certain percentage of fines remain in suspension, which determines the viscosity, affecting the settling of heavier materials. High slag viscosity will lead to more fine aluminium metal entrapped in the salt slag (may also be seen as a high temperature slurry), and thus increase the load of salt slag recycling. "Difficulties with the sizing and operation of centrifugal froth pumps are common and the underlying fluid dynamics are complex. Design and selection often relies on previous experience, offering unreliable guidance for novel applications or unexpected problems. The current paper describes a program of extensive laboratory testing on froth handling centrifugal pumps, covering a range of flows, heads, speeds, viscosity, air content and froth stability. Variations in impeller vane design and the effectiveness of an airlock venting apparatus were also examined. The program resulted in a better understanding of centrifugal froth pump dynamics and insight for the troubleshooting of field applications.INTRODUCTION The Challenge of Pumping Froth In pumping mineral processing froth, the handling of large quantities of air within the fluid is often unavoidable. Efforts to reduce the amount of air present at the pump suction, while always recommended for improving pump performance, may have limitations. Some strategies may also carry an economic penalty, such as unwanted process dilution (e.g. due to water spray or injection), or increased capital cost of equipment due to oversized pumps, sumps and/or piping. Froth pumping losses fall into several categories, as described below and represented graphically in Figure 1. • Density effects: Entrained air reduces the pressure created by the centrifugal pump in direct proportion to the reduction in bulk density. This is not a true “loss”, since the head produced by the pump (in meters of froth), may remain unaffected. However, the reduction in pressure often leads to a corresponding increase in pump speed required to drive the system, which itself leads to increased NPSH required by the pump (NPSHR). Furthermore, by adding a gas phase, the overall volumetric flowrate is increased, assuming a fixed quantity of de-aerated liquid being handled. This leads to increased suction velocity which further reduces the NPSH margin by simultaneously increasing pump NPSHR and decreasing system NPSH available at the pump suction (NPSHA). • Viscosity effects: Increased viscosity introduces an additional factor in some froth pumping applications, such as oil sands bitumen froth. Losses result from increased shear stress within the fluid flow, which increase with flowrate. Viscosity also facilitates the formation of airlock by reducing turbulence and allowing individual bubbles to coalesce more easily within the flow stream. Finally, it increases pump NPSHR by increasing local pressure drop in the vicinity of the vane inlet edges. • Airlock effects: Also known as air binding, it occurs when air or gas coalesces within the pump suction or impeller passages and begins to collect there, held by buoyancy forces within the rotating flow field. In essence, the liquid “floats upwards” towards the pump suction against the outward directed centrifugal forces. The airlock acts as a blockage, with corresponding reductions in flow, head and efficiency. NPSHR also increases, due to increased velocity and distorted streamlines in the flow circumventing the blockage."

New detailed mapping, micropalaeont- ology and isotopic dating have been successful in revising the stratigraphy of Woodlark Island. All Middle to Late Miocene intrusives and volcanic rocks have been assigned to the Okiduse Volcanics. In addition, the results demonstrate that the Tabukui beds and Wonai Hill beds (N9, late Early Miocene to earliest Middle Miocene) are a single unit. Similarly, the Nasai and Suloga Limestones are confirmed as a single stratigraphic unit as they yield similar foraminiferal ages (upper Te, Early Miocene), and both occur in the same stratigraphic position unconformably overlying basement Loluai Volcanics. Radiocarbon dating suggests a latest Pleistocene age for the upper Kiriwina Formation. Extensive Quaternary cover and low relief prevents detailed structural airphoto interpretation. In general, the structure is simple with all units on Woodlark dipping to the northwest a_4 exhibiting prominent local block faulting.

The Ministry of Commerce has been carrying out an evaluation of the resources of the Northwest Nelson region. In part this was to revisit the issues covered in the earlier proposal to close part of Northwest Nelson to mining under section 24 of the Mining Act (1971) initiated in 1990. In addition, the option of using GIS to integrate a variety of spatial data sets to aid policy formulation could be tested. The Northwest Nelson assessment would be a useful trial. The subsequent national park proposal provided a major impetus to the project and resulted in the scope of the study being broadened to include all energy and minerals resources.

The furnace was commissioned in 1973 and produces a high-grade sulphide matte containing nickel, copper and cobalt, which is shipped to refineries in Zimbabwe and Norway for further processing. This paper outlines the recent process improvements and plant expansions that have resulted in a capacity increase from 40 000 to 60 000 tons per annum of metal production.

The variation of the spectral emissivity of osmium and ruthenium with temperature can be expressed by the following relations: DURING a study of the sintering characteristics of osmium and ruthenium, discrepancies in the previously accepted melting points of the metals were noted. The melting temperatures had not been measured at the time of the work, but were estimated in the literature as 2700°C for osmium and 2450°C for ruthenium.' A recent investigation by Baird2 has shown the melting temperatures of osmium and ruthenium are 3000" and 2250° C, respectively. In the present work, osmium bars sintered at temperatures as high as 2900° C showed no evidence of melting, whereas ruthenium showed definite evidence of melting at temperatures as low as 2250°C. In view of the apparent discrepancies, the melting temperatures of both metals were determined. The spectral emissivities of both metals were determined as an aid to studies of the sintering characteristics of these metals. MATERIALS AND PROCEDURES The materials used in these studies were metal powders supplied by Englehard Industries, Inc., through the courtesy of The International Nickel Co. Analytical data from three laboratories, although not in complete agreement as to the purity of the material or the major impurity elements, indicated that the maximum impurity levels were 0.5 and 1.0 wt pct in osmium and ruthenium, respectively. The metal powders were pressed to 1/4 by 1/4 by 6-in. bars at 20Tsi using carbon tetrachloride as a lubricant. The pressed bars were presintered 1 hr at 1200°C after heating 1 hr at 400°C. The presintered densities of the several bars of the metals ranged from 65 to 80 pct of ideal density. Specimens were self-resistance heated in a vacuum sintering bell. Temperatures were measured with an L&N, disappearing filament optical pyrometer. True temperatures were read at the base of an 0.30-in.-diam, 0.150-in. deep hole drilled into the center of a presintered bar. Apparent temperatures were read from the surface of the bar adjacent to the hole. MELTING POINT DETERMINATION The melting temperature of the metals was determined as the temperature at which a slight additional increase in current through the specimen resulted in a reduced temperature at the base of the hole. Mining operations have made tremendous strides in improving the safety of blasting as shown by the significant and continual decrease in fatalities and serious injuries. Advances in blasting technology and blasting practices have played a significant role in reducing fatalities and injuries. However, even with the decline of fatalities and injuries blast area security continues to be by far the leading factor in blasting accidents. Even though there continues to be an increase in the use of industrial explosives and blasting agents in the U.S.A., the decline in fatalities and injuries from blasting accidents has persisted.

Mining companies and contractors are looking at Wirtgen Surface Miners to provide flexibility at their operations. Wirtgen Surface Miners have been used in the surface mining industry for over fifteen years. The principle behind the Wirtgen Miner is a rotating drum equipped with tungsten carbide tipped cutting tools that excavates and sizes the material. The drum helix augurs the mined material to the center of the drum where it is loaded onto the primary conveyor belt. From there the material is conveyed to the discharge belt and into a truck bed. The cutting drum is located in the center of the machine, near the center of gravity. This permits the machine to cut hard materials as the entire machine weight is converted into cutting forces. Conventional mining practices are process, equipment, and labor intensive. Furthermore, strict environmental requirements pertaining to noise levels, dust pollution, and blasting, near buildings or urban areas, limit the application of conventional methods. Mining/ Construction contractors are using Wirtgen Miners in various limestone excavation projects, such as highway expansion projects, and new roads in housing developments. Mining companies in the industrial minerals and coal industry are using Wirtgen Miners to load directly onto trucks, eliminating the rehandling process and ultimately, primary crushers.

This Final Report summarizes the results of work accomplished under Contract No. J0215039. It is in an executive overview or executive summary format. The number and description of the various technical reports prepared and submitted is outlined. The essential changes and reasons for the revised program schedule/contract modifications actually enacted in May 1982 are discussed in detail. The evolving mines/deposits list and the accompanying criteria classifications are explained along with the verifications/justifications for adding or deleting specific mines/deposits to the list. Difficulties and problems experienced during the different phases of the project in conjunction with the ensuing remedies are highlighted. The final section of they report is devoted to presenting Davy McKee's suggestions for improvements to future MAS commodity studies. Appendix I is comprised of three of the evolving mines/deposits lists starting with the original RFP list and ending with the final completed list. Appendices II and Ill are tabulated summaries of property data including reserves/resources, assays, production, and operating costs. The figures for the specific mines/deposits are given in "range of values" so as to protect the confidentiality of the individual owners/ operators.

An experimental study has been made of the possible mechanisms for foam stability in the system CaO-SiO2-Cr2O3, where Cr2O3is the foaming agent. The degree of lowering of surface tension by Cr2O3 was determined at 1600 "C for high -silica melts. Measurements were also made of foam stability under standardized conditions. The results of the two sets of measurements then were correlated by applying the Gibbs and Marangoni theories of film elasticity. It was demonstrated that the Marangoni elasticity effect is probably the largest single contributor to foam stability, although the high uiscosity of' silicate melts makes some contribution in controlling the rate of drainage of liquid from bubble lamellae. ThE tendency of metallurgical slags to foam has frequently been observed during steel-refining operations. In the open-hearth furnace,this tendency is considered undesirable because it slows down the rate of heat transfer from the burners to the molten-metal bath. On the other hand, it is sometimes desirable to have a "foamy" slag in the basic oxygen converter.' A more effective blanket over the steel bath is made by a "foamy" slag, and loss in yield of metal due to splashing is minimized. In addition, a flush slag can be removed more easily in this condition. Since slag-foaming problems in the field have been attacked largely on an empirical basis, it appeared desirable to obtain a better basic understanding of the mechanism of foam stability. The experimental work was directed almost entirely toward the behavior of Cr2O3 as the foaming agent in CaO-SiO,-Cr2O3 melts. In the first stage of the investigation, the degree of lowering of surface tension by Cr2O3 was determined at 1600°C. The second stage consisted of measuring foam stabilities under standardized conditions. The two sets of experimental results then were correlated by applying various theories of foam stability. For convenience in interpreting the surface-tension and foam-stability results reported here, a portion of the CaO-SiO2-Cr2O3 phase diagram2 is reproduced in Fig. 1. EXPERIMENTAL 1) Surface-Tension Measurements. Very little information is available in the literature on the lowering of surface tension of slags by foaming agents. Kozakevitch 3 mentioned that the addition of 1.5 pct Cr2O3 lowered the surface tension of FeO slightly. In another system, some data on the lowering of surface tension of foaming slags by P2O5 were reported by Cooper and Kitchener.4 The technique used for the surface-tension measurements was the maximum bubble-pressure method,' using a single tube immersed to various depths in the melt. This method has been used extensively in high-temperature systems, such as in liquid metals, slags, and glasses.6,7 It has the advantage that the contact angle between the liquid and the tube material need not be known. The Bureau de Recherches Geologiques et Minieres (BRGM) (a French Government-sponsored geological and mining agency), through international experience gained over many years, has become very skilled in alluvial prospection, particularly for diamonds. The research laboratories within the BRGM have also been active in creating new mineral processing equipment, some of which is directly applicable to such prospection. One such development, the mobile prospection unit, is described and its application in mineral exploration is demonstrated by a consideration of the diamond search in Australia and the general exploration of the Massif Armoricain (France). Because this latter study was fundamental in the development of the concept of 'mineral-geochemistry', and its application in mineral exploration, it is also briefly described.
