"Laboratory-scale hydrochloric acid leach tests were conducted on an Elliot Lake uranium ore. Hydrochloric acid leaches without an oxidant or with molecular oxygen (i.e., air or pure oxygen gas) as an oxidant favoured uranium and radium extractions. Conditions for maximum uranium, thorium and radium extractions with hydrochloric acid in the presence of sodium chlorate were determined. The highest extractions of uranium (96%), thorium (81%) and radium (91%) were obtained using a mixture of 44.0 kg HCI and 2.5 kg NaCIOJ per tonne of ore at 75°C with 18 hours ' retention.Flowsheets for two-stage leaching are proposed. The residues obtained from the second-stage leach contain uranium (0.002%), thorium (0.006%) and radium (15 to 20 pCi/g). Tailings of this nature are considered suitable for mine backfill, and, if pyrite is removed, suitable for surface disposal.IntroductionThe nuclear energy industry forecasts an increasing demand for uranium. Wardrop Engineering and the Placer Dome?s Campbell Mine Design Team utilized leading edge directional raise boring techniques and an innovative, remote controlled application of steel fibre reinforced shotcrete ground support to achieve improved mine ventilation and a superior, safety focused secondary emergency egress. While more standardized methods may have provided a sufficient solution to either the requirement for a ventilation raise or for a traditional escape ladder way, innovative methodology ensured both objectives were met with a single, enhanced solution. Placer Dome committed to provide a solution that minimized energy consumption, optimized air delivery and facilitated an escape way focused on minimizing the negative physiological aspects associated with mine evacuation. The project was successful in providing a new airway, returning 47 m3/s (100,000 cfm) from the 39 Level to 30 Level, minimizing risk to the raise equipping crew and providing a fully equipped escape hoist. The resulting secure escape environment provided an efficient means of evacuating personnel working at depth without necessitating a potentially dangerous exhausting climb to surface. The project has substantiated, that optimized safety focused design can be achieved without jeopardizing project economics.

If lead buttons are cupelled under closely controlled conditions in a suitable design of furnace, silver losses during cupellation are given by a simple equation. The effect of copper on these silver losses has been studied and a "copper limit" for cupellation has been determined. Scorification and crucible fusion procedures for copper-bearing materials have been designed so that the lead buttons produced will not contain amounts of copper greater than this determined copper limit. Silver losses during these crucible fusion and scorification procedures are given by the distribution law, and can be calculated. Thus, silver can be determined in copper-bearing materials with a satisfactory degree of accuracy provided that the appropriate corrections for losses are applied to the weight of the silver prill produced.

A process was developed to produce electrolytic manganese dioxide, suitable for use in high quality dry cells, from Risdon anode mud. ImpurItIes present In the anode mud were removed prior to the electrolysis which was performed from a manganese sulphate bath using the following conditions.Temp. 95°CH2S04 50-55 g/l.Mn2+ 55-60 g/l.Anode c.d. 10·0 A/sq. ft.Operation under these conditions yielded current efficiency and power consumption figures of 95 per cent and 0·8 kWh/lb respectively. The product conformed to battery manufacturers' specifications as regards physical and chemical properties and performed satisfactorily in a battery testing programme.

Four mining alternatives for exploiting an ultra-deep orebody were assessed through a multidisciplinary evaluation process which involved: the generation of a 3D geological model; the design and scheduling of life-of-mine layouts; the analysis of anticipated ventilation and cooling conditions; the study of rock-related risks of mining in ultra-deep stress environments; the logistic implications of transporting men, rock and materials; and, lastly, the economic implications of each option. Once results from the integrated mine design assessment were available, mine planners were faced with an important problem to solve: how to identify the optimal mine design alternative when numerous assessment measures and multiple decision criteria needed to be considered simultaneously? To address this ‘multiple-attribute decision problem’ and arrive at the ‘optimal layout for ultra-depth’, a generic decision methodology that uses principles of ‘utility’ was applied. The methodology assumes that ‘single-value risk estimators’ do not account for the inherent variability of real conditions. Therefore, risk estimators were represented by statistical distributions of their incremental changes, where applicable. The stochastic variables, once defined, are used as inputs in the ‘utility’-based layout decision scheme. This ‘utility’-based decision methodology offers a framework for mine design decisions to be made objectively, when complex trade-offs between multiple risk domains need to be considered simultaneously. Due to increasing concerns of global rare earth element shortfalls in the near future, possible alternative sources of rare earth elements have recently become of economic interest. One such alternative is decanting acid mine water originating primarily from abandoned old mines in the Witwatersrand region of the Republic of South Africa. In this study, a novel way of rare earth element removal from the acid mine drainage was employed, making use of bentonite clay, which has very good adsorbent properties, as a rare earth element carrier material. The process can be economically viable only, if the elements can be selectively removed from the bentonite clay carrier material so as to yield reusable clay. Acid leaching was proposed to liberate the adsorbed rare earth elements from the bentonite clay. Accordingly, acid leaching experiments were performed to study the desorption of three commonly-found rare earth elements, namely neodymium, samarium, and dysprosium, from bentonite clay in the presence of sulphuric and hydrochloric acid. It was established that the three rare earth element species could be selectively removed as a group from iron, magnesium, and manganese metals through the careful manipulation of the pH. An investigation into the kinetic aspects of the rare earth element desorption process from the bentonite clay was also undertaken. The applicability of various kinetic models such as zero-order, pseudo first-order, pseudo second-order, elovich, parabolic diffusion, and power function were tested to describe the time-dependent desorption of rare earth elements from bentonite clay. It was determined that the pseudo second-order kinetic model represented the dissolution processes for neodymium, samarium, and dysprosium from bentonite clay the most accurately.

This paper briefly describes the characteristics and induced factors of coal mining bumps based on the investigation of recent bumps accidents occurred in China. According to the theory of non-equilibrium thermodynamic and dissipate structure, the process of strain energy accumulation and dissipation in the ?Coal-Surrounding Rock? system (CSRS) is discussed during the preparation of coal bumps. In addition, a series of experiments are conducted to analyze the relationship between bump-prone property and micro-structural characteristics of coal. The process of coal bumps induced by propagation of fractures and deterioration of coal mass properties are also analyzed systematically.

The Roa Opencast Coal Mine is situated at the north-eastern end of the Greymouth Coalfield. It lies on an eastern flank of the Paparoa Range, 16 km north-east of the town of Greymouth on the West Coast of the South Island. Road access is via a sealed road from Blackball to Roa, then by a 5.3 km all weather, gravel road, which gains 340 m in elevation from 190 m RL at Roa to a maximum height of 530 m near the opencast.

This paper investigates the role of vertical integration between chrome ore mines and ferrochromium smelters in the location of ferrochromium production capacity in South Africa and Zimbabwe. Vertical integration is important in understanding the increasing competitive position of these two countries as observations show that an increasingly larger share of the global market has been coming from integrated producers. The paper argues that the increased vertical integration between mines and smelters in South Africa and Zimbabwe has led to a lower cost of chrome ore as an input compared with other producers. Underlying this hypothesis is the basic tenet that, more likely than not, production will take place where the costs are lowest. The paper concentrates on high carbon ferrochromium (HCFC) production in market economy countries (MEC). Using an ordinary least squares model, the study tests the relationship between low chrome ore costs and vertical integration shows a statistically significant relationship. These findings partially support the view that the control of sources of chrome ore is a major source of competitiveness. FROM the results of his investigation of the hardenable copper-nickel-silicon and copper-cobalt-silicon alloys, M. G. Corson1 explained the dispersion-hardening effect by assuming the precipitation of the inter-metallic compounds nickel silicide and cobalt silicide, and on this basis he constructed diagrams for the pseudobinary systems copper-nickel silicide and copper-cobalt silicide. A consideration of these diagrams and of the factors that exert such an important influence upon the rate of precipitation, such as degree of supersaturation, nucleus number and rate of diffusion, leads to the expectation that the rate of precipitation of the silicides on reheating the quenched solid solutions at temperatures below the alpha-phase boundary should increase continuously as the reheating temperature is raised. The present investigation shows that while this rate does increase with the reheating temperature in a general way, it does not do so continuously. Supplements to Corson's diagrams are offered, showing the discontinuities, and slight modifications in the solubility curves are suggested.

The ability to efficiently process lowgrade ores has allowed the Gold Fields Mesquite Mine in Imperial County, CA to expand from a 2.1 Mt/a (2.3 million stpy) rate in 1986 to its present 7.3 Mt/ a (8 million stpy) processing rate. Increased tonnage demands led to the 1989 construction and startup of a dump leach pad to supplement the existing heap leach operation. This resulted in an excellent opportunity to compare the two processes at the same operation. Additional operating costs associated with the crushed ore heaps are justified through enhanced recoveries, even at very low ore grades. Gold Fields' Mesquite Mine is a gold heap leach facility located about 55 km (35 miles) east of Brawley in southeastern California. Five open-pit mines will be developed over the projected life of the property, covering a total area extending to a maximum of 5.5 km (3.4 miles) to the east and west, and 2.4 kin (1.5 miles) to the north and south. Mesquite will process 7.3 Mt (8 million st) of ore and produce more than 6.2 t (200 000 oz) of gold in 1990.

Silicon Carbide is an excellent refractory material. Its physical properties make it extremely useful, particularly in applications where corrosion resistance and wear are important considerations. Commercial silicon carbide refractory is frequently manufactured by bonding silicon carbide particles with clay; however, clay may cause problems in the sintered products. This study investigates the potential of replacing a portion of the clay with andalusite powder. The results show that micron size andalusite powder can improve not only the strength of the refractory but also the sinterability. The mechanisms for these improvements are discussed.

Codelco’s Salvador Project has been operating a block/panel caving mine for more than 50 years. This underground mining method dynamically mixes the ore and dilution. As a result, forecasting grades is difficult and achieving 100 per cent extraction of the reserves is practically impossible. A substantial volume of the ore mixed with dilution becomes remnant ore and remains to be subsequently extracted.A potential open pit mine is under evaluation at Codelco’s Salvador Project, which includes the extraction of remnant ore post-block caving extraction. An effective methodology has been implemented to estimate what is left behind once the underground mine has closed. A new mixing method using the Cellular Automata (Alfaro and Saavedra, 2004) approach has been used to allow estimation of the remnant ore with a sufficient level of confidence to be included as part of the open pit reserve.A remnant block model is created using elements such as in situ block model, drawpoint layouts, historical production records and the drawpoint extraction. Using this information, simulations of the extraction of the mine by month from 1959 to 2019 were completed, using different mixing scenarios and trying to replicate the tonnage and grade extracted.Finally, the remnant block model is categorised using a score card with four inputs to assess the risk of the estimation of this material into a category class (measured, indicated and inferred).CITATION:Villa, D and Farías, F, 2016. "The planning and construction of prime coking coal beneficiation plants in the nationalized mines in India are reviewed. Flow schemes, construction practice, materials consumption, and costs are detailed.Medium-capacity beneficiation plants with multiple loops are recommended under Indian conditions.IntroductionThe reserve of high-grade and easily washed metallurgical coal in India are quite limited. Prime coking coal constitutes approximately 22% of the total resources and occurs exclusively in the Jharia coalfield in the state of Bihar. Bharat Coking Coal Limited (a subsidiary of Coal India Limited (CIL) the nationalized mining sector of India) owns 80% of the Jharia collieries. The development of Jharia coalfield in the pre-nationalized period before 1971 has been characterized by a large number of small mines with primitive mining methods and low productivity. The production of prime coking coal to meet the demand of the steel industry in India has to increase from the existing level of 11.1 million tonnes to 43.4 million tonnes per annum by 2000 AD, thereby producing 5.61 million tonnes and 22.7 million tonnes of clean coal respectively. An ambitious program has been undertaken for development of bigger mines with an average production of 1 to 3 million tonnes per annum. With the fast dwindling reserves of good quality coking coal, more inferior grade coal seams, having difficult washing characteristics, are now being mined. All the coal from the future mines will have to be beneficiated to make it suitable for consumption of steel plants; the following washeries are being planned for construction by 2000 AD:"

Compostos orgânicos adicionados em soluções eletrolíticas podem influenciar na eficiência do eletrodepósito, no aspecto visual do material, nas fases formadas, na topografia e na dureza do revestimento. Para analisar esses parâmetros, um aço baixo carbono foi revestido com ligas Zn-Ni, a partir de três banhos distintos contendo os seguintes compostos orgânicos, além de outros reagentes: sacarina, trietilamina e ácido p-toluenossulfônico, a fim de compará-los entre si e com o banho sem composto orgânico. Para isso, utilizou-se microscópio eletrônico de varredura, espectroscopia de dispersão de raios-x e microscópio óptico confocal para análise da superfície, além de ultra-microdurômetro para determinação da dureza dinâmica do revestimento. Os resultados mostraram que os compostos orgânicos alteraram as características do depósito. Conclui-se que ocorreram alterações na eficiência catódica, na porcentagem dos elementos de Zn e Ni no revestimento, nas características de rugosidade, porosidade e dureza.

The Queens Bored Tunnels consist of 11,000 feet of 19'-6" inside diameter tunnels mined through rock, mixed face and dense glacial till, constructed with bolted gasketed one pass reinforced concrete liner. The tunnels are to be excavated with a pressurized face TBM, either EPB or slurry. The construction of the tunnels will require ground stabilization in the mixed face area, instrumentation and monitoring of railway infrastructure, underpinning of bridges, relocation and protection of utilities, demolition of some industrial buildings, construction of open-cut approach tunnels and emergency exits and vent plants. The purpose of this paper is to describe the scope of work, the suggested methodology and the proposed construction schedule.

Rational decision making is generally perceived by managers of operations to be a delicate process of committing large sums of money and putting other people's life at risk. Consequently most managers may argue that the decision process requires good judgement, intuition and extreme caution; and not one easily made through the use of fancy mathematical algorithms and computer programs. The advent of artificial intelligence and expert systems in the computer industry combined with recent technological innovations in mathematical and economic problem solving is sure to change this perception. PARETO OPTIMALITY is an economic and a mathematical optimisation concept applied to solving real life operational problems; and one that the current volatile economic forces would require managers to employ because it is virtually real. REALISMM is a computer software package developed using the principles of Pareto optimality, dynamic programming, optimal clustering of information and decision maker interaction to generate decision maker preferred solutions. REALISMM has scope for artificial intelligence and expert systems application for cases where the decision maker is unsure about his objective preferences.
