Other Federal agencies have been coming to the Bureau of Mines for help with the purchase and utilization of fuel, largely coal, almost since the day the Bureau was created in 1910. The requests covered a wide range of fuel- economy problems and included boiler-water treatment after it became apparent that water-formed deposits on heating surfaces acted as insulators, decreasing heat transfer and impairing fuel efficiency. Dr. Ralph E. Hall, a Bureau of Mines physical chemist determined the 3 reactions that cause adhering scale to form in boilers (7)2 and went on to introduce scientific principles into water treatment for scale prevention (8). Widespread publicity of these achievements increased the requests for help from Federal steam-generating plants. Since no other Federal agency (even those which were more directly concerned with testing water) wanted to provide boiler-feedwater service, the Bureau decided to continue to give requested help to Federal agencies, Later, the Congress endorsed such agency cooperation as an economy measure,

This research aims to test the hypothesis that the low retention rate of women in the mining industry is caused by workplace culture and policies established due to gender segregation. A quasi-experiment is developed to determine the cause-and-effect relationship between gender segregation-inspired culture and the retention of women. The experiment considers the impact of the job type and the operational environment. The analysis provides information on factors that cause low retention of women in the industry, the extent to which gender segregation plays a role, and insights that allow actionable and measurable changes in the industry.

In order to reduce the complexity of mechanisms influencing rock- fragmentation by blasting a simulation approach is proposed, using the capabilities of micro-computer interactive graphics. Situations involving cratering and bench blasting are simulated, and both jointed and intact rocks can be subjected to explosive action, taking into consideration its breakage mechanisms. Size analysis curves relating rock distribution before and after the blasts are determined and compared with field data.

The Manapouri Power Station is New Zealand’s largest hydroelectric facility located on the South Island of New Zealand. Constructed in the 1960’s, it includes a 700 MW under-ground power station and a 9.8 km (6.1 mile), 9.2 m (30 ft) diameter tailrace tunnel. The output of the power station is currently limited due to excessive head losses in the tailrace tunnel. To remedy this situation, the Electricity Corporation of New Zealand (ECNZ) retained Woodward-Clyde to design a second tailrace tunnel and appurtenant facilities and prepare Contract Documents for construction. The Project will involve the construction of a 9.8 km(6.1 miles), 10 m (33 ft) diameter, TBM-mined tunnel, hydraulic control structures at the upstream and downstream ends of the tunnel, an underground dewatering shaft and station, and tailrace channel improvements. This paper summarizes the key design and construction issues addressed during the planning and design phases, outlines the risk management provisions incorporated in the Contract, and overviews the Interactive Tender Process (ITP)that was implemented during the pre-tendering and tendering periods.

"Crushing and grinding of ores and their beneficiation by washing away gangue minerals has been practiced since ancient times. Primitive crushing was done by hand pounding the ore with a hard stone then by using metallic hammers. The mortar and pestle was mechanized using a lever and when the size of operations increased in the middle ages, the stamp mill was introduced. The grindstone played an important role in grinding of ores. Panning for gold and hand sorting of minerals were two old methods of separation, now gave way to modern techniques. Flotation started in the middle of the nineteenth century by using oils to collect the mineral particles and float them on the surface of the aqueous slurry. It was only in the 1920s when it was discovered that organic compounds were affective floating agents. Textbooks written by distinguished engineers such as Rittinger, Rickard, Pryor, Taggart, Richards, Gaudin, and others contributed to the recognition of this field as a new discipline to be taught in Universities. INTRODUCTIONThe ancient Egyptians knew already that it would be easier to melt an earth rich in gold particles than another which is poor. As a result all efforts were made to enrich the gold by washing away the light gangue minerals (Figure 1). Another ancient method for enriching gold particles from a river stream was by means of fleece, hence the Greek myth of the “golden fleece”. The present day Georgia was known in ancient times as Colchis and was a center for gold working. It was known to the ancient Greek as the land of Golden Fleece. The use of special cloth to catch gold particles was also described by Agricola in his 1555 book De Re Metallica (Figure 2)."

"The application of telerobotics to mining is currently being introduced into production systems around the world. Mining companies in Canada, Sweden, South Africa, and Australia have tended to lead the international charge to this form of technology for mining. While this introduction is taking place, a few basic questions have yet to be answered. How many machines can a single operator run? How many types of machines can a single operator run?A Canadian Research Chair in Robotics and Mine Automation has been established at Laurentian University to investigate these questions and many more through a series of experiments in a telerobotics laboratory that connects Laurentian teleoperation workstations to model mining machines at Cambrian College’s eDome. The laboratory supports many experiments allowing researchers to physically run multiple robot scenarios differing the numbers and types of machines at one quarter scale. Further experiments are being designed to investigate the potential for managing time delays in telerobotics. This paper describes the laboratory, experiments, and some preliminary results."

Traditionally, iron ore has been reduced with coke in a blast furnace and the hot-metal product of the blast furnace containing carbon, manganese, silicon, sulphur and phosphorous, was subsequently refined in a steelmaking furnace. During iron making as well as during steelmaking, significant amounts of slag are produced. Two decades ago, more than 13 m tonne of blast furnace slag and 4 m tonne of steelmaking slag per annum were produced in the USA alone. It is, therefore, not surprising that many attempts have been made to re-use iron and steelmaking slags. However, these slags are not merely metallurgical waste products but, on the contrary, their compositions and physical properties are judiciously designed to optimize the operations in the respective metallurgical reactors. The variation in composition and properties of blast furnaces lags are largely determined by the gangue in the ore and ash in the coke and much progress has been made in the re-use of such slag. With respect to steelmaking slag, emphasis has in recent years been placed on hot-metal treatment before refining and ladle treatment after decarburization. The bulk removal of silicon, phosphorous and sulphur from the hot-metal product of the blast furnace by specially designed slags prior to refining in a basic oxygen furnace, has reduced tap-to-tap time, lowered cost and produced steel of much higher quality. The use of synthetic slags in ladle refining techniques subsequent to decarburization in the basic oxygen furnace has resulted in reduced hydrogen and nitrogen contents and reduced solute impurities. Moreover, inclusion shape and composition control, again by the use of specially designed slags has led to the achievement of much improved mechanical properties of the steel. In these revised process routes, slag of different compositions are produced in the variety of unit processes and hence the re-use of steelmaking slags has become much more complex. Clearly, a thorough understanding of the design and use of these different slags is a pre-requisite to the development of re-use strategies. Japanese steelmakers have spearheaded attempts to reduce slag volumes in the individual unit processes and to strive towards ‘slagless steelmaking’ by recycling slags internally. Steelmaking slag volumes have been reduced on commercial scale from about 140 kg/tonne steel to 60kg/tonne steel. Moreover, model predictions have shown that, in principle, all slag can be recycled and the phosphorous extracted to produce fertilizer. This development is of particular significance since the supply of low-phosphorous iron ores is diminishing at an ever increasing rate. Keywords: slag, environment, iron, steel,

Paper presented at the IAGOD international symposium on mineralization related to mafic and ultramafic rocks held in Orleans, France, 1-3 September 1993. A lithological and geochemical study revealed significant lateral variation of the interval over 170 km of strike, from about 30 m at the Union Section to 220 m near Brits. The cumulates also become more evolved and leucocratic with distance from the Union Section both towards the NE (Amandelbult) and SE (Impala, Rustenburg and Brits). It is inferred that the persistent heat flux from a putative major feeder zone near the Union Section impaired deposition of felsic cumulates in the vicinity, delaying crystallisation of successive phases in parts of the chamber near the feeder. New influxes were therefore deposited on a footwall of varying thickness and lithology in response to different degrees of crystallisation and accumulation along strike. Precipitated calcium carbonate is used as a filler and coating material in the manufacturing of paper because of its high brightness and light scattering characteristics. However, beneficiated calcite has similar potential, given the fact that the industrial specifications are already achieved. For paper industries, the requirement is that the desired product should be pure and have a brightness of 93 to 95 percent. A very-high-grade calcite deposit of around 92 percent is located in the north of Norway, which is used as the raw material for ground calcium carbonate (GCC) feed for the paper industries. There is a substantial amount of calcite resource, which has pyrite and pyrrhotite as major impurities. These sulfides, even when present in minor concentrations, impart color to the end product (paper). Removing these minerals is estimated to increase utilization of the deposit by 10  percent, which represents several million tonnes of calcite marble. Due to the requirement for environmentally friendly reagents and chemicals by the mineral industry, fatty di-amines are being tested for pyrite and pyrrhotite flotation. The interaction mechanism of diamine with the main components of the ore were studied and optimum conditions for removal of sulfide impurities are outlined.

This work discusses the sulfur dioxide (SO2) leaching of low-grade ferruginous manganese ores to selectively recover manganese (Mn) as manganese sulfate (MnSO4), followed by electrowinning of the purified MnSO4 to produce electrolytic manganese dioxide (EMD). The effects of the leaching process parameters on Mn recovery were studied, and the leaching duration and SO2 flow rate were found to have significant effects. Under the optimum conditions derived for grade 1 ore (with total Mn content of approximately 17.16 percent), the specific SO2 requirement (SSR) — that is, the SO2 flow rate per gram of Mn in the leach slurry — was calculated to be 0.014 L/min. At the SO2 flow rate calculated using SSR for grade 2 ore (with total Mn content of approximately 26.29 percent), a Mn recovery rate of 94 percent was realized. Electrowinning of the purified MnSO4 generated after leaching resulted in EMD with 88.01 percent purity and a γ structure.

Wet mining of auriferous gravels at L & MÆs Waikaka operation in Southland creates spoil dumps derived from stripping of a clay rich overburden, tailings from past dredging and the processing of auriferous sands and gravels. Over recent times, spoil dumps have slumped on six occasions, threatening the viability of the wet mining operation. Close examination of slump morphology, coupled with the sequence of material placement and rate of dumping suggested a mechanism associated with undrained failure of a 2 m layer of silt and sand tails forming the base of dumps.Commencing with some information on the geotechnical properties of source overburden, back analysis of failure morphology and sequence and development of undrained loading conditions from first principals, the most likely failure mechanism and factors controlling failure were defined. Based on analysis results, a scheme to stabilise the lowwall dumps was developed and implemented, augmented by continuous monitoring of pore pressures in the basal wet tails, and laboratory testing for confirmation of computed material properties.Lowwall spoil stability has improved since implementation involving changes to the method of spoil loading, and modification of wet tails composition to improve permeability and drainage of the basal wet tails under load. The method and approach to prediction and verification of failure mechanism provide a sound basis for continued mining of deeper auriferous gravels.

The Niagara Tunnel Project (NTP) is a 10.4-km- (6.5- mile-) long, 14.4-m (47.5-ft) bored tunnel that will run under the city of Niagara Falls from the Upper Niagara River to the Sir Adam Beck power station. The completed project will enhance the capacity of the Sir Adam Beck power station by adding 500 m3 /sec (17,657 cu ft/sec) of water through the tunnel. The project uses the world?s largest hard-rock tunnel boring machine (TBM) at 14.4 m (47.5 ft) in diameter to excavate the tunnel. Features of the project include the use of a high performance (HP) main beam TBM, state-of-the-art ground support and tunnel logistics systems. A continuous conveyor is used for muck transport from the TBM to the disposal area In June 2004, the Ontario government announced that Ontario Power Generation (OPG) had been given approval to proceed with the third tunnel under the city of Niagara Falls ? the first two tunnels were constructed in the 1950s using drill-and-blast techniques. The third tunnel, appropriately named the Niagara Tunnel Project (NTP), consists of a 10.4-km- (6.5-mile-) long TBM-bored, concrete-lined tunnel with a finished diameter of 12.5 m (41.1 ft). In August 2005, OPG the selected of Strabag of Austria, one of the largest construction companies in Europe, as the contractor to build the NTP at a price of C$600 million. In September 2005, Strabag selected The Robbins Co. of Solon, OH to design, manufacture and deliver a new 14.4- m- (47.5-ft-) diameter high performance, state-of-the-art main beam hard rock TBM to be used in the excavation of the tunnel. To meet the aggressive construction schedule as requested by OPG/Strabag, the TBM needed to be sup-plied as ready-to-bore within a 12-month period after the contract was awarded to Robbins.

Electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and quantitative X-ray diffraction (QXRD) techniques are capable of providing high-quality quantitative information regarding the phase mineralogy and distribution of alumina within iron ore samples. The techniques, however, use different methodologies in determining the mineralogical information (ie structural versus chemical), which introduces some limitations. In this study, EPMA was used to identify and quantify the deportment of alumina within mineral phases in iron ore samples (-1 mm crushed) sourced from different suppliers. Results were directly compared with quantitative mineralogical data derived from QXRD to provide an evaluation of the relative merits of both techniques. The four ores studied contained alumina either in the form of gibbsite, aluminosilicates (eg kaolinite), or associated with goethite.For minor phases, gibbsite and kaolinite, the abundance trends measured via QXRD were generally reflected in the EPMA data. Agreement was less satisfactory for the more abundant goethite phase (both low- and high-Al forms). The discrepancy may be the result of sampling issues arising from textural features such as grain size, and also a systematic overestimate in the amount of Al-rich goethite when hematite and Al-bearing phases are finely intermixed and the EPMA step size is coarse. A second difference in the EPMA results compared to the QXRD data was in regard to quantification of low-Al and high-Al goethite phases. The sensitivity of the chemical-based EPMA was better for distinguishing between high- and low-Al goethite although the results remain overprinted by potential errors introduced via sampling.Care should be taken when directly comparing results from each method, although in general the data should be considered complementary, as each approach provides slightly different results and interpretations regarding the overall mineralogy.CITATION:Pownceby, M I, MacRae, C M and Torpy, A, 2017. Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Eng. (Mining Eng.) Cullinan Diamond Mine currently handles 3.2 million tons of run of ore per annum. This is done by means of an underground train system, which is located at 763 metre level. Four trains, one in each quarter of the pipe, collect ore from passes and transport it to centrally located tips in the north and south of the pipe. The ore is then split into coarse and fine fractions. The coarse fraction proceeds to the primary crushers in the north and south. Historically, mining has been performed in such a manner that an equal amount of ore has reported to each quarter of the pipe. However, the tonnage profile of the mine will change such that the ore will no longer be split equally. For approximately five years the majority of ore will report to the east and thereafter most of the ore will report to the western portion of the mine. This will continue for the remainder of the current infrastructure level?s operational life. Coupled with this is the fact that the mine is aiming to increase its annual production to 3.8 million tons. The result is that the current ground handling system cannot accommodate the additional tons and therefore alternative ground handling options have been investigated. The continued existence of Cullinan Diamond Mine relies on finding a system that can economically handle the additional tonnage. Three options were investigated. Firstly, a train option, which would be an upgrade of the current system, was investigated. Two truck options were also investigated, the first of which was a conventional truck option. The second truck option was more interesting and involved an unfamiliar Combi truck system. The truck options were investigated primarily due to the fact that the block height of the BA West (a new production block) can be increased by 15 meters if a truck option is decided upon. This would create a significant increase in revenue for the BA West project. Each of the options was assessed in terms of its physical and financial feasibility. In terms of the physical constraints, it was found that all three systems could work. Detailed financial analysis indicated that either of the two truck options would be a suitable solution. However, due to the limited information regarding the Combi truck option, it should be further investigated. This applies particularly to the actual running and maintenance costs for the equipment.

THE North Mount Lyell Mine is situated on the southern side of Mount Lyell at an altitude of 1750 ft. above sea-level. The average rainfall is 117 in., and there are generally several light falls of snow during the year. Despite the heavy rainfall, which is fairly evenly distributed over each of the twelve months, the climate is equable and not unduly rigorous, and, provided that the mine employee is suitably clad, it is only on exceptional days that he experiences any discomfort by becoming wet journeying to and from the mine.The majority of employes reside at Queenstown, and are conveyed by special trains to and from the top of the haulage, which is less than a mile from the mine. The mean surface temperature at the mine is 46° F., with a maximum variation from 26° F. to 85° F., the relative humidity generally being higher than in other districts. The rock temperature is 48° F. on the 200-ft. or Main Adit level, and 54° F, on the 1200-ft. level, giving a rise of 6° F. for 1000 ft. in depth.The ventilation of the mine is natural, the downcast being served by the Crown and Blocks shafts and the Crown mullock pass, and the upcast air is carried away from the workings by the Main shaft and the Nos. 1 and 2 mullock passes. The quantity of air circulating varies from 25,000 cub. ft. to 35,000 cub. ft. per minute, the greater quantity moving in the colder weather. The downcast air in traversing the wet shafts becomes saturated and enters the level at the rock temperature of 54° F. in winter and about 56° F. in summer, while temperature readings of the outcast air indicate that it varies very little.In the southern end of the mine the Blocks shaft downcast air upcasts through the different stopes, and their mullock passes, to the level above for each level to the 700-ft. level, where it passes to one of the main uptakes. "The first SkimAir flash flotation cell was installed in Outokumpu’s Hammaslahti Copper Concentrator in 1982 to prevent overgrinding of soft sulphides in the milling circuit. Since this first installation the popularity of the flash flotation has fluctuated depending on metal market conditions and regional preferences. Units have been installed in many commodities including copper, lead, gold, PGMs, silver and nickel. Though it has been successfully employed in many operations around the world, flash flotation technology is still not well understood by many in the mining industry. This paper will discuss aspects of flash flotation flowsheet development along with some of the metallurgical and engineering considerations required to successfully incorporate flash flotation into new or existing milling circuits. This paper will also try and debunk some of the myths that exist around flash flotation cells and their operation. Case studies of flash flotation implementation will be discussed.IntroductionModern flash flotation technology was developed several decades ago by Outokumpu, with the first commercial installation of this technology being at the Hammaslahti concentrator in Finland in 1982 (Kallioinen & Niitti, 1985). This was a relatively modestly sized SK80 cell producing final grade copper concentrate directly from the flash flotation cell operating in the grinding circuit. Since that time the size and number of flash flotation cells installed globally has grown considerably to the point where today, it is a widely known application of flotation technology for amenable ores. Owing to their long history in developing the technology, Outotec are the market leader with their SkimAir range of flash flotation cells. Though there is a general awareness of flash flotation process in the mineral processing industry, there is a lack of detailed understanding of the process and the benefits it can provide to new and existing operations."

In this report, recommendations are made for programs to develop workable techniques to stop or prevent acid mine drainage formation in those underground coal mines where acid production could take place. These recommendations include development of mine closure technology, development of surface water infiltration control procedures, study of the effect of roof collapse on mine water characteristics, evaluation of the long-term effects of flooding underground mines above drainage, investigation of the effectiveness of section sealing in active mines, development of a simple model for predicting mine water quality and quantity, preparation of a manual on mine drainage abatement procedures, and development of a program to disseminate information on mine drainage abatement to the coal industry. These recommendations are based on an in-depth evaluation of information acquired over years of research on acid mine drainage formation, on numerous laboratory and field studies of methods of preventing or minimizing acid mine drainage formation, and on review of the geological, hydrological, and mineralogical factors involved. Natural materials can be used successfully in the construction of heap leach pads. The use of these materials usually result in the least expensive approach for such facilities. Sufficient geotechnical experience has been gained in the design and construction of clay heap leach pads so that they can be used with confidence. A number of operators presently use clay pads in their heap leach facilities; these include Alligator Ridge, Ely, Nevada (gold), and Union Carbide, Gas Hills, Wyoming (uranium). This paper describes the construction and field investigation of a clay pad for the heap leaching of agglomerated precious tailings. The project is located in the Mojave Desert, Southern California. The design had to satisfy operational requirements as well as regulatory requirements. The California Water Quality Control Board (WQCB) was one of the agencies which had to issue a permit for the project. Their biggest concern was the discharge or escape of cyanide into the environment. Rather stringent requirements were therefore placed on the pad design criteria, especially in terms of permeability.
