Between February and August of 1986, Dr Alfred Petrick visited New Zealand sponsored under a Fulbright grant administered by the New Zealand-United States Educational Foundation. The grant supported a research project completed by Dr Petrick having as an objective, the preparation of a preliminary economic evaluation of the mining of six Otago lignite deposits as a source of energy for steam power generation or in liquid fuels. The research is limited to consideration of preliminary geological and engineering data on the six deposits and to the time constraints of the Fulbright visit. This paper is a summary of the final Fulbright report. The complete report including the listings of the computer programs is available from the Otago School of Mines.

Full-column anchored resin bolts were first used in underground mines in 1972. These bolts appear to improve support in many roof bolt applications, as indicated by the use of about 30 million resin bolts in 1980. In the mid-1970's, Bureau of Mines in-vestigators began looking for a substitute for resin because of its short supply and rapidly increasing price. The investigators selected accelerated gypsum plaster (CaSO. ·1/2H20), which becomes gypsum (CaSO.· 2H20) when mixed with water. Gypsum makes an effective alternate grout material because it hardens quickly, is readily available, and is inexpensive in comparison with other cementitious materials. The Bureau received a patent (U.s. patent 4,096,944) for a system combining water capsules (wax-encapsulated water) with plaster into cartridges resembling resin cartridges. This report presents the results of tests conducted by the Bureau on the plaster, the water capsules, and their combined use in cartridges. The tests were designed to determine how the gypsum-plaster water capsule bolting system performs and what happens in the hole while the bolt is being inserted through the cartridge. The test results indicate that water capsule plaster cartridges are a workable alternative to resin cartridges under normal or dry conditions.

The south west area of Cyprus has a long history of slope instability problems. The location and extent of these landslides has been influenced by ground morphology, geological structure and the presence of weak rocks and cohesive soils. The main triggering mechanisms have been precipitation and/or seismic events. Landslides have contributed to the decision to relocate villages and considerable efforts have been put into maintaining the integrity of the local transportation network. This paper uses a recent case study of road embankment failure near Pentalia in southwest Cyprus to review the available tools for the analysis of slope instability. It further demonstrates how the shear strength reduction technique can be used in a finite element analysis to better visualise the slope instability mechanism of a road embankment and provide a reliable tool in selecting appropriate remedial measures.

The accompanying supply/demand flow diagrams and 10-year tables for mineral and fuel commodities present essential data required by government, industry, and others to formulate policies and programs that can help assure an adequate and continuing supply of mineral raw materials. The 10-year data base terminates with 1973 figures because adequate world information was not available beyond that date. Moreover, 1974 was an anomalous year with respect to prices, supply, and demand for many commodities. The selected mineral supply/demand tables and flow diagrams comprise but one "output" from the massive body of "information and data collected and com-piled by the Bureau of Mines on a continuing basis covering mineral production consumption, prices, shipments, imports, exports, and stocks, as well as industry activities in all States and abroad.

"Mineral separation by exploiting the differences in mineral or metal specific gravities (sg) has been used since antiquity. In the modern era, this is most commonly seen in the recovery of gold by the use of centrifugal concentrators and the separation of coal (low sg) from waste rock (high sg) using heavy media cyclones and jigs. Other metals, notably oxides of tin and tungsten, are successfully recovered using some combination of jigs, spirals and shaking tables. However, many conventional gravity separation systems are limited to fairly coarse (>1 mm) to medium (>100 micron) particle separations due to the limitations of the gravitational separation forces in conventional equipment.Many of the high specific gravity minerals of interest are friable (e.g. cassiterite, wolframite, etc.) and excessive fines are generated in the grinding/comminution circuits which cannot be recovered with conventional equipment and may be lost directly to the tailings stream. Recent developments in centrifugal gravity separation equipment specifically designed for fine or ultra-fine particle separation and recovery have resulted in heavy mineral particle recoveries as fine as 10-20 microns. Ongoing research work has also identified the benefit of closed-circuit, multi-stage gravity recovery circuits using some combination of centrifugal concentrators and conventional equipment (tables, spirals, flotation, etc.) which can substantially increase overall plant recovery and final concentrate grade.This paper will provide details of the evolution of non-fluidized bed gravity concentrators for high sg mineral recoveries, correlate laboratory scale development work with plant results to confirm scale-up, and show how recent flowsheet developments have contributed to significantly improved plant performance.IntroductionGravity concentration is one of the oldest and most cost effective metal and/or mineral recovery systems, ranging from the classic hand panning of alluvial gold, through to the large scale production of a wide range of metals and minerals, including gold, silver, PGMs, black sands, coal and iron oxides. Conventional gravity recovery systems, comprised of some combination of sluices, spirals, jigs and shaking tables have limited application in fine particle (i.e. <100 microns) recovery, or where there are limited differences in particle specific gravities (sg), e.g. the separation of high sg, high value metal oxides (e.g. those of tin, tantalum or tungsten), from medium sg, lower value metal sulfides such as pyrite and pyrrhotite. These unit operations tend to have limited capacity, and while double and triple turn spirals and multi-deck tables have been developed, extensive floor space is often required in order to process the tonnages incorporated in the modern mineral processing plant."

The use of water-cooled copper components as sidewall elements of submerged arc furnaces and other pyrometallurgical applications has become increasingly common. The high cooling efficiency of copper has made it possible to increase the service life of furnace refractories when compared to conventional refractory linings. However, even the self-healing effect of ?freezing? worn areas of the lining does not necessarily protect the copper coolers against wear or corrosion completely. In order to avoid furnace explosions, various methods have been used to monitor the wear of coolers. Unfortunately, these have not been able consistently to identify localized wear. Thos Begbie (South African) and SAVEWAY (German) jointly developed technology to embed a line sensor into the copper cooler during the casting process. This system allows an exhaustive monitoring of the copper cooler. A SAVELINE sensor is placed inside the copper-cooling panel between the water-cooling passage and the hot face of the panel. The sensor follows the meandering shape of the cooling water channels. In the first instance, the sensor provides analogue information as the thickness of the copper reduces. Secondly, this wear signal will be confirmed by a signal of interruption if the sensor is washed away. Because of the structure of the sensor, a self-diagnosis is possible and indications can be confirmed (double proofed).Subsequent to the manufacture of some test pieces, coolers for a large submerged arc furnace were manufactured. The sensorized coolers have been installed at the intermittent surface (slag line) where the largest amount of corrosion has been encountered. The system has been operating since December 2005 in what is considered one of the largest submerged arc furnaces in South Africa. The discovery of the Nyidinghu Iron Ore Deposit totalling 2.46 Bt of resource continues FortescueÆs highly successful exploration record of discovering multi-billion tonne deposits under cover with little to no surface expression. Since inception in 2003 Fortescue have discovered and delineated the Christmas Creek and Cloudbreak deposits in the Chichester Range totalling 3.38 Bt and 3.25 Bt in the Solomon region. Together with other deposits Fortescues resource portfolio now approximates 10 Bt of hematite - goethite mineralisation.The Nyidinghu deposit is situated on the southern margin of the Fortescue Valley, 35 km south of FortescueÆs Cloudbreak mining operations on the north margin of the valley. Nyidinghu comprises approximately 70 per cent BID martite - goethite mineralisation hosted by the Brockman Iron Formation and 30 per cent CID beneath alluvial outwash of the Weeli Wolli Creek in to the Fortescue Valley. Minor DID mineralisation occurs at the deposit margins.BID mineralisation is strongly controlled by the pre-existing NE/SW trending Weeli Wolli Fault system and bounded to the north by the Poonda Fault. Both fault systems are interpreted to have had a long and complex history commencing pre Ophthalmian Orogeny (ca 2.2 Ga) and remaining intermittently active through the Proterozoic.CID at Nyidinghu is the downstream continuation of the combined Weeli Wolli/Marillana CID palaeochannel system being mined by Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton at Yandicoogina and Yandi, respectively.Exploration commenced in August 2010 with the inaugural resource announcement of 1 Bt being made just six months later. To date over 1700 RC and 85 diamond core holes have been drilled forming the basis for the resource of 2.46 Bt and ongoing feasibility studies. Rhyolitic rocks are volumetrically significant in the eastern part of the Coromandel gold province, yet deposits hosted by rhyolite (Kapowai, Broken Hills, Neavesville, Wharekirauponga and Waihi Beach) are generally low grade and subeconomic, especially compared with andesite-hosted deposits. In contrast, rhyolitic volcanic centres in Nevada host a number of economically significant epithermal gold deposits such as Round Mountain, Sleeper and Bullfrog. The Nevada deposits are associated with 27-20 Ma continental arc volcanics dominated by ignimbrites (eg Round Mountain), or younger 17-9 Ma bimodal rhyolite-basalt volcanism related to extensional basin-and-range tectonics (eg Sleeper). The Round Mountain deposit is localised on a caldera boundary fault and the mineralisation was deposited soon after eruption of the host rhyodacitic ignimbrite. In other Nevada deposits, hydrothermal systems are linked to the closing stages of flow-dome complexes and mineralisation is localised along normal faults associated with extensional basin-and-range tectonism. The style and composition of the mineralisation is similar in both the Coromandel and Nevada deposits and consists of sheeted and stockwork quartz veins, containing electrum as the main ore mineral and only minor sulphides (mainly pyrite) Likewise, the vein minerals were deposited from low salinity hydrothermal fluids in the temperature range of 200-270¦C. Both the Neavesville and Round Mountain deposits are geochemically anomalous in molybdenum. The deep oxidation of the Nevada gold deposits, dry climate and low level of competing land uses combine to make it economic to mine and process very low grade ore (0.2 - 2.0 g/t Au) by heap-leaching with cyanide solutions in most areas of Nevada. Although extensive low grade gold mineralisation is known at deposits such as Wharekirauponga and Neavesville, it is sub-economic because of shallow oxidation and land use conditions that are unfavourable for open pit mining and heap leaching.

Longwall caving, one of the most economical and attractive mining methods, is yet one of the most difficult and hazardous.1 This dualism is inherent in a method which manipulates the mine supports themselves to aid in excavation. The difficulty is further compounded by the lack of an analytical method to predict and control results. This paper is intended to meet this need by providing a first approximation to the mechanics involved. The analysis will be limited to materials which are linear-elastic, homogeneous and isotropic. The rock structure is assumed to consist of beds of uniform thickness with no interbed bonding.2 Consequently, the mine roof can be likened to a beam, in which the action characteristic of longwall caving is the controlled deflection of the barrier supports. This deflection causes load to be intentionally transferred from these barrier props to the working face.3 Two of the requirements of this method, shared in common with other mining methods, are the provision of (1) adequate and (2) safe working space. The third requirement is the one characteristic of longwall caving and is somewhat in conflict with the second; (3) the development of near-failure static loads at the face. Requirement (1) is handled by spacing the barrier props sufficiently far from the working face for efficient operation. Requirement (2) limits the static stresses in the structure to predetermined allowable values. This means that it is not desirable to induce a maximum load on the working face as requirement (3) may imply. Such a condition could produce collapse in the whole structure. It is the purpose of the undercut to limit the depth, and thereby control the failure of the face. Therefore, requirement (3) really means the development of an optimum, not maximum, load which, in conjunction with undercutting, produces failure at the working face, with minimum powder consumption. Stress analysis requires an exact delineation of the structure and loads. The structure will be defined as the immediate roof and its supports. Since the roof is severed at the caving line, the supports reduce to the barrier props and the working face, as shown in Fig. 1. The mechanics of failure within the working face itself are complex and beyond the scope of this study, since the face represents a typical mine invert structure.4 However, this lack can be made good by the judicious collection of field data. The primary load on the structure is its own weight or body load which can be considered uniformly distributed over its upper surface. Additional loading occurs due to interference of overbeds with the structure. Wherever this occurs, the effect can be approximated by a load uniformly distributed on the upper surface of the structure.5 When this interference is intermittent, as with a much thicker overbed, the elastic curve for the overbed is superimposed on that for the structure and the extent of interference noted, as Fig. 2 shows. However, for simplicity, this study will ignore such intermittent loads without impairing the generality of approach. Consequently, the free-body diagram is that of a uniformly loaded cantilever beam with an inter-mediate support, as shown in Fig. 3. This section of the Minerals Yearbook reviews the minerals industries of 29 countries: the 12 nations of the European Community (Belgium, France, the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG), Italy, Greece, the Netherlands, Denmark/Greenland, Spain, Portugal, Luxembourg, The United Kingdom, and Ireland); 6 of the 7 nations of the European Free Trade Association (Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland, Austria, and Switzerland); Malta; the 8 Centrally Planned Economies of Eastern Europe (the German Democratic Republic (GDR), Poland, Yugoslavia, Albania, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Romania, and Bulgaria); and the U.S.S.R. Western Europe Western Europe [loosely defined to include the 12 nations of the European Com-munity (EC) and the 7 nations of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA)] is the single largest trading area and consumer of raw materials in the world. If Western Europe was at one time an important mining sector, it has now increasingly relegated the role of supplying minerals for its minerals processing industry to its ex-colonies in North and South America, Africa, and Australia. In this regard, Western Europe is the most important determinant of raw materials consumption (and thus, indirectly, raw materials production). There is an important reason for this since Western Europe lies somewhere between Japan at one extreme and the United States and the U.S.S.R. at the other extreme as regards the availability of natural resources.

Northside Storage Tunnel provides 500 megalitres (Ml) (130 million gallons) of storage capacity to capture stormwater/sewage overflows into Sydney Harbour. The6.6 m diameter TBM driven tunnel traverses Middle Harbour 85 m (280 ft) below sea level and through a sandstone/shale rock mass, highly disturbed by stress relief, 20 m(65 ft) beneath the base of the sediment filled palaeochannel. Target limits for inflow, groundwater drawdown and settlement of the valley beaches were achieved by systematic forward grouting from the TBM. Support included rockbolts, sets and shotcrete to carry rock loads, control block instability and spalling and to provide durability and serviceability. This paper describes the tunnelling and grouting works and their effectiveness.

La planta de lixiviación, extracción por solventes y electrodeposición (L-SX-EW) de Southern Perú es una operación hidrometalúrgica dedicada a la lixiviación ácido – bacteriana de los botaderos de mineral de baja ley de la Mina Toquepala, para la producción de cobre catódico de la más alta pureza. En ese sentido, el presente trabajo describe la evolución del sistema de control y supervisión de esta planta minera en Cuajone. Para ello, dicha planta debe tener una actualización constante de sus sistemas de control y ser capaz de cambiar con la velocidad a la que avanza la tecnología de Control de Procesos. Asimismo, debe contar con personal calificado que permita el desarrollo y modernización de los sistemas sea continuo y no dependa solo de expansiones y ampliaciones ejecutadas por especialistas externos. De forma que este software de supervisión, no solamente considera la capacidad de operar la planta, si no debe ser una ayuda tanto para el operador como para brindar información en la correcta toma de decisiones.

Worldwide, the major Manganese ores can be separated into three different types: ?Oxidized ores (MnO2): in Australia, Gabon, Brazil,?. ?Semi-oxidized ores (Mn2O3): in South-Africa, Australia,?. ?Carbonated ore (MnCO3): in Ghana, South Africa, Kazhakstan?. The other Manganese ores are less rich but can be used locally or in the neighbour countries (China, Ukraina, India?). Since the beginning of the 20th Century, Manganese has played a big role in the steel industry process average usage ratio: 9,5 kg/mt of steel). The recent grow-up of this industry has led to an increase of Manganese ores demand. In parallel, several companies have increased their Manganese ore producing capacity. In this presentation, we explain the link between the main Manganese ores characteristics and the key different factors for an effective and low cost Mn alloys production (HCFeMn and SiMn): ?Chemistry ?Size ?Reactivity Then we will point out the advantages of Comilog ore and Sintec ® usages in various Manganese alloy metallurgical process compared with the other main ores and with the local ores. Some advised formulations for the different kinds of furnaces and alloys will be also discussed.

Seismic networks in deep gold mines of South Africa are often planar owing to the tabular geometry of the orebody and, therefore, the mining infrastructure. Consequently, seismic event locations are poorly constrained in the direction perpendicular to the reef plane, and symmetrical locations above and below the reef plane may fit the observed data equally well. This problem may be resolved in situations where the strata above and below the reef plane have significantly different seismic velocities, which is the case for the Ventersdorp Contact Reef at Kusasalethu mine (previously Elandskraal, the amalgamation of Deelkraal and Elandsrand). A location method using a layered location model that takes into account the velocity contrast between the layers was tested. Observed direct- and head-waves were used to determine the velocity bounds of the P-wave velocities in the two-layer model. The data-set was also used to find the best P- and S-wave velocities for the two layers by grid searching over a range of velocities and minimizing the sum of the travel-time residuals. The results from the grid search and those from the calibration of velocities using direct- and head-waves give similar P-wave velocities for each of the two layers. A second set of seismic events was then relocated with this layered model and locations closer to reef were found. This simple layered location method goes some way to reduce the reefperpendicular location errors for Kusasalethu mine in particular. Keywords mine seismology, velocity model, location methods.

A dedicated tunnel construction version of the Caterpillar 328D LCR compact radius excavator is proving highly productive on the A9 Autoroute construction project near Visp, in Switzerland. It is the first machine of its kind to operate on a Swiss contract and uses a special dedicated front attachment designed and constructed by German Caterpillar dealer Zeppelin. The machine offers a powerful, stable and compact solution for tunneling contractors. A rear overhang of just 305 mm (12 in.) provides a tail swing radius of just 1.9 m (6.2 ft). The 328D LCR is ideal for the restricted working areas within a tunnel construction site. The machine is equipped with the wide tracks from the 330D L conventional crawler excavator, ensuring maximum stability when operating. In addition, the boom mounting has been moved further toward the center of the machine for the tunnel model, creating an increased lift capacity over the front end compared with a standard 325D L. The boom itself features a robust box section construction, with high-strength steels, additional supporting struts and reinforced bearings for maximum durability. All pins have hard-chromium plating for optimum protection against wear. Stick digging force is a powerful 134 kN, with up to 212 kN of bucket digging force available, for maximum penetration in blasted material. The 328D LCR is also equipped with a heavy-duty dozer blade as standard. This ensures outstanding stability when working and providing a useful secondary tool for clearing and leveling within the jobsite. Two 45° tilting mechanisms in the boom construction, allow the boom to be swung to 45° on either side of the machine. So the specially designed attachment linkage provides increased rollback for access to the roof of the tunnel. A Caterpillar CW45S mechanical quick-coupler allows rapid changes between specialist tunneling attachments, standard Caterpillar buckets and a range of Caterpillar work tools. The machine is powered by a Caterpillar C7 diesel engine. This six-cylinder EU Stage IIIA diesel motor [ ] offers 8 percent more power than its predecessor, with 140 kW (190 hp) available at just 1,800 rpm. Caterpillar?s ACERT combustion technology results in lower fuel consumption and reduced exhaust emissions. However, the tunnel machine is also equipped with a diesel particulate filter as standard, to further cut exhaust gases within the tunnel working. The 328D LCR is designed for use in transport tunnels of 6.8 m (22.3 ft) in height. With the tunneling boom in place, the machine has an operating weight of 42,540 kg (93,783 lbs), yet retains a transport height with the tunnel boom of just 3.9 m (12.8 ft). Transport width with 600 mm (23.6 in.) track shoes, is just 3.2 m (10.5 ft). On the A9 tunnel contract, the machine is being used by a consortium of Swiss and Austrian companies working for the canton of Valais? Routes Nationals Construction (RNC) department. The 31.8-km (19.7-mile) A9 Autoroute construction project will connect Sierre in the west and the town of Brig to the east. The tunnel that is bypassing the town of Visp is just one of a number along the mountainous route.

While the United States and the rest of the world struggles with record-setting oil prices Canadian oil sands producers are ramping up production to meet demand for oil while also fighting against a host of negative images. In recent months, the price of oil has skyrocketed. Most of that oil comes from Saudi Arabia. In Alberta, Canada there are unconventional oil reserves that rival those in Saudi Arabia in the vast Canadian oil sands, sometimes called the tar sands. Proponents of the oil sands say that Alberta?s oil sands can be a secure source of oil and energy for the United States for many years to come. With new mining and drilling projects, the industry has said that it could quadruple its production to nearly 4 million bbl/day by 2020. Time magazine once called the oil sands, ?Canada?s greatest buried treasure that could satisfy the world?s demand for petroleum for the next century.? So why hasn?t the United States embraced this close, politically secure source of energy? Because, getting usable fuel from the oil sands can be a dirty business, say opponents. The oil sands are a combination of clay, sand, water and bitumen. It is a heavy, black, thick oil. Oil sands can be mined and processed to extract the oil-rich bitumen, which is then refined into oil. The bitumen cannot be pumped from the ground in its natural state. Instead, tar sand deposits are mined, usually using strip mining or openpit techniques, or the oil is extracted by underground heating with additional upgrading. These methods require a huge amount of energy and water and produce a large amount of carbon emissions. Environmental groups that have long spoken out against the oil sands projects got some political backing in the United States in June when a group of mayors from large U.S. cities spoke out against the oil sands, as did presumptive Democratic candidate for U.S. president Barack Obama?s senior energy advisor. During a convention of large-city mayors in Miami, FL, Alberta?s oil sands were singled out in a nonbinding resolution calling for national guidelines to track the lifecycle impact of different types of fossil fuels. The resolution urges cities not to use unconventional sources of energy with a large carbon footprint, such as liquid coal and oil shale and oil sands.

The pig iron nugget process is gaining in importance as an alternative to the traditional blast furnace. Throughout the process, self-reducing?fluxing dried greenballs composed of iron ore concentrate, reducing-carburizing agent (coal), flux (limestone) and binder (bentonite) are heat-treated. During the heat treatment, dried greenballs are first transformed into direct reduced iron (DRI), then to transition direct reduced iron (TDRI) and finally to pig iron nuggets. The furnace temperature and/or residence time and the corresponding levels of carburization, reduction and metallization dictate these transformations. This study involved the determination of threshold furnace temperatures and residence times for completion of all of the transformation reactions and pig iron nugget production. The experiments involved the heat treatment of self-reducing?fluxing dried greenballs at various furnace temperatures and residence times. Interlocking H sections with deep webs and high section modulus are being used for cofferdams and shore enclosures where pressures are excessive. The H sections can be as much as a meter deep; they can be used as continuous interlocked wall. A steel saving alternate is spacing the H and driving deep for stability then filling between with shorter interlocking sheet piles. Templates provide for exact positioning.
