The Buchans mining district is located roughly at the center of the island of Newfoundland and contains some 18 separate mineral deposits. The first of these deposits was discovered in 1905, the latest discovery having been made in 1979. To the present (1983), some 16 Mt (17.7 million st) grading 1.33% Cu, 7.5% Pb, 14.5% Zn, 115 g/ t (3.7 oz per ton) Ag, and 1.4 g/t (0.04 oz per ton) Au have been mined. Mining operations are now largely terminated, but a few hundred thousand tons of economically marginal reserves may be mined in a salvage operation. The Geological Association of Canada Special Paper No. 22, "The Buchans Orebodies, 50 years of Mining and Exploration," contains papers which describe the history, geology, and the application of evolving geological concepts in exploration. Papers by Neary, Swanson, and Thurlow and Swanson in that volume are topical to the present discussion. Successful exploration techniques at Buchans included physical prospecting, utilization of the state-of-the-art geophysical techniques, saturation diamond drilling which was made possible by the high gross value of the existing ore, and, since 1955, diamond drilling directed by fairly well understood geological parameters. The record of discovery started in 1905 when the Buchans River deposit was found by Matty Mitchell, a prospector employed by the Anglo- Newfoundland Development Co., a British company which owned mineral rights over a very large area in the Red Indian Lake-Exploits River drainage system.

Gentlemen and guests of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute: This is the thirty-second regular meeting of our Institute, and rather than try to make some extemporaneous remarks, I thought it best to write them out, so I could in that way give them to you, and probably give you a new thought for the future conduct of our Institute. The thirty-first regular meeting of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute was held in Salt Lake City, June 22, 23, and 24, 1932, and due to rapidly changing conditions in the coal industry, subsequent meetings have been postponed from time to time, as many of our members and our Secretary have been tied up with code and labor matters. Since our last meeting, at which was discussed problems of vital interest to all of us, especially the production and marketing of coal safely and economically, and the stabilization of our industry, which has already suffered two years of deplorable conditions, almost two more years have been added to the record, but during the past six months miracles have happened, and an industry which formerly was unable to govern itself, has now, through the aid of our Government, at least learned how to make a proper start in that direction. Whether we like it or not, and whether or not the things being done are in agreement with our various political beliefs, without doubt, we are in a much better position today than prior to this transformation. However, it is a pleasure to all of us to note that safety has not been lost sight of in the interim, and without doubt, as later papers and statistics will substantiate, the period since our last regular meeting has probably shown the most remarkable safety achievement of any period in recent history.

Many Americans have seen Greenland while flying over it on their way to or from Europe. Few have visited this largest island in the world. Portions of the 20 percent of the territory that are not ice-covered are highly mineralized. Greenland could become very productive if the present interest in exploration increases. The people and Greenland’s history The population of Greenland is 57,000. Twenty percent are Europeans, mainly of Danish decent, while 80percent are native Greenlandic or mixed Greenlandic-European. The native population is the same as the Inuit of the Canadian Arctic. They speak the same language.

The question of the desirability of recovering cullet from MSW in order to recycle it into the manufacturing of glass containers remains a controversial one. The main factors appear to be: 1. The position of the Glass Container Manufacturers Institute (GCMI), as the trade association for most container manufacturers, is that post-consumer cullet is a vital source of raw material. Present requirements are for: a) Flint cullet b) Non-flint cullet of known mix proportions c) Mixed unsorted cullet of known mix propertions c) Mixed or non-flint cullet of unknown mix proportions. A market balance for these products exists, and this might somewhat limit the outlets for (b), (c) and (d), or severely limit the outlet for (d) alone. 2. The color specifications are rather strict. With cullet admixtures of 20% of the melt or more, and the use of decolorisers in a flint furnace discouraged because their action is reducing in a process which requires an oxidising environment, color contamination in a flint furnace is serious.. For amber and green furnaces (reducing) it is less serious, but in order that the quantity of decolorisers may be controlled, the color balance (as a measure of the Fe and Cr content) of the admixtured cullet should be known. 3. Why not simply color analyze, either by a continuous on-stream or off-stream: photo-electronic analysis, or by systematic batch sampling (with some kind off electronic surveillance of the mainstream) and just send mixed, color measured cullet to only amber and green furnaces? The flint would-be simply included in the mix. This is probably technically feasible, but is subject to the market limitations noted in point1.

VOLUME III The objective of Volume III of this report is to provide a concise review of six major types of legal constraints, controls, and regulations on surface coal mining in the United States, as of January, 1976. At the same time, an attempt is made to format the details of federal and state exploration, mining, and reclamation regulations such that point-by-point comparisons can be made and updated as revisions occur. Thus, Volume III should provide both an executive overview and a user's manual of legal controls of surface coal mining.

H ELIUM (chemical symbol: He) is a member of a family of normally gaseous elements, which, because of their zero valence and corresponding lack of chemical activity, are called the "noble" or "inert" gases. It is a monatomic element with an atomic number of 2, and it exists naturally in two stable isotopic forms-He3, with an atomic mass of 3.0170, and He4, with an atomic mass of 4.0039. With the exception of a trace (10-6 percent) of He3, all of the naturally occurring helium is He4. Two unstable isotopes-He5, with atomic mass 5.0137, and He6, with atomic mass 6.0208-are listed by various scientists, but the existence of He5 is questioned by some of them. He6 is radioactive, with a half-life of 0.8 second. Helium was discovered in 1868 in the gaseous atmosphere surrounding the sun. Although several scientists studied the solar chromosphere that year, it is generally agreed that J. Norman Lockyer of England should be credited with the discovery of helium, which he named, deriving the word from "helios," the Greek name for the sun. It was not found on earth until March 1895, when William Ramsay of London produced a small amount from a sample of cleveite, a uranium-bearing mineral. In 1905, H. P. Cady and D. F. McFarland of Kansas found helium in natural gas produced from a well near Dexter, Kans., and for the first time a large source of helium became available.

The productive potential of the Nation's principal active and inactive silver mining districts has been evaluated, using 1964 economic conditions and assumed silver prices ranging up to $3 per ounce. On this basis, the United States has an estimated 5 billion ounces of unmined silver, excluding minor byproduct silver in gold deposits. Approximately 3.5 billion ounces are contained in deposits requiring higher silver prices to be economically minable, and about 1.3 billion ounces are in currently operating mines. An analysis of silver consumption trends since 1954 indicates that the free world industrial market will climb to nearly 800 million ounces annually by 1985. U.S. industrial silver consumption has been projected to increase at an annual rate of 4 percent from 1965 to 1985. Average annual increase for the remainder of the free world has been 8.1 percent since 1953; this is expected to level off with an estimated average increase of 5 percent to 1975 and 4 percent from 1976 to 1985. Foreign silver production has, in the past, exceeded consumption, but in 1960 the supply deficit was over 100 million ounces. U.S. production, also traditionally exceeding demand, was suddenly overtaken at the start of World War II. By 1964 the annual deficit, excluding coinage, was over 84 million ounces. World coinage requirements of silver are fast declining and expected to total only 25 million ounces annually by 1985. In fact, coins are already becoming major short-term source of silver to fill the large deficit between industrial demand and current production. The larger, long-term deficit (to 1985, the limit of this study) must be balanced by silver from the hoards and new production from silver deposits. Eventually all of the deficit must be met by new production or silver prices will rise until consumption is greatly curtailed. To balance free world supply and demand, it is estimated that the free world must produce an additional 85 million ounces by 1975 and 375 million ounces by 1985. The estimated proportion expected from U.S. deposits is 17 million ounces by 1975 and 74 million ounces by 1985.

Formulation and commercial utilization of solid-waste incinerator slag by-product is the focus of this paper. Particular attention is given to iron aluminosilicate melts having compositions similar to that of nature's basalt The earth?s crust can be viewed as an environmental laboratory for predicting stability of various silicates; small-scale laboratory experiments are necessary to confirm findings there from. An ideal slag consumes flux additives at acceptable cost, is compatible with furnace refractory, flows readily from the furnace, and has physical properties suitable for its commercial utilization -all within the critical constraint that the slag is environmentally stable. Examples of successful solid waste slagging practice, including tonnage, utilization and pricing, are provided from metallurgical and waste treatment operations of North America. Introduction Industrial safety professionals recognize that adequate illumination is essential to a safe and productive work environment. The need for effective, lighting in underground coal mines is even greater.1 Designing appropriate lighting systems for these mines is no easy [ ] task because of the unique environment and work procedures encountered in underground coal-mining operations. Miners must depend totally on artificial lighting systems to see. Moreover, the working face is a low-reflectivity and low-contrast environment and is continually advancing or retreating.2 Laboratory mock-ups have been a major part of the process lighting equipment manufacturers must under- go to design an underground machine-mounted lighting system. The mock-ups often have taken considerable time. Furthermore, modifications to a lighting system (using different luminaires with an existing configuration or changing a luminaire's location, orientation, etc.) could require more time with additional mock-ups and laboratory measurements. Understanding the need to improve this situation, the US Bureau of Mines has developed an alternate method for facilitating lighting system mock-ups. A PC-Program (CAP),* with the latest software technology enables users to design, alter, and evaluate under- ground machine-mounted illumination systems. Lux levels and distance are measured as the luminaire is moved incrementally through angular traverses about horizontal and vertical axes. The measurements and angles subsequently are entered into the model. From this input data, three-dimensional isolux or isofootcandle profiles are constructed for luminaires that can be placed at various locations and orientations on a mining machine. As an example, Figure 1 shows a computer display of 21.5 Ix or 2.00 fc profiles for luminaires mounted on a simulated mine-shuttle car. Using this information, the model allows the user to determine the lux level at different locations in space about the shuttle car. How the model calculates illumination During initial development of the CAP model, the isolux profile of the luminaire was determined using the inverse square law (ISL) .3 The method of gathering data comprised recording a single measurement of distance at 21.5 ± 1.21x (2.00 ±11 fc) for angular traverses following 0.09 rad (5 degree) increments. This data was then used to find the illumination in space for any other distance at a given azimuth and elevation using the ISL. Limitations, however, exist with this method.4 The main one is that the ISL assumes a luminaire is a single point source of light, so long as the distance is greater than five times the 1al;gest dimension of the luminous area of the luminaire.5 Also, by using a single measurement to calculate the illumination for a given luminaire in the CAP model a large error could result from an inaccurate measurement.

"A study has been done of the scale-up of laboratory bench-scale flotation to continuous plant circuit performance. It was found that the impellor speed and the air flow rate influenced the results and in this case extreme values of these operating variables were required in order to reproduce the plant rougher results in the laboratory. Despite the experimental uncertainty introduced by these extreme values, it was demonstrated that the plant performance could be predicted and experimentally reproduced with bench-scale tests.IntroductionThe mineral processing industry relies heavily on batch flotation testwork to design flowsheets, evaluate reagent s and compare various types of ore. The batch tests are generally regarded as being directly comparable within themselves, but quite often they relate poorly or not at all to continuous circuits. Obviously this dilemma generates considerable uncertainty with wide-ranging ramifications. One of the manifestations of this unfortunate situation is the commonly expressed opinion that ""it may work that way in the laboratory, but it will never work that way in the plant"".In a previous publication, a method was described whereby the results of batch bench-scale tests could be used to simulate a locked cycle flotation test series. The work to be described here is a continuation of that investigation with an extension to the simulation of an actual plant circuit. It would have been preferable to progress from laboratory batch data to a continuous pilot plant and then finally to a full-scale plant operation. However, because that possibility did not present itself, an attempt will be made to show that the performance of an existing plant circuit can be successfully simulated from batch data. The success of the procedure can be judged by the agreement among the plant results, a locked cycle test and the predicted results based on batch tests."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines contracted a study to determine the feasibility of water diversion and overburden dewatering for underground coal mines in the Appalachian Region. All relevant published literature pertaining to the occurrence and control of surface and groundwater in underground coal mines was reviewed and organized into a bibliography. The impacts of mine water with respect to health and safety, production, environment, and costs were assessed. Sources of water inflow into underground mines were described. A summary description and evaluation of techniques that can be used to reduce the amount of water entering underground coal mines was prepared. A review of engineering practices currently used by operating coal mines in the Appalachian region to prevent the movement of ground and surface water into active coal workings was conducted. Major emphasis was placed on the identification of the geologic and hydrologic con¬dition of the site, onsite inspection of the methods used and an evaluation of their technical and cost effectiveness.

The effects of solutes on the distribution of two-dimensional configurations of grains in zone-refined tin have been studied. When solutes with partition coefficients (ko) greater than unity are added, three-sided pains become more prevalent and the growth law changes. It is shown by electron-Probe micro-analysis that a solute buildup occurs ahead of a moving grain boundary when ko > 1. It has been found recently1, 2 that solutes with partition coefficients greater than unity have a larger retarding effect on grain growth than solutes with k, less than unity. ko is defined as the ratio of the concentration of solute in the solid to the concentration of solute in the liquid with which the solid is in equilibrium. Niessen and winegard2 have suggested that this effect is probably due to the complex shape changes which occur during the process of grain growth and that no theory based on single boundary motion3-5 can explain the results. They suggested that the dissociation of the unstable fourfold junction was delayed in alloys where ko was greater than 1 because the boundaries at the junction had to move into a region of high solute concentration. If indeed this mechanism were correct, it was felt that not only would the dissociation of fourfold junctions be affected by the solute buildup ahead of the boundaries, but the collapse of three-sided grains would be impaired. These combined effects would naturally lead to a modification in the distribution of the number of sides per grain seen on a two-dimensional section. The present investigation was undertaken to test these hypotheses by examining the grain-growth process in detail. EXPERIMENTS The Distribution of Grain Configurations in Zone-Refined Tin as Seen on a Two-Dimensional Section. Following the method of Bolling and Winegard,6 zone-refined tin was cast into button-shaped specimens and, subsequently, plastically deformed under a drop hammer at room temperature. The resulting flat coin-shaped samples were annealed at 200°C, some for 50 sec and others for 100 sec. The specimens were then examined to determine the distribution of the number of sides per grain, i.e., the num- ber of crystals adjacent to any particular grain in the section. For simplicity, the grains were classified as three-sided, four-sided, and so forth; this concept is schematically illustrated in Fig. 1. As indicated by smith,' it was necessary to examine every grain within an enclosed area to obtain a proper distribution of the relative frequency of each type. An exploratory laboratory work was carried out on microbial leaching of poor non-sulphide nickel ores, not amenable to conventional mineral processing operations. The results have shown that domestic low-grade lateritic ores of limonitic or haematitic type are amenable to bioleaching by fungal strains of Aspergillus sp and Penicillium sp. Maximum nickel and cobalt recoveries achieved were 60 per cent and 50 per cent respectively. Losses of soluble nickel in the fungal biomass were found in the range 3 - 11 per cent. Chemical analysis of the leach liquors showed the presence of significant amounts of citric, oxalic and other organic acids, indicating the role which certain metabolic products of fungal activity may play in the process. Possibilities for future investigations are discussed.

The US mining industry today is fighting for its existence. We are plagued by the shortage of materials, of equipment, of fuels, of capital, of manpower. If we solve those shortages, we are then frustrated in our attempts to open a new mine or, perish the thought, a new smelter. If we manage to make a profit, demagogues will accuse us of stealing from consumers; and, if we do not make a profit and have to shut down, the same demagogues will accuse us of creating unemployment. Meanwhile, in every aspect of our business - from research, exploration and development, to production, marketing and selling - we are hindered in every way by the bipartisan mismanagement and crippling controls of a government bureaucracy gone amok. We are fighting a war on every front. Some of you realize that ours is a war of ideas. In order to win, our industry must make its ideas heard. But to be heard, we must have something to say - which means: we must know our case logically and consistently, all the way down to essential principles. A principle is a primary truth applicable to a great number of instances. A principle is like a road map: it shows you all the possible alternatives for getting from where you are to where you want to go. Although practically everybody recognizes the usefulness of a map and the need to consult it to find the best way' to get from one city to another, most people are not as careful in charting the course of their life, or the course of their industry, or the course of their nation. And so they act blindly, at random, by the whim of the moment, and get nowhere fast.

The Belizean economy registered a modest real growth of 1.3% during 1981. The gross domestic product (GDP), based on current prim was $121 million' with an inflation-rate of 10%. The country received $19 million in economic aid during 1981. In early 1981, Belize'e four commercial banks raised the interest on deposits to 15% in an effort to curb capital outflow. During 1981, the financial situation deteriorated somewhat, particularly the balance of payments. For the year the total value of imports exceeded exports by almost $38 million, while the Government continued to maintain a fairly free trade policy. Import duties and term averaged about 8% on essential item and 40% on nonessential ones.

AN insistent and steadily growing demand is evident for the broadening of undergraduate curricula in engineering. Among suggested additions are training in public speaking, report writing, business law and contracts, accounting, finance, money and banking, scientific management, economics, social and labor problems, psychology, and ethics. The demand for these subjects comes from the older engineers and from the industries that employ our graduates. Of course, many of the men who suggest such changes are influenced largely by their personal needs and contacts, but the demand is sufficiently widespread to merit serious study by educators. In fact, many educators themselves concur in the proposals for broader training. These matters were examined intensively a few years ago in an exhaustive study of engineering education. Opinion at that time was rather strongly against any profound change. Since then, however, the whole economic system has undergone violent disruption. Even if recommendations made a few years ago were appropriate to the conditions then- obtaining, the enormously changed conditions of the present make advisable a further careful study of this problem. In recent years, mergers, to reduce costs, have sharply limited the number of engineers employed and have thereby intensified the struggle to secure positions. In this stiffer competition, engineers with the most adequate training undoubtedly fare the best.

"Abstract - Rare-element pegmatites may host several economic commodities, such as tantalum (Taoxide minerals), tin (cassiterite), lithium (ceramic-grade spodumene and petalite), and cesium (pollucite). Key geological features that are common to pegmatites in the Superior province of Ontario and Manitoba, Canada, and in other large tantalum deposits worldwide, can be used in exploration.An exploration project for rare-element pegmatites should begin with an examination of a regional geology map. Rare-element pegmatites occur along large regional-scale faults in greenschist and amphibolite facies metamorphic terranes. They are typically hosted by mafic metavolcanic or metasedimentary rocks, and are located near peraluminous granite plutons (A/CNK > 1.0). Once a peraluminous granite pluton has been identified, then the next step is to determine if the pluton is barren or fertile. Fertile granites have elevated rare element contents, Mg/Li ratio < 10, and Nb/Ta ratio < 8. They commonly contain blocky K-feldspar and green muscovite. Key fractionation indicators can be plotted on a map of the fertile granite pluton to determine the fractionation direction: presence of tourmaline, beryl, and ferrocolumbite; Mn content in garnet; Rb content in bulk K-feldspar; and Mg/Li and Nb/Ta ratios in bulk granite samples. Pegmatite dikes with the most economic potential for Li-Cs-Ta deposits occur the greatest distance (up to 10 km) from the parent granite.Metasomatized host rocks are an indication of a nearby rare-element pegmatite. Metasomatic aureoles can be identified by their geochemistry: elevated Li, Rb, Cs, B, and F contents; and by their mineralogy: presence of tourmaline, (Rb, Cs)-enriched biotite, holmquistite, muscovite, and rarely garnet.Once a pegmatite dike has been located, the next step is to assess its potential to contain Ta mineralization. Pegmatites with the highest degree of fractionation (and thus the most economic potential for Li-Cs-Ta) contain blocky K-feldspar with >3,000 ppm Rb, K/Rb < 30, and >100 ppm Cs; and coarsegrained green muscovite with >2,000 ppm Li, >10,000 ppm Rb, >500 ppm Cs, and >65 ppm Ta. Pegmatites with Ta mineralization usually contain Li-rich minerals (e.g., spodumene, petalite, lepidolite, elbaite, amblygonite, and lithiophilite) and may contain Cs-rich minerals (e.g., pollucite, Cs-rich beryl). The ore minerals of Ta are commonly manganotantalite, manganocolumbite, wodginite, and microlite; Ta-rich cassiterite is also commonly present. Tantalum mineralization tends to occur in albitic aplite, mica-rich (lepidolite, cleavelandite ± lepidolite), and spodumene/petalite pegmatite zones."

The organic act of Congress establishing the Bureau of Mines authorized tech- nologic investigations of all phases of mining, preparation, treatment, and utilization. These investigations cover eight main fields of activ-. projects varies from time to time. The on ity. The emphase-half of the coal reservos of the world. United States These reserves are not always of the quality desired or in the place where they could best be used. It is necessary to continue research in order that increased output, greater recovery, and better quality can be main- tained under safe mining conditions. Coal comprises 98 percent of the known fuel reserves of the United States and ad eventually must take over much of the requirements now supplied by petroleum and natural gas.. The purpose of this report is to bring to the reader a resume of the work of the fiscal year. The material presented herein is based largely upon publications. In a few instances the results of research that would not otherwise be available in the immediate future are presented. For details concerning the research, it is suggested that the readers consult the publications given in the footnote references." A pressure acid leaching process has been developed for the extraction of metal values, nickel, copper, cobalt and zinc, from base metal smelter slags. The basic concept contemplates cooling the smelter slags through solidification sufficiently slowly to induce a good measure of crystallization; and subsequently, after fine grinding, to pressure leach such slags at around 250°C while applying oxygen overpressure, utilizing smelter byproduct sulphuric acid. High levels of extraction of the slags&apos; metal values are thereby achieved. It has been shown that if the same slags are quenched thereby producing an amorphous structure, the resulting metal extractions are very low. The process is applicable to smelting furnace throwaway/discard/dump slags, as well as to in-process converter slags. By extracting the bulk of the residual base metal values in the throwaway/discard/dump slags, the resulting leached residues are rendered virtually benign vis-à-vis the external environment.

"At an average of 90.3% (for the period of 1 January 2009 to 30 September 2011), Zincor’s zinc recovery was well below the industry standard of 96%. The losses through the residues, in particular the iron residue, were the biggest contributors to the overall zinc loss. It was believed that this loss could be decreased with the implementation of seed recycling. A plant trial was run to test the implementation of a seed recycle. The rate of seed addition through recycle was increased over a 4-week period. The presence of seed decreased the insoluble zinc loss by providing additional surface area for iron to precipitate onto, and reducing coating of unleached neutralising agent. The soluble zinc loss was also decreased at low and moderate seed recycle volumes. The improvement was attributed to agglomeration growth of the recycled particles, which improves the dewatering characteristics of the precipitate. In contrast, the soluble zinc loss increased at high seed recycle rates. This result was attributed to particle crowding and a low wash ratio.INTRODUCTION The Zincor refinery, which closed in December 2011, was situated just outside of Springs in the Gauteng Province of South Africa and employed the conventional Roast-Leach-Electrowin process, which accounts for 75 to 80% of the annual primary zinc production in the world. The refinery fed up to 220 000 t/a of zinc sulphide concentrate. The major portion of the raw material was sourced in Southern Africa from the Rosh Pinah and Black Mountain mines. Between 20 000 and 40 000 t/a of material was imported to make up the deficit and to improve the grade of the feed material. The iron contained in the zinc concentrates, at an average of 6.03% (for the period of 1 January 2009 to 30 September 2011), resulted in the formation of zinc ferrite during roasting, which is insoluble under atmospheric leach conditions. At Zincor, most of the zinc ferrite was dissolved in the residue treatment plant at elevated temperature and high acid strength. The leach liquor from this aggressive leach contained between 15 to 30 g/L of iron, mostly in the ferric form, and was known as the hot iron solution (HIS). The presence of iron in the liquor had an adverse effect on the zinc operation, particularly on the current efficiency in the electrowinning circuit. Therefore the iron needed complete removal."
