Delhi Australian Petroleum Ltd., acting as operator for the joint interests of Delhi and Santos Ltd., has been engaged in petroleum exploration in the western Great Artesian Basin since 1958.Extensive airborne magnetometer, gravity meter, reflection and refraction seisomograph, and surface geological surveys have been carried out. Results of the surveys have considerably altered the concepts of the geology of the area.Seven exploratory wells have been drilled in the area. Results of the drilling have established the presence in the subsurface of previously unknown Paleozoic sediments which are capable of generating hydrocarbons.Production of oil or gas has not been achieved, but each phase of the exploration programme has resulted in progressively establishing the basic conditions necessary for the discovery of commercially profitable accumulations.INTRODUCTIONDelhi Australian Petroleum Ltd. commenced operations in Australia in 1958. The development and introduction of a preventive maintenance scheme in the coke ovens department, coal preparation section, of The Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd., Newcastle steelworks, is described together with its operation and the results achieved during the first 12 months.'fhe scheme consists essentially of an engineering analysis of the plant to establish maintenance schedules, and to record the details on reference cards.Items are reviewed progressively and a weekly work schedule is prepared, from which work orders are passed on to the maintenance foremen. These foremen in turn originate action orders and issue inspection sheets as required. Results are then reported back to the maintenance planner and used to revise norms, practices, and cycles.INTRODUCTIONWhat is maintenance? This one discusses the publications issued during 1955 and in addition describes briefly the work in progress during the year. Further details on the published work may be found by referring to the publications cited in the footnotes. The Bureau continues to direct its research and technologic work on coal toward safer and more efficient mining, improved preparation, and more effective utilization, with the ultimate twin goals of promoting conservation and insuring that coal will make its maximum contribution to the Nation's industrial capacity. Significant advances toward these goals were made in 1955.

A potentiometric model study has been made of the effect of vertical fractures existing in the matrix of the reservoir on the flooding or cycling performance. Fractures can have unusual flow characteristics. Fluid entering one side of a fracture can emerge on either the same or opposite side of the fracture, depending on the particular streamline. Fracture orientation has a great influence on the sweep efficiency. However, sustained fluid injection may still permit large areas to be swept. INTRODUCTION One can find considerable information available in the literature on the effect of fractures originating at the wellbore on sweep efficiencies of water-flooding or gas cycling programs.1-5 However, there arc few, if any, quantitative data reported in the literature on the effect of vertical or horizontal fractures existing out in the reservoir matrix on secondary recovery performance. Several papers have been presented on the effect of vertical and horizontal fractures on the productivity or conductivity of waterflood and gas injection patterns, but in all cases the fractures initiated at the well and simulated commercial fractures.6,7 It is believed that natural fractures may exist out in the reservoir matrix and would effect the displacement performance. The purpose of this report was to study the effect of a few isolated vertical fractures existing out in the reservoir matrix on the performance of waterflood or gas injection patterns. DESCRIPTION AND EQUIPMENT Since the potentiometric model was described by Lee8 it has been widely used to study numerous types of fluid displacement problems. The potentio- metric model can be used for fluid displacement studies when the following assumptions are valid: (a) steady-state conditions exist; (b) the mobilicy ratio is one; and (c) the capillary and gravitational effects can be neglected. Five-spot and direct line drive square patterns were studied using a copper strip of the desired length and orientation to simulate a vertical fracture in the reservoir matrix. The 20 x 20-in. model was considered to represent only one element of an infinite array of similar patterns. DISCUSSION AND RESULTS FIVE-SPOT PATTERN — ONE FRACTURE BETWEEN INJECTION AND PRODUCING WELLS Fig. 1 shows a quadrant of a five-spot pattem with the vertical fracture existing out in the matrix along a line connecting the injection and producing wells. Length of the fracture was equal to 35.4 per cent of the distance between injection and producing wells. In this particular pattern it is noted that fluid breaks through from the injection well to the producing well when the dimensionless time is equivalent to 26.9. INTRODUCTION The Macassa Division of Lac Minerals Ltd. is a high grade gold mine that has been operating in Kirkland Lake, Ontario for the past 51 years. It produces approximately 120,000 tonnes of ore per year, averaging approximately 18.7 grams per tonne (0.45 ounzes per ton) of gold. Over the years, the ore body has been developed to a point where mining takes place below the 1,220 m (4,000 feet) elevation and 1,830 m (6,000 feet) west of the original shaft. The mine is currently serviced by two surface and two winze shafts. (Figure 1). The ore body extends below the 1,930 m (6,400 feet) Level which is the bottom of the existing mining operation. An ambitious underground exploration program has substantially increased these reserves. Concurrent with the discovery of greater reserves, has been rapidly escalating mining costs, particularly labour which constituted 66% of the total cost in 1981. These costs continued to escalate as the major proportion of mining was carried out to the west, far away from the existing hoisting systems. This required three lift hoisting for men, materials and ore. I n addition to the increased travel time and ore handling expense, increased humidity and temperature and ventilation and compressed air losses have added to the inefficiency of the operations. As a result, studies were initiated in 1980 to assess the future of the Macassa operation.

This study has appraised available deeper soil loosening equipment in the 1-4 ft. depth range, in the U.S. and abroad which has potential for Illinois prime farm-land reclamation. The appraisal was based on written and/or oral contacts with equipment manufacturers, reclamation experts, and visiting with selected equipment manufacturers. The results indicate that several manufacturers in the U.S., West Germany, and England market static and vibratory deeper soil loosening equipment which may have potential for application in Illinois. The pertinent information concerning each equipment with potential is presented in this report.

The first commercially available portable gamma ray-neutron beryllium detector, the Rerylometer, was developed by the same group that developed the first practical portable scintillation counter, the Scintillo-meter. This group includes Professor George Brownell, of the Geology Department of the University of Manitoba in winnipeg, and his associates, K. I. Roulston, R. w. Pringle, and R. L. Funt, of the Physics and Engineering Departments of the University of Manitoba. A prototype model was tested in the field by Dr. Brownell during the summer of 1958. Commercial production was undertaken shortly thereafter by Nuclear Enterprises Ltd., of Winnipeg, and a license for manufacture and distribution in the U.S. was granted to Isotopes Specialties Co., of Burbank, California, a division of Nuclear Corporation of America. Early in 1959, we were retained by the 'Mining Division of Minerva Oil Co. to Legin a search throughout North America for minable deposits of beryllium, and to train members of their permanent staff to continue the program. The project included literature sur-veys, interviews with members of various federal, state, and provincial agencies, scanning of our own collection of suites of specimens from various mineral occurrences, and the examination of deposits in the field. The value of a beryllium detector to this program was obvious and arrangements were made to procure one as soon as possible, which resulted in our obtaining and using the first instrument that was produced commercially in the U. S. In addition to the commercially available Berylometer, Mr. William Vaughan and his associates, of the U. S. Geological Survey Geophysics Division, in Denver, have developed and tested several experimental instruments based on the same principles. DETECTOR Principles The detection of beryllium is based on the fact that "hard" gamma rays (1.6 MEV and geater), such as those produced by Antimony convert ordinary beryllium (Be9) to Be8 , with the release of a neutron. The neutrons are counted by a scintillator designed to favor neutron responses while suppressing those of gamma rays. 'The instrument is completely selective for beryllium. No other element can interfere. Instrunlentation The Rerylometer itself, which is cylindrical, is about 8 inches in diameter, 13 inches high, and weighs about 11 pounds. (Figs. 1, 2). The principal components include: 1. A disc of wax to moderate (or "thermalize") neutrons. 2. A boron-enriched polyester-zinc-sulphide fluorescent screen. This material produces strong flashes when struck by thermalized neutrons but only weak flashes from gamma rays. 3. A photomultiplier tube. 4. An electronic circuit, complete with one srnall 71/2-volt dry battery. Multiple seam underground coal mining is ubiquitous in Appalachia. Many coal properties have from two to ten or more economically mineable coal seams. Because of the ability to penetrate 600-feet to 1,000-feet or deeper into the mountainside leaving panels of web pillars separated by barrier pillars, highwall mining is a hybrid between surface and underground mining. As a result, many of the ground control problems commonly associated with multiple seam underground mining exist with multiple seam highwall mining. These include: i) superjacent mines, subsidence and caving propagating to overlying seams and ii) mines, pooled water and the potential for inundation resulting from a iii) breakthrough between an active highwall mine and abandoned underground mines in the same or superjacent seams, the presence of overlying or underlying mine workings where iv) pillar columnization in the active mine is not possible, and v) the question of whether to mine ?top-down? or ?bottom-up.? Case histories are presented from southeast Ohio where the Middle Kittanning No. 6 and Lower Kittanning No. 5 seams are successfully highwall mined with 20-feet to 40-feet of largely shale interburden. A highwall miner was caught in a highwall collapse in the Middle Kittanning No. 6 seam when it was overmining auger workings in the Lower Kittanning No. 5 seam. Multiple seam interaction caused by the overmining transferred overburden stress onto the Lower Kittanning No. 5 seam. The overburden concentrated through web pillars initiated auger web pillar failure, resulting in roof collapse and subsidence in the Lower Kittanning No. 5 seam that propagated up to the Middle Kittanning No. 6 seam. A second case history involves multiple seam highwall mining in southeast Kentucky. The A3 Rider, A3, B2, and C1 seams are being highwall mined around abandoned underground mines in the A3 and B2 seams and augering in the A3 Rider. Because of spoil storage constraints for the surface contour mines, the highwall miner follows the active pits in each seam so a standard sequence of ?top-down? or ?bottom-up mining does not exist. The planning and engineering design considerations associated with each case history is presented along with geotechnical information. In the case of the highwall collapse a back analysis is presented of the stability and safety factors for the auger webs, highwall miner web pillars, and barrier pillars.

The evaluation of earthquake-induced liquefaction has become a routine part of geotechnical engineering design. For a given project, if an analysis identifies a potential for liquefaction and the consequences of liquefaction are deemed unacceptable, then some form of hazard mitigation is required. Mitigation efforts may consist of removing the liquefiable soils, bypassing the liquefiable soils with deep foundations, structurally accommodating the deformations or strength loss caused by liquefaction, or preventing the onset of liquefaction through ground improvement. The fundamental ground improvement mechanisms for liquefaction mitigation include densification, drainage, and reinforcement. When evaluating, recommending and specifying various ground improvement methods for liquefaction mitigation, practitioners should understand the fundamental mechanics involved and applicability and limitations of the various methods. The DFI Ground Improvement Committee offers a review of the fundamental mechanics and commentary on the applicability and limitations of each method to provide clarity and guidance on the issues related to ground improvement for liquefaction mitigation.

The use of stable isotopic measurements as a technique for elucidating the origin and history of the water in hydrothermal fluids is relatively new. Recent studies have emphasised the importance of meteoric water in the formation of many hydrothermal ore deposits including many epithermal gold-base metal deposits which occur in faulted volcanic terrane. Other vein-type gold ores are believed to have formed from fluids of magmatic or metamorphic origin and exhibit characteristic d180 values. These values also give information regarding temperatures and the degree of equilibrium. Preliminary oxygen data for some important gold deposits of eastern Australia are evaluated in the context of styles of mineralisation.

The Statnamic loading test is a new and innovative method for testing deep foundations. The test is relatively inexpensive, quick, easily mobilized, provides for direct measurement of applied load and corresponding displacement, and is capable of very high loading capacities. The long duration of the applied loading, as compared to a dynamic loading test, allows for a straightforward determination of the static behaviour of the foundation tested. A new method of analysis of the Statnamic loading test, the Equilibrium Point Method, is presented. A description is given of the pile-soil model and a demonstration of how the static load-displacement behaviour of deep foundations may be predicted from the Statnamic loading test data. The Equilibrium Point Method of analysis is applied to three types of deep foundations in soils which respond differently to fast loading rates. These case histories, from Canada and the United States, include data from static loading tests for direct comparison, and demonstrate the ability of the Equilibrium Point Method to predict static behaviour of the deep foundations.

A batch incubation experiment has been carried out to investigate the optimal condition for the microbial remediation of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) in soils contaminated by chromate ore processing residue at Hunan Iron-Alloy Factory in China. The optimal condition was obtained by comparing the remediation efficiency of Cr (VI) by indigenous bacteria under different culture media, the quantity of nutrient sources, the pH and the temperature. The results indicated that glucose and yeast extract was the optimal component of culture medium and the quantities of the above components were 8 g L-1 and 13 g L-1, respectively. The optimal temperature and pH value were 30_ and 10.0, respectively. A bioreactor was operated under the optimal condition to evaluate the efficiency of Cr(VI) remediation in the contaminated soil. The result showed that water soluble Cr(VI) in soils was reduced from 320 mg kg-1 Cr(VI) of the initial concentration to below detection limit after 30 h in a bioreactor. Thus, there is a large potential to make bioremediation for the reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) by the addition of optimal culture medium under aerobic condition.

Seam correlation in the central Rapahoe Sector (Greymouth Coalfield) can be enhanced by detailed lithostratigraphy and chronostratigraphy. Rewanui Coal Measures are overlain comformably by lacustrine, deltaic and fluvial strata, and this upper contact can be located using lithological and geophysical log character. The Cretaceous-Tertiary Boundary (KTB) occurs near the top of Rewanui Coal Measures and has been identified palynologically in 16 drillholes. The Rapahoe Sector can be subdivided into two palynostratigraphic domains which adjoin along a basement normal fault which was downthrown to the north during coal measure deposition. The KTB provides an isochronous surface which is independent of the lithostratigraphic datum. Using the KTB as a datum, the æUpperÆ, æMainÆ and æSubmainÆ seams can be reliably correlated throughout the southern and central Rapahoe Sector. Similarly, the æSubmainÆ seam can be correlated with æcÆ seam of the Strongman Mine area, though other Strongman seams are absent from the central and southern Rapahoe Sector.

INTRODUCTION Before a mine is planned in detail, a preliminary analysis is often conducted. This preplanning permits the mining engineer to make a rapid assessment as to whether or not a particular mining property warrants further consideration. In fact, a properly conducted preplanning phase can come within 10% to 20% of the actual results, thereby saving the mining engineer valuable time before committing himself to a fine-tuned analysis. The questions to be answered by mine preplanning are (1) What will be the operating conditions for the mine? and (2) How long will it take to complete the project? To answer these questions, calculations dealing with reserve estimation, production planning, man- power planning, and project scheduling are conducted. The following sections discuss these various phases of mine preplanning in greater detail. RESERVE ESTIMATION The estimation of the various characteristics of a reserve, such as quantity, grade, and thickness, is an ongoing process throughout the life of a mining venture. However, the reserve-estimation phase of mine planning is more closely associated with the preplanning phase. There are many different techniques employed in reserve estimation of solid mineral deposits; variations among them are introduced because of such considerations as ease of application or level of accuracy. In any event, each technique is developed in the following manner: (1) the mineral body is represented pictorially and then subdivided into blocks related to one or more samples of exploration data, (2) the area and volume of each block is determined, (3) the volumes are converted to representative tonnages (or, for example, grades), and (4) the results are tabulated. To illustrate this procedure, the polygonal (area-of- influence) technique will be presented due to its ease of application, flexibility in dealing with different deposits, and general acceptance. The polygonal method assumes that all characteristics of a mineral body extend halfway between a point of observation and any other point of observation. The explored portion of the mineral body is represented by polygonal prisms whose depths relate to the characteristic in question (grade, thickness, etc.) and whose plane bases relate to the area of influence of each point of observation (drill hole, etc.) as shown in Fig. 1. The polygons must be constructed in a definite order, usually clockwise and from the periphery to the center of the deposit. Table 1 can then be used to calculate the characteristics in question. Since, by definition, the polygonal method assumes that the characteristics of a mineral body extend half- way between points of observation, it becomes readily apparent that the evaluation of a vertical-drill hole exploration program requires that the sides of the polygons be formed by the intersection of perpendicular bisectors (Fig. 2). Figs. 3 and 4 show correct and incorrect construction of the polygons. The criterion for correct construction of the polygons is that all points within a particular polygon must be closer to its rallying point than those located in any other polygon. This is clearly not the case for certain points that are located in the polygon containing rallying point B in Fig. 4. Although this method can be used where the drill holes are irregularly spaced, calculations become less tedious when a square net (Fig. 5) or a chessboard (Fig. 6) grid is adopted. The numbers shown in Figs. 5 and 6 represent the relative weight for each of the shaded areas. In general, the greater the number of polygons, the more continuous the mineral body, and the more regular the grid, then the more accurate the computations will be. PRODUCTION PLANNING Before an acceptable evaluation of the production potential of a mine can be determined, a thorough exploration program should be conducted. It seems obvious that the nature and properties of the deposit and adjacent strata, the presence of impurities, and other mining conditions should be adequately determined prior to production planning and equipment selection. The lack of sufficiently detailed knowledge of the many mining parameters has led to the failure of numerous operations. For example, targeted production tonnages and equipment sizes for a coal mine are intimately related to the seam thickness. Needless to say the quality of information that is gathered from an exploration program can have a tremendous impact on the production plan. Excellent metal quality, with lower power requirement, is attained in electrorefining titanium by using internal heating of the fused-salt bath. An internal heater provides more effective heat utilization, simplifies structural components in cell design, and prolongs cell life by eliminating direct application of heat to the cell container. This Bureau of Mines report covers one phase of the research in progress at the Electrometallurgical Experiment Station at Boulder City, Nev., for improving the techniques and lowering the total power requirement for electro-refining titanium metal.

One area of study for the Coal Mine Injury Analysis project was to illustrate how loss control can be used as a foundation for mine safety training. After an initial review of the principles of loss control, the instruments often used for worker/worksite appraisal, such as incident reporting, analysis, and investigation, workplace observation, worksite inspection, and safety audits and checklists were evaluated for their effectiveness. The findings were then applied to the continuous-miner worksite at several mines to modify the techniques for use in a highly dynamic man/machine work environment. Before the information gathered from the review of the various continuous-miner worksites was presented at the annual retraining sessions at five mines, a trainability analysis procedure was developed to separate training shortcomings from those problems resulting from improper equipment design or unsatisfactory working environments. Also, several microcomputer-based training programs were developed to aid in conveying the loss-control concepts to the trainees. Finally, the results from the implementation and evaluation of the loss-control-based training programs were documented, including the complete training script for one of the case-study mines. The procedures outlined in this study will aid mine training specialists in developing focused, pro-active accident-prevention strategies and training programs that are based on sound loss-control principles.

A conventional trailing cable connection box on a continuous mining machine was modified by the addition of two innovative devices. These are a pressure vent to preclude buildup of high pressure due to an explosion in-side the enclosure, and a grommet-type cable entry to simplify and speedup cable entering procedures. The innovative devices were evaluated for eight and one-half months in a working section of an underground coal mine. Laboratory tests before and after the in-mine exposure show no measurable change in the devices. Following the favorable in-mine evaluation, technical performance criteria were defined to serve as the basis of approval for the use of the innovative devices. Additional tests to measure comparable gripping of the cable by asbestos rope, substitution rope materials and by the urethane grommet-type entry were included in this effort. Also, literature for the last 80 years was searched. Comments are provided as to how the innovative devices comply with 30 CFR Part 18.
