"This investigation consists of a numerical and physical modelling exercise on flow patterns, mixing, solid-liquid mass transfer, and slag-matte phase distribution in a 0.2-scale cold model of an industrial Peirce-Smith converter (PSC). Water, kerosene, air, and sintered benzoic acid compacts were used to simulate matte, slag, injected gas, and solid additions into the PSC. The 2D and 3D numerical simulations were carried out using volume of fluid (VOF) and realizable k-e (RKE) turbulence models to account for the multiphase and turbulence nature of the flow respectively. These models were implemented using the commercial computational fluid dynamics numerical code FLUENT.Numerical and physical simulations were able to predict, in agreement, the mixing and dispersion characteristics of the system in relation to various blowing conditions. Measurement of mass transfer indicated that fluid flow in the PSC is stratified. Blowing configurations and slag volume both had significant effects on mixing propagation, wave formation, and splashing.As a potential process alternative to increase conversion efficiency, we propose a combined blowing configuration using top lance and lateral nozzles. The numerical simulations were conducted on combined as well as lateral blowing conditions, and the results of the combined concept are encouraging."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a study to determine if commercially available automatic sprinklers could withstand the high static pressures in deep underground coal mines without leaking and if exposure to the mine environment affected their leak pressures. New sprinklers and sprinklers exposed to the mine environment were subjected to increasing pressures until leakage occurred. The average leak pressures of the new sprinklers ranged from 640 to 2,300 psig and were significantly different for sprinklers from different manufacturers and for different types of sprinklers. Different for sprinklers from different manufacturers and for different types of sprinklers. Generally, standard-response sprinklers withstood higher pressures than fast-response sprinklers. The results indicated that most commercially available sprinklers would withstand the high static pressures in deep underground coal mines; however, they would not provide the same reliability and safety factor as sprinklers used aboveground at or below their rated pressure of 175 psig. The average leak pressures of the sprinklers exposed to the mine environment ranged from 740 to 1,180 psig. The mine environment affected the ability of 66% of the sprinklers to withstand high static pressure New sprinklers were also evaluated at pressures of at least 500 psig for 30 days to determine their ability to withstand long-term exposure to high static pressures; no leakage was observed.

A multiyear, comprehensive study of flotation reagents used in phosphate beneficiation was conducted. The study involved the evaluation of pure fatty acid compounds, comparison of various anionic collectors and testing of iso-acids. Various C12 to C22 fatty acids were tested as Florida phosphate collectors. The saturated fatty acids were found to be very poor collectors when using the standard conditioning procedure, whereas the unsaturated C16 to C22 fatty acids showed fair to good phosphate collecting ability. The C18 fatty acids oleic, impure oleic and linoleic and the C20 eicosenoic acid were shown to be the best phosphate collectors. The best flotation results were obtained using Liqro GA tall oil and oleic acid. Four isostearic/iso oleic acid type fatty acid collectors were compared with a commercial grade oleic acid and with Liqro GA tall oil as phosphate collectors using standard laboratory conditioning and flotation procedures. The most selective collector evaluated was Century 1108, a high isostearic acid-type reagent. However, it was concluded that this excellent-performing reagent was too expensive for commercial use. Overall, the most promising reagent was probably Century MO-5. This collector is essentially an iso-oleic acid/stearic acid mixture (not isostearic acid), and it costs much less. This program laid a sound foundation for developing single collector, all anionic flotation processes.

To determine the retorting characteristics of a column of mine-run, ungraded oil shale ranging in size from fines to 5-ton pieces, a 150-ton batch-type retort was designed and constructed at the Bureau of Mines Laramie Energy Research Center, Laramie, Wyo. The retort vessel is 45 feet high by 11 ½ feet inside diameter, and is supported in a 95-foot-high steel superstructure. Mine-run shale from the Bureau of Mines facility near Rifle, Colo., assaying about 25 gallons of oil per ton, was used as the test shale. To date, 11 runs have been completed, and the results of the last 10 of these are reported. The effects of oxygen content of the retorting gas and the superficial gas velocity of the retorting gas on oil recovery from a column of mine-run oil shale were studied. In one run, the average particle size of the shale was substantially increased to determine its effect on oil yield. Oil recoveries ranged from a low of 39.3 to a high of 65.8 volume-percent of Fischer assay.

Manufacture of lime is one of the oldest industries. Plants are distributed widely and furnish an essential raw material for numerous commodities. Use of lime in hundreds of manufacturing and chemical processes, by the building trades, and in agriculture has created a demand for large production and has necessitated exhaustive research on methods of manufacture and uses. The bibliography of publications on lime is extensive; but, for the most part, each publication has dealt with individual operations. The purpose of this paper is to present a general picture of the industry as a whole. The abundant literature has been abstracted and quoted freely, and the National Lime Association has furnished valuable data for certain sections. Publications containing more-detailed information on the various branches of the industry are referred to in the footnotes and bibliography.

In order to deliver a quality shotcrete and concrete product underground for the extensions to the Cullinan Diamond Mine operations it was decided to develop a new, simpler concrete product to meet underground support requirements. The aim was to develop a concrete product that not only reduced costs but also met the performance criteria of the current range of concrete products used on Cullinan Diamond Mine, a 25, 45 and 60 MPa concrete and a fibre reinforced wet shotcrete. The concrete product batching and delivery system was to be from surface as opposed to the current underground batching systems. The operational principle was to include an automated surface batching plant with delivery of the concrete product to a borehole containing suspended pipelines delivering to an underground storage facility from where the product is delivered to the working area by further pumping or agicars. "The White Mountain sediment-hosted gold deposit is located in north-eastern China. Mineralisation is associated with silica–hematite–altered polymict breccias that occur within dolomite at or near the contact with overlying sandstone. Economic gold grades are controlled by the distribution of the polymict breccias and can transition rapidly to low or zero grade over short distances. This results in sharp and highly irregular ore contacts on whose accuracy proper stope design and ore control is reliant at this blasthole underground mine.Short-term planning and ore control utilise a grade control model created from infill drilling and grade control sampling (ie face and wall sampling). Typically, the grade control model was maintained by time-consuming manual editing of earlier made contacts to incorporate any new data. This approach also was quite error-prone due to: the complexity of the breccia and ore grade contacts irregularly oriented and/or insufficiently dense drill holes inconsistent incorporation of grade control sampling. These errors resulted in unplanned dilution and ore loss due to inaccurate interpretation of the ore contacts.The primary advantage to implicit geological models over conventional, manually-built wireframe models is that they can be updated very quickly and frequently. In a mine setting, the power and efficiency of using an implicit model is greatest where the use of manual inputs or editing can be minimised. Recently a workflow was set-up for the mine geology team to create an implicitly-modelled ore shape for short-term planning needs by using all data, especially all grade control samples. The resultant 3D shapes provided metre-scale accuracy and consistently reconciled complex ore geometries much faster and to a higher degree of quality relative to the wireframe model. "A mineral resource royalty is payment to the holder of mineral rights for the utilization of the mineral resource. In South Africa, this payment is made to the State as holder of the mineral rights (The Mineral and Petroleum Resources Royalty Act of 2008). The principle purpose of this research paper is to identify if the State is benefitting from the mineral resource royalty by considering its impact on seven individual Witwatersrand gold mines.For this study, a simple financial optimiser model was created in Microsoft Excel that links the ore flow, block listing and the cash flow (excluding or including the cost of the mineral resource royalty). Mixed integer linear programing (the Excel Solver function) is utilised to optimise either profit or NPV (at 9% and 12%) by adjusting the cut-off grade.The impact on each of the seven mines mine was different but overall R7.9 billion is estimated to be paid in mineral resource royalty over their expected remaining lives. Due to the cost of the mineral resource royalty and increasing the cut-off grades, the total revenue decreases by R10 billion. A significant portion of this lost revenue would have been paid to the State in the forms of other taxation including company income tax which decreases by R2.8 billion. It is recommended that an industry wide investigation be conducted to determine if the resource royalty is adding to the State’s revenue, or destroying value including premature job losses. IntroductionTaxation of mining companies has become a very topical subject in the context of the postapartheid South African economy. There have been increasing calls for equitable re-distribution of mineral asset wealth for the benefit of all South African citizens and not just to an elite few. As part of the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act (MRDPA) of 2002, the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Royalty Act of 2008 was introduced and came into effect in 2010 (South African Revenue Services, 2008). A mineral royalty is payment to the holder of mineral rights for the utilization of the mineral resource. In the case where the holder of the mineral right is the State, then this payment is made to the State (Cawood, 1999). Studies on the potential impact of the mineral resource royalty on the minerals industry have been conducted during the formulation of the Act and subesquently. These include Cawood and Macfarlane (2003), who suggested a cap of no more than 3% (Cawood and Macfarlane, 2003), as well as Cawood (2011), who predicted rising cut-off grades and thus reducing mineral reserves. In 2013, Grobler completed a Masters in the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences at the University of Pretoria and concluded that the impact of the mineral resource royalty on the economy is positive. She stated that the royalty has caused operating expenses to increase, but this does not appear to be significant. Furthermore, she stated that the royalty has not affected the way the mining industry operates (Grobler, 2014)."

ALUMINUM deoxidation equilibrium in liquid iron has been the subject of many investigations. Sawamura and Sano1 have written a critical survey of the literature on this subject and consider the data of Gokcen and chipman2 and of d'Entremont, Guernsey, and Chip-man3 to be most reliable. The present study was undertaken to check these data and extend the range of the experiments to lower temperature. The experiments consisted of equilibrating 5-lb Fe-Al melts with recrystallized alumina crucibles at 1580o + 10oC, and analyzing the solidified ingots for aluminum and oxygen. The electrolytic iron stock contained 100 ppm C, 20 ppm 0, and trace amounts of other elements.* The stock was induction-melted in an atmosphere of 5 pet H2 in argon to attain equilibrium between the melt and the crucible. The temperature was measured with a W, 3 pet Re/W, 26 pet Re thermocouple, and the equilibration time was about 4 hr. The results are plotted in Fig. 1 along with curves obtained from the data of d'Entremont et al.,3 for temperatures of 1740o and 1910°C. The present results can be seen to be consistent with the previously reported high-temperature data. The reaction under study is AI2O3 (s) = 2 Al (l) +3O [1] for which the deoxidation product is Kl =[% Al]2 [%O]3 [2] (Under the experimental conditions, Fe A12O4 is not expected to form.4) In Fig. 2, values of log Ki evaluated at 0.01 pet A1 are plotted against 1/T, using data obtained from all the investigations under consideration. The deoxidation product is plotted in Fig. 2 in lieu of the equilibrium constant (normally obtained by evaluating Ki as pet A1 — 0) because of the uncertainty involved in extrapolating to zero concentration. The difficulty in extrapolating the present data for 1580°C is apparent curvature in the log Ki vs pet Al plot. This curvature is perhaps due to the uncertainty in oxygen analysis for concentrations of 5 ppm and below. For the data of Gokeen and chipman,' the extrapolation is also difficult because of experimental scatter. The line drawn through the points plotted in Fig. 2 may be represented by the equation:

A PARTIAL phase diagram for the As-Te system is given in Hansen.' The only compound reported is As2Te3, melting at 362°C. Stoichiometric quantities of reagent-grade elements were reacted in evacuated quartz and directionally cooled. The resulting ingot consisted of very thin threadlike crystals from which only very small single-crystal fragments were isolated. A powder diffraction diagram disclosed nonisomorphism with the analogous V-VI compounds insofar as these have been reported; Sb2S3, As2S3, Bi,S,, and Bi2Te3 data in the ASTM index of powder patterns, together with the single-crystal data on Sb2Se3,2 were used for the com- parison with the observed spacings. Single-crystal data confirmed the uniqueness of the As2Te3 structure. Single-crystal Weissenberg diagrams have so far yielded the following data: As2Te3 is monoclinic, space group C-m (OkO data still lacking), a = 14.4A, b = 4.05A, C = 9.92A, ß = 97". The cell volume is about 5802. The set of isomorphous ortho-rhombic cells of Sb2Se3, Sb2S3, and Bi2S, are apparently related to As,Te, in having one lattice constant close to 4.0 and with cell volumes as large as 540A8. Assuming Z = 4 for As2Te3 also, the density is calculated as 6.1 which agrees well with a roughly determined value of 6.0. A complete structure analysis is under way.

A short history of PLATO development; as a training system is presented with reflection on the major training trends being used to improve training effectiveness. A discussion is offered to describe the benefits of using a system for individualizing instruction. An introduction; is offered showing how one can recognize' individual differences, with an explanation of how the strengths of a computer are used to deliver and manage the training. Simulations of hazardous processes are shown to be one of the most effective uses of the computer for training.

Trends in Test Filtration to Respond to Decreasing Sample Size There has been a steady decline in the quantity of samples available for testwork when developing new mining processes due to the maturing mining technology and the increasing costs of pilot testing. Larox, a supplier of filtration equipment and its co-operation partner Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT) have been actively developing new equipment, testing methodologies and tools to plan test campaigns with the objective of being able to determine the optimum filtration technology and the parameters for sizing full scale equipment with a minimum sample size. With smaller sample sizes, the test scale diminishes from pilot scale to bench scale, and the small equipment size has implications for scale-up. Redesigning the equipment to simulate full scale equipment rather than to match filtration theory has led to some interesting developments. Comparisons between bench scale equipment and production units help identify the limitations of bench scale testing. The nature of filtration is such that it is unreliable to estimate filterability theoretically, and different testing methodologies have been investigated to be able to test the feasibility of filtration from samples as small as few grams. While not optimising the filtration technology, these methodologies provide an adequate level of accuracy for scoping studies. Together with improvements in equipment, a software tool has been developed to reduce the number of tests necessary to optimise filtration technology and parameters for sizing.

Sales of diesel fuel in the United States during the post year and a half have increased greatly. In 1955 over 174 million barrels were sold of which 80 million (or 46 percent), were used by the railroads, and over 44 million barrels (25 ½ percent) of the fuel were used in trucks, busses, tractors, and heavy moving equipment. Vessels (12 percent), industry (9 ½ ), the military forces (4 ½ ), power plants (2), and oil companies (1/2 percent) account for the remainder. 2/ Dally deliveries of diesel type fuel from refineries averaged over 16,750 barrels during the first six months of 1956 in comparison with 15, 250 barrels during the corresponding period of 1955. 3/ Information on the properties of diesel fuel is very important to the petroleum industry, engine manufacturers, and consumers. To supply such information the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, under cooperative agreement, are conducting annual surveys of diesel fuel oil produced in refineries in this country.

To define the technical competence and capabilities of a nonexplosive excavation concept, the Bureau of Mines conducted reduced-scale laboratory tests of a mechanical excavation tool called a rock splitter. Hydraulically actuated splitters, capable of generating both radial and axial loads on a predrilled hole, were designed and fabricated. Through paired variable testing and drifting simulation, reduced-scale splitter performance was evaluated in concrete. Testing proved that the rock splitter is capable of excavating within the highly confined drift set-ting and that it offers a distinct advantage over splitters that can generate radial loads only.

A novel instrumentation system has been developed which enables simple, quick, and accurate measurement of vehicular dynamics within low speed ranges. The system, consisting of a microwave transceiver and microprocessor data acquisition and reduction system, measures the deceleration dynamics of low-speed mining and construction equipment. It makes the basic measurement, calculates key parameters such as average deceleration, initial velocity, stopping distance, and brake system delay time, and produces autoscaled graphs of velocity, acceleration, and displacement versus time.

The data published in this report cover only one phase of a special study of the physical and chemical properties of Alabama coals made by the Bureau of Mines. In addition to determinations of friability, the survey included determinations of grindability, B.t.u. value, end ash-fusion temperature. Assay distillation tests, both for high- and low-temperature carbonization, and proximate and ultimate analyses were made also. However, this preliminary paper is concerned only with the results of friability tests and is issued to expedite the release of this information to the public. The friability test measures the liability of a coal to break into smaller pieces when subjected to repeated handling, as occurs in the mining, preparation, and transportation operations. Friability depends on many physical characteristics of the coal that vary not only between different seams but also in the same seam. The laboratory methods of determining friability have been developed to give a practical means of estimating degradation of size. So far as is known to the authors, no data on the friability of Alabama coals have ever been published. This paper makes available for the first tine fairly comprehensive information on this subject. Because the procedure for the tumbler test for determining the friability of coal is relatively new to the coal operators, the authors have included a complete description of it in this report.
