Primary lead is produced in the United States by the pyrometallurgical smelting of lead sulfide (galena, PbS) concentrates, which poses sulfur dioxide and lead air pollution control problems. The Federal Bureau of Mines has investigated an alternative hydrometallurgy procedure that does not generate gaseous sulfur oxides and diminishes the potential for the escape of lead into the atmosphere. The procedure involves leaching galena flotation concentrates with ferric chloride (FeC13) solution to obtain lead chloride (PbC12) and elemental sulfur as expressed by the following chemical reaction: PbS + 2FeC13 ? PbC12 + 2FeCl2 + S°. At 100° C, over 99 pct of the PbS in the concentrate is converted to PbCl2 in less than 15 min. The leach solution, composed of brine (NaCl) containing slightly more than the theoretical required amount of FeC13, dissolves the PbC12 as it is formed, leaving a residue of elemental sulfur plus gangue. High-purity PbC12 (>99.9 pct) crystallizes from the leach filtrate on cooling and is electrolyzed in a low-temperature, fused-salt cell to obtain corroding-grade metal (>99.94 pct Pb). Spent leach solution (FeC12) is regenerated for further use by reaction with the chlorine obtained in the electrolysis of lead chloride. Other values, such as Ag, Cu, Zn, and S°, are recovered by additional treatment of either the leach solution or leach residue.

Various styles of gold mineralisation pose problems during sampling because of their complex gold grade distribution and presence of coarse gold. Effective sampling and sample preparation forms the basis of resource estimates. The design of a sampling and assaying protocol must be based on a thorough understanding of the mineralisation in question, which should include consideration of gold particle size and mass distribution. The proportion of coarse gold within samples has a profound effect on the requirements for sample preparation and assaying. Choice of preparation procedure and assay type is of critical importance if sampling errors are to be minimised. Traditional fire assays, using small charge sizes, often understate assays gained from large charge sizes and techniques such as screen fire assay and LeachWELL. Proper application of the Theory of Sampling reduces errors during collection, preparation and assaying. A quality control/quality assurance program must be implemented and critically assessed. A case study from the Ballarat mine is presented, which is characterised by substantial quantities of coarse-gold hosted in quartz veins. Diamond core drilling is the key input into resource delineation. A number of different sampling and assay options have been trialled over the recent project history. The current sampling protocol utilises whole drill core, using LeachWELL assays after logging and photography.CITATION:Dominy, S C, 2017. A large scale blast damage project was carried out over the past two years at INCO Ltd Manitoba Division co-funded by the Canada/Manitoba Mineral Development Agreement. The experiment was conducted at the T-3 Mine in two mining stopes with an experimental drift developed in the hanging-wall for the installation of monitoring instrumentation. The objective was to observe and subsequently to reduce ore dilution by monitoring the performance of blasts, the hanging wall movement, as well as the cavity of the open stopes.

As per most other earth science engineering problems, the underground coal geotechnical environment and the way in which roof and rib support interacts with the rock mass are complex issues. While the problem should not be oversimplified (i.e., the dominant failure mechanisms or critical data input parameters should not be ignored), without question judicious simplification is at the heart of all good engineering design. Engineers play a vital role in supplying the world with solutions and products; however it is crucial that engineers make practical and readily useable contributions. One way to ensure this is to employ simplification in the engineering process.

The results presented in this report deal with the elimination of explosion hazards of ether-oxygen mixtures by the addition of helium. The method is based upon the fact that every combustible gas, vapor, or dust will not burn or explode when the oxygen content of the mixture is reduced below certain definite values. These critical oxygen values are usually different for each combustible, varying with the percentage of the combustible present in the mixture and also with the inert gaseous material used to reduce the oxygen content of the mixture.

Seventy-nine gold deposits and prospects have been discovered in theJiamusi region of northeast China, and constitute one of the most important gold metallogenic belts in China. All these endogenic gold occurrences can be subdivided into three main deposit types: 1. porphyry related; 2. metamorphic-intrusive hosted, and 3. sediment-hosted deposit.   The first two types of gold deposit are spatially and temporally related to Mesozoic Yanshanian granitoid intrusions with hydrothermal activity channelled along crustal-scale fissures. The ultimate cause of the Yanshanian magmatism is considered to be the subduction of Pacific oceanic lithosphere beneath the Eurasian continent. In contrast, the chemical sediment-hosted deposit is typified by the Dongfengshan gold deposit, and genetically related to Proterozoic sedimentation and Mesozoic igneous activities.

Advances in inexpensive computer automation led to the development and use of a computerized ore control system at the Cyprus Copperstone Gold Mine near Parker, AZ. These new ore control practices improved accuracy, performance and productivity of the ore control effort. An automated system for data collection, including bar coding of blasthole samples, laboratory analysis, data management, grade estimation, cut delineation and ore zone stake out, plays a major role in ore control practices. This is of particular interest because of the large amount of blasthole information being processed, analyzed and reported daily. Copperstone Gold management has been progressive toward new, efficient methods regarding ore reserve estimation, long-term mine planning, short-term mine planning, ore control and surveying. Technological advances, including powerful personal computers, applicable mine planning software and surveying instrumentation, have become readily available and affordable. The computerized ore control procedures used at Copperstone include sample data collection, laboratory automation and computerized data management. These have reduced the time to complete ore control on a blast pattern by 50% to 75%. The final product - ore control - is generated in a more timely and accurate manner.

The Mouat mine, Nye, Mont., was reopened in 1953 by the American Chrome Co. under a Defense Minerals Production Administration contract. Operations were terminated in 1961 after completion of the contract. Mining methods employed during this period are described in detail, and cost data are presented by years for 1953 through 1959. Ultramafic rocks of the Stillwater complex in Montana contain the largest domestic resource of chromite, and the Mouat mine has been the largest producer. Mine reserves were estimated in 1960 to be about 4.4 million tons containing 22.5 percent Cr2O3. The chromite deposits occur as a series of overlapping bands or lenses roughly paralleling the steeply dipping layers of the complex. Only two of the chromite layers have proven to be of economic importance. One layer is 2 to 16 feet wide; the other is 3 to 8 feet wide. Shrinkage stoping was generally used throughout the mine, but various methods of ore breaking, stope drawing, chute construction, etc., were tested to improve output and lower costs. Long-hole stoping proved to have limited use. Breasting down benches, developed outward from the center of the stope with air-leg drills, was satisfactory only in wider stopes. At the close of operations, the company had standardized the use of lightweight stopers to advance a flat back by breaking from a centrally located face. Mining costs were reduced 47 percent during 7 years of operation.

Reclamation of potentially acid producing coal processing waste requires a 4-foot cover, and/or treatment to allow vegetation establishment. If not planned properly, soil covering alone does not prevent refuse acidification or formation of acid seeps. Adequate neutralization enhancement prior to soil covering can maintain an alkaline environment in the soil refuse interface and prevent acidification. Direct vegetation establishment using only limestone amendment (without soil cover) can successfully reclaim aged and weathered fine (Blurry) and coarse (gob) refuse if adequate neutralization treatment is provided for the oxidized surface zone. Acid seeps, representing an "after-the-fact" verification of an imbalance of acid-base equilibrium may also be corrected using upslope alkaline recharge techniques. Concentrated alkaline recharge pools have been constructed above previously soil covered acid gob at the Peabody Will Scarlet Mine to abate acid seeps. Preliminary monitoring results (1989-1992) from a concentrated alkaline recharge pool demonstration project in the Pit 4 area of the Will Scarlet Mine have documented a 50 to 80 percent reduction in acidity in the principal recharge pool groundwater zone. A 22% reduction in acidity has occurred in the primary seeps located downslope from the alkaline recharge pools. The initial improvements in water quality are seen as a positive indication that groundwater acidity will decrease further and amelioration of the acid seep will continue.

Sintered fly ash was shown to have promise as a modifier for poorly drained soils. Turf grown in mixtures of sintered fly ash and soil benefited from increased water-infiltration rates, greater total pore space, and higher moisture availability, The result was an improved turf stand with increased grass yield and root density.

Conventional approaches to estimating reserves and optimizing mine planning and production forecasting result in single, often biased forecasts. This is largely due to the non-linear propagation of errors in understanding orebody attributes from a limited finite number of drilling data, throughout the chain of mine planning and mining. A new mine planning paradign is considered herein to include two interacting and potentially fusing elements: stochastic simulation and stochastic optimization. These two elements provide an expanded mathematical framework that allows the modelling of orebody uncertainty and its direct integration to mine design, production planning and valuation of mining projects and operations. This stochastic framework has shown to increase the value of production schedules in the order of 25%. In addition, case studies show that stochastic optimal pit limits are about 15% larger in terms of total tonnage, compared to the conventional (deterministic) optimal pit limits. This difference extends life of mine and adds approximately 10% of net present value (NPV) to the NPV reported above from stochastic production scheduling within the conventionally optimal pit limits. Furthermore, results suggest a potential new contribution to the sustainable utilization of natural resources.

Eight interburden handling concepts are developed for multiple seam area mine stripping operations in central and western United States. They are based on data gathered and analyzed during field surveys, literature reviews and visits to state requlatory agencies in five states. It is concluded that improvement of reclamation practices through selective interburden handling techniques is possible at lower operating costs than currently incurred. Specific multiple seam mining systems are discussed in this report.

High temperatures encountered by mine rescue teams during emergency situations may cause severe physiological strain, hindering the men from carrying out rescue and recovery missions. A prototype ice-cooling garment (ICG) was developed by the Bureau of Mines to alleviate physiological strain due to heat stress. The effectiveness of the garment was tested with acclimatized and unacclimatized subjects at a typical work rate (1,200 Btu/hr) expected during rescue operations and at various hot environments (97° to 113° F dry bulb and 80° to 89° F wet bulb). During exposures with the ice cooling garment, the subjects were able to maintain a safe deep body temperature of 100.4° F or below Without the garment, the deep body temperature rose beyond values of 100.4° F, a condition considered unsafe for continuous work in hot conditions. Both heart rate and skin temperature values were lower while wearing the ICG. Subjective observation also indicated a marked benefit by wearing the ICG.

Isotope analyses distinguish biogenic sulfur ores from non-biogenic ores, but do not distinguish bioepigenetic from biosyngenetic ores. Sulfur deposits of salt dome caprocks and of bedded Permian evaporites of west Texas, however, are clearly bioepigenetic. Anhydrite, introduced by salt diapirs into geologically younger sediments, is converted biogenically to sulfur and calcite in the presence of petroleum; for example, in Challenger Knoll, a salt dome at a water depth of 3600 m in the Gulf of Mexico. Rosh Pinah Zinc Corporation (RPZC) identified implementing a Mineral Resource Management (MRM) programme at the mine as a strategic incentive. The purpose of the programme is to optimize the economic value of the RPZC mineral resource, over the total value chain of the mine, taking expected macro economic conditions into consideration as well. With Mineral Resource Management still being a relatively young drive in the mining industry, information on the concept is relatively scarce. RPZC had several successes and problems with implementing such a concept and also still has a way to go before a complete Minerals Resource Management approach is implemented at the mine and entrenched as a working culture. The purpose of this paper is to: ?define a systems approach to implementing a Mineral Resource Management programme at a base metal mine ?indicate the specific MRM approaches taken at RPZC ?indicate the expected advantages of implementing a MRM approach ?measure the actions already taken against the systematic MRM approach, and indicate the advantages already captured ?indicate the way forward taking lessons learned into consideration ?indicate proposals to implement the MRM approach in the macro mining environment in South Africa.
