This report (rind related Appendices) provides a description of the functional design specifications and related rationale for development of a training system for dragline equipment operators. Phase I activities involved a delineation and detailed analysis of specific behavioral requirements for successful dragline operation. Following the field data collection effort, job/activity/task descriptions were formulated into training requirements which can be achieved by a trainee with training hardware having specific functional capabilities. The training system analysis integrated the training requirements and the trainer functional capabilities into recommendations which configure a total training system. The objective of the training system described in this report is to provide new operators of dragline equipment with the requisite skills and knowledge to assure cost-effective development and an adequate supply of our human resources.

This Bureau of Mines study is an appraisal of the demand for platinum, should this strategic metal be used as a. catalyst in the National abatement of automobile exhaust pollution. The Clean Air Act 0f 1970, as amended, requires that automobiles produced in 1975 and thereafter be provided with antipollutive measures to control automotive exhaust emissions. The study considers the need for automobile pollution control, the methodology for such control, the annual primary (new) platinum demand for automobiles produced from 1975 to 1990, primary platinum availability, and supply-demand forecasts and outlook. The correlative demand for platinum for the production of the required unleaded gasoline is also considered. Methodology for the study included a forecast of new automobile production from 1975 to 1990, development of automobile survival and retirement data, estimates of new platinum demand under various conditions of salvage, and data on recycling the precious metal from the catalytic converters of scrapped vehicles and existing vehicles when their spent converters are exchanged for replacement units. The new platinum demand for automobile exhaust converters, based on a converter service life of 50,000 miles, is estimated to be 1.41 million troy ounces initially in 1975, rising to 1.68 million in 1980, and declining curvi-linearly to 0.94 million in 1990. The platinum demand for converter longevities other than 50,000 miles can be derived from the tabular data presented. An appendix to the report presents a comparison between longevities of 50,000 miles and 25,000 miles. The petroleum industry's demand for new platinum for the production of lead-free gasolines could total as high as 1 million troy ounces between 1972 and 1981, just for expansion of isomerization and reforming capacity, and is in addition to normal operating demand for this metal.

In the United States the performance characteristics of permissible explosives are controlled by routine tests, which include firing the explosive into a gallery filled with a methane-air mixture. These tests are made by the staff of the Explosives Division of the Bureau of Mines and, are similar, in general, to those employed in other countries. This control has helped to reduce the frequency of accidents involving the ignition of firedamp by explosives but has not clarified the basic causes, of the ignition. To advance this control and to minimize potential hazards further, this fundamental knowledge is needed. Some of the results of recent research on the causes of the ignition are described herein. NATURE OF THE PROBLEM When an explosive ignites firedamp in the gallery tests, the source of the ignition must be one or more of the emissions from the steel borehole. It has been accepted generally that these emissions are (1) particles, (2) the shock wave, and (3) hot gases and flames. Photographs show that the shock wave emerges from the borehole first, followed closely by hot gases. At first the velocities of these are high and approximately equal, but the velocity of the gases decreases more' rapidly than that of the shock wave, and by the time the reactions causing the flame are complete the shock wave travels in an otherwise undisturbed medium. The particles are originally enveloped in the hot gases but some soon begin to break through and eventually out-distance the shock wave. A elevada resistência desses aços é devida a martensita e aos finos feixes de ferrita bainítica, enquanto que a tenacidade e a ductilidade são atribuídas aos filmes finos de austenita retida presentes entre os feixes. Esses filmes contém uma maior concentração de carbono em relação aos blocos de austenita retida. Uma consequência é que estes se tornam mais estáveis mecanicamente e termicamente. Dessa forma, foi realizada a avaliação do desempenho mecânico de um aço tratado isotermicamente abaixo de Mi e revenidos a 400°C/1 h. Os resultados dos ensaios de impacto mostraram que quanto maior a fração volumétrica da austenita retida maior é a energia absorvida, independente da morfologia desse constituinte.

"Albite-rich sedimentary rocks that contain abundant Fe sulphides occur in the lower portion of the ultramafic sequence at Kambalda and their broadly antipathetic relationship to most of the nickel orebodies is well documented. These sediments generally contain less than 0.1% Ni, but nickeliferous equivalents with 0.3 to >6% Ni occur locally in close spatial association with more typical volcanic peridotite-associated massive, matrix and disseminated ores. Nickeliferous sediments have been mined at several locations at Kambalda but, collectively, they constitute less than 2% of the total Kambalda nickel reserve. The nickeliferous sediments occur both on the ultramafic-footwall basalt contact and within the lower part of the ultramafic sequence, and are usually less than 5 m thick. They are commonly finely laminated rocks with a cherty appearance, composed essentially of layers of albite+quartz±amphibole, alternating with pyrrhotite+pentlandite±pyrite layers. Some contain a minor amount of carbon. The sediments are only of ore grade (> 1% Ni) immediately adjacent to massive Fe-Ni-Cu sulphides, which are interpreted as normal magmatic ores on the basis of geochemistry and the presence of distinctive ferrochromites. The nickel content of the sediments decreases to background levels (<0.1%) within about 20 m of the massive sulphides. In most locations the massive sulphides clearly have been emplaced tectonically within or adjacent to the sediments, which are commonly highly deformed. Typical nickeliferous sediments contain about 1% Ni, 0.1% Cu, 0.1% Zn, 400 ppb Pd, <0.2 ppb Ir and 10-200 ppb Au. They have lower Ni/Cu (average 10), higher S/Ni (average 6) and higher S/Se (average 11 200) than associated massive sulphides (average 40, 4.8 and 7400, respectively). The Pd/Ir ratio of the nickeliferous sediments (typically > 1000) contrasts markedly with that of associated massive sulphides (average ca 16).The high Pd/Ir values are similar to those which have been reported for hydrothermal Fe-Ni sulphides and barren sulphidic sediments of probable volcanic exhalative origin. They preclude a direct magmatic origin for the sulphides in the nickeliferous sediments, though S/Se and S isotope data indicate a magmatic source for the sulphur. The restriction of nickeliferous sediments to within about 20 m of normal magmatic sulphides and the lack of a widespread Ni dispersion halo suggest local redistribution of originally magmatic Ni. This probably occurred by diffusion and hydrothermal mobilization during deformation and amphibolite-facies metamorphism. Although not totally ruled out, a volcanic exhalative origin for the Ni seems unlikely."

Up until 1990 CoalCorp North Island&apos;s accident record was six times that considered acceptable in those NSW operations with good accident prevention programmes. This was an obvious avoidable burden on the company in both human and cost terms. &nbsp; Late in 1989 an accident prevention programme was implemented with the objective of achieving a 50 per cent&nbsp;reduction in the lost time accident frequency rate within 12 months. The key to achieving this objective was recognised as being an attitude change in the total workforce from General Manager downward. Management commitment and action were seen to be critical to the success of the programme. &nbsp; Through very basic and simple training programmes in accident investigation, analysis and reporting, communication, on-the-job coaching and in focusing on improving supervision skills, the original objective was achieved. &nbsp; During 1991 the application of methods improvement and hazard recognition techniques are seen as the logical step to achieving a further 50 per cent&nbsp;reduction in the accident frequency rate.

"Sepiolite is a magnesium-rich, porous, and fibrous clay mineral with broad applications. These applications take advantage of sepiolite’s high specific surface area and unique nano-sized channel structure. Over the past years, numerous materials and techniques based on the structure and property of sepiolite have been developed. This article reviewed the recent achievements in developments and applications of sepiolite in environmental protection, catalysis area, and nanocomposites. The prospectives of sepiolite applications is also discussed. INTRODUCTION Sepiolite is a magnesium-rich, porous, and fibrous clay mineral. The typical chemical formula of sepiolite is Si12Mg8O30[OH]4[OH2]4·8H2O [1]. Sepiolite has a high specific surface area and nano-sized channels because of its special structure [2]. This unusual crystal structure projected onto the [001] plane is shown in Fig.1 [3]. As it can be seen, silicon and oxygen atoms make up for the tetrahedral structure and magnesium and oxygen atoms form octahedral structure, respectively. Those tetrahedral-octahedral-tetrahedral ribbons expand boundlessly in one direction, leading to the special fibrous structure of the sepiolite. Every tetrahedral-octahedral-tetrahedral ribbon is combined to the next by an inverted Si–O–Si bond, which causes an interlaced layer with a continuous tetrahedral sheet and a discontinuous octahedral sheet. Terminal MgO at the edges of the ribbons is coordinated with two structural water molecules, which can form hydrogen bonds with zeolitic water molecules that are located in the channels running parallel to the fiber axis [3,4]. The Mg2+ ions inside the channels can be exchanged with other cations in solution. Therefore, sepiolite can be used to remove metal cations from aqueous solutions [5,6].It can be seen from Figure. 1 and Table 1 [7], the unique structure endows sepiolite with a substantial surface area and nanoscale channels. Its specific surface area reaches 320 m2/g and channel dimensions up to 3.7×10.6 Å. There are three active adsorption sites on the surface of sepiolite: one is oxygen atoms of the Si-O tetrahedron. The second is the structural water molecules paired with magnesium ions at the edges of the ribbons, which can form hydrogen bond with adsorbent. The last one is the Si-OH groups due to the breaks of the Si-O-Si bonds on the surface of Si-O tetrahedron. Thus, sepiolite has strong adsorption ability which has been widely used in environmental protection. Moreover, sepiolite has many significant features such as good mechanical and thermal stability, rheological property, porous, and easily modification, making it be a hotspot in chemical and biological researches. However, with the development of technology, broader and more advanced applications of sepiolite have been carried out in recent years. In this study, the recent achievement in sepiolite applications is summarized, the further tendency is also discussed."

This publication summarizes the in-house and contract research and development projects programed for fiscal year 1981 by the Bureau of Mines under its Minerals Environmental Technology activity. The document provides a mechanism for interested parties, including potential contractors, to gain insight into ongoing and projected work of the Bureau?s environmental research efforts. Research to identify and correct environmental problems associated with mining and metallurgical operations has long been an integral part of the Bureau&apos;s mission. The environmental research and demonstration activities of the Bureau were consolidate in 1979 with the formation of the Minerals Environmental Technology program, which is directed toward the elimination or reduction of environmental problems associated with the extraction and processing of minerals. Among the efforts underway are development of data and technology for assessing the potential environmental impact of minerals development, for monitoring minerals extraction operations, and for establishing viable reclamation requirements on abandoned mine lands; development and demonstration of technology &apos;or control of environmental disturbances during minerals extraction operations; development and demonstration of land reclamation and mine closure techniques to restore or enhance the productive use of mined lands; development of engineering techniques that incorporate state-of-the-art mining environmental technology in the design and planning of minerals extraction operations; development and demonstration of new mining systems that greatly reduce or eliminate the adverse environmental impacts of minerals extraction; and providing the technologic base for Federal, State, and local establishment of environmental standards for mining operations. Included in the minerals-processing-related work are projects to clean mineral-processing waters: demonstrate a Bureau process for scrubbing SO from powerplant stack :;as; recover dissolved minerals from process streams; stabilize discarded dusts, slags, and tailings: remove hazardous contaminates from byproduct wastes; reduce generation of waste solids; and improve metallurgical process engineering to eliminate pollution. Approximately $21 million was appropriated for this work in fiscal year 1981.

Electrochemical Behaviour of Massive Chaclopyrite Bioleached Electrodes in Presence of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and Acidithiobacillus caldus In this work, the monitoring of bacterial and chemical dissolution of massive chaclopyrite was evaluated using cyclic voltammetry (CV); the mineral surface was examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the elements were examined by Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis (EDAX). The electrolyte employed for the electrochemical tests was the medium used to bioleaching the electrodes (3.0 g/L (NH4)2+SO4, 0.5 g/L K2HPO4, 0.5 g/L MgSO4+7H2O and 0.1 g/L Ca(NO3)2).The results showed differences in voltagramms carried out by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and Acidithiobacillus caldus: In bioleached electrodes tested in the presence of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, the anodic and cathodic current signals were larger than with Acidithiobacillus caldus. The analysis of CV results allowed attributing the different peaks observed in both the direct and reverse potential scanning to the oxidation of chaclopyrite to a secondary copper mineral (bornite, chalcocite and covellite) and its reduction via different non stoichiometric copper sulphides intermediaries. Surface evidences were observed by SEM, and chemical elements evidences were also investigated by EDAX.

When the disruption of gold mining stopped the usual source of siliceous flux needed by copper smelters , sandstone copper deposits in northern Arizona offered possibilities as a source of the flux during the war emergency . The Federal Geological Survey , while making a comprehensive survey of sandstone copper deposits , investigated the Warm Springs mining district in northcentral Coconino County in August 1943. A month later , J. H. Hedges , chief of the Tucson Division , Mining Branch , Bureau of Mines , examined the operations in connection with an application for an access road . Both investigations concluded that the district , as an emergency source of copper-bearing siliceous flux , had considerable merit , provided high prices for copper continued in effect . Early in 1944 , V. M. Ryan and S. B. Atherley requested assistance from the Bureau in exploring various deposits on their property . The Bureau / drilled 152 holes , aggregating 3,756 feet , on the Petoskey and Mackin groups of claims . This report is based upon churn drilling done under contract from October 7 to November 25 , 1944 .

The morphological changes that gold undergoes during transport in gravel-bed rivers are a function of transport distance in particular, as well as bedload material, river gradient and velocity, and bed roughness. Gold size, shape and outline are modified by abrasion, flattening, folding and breakage during transport. The resultant morphological characteristics can be used to predict source types, source location and transport distance, as well as the origin and dispersal patterns of gold in ancient placers where the transport history is unknown.

"Summary: In this report the differential regulation of NF-KB and nitric oxide (NO) was investigated in the mouse macrophage cell line RAW 264.7 following exposure to a mineral dust (silica) and /or an endotoxin (Lipopolysaccharide, LPS). The results indicated that silica and LPS can significantly induce the activation of NF-KB as well as elicit enhanced production of NO in RAW 264.7 cells as part of an early inflammatory response mechanism. A 24-hour time-course study showed that NO release from these cells continued to increase following the initial stimulus by LPS or silica. In contrast, activation of NF-KB was maximal at 6 hours and then showed a steady decline to 24 hours. The production of NO was suppressed by protease inhibitor and antioxidant, both of which block the activation of NF-KB. Surprisingly, the use of an NO synthase inhibitor resulted in an enhancement of NF-JCB activation. These findings suggest that NO produced in macrophage cells in response to an inflammatory stimulus like silica or LPS my be linked to a negative feedback role on the activation of NF-KB. It is now accepted that nitric oxide (NO) plays a pivotal role in the inflammation response process when macrophage cells are activated by a pro-inflammatory stimulus (l). Production of NO is dependent on the activity of the enzyme nitric oxide synthase (NOS). Up until now, at least three distinct genes have been described which encode different isoforms of NOS. NOS has been cloned from a variety of different mammalian cells, including constitutive neuron NOS, constitutive endothelium NOS and inducible NOS (2). Macrophages appear to be the principal cellular source for the inducible form of NOS (iNOS) activated in response to an inflammatory producing event. The mechanisms subserving the regulation of the iNOS gene and NO production have been under intense investigation in recent years (3-5). The aim of this work is to investigate the control of microstructure evolution through variation of particular deformation parameters in the two-phase (intercritical) region. Niobium-microalloyed and low-carbon steels were investigated. A detailed examination of the factors affecting the ferrite microstructures of tested steels indicated that there were distinct advantages of finishing at temperatures in the austenite-ferrite region. The various results of deformation in the two-phase region are presented. Consequently, the influence of the most important process parameters on the microstructure evolution and mechanical response of the material is determined. The prime objective of the realized research work is the determination of relationship between the history of deformation and final product quality i.e. texture and mechanical properties. To reach the objective, the constitutive equations are proposed for modeling the effects of the hot-deformation process occurring in the austenite and austenite-ferrite region of low carbon and microalloyed steels on the mechanical properties of the resulting product. These models link advanced, finite element approaches simulating metal flow and heat transfer during hot-plastic deformation with constitutive equations describing microstructural processes and mechanical properties.

In 1972 about 4 million tons of ore was hoisted from eleven mines.Outokumpu Oy has gained experiences on the various aspects of on line computer control since 1968. This knowledge has been combined to develop a standard computer control package for concentrator control. Before the development of computer control package was started Outokumpu Oy had three large computer control systems. The first system was at the Pyhasalmi Concentrator, thee second at the LokkolaPlant, and the installation of the third system at the Vuonos Concentrator was just started.The characteristics of general computer software packages - both control and executive ones - were thus well-known as well as the practical usage of control theory. Furthermore Outokumpu had developed the Courier analyzer which included a so-called minicomputer. This project had given experience both 1n totally self made real tire executives and in computer hardware and peripheral d=vices. The instrumentation of the Outokumpu concentrators was designed and installed traditionally by the engineers of Outokumpu themselves."

In the past the blast-furnace industry was under the stigma of being one of the most prolific sources of killed or seriously inj ured and permanently disabled workmen of any of the industries of the country. In the popular mind, labor at blast furnaces was little less hazardous than mining, powder making, or railroad work. This impression wasbased not so much on definite knowledge of the number actnally injured and the causes of injury as on the spectacular nature of the accidents that from time to time were described in the press. As with a mine disaster or a railroad wreck so with many furnace accidents, the number fatally injured in such accidents constitutes only a minor proportion of the workmen who suffer more or less serious injuries. However, the reader of the daily paper receives a distinct impression-of frightful and sudden disaster which is apt to be associated henceforth in his mind with work at blast furnaces. It is true that in the past this impression has not been without warrant, for from the time of the advent of Mesabi ores, taller furnaces, and faster smelting, which begain in the early nineties, the newspapers have chronicled a large number of blastfurnace disasters. Blast-furnace men have never assumed to tolerate failures in construction or defective control of furnaces. But the admitted hazards of the work are many, and the slow development of improvements in the construction and control of the furnace and its auxiliaries have occasionally given rise to a tendency to accept as a part of the day's work not only the unforeseen and difficultly controlled accidents but accidents whose recurrence might be stopped by the adoption of suitable preventive measures. In the smelting of iron, even more than in many other industries, safety is inseparably related to efficiency in production, and. the accidents strictly incident to work about the furnace are proportional in some degree to the success with which obstacles to smooth working are overcome. This relation does not hold, however, in regard .to such accidents as are incident to hand labor, falls, falling and flying objects, machinery, and the use of hand tools.

This investigation by the Bureau of Mines was undertaken to develop information on the extractive metallurgy of thorite ores because potential ore bodies of this mineral have been found recently in Colorado, Idaho, and Montana. Basic information on thorite ore treatment that would be useful in appraising the potential of these and other domestic thorium resources was developed. The work was done mainly on thorite ore containing 3.87 percent ThO2 from the Powderhorn district, Colo., and on a composite sample containing 0.52 percent ThO2 from the Wet Mountains district, Colo. Limited tests of d corroborative nature subsequently were made on a sample containing 2.30 percent ThO2 from the Lemhi Pass area on the Idaho-Montana border.

From modest beginnings in 1996, research into the mineral potential of New ZealandÆs Exclusive Economic Zone has progressed into a major multidisciplinary component of GNSÆs recently funded 6-year æMineral Wealth of NZ and its EEZÆ Programme. In excess of $7.5 M of research funding has been expended, plus $10 M leveraged via collaborations with NIWA (NZ), NOAA (USA), JAMSTEC (Japan), U. Kiel (Germany) and ANU (Australia), whose scientists have contributed hugely to research cruises, as well as subsequent analysis and publication. The 1999 NZAPLUME I cruise was the first research expedition to systematically locate, and chemically characterise, submarine hydrothermal venting associated with arc volcanoes of the southern part the Kermadec intra oceanic arc system. This was followed by the 2002 NZAPLUME II and 2004 NZAPLUME III cruises to the mid- and northern-sections of the Kermadec arc, respectively. Combined, these cruises have surveyed 1300 km of the volcanic chain (from Whakatane to Monowai), including 34 major volcanic centres. Together with concurrent surveys in the Tonga arc, this is now the longest continuous stretch of intra oceanic arc to be surveyed for hydrothermal emissions. Most of the volcanic centres are characterised by simple cones although 30 per cent contain caldera complexes, and compositions range from basalt through to rhyolite. Massive sulphide mineralisation has been recovered from several volcanic centres in the southern Kermadecs (Clark, Rumble II West and Brothers), suggesting the existence of significant Au and base metal bearing deposits along the arc front.
