INTRODUCTION Today at LKAB, the primary mining method used is sublevel caving, independent of ore-body size, shape, dip, and geographical location. The mining of small ore bodies with relatively flat dip involves a lot of develop¬ment work, a large initial investment, big dilution, and large ore losses. In 1975 serious investigations into other possible methods, especially for those small ore bodies which do not lie in direct contact with other ore bodies, began. Different methods were studied and a number of in¬teresting ideas came from Russian mines. An analysis was made of one of the proposed methods, sublevel benching, in which mining is carried out from raises, and which uses the throw from the blast to place the broken ore. However, there were reservations about working in big open rooms at great depth, and doubts about the possibility of getting acceptable drilling results in an acceptable environment from raised platforms. Testing was therefore delayed for a time. However the investigations continued and in the fall of 1976, it was decided to try vein mining in a small ore body (Indian) (see Figs. 1 and 2). MINING RESULTS The results are now available from the mining of Indian and are as follows: Ore plan area 1200 m2 Level height 50 m Ore volume 60 000 m3 Ore tonnage 270 000 t Iron content 62% Dip 0.69 rad (40°) Ore thickness 14 m Ore compressive strength 26 MPa Ore C-factor (fracture density) 0.21 Hanging wall compressive strength 28 MPa Hanging wall C-factor 0.27 About 40 000 m of the holes were drilled by ring drills with an average productivity of 85 m/shift; loading of a round (2 rows, 750 m of hole) was usually accomplished in one shift. The total ore recovery was about 270 000 t with an average iron content of 59%, and three to four shifts were required per round (4700 t) to load. The principal of "throwing" the rock during blast¬ing worked well, and no ore remains on the footwall. ROCK CONTROL Before mining commenced at Indian, it was dis¬covered that the rock strength in its vicinity was rela¬tively poor. Since the ore is flatly dipping, and mining was to take place with open rooms, the strength of the hanging wall was of great importance. A supplementary program of exploration drilling was done during the fall of 1976 in order to assess fracture spacing and rock strength from the drill cores. Results showed that the strength of the hanging wall was low because of the many fractures. A decision was made to try cable bolting of the hanging wall by extending some of the ordinary blast¬holes. Cables (20 mm diam) were grouted in these larger holes and the rest of the hole was then utilized for ordinary loading (see Fig. 2). About 100 bolts altogether were installed and, to date, only small falls have occurred and the hanging wall is holding. Its exposed area is 2100 m2 DEVELOPMENT WORK On the 350-m level, four crosscuts (two per mining room), one longitudinal drift, and two elongated drifts (one per raise) for the raise climber were developed as shown in Fig. 1. Of the 230 m of drift, 60 m were in ore and the rest in waste. For mining room A alone, a total of 115 m of drift were needed with 30 m in ore. The drift dimensions were about 4.5 X 5.5 m. In the drifting on the 300-m level, two connecting drifts were driven from one existing transport drift forward to the respective raises. The total development was 93 m, all in waste (Fig. 1). The two raises having a length of 80 m each were driven at an angle of 0.68 rad (39°) from the hori¬zontal. They were driven along the footwall contact with a separation of 30 m and had an area of 10 m2. LONG-HOLE DRILLING The drilling of long holes with the ring drilling unit began in the fall of 1977 in raise A. The equipment consisted of an Alimak raise climber, equipped with a lower platform from which the charging was done.

"A large-scale panel destress blast was fired at Brunswick mine in the fall of 1999 in order to reduce the ground stresses in a critically important neighbouring mining region. This work, sponsored by the Mining Division of CAMIRO and Brunswick mine, consisted in heavily choke-blasting — and subsequently leaving in place — a massive waste sulphide pillar in the southwest end of the 1000 m level. This paper describes the approach and design methodology used to try to maximize breakage in the rock mass in the area to destress, while minimizing damage to critical infrastructures in the vicinity. The loading operations, as well as the results of the blast — in terms of its field performances, as recorded by near-field blast vibration monitoring equipment, visual postblast assessments and measured impact on the regional stress field — are discussed as well. A brief comparison between the measured stress changes and inelastic numerical modelling of the test site is also presented.Un tir à grande échelle de relâchement des contraintes dans un pilier a été effectué à la mine Brunswick à la fin de l’automne 1999 dans le but de diminuer les contraintes de terrain dans une très importante zone de production adjascente. The Bureau of Mines conducted a brief laboratory study on the 10-mm diam Dorr-Oliver nylon cyclone to investigate (1) whether high wind speed (>300 ft/min), or sampler inlet orientation with respect to wind direction, can introduce errors when sampling respirable dust, and (2) whether any such errors can be reduced by using an inlet shield. Being preliminary in nature, the study was not structured to produce definitive results, but rather to discern likely trends and to indicate whether or not a more in-depth study of the problem is warranted. Photometric mass sensing measurements suggested that as the wind velocity increased, the cyclone sampling directly into the high-velocity airstream tended to oversample, relative to the cyclone sampling in a low-velocity airstream. Orientation of the sampler introduced measurable differences in sampling efficiency at higher wind velocities. A shield placed around the cyclone diminished the effects of wind velocity and sampler orientation on sampler performance. Results of this work offer sufficient evidence to substantiate the need for a more in-depth study.

In this method the state of an open-pit mine is represented by the number of benches that are mined in each predesigned mining phase (or pushback). Consequently, a specific mining schedule can be represented by a sequence of states which starts with the topography of the mine site and ends with the ultimate pit. For a given set of mining phases all feasible states are first generated and sequences of states are then evaluated for technical and economical feasibility. The best sequence, which gives the maximum net present value (NPV), is found by applying a dynamic programming optimisation algorithm. The algorithm also optimises the cut-off grade which satisfies the mill feed requirement for each planning period. It was found that the algorithm can be used not only for scheduling but also as an effective tool for analysing the effects of mining and milling capacities and cut-off constraints on the mining schedule and the total NPV. In 1988, the aggregate value of total world international export trade in mineral commodities was estimated at nearly $542 billion in current (1988) dollars, which was about 8.6% above the 1987 level, but still 23.7% below the record high set in 1980. Comparable comprehensive data for 1989 were not available in time for inclusion in this chapter, but 1989 returns for developed market economy countries only were 1 1.8% above those for 1988. These countries accounted for about 50% of the total mineral commodity export trade in 1988. It would be unsound to utilize the overall 11.8% growth rate for mineral commodity export trade for these countries to extrapolate the growth in total world mineral commodity trade because these developed market economy countries account for substantially different shares of the five major mineral commodity groups listed in table 2. Specifically, developed market economy countries in 1988 accounted for 56% of world export of ore, concentrate, and scrap, 74.7% of world exports of iron and steel, 71.7% of world exports of nonferrous metals, and 57.8% of all exports of crude nonmetals, but only 26.6% of world exports of mineral fuels. Moreover, even within each of these groups, the actual product mix included in developed market economy country aggregates differ from that in developing market economy country aggregates and in centrally planned economy country aggregates. Nonetheless, an increase of 9% to 12% in the value of world mineral commodity export trade seems indicated by available returns.

Many high-grade iron ores are considered to result from the supergene enrichment of banded iron formations. The secondary processes may be related to either present-day or ancient erosion cycles and may reach a considerable depth. Other high-grade ores hosted by banded iron formations are regarded as either sedimentary or metamorphic in origin although often also subjected to the secondary processes. The evidence for this multiplicity of origins is reviewed with descriptions of selected deposits: Kedia d'Idjil and M'Haoudat in Mauritania, Bomi Hills and the Nimba Range in Liberia, the Itabira district in Minas Gerais, Brazil, and El Pao in eastern Venezuela. Emphasis is placed on the recognition of textures that show that some ores are tectonites, the precursor materials having undergone pervasive deformation accompanied by metamorphism. The question whether such ores are pre- or syntectonic is difficult to resolve, the evidence being inconclusive, but a diagenetic/early deformation origin is preferred. The possible range of origins has to be taken into account in exploration, particularly as regards the depth of drilling, and in the characterisation of ores for metallurgical use

The Bureau of Mines conducted oil-displacement tests in the laboratory with three water-in-oil and five oil-in-water emulsions that were created with ultrasonic energy at a frequency of 20 kHz and an acoustic intensity of approximately 100 watts per cm2. Emulsions of either crude oil or kerosine, brine, and 112 to 2 percent emulsifier were formed during 30 seconds of acoustic irradiation. Results indicate that ultrasonic energy induces greater and more uniform dispersion of one liquid in another in the presence of small amounts of chemi¬cal emulsifiers. When the emulsions were injected as a buffer slug before waterflooding, recovery of the oil-in-place was 8 to 22 percent greater than with conventional waterflooding in the test specimens, regardless of the con¬tinuous phase (oil or brine). The emulsions do not appear to be applicable to the Appalachian area; however, because the oilfields are too "tight," the clays in the formation remove the emulsifier from the displacing fluid, and not enough additional oil is produced, compared with recovery using conventional waterflooding, to warrant the increased operating costs.

"Simple systematic accounting that adequately records all transactions has long been regarded as essential to the welfare of any business enterprise. Some of the defects that detract from the prosperity of the slate industry are attributable to a lack of effectiveness in cost keeping. This condition has prompted the United States Bureau of Mines to make a detailed study of accounting methods for the slate industry, and to present for consideration a system of accounts, which it is believed would enable the industry to attain more economical management and operation if accepted by a fair proportion of its important units.The method of accounting presented herein has been worked out with the assistance of leading slate producers and the recommendation are tentative and are submitted in this form as a means of developing constructive criticism. Believing that cooperative effort in this, as in many other problems, will bring the most enduring benefits to the industry as a whole, the writer urges that the most earnest consideration be given to this vital problem now facing the slate industry.Grateful acknowledgment is made of the helpful assistance rendered by R. E. Eckert of the accounting firm of Eckert, Degan, and Palmer of Easton, Pa., in compiling the charts and the explanatory text. Ground movements can arise from a large number of sources and can have a significant effect on nearby piles and deep foundations. The loading of the piles by ground movements is a different mechanism to that arising from direct applied loading to the pile head, and consequently it is not generally possible to adequately analyze the effects of ground movements simply by applying some type of equivalent loading to the pile head. The main effects of ground movements are the development of additional movements, axial forces and bending moments in the piles, and thus the key design aspects are related to movements and to the structural integrity of the pile. However, the ultimate geotechnical load carrying capacity is generally not affected by the ground movements themselves. This paper will describe an approach to the analysis of ground movement effects on piles, considering axial and lateral movements separately. Some of the main features of pile response will be discussed for three specific problems involving ground movements: 1. Piles near and within embankments; 2. Piles near an excavation for a pile cap; 3. Piles subjected to seismic ground motions.

Several deposits in the Sheep Hole/Cadiz Wilderness Study Area (WSA) have small identified or potential for undiscovered gold and silver resources. One prospect area is a potential target for molybdenum. Most base and precious metals and one uranium deposit in the study area are of the fissure-filling, contact metamorphic type associated with late stage fluids of the Cretaceous Cadiz Valley batholith. Some evidence suggests limited Tertiary and Quaternary mineralization. Mineral deposits are controlled by faults, shear zones, and joints which strike northwest and dip northeast or southwest. Although undefined, calcium, sodium, lithium, and strontium brines are inferred within the study area. Some potential for oil and gas and geothermal resources is indicated by the interest private industry has shown in the eastern part of the study area. INTRODUCTION The U.S. Bureau of lines and U.S. Geological Survey conducted a mineral survey of the Sheep Hole/Cadiz Wilderness Study Area (p1. 1) which encompasses approximately 205,000 acres (83,000 ha) in south-central San Bernardino County, California. The U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the mineral resources of mines, prospects and mineralized areas; geological, geochemical, and geophysical investigations were conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey.

To better understand the load shedding and the stress transfer on coal pillars due to room-and- pillar retreat mining in deep cover panels, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a monitoring field study. Two sites, at overburden depths of 1,000 ft (304.8 m) and 1,500 ft (457.3 m), were selected in a room-and-pillar mine operating in Southern West Virginia. The deformation and stress changes in the roof and two adjacent pillars at each site were monitored during the retreat mining process. The monitoring results and field observations were used to calibrate large-scale FLAC3D models for each site. The calibrated models were used to assess different sizes of roof bolts installed in deep cover areas. INTRODUCTION Deep cover room-and-pillar retreat mining is an important emerging issue that will intensify in the future as shallower reserves are depleted (Mark, 2009; Chase et al., 2002). During pillar retreat mining, the likelihood of local and/or global instabilities increases due to elevated stress levels near the pillar line because of the abutment loading. In the last decade, approximately 31% of the room-and-pillar mining groundfall fatalities in the United States occurred during pillar retreat mining. Between 2013 and 2017, this proportion increased to 55%, of which 50% of these fatalities were due to falls of roof and rib that occurred during pillar recovery (MSHA, 2018). One interesting piece of information about pillar recovery fatalities was that the victim was nearly always under bolted roof. Sheared and broken #5 (5/8-in), fully grouted rebar bolt failure contributed to three of four fatal roof fall incidents that have occurred in deep cover retreat mines (NIOSH, 2010). This claim raised the following question at the study mine: Is it safe to use a 4-ft long #5 (5/8-in) rebar bolt grade 60 at a depth of cover more than 1,000 ft (304.8 m)? There was some concern about shear failure of the #5 (5/8-in) rebar bolt at a depth of cover over 1,000 ft (304.8 m). To answer the question and to reduce accidents and fatalities caused by ground falls due to room-and-pillar retreat mining in deep cover panels, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) monitored the roof and rib deformation and the change in vertical pressure within two adjacent pillars during pillar recovery. The study was conducted at two deep cover sites in a room-and-pillar mine located in Southern West Virginia that operates in the Lower War Eagle (LWE) seam. The monitored sites were selected at 1,000 ft (304.8 m) and 1,500 ft (457.3 m) depths of cover. In this paper, site-1 represents the monitored site at 1,000 ft (304.8 m) of cover, while site-2 represents the monitored site at 1,500 ft (457.3 m) of cover. For this study, large-scale FLAC3D numerical models were calibrated based on both field observations and instrumentation results. The calibrated models were then used to compare the ground response and the induced stresses of two pillars at instrumented sites 1 and 2. The maximum lateral displacement (roof shift) obtained from the calibrated large-scale FLAC3D models was applied to a small-scale FLAC3D bolted models, the safety factor for axial stresses of the simulated roof bolts was calculated at the deep cover sites.

"INTRODUCTION The Denver region coal field, covering an area of approximately 7,640 square miles, extends from the Wyoming State line to the middle of El Paso County, Colo. The coal in this region is subbituminous in rank. Much of it is used as domestic fuel. During the last decade the production of coal in this field has remained fairly constant at an average of 2,600,000 tons per year. This production has come from 50 to 60 mines, 88 to 90 percent of the production being from the section of the field north of Denver.According to the Standard Specifications for Classification of Coal by Bank of the American Society for Testing Materials 4/ the coals in this region are classified in the Subbituminous B and C group. On the as—mined basis, they contain about 22 percent moisture and average 9,600 B.t.u. per pound. They are noncoking and slack to a variable extent when exposed to the weather. This is characteristic of subbituminous coals."

Minerals have played a prominent role in the affairs of man and nations since time immemorial but with the advent of the industrial revolution, expanding use of the products of the mineral kingdom became synonymous with the material progress of mankind. Individuals and business groups have recognized this fact so have been aggressive in searching for and utilizing mineral resources, with notable success. Indeed, their achievements are primarily responsible for the present Machine Age. On the other hand, until recently the body politic has failed to grasp fully the essentiality of minerals although, at times, access to mineral supplies has been an important factor in the political maneuvers of nations. This chapter is concerned primarily with the broader political and economic relationships of mineral resources to the world economy, and with the internal and external actions of nations in the field of minerals. Many factors that condition the mineral economy of regions and the world as a whole, influence the internal and external affairs of individual nations. The more important of these are: 1. The nature of man's dependence on minerals. 2. The problems resulting from the unique characteristics of mineral occurrence. 3. Geopolitical concepts. 4. Minerals and world power. Actions of individual nations affecting their mineral economy seek two basic objectives : 1. Attainment and maintenance of prosperity. 2. Military security. Other objectives may be cited but on careful analysis they become integral parts or extreme phases of the two points noted above. For example, the twentieth century aggressions of the USSR, Germany, Italy, and Japan might be considered as direct bids for world power but they also can be interpreted as exaggerated or mistaken efforts toward military security and peacetime prosperity. The International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD) is a non-governmental International Organization which provides a forum for the exchange of knowledge and experience in dam engineering. It is the world's leading professional organization dedicated to advancing the technology of dam engineering and supporting socially and environmentally responsible development and management of the world's water resources. ICOLD was founded in 1928 and has National Committees in 82 countries with approximately 7,000 individual members who are engineers, geologists and scientists from governmental and private organizations, consulting firms universities, laboratories and construction companies. Its original aim was to encourage progession in planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance of large dams and associated civil works by collecting and disseminating relevant information and by studying related technical questions. Since the late sixties, focus was put on subjects of current concern such as dam safety, monitoring of performance, reanalysis of older dams and spillways, effects of ageing and environmental impacts. More recently, additional subjects have included cost studies at the planning and construction stages, harnessing international rivers, information for the public at large, and financing.

Mention of any company or product does not constitute endorsement by NIOSH. ABSTRACT Proximity detection systems (PDSs) for mobile machines have the potential to decrease injuries and fatalities. Early adopters of the technology have identified some challenges, which presents an opportunity to explore and improve the integration of mobile PDSs in underground coal mines. The current study applied the task-technology fit framework to investigate the fit between mobile PDS technology and mining relative to health and safety, from the perspective of leaders at two coal mines. Quantitative results from the study show that mine leaders evaluated mobile PDS favorably for training and ease of use, system feedback, user authorization and experience, and less favorably for safety, compatibility, task completion, and reliability. Qualitative results reveal specific task, mine, and system characteristics that may have influenced leaders' evaluations. The study includes considerations for safe technology integration. INTRODUCTION Striking, pinning, and crushing accidents related to mobile machines continue to be a major concern in underground coal mining. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) linked 22 of the 75 underground mine fatalities reported between 2011 and 2015 to power haulage [1]. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) asserts that proximity detection systems for mobile machines (mobile PDSs) could help to prevent these types of fatal injuries [2]. Mobile PDSs use a collision avoidance technology that allows the mine to establish hazard zones and employ electromagnetic sensors to detect workers equipped with a miner-wearable component (MWC) working near these mining machines. The authors characterize a mobile PDS as an automated technology, because—in line with Lee & See’s [3] definition of automation—a mobile PDS actively “selects data, transforms information, makes decisions, or controls processes” (p. 50). When the system detects workers in the established hazard zones, it issues alerts and slows or stops the mobile machine. Even though a mobile PDS may be a viable and promising safety solution, there are still a number of questions regarding how well this automated technology will fit with mining tasks and conditions. Using a mixed-methods approach, the current study explored factors that influence the fit of mobile PDSs in the underground mining environment.

This paper investigates the effects of solids concentration and the addition of Dispersant S40 on the flowability of original and ground limestone slurries. A rotational viscometer with a concentric cylinder geometry and a controlled-stress rheometer with a cone-and-plate geometry were used to characterize the rheological behaviors of limestone slurries. The rheological behavior of original limestone slurries (<100 µm) is transformed through different types of flows with increasing solids concentration. The use of Dispersant S40 can improve the slurry flowability by decreasing viscosity and eliminating Casson yield stress. It is therefore used as a grinding aid for the wet ultrafine grinding of limestone. The rheological behaviors of ground limestone slurries vary with grinding from a starting dilatant flow-ability to a resulting pseudoplastic one with an evident Casson yield stress in combination with a thixotropic character. The appearance of pseudoplastic flowability combining thixotropy is related to the fineness of a ground product and its specific surface area, which are both correlated to solids concentration and the additive amount of Dispersant S40. In addition, the accurate rheological characterization of time-dependent fluids is dependent on the instruments used and operation conditions.
