Rhenium occurs in very small quantities (12).4 In order for the Federal Bureau of Mines to conduct an investigation of rhenium sources and methods of extraction, it was necessary to devise improved techniques for detecting and measuring minute quantities of the metal. A modification of the procedure of Malouf and White (46) was developed which can be used to detect rhenium in concentrations as small as 0.1 part per million and can be used to measure quantities of 1.0 part per million. It can be used for the analysis of siliceous and calcareous ores, of molybdenite concentrates, of fumes, of flue dusts, and of other metallurgical products. Development of the method involved devising an amine extraction procedure for separating rhenium from all interfering elements except tungsten and a selective distillation procedure for separating rhenium from tungsten. Adoption of these separation procedures permits use of large samples and precise determination of rhenium by colorimetric analysis of the thiocyanate complex of rhenium by means of a spectrophotometer.

Research programs conducted by Allis-Chalmers Corporation are showing that the most efficient energy use in crushers is achieved when the forces applied to particles undergoing breakage are increased. Laboratory bench scale tests have been developed to confirm this phenomena, which was first observed in the field using HYDROCOME crushers with automatic setting controls. A new testing machine is described and methods of maximizing such benefits are postulated. FOREWORD Allis-Chalmers Corporation was founded in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1847 as the E. P. Allis Company, which had an initial interest in manufacturing components in the grinding of flour. As such, its roots were started in reducing material size, which is covered by the generic term, comminution.

A program for the compilation of evaluated physical and chemical numerical properties data is being pursued at the National Bureau of Standards within the Office of Standard Reference Data. This program is being sponsored by the Department of Energy and managed by the Battelle Office of Nuclear Waste Isolation in Columbus, Ohio. The intent is to assemble a reliable body of numerical properties data concerning candidate mineralogical materials in which high-level radioactive wastes are to be buried. The ready accessibility of the data to site designers and the credibility achieved through the evaluative process are designed to help assess and compare the feasibility of each candidate material for use as a disposal site. Both generic and site-specific data are to be assembled. To date, generic rock salt properties have been assembled and published by the NBS as NBS Monograph 167. Details of the effort to produce this book are discussed.

"The work on the physical chemistry of steelmaking, as carried out at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines in cooperation with Carnegie Institute of Technology and, the Metallurgical Advisory Board, has covered a series of fundamental studies on the action of oxygen in liquid steel and the application of the findings to open-hearth operation. The staff has varied from 14 to 23 men per year, some of whom have been Bureau of Mines physical chemists and metallurgists, others research engineers of the Metallurgical Advisory Board, and the remainder graduate students employed as research fellows at the Carnegie Institute of Technology. The work on the laboratory studies, and particularly on slag systems, has been in charge of G. R. Fitterer, associate metallurgist, Bureau of Mines, while the plant work has been under the direction of C. F. Christopher, research engineer of the Metallurgical Advisory Board. In all, some 16 physical chemists and metallurgists and 24 research fellows have taken part in the experimental work. Advantage has been taken of the opportunity for cooperation with the University of Pittsburg to have certain phases of this program made the subject of graduate work, particularly the laboratory studies on the deoxidation of steel with manganese-silicon alloys.The general method of studying oxygen has been, first, to determine the solubility of the various oxides in liquid steel. To date the solubility of Fe0 in steel has been determined, over a wide temperature range.3 The straight-line relationship in the plot of solubility versus temperature indicated that under a slag of 100 per cent Fe0 the oxygen was present in the steel as dissolved FeO. A further conclusion drawn from this work was that the solubility of FeO in the metal was proportional at a given temperature to the mol fraction of Fe0 in the slag if the slag contained a large excess of basic constituents. This result was determined from a study of the solubility of Fe0 under slags containing lime and iron oxide in various proportions. These data have been used extensively in determining the saturation of a bath of open-hearth steel under any conditions of slag composition, and results to be given later showed that the solubility curves are consistent with the results obtained in practice."

Experiment results and operation practice on reutilizing old tailings dumped at SCIM (Shang-chang Iron Mine) of KISCO (Kunming Iron and Steel Corp.) are presented. In a production period over 30 years SCIM dumped about 8 million tons of iron ore tailings. For improving resources utilization instead of wasting, experiments on processing for reutilization of the old tailings are con-ducted. These tailings are fine size fractions of weathered iluvial ores rejected out by classification- des-liming in ore washing and dressing processes, containing TFe 21%~22% in hematite mainly and limonite occasionally. Their particle size distribution, in average, is of 72.26% minus 0.037mm and 30.88% minus 0.005mm. Existence of plenty of micro-fine particles makes the tailings refractory to process, resulting in poor metallurgy. The whole sample of the old tailings without size-classification is fed into experimental process. Slon-100 type high grads WHIMS (wet high intensity magnetic separator) with cyc-pulsing is adopted, which magnetism-focusing rod?s diameter is changed from 3mm into 2mm. Operational conditions of optimizing rougher separation tests are strengthened. An iron concentrate assaying 52.21% Fe at quantity rate of 18.39% and iron recovery of 44.40% is obtained. Operational practice shows that metallurgy and economy of the old tailings treatment are close to what achieved at experiments. It is estimated, therefore, that some 1.4 million tons of this iron concentrate may be recovered from the old tailings. This means that KISCO has moved its key one-step in re-mining and reutilizing the secondary resources, which would be a good demonstration in this industry. This is also of social and economic significance in response to China government?s request on reducing consumption of resources and establishing society with economy for achieving sustainable development.

Concentrator plants intake the ore from the mine and produce concentrates by extracting valuable minerals in a succession of process steps. Controlling the extraction process and detecting changes in the process requires updated information on a minute basis. Moreover, due to economical reasons, one must also collect metallurgical samples on a daily basis for monthly reporting.In this paper, we present how slurry samplers were installed in a Cu-Ni flotation plant to accomplish the aforementioned tasks. An on-stream elemental analyser at the plant is used for flotation process control by taking samples from selected process streams. Two process streams, the flotation feed and tail, are also equipped with metallurgical samplers. The metallurgical samplers were designed to have low head loss, be robust and easy to maintain and to collect slurry samples in a reliable way for the metallurgical accounting.Samples were collected by different sampler types and we discuss the uncertainty arising from sampling in the assays. Variographic analysis was carried out on the process data in order to find periodic components in the process, and estimate the correct number of shift sample increments and measurement error components. The metallurgical samplers were proven to be reliable devices with zero downtime and no sanding issues in the main process flows. In addition, we show that the tail measurement is the most important one for the plant recovery calculation, which emphasises the importance of the sampling accuracy in the tail stream.CITATION:Lohilahti, J, Korpela, T, Minkkinen, P and McPherson, B, 2014. The U.S. Bureau of Mines undertook a basic investigation of collimated abrasive water-jet behavior because a more complete understanding of the fundamental process may lead to further technical advances. Laboratory experiments used 2-mm water-jet nozzles and new entrainment apparatus to analyze collimated abrasive water jets operating under varied conditions. Maximum water pressure was 69 MPa to permit use of conventional hoses with a burst-to-operating-pressure ratio of 4. Nozzle and induction line pressures, abrasive induction rates, and jet reactive thrust forces were recorded for each operating condition. Average jet velocity and power were determined from component mass flow rates and reactive thrust force measurements. Relative velocity and cross-sectional distribution of abrasive particles were determined using impact analysis techniques. Other jet characteristics were determined photographically. Properties of free water jets, collimated water jets, and collimated air-water jets were determined for comparison.

Two bench scale biochemical reactors (BCRs) were operated over a period of 3 months for the removal of uranium, radium, and selenium from mining influenced water (MIW). A BCR is an anaerobic reactor comprised of organic and inorganic substrate including woodchips, straw, sawdust, and limestone. Uranium and selenium are removed in a BCR by biological reduction of oxidized species (i.e., selenite, selenate) to less soluble forms (Pahler et al. 2007, Blumenstein et al. 2008, Rutkowski et al. 2013). It is believed that radium may be removed through absorption to the biomass in the BCR. The bench scale BCRs were constructed of 6 inch PVC columns with a top to bottom flow configuration. The bench influent water consisted of three different water ratios from two adit seeps. BCR hydraulic retention times of 24 to 36 hours were targeted during the study. Influent concentrations ranged from 19 ug/L to 1.86 mg/L for dissolved uranium, 12 ug/L to 270 ug/L for dissolved selenium, and 4.9 pCi/L to 24 pCi/L for radium 226. The average and maximum dissolved uranium removal was 93.6% and 98.5% respectively, the average and maximum dissolved selenium removal was 93.3% and 98.9% respectively, and the average and maximum radium 226 removal was 89.5% and 100% respectively.

"Modern underground mining is becoming more complex and geotechnically challenging. The engineer uses numerical, analytical, and data-driven methods (empirical and/or experimental) or their combination to overcome these challenges. Each method has its advantages and disadvantages. Nevertheless, given the amount of innovation and experience involved in developing each of these techniques, it will be prudent to use all their benefits rather than favoring one technique over the other. Pillars are the most important support element in an underground mine. A holistic geo-mechanical solution needs to be determined to design mine pillars using a proper sequence and exact mix of the three methods. A combination of these methods, in sync, can encompass the several advantages of the three methods while eliminating their disadvantages. This paper presents a conceptual three-tier solution to the pillar design problem, to improve its design pedigree, using a proper combination of numerical, analytical, and data-driven methods. At the focus of this proposed method lies the Ground Reaction Curve (GRC) concept.INTRODUCTIONAlthough the stability analysis of underground excavations is a challenging problem, its understanding has improved tremendously over recent years through the use of improved tools and techniques. The trial and error method was replaced with more scientific methods like the empirical and analytical methods that are still in use today. Empirical methods were developed based on large data sets obtained from experiments and observations (e.g., coal pillar strength equations). Analytical methods were developed based on mechanical understanding of stability (e.g., safety factor for vertical pillar loading, Convergence Confinement Method). Improvement in computing power and numerical techniques led to the development of several numerical methods (e.g., finite difference, finite element) suitable for geo-mechanical analysis.Each of these methods have certain advantages and limitations. Nevertheless, the user is often puzzled over the proper method selection and over the proper sequence of using them. This exercise becomes more challenging when different methods are combined, where, for example, one has to estimate the pillar strength based on empirical equations (e.g., Mark-Bieniawski coal pillar strength equation), determine the factor of safety based on an analytical approach (e.g., tributary area load divided by pillar strength), and analyze pillar-strata interactions using numerical analysis (see Esterhuizen, Mark, and Murphy, 2010b).Challenges increase when current pillar design methods are designed as passive structures to balance the fixed dead weight of the overburden. This classic suspension design approach does not recognize the self-stabilizing capacity of the overburden (Frith and Reed, 2018). A practical solution to address these issues is the use of numerical analysis. However, one should always keep in mind that the numerical modelling approach may have certain practical limitations."

Asimismo se considera la forma de los grupos de cuerpos mineralizados, el nivel de erosión, composición química y mineralógica del hierro, los yacimientos de otras sustancias en la faja ferrífera, la estimación de las reservas, la factibilidad de la explotación de los depósitos de hierro, morfología y transporte y su viabilidad con otros proyectos mineros.

The flow of information, and consequently the decision-making along the chain of mining from exploration to beneficiation, typically occurs in a discontinuous fashion over long timespans. In addition, due to the uncertain nature of the knowledge about deposits and the inherent spatial distribution of material characteristics, actual production performance often deviates from expectations. Reconciliation exercises to adjust mineral resource and reserve models and planning assumptions are performed with timely lags of weeks, months or even years.The key concept of real-time mining promotes a change in paradigm from discontinuous intermittent process monitoring to a continuous process and quality management system in the resource extraction process. The framework includes a real-time feedback control loop that rapidly links online data acquired during extraction at the mining face, material handling and processing with a sequentially updatable resource model. This will allow near real-time optimisation of decisions related to long-term planning, short-term sequencing and production control.The proposed framework integrates the following building blocks in a holistic manner: automated sensor-based material characterisationonline machine performance measurementsunderground navigation and positioningunderground mining system simulation and optimisation of planning decisionsupdating techniques for resource/reserve models.This paper introduces the real-time mining concept and the building blocks and provides a review of the state-of-the-art. Technological readiness of necessary building blocks is assessed, and critical gaps for further technology development are identified. A risk model for assessment of the uncertainty in the forecasts of the planned profit is developed. It is based on the selling price of the metal recovered from the ore and the production per shift of the excavators. These two critical variables characterise the economic and technical aspects of the mining venture. Time-series methodology is used to describe the behaviour of the economic variable, which improves the adequacy of the modelling. A hypothetical open-pit gold mine is used to illustrate the application of the model. Results obtained show that the model is a good alternative to sensitivity analysis in taking account of the stochastic character of the price of the metal recovered from the excavated ore and the production per shift of the excavators used. The model can be extended by the inclusion of new variables that have a probabilistic nature

In studies conducted by the Bureau of Mines, two test areas were hydraulically stimulated and exposed by mining: One in the Pittsburgh coalbed at the Vesta No. 5 mine, Washington County, Pa.; and one in the Illinois No. 6 coalbed at the Inland mine, Jefferson County, Ill. Induced fractures were contained totally within the coalbed with no adverse effect on the stability of associated rock strata. Induced fractures were vertical and were propagated normal to the direction of least residual tectonic stress. Gas production was increased fivefold to twentyfold by hydraulic stimulation.

The increasing demands for petroleum and its products and the steadily increasing cost of discovering and developing new oil fields are factors that emphasize the importance of increasing the recovery of oil from known petroleum reserves. Water flooding is a valuable conservation measure, not only preventing premature abandonment of stripper leases but also reviving interest in many areas previously abandoned. The use of water flooding as a means for recovering additional oil from partly depleted oil-bearing formations was first tried in Oklahoma in 1931. Early water-flooding operations were confined to the area of shallow Bartlesville-sand formations in Nowata and Rogers Counties, where many of the projects were outstandingly successful. The results of these operations stimulated activities in other pools in Oklahoma, and by the end of 1949 water flooding had been tried in 25 of the 49 oil-producing counties in the State (fig. 1). Approximately 33 million barrels of oil, or 1,806 barrels per acre, had been recovered by December 31, 1949, from 18,221 productive acres included in the 162 active and abandoned projects in Oklahoma by injection of approximately 449 million barrels of water.

Manchas de óleo em um meio aquoso foram removidas utilizando compósitos de parafina com nanopartículas de ferritas de cobalto (CoFe2O4), níquel (NiFe2O4) e níquel-zinco (Ni0,7Zn0,3Fe2O4), nas proporções de 13,0% e 28,5% em peso. Para avaliar a eficiência da remoção, foi determinada a velocidade dos compósitos ao serem acoplados a uma mancha de óleo na superfície da água e submetidos ao campo magnético de um imã permanente. O melhor desempenho foi obtido com o compósito de parafina contendo 13,0% em peso de ferrita de níquel-zinco.

Efforts to evaluate washery performance are nearly as old as the art of coal cleaning, and in former years there was no uniformity in either the methods used or the basic terminology employed. This situation, and the con- fusion it bred, prevailed until about the time of the First International Coal Preparation Conference in 1950, Largely because of the interest of the French coal research organization Cerchar, the subject of evaluating performance was given prime importance at this conference. As a result, there is now a much greater degree of uniformity in terminology and methods of expressing cleaning results. The International Standards Organization currently is working toward international standards of terminology and methods that should improve the situation even more. The various criteria that are used to evaluate the performance of coal- cleaning equipment fall into three categories, depending upon the extent to which they are dependent on the density composition of the raw coal; some are directly dependent, others are only indirectly dependent, and still others are substantially indenpendent.

Many plants produce iron(II)/(III) waste liquors which must be treated by neutralisation and precipitation to remove the iron. Iron can be precipitated as crystalline goethite or jarosite by controlled oxidation at low pH and as magnetite by controlled oxidation at high pH, but only at elevated temperatures (>70°C). This study focuses on the characterisation and settling properties of the iron oxides produced at ambient temperatures using various neutralising agents in order to improve the performance of thickeners. It was found that two-stage addition of caustic to FeC12 solutions produced a fast settling material characterised by Mossbauer spectroscopy and XRD as maghemite and magnetite. However, lime and magnesia additions resulted in more ferrihydrite formation and much lower settling rates because of the enhanced oxidation of Fe(II) by air. Settling rates decreased significantly as the proportion of Fe(III) to Fe(II) in the liquor increased. The mechanism of iron oxide precipitation is discussed together with some reasons for the different behaviour of the neutralising agents.

Laboratory and field data for wire ropes typical of constructions used in underground mine hoisting were obtained, screened, encoded and analyzed statistically. The statistical analysis of data for hoist ropes retired from service showed that rope remaining strength (or, conversely, strength loss) can be predicted with good accuracy if several nondestructive measures of rope damage are assessed. Found to be most important was the outer-wire corrosion rating, the electromagnetic (EM) nondestructive-inspection technique used for predicting strength loss, and the rope diameter reduction. Signs of rope deterioration such as broken wires or damage were also important indicators of strength loss. Based on the results of this investigation, a number of recommendations are presented that promise to yield better rope inspection and retirement criteria which will in turn lead to improved safety and efficiency in underground mine-hoist systems.

The Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines is reviewing explosion protection methods for use in gassy coal mines. This performance criteria guideline is an evaluation of three explosion protection methods of machines electrically powered with voltages up to 15 000 volts AC. A sufficient amount of basic research has been accomplished to verify that the explosion-proof and pressurized enclosure methods can provide adequate explosion protection with the present state of the art up to 15 000 volts AC. The routine application of the potted enclosure as a stand alone protection method requires further investigation or development in order to clarify performance criteria and verification-certification requirements. An extensive literature search, a series of high voltage tests, and a design evaluation of the three explosion protection methods performed at White Sands Test Facility indicates that the explosion-proof, pressurized, and potted enclosures can all be used to enclose up to 15 000 volts AC, if the performance criteria and verification-certification requirements recommended in this guideline are implemented.

"The problem of recovering potash from the mineral polyhalite (K2SO4.MgSO4.2CaSO4.2H2O), occurring in large quantities in the salt beds of Texas and New Mexico, has been under investigation at the Nonmetallic Minerals Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines continuously since 1928. Most of the results previously obtained have been published in technical journals and in a series of Bureau of Mines Reports of Investigations.The experiments described in the present report were performed to ascertain whether a continuous countercurrent extraction of calcined polyhalite by hot water would yield satisfactory recoveries and concentrations of sium sulphate in the top liquor. Previous investigation by Storch 4 had shown that the rate of solution of uncalcined polyhalite was too slow to be of value in an industrial process, and Storch and Clarke 5 had demonstrated that calcination of the polyhalite greatly, accelerated the rate of solution in hot water, allowing most of the potassium sulphate to be readily extracted."
