"Because the operation of tethered underwater vehicles in the deep ocean or under drifting ice areas is very complicated or impossible, the application of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV) is preferred or even the only possible solution. However, this implies the possibility of a direct and real-time control over all AUV functions, which is only achievable with the availability of accurate positioning/navigation and a high-speed communication link. This paper presents a flexible bottom- or surface-based solution enabling high positioning accuracy of underwater objects (harvester, AUVs, bottom nodes); specifically, a multifunctional system that combines Ultra Short Baseline (USBL) transceivers and Long BaseLine (LBL) stations deployed at a large depth. Moreover, each baseline transponder is equipped with a high-speed communication device to provide the means for real-time AUV control based on the information about its current position, e.g. navigate it with direct commands and operating its actuators and other mechanisms. Moreover a communication link with a high data rate can provide valuable visual information from the operation area.Depending on how many nodes the LBL grid comprise has, target transponder positions can be estimated with an accuracy of several to tens of centimetres. The purpose of the paper is to present the experiments with all key elements of the multifunctional Hydro-Acoustic USBL-aided LBL Positioning and Communication System."

TRANSVERSE rupture tests have been commonly used in mechanical investigations of brittle materials. The specimens are simple, easy to prepare, and loading presents no difficulty. Owing to the complexity of stress distribution in bending1 one can determine stresses rigorously only for the elastic range. The bend-test results, however, are at times converted into tensile-strength data, determined as maximum fiber stress. The assumption is made that for small plastic deformations the linear stress-strain relation applies. This problem was experimentally investigated by Bach3 who tested cast iron in bending and in tension and found that the maximum fiber strength obtained in bending exceeded the experimental tensile strength by a factor depending on the geometry of the tested piece. The factor varied from 1.57 for a rectangular cross section to 2.12 for a circular cross section of the tested beam. Since this work was carried out 60 years ago, the cast iron used could be expected to have been highly brittle, thus the extent of plastic deformation prior to fracture very small. We have therefore carried out a number of tests on magnesium-modified cast iron with an average elongation of -5 pct. It was hoped that the data obtained from the tests would serve as a guideline for comparing data obtained in tension and bending for brittle materials. Mechanical properties were measured at room temperature on an Instron tensile machine at a crosshead speed of 0.05 in. per min. The three-point bend test employed cylindrical bars 0.20 in. in diameter with a 1.0-in. span. For the tensile test, cylindrical tensile specimens with a gage length of 0.85 in. and a diameter of 0.160 in. were used. Results are summarized in Table I. Fe-6.5wt.%Si alloy has excellent soft magnetic properties compared with conventional silicon steel. It is very brittle at room temperature due to appearance of ordered phases, like B2 and DO3. In this paper, we investigate the effect of ordering on cold workability of this alloy. Methods of rapid quenching and hot rolling were utilized. It is found that rapid quenching and proper heat treatment of the hot rolled sheet could decrease the degree of order due to the very high solidification rate and high cooling rate. The rapid quenched sheet and hot rolled sheet after proper heat treatment could be cold rolled without crack. Microstructure, phase ordering, micro hardness, and cold rolling properties were investigated by Optical Microscope, X-ray Diffraction, Micro Hardness Indenter and Four-high Mill.

PZH (Pan Zhi Hua) Iron and Steel (Group) Corporation, the biggest steel company in southwest China, has been using titanium-vanadium-magnetite as the main raw materials for blast furnace iron making processing for over 30 years. One of the problems that has a negative affect on the blast furnace operation is slag foaming. Based on the chemical components of the blast furnace slag-bearing higher TiO2, the foaming properties were studied. The TiO2content, which is calculated according to the total titanium content in all the forms of titanium compound in the slag, in this research is 30% weight per cent. Different forms of titanium compounds have different actions on the slag foaming behaviour that depends on the reduction condition in the blast furnace. The relationships among slag foaming performance and the binary alkalinity of the slag, the content of CaF2, MnO in slag, and the amount of gas injected in slag are investigated. The results show CaF2 and MnO have a stronger anti-foaming affect on the slag, even in the lower percentage. The way to measure high TiO2slag foaming performance and how to eliminate foamy slag are also discussed. Keywords: blast furnace slag bearing TiO2, foamy slag, foaming performance

It is concluded that land-based mineral resources will be adequate for most minerals in the immediate future, but in the long term more minerals will come from offshore locations. Because the oceans are international and can transport pollution, international control of offshore workings will be necessary. In the UK and similarly highly developed areas, the working of low-value bulk minerals will create increasing problems in urban development and countryside preservation. Much more information should be published on standards to be adopted and their costs, if emotional social pressures founded on ignorance are to be avoided. The Town and Country Planning Acts have greatly improved the environmental quality in Britain in relation to mineral working. In the long term conservation of some minerals in short supply may be necessary on a national or international basis. Much research is required for the determination of adequate criteria and standards for the preservation of environmental quality in the mineral industry. New local, national and international legislation will be required and the adoption of voluntary standards by trade associations should be encouraged wherever appropriate

Cameroon's mining industry continued to be dominated by crude petroleum. The value of petroleum output was estimated at $1 billion.2 The 1982 gross domestic product (GOP) was approximately $8.4 billion. During 1981, crude oil export revenues increased in value 30%, comprising approximately 56% of Cameroon's total export earnings. The 1982-87 5-year plan emphasized, hydrocarbon and agricultural development and targeted the exploitation of bauxite and clay deposits. New petroleum legislation was promulgated on November 26, 1982. Public Law No. 82-20 detailed hydrocarbon companies' obligations concerning oil and gas discoveries and exploitation. In general, the Cameroon Government has participated in joint ventures with private companies and has levied a 57.5% petroleum tax plus adjustable royalties. Exploration expenses were paid by concession holding companies, and the Government in the past has reimbursed 50% of expenses under certain conditions.

The Fort Randall Reservoir project, on the Missouri River at Pickstown, S. Dak., was designed by the Corps of Engineers and is part of the Missouri River Basin Development Program. The location of the project with respect to adjacent features is shown' in figure 1. When the project is finished, it will include a large earthwork dam and 12 circular tunnels, 8 of which will be equipped for power and 4 for flood control. Various phases of the construction have been contracted to independent companies, and at present four companies are working on different phases of the project under a rigid time schedule. Western Contracting Corp. is the contractor on stage II, earthwork; Johnson-Winston Construction Co. is the contractor for construction of the intake towers at the upstream side of the dam; McCarthy Improvement Co. has the contract for the power house and the outlet works on the downstream side; and Silas Mason Co. has the contract for driving the power and flood-control tunnels. The latter two companies use the same roads for ingress and egress to their respective work areas and the same general waste dump area. Under such circumstances, it is necessary that each company stay on a time schedule in regular sequence to avoid interference with the other.

No reator RH, a otimização do fluxo recirculatório de aço entre a câmara de vácuo e a panela é a chave para promover as reações de refino. Neste trabalho, foram utilizados água e solução de cloreto de zinco (ZnCl2) como fluido similar ao aço para investigar a taxa de circulação no modelo a frio de um reator RH em escala 1:7,5. A taxa de circulação foi determinada utilizando o método de pontes de Strain Gages. A técnica PIV foi utilizada de modo a calibrar e validar os resultados. O aumento da vazão de gás de 30l/min para 120l/min resultou na elevação da taxa de circulação para ambos os fluidos. Cálculos preliminares demonstraram que há grande diferença nas condições de arraste de escória entre os sistemas água/óleo e ZnCl2/óleo.

INTRODUCTION - DEFINITION & HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE While this symposium is concerned with comminution which, by definition, relates to all stages of size reduction of an ore body to a form suitable for mineral separation, the electrical drive aspect of the grinding section will receive most attention in contrast to the crushing, screening and materials handling elements of the process. The reason for this is that today's large mills, thirty feet diameter and upwards, present mechanical and electrical problems which require a degree of sophistication in their solution not previously required. The ability to satisfy these demands, so far as electrical technology is concerned, largely results from the development of semi-conductor devices. These can now handle typical electrical distribution power levels within remarkably s m all volumes and with high efficiency when compared with the motor-generator sets, mercury arc rectifiers, rotating amplifiers, magnetic amplifiers and vacuum tubes which were commonly used to provide speed and torque controls as recently as the early nineteen-sixties. The hardware available to the electrical engineer has changed dramatically whereby even the simplest control system formerly using hard-wired relays is now superseded by the program m able logic controller with its computer-like memory containing the sequence of operation, in other words, the software. Reverting now to the mineral process itself, it is assumed that the ore body has been mined using explosives and is delivered to the concentrating plant in its 'run of mine' form. The problem becomes one of reducing the material to a size which will permit an acceptable recovery of the mineral with the most economical use of energy. The size of 'run of mine' material will range from about minus five feet for high tonnage open pit operations to minus two feet for the smaller underground mine. The final reduction in size may range from minus ten mesh to minus two hundred mesh (exceptionally as fine as minus six hundred mesh) depending upon the concentration method and dissemination of the mineral values within the ore. There is no single circuit that satisfies all applications, but the pattern of metallurgical equipment use shown in Table 1 appears discernable from current practice, in general terms.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Southern Alps of New Zealand and the mountains of Taiwan are both young transpressive orogens characterised by rapid uplift and exhumation, high heat flow and vigorous surface processes. Comparing and contrasting the two provides an ideal framework through which to explore the structural and lithological controls on fluid and gold mobility during collisional deformation. Both have two fluid flow systems centred about their drainage divide with shallow topographically-driven meteoric water above a deeper flow system dominated by mineralising rock-exchanged fluids. Despite similar tectonic settings, the distribution of heat flow, hot springs and veins in the two orogens are different. Taiwan has higher heat flow, distributed hot springs and localised veining whereas the Southern Alps have a narrow heat flow anomaly, localised warm springs and widespread veining. We use three-dimensional numerical models to evaluate key parameters that affect fluid flow and gold mineralisation. Models show that differences in crustal strength and thickness affect the locus, scale and rate of crustal fluid flow and hence influence gold deposition at a variety of scales. We explore how surface topography can lead to localised changes in the stress state, facilitating the switching of principal stresses and hence vein orientations.CITATION:Upton, P and Craw, D, 2015. [Gypsum is one of the most important nonmetallic c minerals, as is indicated by the fact that the United States consumed approximately 3,500,000 tons of natural and calcined gypsum in 1937. The building trades were the largest users required 2,520,000 tons of calcine for production of plaster, wall board, tiles, block, and various other insulating and building materials. The glass and ceramic industries and other manufacturers required an additional 126,000 tons. The balance was used in the uncalcined condition as retarder in Portland cement and or agricultural purposes.]

In spite of this, most people (except those unfortunate enough to live in seismicallyactive areas) have probably never felt this phenomenon, or if they have, only a very few times in their entire lifetime. However, when it does happen, nothing is more frightening than the sudden shaking of the earth beneath us - after all, we think of the ground we walk on as the unyielding, solid underpinning of our existence.

A process for extracting 69 percent of the vanadium from weathered Nevada dolomitic shale containing about 1 percent V205 was developed on a laboratory scale by the Bureau of Mines. The process essentially is comprised of salt roasting, leaching with dilute sulfuric acid, solvent extraction, and precipitation of vanadium as ammonium metavanadate. Carbonaceous unweathered shale was less amenable to treatment. A preliminary cost estimate for mining and processing 1,500 tons per day of weathered shale indicated a production cost of about 1 dollar per lb of V205. Considering recent sales at nearly $1. 75 per lb of contained V205, larger scale testing to obtain more definitive process design and evaluation data may be warranted.

Over ten million pounds of explosives are used daily to blast rock in mines, quarries and construction projects throughout the United States. Despite the immense volume of explosives used, serious incidents involving the legal use of explosive materials are rare. Unfortunately, when incidents arise they are well publicized, whereas the great majority of blasting projects-even the most challenging ones—quietly occur without incident or public recognition. Although unfair, media coverage focuses on incidents and/or accidents, and as a result skews the public’s perceptions of our industry. These negative perceptions about blasting profoundly effect our work. Most apparent are the community groups who organize to fight blasting work. However, other impacts are more insidious and have long-term effects on our industry. For instance, planning engineers or government agencies often prohibit blasting to avoid the public’s adverse reaction or because of general fear of blasting impacts. Ironically, as regulations and specifications continue to curtail our industry, the net effect is an increase in the cost of rock excavation. As taxpayers, we suffer needlessly by paying more for government funded construction projects. As blasting professionals we are additionally penalized through loss of work.

By electrostatic separation, course Florida pebble phosphate, too lou-grade to find a ready market, can be upgraded to a satisfactory saleable product. Pebble running from 60 pct bone phosphate of time may be upgraded to 73 to 77 pct BPL depending on the mineralogical. structure of the pebble and the nature of the silica innpurity. High-grade concentrates from Florida pebble phosphate deposits have long been recovered by wet methods. When work was begun in the field, only the coarse pebble (generally +1 mm) was re- covered. In the 1920's a froth flotation process was developed to separate quartz from the finer phosphate fractions, but this method proved unsatisfactory for treating the intermediate fraction (—1 mm +35 mesh). Consequently various other processes were adapted, including agglomerate tabling and spiral separation of reagentized feed. Today the three processes are used—washing and screening for coarse pebble, tabling or spiraling for intermediate sizes, and flotation for —35 mesh material.

The dynamic response of a thin aluminum plate subjected to both shallow and deeper buried blast loading was studied. Using a combination of high speed stereo-vision and three dimensional digital image correlation (3D-DIC), sequential stereo images acquired every 38.25µs during blast loading were analyzed to determine full-field deformations and plate motions (displacements, velocities and accelerations, effective surface strain and effective surface strain rate). Measurements indicate that the initial sheet deformation was highly localized for both shallow and deeper blast events, with extremely high velocity and acceleration values recorded during the earliest stages of impact loading. Full field strain and strain rate data indicate that well defined strain and strain rate “maxima” are created in the plate, with the potential of affecting the dynamic plate behavior as well as it local failure.

Algumas qualidades de aço UltraBaixo Carbono têm exigido teores de fósforo cada vez mais baixos. Quando se obtém teor de fósforo fim de sopro no convertedor acima dos níveis exigidos pelo cliente, faz-se necessário realizar um retrabalho na corrida ou promover desvios, utilizando-a em aços para outras aplicações. Para reduzir ainda mais o teor de fósforo durante o vazamento do aço do convertedor para a panela desenvolveu-se uma escória sintética desfosforante a ser utilizada quando o teor de fósforo não atende ao especificado no fim de sopro. Foram comparadas corridas com utilização da escória sintética e corridas utilizando somente cal. Obteve-se um aumento de 28,2 pontos percentuais na taxa de remoção de fósforo durante o vazamento com a utilização da escória sintética. Diante dos resultados obtidos, o produto foi aprovado para utilização na Aciaria 2 da Usiminas Ipatinga
