"The ore features of Mongolian fluorspar deposits are shown in the paper. The possibilities of the technological of ore processing on the Bor-Undur combine scheme improvement are analyzed there. Some recommendations are done for scheme development: spare output technologies, the usage large-sized ore separation, flotation by columnar flotation cells, leaching and concentrate agglomeration.New evaluation and usage of mineral sources approach was developed for Mongolian fluoride ores. Why does a continuous casting mould powder, which works successfully on a particular caster with respect to semi quality, fail to perform on a caster of a similar design utilizing liquid steel from a similar route for an identical product without some tuning of its make-up and composition? In casting sequences of the same steel grade, why do some apparent random heats produce poor surface quality with respect to cracking when otherwise good surface quality is realized? The answer to these questions lies in the interaction of the mould powder, the casting hardware, and the casting process variables. Using, as examples, data collected from within Corus UK and during collaborative work on the assessment of mould powder performance and its effects on surface quality, the interaction of the mould powder, the casting hardware and the casting process variables is explored. The steelmaking route and its associated alumina load, unexpected changes to slag chemistry, infiltration of the slag into the mould strand gap, and the nature of the slag film are all shown to affect powder performance. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo realizar uma análise comparativa do comportamento de quatro metais de solda obtidos pelo processo arame tubular de forma a avaliar o efeito da relação Ni-Mn nas propriedades mecânicas. Foram soldadas juntas multipasse, com consumíveis da classe 110ksi de resistência mecânica, preaquecimento de 200°C, corrente contínua e posição plana e aporte térmico nominal de 1,2 kJ/mm. Após a soldagem, realizaram-se ensaios mecânicos e metalográficos em corpos-de-prova retirados integralmente do metal depositado, na condição de como soldado e após tratamento térmico pós-soldagem. Os resultados mostraram que as melhores propriedades mecânicas foram obtidas para uma composição contendo 1,35%Mn e 2,50%Ni. Adicionalmente, verificou-se que o tratamento térmico pós-soldagem propiciou uma redução da tenacidade ao impacto dos metais de solda de maior resistência devido à precipitação de carbetos nos contornos de grão.

The knowledge of the geological sequence and hydrological conditions in the area of portals was the basis for the design of the entry of the highway into tunnel Trojane. Mudstone, claystone and sandstone dominate the rock layering, which is tectonically reworked and contains structural anomalies. The complexity of the sequence makes it impossible to survey all the relevant features along the full 3km length of the tunnel. Sudden and frequent transitions between litological sequences impose potential instabilities and make the excavation of the tunnel particularly difficult. The initial survey established the zones of potential failures. These were monitored using topographic survey and inclinometers with an aim to make further geotechnical analyses more reliable and adjusted to the ground conditions. The analyses of the wall construction and the results of the monitoring showed that the design of the retaining wall was adequate. La connaissance de la séquence géologique et des conditions hydrologiques dans l'aire des portails a été la base pour la planification de l'entrée de l'autoroute dans le tunnel Trojane. Le schiste, l'argilite et le grès dominent la couche rocheuse qui est tectoniquement transformée et contient les anomalies structurales. A cause de la complexité de la séquence, il est impossible de revoir toutes les particularités le long des 3 kilomètres de la toute longueur du tunnel. Les transitions soudaines et fréquentes entre les séquences lithologiques imposent l'instabilité potentielle et font l'excavation du tunnel particulièrement difficile. La revue initiale a été établie sur les zones où il existe l'éboulement potential. Elles étaient contrôlées à l'aide de la revue topographique et de l'inclinomètre pour que les analyses géotechniques suivantes soient plus sûres et adaptées aux conditions du sol. Les analyses de la construction des murs et des résultats du contrôle ont montré que la planification du mur réteneur était correspondante. Der Autobahneingang in den Trojane Tunnel war projektiert auf Basis von der Kenntnis der geologischen und hydrogeologischen Bedingungen in dem Portalgebiet. Das Gebiet besteht aus dem Tonstein und dem Sandstein. Die Schichten sind tektonisch verformt und sind deswegen sehr heterogen. Die anfaenglichen Untersuchungen haben die Zonen von den potentiellen Bruechen definiert. Weitere geotechnische Analysen waren fitted an reale geologische Bedingungen durch das Monitoring der potentiellen Bruchzonen, welches aus den topographyschen Messungen und Inklinometerdaten entstand. Die Analyse des Wandbaues und die Resultate von dem Monitoring haben erwiesen, dass die Wandprojektierung entsprechend war.

The world-class Waihi (>6.6 Moz Au, >41.8 Moz Ag) and adjacent Favona (>0.5 Moz Au) deposits are within a single volcanic-hosted epithermal Au-Ag district located in the southern Coromandel Peninsula, New Zealand. Gold and silver mineralised quartz veins at both deposits are hosted in porphyritic andesite flows of the Waipupu Formation. Both deposits have veins surrounded by intense widespread hydrothermal alteration that is characterised by the assemblage of quartz, pyrite, adularia, illite or interstratified illite-smectite, plus less common chlorite and albite, which is locally overprinted by minor calcite or rare kaolinite. Quantitative mass transfer calculations using Gresen's general metasomatic equation indicate that hydrothermally altered andesite at both deposits is enriched in silicon, potassium, rubidium, barium, sulphur, gold, arsenic and antimony, whereas sodium, strontium and calcium are mostly lost. Iron and magnesium show mixed gain and loss. Element gain or loss can be directly related to the prevailing alteration mineralogy. Addition of potassium, rubidium and barium coupled with the concomitant loss of sodium, strontium and calcium in intensely altered wall rocks corresponds to the replacement of plagioclase by adularia or illite. Partial retention of sodium and calcium reflects the presence of hydrothermal albite and calcite, respectively. Mass balance calculations show distinct element gain and loss that can be related to the intensity and type of alteration mineralogy. However, because most rocks are intensely altered and the progression into less altered peripheral rocks is not observed in this study, the lateral extent of elements gain or loss is unconstrained with anomalies extending at least 200 to 300 m away from major veins.

Coal has been mined in the central Appalachian coalfields of southern West Virginia, western Virginia, and eastern Kentucky for more than a century. The dwindling reserve base consists in large part of coal that would have been considered unmineable by earlier generations. Nearly every current operation is working on a property where coal has been extracted in the past, from seams either above, below, or both. NIOSH is conducting research aimed at helping mine planners prevent hazardous conditions due to multiple seam interactions. To-date, more than 300 case histories have been collected from underground mines, mainly from central Appalachia. This paper focuses on several of the more challenging situations that have been encountered, including: • Room-and-pillar development 20 ft (6 m) beneath full extraction workings at a depth of 1,000 ft (300m) of cover (Virginia) • Pillar recovery 45 ft above full extraction workings at 900 ft (270 m) of cover (Virginia) • Near-simultaneous room-and-pillar mining with pillar recovery with 40 ft (12 m) of interburden and 1,500-2,000 ft (450-600 m) of cover (Kentucky) • Longwall mining directly beneath main entries in overlying seams (West Virginia) • Some of these operations have been highly successful in overcoming the challenges, others less so. The lessons learned from their experience will help ensure that these and similar difficult reserves can be mined safely.

Even though there is always a feeling of anticipation before a blast is detonated, most blasts are part of a day’s work. Once in a while there is an event that impresses even the most jaded blaster. Few blasts have had the impact of the Kingdome implosion in March of this year. Fortunately for both the Seattle area and the explosives community, the “impact” of the implosion was far less than many local residents had feared. This outcome, of course, was not by chance, but the result of careful planning and design. An urban implosion requires a mix of engineering, logistics, and public relations. Unique challenges on this project tested the resourcefulness of the entire team.

To improve the air quality in large-opening stone mines by developing better ventilation techniques, including appropriate fan selection in conjunction with air-coursing methods. Background Stone mines are the most common underground large-entry mines in the United States. Data from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) for the year 2000 indicate that there were 162 active nonmetal underground mines in the United States, of which 117 were stone mines. Many underground stone mines are drift mines developed from previous quarry operations. Typically, these room-and-pillar mines have entries that are 20 ft or higher and at least 40 ft wide. These large dimensions lead to a very small ventilating pressure loss, even when significant air quantities move through the mine. This is especially true of drift mine operations where ventilating pressure losses of <0.25 in w.g. are common. Underground stone mines with shafts that are<200 ft deep typically have ventilating pressure losses that are <2 in w.g. The pressure losses through these mines are much lower than those of a typical coal mine or deep metal/nonmetal mine. Therefore, the ventilation techniques and principles are quite different. In addition, because of new MSHA regulations that limit the concentration of diesel particulate matter, these mines may need to greatly increase their ventilation airflow. Therefore, large-opening mines need a fan that can move large air quantities and operate at low static pressures. There are three fan types for mine ventilation: centrifugal, axial vane, and propeller. Centrifugal fans are uncommon in underground stone mines as they are often associated with mines requiring the highest of ventilation pressures. Axial vane fans are widely used in all types of mining operations. They are the most common fan type currently found in underground large-opening stone mines. However, they typically do not operate at low static pressures with high efficiency. Propeller fans are currently uncommon in underground stone mines. They are designed for low static pressures and large air quantities at higher efficiency. This fan type best suits the ventilation needs in large-opening stone mines?they produce large air quantities at low pressure losses. Mines with air shafts<100 ft long and at least 12 ft in diameter have fairly low mine static pressures and may also benefit from propeller fans.

In the ladle refining process, the ?FeO?-content of the ladle slag is of great importance in the chemistry as well as the energetics of the process. An optimization of the process requires an accurate knowledge of the thermodynamic activities of ?FeO? in the ladle slags. Due to the discrepancies in the existing data, renewed attempts are being made at the Royal Institute of Technology to generate reliable data for binary, ternary and multi component slags containing ?FeO? at steelmaking temperatures. In order to measure the activities of ?FeO? in the slags, a gas equilibration technique was employed in the present work. The slags, kept in Pt-crucibles, were equilibrated with a CO-CO2-Ar gas mixture and quenched after equilibration. The chemical composition of the slag was analyszed. From a knowledge of the thermodynamics of Fe-Pt system, the ?FeO? activities in the slag could be evaluated. The results of the present studies, together with other literature values, were optimized in the slag software, THERMOSLAG® developed in the Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden. The results of the optimization are presented. Model calculations were performed with the KTH slag software, THERMOSLAG®, by using plant data from OVAKO Steel, Hofors, Sweden. It was found that oxygen estimations in the metal from the ?FeO? analyses of slags, obtained by conventional sampling and analysis methods, where less reliable. Estimation of the oxygen levels utilizing the sulphur partition between the slag and the metal were carried out using the THERMOSLAG® software. Reasonable estimations of the oxygen contents in the metal confirmed that this could be a very useful tool for the plant operator. The aim of this paper is the construction of models of systems with ionic and ionic-covalent bonds (molten salts) using experimental diffraction data and the calculation of their structure and thermodynamic and transport properties. Modelling was performed using algorithm BELION, in which the non-coulomb part of interaction potential between ions in the model was determined by the method of iterative simulation which targeted agreement between calculated and experimental partial pair correlation functions (PPCFs). The ionic charges in salts, which can be fractional, were determined by minimization of internal energy. In this paper, the algorithm BELION is applied for chlorides of alkaline-earth metals. Pair potentials, PPCFs, atomization energies, self-diffusion coefficients and electric conductivity are calculated. The charge of alkaline-earth metals was in the range of 2.0-2.1, slightly increasing from Mg to Ba. Partial pair correlation functions and atomization energies of models agree well with experimental data for MgCl2, SrCl2and BaCl2. Biodiversity offsets are conservation actions intended to compensate for the residual, unavoidable harm to biodiversity caused by development projects. The use of biodiversity offsets in the context of mining has significant potential for enabling mining to take place in areas with biodiversity values, where it would not otherwise be possible to meet the relevant legal tests under the Resource Management Act 1991, and potentially the Conservation Act 1987. This paper looks at the concept of biodiversity offsets (and environmental compensation generally) both in New Zealand and internationally, and considers how lessons learned overseas may be adapted for this country. In New Zealand the practice of biodiversity offsets and environmental compensation is ad hoc and variable. The challenge with biodiversity offsets is to establish a transparent and coherent means of identifying the overall priorities and objectives of adopting such an approach, as well as how the relevant values are measured and protected. Establishing a methodology for quantifying biodiversity value, and the need for clear policy guidelines on biodiversity offsets are identified as key areas in need of wider discussion.

With the recent increase in environmental awareness, gold mining companies are fast becoming signatories of the International Cyanide Management Code (ICMI, 2007). The objective of the Code is to improve the management of cyanide used in gold mining and to assist in the protection of human health and the reduction of environmental impacts associated with the use of cyanide. In particular the code specifies the following cyanide concentration limits: 50 ppm WAD cyanide in a tailings storage facility, 0.5 ppm WAD cyanide for effluents, and 0.022 ppm free cyanide or 0.022 ppm WAD cyanide as surrogate in the post mixing zone of river discharge. Weak acid dissociable (WAD) cyanide refers to those cyanide species liberated at a moderate pH of 4.5, such as HCN(aq) and CN-, and the majority of Zn, Cd, Cu, Ni and Ag complexes with low dissociation constants. It is potentially toxic to humans and animals. Gold plants using cyanide should ideally measure WAD cyanide online and destroy WAD cyanide in excess of the applicable limits to ensure compliance with the Code. Mintek has recently developed an online WAD cyanide analyser (WAD Cynoprobe). The WAD cyanide analysis technique is based on the use of a ligand exchange reagent that liberates WAD cyanide bound to metals such as Zn, Cd, Cu, Ni and Ag. The ligand exchange reaction is represented by the following chemical equation: Metal(CN)X + yLigand &#8596; Metal(Ligand)y + xCN- The plant filtrate is treated with a ligand exchange reagent, to liberate WAD cyanide, before measuring the free cyanide concentration via amperometry. The WAD Cynoprobe measures both free and WAD cyanide concentration. Its fast analysis time, approximately five minutes, makes it suitable for use in the control and optimisation of the cyanide destruction and recovery process. The instrument has proven accurate and reliable in the analysis of synthetic copper, nickel and zinc cyanide solutions made up in the laboratory as well as under industrial gold plant conditions during various trials. The WAD Cynoprobe has gained widespread commercial acceptance and is currently implemented on nine gold plants around the world.

Due to high concentration of NaOH in the digested slurry after scheelite digestion, it is diluted to about 4N before filtration to separate sodium tungstate solution from the sludge (residue). However, in practice there may be deviations in the normality of NaOH present in the slurry. There may also be variations in the temperature of the slurry and filtration time. Slight variations in these parameters could cause tungsten losses in the sludge via the back reaction: Ca(OH)2 + Na2WO4? CaWO4 + 2NaOH This paper pertains to the effect of normality, temperature and time on the tungsten losses in the sludge that is separated from ?diluted-scheelite-slurry-in-NaOH? via filtration. Results indicated that tungsten losses in the filtered residue (sludge) were quite significant when the slurry temperature was kept at 70°C or higher. The effect of high temperature was less significant at the slurry normality of 3.6 or higher. Combination of low slurry normality (<3.6) and high temperature (>60°C) resulted into large W-losses in the sludge.

Kinetic Study on the Leaching of Vanadium from LD Converter Slag Using Sulfuric Acid In order to reduce the environmental impact due to land disposal of LD (Linz-Donawitz) converter slag from steelmaking plant and to valorise this waste material, an acid leaching study was carried out to assess the effect of several parameters on the kinetics of vanadium dissolution. The characterisation and morphology of the feed investigated using XRD, XRF. The factors influencing leaching vanadium such as particle size, temperature, slurry density and the concentration of sulfuric acid were investigated and optimised. The maximum vanadium recovery about 95 per cent achieved at 70¦C, S/L: 1/15, acid concentration: 3M and for 150 minutes of leaching time. The dissolution of vanadium in sulfuric acid shows that there are two stages in the kinetics of leaching. At the first 15&nbsp;minutes, there is a sharp increase in the amount of vanadium extracted and at longer leaching time, the extraction increase slightly. In the present work, the shrinking core model (SCM) was used to describe the acid leaching of vanadium compounds. A summary of the controlling regimes in the SCM are examined below for short time (less than 12 min.) and long time (more than 30 min.) stages. So, it was found that the kinetics of leaching in both stages is controlled by solid product diffusion regime.

"The exploration of seamounts south of the Azores during the EMEPC/Açores/G3/2007 campaign allowed for the collection of 30 Fe-Mn crusts from the Atlantis, Great Meteor, Small Hyeres, Irving and Plato seamounts, as well as from the East Azores Fracture Zone. These were the first samples of Fe-Mn crusts studied from these seamounts. The Fe-Mn crusts were analyzed using multiple analytical methods.The crusts are fairly homogeneous, showing typical textures for this type of occurrences. The Fe/Mn ratio, patterns and concentrations in rare earth elements, and the great homogeneity of the crusts lead to the conclusion that they have a hydrogenetic origin, precipitating directly from seawater. Although the content in Fe and Mn of the crusts is consistent with data available for the Atlantic, the mean concentration of Co is comparable to the average values for the Pacific. Cu and Ni show lower values than the ones known for the Pacific."

Geophysical anomalies result from the passage of hydrothermal fluids through rocks. Interpretation of these anomalies, when integrated with available geological and geochemical data, assists the construction of a conceptual model of the original hydrology of the system. The original extent of a geothermal system is often indicated by the distribution of low resistivity argillic clay alteration. Quartz-adularia vein deposits, silica sinters or stockwork (often mineralised) cause local increases in resistivity. Appropriately chosen electrical techniques can therefore be used to help target such structures. Airborne magnetic surveys have also proven useful in New Zealand epithermal exploration, because hydrothermal fluids destroy magnetite causing extensive demagnetisation anomalies. Ground magnetic surveys can sometimes be useful for geological interpretation on a local scale. Positive gravity anomalies may occur as a result of mineral precipitation (silica or calcite) in high porosity host rocks, while negative gravity anomalies can result from hydrothermal fracturing and leaching of relatively dense host rocks. The relative merits of these geophysical techniques as used in the exploration of epithermal mineral prospects are discussed, with particular reference to the Hauraki Goldfield. The preferred method for defining zones of quartz veining/silicification is vector or tensor gradient resistivity. Exploration strategies and technique refinements are suggested as a means of improving the resolution of potentially mineralised target structures, in a more efficient and cost effective manner.

In this paper the production and stability of crystalline scorodite (FeAsO4·2H2O) is discussed both on the basis of previously published work as well as recent work performed in our laboratory. The production of scorodite, especially from arsenic-rich and iron-deficient sulphate solutions offers a number of operational advantages such as high arsenic content, stoichiometriciron demand, and excellent dewatering characteristics. In addition to hydrothermal production of scorodite the work done over the last 10 years in our laboratory has determined that it is feasible to produce scorodite by step-wise lime neutralization at 90°C. The atmospheric scorodite possesses the same structural and solubility characteristics with the hydrothermally produced scorodite. Long term equilibration tests (up to 66 weeks) in the pH range 5 to 9 and temperatures from 22 °C to 75 °C revealed scorodite to undergo slow incongruent dissolutionyielding a highly metastable nano-sized 2-line ferrihydrite phase. The equilibrium arsenic concentration with this phase was 0.35, 0.96 and 5.87 mg/L at pH 5, 6, and 7 respectively at 22°C. In the presence of gypsum slightly lower concentrations were measured, this being more pronounced at pH>7. It was tentatively deduced that a Fe-Ca-AsO4 association (in the form of a phase resembling the mineral yukonite) contributes to the lowering of As concentration. Finally thermodynamic calculations determined that scorodite is stable in the presence of ferrihydriteunder oxic conditions up to pH 6.75 at 22 °C or higher pH at lower temperature and gypsum-saturated solutions. Surface mining operations typically require run-of-mine material to be sized for further processing. In-pit crushing facilities serve this need, as stationary, semi-mobile or fully mobile units. Although in particular fully mobile crushing facilities have been in use for over half of a century, other surface mining techniques have typically been implemented. However, with increasing operating costs in truck and shovel operations, and other economic considerations, mobile crushing plants are increasingly a viable option. The operational and economical parameters in relation to the optimal surface mining equipment selection will be reviewed. The role of the mobile crushing technology within the continuous vs. noncontinuous surface mining operation and basis for mine planning are also discussed. Current applications and respective case studies will be reviewed. Key performance indicators will be presented. These performance parameters can be viewed as a tool to aid in the equipment selection process. The future direction for further research and development in mobile crushing facilities will also be presented.
