"The Expert System implemented at the East-Malartic mill controls a copper flotation circuit while taking into account the profitability of the operation. Treating a copper gold ore, the flow sheet integrates a flotation step followed by cyanide leach circuit. The Expert System calculates the actual net smelter revenue of the flotation circuit, accounts for the operating cost of the cyanidation circuit and defines optimal metallurgical operating targets to optimize the overall economics. To be realistic, probability factors and circuit diagnostic analysis are integrated in the operating target selection. The Expert System has proved to be successful, robust and flexible. It resulted in a copper concentrate grade increase of 1% while maintaining recovery. The use of the expert system also gives plant personnel good training procedures and promotes interaction with mill operator.INTRODUCTIONThe East-Malartic mill is located close to the town of Malartic in North Western Quebec, Canada. The mill was first commissioned in 1938. The flowsheet at that time was a straight cyanidation circuit. The original mill operated in that mode up to the discovery of the Bousquet 2 orebody in 1989 which consisted of a massive copper sulphide ore averaging 0.7% copper and 7 g/mt of gold. Bousquet 2 ore processing required a mill retrofit. Grinding capacity, gravity and copper flotation circuits were inserted prior to the cyanidation circuit in order to achieve 3,200 mtpd capacity at expected recoveries.In 1993, control of the flotation circuit was deemed critical in order to maintain the flotation performance and to reduce cyanide consumption since the copper sulphide contained in the Bousquet 2 ore is a high cyanide consumer (50% bornite). (McMullen, 1999) As a result, the implementation of advanced control strategies in order to increase the metallurgical profitability of the plant and to reduce the operating variability between operators was the most rational alternative. In 1994, Corem was chosen to perform the plant audit and to write the first set of rules. The on-line control strategy was started up in 1995. In 1996 and 1997 the Expert System was shutdown because of an extreme change in the ore coming from the milling of Bousquet #1 ore and the departure of the projects engineer. In 1998, the system was restarted and the results were impressive. Furthermore in May of 2001 a patent was issued for the control strategy. (Breau, 2001)"

The Goonumbla district of central-west New South Wales, Australia, hosts four significant porphyry Cu-Au deposits that contain a combined probable ore reserve of 71.7 million tonnes at 1.2 per cent Cu and 0.5 g/t Au. Mineralisation in the Goonumbla deposits is associated with narrow, pipe-like intrusions of quartz monzonite porphyry, in which several intrusive phases have been recognised. Five textural characteristics have been used to distinguish the various intrusive phases recognised in the Goonumbla porphyry deposits: (1) phenocryst abundance; (2) nature of the groundmass; (3 and 4) proportion and mineralogy of the mafic and non-mafic phenocrysts; and (5) the presence or absence of anhedral quartz grains in the groundmass. In addition, each intrusive phase is classified according to its estimated original quartz, alkali feldspar and plagioclase contents. Features common to all of the intrusions are that they contain two types of plagioclase and two or three types of K-feldspar phenocrysts in variable proportions. Most of the intrusions also contain apatite micro-phenocrysts. The groundmass textures range from aphanitic through granular to euhedral K-feldspar in a quartz matrix. With only one exception, all of the intrusive phases recognised are either quartz monzonite porphyry or mafic (>5 per cent mafic minerals) quartz monzonite porphyry. The exception is a biotite - phyric monzodiorite, which occurs in the basal portions of one of the deposits. Textural variants of intrusive phases at Goonumbla have been investigated to establish whether specific combinations of characteristics indicate mineralised intrusions, while others suggest barren ones. Some correlations between intrusion types and Cu and Au grade have been recognised. ABSTRACT Health and safety indicators help mine sites predict the likelihood of an event, advance initiatives to control risks, and track progress. Although useful to encourage organizations to work together, executing such risk assessments comes with challenges. This paper focuses on one trona mine’s experience in the development and implementation of a field level risk assessment program to help its entire organization understand and manage risk to an acceptable level. Through a transformational process of ongoing support and communication, Solvay Green River fostered a culture of trust and safety grounded in risk assessment, safety interactions, and hazard correction. The application of consistent risk assessment (RA) tools was critical to create a participatory workforce that not only talks about safety, but actively identifies energies that contribute to hazards and potential incidents. In this paper, reflecting on the mine’s process of RA implementation provides examples of likely barriers that sites may encounter when trying to document and manage risks. As discussed, consistent efforts to establish a participatory risk management program are worth the initial struggle to ultimately reduce incidents. INTRODUCTION Work-related health and safety (H&S) incidents often account for lost days on the job, contributing to organizational/financial and personal/social burdens [1-2]. Accompanying research demonstrates that risk and ambiguity around risk contribute to almost every decision that individuals make throughout the day [3-4]. In response, understanding individual attitudes toward risk has been unquestionably linked to predicting H&S behavior [5]. Although an obvious need exists to identify more comprehensive methods to assess and mitigate potential hazards, some argue that risk management is not given adequate attention in occupational H&S [6]. Additionally, research suggests that a current lack of knowledge, skills, and motivation are primary barriers to mitigating workplace risks [3-6]. Therefore, enhancing knowledge and awareness around risk-based decisions, including individuals’ abilities to understand, measure, and assign levels of risk to determine an appropriate response, is increasingly important in hazardous environments to predict and prevent incidents. This paper focuses on tailored approaches to field level risk assessment (FLRA), measurement, and common barriers to participating in such activities. The authors use a trona mine in Green River, Wyoming, as a case study to illustrate how the organization overcame widespread and site-specific challenges to implement a proactive risk management program. By discussing the mine’s tailored FLRA program, this case study contributes to the literature by first, providing examples of critical components that need to be in place to ensure successful risk management and second, context for continuous quality improvement that can foster a higher level of trust and empowerment on site."

In the green backfilling mining of underground coal mines, gangue in a coal seam is used to replace and fill goafs. However, the gas drainage time changes in the amount of gangue output and order in the extraction sequence of stope blocks, thereby changing the production output. A multi-objective integer programming model was proposed to solve this based on an improved non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm. The results show a feasible gangue filling rate can be found and the extraction sequence for a long-term planning time is optimized. It increases the planned annual output by 26% and reduces equipment idle time.

The design of the settling pond for the Malvern Hills opencast coal project was based on a primary requirement to control runoff and sediment generated from the immediate 6 ha mine catchment, which included two seepages from old underground workings. The pond has been particularly effective in controlling turbidity in the outflow water, with the consent limit of 50 NTU being met on all but one occasion and normal levels of discharge less than 10 NTU. Water quality testing carried out at the time of consenting indicated that there were no acid-generation issues with the proposed mine site in dominant mudstone strata of the Broken River Formation, and that water from the old mine workings was near-neutral in terms of pH and well-buffered. However, it became apparent over the very dry summer of 2003 - 2004 that slaking of the exposed mudrocks in the mine batters was resulting in significant acidity generation, and outflow pH levels were well below the consent limit of 6.5 during and following periods of rainfall. Although these acidity problems have been remediated in the short-term by the use of lime products, it is clear that a programme of lithotype characterisation for AMD should have been undertaken and this has now been implemented. Design of long-term acid drainage control measures is being carried out, and will probably be based around the use of hydrated lime for pH control with enhancement of natural wetlands.

Ca-Ni based alloys were investigated on structures, hydrogenation properties and the effect of additive elements on hydrogenation properties. CaNi, samples were decomposed to form a new hydride with a CsCl-type structure on the constituent metal atoms at high temperatures such as 673K in a hydrogen atmosphere. The candidate of the third element which was added to stabilize the original compound was investigated by using the Miedema's semi- empirical model and, as a result, Pd was chosen. The hydrogenation of CaPd was conducted with a Sieverts' type apparatus and the synthesis of Ca-Ni-Pd ternary alloys was performed by high frequency heating.

"The comminution energy curve is a profoundly simple graphical technique that displays detailed operating efficiency information for industrial comminution processes. The database underlying the methodology has recently more than doubled, to now contain a substantial fraction of the international comminution output (1.7 billion tonnes of rock per year) across more than 8 major commodities. This increase has deepened the analytical capabilities and effectiveness for assessing comminution circuit performance in relation to comparable operating mines. This paper will explore how the energy curve methodology can be used to examine the ability of stirred mill technologies to increase efficiency.Specifically, this paper explores how the energy curves methodology can be used to present energy efficiency gains achieved at three mines employing a stirred mill technology under different duties. The first of these cases studies was conducted by Rosa (2014) who compared the performance of two ball mills operating in parallel with a Vertimill in the regrinding circuit at the Samarco Iron project in South East Brazil. The Vertimill was found to achieve the same product specification while consuming 40% less energy. Brissette (2010) investigated the impact of grinding media on the performance of both ball mills and Vertimills. The energy savings achieved varied from 10% to 40% for the ball mills and 30% to 60% for the Vertimills. Lastly, Bergerman (2012) investigated the operating conditions of the Sossego regrind circuit from 2006 to 2011 against design specifications and laboratory testing. "The Atlantis-Il-Deep is a stratified metalliferous deposit located along the median valley of the Red Sea at a water depth of about 2200 m. The metal-bearing mud contains sulphides of zinc, copper and iron with significant amounts of silver, gold and cobalt. A variety of oxide, siliceous and carbonaceous gangue material is also present. Long sediment cores indicate that the thickness of the deposit may reach 25 m, but the average kriged thickness of metal-rich sediments is about 11 m.Mining geostatistics was applied to estimate the Red Sea offshore mineral resources. Experimental semi-variograms were computed along 0 ± 180 degrees and then models were fitted to analyze the mineralization phenomenon. Kriging estimates indicate that 696.330 million t of bulk sediments contain 1.891 million t of zinc, 0.425 million t of copper and 3. 75 thousand t of silver. Gold and cobalt contents were calculated from the analysis of solids in flotation concentrates as 47 t and 5368 t respectively. The significant outcome of implementing geostatistics to the Red Sea brine precipitates is not only for the evaluation of metal resources, but it also provides a useful tool in the optimization of selective dredging of appropriate areas to be mined. IntroductionThe discovery and extensive exploration of hot brines and hydrothermal sediments in the Red Sea median valley revealed the fact that the Atlantis-II-Deep is a potentially exploitable metalliferous mud in the economic sense. Sediments in the mineralized deep are composed mainly of oxides, various types of silicates and sulphides with considerable concentrations of zinc, copper, cadmium, silver and gold. The mineral-rich deposit, located at a mean water depth of about 2000 m, has an average thickness of 11 m, and is covered by a brine layer having a temperature of 60°C."

"Global niobium production is currently dominated by three operating mines, Araxá and Catalão in Brazil, and Niobec in Canada. Although over 90% of the world’s niobium is mined and processed in Brazil, a number of high grade niobium deposits exist worldwide. The advancement of these deposits depends largely on the development of operable beneficiation flowsheets. Pyrochlore, the primary niobium bearing mineral, is typically upgraded by flotation with amine collectors at acidic pH, and often includes a reverse gangue flotation stage prior to pyrochlore flotation. Challenges related to the flotation of niobium ores include complicated flowsheets which require pulp pH adjustment from alkaline to highly acidic conditions, difficulty recovering fine grained pyrochlore, producing concentrates that meet specifications, and minimizing the losses to reverse pre-flotation gangue concentrates, slimes, and tailings. The specific flotation challenges associated with different niobium ores are discussed. In some cases, the use of alternate flotation reagents and flowsheets are required to achieve reasonable gangue rejection and maximize recovery, particularly of very fine pyrochlore grains.INTRODUCTIONNiobium is a transition metal primarily found in the oxide minerals pyrochlore (Ca,Na)2Nb2O6(OH,F) and columbite (Fe,Mn)Nb2O6. After physical upgrading, pyrochlore is converted into a ferroniobium product which is largely used in the production of high strength low-alloy steel. Today’s niobium market is dominated by the Companhia Brasileira de Metalurgia e Mineração, whose Araxá operation produces over 80% of the world’s niobium. There are two smaller operations, Niobec in Canada, and Catalão in Brazil, which account for the remaining production (U.S. Geological Survey, 2013).A number of niobium deposits exist globally, their advancement dependent on the development of operable beneficiation flowsheets. Pyrochlore, the predominant niobium bearing mineral, is commonly upgraded by flotation with cationic amine collectors in acidic pulp conditions. However, many niobium ores do not respond to this typical flowsheet because they are either highly refractory or niobium deports to other minerals such as columbite, ilmenite and rutile, which are not as responsive to this reagent scheme (Bulatovic, 2010). Other reagents, such as alkyl hydroxamic acid, have been studied extensively and while promising, are not without their own inherent issues including lack of selectivity over iron oxide minerals, and high addition rates (Ni & Liu, 2012; Gorlovskii, Eropkiny, Koval, Strelstin, Khobotova, & Shtchukina, 1968; Gorlovskii, Khobatova, & Shtchukina, 1966).It is the aim of this report to highlight the challenges associated with the physical upgrading of niobium minerals through examination of the flotation behavior of two different ore systems. In order to overcome these challenges it is important to thoroughly understand the limitations of typical flowsheets/reagent schemes currently employed in operation."

The deep foundations industry has largely remained unchanged since in the advent of CFA piling in the 1960s. Piles have consequently been designed and constructed following the traditional codes and standards without much regard for optimising in-life efficiency or end-of-life reuse. After existing developments have been demolished there is little motivation to reuse existing piled foundations as their load bearing capacity and structural integrity cannot be verified. Therefore piling contractors are increasingly spending more resources on coring through existing piles, only to be replaced with larger diameter or deeper piles. The hollow element of the HIPER® Pile provides access to the entire length of the pile to permit inspections and a shaft in which the pile can be extended if needed. This paper presents and compares the embodied carbon savings, both during construction and through foundation reuse, from a HIPER® Pile scheme compared with the traditional solid pile scheme. A discussion on the benefits of this technology and its implications on warranties and approvals is also presented to motivate the foundations industry to embrace whole lifecycle assessments and support the journey to net-zero carbon.

"Agrium’s Canadian Phosphate Business (CPB) is comprised of Kapuskasing Phosphate Operations (KPO) in Northern Ontario, Canada’s only operating phosphate mine, and Redwater Phosphate Operations (RPO) in Alberta, which manufactures the fertilizer from KPO’s concentrate.Production from KPO’s South Pit commenced in 2009 and introduced contaminant problems: high aluminium from crandallite and kaolinite clays. These issues caused a drastic decrease in P2O5 recovery and throughput in both plants. KPO attempted to reduce Al clays by means of aggressive desliming. Meanwhile RPO experienced high amounts of dissolved metals in their feed that are detrimental to fertilizer production.This paper covers the mineralogy of the problem, its impact on contaminant separation at KPO, on RPO’s process and on Agrium’s Canadian Phosphate Business as a whole.Potential solutions to the problem are discussed and analysed, including a process change to deslime high aluminium streams more aggressively and high grade ore flotation, which is atypical at KPO. The latter is a demonstration of the value of communication between the concentrator and the client, as KPO accepted a recovery loss and increased production costs in order to increase overall CPB profits. General lessons learned are discussed, followed by a section on ore blending.INTRODUCTIONAlthough the existence of the Kapuskasing phosphate deposit has been known since the 1970s, it’s only since 1999 that Agrium has been operating the Kapuskasing Phosphate Operations (KPO). The mine consists of three major pits (Center, North and South) from which a mining contractor hauls the apatite ore to the Agrium concentrator. The beneficiation plant processes the ore, separating contaminants such as Fe, Mg and Al which are detrimental to its client, Agrium’s Redwater Phosphate Operations (RPO). I~JTI HE work on the indium-zirconium system is part A of a larger investigation of zirconium-phase diagrams with solute elements, silver, cadmium, indium, tin, and antimony, which is intended to provide information about the metallic valency of zirconium. The system is an ideal example since the sizes of indium and zirconium atoms are nearly the same, and the solute and the solvent occur in the same row of the periodic table. The only solute from Group III B which had previously been added to zirconium was aluminum' and it was of interest to determine whether indium would dissolve appreciably in alpha zirconium and stabilize this phase in the same manner. Experimental Procedure The experimental methods used in the indium-zirconium work are similar to those described earlier for the silver-zirconium system.' Reactor Grade 1 iodide zirconium of 99.95 pct purity* and indium of 99.99 pct purity were arc cast, and then annealed in silica capsules with protective foils of zirconium and molybdenum. Annealing temperatures and times varied from 1 day at 1300°C to 43 days at 550°C. The compositions of the alloys were detcrmined by an individual chemical analysis of the actual metallographic specimens after two or more sides were examined to insure the absence of solute segregation. Calibrated thermocouples were used throughout, and the uncertainty in the temperatures reported, owing to calibration error, furnace control, and measurement of the small temperature gradients near the capsules, is believed to be well within ±2°C. Typical impurities in the alloys were found by a neutron-activation analysis of four different alloys. The results are given in Table I where the ranges of values will be seen to compare favorably with the usual values for iodide zirconium. With respect to oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon the absence of any unusual amount of these elements compared to iodide zirconium was indicated by the alloy hardness values, since hardness is increased sharply by the presence of these elements. The value for 0 pct In, obtained from the alloys by extrapolation, is 58 2 7 VPN which is in the low part3 f the normal range of hardness found in iodide zirconium. Stability analyses of fractured and faulted rock masses require delineation of the position, extent, and orientation of geologic discontinuities. The size of the smallest active discontinuity that may potentially be resolved using the spatial distribution of microseismic event locations is Limited by the accuracy and precision of the location methods. At a hard-rock mine in the Coeur D'Alene mining district of northern Idaho, two data sets consisting of calibration blast signals from a known source site and origin time and microseismic event signals were recorded using a stope-wide accelerometer array. These seismic signals are used to quantify various sources of error in event location. Five factors influencing source location errors are examined in this U.S. Bureau of Mines study: (1) biases of the numerical source location techniques, (2) receiver array geometries, (3) uncertainties in receiver positions, (4) errors in picking arrival times, and (5) uncertainties in seismic velocity structure, including the effect of mine openings. In addition, synthetic data (accelerometer positions, travel-time picks and wave velocity) are used to determine the effect of known systematic and random errors on source location calculations. It is shown that the commonly accepted association of minimum travel-time residuals with the best location solution does not necessarily hold true when there is a systematic error in seismic velocity. Recommendations are made for increasing the accuracy and precision of locations of microseismic events detected under similar field conditions.

A case study is presented of the mechanical behaviour of fractures in the Westphalian A and B siliciclastic succession of mud-, silt- and sandstones with intercalating coal layers in the Campine basin of northeast Belgium. Mining ceased in the area in 1992 and a pilot well was drilled to assess the feasibility of methane extraction by hydraulic fracturing. Work was carried out to study the influence of types of cement fill in fractures on the shear behaviour of the rocks by comparison with that of the coal seams. X-ray computerised tomography was used for visual appraisal and selection of jointed rocks before destructive shear testing was carried out. Two major type of veins were found to be present, one cemented with carbonate and the other with kaolinite or kaolinite/carbonate. Uniaxial compressive strength and shear tests showed that differentiation of the two types of veins was vital in evaluating the strength of the sandstones, as cementing of the fractures by rigid carbonate minerals can reinstate the strength of the rock masses to that of the intact material. "Reporting of the gold production during a month implies to estimate the mass of gold that is processed by a mill, recovered as dorés, lost to the tailings and the change of gold inventory within the plant equipments. Carbon in pulp and/or carbon in leach tanks may contain gold inventory as large as 72 000 g (2 200 troy oz) of gold which needs to be estimated from measurements obtained from sampling the material contained in a tank. Sampling and analysis introduce measurement errors that could be systematic and/or random. This paper examines the effect of measurement errors on the estimation of the gold inventory and on the variation of the inventory in the carbon in leach tanks of the Agnico-Eagle Mines Limited Lapa concentrator. Results of the analysis demonstrate that the inventory is measured with ±10% reproducibility, while the variation of inventory used for mass balance is known with ±300% reproducibility.INTRODUCTIONThe preparation of a production report implies to reconcile measured data with the constraint of material balance over the considered period of production. The sampling and data reconciliation problems were recently reviewed by Morrison (2008) and Jansen (2009a; 2009b). Typically a production report is prepared to cover a period over which the mass conservation hypothesis can be considered valid. In gold processing plants, the change of inventory can seldom be neglected and plays a significant role in material balance calculations. This is particularly true for circuits using carbon adsorption, where the complete cycle of carbon is measured in days.In a 2000 t/d gold ore processing plant, the inventory can be as large as 140 000 g of gold in gravity concentrator bins, carbon in pulp tanks and in the electrolysis circuit. This is equivalent to the mass of gold that fed the circuit during 10 days of operation with 7 g/t feed assays. The change of inventory may therefore strongly impact the production figures and especially the plant recovery at the end of a week or a month. Despite the financial impact associated with gold inventory, few publications are devoted to the subject. Bruington (1991) and Morrison (2008) discussed the problem and stressed the need for the development of reliable methods to estimate the gold inventory in carbon in pulp or carbon in leach circuits."

The general goal of passive acid mine drainage (AMD) treatment is to reduce levels of acidity and metals to acceptable levels. Most treatment systems use either an oxidising or a reducing strategy. In oxidising systems, alkalinity is added along with dissolved oxygen; in reducing systems, dissolved oxygen is removed (if present) and then alkalinity is added. It is recommended that small-scale field trials be conducted as part of the methodology of selecting the best remediation strategy at AMD sites. Following successful field trials at the Sullivan Mine AMD, the Pike River Coal Company (PRCC) has shown foresight by using the same system to treat AMD generated as a result of taking a bulk sample of coal at the Pike River coal field. The system reduced acidity by 100 per cent, iron by 99 per cent, aluminium by 96 per cent, nickel by 95 per cent, manganese by 51 per cent and zinc by 99 per cent. The success of this field trial suggests that a system using a reducing strategy may be appropriate for the Pike River Adit AMD site.

Air quality is a big topic of discussion in regional mining communities as well as urban environments situated close to port terminals handling bulk solids. Community perception of poor air quality can significantly affect the reputation of the mining operation and handling facilities. Dust monitoring for regulatory compliance relies on using a handful of accurate but very expensive sensors, usually situated at the boundary, relatively far from the activities that generate the airborne dust. These reference monitors measure dust leaving the site but dust mitigation and management on-site largely relies on operator judgement. At a fraction of the cost, small wireless solar powered units can be used to supplement reference monitors in real-time. Due to their compact nature, portability and low price, these units can be implemented on a mass scale to increase spatial resolution of dust measurements and, more importantly, in much closer proximity to both the dust generating activity and the sources of dust. This can provide valuable insights into the origins and timing of dust generation thus producing datadriven decision-making while minimising subjectivity. Similarly, light detection and ranging (LiDAR) is another supplemental technology that can be used to increase the spatial resolution of dust measurements in near real-time, however, the cost of commercial systems even exceeds that of regulatory monitors. LiDAR also presents difficulties in quantifying dust plume concentrations. This study presents learnings of implementing both technologies for dust emissions management. Several low-cost sensor units and a fast-scanning custom-built 3D LiDAR system operating at a range of 1.5 km with a resolution of 1.5 m were deployed on a surface mine to monitor dust emissions from different activities. The project explores the use of real-time sensor data to quantify LiDAR measurements in parallel with integration into mine planning. The approach can assist in prioritising dust mitigation activities thereby reducing instances of emissions exceedance and minimising water use through databased and targeted application. Demonstrated is an opportunity for a step-change in industry best practice as well as commercialisation and operationalisation of the method across different industries, including future mineral extraction.

In August, 1975, North Broken Hill Limited announced that an intersection of 37.3 m of high grade lead-silver-zinc mineralisation, assaying 26.2 per cent Pb, 495 g/tonne Ag and 21.2 per cent Zn had been obtained at its Mine at Broken Hill, 520 m north-east of its No. 3 Shaft and slightly below the No. 36 level (1581 m). Subsequent drilling confirmed the presence of the extension of the Broken Hill Orebody on the north-western side of the Globe Vauxhall Retrograde Shear Zone and defined 1.8 million tonnes of high grade mineralisation. The area containing this mineralisation was subsequently named the Fitzpatrick Area in tribute to the late Mr. W.E. Fitzpatrick a former Member of the the Board and Manager of the Ccnpany's Broken Hill operations. This paper describes in brief the exploration programme leading up to the discovery, the general geology of the area and the proposed future exploration progranme for further extensions of the orebody within the mining leases of North Broken Hill Limited.
