Revolutionary changes in the organization of work have far outpaced our knowledge about the implications of these changes for the quality of working life and for safety and health on the job. This gap in knowledge is one of the 21 priority areas for research under the National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA)—a framework crafted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and its partners to guide research into the next decade. This report was developed under NORA as the first attempt to develop a comprehensive research agenda for investigating and reducing occupational safety and health risks associated with the changing organization of work. Research and development needs identified in the agenda include (1) improved surveillance mechanisms to better track how the organization of work is changing, (2) accelerated research on safety and health implications of the changing organization of work, (3) increased research focus on organizational interventions to protect safety and health, and (4) steps to formalize and nurture organization of work as a distinctive field in occupational safety and health.

Lumwana is an open pit Copper mine located in the Northwestern Province of Zambia approximately 80 km west from the provincial capital of Solwezi, approximately 300 km northwest from the Copperbelt and 700 km northwest from the national capital of Lusaka. The mine has two major Copper deposits: Malundwe and Chimiwungo. Copper mineralization includes Chalcopyrite, Bornite and Chalcocite. In addition to Copper, these deposits also contain the undesirable element Uranium contained in vein hosted and disseminated Uranite. The processing plant was designed using conventional technologies: semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) and ball mill for grinding, and mechanical cells for rougher and cleaner flotation. Soon after commissioning in early 2009, it was recognised that two stages of conventional cleaning were unable to produce plant final Copper concentrates with the desired Uranium grades. Studies have shown that a significant quantity of liberated and fine Uranium particles (up to 80-90%) is recovered with the concentrate by entrainment. Lumwana Operations sought the use of the Jameson Cell technology after observing successful implementation at other sites in rectifying similar issues. In late 2009, Jameson Cell pilot-plant test work was conducted at the site and this quickly led to the installation of a full-scale B5400/18 model into the existing cleaner circuit. Inclusion of the Jameson Cell resulted in the plant being able to effectively produce clean and saleable concentrate with Uranium contents consistently below acceptable levels. Initially designed to be used as a cleaner scalper cell at the head of the existing conventional cell circuit, subsequent operational issues with the existing recleaner cells forced reconfiguration of the cleaner circuit and reintroduced the Jameson Cell for the recleaning duty. This paper reports the Lumwana Operation from the first two years of operation where it struggled to produce a saleable concentrate with Uranium grades below 150 ppm, which is the maximum allowable limit set out in the smelting contracts, to steps taken in the subsequent years to implement a satisfactory solution. The plant can now consistently produce a clean Copper concentrate with Uranium grades well below 130 ppm and the overall improvements implemented at site have seen the overall plant recovery improve by 1.3%.

The history of mineral processing in general and flotation in particular is long and has always been tied to mining methods of the day. Building on the ever-improving fundamental understanding of the underlying science, the most significant trend in flotation has been the putting into practice the learnings from trailblazers such as Professor Fuerstenau that has given the confidence that enabled an ever-increasing scale of operations. There is, however, doubt this ongoing trend is enough to maintain the economics against global trends such as that of falling grades, increasing mining costs, pressure on water supply and demand, rising energy demands needed for mineral processing, and a focus on whole of life value and mine legacy issues. In addition, we see that globally, the social license to operate for mining (and hence mineral processing) is far from secure and, at the very least, is under much more rigorous scrutiny. In this paper, we comment on the ramifications of broader uptake of more sustainable mining for mineral processing methods and address the specific question of whether recent progress in in-place recovery will lead to a timely breakthrough. The answer proposed is that this is possible in the next 10–20 years but in the meantime, the focus is just as likely to be on removal of waste (beneficiation) much earlier in circuits. Either way, mineral processing and flotation, as we know it, will change significantly.

As President of your Institute, I take pleasure in welcoming you to this convention, and to those who come from outside of the city, I take pleasure in Welcoming you to the city of Denver. This is the first convention at Denver in fifteen months. I hope that the annual rather than the semi-annual meetings will prove satisfactory to all, and that no mistake has been made in that respect. We are gathered together here to discuss problems common to all of us, and I am sure that we will profit by such discussion. We have with us, outside of the membership of our organization, representatives of two other organizations, Mr. Callbreath of the American Mining Congress, and Mr. Huntress of the National Coal Association. We will be honored by having them with us, and we shall expect to hear from them during this meeting.

VOLUME I Volume I of this three-volume report is the result of development of a comprehensive, coordinated approach to site data-acquisition activities to produce key plans and reports during the evaluation and development of a surface coal mine. A logic diagram illustrates activities in the planning and decision-making process from exploration through post-mining monitoring. The report briefly discusses major elements, other than the site environment, which influence development of mining and reclamation plans and refers to other readily available literature for details outside the scope of this study. The essence of the rationale is shown to be the 1 employment of necessary skills at the proper time to evaluate specific data ' requirements and integrate them into a cost-effective program to produce initial and major feasibility reports, mining, and reclamation plans, and the environmental impact assessment.

"IntroductionA process for production of magnesium by carbothermal reduction was developed at Padentheirm, Austria, by the Austro Americanische Magnesit Corporation& an independent investigation of this and other processes was started in 1937 by the Bureau of Mines at Pullman, Wash., with the cooperation of Washington State College. 10/ A preliminary study of the Radentheirm pro¬cess, as revealed by the meager information then available, demonstrated the following two major disadvantages,The use of hydrogen for shock cooling requires an enormous volume of gas - about 1,000 cubic feet for condensing each pound of metal as a pyrophoric dust which must be completely separated from this gas. Then if the gas is to be recycled for repeated use, the CO produced by the reduction reaction must be separated from the hydrogen. These separations are costly from the standpoint of equipment and operation. 11/The condensate is an impure, pyrophoric metal powder that must be purified and converted to coherent form. This is accomplished by distillation or sublimation of the metal. Distillation on a large scale involves difficulties inherent in the high boiling point (1,107° C.) and the chemical activity of the metal. To avoid these difficulties, the metal is sublimed at 600° C. and of very low pressure. This is quite easily carried out as a batch operation but is a costly procedure. A continuous sublimation process has not been accompli shed."

The Cross was presented to Capt. Bullock by the King, on Sept. 25, 1918. First Lieut. J. J. Cadot, in a letter sent to Mr. H. `V. Hardinge from France, says he has been at the "Front." He also mentions that the Boche "is a good sprinter."

Mining and metallurgy have had a long history in China, and resources there have always been considered promising. Under the People's Republic of China (PRC), a remarkable industrial renaissance is underway that should further gain momentum in the years ahead. Rapid development of minerals have not only brought the PRC prominence in industrialization, but also in world affairs. Chinese mineral developments, especially petroleum, have been increasingly in the news. Oil and gas may have great potential, but a very large coal industry is already in existence. The steel industry ranks fifth or sixth in the world. The PRC is also prominent in fertilizer, cement, and salt production. The export metals are well known. Also, the country is buying heavily in nonferrous base metals. The need to know and the intense interest in the subject have prompted this study. The world significance of Chinese minerals is pointed out. The history of growth and PRC's mineral supply position are reviewed. Evaluations are made of policy considerations and regional and technical factors affecting mineral development. PRC's mineral trade and efforts to obtain equipment, supplies, and know-how are assessed. Specific reviews are made of major mineral sectors, including coal and power, oil and gas, iron and steel, nonferrous metals, industrial minerals, and fertilizers and chemicals. The overall outlook is summarized.

Belt conveyor transfers are the most likely location for high wear rates and failures. Belt transfers are necessary to change the direction of conveyed material and will remain a part of belt conveyor systems into the future. Burden being accelerated due to fall and changes in direction from one system to the next, prevents steady state flow which introduces component fatigue. The conveyor belt is considered the greatest cost item over the life of a belt conveyor system and consumes considerable downtime to replace, therefore a financial incentive exists to preserve this high-cost item. Other issues created at the transfer include health risks of uncontained dust and product losses due to spillage. Additional consideration to support the belt is one way to improve the life of components and contain dust within the transfer chute. The humble impact cradle/bed has changed little over the years whilst conveyor systems have achieved ever greater flow rates. Further development of the impact cradle is an opportunity to reduce maintenance costs and increase uptime. The peak technology on the market for conventional impact belt support is the dynamic impact cradle, which ensures the belt support area under the chute allows for some dynamic travel, whilst also maintaining a consistent skirt board area. The impact energy at a transfer when installed with Kinder Australia’s dynamic impact belt support system was measured to further understand the forces involved and how they compare with static belt support systems. Adding further dynamic capacity to the load zone has been shown to increase belt life by at least 30 per cent. Other components also benefit from reducing impact energy in the transfer and the incorporation of polyurethane bushes at roller supports has been employed further increase roller and frame life. Kinder Australia has developed a unique and innovative range of belt support technologies that further promote dynamic travel whilst maintaining a consistent skirt board area without a significant increase in belt-friction tension. This technology combines slider rails with rollers that can absorb impact independently within the support system and/or utilising exotic slider materials to overcome high belt speeds and/or system capacities. The study refers to an area of about 70 km2, extended in the Italian Central Alps along the the San Giacomo Valley where different civil and mining works are present The regional geological setting is related to the Pennidic Nappe arrangement, characterized by the emplacement of sub-horizontal gneissic bodies resulting from the Mesoalpine isoclinalic folding of crystalline basements, emplaced throw East, and separated by matasedimentary cover units. The investigated geological rocks, belong to the ?Tambò?Unit, overlapped by its meta-sedimentary cover and by the ?Suretta? Unit. The tectonic contact gently dips to the E?NE. The valley, furrowed by the Liro Torrent, follows a N?S striking tectonic lineament, almost parallel to the nappe contact. A number of more then 70 sites, distributed in the studied area, were chosen and detailed structural and geomechanical field surveys were performed to characterize the rock masses, its intact rock and discontinuities. The procedure identifies the number of joint sets, their representative orientation, the set spacing, the type of movement, the amount of dilatation, the degree of alteration, the roughness coefficient, the presence and nature of infill. Rock mass quality indexes, such as the Rock Mass Rating (Bieniawski, 1989) or the Geological Strength Index (Hoek et al. 2002) have been evaluated in each surveyed site. The work is a contribute in assessing how the geometrical and geomechanical properties of the rock masses can be regarded as regionalized variables. The spatial distribution of these properties is a function of the geological and structural phenomena at which the rock masses have been subjected. The presented geostatistical analysis regards the spatial variation of the orientation of the most representative joint set.

Coal mining legislation makes frequent reference to æSafety Management SystemsÆ but there is a chronic shortage of useful guidance material as to how these might be applied to hazardous exposures. Several studies have indicated that for each death that is reported as a result of an industrial æaccidentÆ, there are five deaths that caused by occupational exposures. Because the deaths from occupational exposures do not occur on site and often well after employment has ceased, they are generally unreported. Improved access to mortality data from coroners, the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare and superannuation service providers (early claims from death and total permanent disability), has given rise to some analysis of death and disability data that provides evidence that there are emerging opportunities to develop and improve safety management systems for hazardous occupational exposures. Issues explored include how safety management systems might be developed in relation to dusts and chemicals and other hazardous exposures to ensure the risk of disorders with long latency periods are reliably assessed and the exposures effectively managed. The current standards and guidelines which refer to safety management systems in general or to management of exposure related hazards are examined. Many standards are based on dose-response studies that provide for an acceptable percentage of workers to suffer adverse health outcomes. An alternative management system might be to apply dose-response relations to health surveillance to identify æat riskÆ individuals and effectively manage health and related safety risk at an early stage.

This publication is designed to be helpful in promoting health and safety in tunneling and related operations. The format has been selected and arranged to provide a condensed guide for safety personnel, inspection and investigative agencies, design and project engineers, and others responsible for the health and safety of workmen. All the precautionary measures recommended are based on actual conditions observed, from investigations of fatal or serious accidents, and from research conducted to find ways and means of alleviating hazards and unhealthful conditions. Many of the recommended rules are included in State laws and in the general safety requirements of the construction industry. Explanatory, descriptive, and qualifying information has been largely omitted in this publication to keep basic data in more useful and compact form. Included in the appendixes are special precautions for gassy (methane atmospheres) tunnels and tunnels where petroleum products are encountered.

"The important task of metallurgical accounting that used to be done manually is being more and more automated. Currently available solutions can generate accounting reports without human intervention or almost. However, the practical conditions for fully delivering the promised benefits of those solutions are sometimes overlooked either by end-users or by integrators. The mere fact of filling reports with values satisfying several constraints such as mass conservation constraints does not, by itself, ensure a high quality metallurgical balance. Since managers make decisions based on these reports, it is logical that the metallurgical balance performance be monitored and retrofits be made if necessary. Such retrofits may involve modifications to the measurement strategy or the reduction of the spatial resolution of the material balance model. This requires an estimability and redundancy analysis (ERA) tool to assess the feasibility of the modified model. Since determining by hand the estimability and redundancy of a set of non measured and measured variables is not trivial, even for a medium-sized mineral processing plant, a dedicated ERA tool brings valuable assistance to the metallurgist in charge. The present paper aims first at explaining how a state of the art metallurgical balance is a key enabler for the adoption of a smart process plants paradigm (SPPP) in mineral processing. Then, the fundamentals behind the building of an ERA algorithm are introduced and illustrated by two examples. Finally, the role of an ERA tool in achieving state of the art metallurgical accounting and how it contributes to delivering additional value are discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe Smart Process Plants Paradigm (SPPP)Mineral processors have seen an increase lately in external pressures toward operating performance improvements. Indeed, the globalization of the mining business is a key driver to becoming more productive, more responsive to market changes, to improving corporate governance and reporting standards. This U.S. Bureau of Mines report describes the development of a yielding steel post for underground mine support. The report covers concept development, laboratory tests, modifications, and field evaluations. The objective of this work was to develop a stiff support member capable both of supporting high loads and yielding when excessive amounts of mine entry closure were present. The 6-to 7-ft steel post was designed to yield nearly 2 ft while maintaining a 45-ton (force) load. The post is a three-piece unit consisting of top and bottom telescoping legs and a separate foot bracket. It develops its load-carrying characteristics when the lower pipe, with an attached interference ring, is forced into the larger top pipe. Laboratory tests were used to determine critical loads and post performance for various post lengths. Field tests showed that the posts could perform in actual mining conditions. The post has the ability to provide support in highly yielding ground and also, because of its slender profile, enhance ventilation and provide more area for travelways and escapeways. The design is simple enough to allow for fabrication at most mine shop facilities.

The organic, inorganic, and radiological characteristics of airborne aerosols have been measured as a function of particle size in controlled atmosphere test chambers and operating uranium mines. Concentrations of benzo(a)pyrene in two mines ranged from 26 to 57 ng/m3 of air. The carbon chain length of adsorbed n-alkanes was correlated with particle size. Normal mining activities produced an ore dust aerosol with mass median aerodynamic diameter (MMAD) greater than 2 µm. The elements Na, Al, Si, K, Ca, Ti, V, Fe, and U exhibited elemental ratios similar to bulk ore and had comparable MMAD's. The S, Zn, and Pb were higher in aerosols than bulk ore and were associated with smaller MMAD particulates. Radon daughter particle size distributions were influenced by the kinds of particulates

Contract H0177044 included three objectives; (1) consolidate, maintain, and distribute information on STE approved lighting systems; (2) develop and present one-day seminars on underground mine lighting; (3) determine direct labor and hardware costs associated with the installation of mine illumination systems. All objectives were completed with results as follows: Task I - A file containing 1350 Statements of Test and Evaluation (STE) for all types of underground equipment was developed and publicized throughout the coal fields, A total of 40 requests for STE information was received and processed. Task II and III - A series of 50 seminars was scheduled and presented to 942 attendees throughout the coal fields. The seminars were well received and attendees indicated the information presented would be helpful in bringing their equipment into compliance. Holding a series of seminars in the coal fields, instead of a few in population centers, was favored by attendees. Task IV - Installation cost data obtained on 415 lighting systems indicate that the factors which most affect installation costs are higher hardware cost for DC powered systems and slightly higher manpower requirements for systems installed underground. Based on these data, the total cost to industry of retrofitting existing underground equipment could range up to $50 million.

"Economies of scale and the variable characteristics of many large ore deposits have resulted in grinding installations using very large SAG mills fitted with variable speed drives. Low-aspectratio single-stage SAG mills were introduced in South Africa to process the consistent gold bearing Witwatersrand quartzites. Elsewhere, circuits were patterned after the more conventional North American circuits with high-aspect-ratio SAG mills followed by ball mills. This paper provides information on two recent Gold Fields group installations covering both types of SAG mill in large, single-stage applications. While these operations process similar tonnages, the mills represent opposite ends of the aspect-ratio spectrum. The Tarkwa mine in Ghana employs a low-aspect 27’ x 42’ 14MW SAG mill. The St Ives mine in Australia operates a conventional 36’ x 18’ 13.4MW SAG mill.INTRODUCTIONGold Fields is one of the world’s largest gold producers with annual production of approximately 4.2 million ounces. The Gold Fields group has operations in South Africa, Ghana and Australia, along with numerous exploration sites and advanced projects in several other countries. SINCE the beginning of this century the non-ferrous mineral industry has contributed $17,809,-000,000 to the economic growth of Canada. To contemplate the vast amount of investment capital required and the resultant beneficial distribution of these billions of dollars for labour, transportation, supplies, taxes and dividends, challenges the imagination. It is the purpose of this paper, (a) to trace the development of the industry since its formative period to the present; (b) to discuss the current situation and problems; and ( c) to attempt to peer into the hazy future. Although there are 21 metals currently being produced in Canada which are classified as non-ferrous, or as alloying metals, copper, lead, zinc, nickel-the metals which will be discussed in this paper-constitute almost 60 per cent of their total value. ;The story

Crystalline silica (quartz, cristobalite, and tridyrnite) is regulated by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) because of its potential for causing debilitating but nonmalignant lung diseases. In 1987, the International Agency for Research Against Cancer (IARC) conducted a review of the health literature and concluded that crystalline silica was a probable human carcinogen. As a result of this finding, OSHA was required to regulate crystalline silica under its Hazard Communication Standard (HCS). The standard requires that all materials handled by OSHA-regulated facilities be labeled according to the requirements of RCS and that workers receive proper training on the handling of the material if the crystalline silica content equals or exceeds 0.1 weight percent (0.1 %). MSHA currently is considering enacting its own RCS. This will be similar to OSHA's RCS. If the standard is enacted, most mineral producers will have to determine the respirable monitor filter and bulk crystalline silica contents of their ores and products so that workers and/or customers will know whether they are in compliance with the 0.1% HCS and/or the OSHA permissible exposure level (PEL) of 50 µg for an 8-hour workday for respirable crystalline silica as determined from monitor samples. Two major concerns with the RCS are the widespread occurrence of crystalline silica in nature and the suitability of current technology for routinely determining crystalline silica concentrations at the 0.1 % RCS level. Most ores are extracted from silica-bearing deposits and it is a common constituent of rocks and soils. OSHA's RCS will have the greatest impact on the producers of crushed stone, diatomite, dimension stone, gravel, industrial sand, perlite, pumice, pyrophyllite, sand, and talc because these materials frequently are shipped directly from the mill to the customer. MSHA's RCS would affect nearly all mineral producers. Those producers that have crystalline silica present in concentrations near the 0.1 % cutoff point will have the most difficulty with the analysis. Crystalline silica can be quantified at the 0.1 % level by X-ray diffractometry in simple systems containing one, two, and possibly three minerals if (1) none of the accessory minerals has X-ray diffraction reflections that coincide or overlap with those of crystalline silica and (2) the standard has a particle size distribution and crystallinity similar to those of the sample. In some instances, it may not be possible to determine the crystalline silica content of a sample with any degree of certainty using the recommended regulatory protocol. In all cases, it is recommended that a qualified mineralogist identify the minerals in a sample prior to any regulatory analysis. Additionally, the uncertainty as to whether some silica polymorphs should be classified as crystalline or noncrystalline and the suitability of metastable high-temperature standards, such as cristobalite and tridyrnite, for regulatory analysis at ambient temperatures should be addressed further. This overview is written both to highlight these problems and to serve as a guide for analysts, regulators, and industry personnel who are involved in the crystalline silica issue. It also covers some of the difficulties and/or shortcomings in quantifying crystalline silica, such as the ubiquitous mineral quartz, in the workplace.

"(1) The radiological appearances of pneumokoniosis on the Kolar Gold Field is described in detail. The characteristic abnormality is the. presence of a diffuse, fine annular and punctate mottling. (2) The frequency of symptoms could not be determined with any degree of accuracy, but it is believed that symptoms are absent and there is no incapacity until profuse radiological mottling is present, i.e., after long exposure to dust. (3) There is an increased predisposition to tuberculosis, which, if it occurs, affects the prognosismost unfavourably.(4) Pathological examination shows that the radiological mottling is due to the presence inthe lung of numerous small dust-cdll aggregates (up to T5 mm. in dia.) deposited around the smaller bronchioles and blood-vessels.(5) The dust-cell aggregates are relatively acellular but when tuberculosis is superadded thereis an excessive cellular and fibrotic reaction.(6) The difficulties of defining the radiological and pathological appearances of early pneumokoniosisare discussed.(7) The incidence of pneumokoniosis in 7,653 workmen with 5 or more years’ undergroundservice was 43-75%, but it is suggested that in future the incidence will be appreciably lower.(8) The methods of- dust production and the chemistry of mine dust are described. It isshown that the free silica-content of air-borne mine -dust is relatively low.(9) The aetiology'of the pneumokoniotic lesion is discussed."
