The slurry wall technique has undergone an evolution from its invention to its today’s status. In the early stages slurry walls were built with cable grab, later on with much stronger hydraulic grab and last but not least with the use of the cutter technique. The cutter allows thick walls with high verticality to extreme depths through hard soil and rock formations. With the rising demand of the construction of watertight diaphragm walls different joint systems have been developed. In addition to the rapid development of excavation systems it was necessary to improve slurry treatment and desanding plants, especially in conjunction with high performance trench cutters. Deep mixing methods can be used economically for the construction of cut-off or excavation support walls where other systems such as traditional soldier beams and lagging walls would yield unsatisfactory performance, where the installation of vibrated or driven sheet piles could cause vibration induced settlements and where concrete diaphragm walls would be time consuming and expensive. The new CSM method can largely replace the more conventional single or multiple auger methods of soil mixing or jet grouting. The cutter tool is similar to a cutter used in diaphragm walls or cut-off walls and is operated with a Kelly mounted on a drilling rig or rope suspended on a crane jib or mast of a base carrier. With this system much deeper walls can be installed and even hard soil layers can be penetrated.

The Golden Cross, low-sulfidation, epithermal deposit shows a number of features that are directly or indirectly related to boiling hydrothermal fluids. Occurrences of lattice calcite and their quartz pseudomorph equivalents in veins, and occurrences of adularia in veins and in the surrounding altered rocks in the vicinity of ore, are both direct evidence of deposition in the presence of boiling hydrothermal fluids. Loss of carbon dioxide causes calcite deposition (platy variety) near the level of first boiling, while adularia deposits due to the attendant pH increase along the cooling flow path. Indirect evidence of boiling include crustiform-colloform quartz banding, late massive calcite veins, clay-carbonate alteration in the shallow and peripheral parts of the ore zone, and the restricted vertical interval of precious metal mineralisation. The colloform quartz banding strongly resembles the banding in amorphous silica deposits found in geothermal surface pipes. This implies that fluids ascending the Empire Vein structure were saturated in amorphous silica. If so, then they must have undergone phase separation, which initiated at considerable depth (e.g. =1000 m) and very hot temperatures (e.g. =300¦C). On the basis of stable isotope data, late massive calcite veins appear to have deposited from CO2-rich steam-heated waters. Calcite deposited along heating paths as these waters descended into the upflow zone during late stage collapse of the hydrothermal plume. In active systems, such steam heated waters form by deep boiling. The high CO2 contents of these waters promote hydrolytic alteration and the formation of clay-carbonate alteration. Reaction path modelling using CHILLER and a deep, Broadlands-Ohaaki water as an analogue, shows that minerals deposit along boiling flow paths over discrete spatial intervals. Calcite and adularia deposit near the site of first boiling, followed by gold and then by amorphous silica. For deep boiling starting at 300¦C, these minerals deposit over a path length that exceeds 1000 m. The distribution of banded quartz and gold at Golden Cross are consistent with such a boiling model. However, the elevation of first boiling must have fluctuated over 500 m to account for the coincidence of lattice quartz (pseudomorphs of platy calcite) and adularia, crustiform-colloform silica and gold over distances of a few centimeters in veins. We deduce that a downward propagating boiling front and expansion of two-phase flashing in a flowing water column occurred during episodes of high vertical permeability and fluid flux in the Empire vein structure.

This paper describes some of the results of a project for the design and demonstration of subsidence monitoring systems for underground coal mines. The project was designed to test monitoring systems described in an earlier feasibility report (O'Rourke and others, 1979). General objectives of the project were to develop reliable cost- effective monitoring systems for use above caving- type mining operations, over supported mines, and in urban undermined areas. Topics selected for discussion in this paper include a description of the instrumentation systems, the site conditions, problems of installation, resulting recommendations and an over- view of subsidence performance data obtained. There were some particularly difficult problems of installation to overcome at this site. Some of these could be experienced at any surface or under- ground project, others are probably more directly related to Western coal fields. The U.S. Bureau of Mines and the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) are participating jointly in a research program to evaluate the strength characteristics and air-leakage resistance of various proposed seal designs for use in underground coal mines. The full-scale seals were constructed in the USBM's experimental mine at the Lake Lynn Laboratory, air-leakage tested, then subjected to pressure pulses of 20 psig or greater. In experiments prior to this study, seven seal designs using solid-concrete blocks were tested. Only the standard-type seal passed the explosion and air-leakage criteria. Tests also were performed on four seals constructed with low-density foam blocks. All four of these seal designs withstood the pressure pulse. In more recent studies, nine cementitious foam seal designs of varying thicknesses and densities were investigated. Six of the nine designs successfully survived the explosion overpressures. Six wood-block convergence seals also have been tested. The typical 3-ft-thick, wood-block seal design currently used in many coal mines did not maintain its integrity, in the absence of convergence forces, following the explosion test. Five modified wood-block seals successfully withstood the 20-psig pressure pulse. Based on these tests, three alternative seal construction materials, cementitious foam, low-density foam block, and wood, have been approved by MSHA for use in underground coal mines.

Pyrite depression with prolonged pre-conditioning treatment in high salinity water has attracted much of researchers’ interest in recent years considering the increased utilisation of multiple stage flotation, closed water circuits, clay minerals, and sea water in flotation plants. In this study, the role of calcium (Ca)/magnesium (Mg) precipitates in stabilising the dissociative ferric hydroxy-xanthate (FHX), and its effect on modifying the balance of hydrophobic/hydrophilic species on the pyrite surface were primarily investigated. The total amount of extractable Fe-bearing species on pyrite concentrates and tailings after floatability test was quantitively determined using ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) extraction tests combined with inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). A more evident accumulation of extracted-Fe in pyrite concentrates rather than it in pyrite tailings was observed at both pH 9 and 10.5 when pyrite was pre-conditioned in Ca/Mg-bearing solutions for 360 min. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy showed the main xanthate derivatives changed from di-xanthogen (1155 cm-1 ) to FHX (1167 cm-1 ) on the oxidised pyrite samples that were preconditioned in Ca/Mg-bearing solutions. Scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectrometry (SEM-EDS) suggested the preferential accumulation of FHX upon secondary Ca/Mg-bearing precipitates as reflected by the higher Fe/S ratio together with the decrease of O element herein after xanthate conditioning. Although the hydrophilic secondary Ca/Mg/Fe-bearing minerals on the pyrite surface generally deteriorate pyrite’s floatability, the upper section of these secondary hydrophilic aggregates is partially covered by FHX alongside with further multilayer-adsorbed di-xanthogen. The precipitated Ca/Mg-bearing precipitates promotes the immobilisation of dissociated FHX derived from the reaction among iron oxyhydroxides and xanthate anions upon the localised secondary Ca/Mg/Fe-bearing minerals via acid–base complexation. Therefore, this phenomenon alleviates the hydrophilic modification of secondary Ca/Mg/Fe-bearing minerals to pyrite considering the immobilised FHX upon localised precipitates shows a slight hydrophobicity, and meanwhile, the upper FHX benefits the multilayer adsorption of di-xanthogen via the interaction among their inner hydrophobic alkyl chains.

Today, a typical blaster is likely to wear many hats, including, but not limited to, supervisor, risk manager, safety coordinator, explosives engineer, communicator, as well as professional decision maker. Simply put, a blaster in the new millennium is an all encompassing blast site manager. As you know, accidents on the blast site can range from blast crew injuries to blasting incidents resulting from vibration, flyrock, misfires, etc. Not surprising, the incidents can quite often be traced back to direct preventable human action on the blast site. They can, however, frequently be avoided, if responsibly identified early and managed properly by an efficient blast site manager. Your company cannot afford to simply employ blasters; good blast site managers are necessary to produce the safest results possible.

Mine drainage and mine reclamation are topics of major interest to the mining industry, federal and local governments, and the general public. This publication and its companion three volumes are the proceedings of a conference held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, April 24-29, 1994. There were twelve sessions (69 papers) that dealt with mine drainage, including modeling, geochemistry, prediction, treatment, control strategies, characterization, hydrology, and case studies. These sessions comprise volumes 1 and 2. The six sessions (34 papers) that dealt with reclamation and revegetation of disturbed lands are included in volume 3. Volume 4 includes the six sessions (34 papers) that dealt with such topical issues as fires at abandoned mine sites, subsidence, hydrology, mine wastes, and policy. Poster session presentations are represented by 49 papers and 92 abstracts that have been placed in the back of volumes 2, 3, and 4, consistent with the subject of that volume.

This work goes beyond the general perception of how the well-known mine to mill process can be applied, by applying deeper knowledge along the mining chain. Grade deportment and dilution are considered at the mining stage, and modelled with the new SMI blast movement simulator, linking with the block model data. Assessing the shift to a considerably more competent section of the orebody is quantified via substantial milling trials at standard and higher-intensity blasts. These were stockpiled for batch processing through the mill to ensure feed integrity. The trial work included operating the mill at widely different fillings to develop Grindcurve milling responses. Additionally, model informed process control is initiated via a mill prediction tool.It has been found that accounting for blast movement for the higher intensity blasts could generate additional value of around $1.5M per blast. With the high-intensity blast and changing mill control, the plant was easily able to exceed projected mill throughputs with the far more competent Pipeline ore. Strategies to shift the workload and debottleneck the milling circuit were proposed and proven during the milling trials, demonstrating an increase in throughput of 7 per cent despite running at a lower SAG mill speed, and potential of 16 per cent for increasing the SAG mill to standard operating speed. A number of process improvement opportunities have been identified to enhance current productivity and ensure long term capability to process the considerably more competent future ores. All of this is being linked in with the major digitisation program at the Barrick Cortez site, with an objective of linking all the data into a mine-wide process optimisation system, that can embed the processes by providing process-wide data access and production support via the future dynamic models linking ore body knowledge to productivity along the full process chain.CITATION:Powell, M, Yahyaei, M, Geronimo, J, Yussupova, Z and Kumar, P, 2018. Tip post-grouting of bored pile (drilled shaft) foundations refers to a method where cementitious grout is injected beneath the tip of a shaft to improve the overall performance of the constructed foundation. This technique, when performed satisfactorily and in the appropriate ground conditions, enhances axial load-displacement performance by improving the mobilization of pile’s resistance. Potential benefits associated with tip post-grouting include reduced settlement under loading, better alignment of load transfer curves, and improved ground beneath the base of the bored pile. However, to be able to realize the benefits attributed to this method, the design, construction, of both the bored pile and the post-grouting system must meet a minimum level for quality assurance. The various factors affecting the successful installation and performance of a bored pile (e.g., workmanship, base cleanliness, borehole integrity, and concrete placement) have been discussed by numerous practitioners and researchers in the available technical literature. For a conventional (i.e., ungrouted) bored pile, acceptance is based on a combination of visual inspection, material testing, and the results of integrity and/or performance testing of the constructed pile. A properly executed tip post-grouting program can be a relatively comprehensive and complex process, which is typically evaluated throughout the construction process based on the results of prior projects and/or on test pile(s) at the particular site. For tip post- grouting programs, verification procedures and acceptance criteria should be established during and incorporated into the design process to ensure design intent and objectives are achieved. Project specifications should be produced to ensure performance requirements are achieved. This paper will present and discuss factors affecting the successful execution of tip post-grouting, including grouting criteria, instrumentation, reliability and uncertainty with the method and outcome, and verification and acceptance. INTRODUCTION Constructing bored piles (drilled shafts) is increasingly more challenging given the lack of ideal site locations, tight project site confines, difficult or restricted access, greater demands on drilling equipment, and close proximity to adjacent structures. To evaluate the feasibility of bored piles as an appropriate foundation system, a myriad of factors is evaluated during design, including site conditions and constraints, budgeting and scheduling, reliability and risk exposure, presence of and depth to adequate load bearing soils/rock, and the magnitude of the imposed loading. Moreover, updated design codes increased load demand per element, and improved material strengths have led to more complex foundation designs, larger foundation elements, and significant increases in load magnitude. Monopile (monoshaft) foundations have been utilized where one large bored pile is used in lieu of a group of piles connected via a pile cap. In addition, to accommodate the design criteria, site conditions, and imposed loading, the geometry of the bored piles being designed and installed have been as large as 13 feet (4 m) or greater in diameter and to depths in excess of 260 feet (80 m).

"Rio Tinto Fer et Titane processes the ore extracted from the Lac Tio orebody to concentrate the hemo-ilmenite (FeO.TiO2-Fe2O3) mineral that is subsequently smelted to produce pig iron and titanium oxide slag. The ore is crushed, heat treated (roasted) and concentrated using dry magnetic separators. This paper describes a model to predict the magnetic susceptibility of the roasted ore and its behaviour in the magnetic separation plant. The model uses a classification of the ore as a function of the size and magnetic susceptibility of the particles. A subsequent division into mineral species allows the simulation of the magnetic separation process. The model is used to assess various operating options when process disturbances occur.INTRODUCTIONOre processing operations consist of ore size reduction followed by the recovery of valuable species in a concentrate that is subsequently sold for its minerals or metal content. The concentration processes are based on the physical and/or chemical properties of the minerals contained in the ore. Flotation is typically used to recover minerals of base metals such as copper, zinc, lead or nickel. Iron ore and other dense minerals are typically concentrated by gravity separation processes. Magnetic separation uses the magnetic properties of the minerals to concentrate magnetite and other minerals, to clean coal concentrate and to recycle ferrosilicon for dense separation processes (Brophy, 1985).Magnetic separators can be divided into low and high intensity separators and high gradient magnetic separators (Gillet, 2008). Most of the low gradient magnetic separators are built as rotary drums that are operated in wet or dry conditions. Dry magnetic drum separators are used by Rio Tinto Fer et Titane in Sorel-Tracy, Canada to concentrate hemo-ilmenite from the ore extracted at the Lac Tio Lake mine near Havre St-Pierre, Canada. The analysis of production data suggests that process improvement could be achieved by identifying key variables for the control of the magnetic separation circuit and/or by modification to the circuit flowsheet. The use of a process model was considered to be an effective approach to conduct a preliminary analysis of the circuit with a view toward process optimization. However, the literature contains few detailed studies dealing with the modelling of magnetic separation processes."

Well planned and executed environmental management plans can reduce life-of-mine operating costs and the need to deal with major environmental issues at the time of mine closure. With proper planning during the exploration, feasibility and execution phases of a project, final closure costs can be reduced. The reduction of closure costs should be considered during exploration and initial feasibility studies and when process facilities, waste rock dumps and tailings impoundments are designed. During the mining of the resource, closure cost reduction will depend on effective and efficient environmental management plans for ongoing land clearance, segregation of mine waste materials, management of mine site water and workshop wastewaters, and the establishment of progressive rehabilitation strategies. These issues are the responsibility of planning, production, technical support and maintenance personnel at an operating site. The successful implementation of environmental plans will ensure that all impacts are reduced and that closure issues with major cost implications are addressed prior to closure of the mine.

Over the last decade, instrumentation has been developed that allows the application of seismic reflection methods to groundwater and engineering problems. At the Geological Survey of Canada, we have been developing and testing shallow reflection techniques for mapping the bedrock topography and structure within the overburden. We have attempted to develop methods which can be implemented with a minimum investment in equipment and computing capabilities. The data are recorded on a l&channel engineering seismograph, using a single high-frequency geophone per channel, and a hammer or in-hole shotgun (“Buffalo gun”) as the seismic source. Processing and display of the data can be accomplished on an Apple II+ or IIe microcomputer and an Epson wide-track dot-matrix printer.

Lime was a highly useful commodity thousands of years before the simple chemistry of its manufacturing process was known. The employment of lime for agriculture, building, and even certain essentially chemical purposes is so old that its origin is among the unrecorded details of man's first ventures into the manufacture and use of prepared substances. Lime is a most versatile material and consequently has come to be widely utilized in modern civilization. Immediately before the depression of the early 1930's the annual production of lime in the United States was more than 4 million tons, valued at 33 to 42 mil-million dollars. This output was sold to many industries, so many that mere enumeration becomes tedious.

"In this paper, the list analysis of GHG emissions of aluminum industry was conducted based on the data from typical electrolytic aluminum plants of a China’s northwest province. The results show that under the conditions of average anode effect coefficient as 0.16 times/(cell• day) and anode duration as 5 minutes per day, equivalent emissions of CO2 reached 1.23 ton per ton of aluminum, in which PFC emissions accounted for about 71%. Compared with foreign advanced level, which is 0.87 ton per ton of aluminum under the conditions of average anode effect coefficient as 0.01 times/(cell•day) and anode duration as 0.46 minutes per day, there is much room for China’s aluminum industry to reduce GHG emissions. Since anode effect plays an important role on PFCs generation in electrolytic aluminum process, how to control anode effect strictly becomes the key factor for remarkable reduction of GHG emissions in China’s aluminum industry.IntroductionTechnology of aluminum electrolysis is a mature and efficient process of aluminum production. Due to the huge demand on aluminum worldwide, so resource consumption, energy consumption and pollutant emissions in the process of aluminum production are still large. The global output of aluminum reached 45193 kt in 2012. A large amount of CO2 and PFCs are produced in the process of aluminum production, and the greenhouse effect and environmental pollution caused by emissions of them is a concern. PFCs belong to a powerful greenhouse gas, thus emission reduction of PFCs is very important for aluminum electrolysis industry. At present, China's aluminum production accounts for about 33% of the world's aluminum production, and controlling PFCs emission has become the key point of pollution control of aluminum electrolysis industry in China [1].Taking the case of a typical electrolytic aluminum plant of a China’s northwest province, this paper studies the list analysis of GHG emissions of aluminum industry in China. GHG emissions of a China’s northwest province were calculated through investigating existing situation of aluminum electrolysis industry in the province, knowing capacity, output, main production technology and equipment level of aluminum electrolysis industry, and using the calculation framework and methods of GHG emissions of aluminum electrolysis industry, which were put forward by the intergovernmental panel on climate change (IPCC), the international aluminum association and other organizations at home and abroad. The list analysis of GHG emissions of aluminum electrolysis industry will offer useful information in promoting emission reduction of GHG in aluminum electrolysis industry, improve the efficiency of energy utilization."

A Good Product Range - So What! While in terms of water, waste management and environment protectrion, the Gippsland Basin may appear to have a good product range, what does this really mean? What it means is that, like any product range, the virtues of the product range must be sold and accepted by a majority of the public. The social, economic and environmental benefits of any enterprise using these products must be sold and accepted by the regional population. Many a budding entrepreneur has failed because he assumed that the public would accept his product, so good did it appear to be! However, we know that such an assumption must be avoided and that a great deal of time and effort needs to be invested in promoting and gaining acceptance of a product to ensure a long term and viable market.

Proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells generate electricity by reacting hydrogen and oxygen. A thin, bipolar electrode material provides a medium for electron exchange with the electrolyte, alternately serving as anode at the hydrogen-rich side and cathode at the oxygen-rich side. Stainless steels have sufficient corrosion resistance to qualify as bipolar plate materials. However, the protective chromite layer increases the contact resistance, the battery’s internal resistance; and thus, decreases the electrical efficiency of the fuel cell. A heat-treatment is proposed and investigated via simulation by ThermoCalc / Dictra and experimentally, to generate a sufficient quantity of conducting surface carbides that breach the protective layer. Once carbide growth is arrested, a subsequent heat-treatment is also needed at a higher temperature to restore the corrosion resistance by filling-in the Cr-depleted layer (sensitization) around the carbide particles.

"Adoption of the International Cyanide Management Code, regulatory requirements and community concerns have increased the need to implement suitable cyanide destruction processes at gold operations to meet ever more stringent discharge limits. As standards set for the allowable concentrations of cyanide, cyanide compounds and other contaminants may vary from country to country, jurisdiction to jurisdiction, and even from site to site, there is no “one size fits all” technological solution. Currently the most common cyanide destruction processes used in industry are sulfur dioxide/oxygen, hydrogen peroxide and Caro’s acid. Regardless of the process used, cyanide destruction plants must be reliable and achieve permit guidelines at all times. The selection of the most appropriate cyanide destruction process for an operation depends on several factors, including permit discharge requirements, tailings chemistry, location, site-specific climatic conditions and size of the operation. Only after considering all these factors together can the most effective approach be selected to achieve the permit guidelines economically and technically feasible. Finally performing the correct test work program is the most important step to ensure that the correct process design criteria can be determined to accurately calculate capital and operating costs.IntroductionThe adoption of the International Cyanide Management Code in 2005, stricter regulatory requirements and community concerns prompted by environmental incidents involving cyanide have increased the need to implement cyanide destruction processes at gold and silver operations.Process solutions associated with the extraction of gold and silver contain several forms of cyanide. The most toxic form of cyanide is free cyanide, which can be present as a dissociated cyanide anion (CN-) or gaseous or aqueous HCN. Weak or moderately stable cyanide complexes such as those of zinc, copper and nickel are classified as weak acid dissociable (CNWAD). Although less toxic than free cyanide, weak acid dissociable cyanide complexes are considered “ecologically sensitive” forms of cyanide and are regulated in most jurisdictions. In practice, reported WAD cyanide values are comprised of both free cyanide and weak acid dissociable cyanide complexes. Cyanide complexes with gold, mercury, cobalt and iron are referred to as strong acid dissociable complexes (CNSAD) and are much more stable even under mildly acidic conditions. Another term commonly used in cyanide chemistry is total cyanide, which represents all cyanide compounds present in solution, with the exception of cobalt complexes. Total cyanide levels in solutions are in most cases higher than WAD cyanide values and the difference between the two usually indicates the presence of iron-cyanide compounds. Typically, in Canada CNTOTAL levels cannot exceed 1 mg/L in solutions."

A Seam deposit User oriented Mine Planning System (SUMPS) was developed by The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited (BHP) at its head office in Melbourne. It is one of the computer mine planning systems developed by the Corporate Data Processing (CDP) section of BHP. To date it has been employed in the feasibility study of four coal prospects for the BHP Group, including Gregory in central Queensland û Ham and Van Hoorn (1978). It was also used in detailed short term mine planning for Gregory. A recent application was in the feasibility study of Saxonvale, a multi seam coal deposit in New South Wales with seams up to 20 m thick. The other two applications of SUMPS were also on thick multi seam coal deposits. Development of programs for the underground subsection of SUMPS is continuing. SUMPS was developed and implemented on mini computers with graphics and plotting peripherals. The company's philosophy towards computing is one of centralized development and project planning, with transfer of hardware and software to site once the mine becomes operational. Support of the site's system continues from head office which is continually involved in development of SUMPS and issuing revision updates to sites. The users, as well as programmers, were mostly geologists and mining engineers. This helped to ensure rapid, successful implementation. The broad approach of this system was to use interactively the specialist skills and interpretative abilities of the user mining engineers and geologists with the data manipulation abilities of the computer. It is an integrated system which covers geological exploration, deposit modelling, mine planning and production scheduling. An important feature of the system is that the user has full interactive control over each function through a graphics terminal where applicable.

"Commissioning of a circulating dry scrubber (CDS) plant was recently completed at an existing facility in Québec, Canada. The CDS plant treats the sulphur dioxide off-gas emitted from rotary kilns in order to meet increasingly stringent environmental requirements. This installation enables the existing facility to reduce their sulphur emissions by over 90%.Proper planning of the different commissioning stages and staffing an integrated team are the most important factors required for a successful plant start-up. A strong Operational Readiness plan must be in place as early as the start of construction in order to ensure a smooth transition from commissioning to operations. Plant performance can meet or exceed performance criteria within the required timeframe if the proper group dynamic and good communication is established between construction, commissioning and operations teams.The road blocks encountered are often from systems that one assumes will operate without trouble such as air-conditioning, or design assumptions that were taken years earlier in feasibility process stages, namely the capacity of existing systems that will connect the new plant to the existing facilities. The challenges associated with rectifying these issues in addition to the requirements to properly start-up and operate a new plant without impacting production are great, and it is imperative to have the necessary resources to react quickly to any problems.IntroductionCommissioning of a circulating dry scrubber (CDS) plant was recently completed at an existing facility in Québec, Canada. The combined, de-dusted off-gas from multiple kilns is sent to the CDS, which acts as an entrained fluid bed, where the gas is contacted with a water mist, re-circulated solids and hydrated lime. The SO2 from the gas stream and the available calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) from the hydrated lime dissolve in the water and react to ultimately form calcium sulphites and gypsum. The solid residue (referred to as CDS residue), is the primary by-product of the process."

"Construction of foundation elements in an urban environment is often complicated by multiple constraints such as existing foundations, utility conflicts, maintenance and protection of traffic on high volume roadways, low overhead clearances, and vibration and displacement monitoring to reduce risks of impact to existing facilities. Micropiles are commonly a preferred foundation alternative in an urban setting to mitigate some of these risks. This paper presents examples in which micropiles helped reduce risk in an urban setting on the two subject infrastructure improvement projects. The case studies presented include the Verrazano Narrows Bridge HOV and Bus Ramp Improvements in Brooklyn, NY and the Kosciuszko Bridge Replacement in Queens and Brooklyn, NY. The paper details the micropile design, how risks were mitigated, and the complications to each of these projects associated with the urban setting.INTRODUCTIONThe paper begins with background information about the Verrazano Narrows Bridge HOV and Bus Ramp Improvements Project, followed by background information for the Kosciuszko Bridge Replacement Project. This introductory background information is followed by discussion of the urban site constraints, which controlled the foundation type selection for both projects. In closing, the paper discusses the micropile design process, load testing, and construction.VERRAZANO NARROWS BRIDGE HOV & BUS RAMP IMPROVEMENTS BACKGROUNDProject ScopeThe project consists of two new ramps; one designated for HOV / Bus traffic between Staten Island and the Gowanus Expressway, and one to be utilized for storing the barrier transfer vehicle. Also included is the complete reconstruction of Ramps B and F to accommodate horizontal and vertical alignment clearances from the new ramps, removal of the median of the upper level to add one lane, utilities improvements, stormwater improvements, and miscellaneous structural repairs. The new HOV / Bus Ramp was designed for reversible traffic flow to accommodate the demand of the peak traffic direction by movable barrier.Geotechnical / Foundation Engineering ScopeThe geotechnical work included a desk study review of existing plans, geotechnical reports, and geologic maps. This data was subsequently supplemented with a subsurface exploration program. Once completed, foundation design was performed for 25 proposed bridge substructures. Four existing battered pilesupported foundations and two shallow foundations were evaluated for increased loading. Upon completion of the foundation design, foundation plans, specifications, and an engineer’s estimate were prepared. Foundation installation was observed on a part-time as needed basis."
