The Manhattan section of the New York Water Tunnel No. 3 constructed by the Schiavone/Shea/Frontier-Kemper Joint Venture is a $668 million project. The contract includes a tunnel drive of 8.85 km (29,045 feet), tunnel lining of 14.77 km (48,468 feet)and construction of nine shafts ranging in depth from 143 m (469 feet) to 169 m(555 feet). Construction methods for excavation of the shafts are presented including raise bore, ground freezing, soil excavation, blasting, slashing, muck handling, rock support and shaft final concrete lining.

The iron ore industry faces significant challenges in the control of dust to meet emissions regulations and goals, as well as ensuring sustainable operations. This paper describes some of the different techniques and innovative technologies that are being developed and implemented to improve the suppression of airborne dust, specifically through the use of high energy micromist sprays. The utilisation of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling and simulation is identified and described as a key enabling technology for an improvement in dust suppression solutions both from a level of understanding the source and flow of dust emissions, and for the development of new systems that can be used in the iron ore industry. CFD modelling is shown to be effective for modelling both spray dispersion and cross-wind effects, allowing designers to develop high-efficiency dust suppression systems with a greatly improved level of confidence when compared to traditional techniques. New high energy micromist technology is also outlined as a key element in developing high-efficiency dust suppression systems. Experimental results and industry applications are presented to demonstrate the significant improvements that can be achieved in suppressing or reducing airborne dust emissions.CITATION:Roberts, J M and Wypych, P W, 2017. A demonstration of dozer blades, designed for recontouring area-mined spoil and shown effective at Kansas and East Texas surface mine sites, was conducted at a Northeast Arizona surface coal mine to determine their effectiveness in different climate and soil conditions. The specialized tools were: 48-ft angle blade (on side-by-side tractor), 24-ft grading bar, modified 24-ft "U" blade (on side-by-side tractor), and a 13-ft deep "U" blade. Interest in the increased dirt-handling capacity of a previously built 22-ft blade, resulted in the design of a new Centerflow Blade of good versatility, able to maintain increased flow in otherwise difficult-to-move spoil. The demonstration involved 263 acres and showed a reduction of 50% in reclamation costs and 20% in fuel requirements for this mine site over conventional equipment. This savings resulted from improved technology, trained operators, and rigorous application of supervisory and monitoring techniques. Procedures and results of the demonstration are presented and analyzed here, along with guidelines for application of findings.

This Bureau of Mines publication reviews 237 papery on radiometric prospecting, which is the measurement of naturally occurring radioactivity in the earth's surface and its application to petroleum and natural gas exploration. Many theories and documented surveys are listed in both support and refutation of this reported phenomenon, and the Bureau of Mines is conducting research to obtain direct field information in order to determine the statistical credibility of a radiometric method of predicting petroleum accumulation.

Mintek has developed a level-control system, FloatStar, for use in flotation circuits. Instead of controlling levels separately in each unit, the controller monitors levels throughout the circuit. It can thus take account of the global effects of any control actions. A collaborative project between Mintek and Karee Platinum Mine has begun, looking at aspects of flotation control. Karee plant was chosen as the site for this work because of its good existing control infrastructure. As a first stage of the joint project FloatStar was installed. Analysis during installation and running of the FloatStar has illustrated how circuit design and measurement technology can affect process control. Severe interactions have been observed in the levels of adjacent banks. The effect of FloatStar on flotation performance was tested and an improvement in level control was observed. Similarly, a faster settling of the plant after start-ups was observed. Both the improved level control and faster start-ups lead to higher platinum recovery.

In 1950, about a third of the world?s population lived in cities. That figure has steadily risen throughout the following decades. Now it is believed that about 60 percent of the estimated 8.1 billion people in 2030 will be living in urban areas. The strain on infrastructure in cities in the developed world is already showing. And the rapid growth in developing nations today is adding to the shortage of materials, equipment and labor needed to keep up with this growth. So, while materials and labor may be in short supply, there is no shortage of work for the underground tunneling and space industry. In June, 718 of those professionals from around the world were in San Francisco, CA for the North American Tunneling (NAT) conference, put on by the Underground Construction Association (UCA) of SME. The attendees spent the three days of technical sessions listening to international authors discuss the state of the industry, new technologies that have become available and updates on major tunneling projects throughout the world. The accompanying exhibit attracted 79 vendors, who displayed the latest in tunneling and underground space equipment and services. In addition to the technical sessions and the exhibit, the NAT featured three short courses ? ?DRB Process Update Workshop,? ?Soft Ground Tunneling Technologies? and ?Underground Blasting Technology and Risk Management.? And the post-meeting field trip to the Devils Slide tunneling project near San Francisco was sold out.

ONE DAY IN the mid-1880s, in a suburb 0f Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, there dismounted from a train the two foremost leaders of the day in the coal and steel industries-Andrew Carnegie and H. C. Frick. Their attention was drawn to a well-loaded car of coke, which their experienced eyes recognized as a superior product. "I'll bet you that coke is from the H. C. Frick Coke Company," Mr. Frick challenged. "I'll bet it was shipped by my company." In a spirit of fun Mr. Carnegie accepted the wager. Mr. Frick lost the bet: the coke had come from M0rewood, one of three sites being operated under the direction of a young entrepreneur, Erskine Ramsay. If Mr. Frick's confidence was somewhat dented by this occurrence, the responsibility was his own. He himself had opened the way for Erskine Ramsay to become the youngest of mine superintendents; and he had dispersed all dissension regarding his choice with the words : "I'm not interested in his years, I'm interested in his record. He makes more coke in an oven than any other superintendent. And I'll take 'em out 0f the cradle if they can make coke... Suppose he is only twenty years old? ... The d --- kid is a genius, I tell you." Erskine Ramsay was to follow in the tradition of Carnegie and Frick. Not only was he ambitious and a worker his background had prepared him for it. Coal mining was in the Ramsay blood. His father, Robert Ramsay, of whom the son once stated that he had no superior as coal mining and mechanical engineer in this country, once accounted in these words for the phenomenal accomplishments which had attached to the name "It does no harm to belong to a family of mining engineers who are just as good as any in America-if it is myself that says it." Anyone acquainted with Robert Ramsay's character realized that he was not given to overstatement. And the above-mentioned Mr. Carnegie encountered young Ramsay again, a few years later in his career, and wrote of him to young Erskine's father, that he was "going to be a credit `tae us a' " (a quotation from Robert Burns.) Nor have Mr. Ramsay's achievements been identified exclusively with the industrial field in which he early asserted himself. He has been an inventor whose techniques in mining engineering have received international recognition. As an investor of foresight, he has benefitted others immeasurably, as well as himself, being an influential factor in the upbuilding of several communities in his chosen and well-loved adopted home state of Alabama since 1887. He is a philanthropist whose benefactions have run into millions, the chief beneficiaries being educational and charitable institutions. "Flotation circuit of the Sarcheshmeh copper mine, which processes 40,000 t/d of ore at 0.9% Cu, consists of rougher, cleaning and recleaning stages. To study the stage recovery of copper, one of the eight identical flotation banks was selected for sampling. It was observed that 17% of copper goes to the tailings and the lowest copper recovery was for particles coarser than 105 microns. The third five-cell unit of this bank not only did not recover appreciable amount of copper but also decreased the concentrate grade. The grade of the last five cells was lower than the feed grade suggesting that mixing of the concentrates of the three units was not beneficial. To alleviate the problem, the concentrate of the first four-cell unit was directed to the cleaners feed box (i.e., by- passing the regrind mill). This increased the overall copper recovery by 1.7 %. Also rather than the current practice of adding the reagents only at the feed tank (i.e., 100-0-0%), various combinations of stage addition were examined. It was found that 75-25-0% addition regime could increase the total copper recovery by 1.3%. At the recleaning stage in order to increase the final copper concentrate grade, a froth washing system was used. To ease the maintenance of the system, a shower type washing system was installed. The optimum wash water superficial flowrate was found to be 0.06 cm/s. Continuos sampling of the recleaners with and without wash water over a period of two months showed an increase of 1.5% in the final copper concentrate grade at constant overall copper recovery.INTRODUCTIONThe Sarcheshmeh copper ore body that may rank as third or fourth largest in the world contains 1 billion tonnes averaging 0.9% copper and 0.035% molybdenum. It is located in southeastern Iran and has been processing 40 000 t/d of ore since 1982. The mine produces 100 000 tonnes of copper and 2200 tonnes of molybednite concentrate per year.After three stages of crushing, the ore with a F80 (80% passing size) of 12.7 mm is fed to eight parallel ball mills in closed circuit with cyclones to produce a product 70% finer than 75 microns. The concentrate of rougher flotation circuit is ground; rougher tails constitute the main component of the plant final tailings. A concentrate with an average grade of 31% Cu (chalcocite and chalcopyrite) is obtained after cleaning and re-cleaning stages. Total recovery of the plant varies between 83% and 87%, depending on operating conditions and ore type."

Were it simply a matter of extracting tin from the simple tin sulphide, the proposition would undoubtedly be simple enough. When, however, other valuable metallic sulphides are combined with the tin, and it is required to separate these intomarketable products, then the proposition becomes somewhat complex, and such is the case with the class of material of which I am about to write. The locality where it occurs is Howell, New South Wales, and chiefly at the Conrad Silver-Lead Mine. The tin sulphide occurs chemically alloyed with copper, iron and other metals associated with galena, pyrites, mispickel, blende and silver sulphide in varying proportions, and generally in a gangue of highly crystallised quartz.Several varieties of tin sulphides occur, and from the following analyses of three minerals, these being specimens specially selected free from foreign matters, it will be seen that the chemical composition is somewhat complex.

Waste materials caused by mining activities are an important environmental problem. Paste technology is a good alternative for waste management because it has many benefits in the aspects of environment, cost and safety. Disposal of process wastes in paste form is an attractive option for waste management, as it eliminates or reduces the risks associated with conventional methods. Due to the geotechnical characteristics of the paste, it is very similar to soil materials. So determining the geotechnical properties of the paste material is essential to durability of the paste. The some important geotechnical properties are compressive strength, porosity, shear strength, hydraulic conductivity, water content, consolidation, etc. In this study, the important parameters and the relation between them were investigated and obtained some results which will affect for optimum design of waste management.

Underground coal mining can cause seismic events. There is currently no way to predict such phenomena reliably, in particular stronger events. That is why, according to the current state of the art, empirical methods are employed in this field. Some assessment criteria, which relate to the geological and mining situation and either stimulate or rather help to avoid seismic events, are presented in this paper. These criteria are examined for a practical mining situation in Germany, with a view to estimate possible seismic events.

Professional sport venue construction follows a very simple rule. Once the decision has been made to move the team to a new place, construction shall begin immediately, so that not more than one or two seasons pass by stuck in the old home. Such tight construction schedules require a different approach than traditional design-bid-build contracts. Design is mostly done on the fly, the construction schedule becomes a main risk factor and an early contractor involvement is desired. As specialty contractors become more and more sophisticated, owners, their construction managers or the general contractor have realized the value of ideas and modern technology they can bring to the table for a successful and fast project completion. Local knowledge and experience in a variety of solutions play a key role in the specialty contractor’s ability to provide added value to the project. This is also true for the specialty foundation contractor, who needs to understand the complexity of such modern structures from its integrate foundation, over the delicate concrete structure to a potentially fancy movable stadium roof. Not to mention all the modern high tech equipment which shall make such a place a great customer experience. His expertise shall enable him to propose the most suitable foundation element for the given ground condition and application. Rather to build what others have designed, his strength is to propose alternate concepts which will be faster and (hopefully) more cost effective. This paper highlights different value engineering (VE) input a specialty foundation contractor had on 3 major sports arena projects in California. Together with the entire team from owner to GC, including the Geotechnical (GEOR) and the Structural Engineer of Record (SEOR), the most efficient and best performing foundation solution can be found every time. But such an approach also requires the open mind of the owner to entertain last minute changes when the permit drawing set has already been submitted for approval.

Sandstone, a widely distributed siliceous sedimentary rock, is the third most popular building stone in the United States. It is formed by the breaking down of preexisting rocks by weathering, subsequent segregation of the detrital quartz grains into discrete deposits by the sorting action of water or wind, and finally cementation of the quartz sand into a coherent rock. The homogeneity and resistance to weathering of the resultant sandstone make it suitable for exterior construction. Its excellent wearing properties explain its popularity for flagging and stair treads. However, quarrying and dressing methods and costs are adversely affected by the abrasiveness and hardness of sandstone especially as compared to limestone.

Many different approaches have been used in the past to characterise iron ore sinter mineralogy to predict sinter quality and elucidate the impacts of iron ore characteristics and process variables on the mechanisms of sintering. Characterisation techniques include optical image analysis and point counting, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Each technique has its advantages and disadvantages depending on the objectives of the measurement. It is generally acknowledged that silicoferrite of calcium and aluminium (SFCA) is very important to the quality of the sinter produced; however, strict definitions of the phases and textures of SFCA are not generally agreed. This paper summarises the state-of-the-art in sinter characterisation applied in Australia by both academics and industrial researchers. "While conducting investigations in connection with the helium program of the Bureau of Mines, the Cryogenic Laboratory has improved an apparatus for the rapid and accurate determination of the helium content of natural gas and gaseous mixtures derived from that source. The separation of helium is effected by the use of activated coconut charcoal which, when cooled to liquid-air temperatures, absorbs the nitrogen and other constituents of the gas, leaving the helium in a. spectroscopically pure state. This absorptive property of activated charcoal was discovered- by Dewar3/ in 1875. Several years later, while conducting their original researches on helium in natural gas, Cady and McFarland employed the charcoal method for the absorption and removal of the common constituents of natural gas and constructed an efficient apparatus in which this operation could be effected.4/ Shortly after initiating the government's helium activities during the World War period, the Bureau of Mines adopted, with Minor modifications, the Cady and McFarland apparatus and method of analysis. Seibel.5./ described this modified apparatus and method of procedure as part of a publication on helium-bearing natural gas. Subsequently, the Bureau's apparatus for helium analysis has been simplified and improved to facilitate more rapid and positive operation. The apparatus and method of procedure now being used by the Bureau of Mines Cryogenic Laboratory arc described in this paper.The personnel of the Bureau of Mines Cryogenic Laboratory has improved and brought the helium apparatus described herein to its present state of perfection. The writer's contributions have been-of minor importance, and he wishes to give the various members and former members of the laboratory staff full credit for the improvements they have made. Kennedy.The quantitative determination of helium in a gaseous mixture is accomplished by the removal of the other constituents from the sample, either by chemical or physical Means, leaving only the helium which can be measured directly. Chemical methods, when applied to natural gas, require the burning of the hydrocarbons in oxygen, the, absorption of the resulting carbon dioxide in a caustic solution, the removal of the excess oxygen in a suitable solution such as an alkaline pyrogallate, and the elimination of nitrogen by sparking or by combination with hot calcium or magnesium.. Such procedures are very slow and tedious compared with the physical method which employs the absorptive property of activated charcoal to effect the separation of the other constituents from the helium."

Roof support systems have evolved from standing posts and timbers to a generation termed ?big nails? where steel bars are inserted into boreholes and anchored with expansion shells and/or resin cartridges. These systems have been effective but are limited to mining height. Additionally, the properties of steel do not resists shear forces or have the flexibility being required in difficult ground conditions. The next generation of roof support systems is coupling the best parts of the ?big nail? and resin grouted cable bolt systems. This paper will present the advanced technical solutions of the next generation of cable systems that includes an indented high-capacity PC-strand used with a variety of fixtures. Case histories of support applications will be presented.

During the operation of the Parkes process of desilverising, and in the earlier days of the continuous process, gold and silver were removed separately from softened lead bullion. Gold was removed in the Parkes process by a selective zincing, and -in the continuous process by treatment with zinc in a special de-golding kettle, in each case a crust being obtained carrying the gold and a small portion of the silver. Actually the process could have been more correctly termed a de-copperising process, on accountof the relatively large amount of this metal present, and its affinity for zinc, which caused it to enter the crusts produced.The crust was treated in reverberatory furnaces, where the bulk of the copper and zinc was removed in by-products, and the resulting "gold bullion" cupelled to give adore bullion containing approximately 2,000 ounces gold per ton.For the purpose of parting this dore, a small Balbach-Thum plant of 11 cells was used, and once each six months a short campaign was conducted on the accumulated metal.With the development of the process of de-copperising smelter bullion by means of sulphur, when a bullion averaging about .004% copper was constantly available for refining, the need for a separate de-golding process disappeared.The de-golding kettle of the Continuous Process...

A pilot steel ladle injection facility designed to assist in the production of high quality steels suitable for use in pipelines has been built and commissioned at the Basic Oxygen Steelmaking (BOS) plant at Port Kembla Works.The plant design and the injection procedure are described.The performance of the unit and some metallurgical results are discussed in terms of the addition to the steel ladle of various quantities of calcium silicide and a lime based material. The effects of these additions on sulphur content and inclusion morphology and hence on steel ductility are also presented. The influence of ladle lining on desulphurisation is illustrated.On the basis of the experience gathered in the pilot plant a permanent and more sophisticated injection facility has been designed.

Diesel powered equipment has been operated in underground coal fir mare than 50 years. According to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), there are approximately 3,000 diesel units operating in underground coal mines in the United States. This number is expected to reach 5,000 diesel units in 250 coal mines by the year 2000. Also, there are approximately 5,000 diesel units operating in metal/nonmetal mines such as trine, potash and salt mines: and more than 3,000 diesel units operating in Canada. This increased popularity of diesel powered equipment over trolley wire, electric trailing cable or battery powered equipment is because of improved safety, greater mobility, higher productivity and increased power of diesel equipment. The operation if diesel powered equipment is not without challenges. Diesel engines generate exhaust emissions, in particular carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen, sulfur dioxide, unburned hydrocarbons, and diesel particulate matter that must be maintained at safe levels. The chief method to control ambient exposure has been dilution by ventilation. A new concept to ensure continued safe ambient emissions levels from diesel equipment in underground mines is the EMISSIONS MANAGEMENT PROGRAM™. The program encompasses all factors that will influence diesel emissions. By ESTABLISHING low tailpipe emissions through technology, such as clean engines, clean fuel selection, exhaust aftertreatment devices and filtration of the exhaust gases via the Dry System ™, this program ensures that the baseline emissions are at their lowest technically feasible concentrations. The DST Dry System™ exhaust conditioner reduces DPM by over 98%, as demonstrated through laboratory research at the West Virginia University. Carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions and odor are similarly reduced. MAINTAINING these low emissions requires an expanded training program for operators and mechanics, onboard feed-back devices and a maintenance program with special focus on events and faults that can alter emissions. Finally, an on-board emissions sampling system allows the mechanic to VERIFY emissions levels and help diagnose engine faults. If the tailpipe emissions fall outside an established limit for a particular equipment, corrective actions will be initiated.
