WHEN mining and treatment first started at Broken Hill only oxidised ores were available. These ores were rich in silver and lead-the silver mainly existing as chloride and the lead as carbonate.Treatment processes aimed mainly at the recovery of silver, lead being regarded as a by-product, and its recovery, except in so far as it affected silver recovery, was of minor importance.The first ore mined was carted to Terowie and thence railed to Melbourne, being smelted by the Intercolonial Smelting and Refining Co., of Spotswood.The first parcel (50 tons) returned £7442, or £148 16s. per ton to the Broken Hill Proprietary Company.The second parcel of 1053 tons, smelted at the Day Dream smelter, returned 132,142 oz. of silver, but no record is available as to its lead content.These results obtained from two parcels showed that by smelting the ore a handsome profit could be obtained, and Mr. La Monte was engaged to erect two 30-ton Nevada water jacket blast furnaces on Block 13. About 200 M tons of coal were imported into Japan in 2007 and Indonesia was its second largest exporter, accounting for about 30 M tons (12% of the total imported coal). Indonesia produced about 200 M tons of coal, about 75% of which was exported in 2007. As the Indonesian government has decided on an energy policy wherein 33% of the country?s primary energy demand will be met by coal by the year 2025, the domestic demand for coal has increased dramatically in recent years. Over 99% of the coal produced in Indonesia comes from surface mines. However, the conditions of surface mines are worsening each year: the stripping ratio is increasing, approaching the economic ratio, and the infrastructure for coal from inland mining areas is insufficient for such intense mining operations. To meet the demand for coal in Indonesia and the rest of the world, underground mines have to be developed. However, mining engineers and/or miners in Indonesia do not have a lot of experiences, expertise and know-how concerning the plans and operations of an underground coal mine. In addition, the industry faces a lot of problems which include poor conditions such as a steep coal seam, groundwater problem, stability of highwall, etc. Under these situations, a mine targeted in this research attempts to develop a new underground mine from an open-cut highwall because the stripping ratio in the surface mining area has almost reached the limitation of economic value. This paper discusses the possible development of a new underground coal mine from an open-cut highwall by means of field observation and numerical analysis.

"Placer gold mineralizations have been observed in the north-eastern parts of Greece. Some of them have been at first evaluated to be of special interest so, exploration campaigns have been designed and carried out. Among the other exploration techniques applied on the sites of interest, drilling was the one to give the detailed information and data for the evaluation of the deposits. Having collected the data from trenching and two consecutive drilling campaigns, they were processed geostatistically to estimate the ore reserves and therefore the economic interest of the deposits. The latter was done by using exploitability indices, which would give a rough idea whether the deposits were economically feasible. A small number of such deposits have been spotted in the area and have been explored and evaluated as above. The present paper deals with the most important of them, giving all the process followed and the results derived from the exploration carried out."

There are many methods for determining the meridian, but all of those in common use involve at least two separate observations, one for latitude and one for azimuth. Such observations made upon a south star at any hour are open to the objection of possible inaccuracy due to ignorance of the absolute refraction, and also to slow change in the altitude of the star when near the meridian. The method of observing a circum-polar star at elongation. besides requiring a separate observation for latitude, is open to the serious objection that clouds may obscure the star at the critical moment. Moreover, a tedious wait for the star to come to elongation is sometimes necessary. Many of us can recall 'long, cold, weary vigils, waiting for Polaris to reach elongation. For observing a circumpolar star at any hour, not only the latitude, but also the true time, must be known. This it is practically impossible to obtain, except in regions reached by the telegraph, and usually then one has to know the longitude also, in order to reduce " standard time" to " local time." The results obtained by this method, when the star is at culmination, are not very good, unless the true local time is absolutely known. The methods of obtaining the nleridian from the sun, by means of a solar attachment, or by direct observation, while good, are not absolute, by reason of refraction, change in declination of the sun, and small change in vertical angle, when the sun is near the meridian. For these two methods, latitude, time, and approximate longitude have to be known. In the method here described, only one observation is needed, and from it are computed azimuth, latitude, aud sidereal time. In other words, one call observe a circumpolar star—Polaris

A wide variety of techniques and equipment are available for coring soft or poorly consolidated geological material. This report presents a comprehensive literature review and evaluation of these techniques and equipment. A potential user will find guidelines in this report to assist him in selecting sampling equipment. A bar chart shows what samplers have been used under what geological conditions, and gives the specific literature references. Two matrices rate the present techniques and equipment with respect to reported success for sampling specific materials, and with respect to several performance characteristics including complexity of use and core quality. These matrices are supplemented with tables of typical sampling equipment. and program costs. Near-term future developments are seen primarily in improved training of drillers, and in instrumenting the drilling operation to provide objective data on drilling characteristics. An extensive annotated bibliography, a catalogue of equipment suppliers including specifications and cost ranges, and a list of manufacturers and distributors are appended to the report.

Electronic waste (e-waste) is a collective name given to discarded electronic devices such as Television, Cellular Phones and Personal Computers. Among the heterogeneous metals present in the e-waste are the base metals: copper, aluminium, nickel, tin, zinc, iron and precious metals: gold, silver, palladium, platinum apart from several hazardous and halogens metals. Hence there is a need to recover these metals from electronic scrap by recycling and then re-use, which can meet large amount of metals demand. Hydrometallurgical processing was employed for the recovery of metals from television printed circuit board (TV PCB). Different lixiviants such as hydrochloric acid, Sulphuric acid, and nitric acid were used to understand the dissolution behavior of copper, iron and lead present in the TV PCB. Effect of increasing concentration of nitric acid was also studied. Selective recovery of tin over 95% in the form of tin oxide was precipitated. The precipitated tin oxide was identified by X-ray diffraction technique. Tin oxide of purity more than 99.9% was obtained.

The bubble size, together with the gas rate, determines the bubble surface area flux in flotation machines and, therefore, impacts directly on the kinetics of flotation. Understanding the variables that influence bubble size is one of the keys to understanding flotation recovery. Surprisingly, these relationships are poorly understood, largely due to the difficulties associated with gas dispersion measurements in industrial environments. The McGill gas dispersion sensors (bubble size, gas rate, gas holdup) are capable of reliably making such measurements. This paper reports on a study, using the McGill sensors in a 0.8 m3 Metso RCSTM pilot cell, which investigated the effect on bubble size of frother type and concentration, gas rate, temperature and rotor speed. A Denver laboratory cell was used to investigate the effect of elevation above sea level. Frother concentration proved to have the predominant influence on bubble size, and the effect of frother type can be normalised as a function of the critical coalescence concentration (CCC). Measurements made at many plant sites worldwide are compared to the model developed using the Metso RCSTM unit.

Development on the North Kalgurli mine has established a major penetration of ore into calc schist. This is controlled by a system of east-dipping strike faults. Previously, most calc schist ore bodies were regarded as being confined to the quartz dolerite greenstonecak schist contact environment.INTRODUCTIONOne of the most interesting and economically important developments which has taken place in the Kalgoorlie Field over the past 20 years is the proved penetration of ore into calc schist on the North Kalgurli Mine. This is quite extensive, both laterally and in depth, and has occasioned some modification of geological thought in the search for additional ore sources.Ore has been mined in calc schist almost since the first major gold discoveries were made and the principal features of the various types of deposit are well covered in the literature of the field. However, occurrences in calc schist have not been characterised by the same degree of continuity or frequency as the innumerable lode formations in the more favourable quartz dolerite, and there has been a tendency to regard them as isolated and discontinuous ore bearing structures, occurring only under very special conditions.It is not intended to describe the whole range of calc schist ore occurrences but only major controlling structures, whose penetration therein has been definitely established and in which an appreciable amount of ore has been and is still being found. It is considered that similar structures may present a major objective for future exploratory work in other parts of the field.

Experiments have been made in a laboratory heavy media separator at various specific gravities of separation using zinc chloride solution and magnetite suspension as media for different types of coals. The results indicate that the magnetite bath gives at better separation than zinc chloride solution. Even though the probable error remains the same for most conditions of operation, the error area is found to have a wide variation which emphasises the importance of the error area over probable error in evaluating the performance of a cleaning unit.

The activity of silver in solid gold-silver alloys (electrum) has been measured with an electrochemical concentration cell based on the super ionic conductor silver-i3-alumina in the temperature range 200 to 80oaC.The measurements of the silver activity in the range 0.5 to 90.0 atom per eent silver were found to be highly reproducible although there is some disagreement with an earlier study which used a similar technique. At temperatures above 400° the silver activity exhibits both positive and negative deviations from ideality in the silver rich region.This method suggests a simple technique for the nondestructive determination of silver in electrum alloys.

The Sovereign, Jubilee, Scotia and Jasper Creek prospects occur in an area of ~3.0 km by 2.5 km (~7.5 km2) in the Hauraki goldfield. The prospects are hosted by andesitic to dacitic flows, autoclastic breccias and localised pyroclastic and air fall deposits. Jubilee and Sovereign prospects lie along the northern and southern parts of the Waitekauri Fault, respectively, whereas Scotia is located ~1 km to the E, and Jasper Creek a further ~1.2 km to the ENE. Wall rocks are typically intensely altered, although the degree of alteration becomes more variable east of Scotia and at Jasper Creek. Alteration minerals include quartz, adularia, albite, chlorite, pyrite, illite, interstratified illite-smectite, smectite and calcite. Several of these minerals have distributions that show distinct zonation with adularia most abundant at Sovereign and Jasper Creek, but restricted to shallow levels at Scotia. Illite occurs throughout Sovereign and Jubilee plus the western margin of Scotia where it grades into interstratified illite-smectite; smectite predominates at Jasper Creek. Veins are uncommon and typically narrow, but show distinct zonations. Quartz veins are more abundant at Sovereign and Jubilee, whereas calcite veins are more abundant at Scotia and Jasper Creek. Laumontite veins occur at Scotia, and rare clinoptilolite, mordenite and stilbite veinlets with calcite occur at Jasper Creek. Fluid inclusion in quartz and calcite homogenised between 141¦ to 272¦C and trapped a dilute solution with an apparent salinity of less than 2.6 weight percent NaCl equivalent. Homogenisation temperatures are hottest at Sovereign (average 241¦C) and Jubilee (average 239¦C), cooler at Scotia (average 204¦C) and coolest at Jasper Creek (average 162¦C). Calculated paleowater table elevations suggest the water table was 680 m to 750 m above sea level at Sovereign and Jubilee, 450 m at Scotia and 225 m at Jasper Creek. The current data suggest three scenarios that can explain why Sovereign and Jubilee are deep and hot, whereas Jasper Creek is cool, shallow and marginal; 1.   some or all of the prospects may represent separate overlapping hydrothermal system, 2.   a high-relief hydrothermal system on the side of volcano with an inclined water table and outflow towards Jasper Creek, and 3.   a low-relief hydrothermal system that has been either tilted or block faulted with greatest uplift and erosion to the west.

The United States Bureau of Mines (USBM) awarded a contract to Foster-Miller, Inc. to develop guidelines for the storage and use of Self-Contained Self-Rescuers (SCSRs) in underground non-coal mines. An SCSR is a device capable of supplying, in an emergency, one hour of self-contained oxygen (no breathing of mine air). The information and recommendations in this report were developed primarily from three sources: discussions with mine representatives (including management, labor, and government), site visits in underground mines I and a detailed analysis of every reported non-coal accident which produced d hazardous atmosphere during the 5-year period 1976-1980 -plus ten other major incidents from prior years. Volume IV has three major sections: Recommendations and Discussion (Section 2), Analysis of Mine Accidents (Appendix A), and a Summary of Discussions with Mine Representatives (Appendix B).

Underground Mine Drainage may be conveniently divided into two operations:(a) Collecting and transporting drainage water to the pump eastern.(b) Elevating water to the surfacc by pumping.This short paper describes a system which automatically performs operation "a" and which has been developed on the South mine at Broken Hill, under the supervision of the mine foreman, Mr. F. McDonell. The ventilation survey was conducted in an underground longwall trona mine. The mine is relatively shallow and categorized as a gassy mine. The ventilation system consists of nine shafts (three intakes and six exhausts). Three surface based axial fans ventilate the mine configured in a blowing arrangement. Following the ventilation survey airflow quantity, frictional pressure losses and air psychrometric characteristics have been quantified. An accurate resistance survey has been conducted to calculate the pressure drop with regard to moving cages and skips in the shafts. This paper discusses the benefits of utilizing high accuracy digital pressure transducers and psychrometers in a ?leapfrogging? survey to gather data needed to build the computer ventilation model. Two underground booster fans with VFD are currently idle but available at the mine. The ventilation model has been used to determine the optimal booster fan locations to decrease the overall operating cost by reducing the load carried by the main fans. A leakage study has been conducted to evaluate the effects on the system of additional pressure from a booster fan. The study finally prepares a future ventilation model for the next fifteen years of mine operation and investigates the effect of proposed scenarios.

This paper gives an overview of the difficulties associated with determining the strength of hard rock pillars. Although a number of pillar design tools are available, pillar collapses still occur. Recent examples of large scale pillar collapses in South Africa were caused by weak partings which traversed the pillars. Currently two different methods to determine the strength of pillars are used namely, empirical equations derived from the back analyses of failed and stable cases and numerical modelling tools with an appropriate failure criteria. Both techniques have their limitations and additional work is required to obtain a better understanding of pillar strength. Empirical methods are popular and easy to use, but care should be exercise that the results are not extrapolated beyond the range of the data which were used to derive them. An example is the Hedley and Grant formula (derived for the Canadian uranium mines) that has been used for many years in the South African platinum and chrome mines (albeit with some adaptation of the K-value) to design the pillar layouts. Very few collapses have nevertheless been reported and it might even be too conservative an assumption of pillar strength in these mines. As an alternative, some engineers strongly advocate the use of numerical techniques to determine pillar strength. A close examination unfortunately reveals that these techniques also rely on many flawed assumptions. An area where numerical modelling is invaluable, however, is to study specific pillar failure mechanisms, such as the influence of weak partings on pillar strength. In conclusion, it appears that neither empirical techniques nor numerical modelling currently provide a solid basis to conduct pillar design. It is therefore recommended that both these techniques be utilised when confronted with a pillar design to obtain the best possible insight into the problem.

The Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mining Co.(CC&V) celebrated completion of a two-year, $168.5-million expansion and capital improvement program. An open house celebration was held in the historic mining town of Victor, CO on Oct. 4, 2002. Hundreds of townspeople, the press and other invited guests from the mining industry joined the employees of CC&V in the celebration. The event included mine tours, company displays and a barbecue picnic, complete with a country and western band. The Cresson Mine is located about 40 km (25miles) west of Colorado Springs, CO between the towns of Cripple Creek and Victor. The mine is the only large-scale gold mining operation in Colorado and now employs about 300 (ME, October 2001, pp.21-28). The operation is a joint venture between Anglo-Gold (Colorado) (67%), based in Greenwood Village, CO, and Golden Cycle Gold (33%), based in Colorado Springs. CC&V is managed by AngloGold North America. AngloGold North America is the U.S. subsidiary of AngloGold, the world’s second largest gold mining producer. AngloGold is based in Johannesburg, South Africa.
