Some literatures discussed on how to recycle the various reagent, but the discussion on how to reuse the waste liquid directly is very little. How to reuse the waste liquid directly was researched in this paper. Firstly, the waste liquid should be filtrated to remove the impurity; then some quantity of H2O2 solution was dripped into the waste liquid to pretreat it; finally, CuSO4solution was added into the treated waste liquid and the pH was adjusted to about 12, then some HCHO solution was added into the waste liquid, in which the treated carbon fiber can be plated. The morphology and composition of coatings were investigated by means of Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS), the deposition rate was mensurated by the way of dissolution. The results indicated that, the plating effect was basically identical with new plating solution, and the solution is stable, and the plating rate is still about 0.8µm/h, and the copper coating is even and combines closely with carbon fiber. According to this way, the waste liquid can be reuse 5~7 times.

The town of Greenwich, CT, an exclusive suburb of New York City awarded several contracts for the installation of sanitary sewer in the North Mianus section of town. The Valley Road section was the most challenging from a rock excavation standpoint. The cut was up to 14 ft (4.25m), with adjacent utilities [20 in. (500mm) water, 6 in. (150mm) water and 8 in. (200mm) gas] located to within 5 ft. (1.5m) of the proposed sewer trench. Rock types varied but were ultra metamorphic in nature, ranging from quartzites, granite gneiss and various types of migmatities.

Introduction Shale Mining Problems The mining problems an oil shale operator will face are largely determined by the process. Candidate oil recovery processes are surface (above ground processing of mined oil shale), modified in situ (underground with some shale removed), and true in situ (completely underground with no shale removed). The shale removed for modified in situ (MIS) is generally processed by surface techniques. The mining problems are different for each category. Fig. 1 depicts the diversity of western shale deposits. Mining for surface operations will employ underground mining techniques in common use but the scale will be larger. A typical oil shale operation is expected to require 75,000 to 250,000 st (68 000 to 226 800 tons) a stream day of crushed oil shale. This is above the upper limit of current mining operations. Major problems in¬clude: (1) lack of good engineering design properties for oil shale, especially when interbedded with saline minerals at depths below 1,000 ft (305 m); (2) presence of water, hydrogen sulfide, and methane in some areas; (3) necessity for mine disposal of as much retorted oil shale waste as possible; and (4) control of en¬vironmental impacts of mining. Portions of the oil shale deposits in Colorado, Wyoming, and Utah and significant portions of the Devonian shales in the eastern U.S. are adapted to surface mining. No major technological problems are apparent outside overburden thicknesses up to 1,000 ft in the West. However, numerous political and environmental dif¬ficulties have arisen. One major oil shale developer cancelled a planned surface mining operation and currently is pursuing a modified in-situ plan. The eastern shales are closer to the surface than the western, but suffer from many of the same environmental and political problems. Modified in-situ operations face much more severe mining problems than surface efforts. Because the mined stope (called an in-situ "retort" by processors) acts as a retorting process vessel subject to gas flow, combustion, and temperatures between 1,500° and 2,000°F, mining is under highly restrictive limitations. This processing method involves removing between 20 and 40% of the shale deposit and then blasting the roof and walls into the mined space, where the oil is recovered by retorting. Major problems are: (1) swell factor severely limited; (2) need for consistent size distribution of blasted shale; (3) even filling of stope (in-situ retort) by blasted shale with consistent permeability throughout; (4) scaleup of blasting techniques, after optimization; (5) protection of retort pillars and roof during and after retorting; (6) prevention of groundwater percolation; (7)use of ANFO explosive in wet holes; (8) disposing of surface-retorted shale waste in stope; and (9) restoration of site. "The raw ores which are processed in mineral processing plants exhibit very strong variations of their physical and chemical properties. As a consequence, the performances of the comminution and separation processes vary greatly from time to time. Model-based control strategies improve the performance of the plant; however, they require some form of adaptation to cope with the variations of the are properties.This paper deals with the use of adaptive techniques for the control of mineral processes. It begins with a survey on adaptive control algorithms including parameters estimation aspects. Then several examples dealing with crushing, rod, ball, autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding, flotation , drying and calcination processes are reviewed.IntroductionThe operation of the various processes of mineral processing plants (crushing, grinding, flotation, dewatering, etc.) is generally controlled using empirically tuned regulators of constant structure, such as PID controllers. To improve the operation performance, mineral processors try to implement specifically designed controllers, i.e. controllers based on plant dynamic models. Most of the time, these techniques improve the control of the mineral processing installations. However, modelling is a complex procedure because of the problems of measurement and data management, specific to this industry, and because of the variations of the model parameters. In this context model-based control strategies do not always bring the expected improvements or are sometimes discarded and replaced by more conventional techniques .The sources of variation of the dynamic behaviour of mineral processing systems can be classified into three categories: (I) the inherent changes of the raw ore properties (composition, grindability, mineralogical texture, etc.); (2) the process tuning modifications (grinding media loads, number of hydrocyclones, slurry level in flotation cells, agitation speeds, etc.); (3) the feedrate variation of the ore, water, chemical reagents, etc. All these factors change the fundamental properties of the process dynamics such as the grinding or flotation rates and the residence time in the equipment. The simplified linear models which are used to describe the process dynamics are not able to track the complex behaviour of the mineral processing systems when the amplitude of the sources of variation are too large. The mismatch between the model and the plant behaviour is then frequently a cause of model-based controller failures."

Analysis for pillar extraction potential (A-PEP) is an intelligent tool, which could be used as a preliminary output indicator when considering the secondary extraction of regional support pillars in the Witbank and Highveld coalfields of South Africa. The safe and economic extraction of underground coal pillars is of paramount significance and importance to the South African coalmining industry to ensure continuity of supply of this fossil fuel. Pillar extraction practices in South Africa have been responsible a significant proportion of safety and fatality statistics in relation to its relative output (less than 5 per cent of total South African coal production) and, as a result, research was undertaken in local pillar extraction operations and extended to similar operations in New South Wales, Australia to assess a way forward for pillar extraction in South Africa. It was found that, although little in the way of new technologies has emerged in this field in the recent past, significant contributions could be made in the field of risk analysis to obtain a generic design methodology for pillar extraction in South Africa. The resultant A-PEP tool to assess pillar extraction potential is based on certain physical, risk and economic factors, which combine to indicate operational success in terms of economic, health and safety attributes. At the time of A-PEP?s development there was alack of operating underground coal pillar extraction operations, which made it difficult to validate its applicability. Since then, however, A-PEP has been successfully tested and validated against two unique underground coal pillar operations, which is the discussion of this paper. One operation is situated in the Witbank coalfield and is extracting pillars, which are 20 years old and at a depth of 80 metres below surface, while the other operation is situated in the Highveld coalfield-which is extracting 6 month-old-pillars underneath a massive dolerite sill at a depth of 220 metres. A-PEP has shown that its predictive nature is consistent the workings at both operations, irrespective of their unique conditions, and as such it can be successfully used as a mine planning tool. The A-PEP mine planning tool thus represents a positive step toward an integrated approach to underground coal pillar extraction when considering legal and operational aspects, which could form the basis for legislative guidelines when considering the future of pillar extraction in South Africa.

In recent times, there has been criticism of the minerals industry over the lack of quantifiable boundaries between inferred, indicated, and Measured resources. A recent initiative through the United Nations aims to try to converge the mineral resource classification systems. Since the oil and gas industry uses a probabilistic approach to defining reserve boundaries, it is appropriate to introduce a similar statistical methodology for minerals. The Venmyn Variance Tower has been developed based upon traditional statistics to utilize historical and ongoing information in order to quantify variance of geological and chemical parameters and the boundaries and logic for quantitative mineral resource classification. It is proposed that a less than 50% variance from the mean of all sample parameters is required to achieve the classification threshold to define an inferred Resource whereas between 20-10% is needed for an indicated Resource and less than 10% variance from the mean is needed to declare a Measured Resource. These limits are similar to those used by the oil and gas industry, and it is suggested that these thresholds be adopted as an industry standard to ensure consistent quantitative reporting. While this process is intended to use statistics of an orebody to provide quantifiable and defendable boundaries, it cannot be carried out unless the geology of the mineral deposit is understood and the borehole samples can be categorized into appropriate populations for which the statistics are valid. This means that competent geologists are always required to work with and understand the implications of the Variance Tower results. This paper is intended to form the basis of a series of publications that establish a process to take mineral projects along a quantifiable and logical development path. Hence, no specific field example of the practical application of this process is given here.

Initial investment for mechanical boring of tunnels is found to be high in most cases. Conventional drilling and blasting is not the possible especially in urban area. In these conditions impact hammer offers many advantages over conventional drill and blast techniques and boring tunnels. These include improved safety, minimal ground disturbances, elimination of blast vibration, reduced ventilation requirements, reduced cost etc. Therefore, hydraulic impact hammers have been used widely in metro tunnelling projects in Istanbul since 1992. Accumulated and published data from various tunnelling projects serve to improve predicting the machine performance and scheduling of job duration. This paper is prepared under this objective. Machine utilization time of impact hammer was evaluated in this study. The main rock formation named Kartal formation arepaleozoic aged sedimentary rocks, shale, sandstone, siltstone, andesite dykes and sediment fillings. The first stage of the project is commissioned to Yapi Merkezi- Yuksel- Dogus- Yenigun- Belen consortium.

In March 2012 a combined BHP Billiton and Hatch team embarked on a program to improve the concentrate burner efficiency of BHP Billiton’s Olympic Dam copper flash smelting furnace. A multi-faceted approach including an analysis of the furnace using operational knowledge and first principles engineering led to the design and supply of a new central-lance (disperser). A new, patented, swirl method of introducing the copper concentrate into the furnace was developed to integrate with the existing concentrate burner. Plant trials in 2014 demonstrated an increase of nearly 10 percent in the oxygen efficiency of the furnace. A combination of the needs of business, employee desires and safety and health considerations is stimulating increasing attention to the time spent by people at work and the timing of that work. Particularly we are seeing: - innovative work schedules for 24-hour mining businesses; and - response from industry to accommodate the needs, even the desires, of employees in return for systems which are more productive and more capital efficient. There appears to be an evolutionary trend for business management to become more sophisticated and responsive to the need for achieving close to best cost work schedules to sustain continuous improvement. The underlying motivating forces driving this trend for improved techniques in organising attendance at, and time spent at work, is the seemingly inseparable combination of technological advance and ever-increasing accumulation of capital. The mining industry has not remained untouched by this thrust for ever-increasing need for best use of labour, to adopt advances in technology and to provide attractive opportunities for putting accumulated capital to work. An essential component of this on-going thrust is a substantial effort by the mining industry to improve the performance of labour by providing most-productive work schedules.

Disseminated gold mineralization in the Vunda River area 12 km SE of Lautoka in Viti Levu occurs sporadically in shoshonite volcanics within an alteration area of some 6 km2. No definite intrusions have yet been located though possible intrusions occur toward the centre and on the eastern margin of the area. The nature and distribution of alteration suggests the presence of a co-magmatic mineralizing stock just below the surface.The gold occurs within close spaced fractures and occasionally around the c1asts of breccia and agglomerate.Various types of alteration compatible with porphyry mineralization occur, but to date show no zoning or defined correlation with incidence of gold which occurs in various alteration facies.It is suggested that the gold and trace copper mineralization at Vunda arises from the sub-volcanic intrusive phase (monzonite) of the Sambeto shoshonite (5 m.y.) and is part of an E-W zone of porphyry-type mineralizationtrending easterly to the Kingston porphyry copper deposit at Navilawa.There is a close similarity between the Vunda mineralization and some of the porphyry deposits of alkali affinity in British Columbia, Canada.

Attractive mining workplaces are good, safe and healthy environments. They are also workplaces that the workforce of the future wants to work in. As skilled miners and engineers are already scarce, this is important both for today and for the future. However, the future of mining will also be subject to increased international competition. In attempting to become more competitive, many mining companies turn to rationalisation, looking to both rationalise their production and organisation as well as optimise their processes. Work organisation is important in both rationalisation and providing attractive mining work. As a result, this paper investigates a ‘lean production’ (LP) philosophy for the organisation of future mines. The aim of the paper is to investigate to what extent LP can be used to organise for attractive mining. It first defines what attractive mining work is and to what degree it can be influenced by work organisation. A short insight into the LP concept will be given as well as a review of how it is discussed and utilised in mining today. This paper shall present the design and construction of bored pile and diaphragm wall for the proposed MHA complex in Singapore. The work was carried out by L&M Foundation Specialist Pte Ltd and PWD Consultants Pte Ltd was the consultant for this project. A brief description of the project is first presented to illustrate the scope and scale of the work involved, which includes the construction of bored piles and diaphragm walls and installation of steel stanchions in the bored piles. This is followed by a description of the methodology used to analyse and design the wall and bored piles. As both towers in this project are supported on bored piled foundation and are constructed by top down construction method, the analysis of the wall has taken into consideration the sequence of work phase by phase and this was carried out by means of a commercial finite element program called CRISP. Modelling of the problem will be briefly described and the findings from the numerical analysis will be presented. This is followed by a description of the structural and geotechnical design aspects of bored piles. The paper shall then describe the difficulties encountered for this project and solution used to solve the problem. The subsoil condition will be described with special mention on the encounter of very strong granitic rock at depth above the maximum excavation level of the basement at certain locations, hence necessitating the drilling of rock for a considerable depth for both bored piles and diaphragm wall. At this juncture, the construction method used to drill through the rock will be briefly described. For construction of bored piles, penetration of rock was carried out by chiselling or drilling using reverse circulation rigs. For construction of diaphragm wall, it requires the employment of Bauer hard rock cutter which uses cutting wheels fitted with roller bits and are capable of excavating into granitic rock of compressive strengths more than 100 MPa.

The U.S. Geological Survey has completed a dig-ital coal resource assessment of six of the top-producing coal beds and coal zones in the northern and central Appalachian Basin coal regions. These include the Pennsylvanian-aged Pittsburgh, Upper Freeport, Lower Kittanning, Fire Clay, Pond Creek, and Pocahontas No. 3 coal beds and coal zones. Resources were calculated on all of the coalbeds/zones, with the exception of the Lower Kittanning coal bed. Preliminary original resources are estimated at about 93 billion short tons (84 billion tonnes), of which about 66 billion short tons (60billion tonnes) remain. Much of the remaining coal in all five coal beds/zones is thinner [<3.5 ft (1.07m)] and deeper [>1,000 ft (305 m)] than the coal that has been mined, but economic resources are still available and mining in each coal bed/zones will continue throughout this decade and into the next given current market conditions.

The industries and companies represented at this Conference are in an arena of high competition, risk taking and enormous capital outlay. They are industries which our overseas markets (rightly or wrongly) have criticised for industrial relations problems, unreliable production and uncertain deliveries. They are industries which have an urgent need to be cost effective and competitive at all levels of activity.A critical factor in the mining and metallurgy industries is, therefore, its human resources and its human resource management. It requires the full use of available talent, innovation, skills and qualifications within its workforce, and the appropriate management of these resources.

New Zealand China Clays produces a unique halloysite clay product at Matauri Bay, Northland. &nbsp; The company has licences over four deposits that were derived from the weathering of rhyodacite domes. Clay is mined and processed from two of the four deposits and is refined using a complex process based on gravity separation. &nbsp; The product is almost entirely exported to niche markets in 24 countries. The main market is the fine ceramic industry where the product is used as a component in the manufacture of high quality porcelain and bone china bodies. The use of halloysite in these bodies gives the manufacturer the ability to achieve high whiteness and translucency. The other major market is for use in technical ceramics, where the product is sought after due to its high purity, fine particle size and stability at high temperatures.

Since mining-induced seismicity first became apparent at the Beaconsfield Gold Mine in 2002, there has been an ongoing program of geotechnical investigations to understand the phenomenon and allow for the development of strategies to manage the risks it posed to personnel, the business and the community at large. Studies resulting from a seismically induced rockfall on Anzac Day 2006 have been extensive, and have advanced the understanding and management of seismicity at the mine. Enhancement of the mineÆs seismic array, implementation of extensive monitoring of ground behaviour, improved ground support and reinforcement design, and ongoing numerical modelling provide a technical framework for the management of seismicity. In addition, extensive involvement of the workforce in risk assessment and the development of standard work procedures (SWPs), has contributed to a æbest practiceÆ approach to manage seismic hazards at the mine.

The aim of this paper is to demonstrate that active seismic measurements could have an impact in helping solve rock engineering problems experienced in the South African mining industry. The paper presents a variety of experimental and numerical results where seismic waves show clear differences in wave-speed and amplitudes due to different degrees of fracturing. It presents results from the ?Omnibus? project commissioned to develop new ultrasonic technologies for diagnosing fracturing for nuclear waste repositories. This included using models to investigate assemblies of cracks where the effects of crack density and crack size on waveforms are shown to be coupled. Results indicate that these effects can be decoupled in the frequency domain, where the Fourier amplitude aids in estimating crack size, while the low frequency phase-difference has a direct relationship to crack density. Models are also shown to aid interpretation of waveforms by isolating geometric effects from the effects due to cracks. Two rock engineering problems experienced in the South African mining industry are investigated through numerical examples. These demonstrate that determining whether ?crush? pillars have failed and determining the degree of fracturing in the hangingwall of stopes, may be possible through the use of active seismic surveys.

Piles were installed through Stiff Clayey Fill and Medium-Dense Sands to Decomposed Shale. Piles were drilled to a refusal criteria of 1 ft. / 3 min. Piles were installed using a Barcus Mantis AugerPile rig which is large enough to install piles 25 to 50 ft. long outdoors. The Mantis is also ideal for indoor and low overhead installations. On top of being extremely versatile, the Mantis is also very economical to mobilize. The existing structure is supported on H-Piles. The AugerPiles were furnished and installed for less than the material price of the H-Piles. Design loads were under 40 tons which eliminated the need for a load test. AugerPiles were selected for minimal vibration, limited noise, and economy.
