This report is the third in a series presenting equilibrium vapor-liquid data for helium-bearing natural gases. The first two reports contained phase data for the gases processed for helium at the Bureau of Mines Amarillo and Exell, Tex., helium plants. The present report offers similar information for a lower-helium-content (0.75 mole-percent) natural gas to be processed in the Department of the Interior's long-range helium-conservation program. A windowed-cell apparatus was used to obtain 218 samples of equilibrium vapor and liquid phases at 73 experimental conditions ranging in temperature from -100° F to -275° F and in pressure from 100 to 500 psi. From the phase data, the condensation characteristics, helium solubility, and equilibrium-vaporization-coefficient data for helium, nitrogen, and methane were evaluated. The effect of using a. preliminary hydrocarbon trap upon the subsequent vapor-liquid compositions is reported. A brief comment regarding the composition effect of passing the gas through a gasoline-removal unit is also included.

In decision making support system, that are used in various fields of environmental protection (environmental impact assessment, environmental management systems, setting environmental standards and regulation, etc.), it is often important to apply various mathematical environmental engineering models. The question of linking environmetal engineering modeling to decision making support system used in environmental protection is not yet methodically solved. The reasons for that could be manifold. Decison making support systems, used in environmental protection, because they are simply taken from bussines decision making, are not often adequate for specific problems raised in environmental protection. On the other hand, there are great number of types of models in environmental engineering, what urges the problem of finding the way of their proper linking with decision making support systems. The application of fuzzy logic in that field is estimated as one of possible solution of the problem.

This paper documents the relationship between material handling and processing coete compared to blasting cost. The old adage, "The cheapest crushing is done in the pit", appears accurate in this c!ase study. Comparison of the accumulated cost of: powder, selected wear materials and electricity; indicate a strong. inverse correlation with powder factor (lbe powder/long ton of rock). In this case, the increased powder cost is more than offset by electrical savings alone.

Zincite and spinel phases are present in the complex slag systems encountered in zinc/lead sintering and zinc smelting processes. These phases form extensive solid solutions and are stable over a wide range of compositions, temperatures and oxygen partial pressures. Accurate information on the stability of these phases is required in order to develop thermodynamic models of these slag systems. Phase equilibria in the Fe-Zn-O system have been experimentally studied for a range of conditions, between 900 and 1580°C and oxygen partial pressures (pO2) between air and metallic iron saturation, using equilibration and quenching techniques. The compositions of the phases were measured using Electron Probe X-ray Microanalysis (EPMA). The ferrous and ferric bulk iron concentrations were determined using a specially developed wet-chemical analysis procedure based on the use of ammonium metavanadate. XRD was used to confirm phase identification. A procedure was developed to overcome the problems associated with evaporation of zinc at lowpO2s and to ensure the achievement of equilibria. An isothermal section of the system FeO-Fe2O3-ZnO at high ZnO concentrations at 1200°C was constructed. The maximum solubilities of iron and zinc in zincite and spinel phases in equilibrium were determined at pO2=1*10-6atm at 1200and 1300°C. The morphology of the zincite crystals sharply changes in air between 1200 and 1300°C from rounded to plate-like. This is shown to be associated with significant increase in total iron concentration, the additional iron being principally in the form of ferric iron. Calculations performed by Fact Sage with a thermodynamically optimized database have been compared with the experimental results. This investigation compares the results from an experimental and numerical study of air flow in a scaled-down underground coal mine model. This was done in order to determine if numerical analysis can be relied upon when searching for ventilation solutions to control high concentration of coal dust and methane gas in underground coal mines. Steady state analyses were used to identify flow patterns and recirculation regions within the mining section while transient state analyses were used to determine the time taken to extract the initial air from the model. The agreement between the experimental and numerical results indicates that numerical modelling is useful in this regard. The study went further to devise a method of determining the optimum position of the jet fan that is responsible for mine-gas dilution at different stages of mining.

Technical procedures and designs are illustrated.IntroductionThe development of high-performance heat-shrinkable materials slightly over 20 years ago proved to be one of the major technological breakthroughs in power cable accessories. Heat-shrinkable products were introduced initially for use as low-volt age cable accessories in the aircraft and electronics industry. A program of continuous development and product introduction now enables the manufacturer to offer a broad range of products for mining, industrial and utility electrical systems.With the advent of atomic energy, an important discovery was made-exposure of some plastic materials to high-energy electrons can cause the permanent crosslinking, or intermolecular joining, of adjacent molecules. Once the material has been crosslinked, it will not melt or flow at any temperature.The unique properties of heat-shrinkable products also result from the exposure of special thermoplastic formulations to high-energy electrons. Because of crosslinking, these products have perfect elastic memory. The heat-shrinkable products are supplied in expanded condition. When heated, they will shrink and tightly cover the object over which they have been placed. 'The functional and operating demands of mine cable accessories exceeded the classic electronic applications of heat shrinkable materials. These demands required a very sophisticated program to develop materials and adhesive systems that could endure the operational environment associated with the mining industry,Ease of assembly, low installed cost and operational reliability are among the main reasons for the acceptance of heat-shrinkable mine cable accessories in electrically powered mines. "This paper describes the modifications made to the Fox Mine copper concentrate bin in order to obtain a continuous flow condition. The design of these modifications is based on test results obtained on Fox Mine concentrate using the flow factor testing machine in the research facilities of Cominco at Trail, B.C.The original design consisted of a cylindrical steel bin on a concrete slab with two slot-discharge openings. Based on predictions of the maximum mass flow hopper angle for conical and wedge shaped hoppers for the concentrate on various potential bin lining materials, Ultra-High Molecular Weight (UHMW) Polymer was selected as a liner.Using the recommended angles for conical and wedge shaped hoppers, the profile of the bin base was changed to suit the existing slot openings.The initial method of fastening the liner resulted in failure of the connections. Subsequent modification to the zinc concentrate bin fastener system proved satisfactory and it has now been in operation for over one year without any separation of the lining material.Utilization of flow testing procedures on concentrate samples has demonstrated that proper design of storage bins or hoppers to achieve continuous flow can be incorporated into the design of new plants."

Prior tests by Dorn, where the strain rate in a tensile test was suddenly changed, have shown a small, but definite rate-history effect to exist. If this effect is neglected in the calculation of creep behavior from tensile results, an error should occur. This paper shows that this error is smaller than experimental scattering, and may be neglected. DORN1 has found a small but definite rate-history effect in the aluminum alloy 250 at liquid-nitrogen temperature using tensile tests with an abrupt rate change. This paper introduces the development and application of a new cable anchor - Cable-Lok for pre-stressed cable bolting in mines. Cable-Lok is a spring-loaded cable anchor suitable for the drill hole diameter of 50 and 65 mm (2" and 2.5") in medium soft rock to hard rocks. The cable anchor is automatically set on installation and the cable can be tensioned immediately to provide active and primary support throughout its length. Post-grouting can be conducted independently. In comparison with the conventional cable bolting, Cable-Lok anchor will greatly speed-up the cable bolting circle and decreases the cost of cable bolting. Cable bolting anchored with Cable-Lok anchor has wide application in mines, e.g. pre-stressed cable bolting in large span drifts and intersections for permanent rock support, or in hanging walls or stopes for temporary support, or cable lace anchoring etc. This paper introduces the principle of pre-stressed cable bolting and the specifications of the Cable-Lok anchor, presented the testing results in laboratory and the application cases in mines.

Wellbore stability is a major concern for drilling in naturally fractured formations. The infiltration of drilling mud into the fractures is a factor, which may compromise wellbore integrity due to the loss of strength experienced by the fractures. The reduction in the fracture frictional and cohesive properties is attributed to weakening of the infill materials and lubrication of fracture asperities by the mud filtrate. One way to investigate the influence of mud infiltration on wellbore stability in fractured formations is to use a numerical modeling approach. A requirement for the numerical model is the ability to predict the region of mud infiltration. This paper describes a numerical technique to model the extent of mud infiltration for application in coupled fluid-mechanical simulations in densely fractured rock masses using the computer code, UDEC. Several factors are considered including fracture pattern, in-situ stresses, reduction in joint frictional angle and cohesion, viscosity of the mud filtrate and fracture plugging. Results of numerical simulations are presented to illustrate the technique and show the influence of these factors on the extent of mud infiltration. Un des problèmes importants posés par le forage en milieu fissuré saturé, est celui du maintient de la stabilité du puit. L’infiltration de boue de forage dans le massif peut avoir pour effet de réduire les propriétés frictionnelles et cohésives des fractures et de compromettre ainsi la stabilité du puit de forage. Le radoucissement des propriétés des fractures est attribué à la dégradation du materiau de remplissage et au pouvoir lubrifiant des boues. L’analyse numérique offre un moyen d’investiguer l’influence jouée par l’infiltration de boue sur la stabilité du puit. Un des critères de sélection du modèle numérique sera son pouvoir de prédiction du domaine d’infiltration de boue. Cet article décrit une technique numérique permettant de modéliser l’infiltration de boue de forage dans le cadre de simulations hydro-mécaniques, en milieu à haute densité de fractures, effectuées avec le logiciel de calcul UDEC. Parmis les facteurs tenus en compte, on trouvera la nature du réseau de fractures, les contraintes in-situ, le radoucissement en friction et cohésion des joints, la viscosité de la boue et le bourrage des fractures. Des résultats de simulations sont présentés pour illustrer la technique et montrer l’influence de ces facteurs sur la taille du domaine d’infiltration de boue. Das Eindringen der Bohrlochstützflüssigkeit in die Klüfte kann die Bohrlochintegrität wegen des Verlustes der Festigkeit des Kluftsystems gefährden. Die Reduktion der Reibung und kohäsiven Eigenschaften ist der Schwächung der Kluftfüllung und der Schmierwirkung der eingerungenen Stützflüssigkeit in Bezug auf die Kluft-Asperities geschuldet. Numerische Berechnungen sind ein Weg zur Untersuchung des Einflusses der Infiltration der Bohrlochstützflüssigkeit auf die Bohrlochstabilität in geklüfteten Gebirgsformationen. Anhydrous zirconium tetrafluoride can be used as a precursor for the manufacturing of nuclear-grade zirconium metal. This can be done by fluorinating plasma-dissociated zircon with ammonium bifluoride in a batch reactor. This paper describes the batch process. It was proved that anhydrous zirconium tetrafluoride can be manufactured by this route as confirmed by X-ray diffraction. The process shows potential for scaling up to the kilogram scale and possibly the tonnage scale.

THE use of small substations for the supplying of 275-volt energy to the locomotive and cutting machines in coal mines is a well-established practice. A few years ago, when labor costs were lower, these substations were located as near to the load as possible, and an operator was provided for each station. This practice has now become so expensive that substations are being located with reference to other mining machinery, such as hoists or pumps, so that one operator can look after both. Some-times the substation is operated by one whose duties make him traverse quite a large area. In such cases the interruption of alternating-current supply may produce a long interruption in the direct current, as the station cannot resume service until this man reaches it. Such interruptions interfere seriously with production and may easily counterbalance the supposed saving gained by such operating methods. The grouping of substations for convenience in operating may also result in excessive copper loss and consequently poor trolley voltage, with its attendant evils of low locomotive speeds and increased locomotive motor maintenance. The speed of the coal-cutting machines will also be reduced. By relieving the substation of its, burden of the operating labor cost, the most economical location, from an electrical standpoint, may be chosen. The matter of machine insurance should also be considered. If an attendant is caring for several kinds of equipment, he cannot watch the machine continually for signs of trouble; therefore, continued overload, phase failure, low alternating-current voltage, bearing trouble, etc. may result. Some partly automatic equipments have been installed; these have protection against low voltage, reverse current, and bearing trouble and are provided with automatic reclosing circuit breakers. This is a step in the right direction but it does not go far enough to give first-class machine insurance.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of BSc (Eng.) Metallurgy and Materials Engineering Small and large welded aluminium specimens were tested in fatigue and the results compared with design curves for aluminium in specification BS8118. Metallurgical tests were also performed on the specimens in order to correlate microscopic and macroscopic phenomena. The small-scale fatigue test results were in reasonable agreement with results in BS8118, whereas the large-scale fatigue tests showed that BS8118 is conservative.

A thermal plasma process was used to synthesize nanosized tungsten carbide -cobalt composite powder, in which ammonium paratungstate and cobalt oxide were reacted with a gas mixture containing CH4, H2 and Ar. The reduction and carburization of vaporized precursors produced nanosized tungsten carbide (WC1-x) - cobalt composite powder, which sometimes contained small amounts of W2C and/or W phase. The effects of gas composition, plasma torch power, and the flow rate of plasma gas on the product composition and grain size were investigated. The grain size of synthesized tungsten carbide powder was less than 20 nm. The synthesized composite powders were also subjected to a hydrogen heat treatment to fully carburize WC1-x, W2C, and W phases to the WC phase as well as to remove excess carbon in the product. Finally nanosized WC-Co composite powder of grain size less than 50 nm was obtained.

Project-finance risk assessment is mature and approached systematically. Mining industry due diligence remains fragmented with specialists addressing different aspects of the project such as reserves/JORC, environmental impact, commodity market, even financial analysis/ modelling. Each professional has a natural tendency to believe that the risk factors they have examined are the key ones necessary to be reviewed, as if their review will stand in isolation from others in the way a project materialises. By first laying out the project risk categories and risk matrices, this paper examines the due diligence process with a keen eye to the risk assessment and overlap/interaction. Some cross fertilisation of due diligence techniques from other industry sectors is placed into the mining context. Six case studies are then presented with regards to due diligence features in each projectÆs feasibility review or financial information/ offering memorandum. A power case first shows the differences between the due diligence expectations of banks versus bond financings. Then some Australian and Indonesian mining development cases are analysed to see the due diligence learning points. Some of these were project/due diligence failures. The conclusion focuses on the value of a systematic risk assessment for project evaluation, all from the project-finance perspective.

The objective of this study is "to assess the impact of surface mining on soil compaction in the Midwest". The study revolves around a unique field sampling program targeted at four mine sites utilizing four distinct types of soil movement of midwestern prime land. Through the preparation of a final report for use as a guidebook, an assessment is made of the degree to which surface mining operations contribute to the soil compaction problem. The final report is formulated through the use of field study data as well as information gathered in an intense literature review. The final report centers on applying collected data to practical field applications. Soil sampling on the four mine sites centers on a comparison of natural and replaced soils for moist bulk density. This characterization evaluates changes in density and texture throughout the soil profile to a depth of 48 inches. Fertility of the topsoil is also assessed for natural and replaced soils. During field sampling and observations, a base of information has been gathered to compile a case study on each mine site. The report accesses the regulations in the prime farmland areas through the use of a matrix. The regulatory matrix allows easy access of mining personnel to State and Federal regulations.

Twin bore running tunnels driven approximately 4,500 route feet by a Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) EPB Tunnel Boring Machine link the West Portal and East Portal on this complex Light Rail Project. One third along the way, the TBM arrives at the Beacon Hill Station which is the deepest underground “binocular” station of its kind in North America and then “walks-across” the station to be re-launched on the other side to complete the drive. This paper discusses briefly the layout and design considerations but then focuses more deeply on the approach by the Contractor to drive and supply the tunnel. The paper addresses the approach used to launch, re-launch and recover the TBM and touches briefly on muck volume control and monitoring plus settlement monitoring and the performance achieved. Also of interest is a unique solution to a difficult launch situation involving a secant pile tieback wall designed with several rows of double I-beam steel walers spanning the eye at the West Portal under the I-5 freeway.

Our colleagues cannot in the future earn reputations and medals for achievements in milling and smelting ore and for successful management of mining companies, if some one doesn't keep finding and mining the ore to mill and smelt and to provide the basis for the good management. Good ore seems sometimes to be quite helpful to good management, and good ore is not as easy to find as it used to be. And there are still more reasons, why—when this honor had been decided upon and named for Mr. Daniel C. Jackling—it should be initially conferred on Reno H. Sales. . The terms of reference of the award are that it should be conferred upon an individual working in the fields of mining, geology, geophysics, who has made an outstanding contribution to the progress of technology in one or more of those fields. And in this initial year (the earlier years are the easiest) just that was done. I think I could get away with it amongst the old-timers of my generation if I say that this time they made the award to the individual, who made the outstanding contribution. But, as Al Smith used to say, "Let's look at the record." Really, the record is mixed up a little with extra-lateral litigation—the old-time "apex cases" under Section 2322 of the Revised Statutes. Reno Sales doesn't like such litigation, but there is little question that the urgency, generated by conflicting claims of intra-limital and extra-lateral rights, and consequent necessity for committing to records and maps the complications of Butte structure, did advance—and by several years—the first continuous, accurate, systematic, and scientific portrayal of the geological and mineralogical details of what is, after all, the most important and the most complicated copper district—at least in North America. Prior to Sales' time, some of the most eminent of geologists often waived details. One geologist took the judge to the window to show him the Rarus fault going through a notch in the Continental Divide. The entertaining testimony in the Bluebird litigation was as perfect in literary style as it was innocent of the criteria by which faulting and lack of continuity of vein structure are now recognized. At any rate, this need for an accurate record of structure was in the background—to whatever extent it was, or was not, the etiological agent—for formation of the Geological Department of the Amalgamated Copper Co. in and about the year 1900. Charles W. Goodale was at that time the head of the Boston & Montana, and John D. Ryan succeeded William Scallon as the president of Anaconda Copper Mining Co. in 1905. Horace V. Winchell, for years a specialist in extra-lateral litigation, was perhaps the man who at that date had the vision, the persuasive weight with the management, and the willingness to defend the idea of large current expenditures (as then viewed) for a complete and sys-
