This U.S. Bureau of Mines report describes a rock mechanics instrumentation program conducted in a shallow underground coal mine in central Illinois. This research program was designed to provide a basic understanding of the structural behavior of entry intersections. A wide variety of instruments and measurement techniques including hydraulic borehole pressure cells, multiple-point borehole extensometers, roof bolt compression pads, and overcoring were employed to monitor roof stresses, pillar loading, strata movement, floor heave, and bolt loading before, during, and after intersection development. A summary of intersection design theories, failure modes, and support techniques is included and instrumentation installation procedures and analysis methods are presented. The study identified two critical parameters that affect intersection stability: in situ horizontal stresses and geological discontinuities. Important design parameters for improving intersection stability are roof span and intersection geometry.

A variety of commercial detonators (fuse type and electric instantaneous and delay types) were subjected to impact and thermal stimuli to determine initiation stimulus levels and the dominant parameters in resistance to initiation. In the impact trials the detonators were impacted along their length to find the most sensitive region; threshold initiation limits obtained for these regions ranged from 3.47 to 20.82 joules (2.6 to 15.4 ft-lb). The friction sensitivity of the explosive component was an important parameter in determining sensitivity; various construction features of nonexplosive components played a role as well. In the thermal sensitivity trials, the detonators were heated from ambient to 100° C at an average rate of about 1.0° C/min, and thereafter at 0.5° C/min until they exploded; the explosion temperatures observed ranged from 121° to 188° C. These temperatures correlated quite well with the reaction temperatures of certain characteristic explosive components used by different manufacturers. The data also indicated an effect of confinement on explosion temperatures of detonators.

Multiphase flow in the widely used Vanyukov furnace was numerically studied. An unsteady three-dimensional and three-phase flow model was firstly built using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software ANSYS FLUENT®, and then solved with the volume of fluid (VOF) and k - ??model. The results showed that the proposed model could be used to predict the multiphase movement, the slag/air fluctuation, the vortex formation, and effects of structural and operational parameters. By fast Fourier transform (FFT), the dominant frequency of density with time signal was calculated as 0.29 Hz. The analysis of different injection flow rates of enriched air indicated that this variable has a major effect on the mean slag velocity. The peak mean velocity increased from 2.17 to 4.99 m/s while the flow rate of enriched air varied from 70 to 160 m/s. The proposed model provides a method to optimize the furnace structure and operating conditions for the best furnace performance and lowest energy consumption.

More and more, today’s mining geologists are asked to identify and create 3D value domains for multidisciplinary usage: grade definition, geometallurgical performance and geotechnical characteristics, to name a few. Often, that domain shape is the result of an assumed or conjectured value as a surrogate to a set of conditions (eg kaolinite-rich, sericite alteration). Would it not be instead better to create the respective domain through identification of a consistent quantifiable geologically-based pattern as its basis?Critical to the identification of patterns is the transformation of 3D point data into a model by a method that uses few, if any, preselected thresholds. Too often we complicate the reviews of the modelled data by prejudging the value range of interest. And when we do revert to 2D views (ie sections and plans), we tend to only examine numbers or line traces. These hinder and obscure identification of geological patterns particularly in deposits of complex geology. Instead, these data should be looked at with minimal prejudgment and interrogated in 2D space by one of the best and most eye-catching display types: filled contour plots.Here we present two different processes that transform data with minimal preselection into formats that allow for pattern recognition by filled contour plots. These are: probability assisted constrained kriging (PACK) and multiple interval interpolant formation (Aranz Geo’s Leapfrog® software). The former creates a 3D model of probabilities on a threshold value; the latter creates numerous (=10), regularly-binned 3D interval interpolants. The results of each method are examined as filled contours over numerous sections or plans. Any distinct patterns are quickly discerned thereby readily identifying the best value to base the creation of a domain. These processes therefore provide a way to marry recent advances in software tools with what is supposed a geologist’s core skill: pattern recognition.CITATION:Juras, S, McKinley, S and Uludag, E, 2017. Vaporization of a solvent into an airstream at temperatures above the flash point of the solvent is hazardous if vapor is liberated at a rate that is sufficient to produce a flammable mixture. In may operations, the formation of such a mixture is prevented by rapid diluton of the vapors with air. The minimum air requirements for the dilution process are determined by the composition of the lower limit mixture at the temperature and pressure of interest. Because limits of flammability cannot always be calculated with sufficient accuracy for a proposed operation, they .rust often be determined experimentally. The present Bureau of Mines investigation was prompted by an application in which the lower limits of flammability of a number of solvent mixtures were required over a range of temperatures at atmospheric pressure. These limits were to be used along with available solvent-vaporization-rate data to establish minimum airflow rates needed to prevent the formation of flammable mixtures in an industrial process. Lower limits of flammability were determined for a number of mixtures containing methyl ethyl ketone, tetrahydrofuran, toluene, ethyl alcohol, and ethyl acetate in dry air-at atmospheric pressure and temperatures between 16° and 200° C. The experimental values were found to be in good agreement at with those predicted by Le Chatelier's law; variations with temperature were in fair agreement with those predicted by a modified Burgess-Wheeler law.

"The Anomaly A area of the Clarence Stream gold deposits in southwestern New Brunswick contains mineralized structures that bear geometrical relationships to regional folding events. The four mineralized zones of Anomaly A (AD, MW, 93, and Murphy) are hosted by turbiditic graywacke, quartzose wacke, siltstone, and argillite sequences of the Kendall Mountain Formation. A regional scale structural analysis reflects at least four deformational events, three of which appear to control the folded geometry of Anomaly A (D2, D3, and D4). F2 and F3 folds are coaxial and are refolded into a dome and basin geometry by F4 folds. The mineralized zones are subparallel to axial surfaces of F2 folds. Structural analysis of a mineralized zone exposed at surface indicates that gold mineralization is hosted by a quartz-vein system that comprises veins generated during both D2 and D3. Threedimensional representations of Anomaly A created using drill-core data and ®GoCAD suggest that the quartz-vein system was emplaced in fault structures during D2 as well as within brecciated dilation zones during D3. Three of the four zones that make up Anomaly A have F2 hinge surfaces that can be linked through a geometry compatible with the style of F3 and F4 folds. The apparent continuity of these three zones indicates the potential for kilometer-scale mineralized structures at Anomaly A. This report describes the second phase of an investigation aimed at obtaining a wider knowledge of the problems involved in smelting titaniferous magnetites. Liquidus temperature measurements were made on selected synthetic slag compositions in the Ti02 -A1203 -FeO-Si02 -CaO-MgO system. Both the hot-stage microscope and the strip furnace (melting-holding-quenching technique) were used during test procedure to determine the effects of CaO, MgO, and SiO2 on the liquidus temperature of slags. The liquidus temperatures of slags studied ranged from 1,241° to 1,900° C. The lowest liquidus temperature for each Ti02 plus A1203 plus FeO weight-percent generally occurred when the difference between CaO plus MgO and Si02 was less than 12 weight-percent. In this investigation substitution of either CaO or MgO for SiO2 and MgO for CaO raised the liquidus temperature of more than 50 percent of the reported base slags when Ti02, A1203, and FeO contents were held constant. The results of this investigation may serve as guidelines for determining flux requirements in smelting a wide variety of titaniferous magnetite concentrates or ores.

The year 1980 on the whole was not a good year for the world's mineral industry. The general upturn of activities in 1979 after a rather poor 1978 showing was not maintained with a number of key measurement standards showing downturns. Most notably, the world's steel and petroleum industries recorded significant reductions in output, the former in response to markedly lower demand levels and the latter partly in response to lower industrial consumption owing to general economic conditions and partly owing to successes in campaigns for the reduction of energy use in general and petroleum product use in particular among major importing nations that were feeling the trade balance pinch of ever-higher oil prices. During 1980, a number of political events-some international in scope, some confined to single nations-had significant influence upon world mineral industry activities and mineral commodity supplies, and other political happenings had the potential to significantly affect the industry in future times.

Flow rate into the thickener or clarifier a) As the flow rate increases into the thickener or clarifier ?retention time? decreases which causes a greater affect hydraulically on the settling solids. So as the flow rate increases it will generally mean an increase in flocculant dosing rate. b) As the flow rate decreases into the thickener or clarifier the retention time increases which reduces the hydraulic affect on settling, improving settling rates. This will generally mean that as the flow rate decreases, we will decrease the flocculant dose rate.

A study of mine air quality was conducted using the latest advanced continuous monitoring instruments. An overview of the various interacting variables in the mine that affect air quality is presented. One effort involves the evaluation of portable instruments, the development of measurement techniques, sample analysis procedures and computer programs for statistical analysis of measurement data, and the application of the instruments and techniques to the measurement of the concentrations of CO, CO2, NO, NO2 and particulate matter in a lead and a copper underground mine. A second effort involves the first application of the Mine Air Monitoring Laboratory (MAML), a mobile trailer containing laboratory type instruments, sampling and data systems for the measurement of CO, CO2, NO, NO2 and particulate matter. The data from the MAML for blasting and for operating diesel equipment are analyzed and presented in various plots.

South Deep Gold Mine, owned by Gold Fields Ltd., is situated near Westonaria in the Gauteng Province of South Africa and mines the conglomerate bands of the Upper Elsburg reefs (Mondeor Conglomerate Formation) of the Witwatersrand Supergroup and the Ventersdorp Contact Reef (VCR) of the Ventersdorp Supergroup. The stoping and underground developments are mechanized. The Upper Elsburg reefs are mined by a variety of mining methods, including mechanized drift and fill, modified drift and bench, longhole stoping, and low-profile mining. Optimal mine design and scheduling for deep-level mechanized mining are complex, and success is highly dependent on detailed, robust, and accurate geological and geostatistical models. Geological structures significantly influence the sedimentological characteristics, distribution, and preservation of the Upper Elsburg reefs and VCR. Accordingly, particular emphasis is placed on the generation of a mine-scale structural model that accommodates the relationships between the older north-trending fault systems (West Rand and Panvlakte faults) and younger east-trending dextral wrench faults. Results from underground mapping, borehole intersections, and highresolution three-dimensional seismic data have been integrated to produce coherent three-dimensional geological models. The Upper Elsburg reefs suboutcrop against the VCR and comprise an easterly diverging clastic wedge, thickening from the suboutcrop position, to approximately 130 m at the mine?s eastern boundary. The Upper Elsburg reefs are characterized by conglomerate and quartzite bands forming multiple, stacked, upward-fining unconformity-bounded couplets. Palaeocurrent directions are dominantly from west-northwest to east-southeast, indicating that the more proximal deposits are preserved close to the suboutcrop, with distal facies to the east. Sedimentological modelling is applied to individual stratigraphic units and caters for facies definition. This is achieved through channel width (CW) kriging and fitting of type sections to borehole and mapping data. Homogenous geological geozones for each stratigraphic unit are thus defined within individual structural blocks on the basis of those sedimentological parameters that have been found to have a positive spatial correlation to gold concentration. These geozones then serve as constraints to the evaluation of the orebody. This contribution presents a summary of the modelling processes that are currently applied in the development of high-confidence, timeously produced geological models that are essential input for mineral resource estimation and mechanized mine planning and scheduling.

Development of the Batu Hijau copper project was completed in the fourth quarter of 1999 with the formal handover and start-up of ore processing facilities. The project began in August 1996 when the owner, PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara (PTNNT), awarded an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC)contract to Fluor Daniel (FD) for the development of the project. This included a copper concentrator, port, power plant, town site and infrastructure. PTNNT managed the development of the mine and the procurement of the mine equipment. In 1996, Batu Hijau was the largest mining project ever undertaken. Developing the Batu Hijau Mine was complex. It involved the work of thousands of people in all parts of the world to plan, engineer, procure, fabricate and manufacture equipment, supply and deliver materials and equipment, and build the plant.

Flame cutting and welding is one of the major causes of fires and explosions in underground U.S. coal mines. On May 20, 2006, a flame cutting operation at the Darby Mine No. 1 led to an explosion that resulted in five fatalities. On January 22, 2003, another explosion caused by flame cutting at the McElroy Mine resulted in three fatalities and three serious injuries. On June 22, 1999, a flame cutting and welding operation at the Loveridge Mine caused a fire that resulted in sealing of the mine for an extended period. Finally, on March 19, 1992, an explosion at the Blacksville No. 1 Mine that was caused by welding resulted in four fatalities. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a study on fires and explosions in underground U.S. coal mines that were caused by flame cutting and welding operations to determine the root causes of these types of fires and explosions. The methodology included interviewing mining personnel who perform flame cutting or welding operations in underground U.S. coal mines and visiting mines to observe these operations, and MSHA reports of investigations and accidents statistics were analyzed. The results were used to identify and compare differences between flame cutting and welding practices and techniques in small and large mines, Eastern and Western mines, low seam and high seam mines, room and pillar and longwall mines, and between experienced miners and new miners. As a result of this study, best practices and interventions were developed to reduce the number of fires and explosions caused by flame cutting and welding. This paper provides a summary of this work. This report presents the results of a program to improve, using existing and proven technology, unstable highwall conditions through better blasting practices in Appalachian strip coal mines. Better borehole blasting agent distribution and optimization of burden, spacing, and delay periods allowing satisfactory breakage with minimal backbreak were the objectives. At a selected field site, geologic conditions were closely examined with regard to joint orientation and spacing, and resulting slope stability considerations. A test series of eight blasts was completed and the resultant highwall monitored by repetitive photography. The study of drilling and blasting economics along with equipment performance led to an economic model of blast parameters and the identification of blast design cost benefits. The work demonstrated that small strip mining companies' are able to achieve a more stable highwall excavation utilizing presently available technology, equipment, and explosive products at improved operational cost and safety.

The Bureau of Mines constructed a process research unit (PRU) to demonstrate new technology for extracting zinc from sphalerite concentrates. Up to 9 kg/hr of sphalerite (ZnS) concentrate was reacted at ambient pressure in the PRU with 80 pct sulfuric acid at 160° to 180° C to produce zinc sulfate and elemental sulfur. The PRU consisted of a three-stage glass reactor system: a 4-liter premix stage in which feed was slurried with 78 to 82 pct H2S04, a 40-liter stirred reactor, and a ISO-liter settling stage in which high reaction conversions were effected and excess H2S04 for recycle was separated from insoluble ZnS04 and sulfur. Evolution of sulfur-containing gases was minimized by sub-surface addition of acid feed slurry to the stirred reactor and by exclusion of air from the reactor to prevent the oxidation of elemental sulfur. Conversion of zinc to zinc sulfate averaged over 99 pct at the optimum acid concentration of 80 pct. Total sulfur losses (primarily S02) were less than 2 pct of the sulfur in the sphalerite. Elemental sulfur remained in the insoluble portion of the settled reactor product after leaching with simulated spent zinc electrolyte containing sulfuric acid. The sulfur residue contained 75 to 89 pct sulfur. Neutral zinc sulfate, required for zinc electrowinning processes, was separated from the sulfuric acid leach solution by crystallization at -15° C as zinc sulfate heptahydrate (ZnS04?7H20). The crystallization operation simultaneously effected a partial concentration of the recycled electrolyte solution by removing water.

The Department of Mining Engineering at the University of Pretoria accepts that the process of teaching and learning improvement is an ongoing exercise with the ultimate aim to deliver well-rounded mining engineering practitioners. Various challenges impact on the success of this process. An integrated and innovative process was developed and is followed in the Department to overcome these challenges. The aim of the Department is to apply a holistic teaching approach by introducing multiple integrated interventions with regards to teaching and learning strategies. Three phases of this process are discussed in this article, and are illustrated in Figure 1. During the first phase, prior to 1999, several teaching and learning challenges were identified in the Department of Mining Engineering. These challenges are discussed in the next section. In the current phase, a variety of interventions to address the challenges are being developed, implemented (in some cases piloted), and evaluated. The future phases will focus on the improvement, successes, and full roll-out of current interventions, as well as on training, development, and support for all staff members to participate in the process. The object of this study was to determine the economic feasibility of hydraulically transporting Sandow (Tex.) lignite 100 miles and dewatering and thermally drying the transported lignite to a surface-dry condition. The most important factors involved in the feasibility of hydraulic transport, are the degradation incurred during transit, the length of the line, and the cost of alternative methods of shipment. In pipeline tests in which roughly 75 miles of hydraulic transport was simulated the percentage of minus-325-mesh solids increased from about 1 to 41 percent for both lignite and bituminous coal; in the micron sizes the coal fared considerably better than the lignite. Such degradation, even though it enhances flow through the pipe-line, severely aggravates the dewatering problem on lignite. Cost studies indicated that continuous vacuum filters offer the most economical means of dewatering minus-1/8-inch material. Surface moisture, if high, must be removed by relatively expensive thermal drying.
