In the western United States occurs deposits of low-grade chromite which, when concentrated, may be reduced to ferrochromiun in electric furnaces that derive energy from dams and hydro plants now in course of construction. Montana ore was chosen for the experiments. A 1-ton sample contained 26 percent Cr203, 17 percent Fed, and 17 percent SiO2, plus other constituents, and the concentrates therefrom assayed 44 -percent Cr203, 23 percent FeO, and 0.79 per cent SiO2, Gravity concentration was found to be the best method. Ferrochromiums are of two grades - high-carbon with 66 to 70 percent chromium and 4-112 to 6 percent carbon and low-carbor with 67 to 72 percent chromium and 0.6 to 2 percent carbon. Both are made in electric furnaces that use anthracite as a reducer and suit-able fluxes. The concentrates mentioned mere smelted under different conditions, and it was concluded that domestic ore could be reduced with anthracite to produce a ferrochromium of S to 10 percent carbon content at yields of 90 percent without retreating the slag. This carbon may be lowered to required proportion with calcium and silicon, but the former requires a great excess and the latter leaves an alloy high in silicon. INTRODUCTION Chromite occurs in several regions of the United States, but the known deposits of this mineral have not been large enough or high grade enough to permit them to compete under normal conditions with imported ores. There are numerous deposits of chrome ore along the West coast. These are generally conceded to be relatively small, although some -were worked during the World War. There are some indications of a revival of interest in California chromites. Montana contains large chromite deposits in Stillwater and Sweetgrass Counties. The utilization of chromite for ferrochromium and. the manufacture of stainless steels is distinctly an electrometallurgical problem; consequently, a study of methods for treatment of chromite might pave the way for the establishment of new electrometallurgical industries in the Western States. This thought is supported by the cheap power that is soon to become available from the western dams. Farther, submarginal domestic chrome deposits might thus be turned into profitable producers.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) Information and Analysis Directorate collects worldwide data on virtually every commercially important nonfuel mineral commodity. These data form the base for tracking and assessing the health of the minerals sector of the U.S. economy. The USBM's data collection activity was instituted by the 47th Congress in an appropriations act of August 7, 1882 (22 Stat. 329), which placed the collection of mineral statistics on an annual basis. The most recent authority for the USBM survey activity is the National Materials and Minerals Policy, Research and Development Act of 1980 (Public Law 96-479, 96th Congress). This act strengthens protection for proprietary data provided to the U.S. Department of the Interior by persons or firms engaged in any phase of mineral or mineral-material production or consumption.

Air pollutants in exhaust gas produced from LP-gas (propane) were studied using both laboratory engines and vehicles. The objective of the study was to evaluate engine parameters relating to the advantageous use of propane as a low-pollution fuel. Some comparisons are made between gasoline, natural gas, and propane. Results show that engines can operate over a wider range of A/F with minimum carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emission when using propane than when using gasoline. Mixture enrichment using propane is unnecessary during cold starts, thereby eliminating the emission penalty during warmup. Carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emission using propane are unaffected by ambient temperature. The photochemical reactivity of hydrocarbon emission is considerably lower with propane than with gasoline.

A reconnaissance for sources of scandium and a metallurgical investigation of recovery methods for byproduct scandium from uranium mill solutions were conducted by the Bureau of Mines. The work on scandium was undertaken to obtain information on domestic resources and to explore and develop recovery procedures in consonance with the Bureau's long-range program for conservation and wise utilization of mineral resources. The element scandium is widely distributed in the earth's crust in trace amounts, but it seldom occurs as an important constituent in any mineral. An exception is thortveitite, (Sc,Y)2 Si207) a rare mineral that contains various amounts of scandium and yttrium and may contain up to 42 percent scandium oxide (SC203). Knowledge of the chemistry of scandium has expanded rapidly in recent years (1, 4, 9)4 but only fragmentary information is available about the metal because it is still largely a laboratory curiosity without established uses (2, 3). A recent study shows some of the physical proper-ties of the metal are (1) density of 3.05 grams per cubic centimeter) (2) melting point of 1,540° C, (3) hexagonal close-packed structure) (4) hardness of about 50 Brinell (500-kilogram load), and (5) an alloy behavior similar to yttrium and rare-earth metals (2). The price of $2,850 a pound for scandium oxide of 99.9 percent purity and $2,700 a pound for oxide of 99 percent purity reflects the scarcity and complex chemistry of the element.

Although many mining companies apply ergonomic principles, it is usually done either informally and/or reactively. An example of an informal approach is replacing worn equipment (such as seats) with models that have ergonomic features. Another example is modifying a task to eliminate safety hazards. Such approaches reduce risk-factor exposures that can lead to musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). A reactive approach is followed when modifying a task/ equipment after an MSD occurs. However, neither of these approaches involves a systematic method of proactively applying ergonomic principles to actually prevent injuries or illnesses. This paper discusses how Vulcan Materials Company applied ergonomic principles and implemented interventions to reduce risk-factor exposures.

Pyrolysis (destructive distillation) techniques developed at the Bureau of Mines to determine the yield and quality of the products from coal were used to convert municipal (household) and industrial refuse into potentially useful solids, liquids, and gases without adding to environmental pollution. The tests demonstrated that a ton of municipal refuse can be converted into 154 to 424 pounds of solid residue, 0.5 to 6 gallons of tar, 1 to 4 gallons of light oil, 97 to 133 gallons of liquor, 16 to 32 pounds of ammonium sulfate, and 7,380 to 18,058 cubic feet of gas. A ton of industrial refuse, consisting of paper, rags, and cardboard, can be converted to 618 to 838 pounds of residue, 1.5 to 3 gallons of light oil, 68 to 75 gallons of liquor, 12 to 23 pounds of ammonium sulfate, and 9,270 to 14,065 cubic feet of gas. The energy from the gas is more than sufficient to provide the heat for the pyrolysis.

The number of persons fatally injured in the California petroleum industry in 1931 was 30, a decrease of 20 fatalities or 40 per cent from the number killed in 1930. As a result of the decrease in the number of fatalities for 1931, the fatality curve of tie California petroleum industry reached its lowest point in nine years. Although reductions in personnel--which permitted the retention of a select and experienced class of workmen, decreased active field-development work, and curtailed production--undoubtedly have had a marked effect on reducing the number of fatalities in 1931, the decrease also has resulted from continued accident-prevention efforts. Statistics show that a direct relationship exists between development activity and the number of men accidentally killed in the drilling and producing division of the California petroleum industry. For example, when the average number of drilling wells in 1930 was 29 per cent less than in 1929, the number of men accidentally killed at drilling wells dropped 48 per cent; and when the average number of drilling wells in 1931 decreased 52 per cent from 1930, the number of fatalities at drilling wells decreased 58 per cent. The relationship between field-development work and fatality frequency is significant because each year at least 50 per cent of all the fatalities in the California petroleum industry occur in the drilling and producing division. This relationship should serve to guide the accident-prevention efforts of the industry, especially in the drilling and producing division, toward checking an increase in fatal accidents when development activity again takes an upward trend.

In 1984 and 1986, at the request of the U.S. Forest Service, the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral appraisal of the 315,000-acre Lemhi Range study area. This area is located in Lemhi and Custer Counties, about 25 mi south of Salmon, Idaho, and is in the Northern Rocky Mountain physiographic province, Topography is generally rugged with elevations ranging from 5,600 ft to about 11,350 ft above sea level. Since the 1880's, approximately 500 mining claims have been located within the study area; about 400 were current at the time of this investigation. Also, part or all of 12 patented mining claims are in the study area. During Bureau field work, forty-four mineralized sites were examined. The sites had been explored by 80 adits, 14 shafts, and about 140 pits and trenches. At least five properties in the study area have had significant production; the adjacent Mohawk, Grace Phelan, and Snowbird claims had a combined total of 136,000 oz of silver and 67,000 lb of lead; production at the Brown Bull was about 14,800 oz of silver and 115,000 lb of lead; the Portland mine yielded an unrecorded amount of silver. The Hilltop mine, located a few hundred feet outside the study area, produced 125,000 oz of silver, 2.7 million lb of lead, 87,000 lb of zinc, and 62,000 lb of copper from mineralized zones that might extend into the study area. More than 10,000 lb of copper were produced at the Blue Jay mine from workings located about 1,000 ft outside the study area. The Bureau of Mines investigation did not reveal the presence of identified resources in the study area. However, several areas contain mineralized sites and are known occurrences. Some of these warrant additional work to further delineate the mineralization and possibly determine identified resources.

PRODUCTION of cesium, cesium salts, and rubidium salts in the United States declined somewhat from 1961 levels; rubidium production was virtually unchanged. Imports of pollucite declined because consumption was supplied partially out of inventory. Domestic Production.-About 50 tons of pollucite was reported mined at the Tin Mountain mine in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The Dow Chemical Co., Midland, Mich., MSA Research Corp., Callery, Pa., and Penn Rare Metals, Inc., Revere, Pa., produced a total of 159 pounds of cesium. Rubidium production remained essentially the same as in 1961. Shipments of the two metals by these companies and by American Potash & Chemical Corp., Trona, Calif., totaled 279 pounds. Production of cesium and rubidium salts by American Potash & Chemical Corp., Penn Rare Metals, Inc., and Rocky Mountain Research, Inc., Denver, Colo., declined substantially during 1962.

The Bureau of Mines conducted field-scale experiments in underground gasification of coal with oxygen-enriched air. A path about 140 feet long was linked at the rate of LO feet per day through a coalbed hydraulically fractured with a mixture of starch gel and sand. During the best gasification period, which extended for 2-1/2 days, 785,000 std. c.f. per day of 124-B.t.u. gas was produced. In other periods the heating value at times was almost 300 B.t.u. per std, c.f,, but sustained production of such gas was not achieved. During gasification, a total of 50 tons of coal was gasified and 114 tons of coal was carbonized. Approximately 12 million B, t .u. per foot of nominal path was recovered at the surface.

Emanation coefficients of 950 samples of domestic uranium ore were successfully and rapidly determined with fair precision by modifications of the closed-can, gamma-only assay method, using commercially available or similar equipment. Coefficients range from <1 to 91 percent. Emanation varies considerably within each mine and area, but distinct differences among major mining areas were found, ranging from 7.5 percent for Moss Back Member, Chinle Formation, Southwest Lisbon Valley, Utah, to 56.6 percent for Ft. Union Formation (?), Powder River Basin, Wyoming. Coefficients also vary with (1) uranium mineralogy; (2) radium mineralogy; (3) lithology of host rocks; (4) grain size of uranium and radium minerals; (5) comminution of ore; (6) estimated porosity and permeability; (7) moisture content; (8) ore grade; (9) supposed mobility of deposits; age of deposits is unknown but limited by (10) age of host rocks which shows only doubtful correlation with emanation. Data obtained may be used to evaluate effects of investigated parameters on radon concentration in mines and thus to select efficient control measures. Drill-core emanation data allow estimates of probable radon problems in undeveloped deposits.

The work described was conducted to develop standards for the application of wire rope clips on wire rope. These standards include optimum number of clips and clip nut torques for wire rope sizes 1/4 through 2-1/4 inches, when used for forming an eye attachment in wire rope. Wire rope test specimens with clip attachments were load tested on tensile testing machines to determine an effective combination of clip nut torques and number of clips for each size of wire rope to develop efficiencies above 90 percent of the catalog ultimate rope strength.

There was little change during 1988 in the production of minerals in Burundi. The Government of Burundi, which banned all commercial mining operations in the country in 1979, lifted the ban on mining of alluvial gold deposits and started a program of small-scale artisan gold mining in October. Along with the legal mining of gold, licensed gold trading counters were established. Other mineral commodities produced were kaolin clay, lime, and peat. In compliance with the Government ban, the only mineral wealth exploited for commercial sale and export was alluvial gold. Through financial assistance from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (World Bank) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), a study to inventory the country&apos;s mineral resources continued throughout the year. As part of this study, during the year, a West German company undertook a drilling program to further outline the nickel reserves of the Musongati area in central Burundi. Results of the work as of yearend were disappointing, with only 12 million tons of ore identified with better than 2% nickel content proven. Investigations also continued during the year regarding the centrally located deposits of vanadium-bearing titaniferous magnetite. A Norwegian company contracted to prepare a prefeasibility study for developing the deposit. The British Sulphur Corp. Ltd. was nearing completion of its $1.2 million2 study of the phosphatic limestone deposit at Matongo-Bandaga at yearend. Ore reserves of about 17 million tons grading 11% phosphorus pentoxide (P2O3) had been identified. The phosphate zone overlies a carbonatite rock, which could provide the basis for a cement industry. Additional drilling was planned for 1984. Exploration for gold was underway in 19S3 in northern Burundi through UNDP funding. Several primary deposits of shallow semimassive sulfides with gold values ranging from traces to 11 grams per ton had been discovered. The Belizean economy registered a modest real growth of 1.3% during 1981. The gross domestic product (GDP), based on current prim was $121 million&apos; with an inflation-rate of 10%. The country received $19 million in economic aid during 1981. In early 1981, Belize&apos;e four commercial banks raised the interest on deposits to 15% in an effort to curb capital outflow. During 1981, the financial situation deteriorated somewhat, particularly the balance of payments. For the year the total value of imports exceeded exports by almost $38 million, while the Government continued to maintain a fairly free trade policy. Import duties and term averaged about 8% on essential item and 40% on nonessential ones.

Mine fires constitute one of the greatest threats to the health and safety of those working in the underground environment and each event has the potential for disastrous consequences. Of the major mine fires and thermal events that have occurred in the United States in the last 6 years, it is estimated that remotely installed seals could have been used in 63% of the events to control fire growth or to aid in fire suppression work. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting full-scale tests at the NIOSH Lake Lynn Experimental Mine to evaluate and improve remote mine seal construction technology. The main focus of this work is to develop reliable technology that will completely close the mine opening from floor-to-roof and rib-to-rib. This paper presents the results of remote seal installations using grout-based materials.

This report is one of a series covering the mineral resources of the Nation. It briefly describes most of the known tungsten deposits in Gila, Yavapai, and Mohave Counties, Ariz. Many of the descriptions are taken from the reports of previous examinations by Bureau of Mines engineers, and from Defense Minerals Exploration Administration files. Where a previous examination had been made, and an inquiry disclosed that little or no work had been done since that time, pertinent information from the report was used in this paper with acknowledgment of the source. However, the majority of the descriptions is from field examinations by the author. In the past 3 years (July 1956-May 1959) only necessary annual assessment work was conducted on nearly all the properties described in this paper. There was no active mining on any of the properties examined.

Surveys to establish the quantity and quality of coals available for metallurgical, industrial, and energy use, investigations to develop better mining methods, and studies aimed at improving the health and safety of those who mine the coal highlighted Bureau of Mines research and technologic work on coal in 1968. Also being developed are more efficient methods of coal preparation, transportation, storage, and utilization. Supplementing this effort are projects designed to assure minimum disturbance of land, water, and air resources. Research centers and laboratories of the Bureau of Mines are listed in appendix A. Publications released during 1968 are cited with the various projects and in appendix C. Organizations that cooperated in the work in various ways are cited in appendix B.

Educational campaigns conducted by the manufacturers of explosives, the Bureau of Mines, mining companies, and safety organizations have contributed greatly in reducing accidents caused by explosives arid blasting. Despite these campaigns and the dissemination of information, accidents from explosives and blasting continue to be the direct cause of scores of fatalities and hundreds of nonfatal accidents annually, not only in the mineral industry but essentially wherever explosives are used. The experience of many mining companies and other users of explosives has proved that accidents from explosives can be prevented or averted by the proper training of employees in the handling and using of explosives and by the enforcement of definite rules and instructions for their use. Unfortunately, throughout the years numerous false impressions and ideas have grown up and around the use of explosives. Many of these can be traced back to the manner in which the users of explosives were originally taught, if instructed at all; and as with many types of misinformation in nearly all walks of life, those false ideas are decidedly persistent and being so cause much damage. Many if not most of the users of explosives gained their knowledge of explosives and blasting by watching others and more or less "absorbing" the procedures and thrones of the other fellow, who acted unconsciously as teacher or instructor. A study of explosives accidents reveals the results of such "teachings" when the causes of the accidents are determined, and as might be expected the results very often are far from good. This is the seventh in a series of reports on properties of commercial motor fuels, made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Cooperative Fuel Research (C.F.R.) Committee and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first report gave data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36.3/ The present report covering 1,875 samples represents the products of 83 companies plus those from the Pacific coast, which were averaged by the Pacific Coast Technical Group before being submitted and are published exactly as they were submitted. For the regular grade 985 samples consisting of 73 different brands are averaged. The premium grade consists of 489 samples of 40 different brands. The third grade has 401 samples averaged from 51 different brands. In this report the districts have been reduced to 21 by combining North and South Texas into one district. Fl Paso samples are reported with the South Rocky Mountain district, and Amarillo, Tex., has been included with the Middle Rocker Mountain district. In the present survey samples from Fort Smith, Ark., have been included in the Tulsa area, Indianapolis has been included in the St. Louis district. Cleveland represents the State of Ohio. Samples from Little Rock, Ark., and North Carolina have been included in the Memphis district. The Pittsburgh district includes samples only from this State and Wheeling, W. Va. The actual sampling points in each area are indicated an table 1.
