"Abstract - Rare-element pegmatites may host several economic commodities, such as tantalum (Taoxide minerals), tin (cassiterite), lithium (ceramic-grade spodumene and petalite), and cesium (pollucite). Key geological features that are common to pegmatites in the Superior province of Ontario and Manitoba, Canada, and in other large tantalum deposits worldwide, can be used in exploration.An exploration project for rare-element pegmatites should begin with an examination of a regional geology map. Rare-element pegmatites occur along large regional-scale faults in greenschist and amphibolite facies metamorphic terranes. They are typically hosted by mafic metavolcanic or metasedimentary rocks, and are located near peraluminous granite plutons (A/CNK > 1.0). Once a peraluminous granite pluton has been identified, then the next step is to determine if the pluton is barren or fertile. Fertile granites have elevated rare element contents, Mg/Li ratio < 10, and Nb/Ta ratio < 8. They commonly contain blocky K-feldspar and green muscovite. Key fractionation indicators can be plotted on a map of the fertile granite pluton to determine the fractionation direction: presence of tourmaline, beryl, and ferrocolumbite; Mn content in garnet; Rb content in bulk K-feldspar; and Mg/Li and Nb/Ta ratios in bulk granite samples. Pegmatite dikes with the most economic potential for Li-Cs-Ta deposits occur the greatest distance (up to 10 km) from the parent granite.Metasomatized host rocks are an indication of a nearby rare-element pegmatite. Metasomatic aureoles can be identified by their geochemistry: elevated Li, Rb, Cs, B, and F contents; and by their mineralogy: presence of tourmaline, (Rb, Cs)-enriched biotite, holmquistite, muscovite, and rarely garnet.Once a pegmatite dike has been located, the next step is to assess its potential to contain Ta mineralization. Pegmatites with the highest degree of fractionation (and thus the most economic potential for Li-Cs-Ta) contain blocky K-feldspar with >3,000 ppm Rb, K/Rb < 30, and >100 ppm Cs; and coarsegrained green muscovite with >2,000 ppm Li, >10,000 ppm Rb, >500 ppm Cs, and >65 ppm Ta. Pegmatites with Ta mineralization usually contain Li-rich minerals (e.g., spodumene, petalite, lepidolite, elbaite, amblygonite, and lithiophilite) and may contain Cs-rich minerals (e.g., pollucite, Cs-rich beryl). The ore minerals of Ta are commonly manganotantalite, manganocolumbite, wodginite, and microlite; Ta-rich cassiterite is also commonly present. Tantalum mineralization tends to occur in albitic aplite, mica-rich (lepidolite, cleavelandite ± lepidolite), and spodumene/petalite pegmatite zones."

At a mine in central PA, high horizontal stresses have caused long running roof falls resulting in hazardous conditions for the miners and the premature abandonment of panels. Because of these conditions, the mine requested assistance of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in utilizing the &apos;advance and relieve method to mitigate the affects of horizontal stress on the mine roof. "Advance and relieve" mining involves the removal of a pillar or a portion of a pillar during development, thereby creating a cave along one side of the panel. Following cave development, the horizontal stress is relieved over the workings adjacent to the cave in the active panel. The mine has used this system in three panels with a significant reduction in stress damage and no large roof falls.

In 1989, the Connecticut Department of Transportation authorized the evaluation and design for a reconstructed Route 1 bridge over the Quinnipiac River in the City of New Haven, Connecticut. The project extends from the intersection of Route 1 with East Street, easterly for approximately 3/4 mile to the intersection of Route 1 with Wheeler Street and Stiles Street. The reconstructed roadway will be relatively on-line and widened to provide for four lanes of vehicular traffic and a single-track railway line. The existing bascule bridge and approach spans, which were constructed in 1924, will be replaced by a 270-foot span lift bridge and new approach spans. The lift bridge will have a main lift span weighing approximately 3000 tons, second largest after the Burlington Northern Bridge over the Williamette River in Portland, Oregon. The new bridge will widen the navigation channel to 24 0 feet and provide vertical clearances of 13 feet when closed and 62 feet when open. The project is located in an industrial area. Adjacent properties include retail gasoline sales, auto repair, railroad transport and bulk storage of petroleum. Existing structures include the Yale Boathouse and several retaining walls serving as containment dikes for petroleum storage tanks. The Yale Boathouse, located on the east bank of the river, was constructed in 1909-1910 and is eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.

Labrador City is some 912 air kilometers northeast of Montreal, and 417 ratl kilometers north of Sept-Iles, Quebec.Over 2,800 employees work at the Carol Project to produce some 20.0 million tonnes of concentrate and 10.5 million tonnes of pellets annually.In 1979 our Training Department started to develop the DACUM System of training for our Concentrator Operations Department.DACUM is an individualized, self-learning, training program. It is both a curriculum plan and an evaluation instrument.To date, the DACUM System has been completed for all occupations in the concentrator and work will commence shortly to develop DACUM for our Pellet Plant and Mine Operations Departments."

The demand placed on the mining industry in the past 15 years for increased production, coupled with lower grade ore and higher cost capital, has resulted in a noticeable increase in grinding mill sizes. The pressure to increase mill size continues. During the mid sixty&apos;s and early seventy&apos;s, ?larger? conventional ball mills were in the range of 13 - 16-1/2 f t. diameter (4 - 5 m) increasing by the mid 70&apos;s to 18 ft. (5.5 m) diameter. At the same time, autogenous mills expanded from 24 - 32 ft. (7.3 - 9.1 m) to the present 34 and 36 ft. (10.b and 11.0 m) diameters. These size pioneers of 16-1/2, 18, and 36 ft. diameter mills from Allis-Chalmers have been free from structural problems, because they were analyzed, modeled, designed, and field tested to meet the challenge.

In the annual report under the Explosives Act for 1905, H.M.inspectors state that over 90 percent of the accidents causing death or personal injury occurred in the use of explosives and under miscellaneous conditions to which the controlling provisions of the Act do not apply, and that such accidents caused 43 out of the 50 deaths, and 312 out of 348 cases of injury. The number of accidents grouped under the heading of “Use and Miscellaneous” is less than that for 1904 - viz., 281 against 301. By these accidents 43 persons were killed and 312 injured, as compared with 39 killed and 343 injured in 1904

"The Linatex Dewatering System is a compact, low capital and maintenance cost matched set of processing equipment suitable for solids recovery, dewatering and desliming sand-like materials in the range 3/8"" to 325 mesh ( 1). Since its introduction to North America in the early 1970s, various elements of the system have been successfully installed in a variety of applic11tions both in Canada and the U.S.A. Examples are chosen from the coal, fine aggregates, iron ore and industrial minerals industries.II. Elements of the Linatex Solids Recovery System(A) The Linatex Separator (See Fig.I)The Linatex Separator, which is the heart of the system, is a specialized type of hydrocyclone designed to give a self regulating rope discharge product. It has the familiar cyclone geometry of cylindrical and conical section, tangential inlet, apex and vortex finder. The apex is enclosed in a unique patented automatic underflow regulator consisting of a collapsible rubber sleeve, and the overflow line is a siphon-leg, with a controlled air bleed valve. The siphon leg is adjusted so as to balance the internal negative pressure acting as a closing force on the underflow regulator against the mass of slurry pressing down on it from the cone section of the Separator. With correct adjustment the underflow regulator will close drip-tight on a water only feed. As solids accumulate in the apex of the cone the weight of solids counterbalances the vacuum and cat1ses the underflow regulator to open and discharge classified material at a controlled density."

A 91 kg/h (200 lb per hr) pilot plant was constructed according to "Magnex" design. A non-compliance eastern coal which would generate more than 0.85 kg of SO2 per GJ (2.0 lb of SO2 per million Btu) upon burning was brought into compliance less than 0.52 kg of SO2 per GJ (1.2 lb SO2 per million Btu) during continuous operation of the pilot plant. Approximately 85% of the pyritic sulfur was removed while recovering 90% of the Btu of the feed coal. Pilot plant operation is summarized and preliminary economics presented. Present status of the Magnex design program is reviewed.

También se incorpora el concepto de índice de solubilidad, parámetro que sirve para diferenciar adecuadamente un mineral económico para flotación del de lixiviación y finalmente, se optimiza la secuencia anual de minado y disposición de material en botadero. En consecuencia, es importante determinar el uso de software y hardware adecuado para planeamiento de minado, ya que depende de la magnitud de la mina como en el caso deCuajone.

The safe operation of gas transmission pipelines is increasingly coming under the spotlight. Increasing environmental pressure is also forcing pipeline owners and operators to ensure the integrity of their pipelines. The integrity of a pipeline is usually determined using intelligent pigging, often referred to as In Line Inspection (ILI). However, in many cases, gas pipelines cannot be pigged for a variety of reasons. The National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE) has recently published Recommended Practice (RP) 0502, referred to as the External Corrosion Direct Assessment (ECDA) Methodology to assist pipeline owners with assessing the condition of pipelines that cannot be pigged. 2. External Corrosion Direct Assessment - NACE RP 0502 The ECDA Methodology is conducted in four phases as follows: ? Pre-Assessment ? Indirect Inspection ? Direct Examination ? Post-Assessment In the Pre-Assessment Phase, all the relevant historical and current data relating to the pipeline in question is reviewed. This covers pipeline, construction, soils/environmental, corrosion control and operational data. The aim of the Pre-Assessment Phase is to determine whether ECDA is feasible, and if so, to define the ECDA Regions and finally to select the Indirect Inspection Tools that will be used for each region. Work started on the building of the Amsterdam Concert Hall in 1880 by driving over 2000 wooden piles of 13 m on which foundation-beams out of wood and brickwork were made. During construction the design was changed. This was due to the latest German developments, requiring double walls instead of single, so that the space in between could be used for ventilation and heating. Therefore the pile load, originally designed at approximately 100 kN, increased even to 170 kN for some piles, causing settlements and unacceptable cracks in the brickwork. Settlements of up to 18 cm were measured. In 1985/1986 around 400 vibration-free Tubex-displacement-piles were installed under the Concert Hall, with a shaft of 0355 mm, a pile shoe of 0560 mm and a pile length of approximately 18 m. After these Tubex piles had been installed they took over the complete weight of the whole building, thus eliminating further settlements and damage. 95% of all the construction activities took place while the concerts went on. The chosen solution also made it possible to create a new basement under the Concert Hall as an extension for dressing-rooms etc.

In the current issue of Link-Belt News is this quotation: "Advancing waves of other people&apos;s progress sweep over the unchanging man and wash him out." As we look over the industrial world today we are struck by the many waves which are sweeping over backward industries. Mergers are being consummated in all lines of endeavor. General Motors are making radios and the Bendix Brake Company are making airplanes. Railroads which twenty years ago were called to account by the Federal Government for their efforts to form combinations are today being ordered to combine. But what is of immediate concern to the coal industry is the fact that there is now in existence or in project a total of 3,641 miles of pipe lines to carry natural gas to most of the country&apos;s industrial centers. This is the wave of progress which is sweeping toward you and me. If we are to grasp the significance of these many changes, we must widen our vision so that we may learn some- thing from &apos;the other fellow&apos;s experience. The first lesson is that cost of production alone is not a measure of profit. It is an interesting fact that the production of an article represents a definite loss until that article has been sold for a price in excess of its total cost, and the money is in the hands of the producer. If this is true, then the selling price is more important than the production cost.

Entre estos últimos, la mina Cobriza ha desarrollado un nuevo método de sostenimiento denominado "Shot Fer", el cual satisface el desarrollo de las labores mineras, asegura la estabilidad permanente de las labores subterráneas en terreno deleznable, disminuye los altos costos unitarios en el sostenimiento de las labores subterráneas y garantiza la seguridad contra los accidentes que pueda sufrir el personal que trabaja en la perforación y en las operaciones de sostenimiento.
