The unutilized iron ore fines (IOF, − 10 mm, 45% to < 60% Fe(T)) left at various mine sites during blasting and processing are rich in goethetic-hematite associated with high clay and considered a potential iron ore resource. The variation of loss on ignition (LOI) from mines to mines is based on the goethite and clay mineral content. The clay containing below 45 μm is mostly brittle, causing beneficiation problems. The IOF has an LOI of 7.83%, with high silica (5.52%) and alumina (4.57%), and 57.17% of Fe(T) subjected to both conventional deep beneficiation (CDB) and magnetization roasting using high-ash non-coking coal to adopt the suitable upgradation process. The CDB and magnetization roasting concentrate has 62.61% and 67.58% Fe(T) with 64.69% and 85.19% yield, respectively. However, the presence of 6.40% LOI in CDB makes the ore challenging for pelletization. Characterization like X-ray diffraction(XRD), scanning electron microscope(SEM), and chemical analysis was used to assess the concentrate quality and potential industrial application.

"Falcon concentrators are enhanced gravity separators designed for concentrating fine and ultrafine slurries. The Falcon UF model is unique in that it is dedicated to beneficiation of ultrafines, one key feature being that it does not make use of any fluidisation water. In a former study, we investigated the physical mechanisms that govern the transport of ultrafine particles (in the range 10 to 80 µm) inside Falcon UF concentrators, and concluded that separation efficiency is governed by differential settling. Initially, we derived and published a predictive model of the partition function under dilute conditions. The present paper proposes an extension of the initial model to concentrated ultrafine suspensions for application to industrial scenarios. The paper discusses how hindered settling has been added into the initial model to account for solid concentration effects. The modified model is tested against experiments carried out with a laboratory scale UF Falcon concentrator from dilute conditions up to 30 vol%. A good agreement between measurements and model predictions is obtained, which confirms that our hypotheses about the physics of separation inside a UF Falcon separator remain valid even at high concentrations.INTRODUCTIONThe Falcon concentrator is a fast spinning bowl that is fed at its centre of rotation. It uses centrifugal force to separate particles that are transported inside a thin liquid film that flows upward along the inclined wall of the bowl (McAlister and Armstrong, 1998). Due to differential settling, dense and coarse particles are concentrated inside the bowl whereas light and fine particles are rejected with the overflow stream. The fast rotation speed of the bowl yields high centrifugal force several hundred times the attraction of Earth. Despite the thinness of the liquid film (between 100 µm and 1 mm with a Falcon L40) where separation takes place, the Falcon concentrator can treat high flowrates (up to 30 L/min). At the bottom of the bowl, an impeller transmits the bowl rotation to the feed, which drains upward by centrifugal force as soon as it hits the base of the spinning bowl (Figure 1)."

The selective - deslime - flotation process developed by the Federal Bureau of Mines as part of its goal of maintaining an adequate supply of minerals to meet national economic and strategic needs is described. The operating parameters for the selective flocculation - cationic flotation of oxidized taconites from the western Mesabi range in Minnesota are discussed. Data from the operation of a 410 kg/hr (900 lb/hr) pilot plant employing reclaimed water are summarized for 2 types of oxidized taconites.

Graphite, a mineral form of pure carbon, is one of the most versatile minerals in industry, because of its varying physical properties and characteristics. The mineral occurs naturally in the form of tubular crystals or microcrystalline earthy lumps, or it is disseminated in rocks, which have undergone intense metamorphism. India has a large deposition of graphite minerals out of which about 43% are found in Arunachal Pradesh. However, compared to the rest of the country, the North-East Region and particularly Arunachal Pradesh has not attracted attention till date for detail investigation for characterization, beneficiation, prospecting and/or exploitation of the mineral resources including graphite. Bulk graphite sample were collected from upper Subanshiri district of Arunachal Pradesh. Chemical analysis of the representative samples were carried out and found that 7.29%, 19.60% and 6.07% of fixed carbon (FC) is present in graphite sample collected from La-Lamdak, Bopi and Taliha, Arunachal Pradesh, respectively. Chemical analysis of the ash of the graphite sample shows presence of impurities such as silica, Al2O3, Fe2O3, Ca, Mg etc in the graphite sample which are also supported by XRD and SEM-EDX investigation. The graphite samples of Arunachal Pradesh are low grade and do not fulfill the market requirement for the industrial applications. Therefore, low-grade graphite is subjected to beneficiation for the upgradation of the graphite for industrial applications. We have adopted the dispersion?cum-settling technique for the beneficiation of the graphite sample collected from Arunachal Pradesh. The FC of 40.21% with 41.17% raw graphite recovery which is equivalent to 71.02% carbon recovery have been obtained by gravity separation technique using only distilled water without any chemical reagent in case of graphite sample collected from Bopi, Arunachal Pradesh. The graphite sample is upgraded up to 47.75% FC with 41.91% raw graphite recovery, which is equivalent to 85.85% carbon recovery with the pH adjustment at 9 with NaOH. The USBM has developed new and improved physical beneficiation techniques for economically recovering potash minerals from high-clay and low-grade ore from the Permian Basin of New Mexico. With the depletion of the high-grade ores a need for changes in industry&apos;s standard methods of recovery is a must. Technology may be improved in the beneficiation of the ore prior to mineral flotation and in brine clarification from the desliming phase to effect a reduction of losses of fine potash and brine in the disposal of the clay slimes. This report summarizes the results of these tests and demonstrates the feasibility of producing products that meet the requirements of the agriculture market, namely, 95% KCl equivalent to 60% K2O with recoveries ranging between 80 and 90%.

Beneficiation of Iron Ore - Washing with Surface-Active Agent The stability of the dispersed phase in 10 wt per cent slurry of iron ore slime and fines was studied at pH 5 and different concentrations of surface-active agents. The behaviour of the dispersed phase of iron ore slime and fines is different for different surface-active agents. The improvement of iron value of slime and fines in the presence of surface-active agent is best realized at pH 8, where the Al2O3/Fe and Al2O3/SiO2 ratios in the concentrates are appreciably reduced. The polar functional group like -COO- interacts with hematite surfaces and forms outer- and inner-sphere surface complexes depending on the suspension pH and adsorbate.

Limonite is a general term for a group of amorphous iron oxide and iron hydroxide materials. It is considered as one of the very refractory iron ore types due to its wide variation in chemical composition, iron content, moisture content and easily sliming in the course of comminution. Iron grade of test sample is 25.48%, the iron minerals are mainly limonite; and the gangue minerals consist of quartz and feldspar in majority, secondarily silicate minerals. In this test work, high intensity magnetic separation (HIMS)-cationic reverse flotation and magnetic roasting-low intensity magnetic separation (LIMS) tests were conducted on limonite ore. The test results show that the concentrate with iron grade of 50.97% and recovery of 68.50% can be obtained by HIMS-cationic reverse flotation technique; while using magnetic roasting-LIMS technique, the better concentrate indexes of iron grade of 60.36% and recovery of 89.71% are achieved, and the iron grade of tailing is only 4.42%. Therefore, the magnetic roasting-LIMS technique is a better suitable method for beneficiation of low-grade limonite ore. In recent years, there is an increasing demand on manganese consumption which stems from the important role of manganese in carbon steel production. And the growing need for manganese ores makes the beneficiation of low-grade manganese ores more economical. In this study, the characterization and beneficiation studies were carried out to propose a flow sheet for typical low-grade Turkish manganese ores. For this aim, different gravity separation methods were applied. According to the mineralogical analysis, the major mineral phases are pyrolusite (MnO2) and psilomelane (MnO2) while the major gangue mineral is radiolarite. Gravity separation tests were accomplished by using jigs, shaking table, MGS (Multi Gravity Separator) and in order to obtain products with high Mn ratio, high intensity magnetic separation was also performed. As a result, different combinations of flow sheets were utilized and a concentrate assaying 56.5% Mn with 85 % recovery was obtained.

This paper is based on a study to determine the potential beneficiation opportunities for marble from Griekwastad in the Northern Cape Province. The marble was characterized mineralogically by X-ray diffraction. Major and trace elements were determined using inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy. The sample was crushed, and the crushed material beneficiated by tumbling and polishing. The resulting beads were incorporated into a variety of jewellery and other decorative items. It is concluded that the beneficiation of Griekwastad marble presents a good opportunity for value addition and job creation, provided that an effective marketing strategy for the products can be developed..

"''Purification of marine sands from Les Iles-de-la-Madeleine''This paper presents the results of the work that has been done at CRM pilot plant for «Les Silices du Golfe Inc.». Essentially the purpose of this piloting was to demonstrate, on a semi-industrial scale, the process of purification of marine sands from Les Iles-de-la-Madeleine; that had been developed by CRM Process Development Service. This purification is necessary to produce silica suitable for the glass sand and the foundry sand markets.Introduction«Les Silices du Golfe Inc.» is a company who intends to dredge marine sands around the «Les Iles-de-la-Madeleine» coasts. The material will be transported to Gaspesia where electricity, water supply, and a convenient site is available to treat it. A high purity silica intended for glass sand and foundry sand markets will be produced. The objectives of this purification process are to remove organics, calcium, feldspars and iron.Material ReceivedCRM received 50 tons of sand with Si02 varying between 80,6 and 99,3 % (see Figure.1). The highest variations in impurities were the calcium and lost on ignition. We notice direct relation between% SiO2, % CaO and % L.O.I. as you can see on the following Figures 2, 3 and 4."

Beneficiation of Nickel Lateritic Ore from Montes Claros de Goißs, Brazil Beneficiation is a key factor for both technical and economical aspects of industrial processing of nickel lateritic ores. A combination of comminution, classification and concentration stages are usually used to upgrade the metallurgical plant feed, thus resulting in both capital and operating cost reductions. This paper describes the testwork conducted on Montes Claros nickel lateritic ore in order to investigate the potential for upgrading. A comprehensive laboratory testing program included crushing, scrubbing, screening, grinding, gravity separation and attritioning, for both saprolitic and limonitic ore types from the Montes Claros deposit. The results indicated a clear potential for such an upgrade, which was later validated in a pilot plant program.

"Ironstone Resources Ltd. is developing the Clear Hills oolitic iron ore deposit in northwest Alberta, Canada. Sources of oolitic iron ore worldwide are abundant and ubiquitous, but there is currently no commercial technology to extract iron from oolitic iron ores. Mineral processing of the ore to generate a commercial iron ore concentrate is very challenging due to the nature of these ores. Accordingly, Hatch and Ironstone are developing a new pyrometallurgical process (Hatch Ironstone Chloride Segregation) to produce metallic iron from high silica and high phosphorus oolitic iron ores. Following the chloride segregation process, the treated ore is subjected to fine grinding. The iron is then separated by magnetic separation. The iron grade and phosphorus content of the final product shows a strong dependence on the separation methodology and the grind size. The pyrometallurgical process has been developed and tested at a lab-scale pilot plant. The commercialization of this technology could provide an opportunity for the development of a new alternate iron making technology. This paper presents the results of test work done on the raw iron ore to create a concentrate and also on the products of the pyrometallurgical process for the production of a high grade 90% metallic iron product.INTRODUCTION Oolite is a sedimentary rock formed from ooids – spherical particles with concentric layers. There are a number of large oolitic iron deposits where the mineralogical form features a low iron content and high concentration of impurities making them presently impossible to exploit on either a technical or economic basis. The fifteen largest oolitic iron ore deposits in the world are estimated to contain approximately 337 billion tonnes of iron ore, which would be a significant source of supply for worldwide steel production. A viable process that can economically recover iron from these oolitic iron ore deposits could become an important new technology to meet future demand in the steel industry. Hatch and Ironstone have demonstrated that oolitic iron ores can be exploited to produce direct reduced iron (DRI). Direct reduction ironmaking is a method for producing solid metallic iron using different techniques compared to the blast furnace process, which is the more conventional ironmaking route. The demand for the construction of direct reduction ironmaking plants has increased in response to the increasing demand for crude steel. It is viewed as a method of providing low-residual iron sources to scrap-based steelmaking in electric arc furnaces."

Syria has about 500 million ton deposit of minerals having 34 per cent iron content with alumina and silica as major impurities. Efforts were made to see the feasibility of concentration by four different methods involving washing, high intensity magnetic separation, reduction roasting and magnetic separation and acid leaching technique. It was observed that the reduction roasting with magnetic separation yields a concentrate with high iron (62.3 per cent) content without requiring water which is a scarce raw material in the region. The paper concludes that the detailed study may be made following this route to optimise the process Parameters.

NASA has received direction for lunar habitation beginning in 2024. Prior to then, it will be necessary to learn about how lunar soil can be used to promote civilization on the moon. Questions must be answered: ?Will it support plant life?,? ?Can it be used as a construction material?,? ?What is needed to maximize health and safety?,? and ?Will it affect equipment, tools, machinery, and clothes?? The only samples available for study came from the Apollo Missions. Because the expense of bringing more material back to Earth is prohibitive, there is not enough available to perform studies to answer the above questions. Hence, there is a great need for its synthesis. Most efforts to date have concentrated on making ?simulant? from single natural resources of volcanic rock. However, another possibility is to use resources here on Earth to extract the minerals of interest into concentrates or so-called ?separates? using traditional mineral processing techniques, and then mix the separates in appropriate ratios to simulate the lunar soil. In this paper, results from a study in which dry Road Norite outcrop and wet mill tailings from the Stillwater Mining Company?s Concentrator located near Nye, MT were examined. Of course, the in-side challenge is to make ?separates? from gangue minerals.

South Africa and Australia are the biggest suppliers of zircon sand to the international zirconium industry. However neither South Africa nor Australia is well known for zircon beneficiation. Geratech Zirconium Beneficiation Ltd (GZB) continued with additional research on sodium hydroxide (NaOH) cracking of zircon sand during 2002-2003. In 2003 GZB started extracting zirconium from zircon sand by means of NaOH cracking on a commercial scale. Experience has shown that temperature profile and atmospheric control inside the furnace is crucial for the beneficiation of zircon sand. Silica carryover to zirconium chemicals could result if a high temperature is used. Once the sodium silicate is extracted from the sodium zirconate and dissolved in hydrochloric acid, two distinct routes can be followed to precipitate various zirconium chemicals. The most common route is to precipitate zirconium oxychloride crystals (ZOC), with subsequent purification from all contaminants (crystal route). Less known is the process (liquid route) that involves the direct precipitation of zirconium basic sulphate (ZBS). This route will yield a less pure product, with contaminants such as silica and titanium. An important factor in this route is the prevention of silica gel formation, which could hamper final product filtration. For applications like paint drying (zirconium octoate) or antiperspirants (zirconium hydroxychloride) low levels of contaminants have no effect on the final product. The advantage of the liquid route is fewer production stages compared to the crystal route. The disadvantage of the liquid route is that the market for the products will be significantly smaller. The optimum solution could be a plant design that could cater for both routes. Another example of an application of zirconium chemicals is the use of ammonium zirconium carbonate (AZC) in the paper industry. Zirconium basic carbonate (ZBC) is dissolved in ammonium carbonate to produce AZC solution. AZC is used mainly in European countries in the paper industry. For example, carton boxes were initially produced with formaldehyde as the binder, however, it has now been replaced with AZC since formaldehyde is considered toxic. AZC reacts with the cellulose fibres in the paper to act as the binder. The resulting product is not toxic, and printing ink dries very quickly due to the porous paper structure. Other applications of zirconium chemicals involve the use of acid zirconium sulphate tetrahydrate (AZST), zirconium orthosulphate (ZOS), potassium zirconium carbonate (KZC), and zirconium hydrous oxide (ZHO). Fluoride-based zirconium chemicals like zirconium tetra-fluoride (ZrF4) and hexafluoro-zirconic acid (H2ZrF6) are used in the aluminium industry. Zirconium oxide (Zr02) can be produced from any of the abovementioned precipitated chemicals via a high-temperature decomposition process. The physical properties of such oxides can differ tremendously, depending on the final application. The fired density of sanitaryware is typically 5.8 g/cm3, compared to milling media at >6.1 g/cm3. The required fired density is achieved by controlling the precipitation and decomposition conditions for these two oxides. The same applies to stabilized and mixed oxides, for example where zirconium oxide acts as an oxygen carrier in fuel cells.

Dado que la simulación digital es una herramienta auxilar para los ingenieros de procesos -en tanto evalúa la factibilidad de un flowsheet propuesto y predice el efecto de una modificación para un flowsheet existente, su importancia también se extiende también a la evaluación de alternativas para las estrategias de control en los circuitos de la planta. En ese sentido, el presente trabajo señala los beneficios económicos y técnicos obtenidos en la planta San Rafael mediante el empleo de simuladores en los circuitos de molienda, chancado y concentración gravimétrica, los cuales permiten corroborar los cambios efectuados u optimizar los circuitos señalados de forma simple y rápida.
