Binders have been suggested as an aid for agglomeration to improve copper recovery in heap leaching operations. However, it has not been established if the use of binders would negatively affect the solvent extraction process, which is used to purify the pregnant leach solution from the heaps and remove any contaminants. Such negative effects would lead to an increase in processing costs or a decreased in copper production. The controlled studies reported here have shown that some binders (a polyacrylamide and a waste treatment additive) did not interfere with the solvent extraction process. Other binders (a polyvinyl acetate emulsion and tall oil pitch) negatively impacted copper solvent extraction and, therefore, should not be used in copper heap leaching plants.

The phenomenon of re-entrainment is seen in environments such as sand dune formation, soil erosion, fugitive dust emission and the spread of radionuclides from accidents involving nuclear weapons. A thorough review of existing literature reveals that work on re-entrainment of dust in mine atmospheres is scant. The present study was undertaken as a part of ongoing research at the Generic Mineral Technology Center on Respirable Dust at the Pennsylvania State University on the development of methods to predict ambient dust concentrations in mine atmospheres (Ramani, 1983). The contribution of re-entrainment to the spatial and temporal concentration of dust in mine airways is being studied. The research has included wind tunnel and in-mine studies. A set of seven experiments was performed under controlled conditions in the US Bureau of Mines' Lake Lynn Laboratory mine. Two types of source coal dust, anthracite and bituminous, were subjected to various airflow rates and were subjected to walking by two different individuals. Six sets of instruments were used along the test section for sampling airborne particles. The average air velocity just above the coal dust bed varied between 2.1 to 3.2 m/sec. Due to re-entrainment as a result of the airflow conditions, the average respirable dust concentration in the center of the mine airway increased to 0.09 mg/m3 (standard deviation = 0.03 mg/m3) from an initial value of 0.02 mg/m3. The concentration of all (total) airborne dust increased to 0.17 mg/m3 (standard deviation = 0. 10 mg/M3) from an initial value of 0. 02 mg/m3. The action of people walking, however, caused higher amounts of re-entrainment. The average concentration of respirable and total dust at the center of the mine airway increased to values of 0. 28 mg/m3 (standard deviation of 0.12 mg/m3) and 1.53 mg/m3 (standard deviation of 1.0 mg/m3), from initial values of 0.03 and 0.05 mg/m3, respectively. It was observed that the dust concentrations were much higher near the floor, immediately at the end of the coal-dust bed. Depending on the level of activity and the amount of dust deposited in the mine airways, re-entrainment may become an important source of airborne dust in areas away from the point of actual mining.

Cationic flotation of quartz is currently utilized in the concentration of iron ores and the cleaning of phosphate concentrates. The present work deals with depression of quartz in the presence of aluminum aqueous species during cationic flotation. It was established that aluminum species depress the flotation of quartz with an amine, especially under neutral and slightly alkaline conditions. With an amine as the collector, studies of the adsorption (abstraction) of Al species on quartz surfaces, as a function of pH, correlated well with the depression of this mineral. The presence of Al species also enhanced the depressant action of corn starch on quartz. In addition, the sodium salt of ethylenediaminotetraacetic (EDTA) was found to be an effective complexing agent to suppress the depression caused by aluminum ions.

Magnesium has poor ductility at temperatures lower than 225°C and, as a result, Mg alloy sheets are produced via fairly complex thermomechanical processes consisting of numerous sequential steps of hot (warm) rolling with low reduction and intermediate recrystallization annealing operations. In context of the present study, a simple technology for the fabrication of magnesium sheets by hot (warm) rolling was applied to various magnesium alloys. The misch metal addition in those AZ alloys was done to evaluate the deformation behavior. Tensile tests were carried out for those AZ alloys after applying different heat treatments. The precipitation of ß phase (Mg17Al12 phase) induced different microstructures with various cooling method from solution treatment temperature, and also with various annealing treatment temperatures.

Effect of Anionic Surfactant on Silica Particle Attachment at the Oil-Water Interface Controlling particle attachment is crucial where powdered solids come into contact with oil and water. Particles are trapped in a deep energy well at the oil-water interface, stabilising emulsions. Here it is shown that adding anionic surfactant causes dramatic changes to the bulk and interfacial structure of silica particle-stabilised oil-in-water emulsions. Exposing particle-stabilised drops to surfactant concentrations above the critical micelle concentration enhances the rate and extent of creaming and flocculation. Mixing particle-stabilised emulsions with surfactant solutions causes drop fragmentation. As the surfactant concentration increases, the average drop size decreases and particles are displaced from the interface during the mixing process.

IN PREVIOUS papers,1 the author has reported the results of experiments on the straining in tension of a single crystal test piece, about 0.6 in. long, of vacuum-melted electrolytic iron containing 1.8 per cent. of silicon. The crystal was originally in the "as cast" condition, and was stressed slowly along a tetragonal axis so that slipping along conjugate gliding planes finally transformed the original cylindrical portion into a pair of fracture wedges. One of these fracture wedges was sectioned along the stress axis in a plane at right angles to the edge of the wedge. A metallographic study of this plane of -section led to the conclusion that slip had taken place in the (111) direction along (112) planes making a V shape with the stress axis. The present paper describes the results of scratch-hardness tests conducted on the same section, in order to determine the distribution of strain hardness therein, followed by annealing, and considers the resulting variations in hardness. These observations supplement those made by Krivobok2 on similar material reduced 25 per cent. by hammering (i. e., by impact) in the cold. In order to investigate ageing effects, two small crystals of the same alloy were also tested.

THE brass-rolling industry has not had a great deal of experience with antimony in its product. There have been some recent excursions with antimony as a corrosion inhibitor in tubes, but in sheet brass it has been regarded with apprehension and generally avoided. This is not to say that [ ] contaminations have never occurred, and probably a great many brass mill men have had their own ideas on the effect of such contamination. Our own views were based upon certain experiences some years ago with strip castings that split lengthwise in the early stages of rolling. The nature of this splitting is shown in Fig. I, from a photograph taken in 1922 as a record of 20 bars of 65-35 common brass made with an antimonial brand of copper. These bars were cast 6 ¾ in. wide by 1 in. thick by 45 in. long. In the first pass through the rolls, 19 of the 20 split lengthwise throughout their length, while each half curved outward in a wide arc as it emerged from the rolls. [ ] In those days, if splitting was not a frequent occurrence, it was not unfamiliar. One can recall periods of short duration when large amounts of common brass would behave in this way. There was nothing imaginary about these spells. The affected metal would split lengthwise in the breaking rolls, and no maneuvering of mill practice made any difference. The condition would descend like a plague, demoralize the mill for several days, and disappear. It is doubtful if anyone knew the cause-however many explanations may have been current. IN previous publications1 it was shown that a scalar model of any weighty structure, where the stresses produced are mainly due to gravita-tional forces, will behave similarly to its prototype if the model and proto-type material are the same arid the model is placed in a centrifugal field of force (substituted for the gravitational field) which has been increased in the same proportion as the linear model scale is decreased. This principle is now being applied to a study of the behavior of mine structures in an attempt to determine the laws that control them. The importance of using models as a means of solving mining problems has been discussed previously, yet it may be well to reiterate here that this method of research and type of solution have been productive of far-reaching results in other engineering fields, notably those of hydraulics and aerodynamics. Model research is a comparatively cheap and time-saving method of checking practical experience. Up to the present time the best guide to what will happen underground has been the judgment of the man who has observed most and been longest acquainted with the local conditions. His experimental work underground is limited by the elements of cost, time and danger, while failure is seldom permissible. In a model, as in a test tube, all elements that affect the solution of a problem are under definite control. Each element may be varied independently at will and its effects noted. Experimental work on a small-scale model may there¬fore be performed at a comparatively small expenditure of time and money, instead of on a full scale in the mine, where the cost, time, and danger elements are necessarily great. The experiments described in this paper are to be considered as part of a progress report and a continuation of Technical Paper 425. One object of the research program is to make each experiment point the way for further research on that particular phase of the general problem. SINCE the development of dispersion-hardenable lead-antimony alloys1 in the laboratories of the Western Electric Co., Inc., studies have been made of the effect of various third constituents on these alloys.2 This paper covers a study of the effect of small amounts of arsenic. This element is important since it occurs as an impurity in many commercial antimonial leads and the results obtained are particularly interesting as indicating a class of addition agents which exert a stabilizing effect on dispersion-hardened alloys. EXPERIMENTAL In order to-study the effect ,of increasing amounts of arsenic, a series of alloys were made up containing 1 per cent. antimony, and arsenic varying from 0. to 0.10 per cent., the balance Doe Run lead (99.997 per FIG. 1..-CHANGE OF MICRO-BRINELL HARDNESS WITH TIME OF 1 PER CENT. This Research & Development (R&D) study was conducted in the field of applied blasting engineering in Ethiopia, within the AKH Railway Project, which was built in Girena, within the boundaries of the province of Mersa, in the Basalt Quarry at km 346, Ashangi Formation, occured in Eocene geological time in the aphanitic trachibasalt. Under the scope of the study, which has been performed to determine the effects of the artificial discontinuities at different depths and the effects of artificial discontinuities through structural damage risk, three test areas, at the same location and same formation, were considered. Six numbers of artificial discontinuities, each 10 m (32, 81 ft) transverse, were created by using pre-splitting and drilling-blasting technology. The number of sequential artificial discontinuities on each test area is two and they have the same length. The length of artificial discontinuities are; 6,80 m (22,31 ft) at the first test area, 13,60 m (44,62 ft) at the second test area and 17,00 m (55,77 ft) at the third test area respectively. The distance between sequential artificial discontinuities is 8 m (26,25ft) on each test area. Thirty-one shots were executed in order to produce vibration (10 shots on the first test area, 11 shots on the second area, 10 shots on the third test area). One hundred and twenty-three seismic recordings were obtained during the execution of the shots by using 4 seismographs. The closest distance between the shot points and the nearest measuring station is 5,30 m (17,39 ft). During the shots, the rock was cracked and there was no fragmentation and/or fly rock. At the first test area, measured PPV values are between 25,40-127,00 mm/s (1-5 inch/s) before the first artificial discontinuity and less than 50,80 mm/s (2 inch/s) after the second artificial discontinuity. At the second test area, measured PPV values are between 76,20-177,80 mm/s (3-7 inch/s) before the first artificial discontinuity and less than 76,20 mm/s (3 inch/s) after the second artificial discontinuity. At the third test area, measured PPV values are between 50,80-279,40 mm/s (2-11 inch/s) before the first artificial discontinuity and less than 50,80 mm/s (2 inch/s) after the second artificial discontinuity. Peak reduction rates in Peak Particle Velocity (PPV) values determined by measuring as follows: In the first test area 95,77% (106,00 mm/s to 4,48 mm/s) (4,17 in/s to 0,18 in/s), in the second test area 79,77% (176,00 mm/s to 35,60 mm/s) (6,93 in/s to 1,40 in/s), in the third test area 95,85% (from 205,00 mm/s to 8,55 mm/s) (from 8,07 in/s to 0,34 in/s). The arithmetic mean of the differences of PPV values (decrease rate) is 82,66% in the first test area, 69,37% in the second test area, and 92,03% in the third test area. The highest sound value is 138,50 dB and is defined as “noise”. When the measured parameter values are examined it was determined on the USBM norm graphs that these vibrations carry a risk of structural damage in the region before the first artificial discontinuity. While passing through artificial discontinuities the vibrations progress by losing energy and the vibrations passing through two artificial discontinuities do not carry structural damage risk under current conditions.

The selection of atmosphere composition is critical for controlling surface quality of reactive aluminum alloys during solution treatments. An improper selection of annealing atmosphere can result in surface blistering in AI-Mg and sub-surface depletion of lithium in AI-U ingots. To determine optimum atmosphere compositions for homogenizing A1-Mg and Al-Li alloys, Ii number of exploratory experiments were carried out in air, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide based atmospheres including reactive impurities or additive such as moisture and sulfur hexafluoride. This paper describes the influence of these atmospheres on high-temperature oxidation and sub-surface defects. The results are discussed in terms of the change in Pilling-Bedworth ratio.

"At the Sarcheshmeh copper mine 40,000 t of ore per day with an average grade of 0.9 % Cu is ground to 70% passing 75 microns. Grinding is effected in 8 parallel lines of 8 x 5 m ball mills in a closed circuit with cyclones. The make-up balls are 80-mm forged alloy steel balls and the average ball consumption is 750 gh of ore ground. In order to optimize ball size distribution inside the mill, based on the previous investigation instead of using only 80 mm make-up balls a combination of 80 and 60 mm (75% to 25% by weight) ball charge was used in one of the mills. To evaluate the performance of three ball types namely forged alloy steel balls (A), ductile cast iron (C), high chromium cast iron (D) and also a combined (80 and 60 mm) charge of forged alloy steel balls (B), four identical parallel mills were charged accordingly. These four mills were sampled during a period of six months. The amount of material finer than 75 microns of cyclone overflows was selected as a criterion for the performance evaluation. It was observed that in a mill with the combined make-up balls the amount of fine produced was 4% higher than the other mills. The consumption of ball types A, C and D were 730, 710 and 534 g/t, respectively. The results of laboratory flotation tests showed that due to an improvement in the production of fines an increase of 1.4% in the overall copper recovery is obtainable. Due to the promising results, the new make-up ball regime was implemented in all mills in the plant.INTRODUCTIONThe Sarcheshmeh copper ore body which may rank as third or fourth largest in the world contains 1 billion tonnes averaging 0.90 % copper and 0.03 % molybdenum. It is located southeast of Iran and has been processing 40,000 t/d of ore since 1982. The mine produces 100,000 tonnes of copper and 2,200 tonnes of molybednite concentrate per year. After three stages of crushing, the ore with a F80 of 12.7 mm is fed to 8 parallel ball mills in closed circuit with cyclones to produce a product 70% finer than 75 microns. The concentrate of the first stage of flotation is reground and the tailing constitutes the main component of the plant final tailings. A concentrate with an average grade of 31% Cu is obtained after cleaning and re-cleaning stages. Total recovery of the plant varies between 83 and 87 % depending on the operating conditions and ore type."

This study aimed to produce magnesium oxide (MgO) particles with different properties from dolomite ore using an experimental procedure comprising four stages: sample preparation (S1), HCl leaching (S2), precipitation (S3), and calcination (S4). Three different base sources (NaOH, KOH, and NH4OH) were used as precipitant in the third stage to obtain magnesium hydroxide [Mg(OH)2] from a leachate solution, which was obtained in the second stage. Next, Mg(OH)2 particles generated by different alkali sources were calcined at various temperatures from 600–1000 °C for different durations (1–5 h). The effect of these base types on the properties of each product was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and wet chemical analyses. The experimental results indicated that each product was identified as periclase (MgO) mineral, which was produced with a specific surface area (SSA) of 4.49–44.54 m2 /g depending on the production conditions. The surface roughness of the MgO particles increased with increasing calcination temperature. SEM analyses showed that MgO particles produced at a temperature of 600 or 800 °C were amorphous, indicating that the process was not influenced by the base type, but MgO crystals were smooth when the calcination temperature was 1000 °C. Finally, it was determined from all experimental findings that MgO particles produced via the addition of NaOH have superior properties (such as higher SSA and lower surface roughness) compared with MgO particles produced with KOH or NH4OH as the alkali source. These properties led to great improvement of its usability in industry.

The Mildred Lake Settling Basin (MLSB) is the largest disposal site for mature fine tailings (MFT) at the Syncrude Canada Ltd oil sands plant. Over the past years (since 1997), there has been a marked change in the consolidation behaviour of MFT in the MLSB, which is attributed to microbial activity. Methane-producing microorganisms, known as methanogens, have become very active, and large amounts of biogas (mainly methane) have been produced. In certain regions within the MLSB, gas bubbles are released to the water surface of the tailings pond. Continued field monitoring of the MLSB has provided convincing evidence of the rapid densification process (rapid water drainage from the tailings). This phenomenon contradicts the consolidation models for MFT developed over the past 20 years. The above phenomenon has also been reported at the oil sands tailings ponds operated by Suncor Energy Ltd. in Fort McMurray. This rapid densification has caused pumping challenges in the transfer of fine tailings from the Mildred Lake Settling Basin for the creation of composite tailings. The rapid densification of the MFT may also have potential positive effects in accelerating the reclamation of the oil sands fine tailings. A field and laboratory research program is underway to study the mechanism leading to the rapid densification phenomenon. Systematic field investigations were performed to determine the distribution and characteristics of the rapidly densified MFT. Gas bubble distribution on the water surface was mapped to determine the zones of different biological activities in the pond. These field investigations provided solid ground for further experimental and theoretical research. A number of small-scale column tests were carried out to observe the gas evolution and to measure the changes of some geotechnical parameters under different microbial activity. Also, a series of gassy MFT densification tests are being conducted to study the mechanism of the rapid densification of the MFT under microbiological activity. A review and discussion of the research program is given and some preliminary research results are presented in the paper.

This paper describes a field/laboratory study that was conducted in cooperation with a mine in Arizona. The primary purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of blasting energy on the crushability and grindability of the post-blast rock fragments. The crushability and grindability of the rock fragments were evaluated through laboratory comminution tests. A secondary purpose of the study was to investigate different laboratory methods for estimating the comminution properties of the rock fragments. In particular, a number of standard rock mechanics tests were conducted and compared with the comminution test results. Finally, the study was used to evaluate new technologies for estimating insitu rock mass strength and for assessing post-blast fragmentation. To estimate in-situ rock mass strength, the specific energy of drilling (SE) was calculated during blast hole drilling utilizing a continuous drill monitoring system. Post-blast fragmentation was estimated using the Split image processing system. Results from the study support the idea that increases in blast energy can enhance crushing and grinding. Also, several simple rock mechanics tests were found to correlate well with the results from standard comminution tests, which could prove to be useful in practice.

Bentonite clay is used as a binder for iron ore concentrate pelletization. Bentonites are sensitive to cations such as calcium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium that are known to be dissolved in the moisture remaining in the iron ore concentrate. These cations affect the ability of bentonite to absorb water, as measured by the plate water absorbance (PWA) test. This paper addresses the relationships between plant water chemistry and pellet strength for a wide PWA range of bentonites. Experiments were conducted to determine the effect of concentrate moisture solute chemistry and bentonite PWA value on the wet knock and wet and dry compressive strengths of iron ore pellets. Experiments used seven different types of bentonite that had PWA values ranging from 564 to 1033. Flushing plant concentrate with distilled water to remove the dissolved cations resulted in increased pellet strengths, to a widely varying degree, for each bentonite tested; wet knock values increased an average of 92% and dry compressive strength increased an average of 46%. In addition, pellet strengths were not found to be directly related to the ability of bentonite to absorb distilled water, measured by the PWA test.

The effects of water addition on the solid-state reaction between Cr2O3 and Na2CO3 at low temperatures (up to 873 K) were investigated to determine its possible influence on the reaction rate and the degree of conversion to soluble chromate. Experiments at high temperatures were conducted for comparison. It was found that adding water to the mixture before roasting enhanced both reaction rate and yield significantly. The reactions followed the Lesokhin-Tempelman equation at low temperature and the Ginstling-Brounshtein equation at above 973 K; the respective activation energies were 95 and 22 kJ/mol
