Park City Municipal Corporation (PCMC), long before being recognized as an Olympic venue was known as one of the great American silver mining towns. During a century of active mining, the Park City mining district produced millions of ounces of silver in addition to a substantial amount of mine tailing waste. Since 1985 the City has been remediating these impacts with state and federal oversight. One particular challenging CERCLIS site, that was previously a historic mine tailings pond is known as Prospector Square Development (CERCLIS Listing Silver Creek Tailings UTD98051404). This site has been very challenging due to the metals that impact the shallow ground water that eventually drain into the Silver Creek Watershed. To address the water quality impairment the City and Missouri University of Science and Technology teamed up to investigate the feasibility of constructing a horizontal-flow wetland to treat this pollutant source. This effort began with the building of a pilot cell in June of 2004 and lead to the construction of a full scale horizontal-flow wetland in the fall of 2008. The design of the pilot and full scale biocell was based upon lab-scale research conducted by the Missouri University of Science and Technology. In October of 2008, the Prospector Drain effluent was introduced to the system and to date analytical results reveal that the biocell is treating the Prospector Drain outfall below the Silver Creek Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) endpoint goals for zinc .39 mg/L and cadmium .00075 mg/L. The water chemistry of the influent, that originates from the historic silver mine tailings pond, is impaired with zinc and cadmium and has low iron with a pH of roughly 6.5. The construction of this unit encountered many challenges related to constituent relations, regulatory scrutiny, constructability and start-up. Nonetheless, since implementation this unit is considered a success for improving water quality within the Silver Creek Watershed.

As opposed to a prescriptive-based design, a performance-based fire-protection system design allows the system planner the flexibility in choosing specific method, materials and design tools to achieve a preset goal. A different approach in fire protection and a powerful addition to existing method, the system has been around for many years, and has gone through numerous improvements. Despite its popularity in the building industry, it has not been introduced to the mining industry yet. As mines get deeper, increases in size and complication, mine fire safety system will also become increasingly challenging, a new and proven system should be able to great potential to eradicate many of the problems that are either unsolvable or cost-prohibitive with the traditional method. With increasing globalization and international exchange with other major mining countries a common language/practice also make the performance-based design method a desirable feature in mine fire safety system. This paper will first define a performance-based system, step-by-step design methods, likely impacts on fire-protection practices and possible challenges in implementing the system in US underground mines.

This case history describes the foundation design and construction for the New Mississippi River Bridge, presently under construction in St. Louis, Missouri. The 1,500 ft (457.2 m) main span of the cable-stayed bridge is supported by two delta tower pylons in the river, with anchor piers on each bank. The final foundation design was completed as a part of an Alternate Technical Concept (ATC) proposal by the winning construction team, and utilized drilled shafts up to 11.5-ft (3.5-m) diameter that were socketed into very hard limestone. As part of the ATC foundation design, a full-scale, bi-directional static load test was performed to verify the design and allow use of higher resistance values. This paper presents the results of the site exploration, construction of the load test shaft, details of the load testing, and a comparison of the test results with various design parameters.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines began a five-year study of the 7.0 million acre Ketchikan Mining District during 1990. This study is part of the Bureau's ongoing statewide mining district evaluation program. The study area was subdivided and then prioritized by mineral potential into work units. Bureau field work in 1990 focused on the southern portion of Prince of Wales Island and vicinity. Extensive mineral resources have been mined historically in the area and are presently being evaluated by private industry. Information in this report is based on an extensive literature search and Bureau field work. Over 150 mines, prospects, and mineral occurrences were visited in 1990; an aggregate of 1,300 rock, placer, and limestone samples were taken; and nearly 3 miles of underground workings were mapped. Many prospects, some untouched for more than 80 years, were mapped and sampled. High metal values at several prospects were confirmed by Bureau sampling. Reconnaissance sampling along logging roads on Southern Prince of Wales Island revealed mineralized areas not previously recorded. Follow-up work at many locations is planned for the 1991 season.

The use of helical piles as a deep foundation option has considerably increased in the recent years to support a variety of loads, from small loads for several applications such as residential housing, solar farms, utilities and retrofit projects, to large loads for many applications such as commercial, power transmission lines, oil facilities and industrial applications. Therefore, it is necessary to qualify and quantify their axial capacities and performance characteristics. This paper presents the first full-scale axial compression and tension (uplift) testing program executed on large capacity helical piles installed in cohesionless soils. A total of eleven pile load tests using either single or double-helix piles with shaft diameters that varied between 324 mm to 508 mm (12¾ in to 20 in) were carried out, including seven axial compression tests and four tension (uplift) tests. The results of the axial compressive and tensile pile load tests as well as field monitoring data of helical piles installed in dense sand are presented in this paper. Based on the results of this study it was found that helical piles have developed significant resistance to axial compressive loads up to about 2920 kN (656 kips) and tensile loads up to 2900 kN (652 kips).

This paper describes the development of a life of mine schedule (LOM) for one of the world?s largest known sedimentary Copper-Cobalt districts located in the Katanga Province, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). A particular feature of the Tenke Fungurume LOM schedule is the considerable number of pits/phases for scheduling, each competing to provide the best ore available to a capacity constrained process facility. This paper discusses the main scheduling objectives and constraints, data pre-processing as a scheduling aid, the mine scheduling approach, and results and conclusions.

Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold (FCX) is committed to preserving and enhancing biodiversity in the areas in which we operate. As a member of the ICMM, FCX is committed to implement the 10 Sustainable Development (SD) Principles throughout our business. FCX is also a member of the Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC), a nonprofit coalition dedicated to protecting and enhancing wildl ife habitat. In alignment with ICMM SD Principle 7 and our Environmental Policy, FCX has set a performance goal to prepare a biodiversity inventory in 2010 and land management plan by end of 2011 for all active mining sites. In 2010 FCX established a Biodiversity Task Force to assist sites in biodiversity management; optimize use of resources around the globe; implement FCX goals and targets; and align biodiversity programs with ICMM principles and guidance. The task force consists of Environment and SD Department management, scientists and engineers from FCX sites, and WHC staff. The Task Force recently issued a biodiversity inventory guidance document to set expectations and provide consistency across the sites when developing a biodiversity inventory and land management plan.

3D seismic surveys have become a well-accepted method of imaging sub-surface geology in the Bushveld Basin. Because both the seismic sources and receivers are placed at surface, most surveys are limited to imaging faults with >=7 m throw. However, some areas such as shaft infrastructure can benefit from the ability to detect smaller structures prior to shaft sinking. Borehole radar and logs such as the acoustic televiewer can identify these structures in the shaft barrel, but not within -200 m from the shaft. Therefore, Anglo Platinum has developed the method of high-resolution 3D vertical seismic profiles (VSPs) for structural sterilization of shaft sites prior to shaft sinking. VSPs utilize a surface source and sub-surface receivers deployed down a borehole. This means that seismic energy goes through the near surface only once, and therefore suffers less frequency loss than when both source and receivers are on surface. Furthermore, VSPs can record 3 component (3C) data which comprises P wave, Sh (horizontal) and Sv (vertical) wavemodes. Because S waves travel at about 0.6 of the velocity of a P wave, shorter wavelengths and therefore higher resolutions are possible using S wave data. VSPs were first used in their one dimensional, zero offset, mode to correlate borehole geology with seismic stratigraphy within seismic surveys. This showed that VSPs record -30% higher frequencies than surface seismic surveys. The program then applied two dimensional VSPs to the problem of imaging geological structure close to a borehole. 2D VSPs confirmed that high frequency results could be achieved, and that this enabled a more accurate image of the Merensky Reef than could be achieved by surface seismic data. Finally, the program has achieved the successful recording and processing of 3D VSP data, with both compressional and shear wavemodes giving a high resolution structural result. Although P wave data gives -30% frequency improvement over surface seismic surveys, S wave data can give as much as 80% improvement, further improving the structural image achieved. The high fixed costs of VSP surveys mean that they should ideally be run in multi-client batches, which can reduce the per borehole cost by up to 50%. Their application is anticipated to be on high value capital infrastructure with a geological risk from faults which are not imaged by surface seismics-generally in the sub-7 m range. All ores have an economic optimum particle size (Wills and Napier-Munn, 2006). This optimum value is often a compromise between the need to achieve adequate liberation for the efficient separation and recovery of valuable minerals and the energy consumed by the crushing and grinding process. It has been recognized for nearly three decades that grinding is the most expensive and least efficient stage in mineral processing (El-shall and Somasundaran, 1984). At that time it was estimated that grinding consumed between 25 and 70% of the total power required in mineral processing. This recognition drove the development of new stirred mill fine grinding technology in the 1990s (Jankovic et.al, 2003; Enderle et. al., 1997; Massey, 2008). These milling technologies have a reduced energy consumption compared to traditional fine grinding using ball mills. In the ?coarser? fine grinding applications this improvement is approximately 30%. The benefits increase to above 50% in ultrafine grinding applications (Lichter and Davey, 2006). Despite these gains, the US Department of Energy reported that an additional energy savings of up to 37% is possible in the minerals industry. They identified continuing research and development and implementing best practices in both grinding and materials handling as the primary avenues for the additional reduction (BCS, 2007).

"PID loops – also known as base layers or regulatory controls – form the foundation of any plant’s control layer and it is generally accepted that PID loop health has a direct impact on the plant’s bottom line. Keeping these thousands of control loops in good health has a direct impact on the plant’s bottom line: it reduces variability, improves quality and throughput, and decreases energy costs and raw material usage. This has been well proven and documented in many articles. In the last ten years, technology has evolved: control engineers can now keep track of control loop performance and link it to the root causes of variability. However, they lack industry-wide best practices and criteria for determining what can be considered as excellent, good, fair, or poor performance. To ensure that PID control loops continue to perform well and meet their objectives, control engineers need a combination of (a) an appropriate monitoring technology and (b) best practices for doing the maintenance of base layer controls.Most plants have limited resources and operate with an increasing number of constraints; therefore, using the right tools and including reports in daily workflow is key for success. This paper suggests roles and responsibilities of key players needed to work toward control performance best practices and discuss organisational changes to succeed.INTRODUCTIONAlthough PID controllers are reliable workhorses in the process industry, they are often underrated. Since the 1980’s, computer control has evolved and the control algorithms used by control engineers have become increasingly complex. However, PID controllers still handle over 90% of the control loops in operating plants. Table 1 shows the savings that can be realized by achieving best-practice in several different process control categories (Brisk, 2004). The savings are expressed as a percentage of production costs."

Preliminary economic mining feasibility studies were conducted by the Bureau of Mines to estimate mining costs in the Juneau gold belt area of the Juneau Mining District, southeastern Alaska. Investigations were conducted on the economics of two mineral deposit types: (1.) Berners Bay vein gold deposits, and (2.) stockwork gold deposits containing gold, silver, and lead. Cost estimates were developed using the Bureau of Mines Cost Estimating System (CES). Discounted cash flow return on investment (DeFROI) was calculated using the Bureau's MINSIM computer program. Underground mining of a Berners Bay vein gold deposit was found to be economic (15 pct DCFROI) at a recoverable metal value of $353.67/mt for a 100 mtpd shrinkage stoping mine with a 10 yr mine life, $324.76/mt for a 20 yr mine life, $138.63/mt for a 500 mtpd longhole stoping mine with a 10 yr mine 1 ffe, and $127.50/mt for a 20 yr mine life. Block caving mining of a large stockwork gold deposit was found to be economic at a recoverable metal value of $15.28/mt for a 18,000 mtpd mine with a 20 yr mine life.

Until not so long ago most ring geared mills were operated with fix speed motors only. By using the latest generation of medium voltage frequency converters, new possibilities have arisen to improve the grinding process. Beside all the direct and indirect advantages, several dedicated functions have now been implemented for ring geared grinding mills in the minerals industry. The sophisticated operational functions ensure a smooth, safe and reliable operation with minimum stress for the mechanical equipment and therefore utmost availability of the mill. Several papers have already been presented concerning the benefits of using this state of the art technology for mill drives. Now this paper is focusing on the experiences gained with this kind of sophisticated ring geared mill drive system rather than only show and explains the operational benefit of the different functions. Several measurements of different operating conditions, starting, frozen charge remover, controlled roll back, backlash, etc., made on an installed and commissioned 2 x 5 MW dual pinion ring geared mill drive system will be shown and discussed. The accuracy of the load sharing between the two 5 MW motors during starting, normal operation and stopping will be demonstrated using real measurements from an operating system. Finally the inherent features of these drive systems are briefly discussed.

A chlorination pilot plant having capacity to produce 5?10 kg/hr of titanium tetrachloride is in operation at the chlorination facility in Mintek. The bubbling fluid bed chlorination plant can be operated in batch and/or continuous process to study the chlorination kinetics of various feedstocks. The chlorination of titaniferrous ores to produce titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) was carried out during the commissioning of the pilot plant and also as part of the titanium programme carried out at Mintek. TiCl4 is a basic raw material for producing commercial titanium dioxide pigment and titanium metal. This paper discusses the challenges faced during the commissioning and operation of the chlorination pilot plant. It also discusses the effect on the auxiliary facilities and instrumentation as a result of the harsh operating conditions of +1000°C and use of corrosive gases like chlorine and titanium tetrachloride. It discusses the effect of physico-chemical properties of the titanium tetrachloride and iron chlorides. The effect on the chlorinator refractory lining due to heating and cooling of the chlorinator is also discussed. Besides the special provisions made during the design of the chlorinator, this paper also discusses the operational experience and possible solutions to be implemented in future. Driven pipe piles are commonly used for near and offshore structures due to their omni-directional bending resistance, large surface area, and ease of installation. However, these piles typically cannot be driven deep enough to develop significant and sustained uplift capacity, and in some cases do not generate enough end-bearing resistance before being overstressed during driving. When driven closed-ended, their relatively light weight to cross-sectional ratio, and when driven open-ended their tendency to prematurely plug, are some installation short comings. Spin Fin® piles are traditional pipe piles fitted with flat, steel plates (?fins?) attached at a slight angle over the lower few feet of the pipe. Their design development dates back several decades for projects associated with harsh, limited weather window, offshore Alaskan oil field work. These projects required a pile type that could generate high and sustained capacity in both compression and tension, at relatively shallow depth. During pile driving, a relatively short, high capacity pile translates into more rapid installations with smaller and more efficient equipment. In this type of environment, where pile capacities are large, cyclic loading is typical, and relatively high pile movement is tolerable, the Spin Fin® pile is a superior solution. This paper describes the experience of using Spin Fin® piles on several recently completed Massachusetts Steam Ship Authority projects.

Keywords: Submerged-arc furnace, plasma furnace, d.c. furnace, scale up, Søderberg electrodes, smart grid, demand side management, load shedding This paper argues that the scale up of furnaces and the supply of electricity are going to be two major issues that will affect the ferro-alloy industry in the near future, and that economic factors will drive this development. The most common type of furnace for producing ferro-alloys at present is the submerged-arc furnace with three electrodes, fed from a three-phase a.c. electrical supply. The scale up of this technology has now reached a fundamental constraint, which is caused by the electrical reactance of the secondary circuit. If the economy of any further scale up is to be achieved in the future then a different technology will have to be used. The supply of electrical power in future is likely to become a more complex issue than it is at present. Existing submerged-arc furnaces tend to run at fairly steady loads, but the ability to swing the load under demand-side management may offer advantages, and may allow a furnace to get cheaper power from the organisations that supply this power. This will have to be counterbalanced against the nuisance factors incurred by having a varying load in the operation of the furnace. Various options are therefore discussed in this paper. The possibility of scale up of Søderberg electrodes is discussed, as well as the use of d.c. power and multiple electrodes. Some of the issues with load swinging are also examined. A particular scenario is also briefly presented to show that considerable further scale up of ferro-alloy furnaces is still possible.

Waste rock facilities (WRF) generally have a large footprint depending on the strip ratio the mine plan provides. Considerable planning is involved during the initial phase of the mine plan regarding the location of the WRF. As the mining operations are commenced the locations of the WRF change accordingly with the variations in the mine plan involving feedback and support from local communities and stakeholders. Waste rock facilities management becomes challenging when the area available for placement is limited due to terrain topography, environmental and permitting constraints. Risks associated in the design of waste rock facilities constitute particle size of rock, chemistry associated with the rock for reactivity and stability of the over all facility. This paper will provide some insights on designing, scheduling and managing a WRF. Emphasis on geotechnical, geophysics and geochemistry aspects of waste rock with reference to design, construction process and scheduling of WRF are also presented. Design improvements in the reclamation slope of WRF for erosion control will be discussed. Continuous improvement (CI) methodology will be introduced in the process of WRF operations. Current practices and future recommendations towards sustainability and consistency in operating WRF will be discussed in conclusion.

Results of the two main drilling operations on hydrothermal fields demonstrate that the two dimensional submersible operations need to be followed by drilling expeditions to study the third dimension of hydrothermal systems and understand hydrothermal and ore forming processes. Two types of environments were drilled recently in basaltic environment on slow spreading ridge, and on a sedimented ridge. Similar work has still to be done and targets to be discussed in other environments such as back-arc basins for felsic rocks environments and slow spreading ridges for ultramafic rock environments.

Sufco coal mine, a subsidiary of Arch Western Bituminous Group, recently purchased a reverse osmosis (RO) system. The systems intent was to remove impurities in the water being mixed with the hydraulic oil to maintain the viability of critical longwall hydraulic systems and to prevent degradation. This project not only ensured hydraulic components from corrosion, but also revealed a cost savings by reducing the percentage of hydraulic oil mixed with the RO water. SUFCO WATER TREATMENT HISTORY Sufco coal mine has been in operation for approximately 70 years. Old works extend up to 15 miles one way, not including adjacent mined out longwall panels. Due to the geologic conditions and strata, water treatment has been as simple as putting water in at a high point of a mined out area and recovering it at a low point to discharge. Doing this reduces the total suspended solids (TSS) to less than 25 parts per million (ppm) and the total dissolved solids (TDS) less than 1,200 ppm which complies with Sufco?s water discharge permit. Even though the requirements for the permit were met, the water is still corrosive in nature. A portion of this water is piped back into the fireline (makeup) water system. It is then boosted to pressures of up to 500 psi to support mining sections, belt systems, equipment, fire fighting systems and the longwall.

Most management decisions at all levels of the organization are as directly or indirectly depends on the circumstance of future. With regard to predict the future events in the process of decision-making plays a main role, therefore, forecasting is very important for every organizations and institutions. There is a variety of methods to predict time series. In general, these techniques can be divided as following: statistical, artificial intelligence and analytical techniques. Two of the most common methods for time series prediction is autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) and artificial neural network (ANN) methods, these methods are the subset of statistical and artificial intelligence techniques respectively. In this paper, a hybrid model of ARIMA and ANN models are employed to predict the number of fatal injuries in the USA underground coal mines. This research showed the result of hybrid model is better than split model.

This paper gives an overview of the difficulties associated with determining the strength of hard-rock pillars. Although a number of pillar design tools are available, pillar collapses still occur. Recent examples of large-scale pillar collapses in South Africa suggest that these were caused by weak partings that traversed the pillars. Currently two different methods are used to determine the strength of pillars, namely, empirical equations derived from back analyses of failed and stable cases, and numerical modelling tools using appropriate failure criteria. The paper illustrates that both techniques have their limitations and additional work is required to obtain a better understanding of pillar strength. Empirical methods based on observations of pillar behaviour in a given geotechnical setting are popular and easy to use, but care should be exercised that the results are not inappropriately extrapolated beyond the environment in which they are established. An example is the Hedley and Grant formula (derived for the Canadian uranium mines), which has been used for many years in the South African platinum and chrome mines (albeit with some adaptation of the K-value). Very few collapses have been reported in South Africa for layouts designed using this formula, suggesting that in some cases it might yield estimates of pillar strength that are too conservative. As an alternative, some engineers strongly advocate the use of numerical techniques to determine pillar strength. A close examination unfortunately reveals that these techniques also rely on many assumptions. An area where numerical modelling is invaluable, however, is in determining pillar stresses accurately and for studying specific pillar failure mechanisms, such as the influence of weak partings on pillar strength. In conclusion, it appears that neither empirical techniques nor numerical modelling can be used solely to provide a solid basis for conducting pillar design. It is therefore recommended that both these techniques should be utilized to obtain the best possible insight into a given design problem. Owing to the uncertainties regarding pillar strength and loading stiffness, monitoring in trial mining sections and in established mining areas is also an essential tool to test the stability of pillar layouts in particular geotechnical areas.
