"The casthouse floor has always been one of the most dangerous working places on a blast furnace or a ferro-alloy/nonferrous furnace. Apart from working in an atmosphere including toxic gases, fumes, and dust, the workers have to perform hard and heavy manual work close to runners and ladles filled with hot liquid metal and slag.Before the invention and installation of tapping equipment the tap-holes were opened and closed manually. Opening was done by means of steel bars and sledgehammers, whereas the tap-hole was closed by repeatedly ramming small amounts of clay or refractory material into the tap-hole, again with the help of long, heavy bars. In addition, on blast furnaces the blast had to be stopped, since it was impossible to close the tap-hole properly against the blast furnace pressure. This stoppage of the blast resulted in regular losses of production. Around 1900 a major change in technology occurred. Samuel W. Vaughen, superintendent of the blast furnace department of the Cambria Iron company at Johnstown, Pennsylvania (USA), invented the first clay gun in 1895 (Wiley, 1896) (Figure 1)."

The Institute has established this lectureship to honor the memory of a great American metallurgist, one whose fame has continued long after his passing. As one scientist recently stated it, "All metallurgical texts gradually become outdated and outmoded, except those of the great Henry Marion Howe." It seems fitting, then, that, once every year, we shouId review, in his honor, some aspects of the science in which he was such a distinguished leader, and also discuss any new data that may help to clarify our concepts. It is my privilege, for which indeed I express the deepest appreciation to this Institute, to offer for consideration a few thoughts on the toughness and fracture of hardened steels. Before proceeding to the data, I wish to express my great indebtedness to many associates whose stimulating discussions, generous contributions of data and cooperation in experiments are gratefully acknowledged. (But I wish to absolve them of any blame that may arise from the way in which their discussions and data have been used!) First, Dr. Edgar C. Bain, Vice President, Carnegie-Illinois Steel Corporation, whose amiable but merciless criticisms and always constructive and thoughtful suggestions help unfailingly to guard against pitfalls. It was found that, when ferrite was precipitated in the (prior austenite) grain boundaries of hardened steel, the notch-bar toughness was much less than in pieces fully hardened. Anticipating the need for convenient, economical, and safe means for disposing of combustible wastes contaminated with low-level activity, in connection with private and institutional uses of radioisotopes, the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) has provided the Bureau of Mines with funds to develop an incinerator for this purpose. A prototype incinerator, designated hereafter as BOMAEC-30, was designed, constructed, and tested, based on fundamental and applied research investigations of the combustion characteristics of rubbish and sawdust, which will comprise the bulk of contaminated wastes. No radioisotopes were used in the tests; the objective was to remove as much particulate matter from the products of combustion as possible. The prototype unit was designed to burn 30 pounds per hour, using 100 percent over fire air admitted tangentially in an all-metal, cylindrical combustion chamber. The gas-cleaning system consisted of special fabric bags and absolute filters.

Based on thermodynamics of surfaces and a proposed two-dimensional state equation for surfaces, the relationship between the surface tension (Y) of a solution and the activity (a1) of its component (i) was derived: (1/Y)r2-.¬E (ai/Yl) The derived equation was verified with reported experimental data of water-alcohol systems and water-acetone system, the calculated results showed astonishing coincidence with experimental. Applications of the equation to the five matte systems Cu2S-FeS, Ni3S2-FeS, FeS-PbS, Cu2S-PbS and FeS-Cu22S-PbS also demonstrated that at given matte compositions the calculated surface tensions agreed with experimental fairy well.

This report describes an in situ combustion project and three waterflood projects in Allen, Anderson, and Wilson Counties, Kansas, that will be visited during the 1964 annual tour of the Kansas-Oklahoma Waterflood Association. Among the unique features of the projects are the movement of heavy crude oil through the reservoir and into the wellbore with energy furnished by burning a portion of the crude oil therein. Another feature is the simultaneous injection of C02 and water, through separate tubing into input wells during early development, to increase injectivity at moderate pressures, Discussion of individual projects includes information on their early history, source and treatment of injection fluids, oil production-decline curves, and the results of water injection on oil production.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report identifies the types of serious accidents that occur most frequently at small underground coal mines and describes the strategies that could help prevent these accidents. A wide variety of methods for improving safety are suggested, including improvements in the design of equipment, work procedures, work schedules, safety programs, and emergency response plans, as well as techniques for diagnosing the potential hazards associated with new technologies and work procedures. Some of the papers in this volume focus on preventing specific types of mining accidents--ones associated with materials handling (primarily back injuries), equipment maintenance, improper machine guarding, and ground failure during retreat mining. Although the recommendations in this volume are heavily influenced by research performed at underground coal mines in the Appalachian coalfields, most of the papers contain advice that is equally pertinent to almost any type of mine.

Due to the time consuming nature of froth testing in a laboratory environment, it is required, due to practical limitations, to develop a method of applying a single set of performance test data (Visintainer & Whitlock, 2012) obtained for a single froth pump at a given speed, to a range of froth pump speeds and sizes, % air contents, and liquid viscosities. Head, efficiency, and flow all vary as functions of both liquid viscosity and air content. As such, it is necessary to develop a technique which can be used to interpolate from existing test data in order to predict froth pump performance for pumps of various sizes running at variable speeds. Details of the technique developed in order to achieve this goal as well as the insights gained from analysis of the resulting regressions are discussed. Additionally, comparisons are made between the performance predictions of this test-derived method and those of the Hydraulic Institute Standard for the effects of liquid viscosity on centrifugal pump performance (ANSI/HI 9.6.7-2010).

The vapor pressures of FeCL2 and ZnCL2 in the FeCL2?ZnCL2 system were measured by the transpiration method at 873K and 9I7K, The vapor pressure data were interpreted to indicate the formation of complex ions in the FeCL2?ZnCL2 melts, It is presumed that the complex molecule FeZnCl4 as well as FeCL2 and ZnCL2 exists in the vapors in equilibrium with molten FeCL2-ZnCL2 mixtures, The activities in the FeCL2-ZnCL2 system are shown a negative deviation from Raoult's law. These results suggest the formation of complex ions such as ZnCL14 in molten FeCI2?ZnCL2 mixtures.

"INTRODUCTION The Yancey-Crawford tract, located 1-1/2 nines east of Yancey station on the Norfolk & Western Railway in Rockingham County, Va. was from 1917 to 1941 considered an unusually promising manganese prospect. Because of the favorable geologic formations and because of the common occurrence of manganese in the district and Virginia's large production of these minerals from this area, geological report 3/ have listed this tract as the No. 1 prospect in the State. During World War I, extensive geologic studies were made to locate manganese deposits similar to those exploited at the Crimera mine near Waynesboro to alleviate this mineral shortage during the existing emergency.In September 1941 the Bureau of Mines started exploratory drilling on the tract in an effort to discover and block out reserves of manganese minerals as authorized by the 76th Congress under the Strategic Materials Act. After five drill holes wore sunk, the project was terminated October 1941."

The importance of semikilled steel as a high tonnage grade has long been recognized. The increasing severity of the applications for which semikilled steel is used makes it desirable to obtain further information regarding the features of open hearth practice and ingot structure that can affect steel performance in subsequent rolling and fabricating operations. Accordingly, an investigation is being carried out studying the structure of various types of semikilled steel ingots. This paper reviews some of the observations made and information gathered in this investigation. By definition, semikilled steel may be considered to include all nonrimming steels in which the natural shrinkage occurring during ingot solidification is offset to an appreciable degree by gas formation. Accordingly, this type of steel includes the entire range intermediate between rimmed and fully killed steel. The resultant ingot structures range from those of steels that have been capped to suppress a weak rimming action to those steels that have been killed in the furnace or ladle to the extent that no mold deoxidizer is required. A survey reported to the 1946 -AIME Open Hearth Conference' reviewed the practices being used at 28 major plants for the deoxidation of semikilled steel. It was found that most plants divide the deoxidizing additions between the ladle and the mold—many of the plants adding only minor amounts of deoxidizer to the bath or none at all. Silicon, aluminum and titanium were the only elements used for ladle and mold deoxidation. Mold deoxidizers were added as capping additions or as uniformly fed additions. Several practices were reported in which the steel was deoxidized in the ladle to the extent that little or no mold deoxidation was needed. No reference was made to grades capped by using special mold designs or special closures over the top of molds. .Accordingly, specific examples of this type of practice will not be considered in this paper. It appeared from this survey of deoxidation practice that semikilled steel can be divided into three types, namely, capped semikilled, in which aluminum is added near the end of pour or after shut-off, intermediate semikilled steels, in which aluminum is fed uniformly throughout the pour, and semikilled steels requiring no mold deoxidation. In an attempt to cover the ingot structures obtained by the range of practices reported in the preceding survey, three series of experimental heats were made using increasing amounts of aluminum, silicon and titanium for ladle deoxidizers. The ladle deoxidizers were added as stick aluminum, 50 pct ferrosilicon and 20 pct ferrotitanium (4 pct carbon), respectively. Two methods of studying ingot structures were used. Ingots were removed from production, burned longitudinally and machined to allow observation of the central pipe and coarse blowholes. Within the past few years a number of the larger mining enterprises have introduced similar systems and there is growing interest in the subject. This will be stimulated by the final report of the President's Second Industrial Conference, in which the following statement occurs:""The conference finds that joint organization of management and employees where undertaken with sincerity and good will has a record of success. The general principles governing such organizations are stated at length under the title 'Employee Representation. It is not a field for legislation, because the form which employee representation should take may vary in every plant. The conference, therefore, does not direct this recommendation to legislators but to managers and employees.""If the joint organization of management and employees in the plant or industry fails to reach a collective agreement, or if without such joint organization, disputes arise which are not settled by existing agencies, then the conference proposes a system of settlement close at hand and under Government encouragement, and a minimum of regulation. The entrance of the Government into these problems should be to stimulate further cooperation."""

The effects of slag composition, additive agents, and heat treatment conditions on the perovskite (CaO ? TiO2) crystal morphology, the precipitation behavior, the crystal growth and the volume fraction (VF) in the Ti-bearing blast furnace slags were investigated. The morphology of perovskite is dispersed dendriform in molten slags. The crystal growth mechanism of the remelting of fine dendrites and the coarsening of larger grains exists throughout the solidification of molten slags. With the temperature decrease, the VF was increased and Perovskite transformed from fine dendrites to coarsening ones or equiaxed grains. The lower cooling rate can increase the VF and coarsen the grain obviously, while higher cooling rate will decrease the VF and reduce the average equivalent diameter (AED) of Perovskite. When .increasing the content of CaO and Fe20}, the VF can increase obviosly. However, high basicity will give rise to the increasing of viscosity of slag, which result in the reducing of the AED. The experimental results showed that additive CaF2 and MnO can efficiently decreased the viscosity of the slags, and obviously improved the morphology of perovskite and promote growth.

"Evaporites abound in the Western Canada sedimentary basin, recurring throughout the stratigraphic column and widely scattered over the basin region. Alberta, situated centrally over the basin, includes many of the evaporites within its borders, but only a few have the right geological conditions to form potential economic deposits of salt or gypsum. These include the Middle Devonian Elk Point Group and related evaporites, Upper Devonian Wabamun Group-Palliser Formation evaporites, and evaporites of the 'Triassic Charlie Lake and Whitehorse formations.Salt deposits underlie almost half of Alberta. The major deposits belong to the Elk Point Group, which includes thick salt units in the Lotsberg, Cold Lake and Prairie Evaporite formations. Another, younger salt deposit in the Wabamun Group has only local distribution. Elk Point salts have a maximum aggregate thickness of 430 m in east-central Alberta. The deposits deepen southwestward across the province, from minimum depths of210 m at Fort McMurray to 1820 m at Edmonton.The thickest, most extensive salt deposits are the upper Lotsberg and Prairie Evaporite salts. Both have excellent development potential. The upper Lotsberg is up to 150 m thick, consists of clear, very coarse crystalline halite with only minor impurities, and has a notable lack of non-salt strata in its succession. Analytical data for the Lotsberg Salt show extraordinary chemical purity. Prairie Evaporite Salt differs lithologically from the Lotsberg in having a significant non-salt component. The deposit is up to 200 m thick and consists of medium crystalline halite, brownish coloured and cloudy as a result of finely dispersed impurities. The main impurities-shale, anhydrite and dolomite-are most prevalent as interbeds in the salt succession, ranging from very thin laminae to beds several metres thick. Although of lesser purity, the Prairie Evaporite Salt is shallower, thicker and more extensive than the Lotsberg and the salt quality is quite acceptable for most industrial uses."

"The purpose of this study was to develop a theoretical and technology framework for designing new combined technologies for processing tailings containing non-ferrous and noble metals using dry separation. The main goals of the study were: identifying the distribution patterns of valuable components in various fractions in dry separation processes; examining the patterns identified for different types of non-ferrous and noble metal tailings; developing a theoretical and technology foundation for the development of innovative technologies for the efficient processing of tailings with minimal process water consumption. To examine the possibility of efficient recovery of valuable components from refractory tailings using dry separation, an experimental laboratory unit was designed and built, composed of novel or modified lab equipment: plasma unit for increasing the magnetic susceptibility of Fe - containing minerals; magnetic separator supporting isodynamic and polygradient fields; pneumatic separator for the dry separation of finely dispersed mineral mixtures; dielectric separator using the resonant frequency of the electric field. The laboratory unit supports various modifications and combinations of the lab equipment. The experimental studies led to the development of a unified process scheme for lab tests of mature and non-ferrous smelter tailings using dry separation methods.INTRODUCTION The huge amount of waste from mining and processing of mineral resources Russia inherited from the extensive use of mineral resources in the Soviet Union and amount of waste continue to grow. Often the content of valuable non - ferrous, rare and noble metals in waste exceeds the balance contents in natural ores of the developed deposits. The availability of a rich scientific reserve for the creation highly effective innovative technologies for waste processing determines the necessity of the acceleration in the resolution of problems of the complex assessment, capitalization and involvement in the processing of technogenic resources in Russia (Chanturiya and Kozlov, 2014.)."

La voladura de rocas es una de las operaciones más relevantes dentro del proceso extractivo de minerales, cuyo objetivo es lograr un tamaño adecuado de roca, con un mínimo de daño en su entorno. Sin embargo, los resultados han sido adversos, incrementando los costos de operación. Por ello, el presente texto describe una metodología que basada en la exactitud del diseño de tiempos, optimiza los resultados de fragmentación en la mina Toquepala. Asímismo, incorpora la tecnología en su evaluación y desarrolla herramientas técnicas a objeto que permitan predecir el comportamiento de las variables que inciden en el desarrollo de las voladuras.

Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Spokane Research Laboratory, studied technology and methods that could reduce accidents involving surface mining equipment that collides with other vehicles or workers, or drives over an unseen road edge. These accidents are partially attributed to the lack of full visibility around these large pieces of equipment. Blind areas can be extensive and this report presents plots of blind areas for five pieces of surface mining equipment. Several technologies designed for detecting obstacles in blind areas and providing a warning to the operator were evaluated on off-highway dump trucks. These proximity warning systems included radar, sonar, GPS, radio transceiver tags, and combinations of radar and cameras. A summary of test results is presented in this report, along with guidance on effective proximity warning technology, installation and maintenance considerations, and recommendations for effective implementation. This study found several commercially available systems that could effectively warn an equipment operator of an impending collision. Several new technologies also show promise for reducing these accidents. In most applications, it is recommended that sensor-based systems be combined with video cameras to provide important alarming functions along with an actual view of the blind area.
