Magmatic-related low sulphidation hydrothermal ore systems at plate margins exhibit distinct spatial and temporal zonations which can be used to aid mineral exploration and development. Low sulphidation systems at all crustal levels exhibit the same paragenetic sequence of events: early breccia formation, followed by quartz - secondary feldspar - sericite/illite veining, then mineralisation, and final argillic overprint. This sequence of events is interpreted to reflect the initial emplacement of melts at high crustal levels, and the progressive cooling of that melt and release of magmatic constituents into a circulating hydrothermal system.

Roof conditions at Southern Colliery, the second longwall mine to be established at German Creek, were found to be much stronger and more massive than at the earlier longwall mine on the lease. Investigations were made to ascertain the level of face support required for longwall extraction under the changed geological conditions. Geotechnical information was provided from drillholes and highwall exposures. Downhole geophysical logs, notably the sonic velocity log, were used to obtain a distribution of the major lithological units over the mine area. A representative type section of the strata and geomechanical properties was compiled to form the basis for numerical modelling. Two-dimensional finite element methods were used to predict strata movements and chock loads under cantilevered roof conditions. The model incorporated a 6.3 in thick roof beam either bonded or detached, with either a 2 in or 5 in overhang. The solid rib, immediate roof, chock support and goaf were modelled as distinct parts, in addition a front abutment stress profile, derived from three-dimensional displacement-discontinuity analysis, was superimposed on the model.

A Feasibility Study to determine the future of ZC Mines was completed in mid 1987. Early in this study, which lasted two years, it was identified that significant reductions in treatment costs would result if the Zinc Corporation Concentrator was closed. All of the production from the existing two mines, The Zinc Corporation Limited (ZC) and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited (NBHC), would then be treated in the concentrator at NBHC.After a partial upgrade of the NBHC concentrator, the ZC concentrator was finally closed and all of the equipment disposed of. This closure highlighted the need to concentrate all ore haulage in one shaft to further reduce operating costs and remove the cost of surface transport of ZC production to the improved NBHC concentrator. This paper outlines the changes that were made to improve the haulage system for ZC Mines. After a number of options were investigated, it was finally decided that the upgrade of the existing NBHC haulage shaft was the best option even though some production would be lost while the upgrade was in progress.

Quaternary warping and uplift of antiformal schist ranges in Central Otago, New Zealand, has resulted in recycling of alluvial gold from widespread, generally weakly auriferous, Miocene fluvial gravels that unconformably overlie the schist, into aprons of fan sediments along the range margins. Basement erosion during uplift has been limited and so gold input from sparse gold-bearing quartz veins in the schist has been relatively minor. In an eluvial cycle on the slopes of the ranges, chemical remobilization of gold occurs during oxidation and erosion of the Miocene sediments. The typically fine-grained (300-400¦m) gold undergoes chemical modification and grain size enhancement of up to two orders of magnitude, and much of it is redeposited in a large number of relatively small alluvial fans along the range margins. Groundwater mobility within the fans results in minor additional gold mobility and grain size Enhancement.

"The oxidative dissolution of copper from refractory minerals, such as chalcopynte, represents a technological challenge that has occupied hydrometallurgists for more than half a century. Innumerable processes have been suggested, but the majority operates at high temperatures or employs corrosive media. The origin of this refractory nature is the formation of passivating phases of iron(III) or copper. One option is to add non-corrosive ligands that complex these metal ions, thereby facilitating their dissolution. In the present work, the effect of acetone in sulfuric acid solutions was studied. The initial experiments were on chalcopynte carbon paste electrodes using cyclic voltammetry, where greater reactivity was observed. Later, leaching tests with hydrogen peroxide, cupric sulfate and ozone and, as oxidants, were performed. High extractions were achieved in three hours at 50°C. The solid residues contained the iron in the form of Fe203 and FeOOH.IntroductionChalcopyrite is the most important mineral of polysulfide copper ores [1] and accounts for approximately 70% of the world's copper reserves [2]. Currently, the copper present in chalcopyrite is extracted mainly by pyrometallurgical processes, which generate environmental concerns because of the formation of SO2 gas and submicron particulates [3]. The development of a less aggressive hydrometallurgical process for the extraction of copper would constitute a possible solution to these problems. For that reason, studies of the dissolution behavior of chalcopyrite are of great technological importance [4], However, the proposed oxidative leaching routes for chalcopyrite, generally at high pressures and temperatures, have not been implemented on an industrial scale, because of the elevated costs required to equal the high copper extractions obtained in thermal processes. These extreme leaching conditions are required because of the refractory nature of chalcopyrite. Passivation has been used to explain this phenomenon, although researchers have disagreed on the composition of the layer, which is various have assumed to be sulfur, copper sulfides, and iron-bearing jarosites or hydroxides [5]. If the latter compounds are the cause, an alternative solution would be the use of polar organic solvents in the oxidative leach to decrease the formation of the passivating iron layer. In this work, the influence of acetone on the oxidative leaching of a chalcopyrite concentrate at room conditions is explored."

"Spent potlining is unavoidable solid waste from aluminum smelters. About thirty kilograms spent potlining is discharged in China to produce per ton primary aluminum. Spent potlining has high level soluble fluorides and cyanides so that it brings heavy pollution to environment. It is prohibited to keep a large amount of spent potlining in open air because it will lead concentrated pollution to local soil and water source due to hydrated reactions between spent potlining and rain water/moisture in air. Landfill may solve pollution of spent potlining provisionally, but it is difficult to be accepted by aluminum smelters because of its high investment, troublesome monitoring and perennial maintenance. Detoxifying of spent potlining not only can remove deleterious fluorides and cyanides in SPL, but also can make fluorides in SPL recycle and return to aluminum electrolysis cells, at the same time benign SPL solid residue can be recycled and ready for cement production.IntroductionChina became the largest primary aluminum manufacturer in 2001. In the past few years, its aluminum output increased by twentyfive percent every year and reached 12.56 million metric tons in 2007. The whole world was very surprised and focused attention upon Chinese aluminum industry. Main Solid wastes from aluminum industry are red mud from alumina refineries and spent potlining (short as SPL) from aluminum smelters. Spent potlining are waste lining materials from aluminum electrolysis cells. During production of aluminum, due to reactions between melted electrolyzer and pot lining as well as penetrating of fluorides into pot lining, newly-formed compounds inlayed in pot lining, destroyed the lining structure and brought pot lining cracking. Melt rushed out of lining cracks, cells have to be stopped running and ready for heavy repair. Cell life generally varies from 1500 to 2000 days. Spent potling is an unavoidable solid waste from aluminum industry."

As a part of a program to promote conservation and efficient utilization of petroleum resources, Bureau of Mines engineers are studying secondary oil-recovery projects in the United States. Published reports that set forth the pertinent facts of these operations help others to profit by the experience gained. This report presents the results of a study of secondary-recovery methods used in Kentucky by the Cumberland Petroleum Co. on its L. C. Bailey lease, Oil Springs pool, Magoffin County, Ky. This is believed to be the first water-flooding project in eastern Kentucky (fig. 1).

Answers to the questions "which rocks contain diamonds?" and "which indicator minerals should diamond explorers look for?" are no longer so easily obtained, now that diamonds are known to occur in lamproites and various types of lamprophyres, as well as their traditional source of kimberlites. One way of isolating those factors (host-rock"geochemistry, geographical or tectonic location, xenolith minerals, etc.) which are most critical in determining the diamond potential of a given pipe, is a detailed and critical re-examination of the huge volumes of accumulated data on kimberlites, lamproites and related rocks. A large analytical database to this end has been set up on an Apple Macintosh II microcomputer using the quasi-relational database management system 4th Dimension. Currently, it contains data for up to 90 major and trace elements, isotopic ratios and contained mineral compositions for some 4,000 rock specimens from all over the world. Many experiences in setting up this database are probably relevant to other geologists setting up their own systems: they include determining the relationships between data items; the advantages of codes over free text in representing categorical variables such as rock types; the need for rigorous error trapping and data validation; and the problem of missing data values and ambiguities thereof. The working system is now being used in a rigorous statistical assessment of the criteria which distinguish diamondiferous from non-diamondiferous rocks.

The Stave Falls Project of BC Hydro, situated 65km east of Vancouver, BC, Canada, involved the construction of a new two-unit 9OMW hydro-electric facility to replace an existing powerhouse. The final phase of the intake excavation consisted of a plug blast to break the channel through into Stave Lake. The plug consisted of a rock and till wall topped with a fill cofferdam, about 51m wide and between 8 and 12m high. Total rock volume was approximately 2600m3, overlaid with about 4600m3 of till/fill. This paper describes the methodology and practical techniques used in planning and loading the blast, and the precautions taken to protect the new and existing structures and equipment. Blasting of the plug by the normal method using downholes would have required the placing of extra fill and much drilling through casing, so the contractor made the decision to drill horizontal holes from the dry, downstream side. Because of poor rock conditions, all 183 holes had to be drilled oversize at 3.5” dia. and fitted with 2.5” id. plastic pipes to keep them open. Hole lengths ranged from 2.5 to 18rn, with a pattern of 1.5m spacing and l.Om burden (with the holes slightly fanned vertically). Because of significant water exposure, a film-packaged emulsion explosive was used, placed using a pneumatic cartridge loader for maximum borehole compaction. The powder factor averaged 1.3kg/m3 (2.21bs/yd3, rock only). An initiation system of combination surface/downhole delay shocktube units was employed, with double and triple redundancy. The maximum number of holes firing in any 8ms window was limited to three (to minimize vibration), while the whole sequence was fully activated before the first hole fired. All shocktube connections were secured and covered over at the foot of the rockface before flooding the excavation downstream of the plug prior to the shot, To protect the powerhouse gates from hydraulic shock, all hole collars were grouted and an air curtain was provided. The blast was completely successful. A maximum vertical displacement of 6m was recorded, but no flyrock was evident. Readings for peak over-pressure and vibration were well below the allowed limits. Mucking proved to be easy, with fine fragmentation, full pull, and no tights.

In this paper the process of sampling and assaying as it relates in particular to the platinum group elements (PGEs) is presented. A discussion of the geology of PGE deposits is included to provide an understanding of the mineralization that is considered necessary prior to sampling, as this has a direct bearing on the mineral resource estimate and also the selection of an appropriate mining cut. The discussion includes the selection of the sampling technique (drilling or face sampling), the size of the sample relating to the requirements of the laboratory, the potential mining cut, as well as a reference to sampling theory. The selection of an assay technique that is appropriate and will yield the optimal result based on sample turnaround, precision, accuracy, and cost is then considered. Examples are drawn from work undertaken on the Bushveld Complex (Merensky Reef, UG2 Chromitite Layer, Platreef) and Great Dyke (Main Sulphide Zone). Potash is a generic term used to describe a number of compounds containing the element potassium (K), which is one of the three major plant nutrients. Potash content of these compounds is commonly expressed as percentage potassium oxide (K20), and the market value of the products is usually dependent on contained K20. Most of the potash produced (approximately 95%) is used in agriculture as fertilizer. Potash products today are shipped by producing countries all over the world to meet the need for increased food production. WORLD POTASH RESERVES Apparent world potash reserves are shown in Table 15.2B.1 and total some 96 billion mt of recoverable potassium oxide. The Canadian reserves account for approximately one-half the known world reserves. The reserves shown represent the potassium oxide content of a variety of potash-bearing ores. The major ore is sylvinite (a mechanical mixture of KC1 and NaCl) from which KC1 or sylvite is recovered (63.2% K20 equivalent). Other ores, such as langbeinite (potassium, magnesium sulfate-22.7% K20) and carnallite (potassuim magnesuim chloride-17.0% K20) are also mined in various parts of the world, mainly for the potassium content. Theoretically, potassium is available in almost unlimited qualities from brines and saline waters. To date, the cost of recovery from salt brines has been greater than the costs by mining operations, but new technology could make brines and seawater an increasingly important source. POTASH PRODUCTION Potash production dates back to the 1860s in Germany, which was the only recorded producing country until 1912. By 1912 Germany was producing approximately 1 million tpy of K2O equivalent. Production began in France in 1913 and in the United States in 1915. World potash production and consumption are shown in Table 15.2B.2 for the years 1950-51 through 1967-68. In 1967 and 1968 the major potash-pro¬ducing countries in order of importance were those listed in Table 15.2B.3. By 1972 Canadian production had outstripped U.S. production. Bauxite from the Weipa and Andoom (North Queensland) deposits was treated to provide a low-iron raw material for high- alumina refractories or aluminium chloride manufacture. The operation involved passing crushed, calcined bauxite continuously through a single laboratory shaft furnace. Consecutive sulfidation and chlorination of the iron minerals within the furnace resulted in a beneficiate containing less than 2% (wt.) Fe203 and by-product ferric chloride con- taining only traces of aluminium.

THE presence of soluble base metals in precious-metal ores usually precludes cyanidation as the best method of treatment. The laboratory experiments described in this paper show the possibility of cyanidation of gold-silver ores containing less than 0.5 per cent, of cyanide-soluble copper and the effect of zinc in the cyanide solution. PART I.-COPPER IN CYANIDATION The proposed process of cyanidation of precious-metal ores containing copper is based on the regeneration of about 80 per cent., of the cyanide used in the dissolution of the copper. The method of regeneration involves a combination of the sulfide and the acid precipitation of the copper and silver. The resultant solution is made alkaline with lime, and the gold is precipitated with zinc dust. Solubility of Copper Minerals in Cyanide Solution In order to determine the solubility of copper minerals, including metallic copper, under the usual conditions for cyanidation, experiments were conducted with synthetic ores. Each ore sample was prepared by mixing the particular pure copper mineral with barren sea sand. Both the mineral and sand were ground to pass 100 mesh before they were thoroughly mixed. The percentage of copper in each head sample was determined by direct assay, excepting the metallic copper sample, which was computed on weights before mixing. Table 1 gives the results.

We operate a 50 cubic metre per hour mobile alluvial tin mine on small scattered deposits in the Irvinebank area. Wash is loaded by a Cat. 950 front end loader into the bin of a screening section and screen undersize is pumped to a separate jig unit. Both units are rubber tyre mounted and are shifted once a month when the haul distance gets to about 150 metres. The shift takes about 8 hours.The screening section is sited close to the face with a ramp for dumping in and a one metre drop for the screen oversize which is removed by the loader.A reciprocating plate feeder with variable rate hydraulic drive, feeds wash onto a horizontal 1.2 metre x 2.2 metre two deck Kinergy screen. Minus 10 millimetre undersize is pumped by a Warman 6/4 sand pump with a 37 kW variable speed Reeves Motordrive to the jig unit.The jigs are placed 20 to 70 metres away so that tailings will run back into previously mined ground. Reject stone is used to impound the sand and mud, allowing the water to filter through and return to the feed water pump.An MTE trapezoidal module is used as a primary jig. Hutch product is pumped to an eight cell clean-up jig which we developed ourselves along MTE lines. It has a trapezoidal shape and sawtooth stroke provided by cams. Clean tin is taken from the first four spigots. These consist of clear plastic tubes fitted with taps so that there is no water loss except when the tin is drawn off. Fine concentrate from the last four spigots is put over a curvilinear table which sits on a steel base packed with earth.

In order to comply with the latest European Highway Standards, the highway Salerno - Reggio Calabria, in southern Italy, had do be widened and upgraded to reduce its vulnerability to earthquakes. Reinforced concrete viaducts, no longer needed for the new road, had to be demolished. Many bridges still to be used for the highway required refurbishment due to 50 years of wind, frost and salt corrosion. This re-furbishment and new construction had to be carried out simultaneously. To keep the highway open dur-ing the renewal process, all traffic was directed to one side of the road. Demolition was conducted ex-tremely close to operational roadways and viaducts, as close as only 2 cm (0.8 in). Care had to be taken to ensure that the stresses (vibration levels), resulting from the demolished pylons and decks hitting the ground, were below the no-damage thresholds for the nearby acceptors (structures receiving the vibra-tion stresses). These structures included bridges, houses and buried pipelines (water, oil and gas). In some cases, care also had to be taken to preserve the existing pylons supporting decks that were being demolished; since the same pylons were going to be used for the new viaducts (bridges). New continu-ous decks in weathering steel replaced the old reinforced concrete decks.

THE oil-bearing districts of Poland are found on the slopes of the Carpathian Mountains. The oil belt extends from Gorlice southeast to Stanislawow. It is approximately 250 miles long and 30 miles wide, and comprises four geological districts: the western, or Gorlice district; next, to the east, the Krosno district; the Boryslaw district; and, in the extreme southeast, the Stanislawow district. The amount of petroleum produced in Poland from the beginning of the oil industry scarcely totals 26,000,000 metric tons, or 15 per cent. of the estimated supply. Of this amount, 18,000,000 tons have been taken from the fields of Boryslaw within 25 years; and only about 8,000,000 tons from all other fields within a period twice as long, although some of these other fields represent just as good possibilities as did Boryslaw at the beginning of its development. The Polish oil industry was severely stricken by the war. The retreating Russian armies, in 1915, destroyed a large number, of the existing oil wells, nor was the post-war period favorable for the development of this industry;; the money and credit stringency interfered with the expansion of drilling. But since 1921 there has. been a slow steady increase in production and there is now every reason to believe that conditions in the industry will improve. In fact, an increase in new drillings has been reported for the current year. The production of crude oil in Poland, in 1913, amounted to 1,113,668 metric tons. In 1914, the production declined- to 655,600 metric tons. In 1921, the production was 705,596 tons; in 1922, 712,428 tons, and in 1923, 737,182 tons; or more than 5,000,000 bbl. But the fields have a much greater potential output, which could be realized were the capital available for prospecting and new drilling. The principal producing, and at present most exploited, fields are around Boryslaw and Schodnica. These fields were developed rapidly for in the first year of their modern exploitation the wells were gushers of moderate depth. However, as a result of heavy drilling, the shallow folds have been exhausted and oil can be reached now only by deep drilling. Wells of almost 5600 ft. have been drilled in Boryslaw. Because of these drilling conditions, a large number of engineers and workmen specially skilled in deep drilling are to be found in this field.

Studies were carried out on dissolution and oxidation of iron powder in ammonia-ammonium carbonate solution using oxygen over pressures. Cobalt and nickel losses during iron oxidation under different conditions were investigated. Regression equations were derived for percent cobalt loss and percent iron oxidation using ammonia, ammonium carbonate and oxygen partial pressure as the variables. The equations were tested for adequacy using Fisher's test. Cobalt losses increased with the increase of initial cobalt concentration and about 400 mg/l of cobalt was lost from a solution containing 500 mg/l cobalt. A maximum of about 80 mg/l nickel was lost from 1 g/l nickel containing solution, and this loss remained the same even when the nickel concentration was increased to 7.5 g/l.

Hydraulic fill using surface sand deposits or cycloned tailings has been used in underground mining for at least fifty years. Current technology requires a permeable fill and high cement additions for strong fill. Shortages in quantities of acceptable fill with finely ground ore may require rockfill or aggregate to be introduced as a supplement and these usually incur additional distribution costs. Alternative approaches to the problem are now being developed whereby the pulp density of the fill is raised so that it is delivered either as a dense slurry or as a paste. These regimes of fill behaviour are defined together with the plant and pumping techniques required to prepare and deliver the materials. Test techniques to define the different regimes of behaviour are identified and the variation in material properties for fills with varying pulp densities are outlined. The results indicate that high pulp density fills are stronger and have less permeability restrictions than conventional fills and that aggregate can be carried with the pulp. Thus the disadvantage of finer materials can be turned into an economic advantage. Criteria are developed for defining the type of operation suited to this Technology.

An analysis of pumping figures suggests that there are two distinct styles of water inflow patterns in Zambia's mines. Carbonate hosted orebodies (Kabwe and Nampundwe) display a characteristic seasonal variation in water inflow with peak pumping showing a short time lag with respect to the rainfall pattern. Aquifer characteristics are controlled by secondary, weathering enhanced, near surface phenomena. Non-carbonate hosted orebodies such as those of the Copperbelt (Konkola and Nkana) occur in successions of highly variable lithology and consequently there are stacked aquifers of variable character. Inflow of water does not display seasonal variation. The major factors affecting the amount of inflow are the structural setting, the geometry of the orebody and the local lithostratigraphy. Thus the Konkola orebodies which occur in a saddle shaped open ended basin result in what is probably the wettest mine in the world, pumping some 376,000 cubic metres of water a day.
