Production and financial planning for a new underground mine requires the coordination of equipment and coal reserves in a manner which assures that resources are utilized efficiently in achieving the target mine production. It is necessary to establish the productions which are attainable at the section level during different mining operations (advance, retreat, development) and under different mining conditions (roof, seam height, resource quality). It is also necessary to identify the interactions between production plans and ventilation equipment So that operations can be carried out without disruptions caused by inadequate ventilation. A set of computer models has been applied in planning a number of new coal, oil shale, and phosphate mines. A critical path production model, CPMINE, was used to determine face production levels for different cut sequences and seam heights, taking into account machine performance characteristics and operational availabilities under these varying conditions. The results formed a production data base for use in the mine sequencing model, MPLAN. This model processes each of the segments of a user-defined mine sequence network (strategy tree) taking into account the equipment available for mining operations and the previously determined production scheme devised by the mining engineer. Mine ventilation was analyzed with an expanded version of the Penn State MVS Ventilation model to determine fan and ventilation shaft requirements for supporting alternative production strategies. The MCOM mine cost analysis model has been applied to evaluate the economic performance of mining alternatives. The results of these studies were used to make decisions relating to equipment selection and acquisition schedules for both room-and-pillar and longwall mining systems. The approach and procedures which were used during these studies are described.

The design of mine openings and the assessment of their reserve are processes ihicl, require the routine manipulation of considerable amounts of data. A number of computer programs have been assembled to operate in a mini computer in order to provide some mechanical assistance for these processes. The system responds to plain language commands. which allows mining engineers to compute the reserves for a number of possible mining outlines, on an interactive basis. Methods of numerical analysis were used in preference to statistical or qeostatistical techniques.

General Gold was discovered in quartz veins at Wiluna in 1896, and the first lode was discovered in 1904. Since 1896, some 2.5 million ounces of gold have been produced from the Wiluna area. The mining operations at Wiluna are 100 per cent owned by Wiluna Gold Pty Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Wiluna Mines Ltd. Oxide and sulphide gold ore is extracted by conventional open pit mining techniques, and ran-of-mine ore is processed through two separate circuits. The oxide circuit has a capacity to treat 600 0(X) tonnes per annum and the sulphide circuit has a capacity to treat 400 (XX) tonnes per annum. Additional gold is won by dump leaching sub-grade oxidised ore and by retreating of primary ore flotation tailings from previous operations. Testwork carried out in 1990 indicated the viability of leaching dumps of run-of-mine oxide ore, and in June 1991 Signet Engineering of Perth, WA, was awarded an EPCM contract to construct a nominal 2.5 million tonne dump leach facility, for a total construction estimate of 51.75 million.

The main components of face design are the power loader, face conveyor and powered support system and the interaction of these components determines the effectiveness of strata control. A major influence upon the interrelationship of this equipment is the geological environment, of which seam thickness appears to play an important role. Recent thick seam experience indicates a significantly different characteristic behaviour pattern from that observed in thin seams The structural integrity of the face wall is particularly influenced by seam discontinuities such as natural joint planes and mining-induced fractures in the yield zone ahead of the faceline. In addition, the presence of stone bands or dirt partings in the seam offers interfaces for uncontrolled release of blocky material. Some case study experience at British collieries provides a comparison with performance data at a specific location, that highlights the importance of coal face layout and design.

In determining new areas for slag disposal a foamed slag aggregate has been developed for use as a skid resistant material. The foaming of the slag does not rely on the use of water, but rather on the slag chemistry. Laboratory test results indicated that a product having good skid resistant properties has been prod- uced. A section of road is being assessed for performance of the aggregate in a surface dressing application under heavy load. The results from the test section after seven months have shown that the foamed slag is suitable for this application. Further test sections are now being considered.

MINE FIRES, in the Butte District, have been a source of trouble and expense for the past thirty years, for while the actual fire area in most of the mines has been comparatively small, the handling of the gas has generally been a much larger problem than the actual putting out of the fire. The chief causes of these fires have been: Defective electrical equipment, incendiarism or carelessness, and spontaneous combustion. While fires from the first two causes have been numerous, they have generally been discovered and extinguished before they became very serious. Spontaneous combustion has been the cause of most of the large fires. Sufficient heat has been generated by ground movement, high rock temperatures, and decomposition to set fire to inflammable materials (tarred ropes, canvas, dry timber, manure, and hay) left in the gobs some years ago. Also, the heat resulting from the oxidation of the fine broken sulfide ore is sometimes sufficient to set fire to the timbers. In 1906, a fire was discovered on the 1100-ft. level of the Minnie Healy mine about 400 ft. (122 m.) west of the Minnie Healy shaft, which presumably originated, in one of the upper levels, from spontaneous combustion. The fire was walled off by concrete bulkheads and a pillar of ground 100 ft. (30 m.) thick was left below and mining resumed underneath. During subsequent operations, this pillar became cracked and broken and the fire passed into the new workings. It travelled downward and spread rapidly until, in 1917, it had become necessary to wall off portions of the Tramway, Leonard, and West Colusa mines on the 1300, 1400, 1500, 1600, 1800, 1900, and 2000-ft. levels, and the top of the 2200-ft. raises were sealed. The fire area now consists roughly of a block 1000 by 1200 ft. and from the 600-ft. to the 2200-ft. level. This block is composed largely of a series of parallel northwest-southeast nearly vertical veins and stringers that form a large orebody, with no well-defined walls but badly fractured and faulted, and known locally as "Horsetail Ore." These veins, or orebodies, are mined by the square-set or the rill method.

INTRODUCTION The slope stability research plan at Kennecott was developed to serve the specific needs of large, open pit mines; primarily those developed in faulted and highly-fractured intrusive deposits. The program emphasis is on applied research; being defined in this case as research into the engineering mechanics of discontinuous rock and into the related rock property survey and slope design techniques. The program has been developed in phases, with each phase organized to explore more thoroughly the most significant findings of previous work and to improve on techniques found to be applicable. The current work is based on principles developed early in the program and that show promise of having engineering and economic value. A brief summary of the conceptual principles of the program is given to put our current work in context. This is followed by a review of the two cooperative programs done with the U. S. Bureau of Mines. Most recent work is described and interpreted in terms of practical slope design. Although failure-free slopes are a desirable goal, it is recognized that some failures will occur when overall slope designs approach a calculated safety factor of one. A discussion of failure control research is therefore offered. BACKGROUND In 1965 Kennecott management specified that a slope stability technology must be used to achieve optimum development of ore resources. The subject was carefully explored and by 1960 it had been established that there was no technology readily applicable to open pit slope design. Therefore, in 1962, Kennecott Copper Corporation and the U. S. Bureau of Mines agreed upon a cooperative research program having the objective of developing a mine slope stability science. One of the first decisions made by the cooperating groups was that the research must be conducted primarily in the field and not in the unrealistic environments of a laboratory. Accordingly, the Kimbley Pit, an abandoned mine once operated by Kennecott's Nevada Mines Division in Nevada, was selected for the full-scale research. Fortunately, there was near-universal agreement on the basic stability parameters and thus on the areas to be investigated. These parameters were acknowledged to be: (1) anisotropy (generally due to faults or joints), (2) stress, and (3) water; in that order of importance.

Although these earths were actually weathered basalts, the term is now applied to weathering profiles developed upon a wide range of bedrocks. Since the announcement of early experimental work on rotating magnetic field (RMF) separation at the Sixth Mill OperatorsÆ Conference in 1997, the concept of RMF separation has been developed and tested further, and a range of separator designs is now being developed for the mineral processing industry. Shortened, but full diameter, prototypes of these designs are now available for test separations. The main advantage of RMF low and medium intensity attraction separation is the significant reduction in particle entrapment. This reduction is so significant that RMF separators are capable of operating very close to their theoretical limit for separator precision. This makes small laboratory RMF attraction separators ideal for low to medium intensity magnetic sample analysis, and larger separators ideal for applications requiring sharp magnetic susceptibility splits. Feedrates and separation rates are comparable to those of conventional attraction separators. Although RMF attraction separators are now well advanced in development, RMF rotation separation is still in the early experimental stage. The exception to this is the dry particle rotation eddy current separator that offers eddy current separation of small non-ferrous metallic particles from about 2 mm down to about 100 microns. Wet small particle eddy current separation is also possible, but has not yet been developed to a practical stage.

More than 102 epithermal quartz veins have been identified in the area, with variable lengths, thicknesses, orientations and dips that constitute what is possibly one of the most extensive outcropping vein systems on earth.

In these trying times of proration and low oil prices, it is decidedly necessary for all branches of the petroleum industry to accord full recognition to the economic phenomena that contribute to its varying state of welfare. Perhaps no other single factor has a more important bearing upon the general oil situation than the supply and demand of gasoline. Year after year, the records have shown that the degree of prosperity or depression accompanying the industry's developments has been to a large extent influenced by the degree of balance maintamed between the supply and demand of gasoline. More and more it is being realized within the industry that equilibrium between the supply and demand of gasoline forms the basic structure of crude and product market values and, consequently, the deciding factor in the financial results of the industry as a whole. The influence of the gasoline situation upon the market and financial structure of the petroleum industry was effectively demonstrated during 1930, when excess accumulation of gasoline undermined not only the refined oil market but the crude market as well. In fact, it was a top-heavy gasoline situation that defeated the realization of benefits that might have accrued from an otherwise favorable statistical position in the producing branch of the industry. Indicative of this is the fact that crude oil production was curtailed to the extent of 98,323,000 bbl. last year, while refinery runs to stills were maintained at an excessive rate until late in the year, creating an excess gasoline production of 6,663,000 bbl. above actual requirements. Nevertheless, the movement to curtail refinery operations during the closing months of the year prevented a far worse situation, although it came too late to turn the ebbing momentum of the general oil market. Despite the severe depression of the market values that accompanied 1930 developments, it can be said that the results attained during the closing months of the year, in the direction of production control, marked a decisive turn in the industry's economic affairs. In fact, a review of the oil situation from every angle points definitely to a better general understanding and recognition of the workings of the economic law of supply and demand. INTRODUCTION At some point in the design and development stage of a mineral venture, the assay laboratory building, its interior layout, and major pieces of analytical equipment must be specified for construction or purchase. Even the most experienced chemist would have difficulty in proposing useful specifications without a good deal of investigation into the kinds of analytical tasks that the laboratory will be expected to address, the probable workload, and the operating time constraints. This chapter will provide a logical approach to laboratory design that starts with such an investigation. Specific examples throughout the chapter are drawn from the author's tenure as Chief Chemist at Barrick Mercur Gold Mines, Mercur, Utah, from 1982 to 1985. It is necessary to understand the nature of a modern production laboratory, and to recognize that its operations bear more resemblance to its parent processing plant than to a research, teaching, or custom analytical laboratory. The assay lab is a processing facility unto itself, where samples and reagents are the raw materials, and assay results are the final product. Its most efficient operating mode is as an assembly line, treating samples in a nearly continuous flow. Nevertheless , there are important differences between the lab and the process plant. The products - assays - are individually unknown quantities until they are "produced.' This can vastly complicate quality control compared to the process plant. Capital costs are general 1 y small compared to the plant, but the ratio of operating costs to capital costs for a laboratory is often very much higher than for the plant. This is due to the labor intensive nature of analytical work. For instance, during Fiscal Year 1984 at Barrick Mercur Gold Mines, labor costs for the laboratory staff represented about five percent of the total labor budget, while the laboratory building and equipment represented only about six-tenths of one percent of the original start-up capital. Failure to recognize both the similarities and differences between laboratory and plant operations is the foremost cause of difficulty encountered in designing a laboratory. The

Methods of calculation of the reliability of process computers are getting more and more important. The paper presents long period observations of 21 process computers with online applications in the iron and steel industry. About 5000 failure events during 10 years have been systematically recorded and evaluated. On the basis of these long time observations it is possible to develop a probability model of the failure behaviour of process computers.This failure model is constructed with four different states of the process computer:Working phase, working phase with undetected reasons, repair phase, failure phase resulting from external influences.The model is defined by differential equations for the probability of one of these four phases. Long time observations show, that all of these four phases are closely correlated with the capa-city of a process computer, restarting without detection of failure reason, changes of programs and software, costs and time of repair. So the result of this analysis is a model of failure for process computers, which allows to predict breakdowns of process computers on the basis of external parameters.

About three years ago, the writer presented a paper1 on the rate of heating and cooling of a 24-in. round ingot. The present paper deals with work done on larger ingots at the plant of the Allis Chalmers Mfg. Co., Milwaukee, Wis., in August, 1919. Sufficient data on ingots of all sizes were desired to enable one to calculate in advance the rate at which any ingot could be raised to a forging temperature without injury to the steel, determining also the temperature gradient between different sections of the ingot and the length of time necessary to heat to the center. This has now been experimentally determined for 24-in. and 45-in. ignots by the writer and for a 18-in. cube by E. F. Law.2 J. F. Harper has also made tests on heat-treating temperatures on 30-in, ingots; which data are included in this paper. No attempt is made here to work out a formula for the heat penetration of steel, for too many factors are involved concerning which we have not sufficient information, as for instance, the specific heat of steel up to 2300' F. It is hoped that eventually a set of formulas will be developed so that one may calculate maximum allowable temperature differences within an ingot for any particular kind of steel and the rate of absorption of heat and temperature gradient within the ingot for a definite temperature head. "Why geophysics? We will have to drill anyway." Reliance on geophysical methods for detailed target appraisals will increase as direct surface evidence becomes more subtle. This will create a need for more effective and efficient geo- physical programs. Numerous computer-based techniques that deal with a broad range of geophysical problems are described in the literature. The purpose of this chapter is to provide a framework for the systematic application of these techniques to effect an overall optimization of the geophysical appraisal. The concepts described are not technique specific, but should serve as a guide for increasing the effectiveness and efficiency of any geophysical program. Fig. 1 shows a generalized flow chart of the major aspects of the program described. The three main subdivisions of a 'geophysical program are discussed: (1) survey design, (2) data processing, and (3) data interpretation. Detailed flow charts, outlining the goals, the requirements for meeting the goals, and the steps followed within each subdivision are presented at the beginning of each section. The objectives and type problems of each subdivision are defined, followed by a description of applicable computer methods. . References are cited that give a general cross section of computer techniques available in the literature, and examples are given in each subdivision to demonstrate basic concepts and the use. of computers in solving the type problems.

The dielectric properties of practically all oxide and sulphide ore minerals are such that they heat rapidly when irradiated with microwaves particularly at the standard frequency of 2450 MHz. The presence of carbon or low rank coal mixed with the minerals still further enhances the heating rate. Amongst the patented technologies being investigated are: (i) the direct reduction of oxides with or without carbon included in the pellets or briquettes; (ii) microwave precursor heating of composites ahead of smelt reduction; (iii) microwave smelting of ore or concentrate mixtures with carbon, sometimes assisted with oxygen. Microwaves appear to stimulate endothermic reduction reactions as readily as they do exothermic oxidation reactions. Being a method of achieving "bulk" heating, composites or columns of ore-char blends rapidly heat throughout rather than from the outside inwards as in conventional heating. The microwaves of themselves do not generate any gas - the only gases to be cleaned are the products of reaction in the composites or blends, plus the products of oxygen smelting. In the case of sulphide composites, depending on the quantity and type of low rank coal or char present, sulphur may be eliminated, and collected, in the elemental form. Furthermore, reactions seem to take place at lower temperatures than in conventional smelting but no doubt at the "points" where actual reactions are taking place the atomic or molecular vibrations are such as to satisfy the laws of thermodynamics. Examples are given of the production of unusual products of smelting sulphide concentrates and also the alloys produced from refractory minerals such as chromite and ilmenite. The techniques have been used to produce products with as wide a range of melting points as relatively pure tin and tungsten-molybdenum alloys. Special equipment is being designed and evaluated for these new fields of pyrometallurgy.

Geotechnical conditions often have a critical influence on the design of new open pit and underground mines, but they are often considered of secondary importance in relation to other factors, such as detailed geology, orebody geometry and grade distribution. As a result, geotechnical studies may not be carried out during early project investigations or, at best, may be given only superficial attention, often to the overall detriment of the project. Technically and economically, it is logical that geotechnical studies should be integrated with geological investigations as soon as it becomes evident that the particular deposit may prove to be economic. The paper discusses the use of geotechnical information in the selection of mining methods and mine design for underground mines and for wall design and assessment of excavation characteristics in open pit mines. It then considers methods of obtaining the relevant data, with particular reference to exploration boreholes. Selected case studies on the application of geotechnical data to mine design are Included.

WHEN a new material becomes available to industry, it is useful to describe its properties as a guide to its most effective application; and when the new material may be produced in compositions having a series of graded properties, tests to select the combination of properties best adapted for various uses are helpful. The class of materials to be considered in this paper are hard tool materials produced by processes of powder metallurgy from hard carbide constituents and various matrices of iron, nickel or cobalt, or alloys of them with tungsten, or tungsten and carbon. The customary use of carbide hard alloys is for metal-cutting tools; although wire-drawing dies, lathe centers, follow rests, grinding rests, burnishers, rolls, extrusion dies, measuring gauges and micrometers, and a number of other tools are also made with these hard alloys as the essential wear-resisting parts. The properties and tests to be considered are those affecting these uses. In the development of tool materials since the industrial revolution we have had carbon tool steels, Mushet steel, high-speed steels, stellites, and now cemented carbide compositions. For an understanding of the latter category of materials their properties and uses relative to the older and more familiar tool materials will be considered. Hardness has been the property of greatest practical interest in tool materials. The word "hardness" is a generalized term lacking definite¬ness unless the specific test used is described. However, efforts to explain physical properties as a consequence of chemical bond, and distance between atoms in chemical compounds have been illuminating. This seems the most generalized attack on the problem, and is based upon the idea that atoms in a lattice are held together as the square of the valence and inversely as the square of the distance between the atoms.
