Underground airways are characterized by irregular shape and uneven surfaces including large-scale natural roughness, fractures, and a super-imposed sand roughness. Swirls in the grooves of the wall and separation because of the periodic variation of the open cross sec- tion, due to the blasting patterns, make it almost impossible to calculate average con- vective heat transfer computationally on the bases of the geometrical description of the surface. However, dimensionless friction factors can be used to characterize the surface effect of an airway and an analogy between heat and momentum transfer can be applied to calcu- late an average convective heat transfer Coefficient.

Woodlawn Mines began underground operations in 1986. At the time of going underground it was envisaged that there would be no 'contract' payment to the underground employees. This was a relatively unique step to make, especially as most major underground mines in Australia relied heavily on the contract system to motivate their workforce. (Obviously with varying degrees of success.) Woodlawn faced the task of motivating their employees through a multi-skilled system with a great emphasis on leadership and a genuine care for their employees. The 'proof of the pudding' is that Woodlawn has not lost any time over industrial issues since beginning underground operations in 1986. To achieve success in any operation the organisation must not only be advanced in its management principles but also be prepared to be innovative in the way it deals with physical problems, ie ground control, equipment selection and maintenance. Difficult ground conditions at Woodlawn have necessitated the deployment of two Cabolt Jumbos and the construction of cost-effective shotcrete systems. The shotcrete system now being built has been tested in a prototype form and is proving to be a safe and simple way to manage weak, low stress friable ground. Although the ground at Woodlawn has low stress component by virtue of the fact the ore can have a density of 4.5dm3, cable dowelling has become a necessity. The two cable dowel jumbos install high quality reinforced cables. The pressure of 'production' means that these machines must be consistently available for use and the training of maintenance personnel and operators ensures that a maximum of cable dowels can be installed over any given time span. In any modem mine ventilation is a primary concern and the major area of concern comes from the vehicles themselves. In our recent replacement for the standard 'Toro' loader, three engine options were considered. A relative newcomer to underground mining was accepted. The Detroit 60 series (DDEC) engine came with a great reputation and has lived up to this. The engine has an electronic management system that reduces particulates to a hardly visible minimum, provides great amounts of engine power and reduces fuel consumption by approximately 45 per cent. The operational benefits of such an engine are worth sharing through this conference.

A number of terrane reconstructions conflict with global plate histories or with data from adjacent regional studies. Paleogeographic maps have ignored terranes thus are over-simplified. This paper represents an attempt to "marry" Mesozoic global plate reconstructions and terrane analysis to produce examples of a "third generation" of global plate tectonic maps. The best approach to global terrane analysis involves intercomparison of all regional data and the evolving global model. Data conflicts within and between terranes and regions must be resolved by a system of relative data reliability "weighting." The most reliable and useful data are those which constrain "departure" (rift) and "arrival" (collision) times. Certain ad hoc decisions aid in the analysis (e.g. only one net vector allowed per plate). The maps that follow summarize Early Mesozoic global tectonic history at three critical junctures: 240 MA (Triassic); 180 MA (Jurassic); and 120 MA (Cretaceous). Due to space limitations, maps drawn at 20 m.y. intervals appear elsewhere. A preliminary Middle Triassic reconstruction is presented in Figure 1. Major plates and continental blocks are labeled; smaller blocks are marked with abbreviations. Examination of Figure 1 indicates the necessity of modeling Triassic tectonics with at least 68 blocks. Spalling- off of microcontinental slivers from Gondwanaland is active some 70 m.y. before the actual breakup of the supercontinent. In the SW sector of the Pacific, the Australian margins were embroidered with several terranes (e.g. Sumba) which eventually rifted away and crossed Tethys. The NW sector at this time included 10 microcontinental chips forming a huge archipelago along the Asian margin. All blocks inboard of Indochina collided by latest Triassic. Terranes of the NE sector include several (e.g. Arctic Alaska) along the North American margin, and at least six large blocks (e.g. Stikinia) drifting SE with the Farallon Plate. The SE sector

Commercial modeling software and increasingly efficient computers enable today computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to be used as a tool for a more comprehensive understanding of the flash smelting and flash converting processes. CFD modeling can be used for design purposes in many technological areas, but some relevant physical and chemical phenomena are still missing in the commercial CFD solver packages. Therefore, Outokumpu has developed several subroutines for solvers to describe analytically the phenomena in the flash smelting environment. CFD sub-models of the copper concentrate and matte combustion, the particle-particle-wall interactions and for more accurate radiation properties of the gas-particle suspension are needed to ensure reliability of numerical simulations on the flash smelting and converting vessels. Several basic combustion phenomena can be modeled with a number of commercial solver packages, but own models for combustion must be included in the case of sulfides as the feed. Mathematical models for copper concentrate and solid matte combustion have been developed during the last decade. They calculate compositions of the particles and temperature, based on extensive experimental research work in laboratory scale furnaces with validated kinetic parameters and temperature measurements of reacting particles. Inside and near the concentrate burner, the standard particle tracking methods do not include the particle-particle interactions and the particle-wall interaction is too much simplified to describe properly the particle collisions with the distribution cone. Therefore, additional models for the particle-particle as well as particle-wall interactions have been written and implemented. For thermal radiation, models for the emissivity of a gas mixture and for calculating the particle absorption and scattering coefficients have been developed and tested. In addition, the advanced radiation model can be used i.e. in the enhanced simulation of off-gas cooling in the heat recovery boiler area of the flash smelter.

THIS paper is a continuation of two earlier papers, l, 2 and presents new data on the grindability of various ores and other materials-the results of several years of intermittent research work on the nature of grinding and interpretation of test results. It is divided into five parts: 1. The tabulated results of several hundred grindability tests on a wide variety of ores. 2. A method of correcting screen analyses and calculating from them the surface and other properties. 3. A description of a new method of measuring the "surface energy" of an ore by pendulum impact tests. 4. Test results. 5. A general discussion of the test results and their application to grinding problems. 1. GRINDABILITY OF VARIOUS ORES This part is a continuation of the paper listed as reference No. 1. The method of testing is described in detail in that paper. The sample to be tested is crushed to all through 6 mesh in rolls set at x6-in. opening in closed circuit with a screen. Of this sample 700 C.C. is ground dry in a laboratory ball mill under constant conditions of mill speed and ball charge in closed circuit with a screen of the desired size at 250 per cent circulating load. The mill is cylindrical, 12 by 12 in., and rotates at 70 r.p.m. It contains a charge of 285 iron balls weighing 20,125 grams and ranging from 1 ½ to ¾ in. in diameter. Each test is continued for a sufficient number of periods to establish equilibrium at 250 per cent circulating load, or until the composition of the circulating load is constant for successive periods. Tests are conducted at the mesh size to which the ore is to be ground in practice, and the results are expressed as the net production in grams of screen undersize per revolution of the mill. This paper was prepared as a brief for Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) to guide input at a series of round tables carried out by the Federal Government in response to the 38th Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade (SCFAIT) report, on ?Mining in Developing Countries and Corporate Social Responsibility?. This document mandate is to provide background information, analysis and recommendations on the practice of Canadian exploration and mining companies abroad. This research was based on 11 case studies of Canadian companies which have experienced conflicts or controversies overseas. All case studies were assembled through an extensive literature review of publicly available documentation and communications with representatives of the mining companies to assist in deepening the insights into the drivers of the conflicts and the needs of Canadian companies in similar situations. The case studies include both exploration and mining operations. Our analysis begins with the identification of general and case specific drivers of conflict/controversy in each case study. Company names are kept confidential and only anonymous results are presented. We make ample use of simple flow charts and schematic diagrams to explain how contextual drivers and aggravators and company drivers and mitigators play varied and interrelated roles in conflicts. The diagrams also illustrate the cumulative analysis of drivers including the linkages among drivers/aggravators/mitigators across different domains (social, governance, NGO/media and company). Finally, we discuss needs of companies and propose recommendations for addressing social responsibility and human rights concerns.

"A new crushing or liberation technique by means of underwater explosion is put forward. This technique is suitable for crushing and liberating various materials, for instance: the electric parts of the discarded portable telephone, CPU from mother-boards of PCs, steel from plastics tubes used as construction materials, waste constructed materials like panels, tungsten carbide scraps, as well as slitting the optical disk (e.g. DVDs), etc. The materials to be crushed are immersed in water and then the explosion is carried out by using only a small amount of explosive. The shock waves in combination with the generated bubbles are very effective in liberating the materials of different densities. It was observed that the metals crushed or liberated by using this technique were leached much faster when compared with the conventional crushing technique. This crushing method can be applied for liberation of many kinds of electric or mechanical tools. Introduction The explosive has been used since Nobel’s invention in 1866. The main practical application of explosion is in the large scale public works, such as dam construction, land development, tunnel, mining and dismantlement of building. The shock wave caused by explosion extremely can generate high pressure able to break the concrete and rock, and other materials. In this study, the crushing and liberation of waste materials was carried out by explosion in water. The idea was to use this technique as a pretreatment stage prior to recycling. The explosion in water can be used to crush hard materials, helping the liberation between different attached materials. These are individual factors which require inherent talent which in turn is a condition evolved after generations of culture. Thus, very elaborate higher education for indiscriminate masses of humanity or students may not necessarily show the expected results. In other words, it is possible that higher specialized education should be given only to the few talented individuals, and their capacity and worth should be judged by as highly qualified and talented teachers. Quality is the greatest of all competitive aids. An essential qualification that must be possessed by a quality mineral industries college is a high caliber teaching staff, for the mineral sciences will advance in the coming years only if the leading minds of today are made avail- able as the mental springboards for our scientists of tomorrow. Abstract -The Changning-Menglian metallogenic belt in western Yunnan, China, is characterized by the occurrences of both Pb-Zn-Cu and Cu massive sulfides in Permo-Carboniferous mafic volcanic sequences. These deposits were formed in a back-arc basin at a rifted continental margin in the Paleozoic Tethys Ocean. Pb-Zn-Cu deposits are associated with alkalic basalt, andesite, and lesser felsic volcanic rocks intercalated with limestone, which probably formed along an immature rifting segment on a continental basement. These volcanic rocks are enriched in K, Ti, LREE, and other incompatible elements, and have the attributes of alkalic within-plate basalt. An extensive unit of sulfide- carbonate-silica shale in proximity to massive sulfides contains high values of Mn, As, Mo, W, Sn, Sb, and Hg, and has REE patterns that are similar to the volcanic rocks. This, together with the graded bedding in the footwall volcanic rocks, suggests that the sulfides precipitated in a shallow, unstable, and carbonate-saturated volcanic basin. A stringer zone is traced downward for 500 m below the massive sulfide orebodies. It is characterized by an upper sericite-quartz zone and an extensive lower skarn alteration with enhanced W, Sn, and Bi. Lead isotope data show both continental basement and magmatic sources may have supplied the ore metals. Cu deposit and occurrences are hosted by tholeiitic units that represent the mature spreading segments in the back-arc basin. The tholeiitic lavas have LREE-depleted or flat REE patterns similar to MORB or back-arc mafic lavas. The cupriferous massive sulfides are overlain by an extensive unit of chlorite-magnetite or ochre, suggesting a relatively oxygenated oceanic basin. Ni and less Co mineralization is found in dolomite veins of the stringer zone. Enhanced concentrations of Ni, Co, Au, and As are found in the massive sulfides and in sulfide-rich tuffites. The geological setting and mineralization of the Changning-Menglian belt has similarities with modern back-arc basins such as the Manus Basin in the western Pacific.

It has been found that cold work and annealing treatments greatly retard subsequent grain growth and re-crystallization in thoria-dispersed nickel and NiCr. It is suggested that this is due to cavities which form at the particle-matrix interface durilzg cold work. Some of' the cavities formed are stable at elevated temperatures and prevent the mouement of large-angle grain boundaries. The movement of these boundaries at elevated temperatures is known to start recrystal-lization and when they are pinned by voids recrystal-lization is made more difficult. TD Nichro,me had a maximun resistance to recrystallization when the initial structure was coarse-grained and had a low dislocation density. A precipitation reaction occurred between 700° and 1200° F in cold-worked TD Nichrome. It has been shown by Grant and his coworkers1-3 that a large part of the strength of dispersion-hardened materials is a result of the cold-worked structure produced during fabrication. In a comparison of the strength of cold-worked copper with and without an oxide dispersion, Grant4 has demonstrated that there is little difference in strength at room temperature. The function of the dispersion is essentially to maintain the cold-worked structure at higher temperatures than is possible in the base material. The dispersion accomplishes this by making recrystallization more difficult. The mechanism by which this is achieved is discussed in this paper. The fabrication history of the material has been found to greatly influence recrystallization behavior and this aspect is discussed in some detail. In previous discussions on stresses in hoisting ropes, little has been said concerning the effect of the elasticity of the rope itself on the stresses due to acceleration. Laschinger1 has calculated acceleration stresses for several cases but he has ignored the elasticity of the rope as a factor, except as it compresses the drum and stretches itself as it winds thereon. He also deals with steam plants and he shows the effect of the "jerky" start of the engine. This effect would actually be reduced by the elasticity of the cable. With the advent of the motor-driven hoist, new conditions have arisen. The jerk mentioned by Laschinger has been eliminated and smoother starting made possible. But the elastic properties of the rope seem to introduce considerable periodic acceleration stresses in the rope. The following discussion of acceleration stresses is based on the assumption of a constant acceleration at the drum. To be exact, the mathematical work is based upon the assumption that the top is moving upward with a constant acceleration, and ignores the fact that the cable is shortening as it winds. However, the effect of the shortening would be inconsiderable during the first part of the acceleration period. Most hoisting engineers make the assumption of constant acceleration at the drum. Under the older method of calculating acceleration stresses, this would be true with a constant torque motor. But if stresses vary, as this paper attempts to show that they do, constant torque would not give constant acceleration, although the velocity-time curves obtained in the full size test herein described showed that they approach rather closely to this condition, at least as nearly as could be measured. Over the longer term, the adoption of new technology is an essential component in the endless tasks of reducing mining costs, improving safety and improving environmental standards. However the choice of which of the many available new technologies to adopt and which not to adopt is not easy and the price of mistakes can be very high. The most important issue for mine developers faced with making such choices is knowing whether or not a new technology has been developed to the stage where the timing is right for its adoption. A system for categorising new mining technologies is provided. It provides a basis for more easily reaching common understandings about various new technologies and the background information supplied provides an understanding of what it takes to get new technologies to the proven stage and the risks of never getting there. Wherever possible, new full-scale mine developments should not rely on unproven technologies. Approaches to handling situations where a proposed new mine development is not feasible on the basis of proven technologies are also provided. If any commitment to the use of unproven technologies is made, a guarantee of high quality development support from the supplier of that technology is essential. Several case studies of successful and unsuccessful new technology development programs at BHP are Provided.

Since 1981 two single entry roadways have been driven at Ellalong Colliery for a total distance of 1 030 metres. They were driven at a height of 1.73 metres within the 3.7 metres thick Greta Seam using a Dosco In-Seam Miner (I.S.M.). Ventilation of the drivage was accomplish- ed by an exhausting fan in series with steel ducting and flexible ducting in the immediate face area. The air quantities provided at the face were more than adequate to comply with the requirements of -the auxiliary fan rules and the Coal Mines Regulation Act, 1912, as amended. The experience gained in these drivages demonstrated that the ventilation of long single entry headings can be practically and safely achieved using existing equipment.

A continued exploration programme has further defined the geology of the Tolukuma vein system, verified the resource indicated by Newmont, and identified potential for additional mineralisation. The resource at Tolukuma Hill, designated as zone C, is a mine recoverable 432,000 t at 18.1 g/t Au & 46 g/t Ag. Mining will be by a combination of open pit and underground at a rate of 100,000 t per annum. Processing will be by SAG mill, gravity circuit and CIL plant. A diatreme breccia, localised at an intersection of structures and a relationship of gold to base metal sulphides, are indicative of a strong porphyry association. Typical epithermal features such as crustiform banded quartz and quartz pseudomorphing platy calcite are also present and locally contain lesser gold mineralisation. Pre-existing dilatant structures have acted as a host to the ore fluids, resulting in the formation of the semi-continuous Tolukuma-Gulbadi veins over a 1100 in strike. A fluid flow model suggests that mineralizing fluids were sourced from a diatreme margin and migrated laterally along dilatant structures. Bonanza gold grades are interpreted to be derived through fluid quenching in the flexure between a hanging wall split, which hosts much of the Tolukuma Hill resource, and the feeder graben structure. Thus, the relationship between the pre-mineral structural geometry and fluid upflow at the margins of a diatreme breccia, controls the ore setting.

Digital computers, by virtue of their capacity for high speed repetitive calculation at low cost, are finding increasing application to routine calcula- tions in the mining industry. In this paper techniques are shown whereby the use of computers can be extended to more complex tasks. The regular calculation of grades and tonnages of material to be extracted from specified areas of an operating open pit is a necessary part of production planning. In this paper it is shown how these calculations can be carried out by computer. thereby freeing planning staff from manual calculation. An operating open-pit mine can be described in terms of drill logs, geological ore boundaries and pit perimeters at various levels. These form the data base which must be suitable for frequent updating to incorporate new information. A suite of computer programmes is described which operates on this data base to calculate tonnages and grades of ore within extensions to the perimeters as indicated to the system by planning staff. Possible future extensions are discussed.

In this paper, it is briefly introduced that China's Ordovician limestone confined-water menaces coal mining and Ordovician water is prevented and cured to secure the safety of coal mining. The theory of "Down-Three-Zones" is presented on the basis of research and practice in recent ten years. The concept of "Down-Three-Zones" of floor water-eruption is described clearly. Finally, the principle and method of applying the theory of "Down-Three-Zones" are discussed. 1. An Introduction of Damage: China is rich in coal resources. The conditions of coal field geology are quite complicated. There is an area of two million square kilometre of Karst limestone in nine million six thousand square kilometres of territory. The resources of underground water are rather plentiful, but this menaces coal exploration. Sixty percent of coal mines in China are damaged by limestone confined-water in different scales, particularly coal mines located the Carboniferous-Permian coal fields of the Ordovician limestone distribution area of Northern China. Because there is the 500-800 metre thickness of Ordovocian limestone and the well developed Karst containsl plentiful water, Karst water can have more than 100 Kg/cm pressure. Limestone aquifers have only distances of several metres or several decade metres to coal seam, Karst water can enter the aquituge and even the coal seam, large eruptions often occur. For example, a mine of 3 million ton production capacity had an eruption of 2053 cubic metres per minute. This is the largest confined-water eruption which has brought enormous economic damage and threatened the safe production of coal mining. Therefore, the prevention and cure of Ordovician water has immense advantage to the development of the coal industry. There are several decades experience in the prevention of Ordovician water-eruption in China. The prevention of Ordovician water-eruption has two kinds of plans. 1) dewatering and depression: it refers to dewatering of aquifers as roofs of seam and depression of aquifers as floors of seam in mining areas. 2) comprehensive prevention under the condition of having water pressure in aquiters. Due to enormous water, electricity, equipment and lots of other factors, the former isn't used extensively, the latter tits to China's actual conditions and is used widely. Burwood Beach Sewage Ocean Outfall is being constructed by the Hunter District Water Board as part of an amplification scheme to eliminate pollution from adjacent bathing beaches. The outfall consists of a 93m vertical shaft, 1950m of 2.7m diameter tunnel with a series of diffuser outlets connecting the seaward end of the tunnel to the sea floor on a rock outcrop. The site of the work is in the Newcastle Coal Measures and the project is complicated by the proximity of colliery workings to tunnel alignment, although the colliery records provided valuable information on geological features. The location of the tunnel was determined to be in the Waratah Sandstone Formation immediately below the colliery workings after three different alternatives were considered. The shaft, which will be sized to suit contractor's construction methods and equipment, will be sunk through about 24.5m of alluvial material and 68.5m of rock. The tender documents were developed to allow the contractor considerable flexibility in construction method to suit available equipment. The specification also allowed great flexibility in tunnel construction method with minimum cross sectional area of 5.7m2 being the basis for a number of allowable alternative profiles ranging from circular to horseshoe.

The Ok Tedi Project has been planned as a selective mining operation since the Feasibility Study. The nature of the orebody, and the need to 'stage' the infrastructure buildup meant that initially the mill would process gol ore using a leach-CIP process, followed by parallel leaching of gold ore and flotation of copper ore, and finally all flotation of copper ore. Cutoff grades were applied to gold and copper ore of 1.0-1.3 g/t Au and 0.4-0.3% Tot. Cu. Since startup, unpredicted occurrences of sulphide copper and, to a Lesser extent, carbonaceous material, has necessitated significant additional short term drilling (other than at grade boundaries), and shift grade control in the pit to control contaminant levels. Remodelling of the orebody based on the most up to date variography and geological interpretation has had a significant impact on the reserves, and thus the whole project development strategy; necessitating the earlier processing of copper ores, and preflotation of the gold ore.This paper discusses some of these points in detail, and in particular highlights how unforseen geological occurrences coupled with processing restrictions can have significant impacts on ore reserves and the mine development schedule.

The ores of the Golden Mile exhibit considerable complexity. As a consequence, the operating company, Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM), considered it important to develop a coherent database of information describing the nature of the many ore lodes in terms of (1) rock properties and mineralogical content, including relative proportions, grain size, associations and deportment of key elements between minerals, (2) the relative behaviour of consituent minerals in various stages of processing and (3) the nature of the final products and key intermediate streams. The paper describes a sequence of metallurgical tests covering comminution, flotation, gravity concentration, leaching and calcining, carried out on three lodes of the Golden Mile. Key samples generated by the testing were subjected to comprehensive size-by-elemental assaying and QEM*SEM mineralogical determinations of sulphide and precious metal associations. Significant differences between lodes were identified, and the impact of these differences on processing is discussed.
