The fact that intrusion of water into oil wells can be prevented by treating the sand adjacent to the well seems to have been only recently recognized. Swan1 mentions the process of solidifying naphthalene in strata. R. Van A. Mills2 recommends the use of materials such as sodium silicate and sodium carbonate, which react with oil-field water to form solid plugging agents. When a well is drilled in a new field the oil sands are found essentially devoid of water (Fig. 1). Unless a completely impermeable break exists over wide areas in the field, no water is found above the lower limit of the oil zone and no oil is found below the upper limit of the water zone. After considerable oil has been taken from the well, however, it is almost universal experience that water intrusion occurs. This intrusion may be of two kinds. The water may follow a path parallel to the bedding planes of the producing formation through loose streaks in the pay sand, as shown in Fig. 2, or the water level of the field may rise and enter the well by coning (Fig. 3). Water entering from the side is called "edge water," and that coming in from the bottom is called "bottom water.'' It is rather gratifying that in the field of the manufacture of refractories, in which, as a whole, foreign practice has surpassed us, the United States stands pre-eminent in the making of silica brick. In some instances European manufacturers have refused point-blank to credit the possibility of making to such specifications as are Common with us, until the actual completed shapes were shipped for inspection. But both the manufacturer and consumer in foreign lands are now frankly learning from us, and benefiting by our advanced practice in this field, as is evidenced by the orders placed here and the efforts put forth abroad to come up to the standard of American-made material. In no metallurgical operation has the employment of silica brick spread with such leaps and bounds as in the building of plants for the carbonization of coal, particularly in the byproduct coke oven. Today, in practically all types of oven, the structure above the floor level (except the facings) is of silica, while in the recuperative and in some regenerative types, its use is extended to that portion of the oven below the floor as well. By reason of the fact that there are a number of classes of refractories of higher silica content than the usual so-called fire-clay brick, there is sometimes a misunderstanding as to the class of material referred to as "silica" brick. We here refer only to a brick having a silica content of 94 per cent. or more and made usually from quartzite rock with a small percentage of lime as a binder. The term "silica" brick is sometimes rather loosely applied to brick from highly siliceous clays, or to a quartzite refractory of mingled fire-clay and quartz rock; but such products are not considered in this discussion. : Materials The rock from which practically all high-grade silica brick are made is a true quartzite or metamorphosed sandstone, variously known as

In previous publications of the writers4-7 it has been shown that vacuum extraction of steel can be carried as close to quantitative completion as desired provided the steel is in the austenitic state and sufficiellt time is allowed. For precise work, the method claims preference because the equipmelit for holding and heating the sample can be made simple, and because crucibles, boats, and other unnecessary materials can be eliminated and the blanks thus made very small. It is well known that the evolution rate of hydrogen is smaller just above the trans. formation than immediately below, as would be expected from the increase in solubility when passing into the gamma state. Many attempts have been made to obtain analyses by extraction just below the transition, using times of approxi. mately 2 hr. while it is true that the rate of evolution drops nearly to zero under these conditions, it has repeatedly been shown that the process is incomplete since on raising the temperature into the austenitic range, evolution will be resumed, usually after a, considerable induction period. The low-temperature evolution process appears to be useful in some cases for comparative tests where the residual crror may be more or less constant between samples, For general use, however, there is no guarantee that the error caused by incomplete extraction is constant; hence, the more laborious but more reliable high-temPe'atu'e Process must be used. At high temperature, an original flash evolution, similar to that at lower temperature, is first observed. After not more than an hour, the flash subsides and cvolution settles down to a regular first-order reaction rate for which the half-life* is usually of the order of a few hours for the 5/8-in. diam cylinder at 1050°C. The regular evolution may be followed for whatever period appears justified, after which the residual gas may be estimated as equal to that which was evolved in the last observed half-life period. Tests have shown that the composition of the evolved gas does not vary greatly during the progress of evolution; therefore the residual gas may safely be taken to have the same composition as the portion col-

RbFeF3 is a transparent ferromagnet with a large faraday rotation which permits the direct observation of magnetic domain structures in bulk crystals. If the position of dislocations within the crystal were known a study of domain wall dislocation interactions would be possible. In this paper an etch pitting solution is described which gives a one-one correspondent between the etch pits and the dislocations intersecting the (100) surfaces of RbFeF3 crystals. In addition, RbFeF3 is shown to have sufficient plasticity so that known arrays of dislocaticms can be put into the crystal. It is concluded that RbFeF, is an ideal material for the investigation of domain wall dislocation interactions. THE influence of lattice defects on the motion of domain walls in ferromagnetic materials has been studied extensively both theoretically and experimentally.4 The experimental data obtained has been qualitative in nature due to the lack either of a quantitative knowledge of the magnetic domain array in the material or of the nature of the dislocation configuration in the material. At room temperature RbFeFJ has the cubic perovskite structure. It is ferromagnetic below 86°K.5,6 It is also transparent and has a large faraday rotation in the magnetic state.7 The domain structure of this material is observable in three dimensions in crystals which are millimeters in thickness.' Since RbFeF3 satisfies the requirements of having an easily visible three-dimensional magnetic domain structure, it was of interest to determine if the dislocation structure of the material could be determined and if the material was sufficiently plastic so that dislocations could be introduced into the as grown crystals. This is a report of the results of that investigation. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The crystals of RbFeFs used in this experiment were grown by a technique described elsewhere.5 In order to obtain flat strain-free surfaces, the samples were first cut to the crystal orientation desired and the surfaces were polished by employing standard metallographic techniques. The samples were then immersed in a solution of 1 to 3 g of KOH in 100 ml of water. This solution removes the damaged surface layers uniformly leaving a film on the surface of the sample. Etch pits are obtained by immersing the sample in an approximately 50-50 solution of 30 pct peroxide and concentrated acetic acid. The film formed during the KOH treatment turns deep red in color in the etching solution and flakes off the sample. The etching time required depends upon the pit size desired and

The operation at Phu Kham commenced design and construction in early 2006 and was commissioned in May 2008. This paper will examine and discuss the project from the inception of flow sheet development and equipment selection, equipment design and manufacture, construction, commissioning and ramp up to full production. The paper will touch on the strategies employed to achieve a short schedule and the efficient use of capital, but with the main emphasis on the grinding circuit. Various challenges during the early years of operation will be discussed including the effect of ore characteristics, including competency, on the performance of the grinding circuit. Actions to overcome these challenges and to enhance performance will also be discussed. Finally, current and future plans to improve the performance of the grinding circuit and the overall plant will be summarised.

The Broken Hill orebody within the leases of ZC Mines is still a major lead-silver-zinc resource after over 80 years of mining. It illustrates particular problems encountered in resource and reserve estimation in old mines. The six mined ore lenses are characterised by three features: ò complex external geometry, ò high internal grade variability, ò bimodal grade distribution. The high grade 3, 2 and 1 lenses and B lode have sharp external contacts but contain some low grade internal zones. By contrast A lode is of lower average grade and comprises an extensive but geometrically variable mineralised zone within which are numerous irregular bodies of high and medium grade ore. Geological factors are the main source of variability in reserve estimation, which historically has been conservative. For many years the geological resource tonnage has been maintained at a level sufficient to make up for extraction but at a gradually declining grade. Using a geological block cut off grade of 10% Pb + Zn the present in situ resource is 53.8 Mt grading 8% lead and 13% zinc. Using empirical cut factors a "recoverable reserve" is derived from this large geological tonnage. There is some doubt that the "recoverable reserve" is conservative enough to reflect mining reality. The most sensitive indicator of forthcoming change in total resource or insufficient drilling and development is given by changes in the tonnage and grade of possible ore from which the proved and probable categories are derived. Examples are given to show that where reserves are drill indicated, the delineation required for proved ore reserves must be enhanced to achieve final stope design. The move in recent years to greater emphasis on non entry mining and lower recovery of in situ material poses a dilemma for a mine which has practised 100% recovery for much of its past. The need for a realistic reserve assessment in current terms needs to be balanced against the fullest possible geological knowledge of the resource to cater for future technological developments.

IN 1923, when the writer began his studies in metallurgy, he came upon an article by Professor Honda on the, Equilibrium Diagram of the Iron-carbon System, 1 which made a profound impression on him. What interested him most was this sentence: "In the recent diagram of the iron-carbon system, the solidus is usually shown as a curve bending considerably downward. But it can be shown by thermodynamics that if the liquidus is straight or slightly curved, the same must also be true for the solidus. Hence, in my constitutional diagram, the lower portion of the solidus is slightly bent upward." Ever since then the writer has been interested in thermodynamics, especially chemical thermodynamics. The applications of thermo-dynamics to the metallic systems have been, in the writer's opinion, sadly neglected, although we continually use the phase rule in our study of equilibria in the liquid and solid states of metallic alloys. Many investigators, among whom may be mentioned Heycock and Neville, and s Honda and his coworkers, have applied the simple Raoult-van't Hoff law of depression of freezing point, mainly to determine the heat of fusion, but no attempt has been made to investigate the applicability of the thermo-dynamic laws of solution (as opposed to the laws of solution derived from other sources) to metallic systems" showing either limited or complete solid solutions. Perhaps the reason for this neglect is that until recently there have been so few reliable data on the solidus, which is much more difficult to determine than the liquidus. The writer has under way at the present time an investigation of a number of systems, the solidi of which have been more or less reliably determined. Recently, the writer has not only shown the valid applicability of the thermodynamic laws of solution as applied to the system antimony-bismuth but has also suggested a method of attacking problems involving complete and incomplete equilibria.2 In the present paper, the same method of approach is employed. For convenience, we shall divide this paper into two parts:

Location of Basins and Geologic Features of Occurrence: The major ground-water resources of California occur and are stored in the many large alluvium-filled valleys of the state. The deposits of Quaternary age which hold the ground water commonly are called valley fill. Meinzerl has discussed the characteristic features of this fill and showed that for western United States its distribution is concentrated chiefly in western Utah, Nevada, central Oregon, California, southern Arizona, and central New Mexico (see fig. 1). For California the principal ground-water basins are shown on fig. 2. Except for the Mojave Desert and the "Basin and Range" Valleys (fig. 2, Nos. 23 and 23A), which are not shown individually, the basins outlined on fig. 2 contain all the large reservoirs in valley fill within the state. The Sacramento and San Joaquin Valleys (fig. 2) together comprise the Great Central Valley of California, which has an area of about 18,000 square miles. The Sacramento Valley contains about 5000 square miles of valley lands, approxi- mately equal to the area of Connecticut; the San Joaquin Valley embraces about 13,000 square miles, equivalent to the areas of Massachusetts and Connecticut combined. Both the area and the ground-water use in the Central Valley is far greater than for all the other shaded alluvial basins of fig. 2 added together. Except for the Sacramento Valley, all the major ground-water basins of the state are south of Sacramento. The valley fill in these ground-water basins has been transported by streams and most of it has been laid down in alluvial fans, producing the typical alluvial-fan structure of aquifers radiating as tongues from a prismatic pile of coarse, permeable debris at the canyon mouths; these aquifers are encased down slope by poorly sorted materials consisting of a clayey matrix with imbedded pebbles and boulders, interbedded with flood-plain silt. In the deeper inland structural valleys, the alluvial deposits interfinger at depth in the valley bottoms with horizontally bedded lacustrine sand, silt, and clay. The San Joaquin Valley is a good example. In the coastal valleys exposed to the sea, such as the Los Angeles coastal plain, the alluvial fans pass coastward into lagoonal and thence to shallow marine deposits. In all these basins, the gravel is coarsest and most permeable near the apexes of the fans, but tongues or lenses of clean gravel and sand may extend for many miles down the fan. Thus, these water-bearing structures are in a position to absorb stream flow near the canyon mouths and to transmit it through the buried radiating conduits.

The investigation described in this paper deals with the development of high-temperature alloys of the Konel series over a considerable period of time at t,he Research Laboratories of the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Co. The word ''Konel" has been coined to designate a class of alloys which are essentially nickel-cobalt-iron with other elements added, usually in small quantities. Most of these alloys contain titanium, usually about 2.5 per cent. The main consideration related to strength at high temperatures but the thermionic characteristics of the alloys was also of considerable importance. It is, however, with the mechanical properties at elevated temperatures that we are herein concerned. Much attention has also been devoted to their age-hardening characteristics. There is little need to stress the utilitarian aspect of this subject, as it has been discussed frequently. Alloys exhibiting superior properties at normal or elevated temperatures rapidly find many suitable applications. There may be some question, however, as to what constitutes a "superior alloy," or an alloy that may have good service possibilities at high temperatures. The problem is complex and various means have been employed to predict the useful life that may be expected of a material. In recent years the "creep limitJ' has been used as the best means of evaluation. Such tests necessarily are prolonged and hence collection of data is very slow. In a general survey of many alloys therefore the creep test is not desirable and recourse must be had to much shorter time tests in order more rapidly to select alloys which appear to show promise. For this reason the present survey has been made using the high-temperature tensile test and a bend test developed by Howard Scott.' In the tensile test the conditions have been standardized for all tests, so that values obtained are at least comparable, one alloy with another, although the absolute values recorded merely indicate the mechanical properties at the given temperature under a definite rate of loading.

INTRODUCTION In April 1988 discussions were about to start with BP on the possibility of buying their- mineral interests, and it took a long time to arrange a deal. I will talk about RTZ without BP Minerals, look at the new RTZ with BP Minerals, discuss the outlook for metal prices, and review the problems in South Africa and develop the case against sanctions on that country. RTZAT THE END OF 1988 Late in 1987, after completing a worldwide review of our strategic thrust, we decided: 1. That the business focus would be to remain a major diversified natural resource group with interests in related industries. 2. To divest non-core and low growth businesses. 3. To develop a logical acquisition plan. 4. To emphasise organic growth and, most importantly, to enhance shareholders' wealth by capital increase and a progressive dividend policy. Subsequently, we concluded that we should sell our oil and gas business and dispose of several assets for which we saw little growth potential. The disposal programme raised some U.S.$ 1,600 million, representing a significant capital gain on our various investments. All transactions were carried out by our small Head Office staff in London, without the help of merchant banks and lawyers, and we were able to safeguard the employment of our staff in all these operations. The most interesting disposal was of our oil and gas interests. Before the 1987 strategic review, we had ambitions to develop our oil and gas interests and to become the leader in the second division of European oil companies. Our interests, which were purely in exploration and production of oil and gas, consisted of the 100% owned RTZ Oil and Gas company, and 29% of LASMO, a publicly quoted U.K. oil and gas company with extensive worldwide interests. LASMO, in turn, owned 25% of Enterprise Oil, one of the more successful of the North Sea oil exploration and production companies. Prior to the end of 1987, our intention was to acquire control of both LASMO and Enterprise. However, when we evaluated the net asset value of these two companies based on our oil price assumptions, which were pessimistic for the next five years or so, we concluded that they were both trading in the market at significant premiums. This, taken with the additional premium required for acquisition and the high cost of exploration, led us to conclude that, since funds could undoubtedly be used to better effect, we should sell our interests. Turning to the other major achievements in 1988, we commissioned, and built up to design levels in a very short period of time, the Morro do Ouro gold mine in Brazil. This mine reached its design output of 100,000 ounces of gold per year within three months of start-up, which was on time and under budget. We are now considering a possible expansion of this property. In South America, Utah International, Mitsubishi and RTZ arranged non-recourse finance, with post completion guarantees, for the giant Escondida Project in Northern Chile. Financing came from a group of banks in Japan, Germany and Finland -- the countries to which most of the concentrates will be sold -- and from the LEC. The average output of the mine for the

Cubic zinc sulfide has been grown from molten salt solutions substantially below the hexagonal-cubic phase transition of 1020°C. Crystals free of birefringence have been grown from molten lead chloride at temperatures from 500° to 800°C. Factors affecting the optical transmission and the birefringence are discussed. CUBIC zinc sulfide is of interest for electrooptic devices and as an optical coating material. However, it cannot readily be produced as large crystals which are free of birefringence. The birefringence arises from the fact that the cubic ZnS is usually grown as the high-temperature hexagonal phase and is transformed to the lower cubic phase by annealing.' This results in stacking faults, stress, and birefringence. A requirement for the growth of cubic ZnS is that it be grown below the phase transition of 1020°C.2 Crystals of cubic ZnS have been grown below 1020°C by the hydrothermal,3 flux,4 and vapor transport5 techniques. However, these all appear to have limitations in size or quality of material produced. It was felt that a new flux method might have a good chance of overcoming some of the previous problems. Mita6 reported the growth of hexagonal ZnS from molten NaCl and wilke7 reported the growth of iron sulfides from molten lead chloride solution, indicating that molten chlorides make good solvents for sulfides. An investigation of a number of possible molten chlorides as solvents showed that molten PbCl2 has an appreciable solubility for zinc sulfide and that crystals can be grown at temperatures from 500° to 800°C. EXPERIMENTAL Crystal growth was performed in open or sealed Vycor or fused silica tubes, in an argon atmosphere or vacuum. There were no deleterious effects due to using vacuum; however, a sealed essentially isothermal system must be used to prevent vapor transport mechanisms from dominating. This will be discussed later in detail. Noble metal containers were not usable as they were severely attacked by these melts. The materials used were: reagent-grade PbC12, reagent-grade ZnS, optical-coating-grade ZnS, and Irtran 2 (ZnS). Crystal growth was accomplished by both slow cooling techniques and gradient growth techniques. In the slow cooling techniques, 15 g of ZnS and 100 g of PbCl2 were used. The components were placed in the silica tube, heated at 800°C for 2 hr, and then slowly cooled (l° to 10° C per hr) to 500°C. The furnace was constructed so that the tube could be inverted, thus allowing the liquid to drain off the crystals at the end of the run. The gradient runs were made by placing the above mixtures in a silica tube at 550° to 600°c, Fig. 1. A temperature gradient was maintained such that the floating mass of undissolved sulfide was 10° to 50°C warmer than the bottom of the tube. Growth occurred on spontaneously nucleated sites at the cooler bottom. RESULTS When using high cooling rates (5° to 10°C per hr), crystals form in thin sheets perpendicular to the {111} face. Large Late Archaean greenstone belts in Western Australia, Canada and Zimbabwe, contain abundant mesothermal gold, volcanogenic massive base-metal sulphide, and komatiite-associated Ni-Cu mineralization. These greenstone belts are similar in many respects to convergent and accretionary plate margins found in the Pacific rim; modem environments which are cor-respondingly rich in gold and base-metal mineralization. The giant gold placer deposits of the Late Archaean Witwatersrand Basin (the world's largest gold producer) formed in a foreland or retro-arc basin; in a similar tectonic setting to much modem placer mineralization around the Pacific. Gold and volcanogenic base-metal sulphide mineralization are abundant in Late Archaean terranes and the Pacific rim because1. gold mineralization is a product of convergent margin tectonics, and 2. accretion in convergent margin orogens provides the best chance of preserving base-metal mineralization related to submarine volcanism.It is therefore likely that the abundance of gold and base-metal sulphide mineralization in the Late Archaean reflects the widespread growth and sta-bilization of continental crust via tectonic processes broadly similar to those operating in the present Pacific basin.

The search for oil has required, and without a doubt supplies, a tremendous amount of information on the structure, composition, physical properties, and history of sedimentary rocks. The earliest and most complete source of knowledge is the sample or core of the rock itself, the uses of which are well known. The purpose of this paper is primarily to discuss a new method for obtaining these cores, and to illustrate its use in connection with electrical logs. Most cores have been obtained through a special adaptation of rotary drilling, and the results have been remarkably good, considering the mechanical problems involved. Unfortunately, because of the time and expense, this method cannot be used for the entire length of the drill hole. Even though ingenious contrivances have been evolved in order to reduce the time spent in round trips, such as wire-line coring equipment, mechanical coring still remains too expensive to be carried out continuously. In practice, therefore, one is finally compelled to estimate the probable depths of the more interesting horizons and, allowing a wide margin of safety, to core through those sections only. It is true also that interesting results have been obtained by examining the cuttings brought to the surface by the mud circulated in the well during the process of drilling. Be that as it may, the inescapable fact remains that key horizons may be passed inadvertently, for one reason or another, while the drilling operations are being performed. The only continuous record of the formations encountered is that furnished by electrical surveys. Obviously, it would be desirable to make the electrical survey first and to take the samples from the wall of the hole according to the indications on the electrical log. In this way, it would be possible to core only the exact sections desired, eliminating the otherwise inevitable estimates as to the point at which to start coring, and thereby reducing to a minimum this expensive operation. At the same time this method would provide a maximum of useful samples. A device for taking samples of the formation from the walls of a hole therefore offers the possibility of recovering cores from zones otherwise lost as a source of this type of information. This paper describes an investigation on the surface properties and mechanisms involved in the agglomeration of iron ore. For this purpose, an organic binder (carboxyl-methyl-cellulose (CMC)) was used in substitution of bentonite, the classic binder in iron ore concentrate agglomeration. Recently, a renewed interest of the iron ore producers in Brazil to replace bentonite for an organic binder, because of the economy that can be achieved in the, blast furnace operation. These savings are mainly due to the lower aluminum silicate addition which decreases slag volume and the improved pellet metallurgical properties which have the potential for lowering hot-metal production costs. Also organic binders are effective at lower addition levels, which results in lower storage and transportation costs. It is very important in Brazil because of the vast geographical area since transportation is made mainly by truck. Another advantage of organic binders is that they have low ash contents, and therefore most of the binders bum. off during the pellet firing operation. Previous studies have demonstrated the possibilities of the use of CIVIC, but in addition to its high cost, the pellets presented improper behavior at high temperatures or when prepared with high moisture levels. In the investigation here described, these problems have been solved through the addition of other reagents to CMC.

This paper describes the use of the sand and plaster physical modelling technique to investigate the deformation around mine roadways using a variety of support methods in a particular form of stress field. The characteristics and conditions of coal measures rock were considered prior to the preparation of the models and the insertion of support The investigation has clearly shown how floor lift, roof failure and sidewall movements of mine roadways in laminated weak rock conditions gradually develops as a result of the increase in the stress and, also, how it is related to the level of support used.

Studies such as the investigations into the solubility of gases in crude oil under various conditions, which have been carried on during the past three or four years, are very interesting from an academic point of view, but this consideration alone is hardly sufficient to warrant the large contributions from the industry necessary to maintain them. Some definite benefit to the industry as a whole should be forthcoming. The purpose of this paper is to direct the attention of company engineers, and company executives, to some of the ways in which the information gained from these studies can be made directly profitable. This work has two principal economic aspects. One affects the investment budget, and through it the financial requirements of the companies. The other affects operations, and through this course is reflected in current earnings. It will be shown that, as a direct result of the investigations into gas solubility, undertaken in the recent past by various investigators, it is now possible: 1. To determine more accurately the amount of reservoir oil originally present. 2. To obtain closer control on operating conditions, to effect more economical recovery. 3. To predict earlier and more dependably when and how much surface lifting equipment will be needed. 4. To reduce, or entirely avoid the very large investment in gasoline recovery equipment now frequently found necessary. 5. To control the gravity of the pipe-line oil so as to secure the greatest possible revenue from the products of the well. 6. To effect the recovery of a large amount of gasoline now wasted while the practicability of a gasoline recovery system is being decided. 7. To plan operations, by comparison with the history of old properties operated without this new information, so as to avoid the mistakes of ignorance made in the past. These points will be discussed in the following pages, though not necessarily in the order stated. There is so much overlapping of the points themselves, and of the data from which they have been drawn as conclusions, that to treat them in any particular order would require

The design of mine ventilation systems for the BHP Steel Division Collieries is based on the acquisition of ventilation survey data for the establishment of a realistic computer net- work model. The branches which form the net- work for the computer models are calculated from a range of resistance factors incorporat- ing both a frictional and shock loss component. Since shock losses can account for up to 30 per cent of the total energy losses in mine airways the use of friction factors alone without accounting for shock losses will result in the choosing of an insufficiently performing fan. Published tables of friction factors have in- variably been taken from metalliferous or single entry studies and consequently are not reliable for Australia's mining conditions where multiple entries with regularly spaced cut-throughs are the normal practice. Typical resistance factors for roadways of rectangular cross-section 5.5 m x 2.0 m, with coal sides, have been found to vary from 0.11 Ns2/m8/km where no timber supports are used, to 0.98 Ns2/m8/km where double centre legging together with wooden chocks is used. In addition to the range of resistance factors due to varying support methods, the nature of use for a roadway is very significant because of the condition of repair and upkeep maintained.

The correlation of property changes during precipitation with structure has progressed, sometimes rapidly but other times more slowly, since the fundamental discovery of Merica, waltenberg and Scott.1 The predominent factor that hampered the progress has been limitations imposed by the various detection methods. Refiments in x ray diffraction tech-niques and in metallographic methods, which have been extended by the electron microscope, have contributed new information within the last few years. These permit an extension of the theory as proposed by Mehl and Jetter in 1940'2 Now that a sufficient number of alloys has been investigated to establish a general mechanism of the precipitation process, a correlation of the facts into a generally applicable theory of age-hardening is both warranted and desirable. The purpose of the paper is to provide an orderly correlation of the phenomenological facts of precipitation hardening. Speculation 011 mechanism of hardening will be confined to that consistent with existing theories of hardening, Age-hardening accompanies the formation of a new structure, the precipitate, as provided by a11 alloy system ill which solid solubility decreases with decreasing temperature. Upon this premise alone all such systems would be expected to include age-hardenable alloys. Alas, this is not always the case. Few attempts have been made to explain the variable degree of age-hardening among different alloys or to explain the influence of small alloying additions upon the hardening. Lungfish and crayfish inhabit continental ecosystems similar to those of their ancient counterparts in the Permian (lungfish) and Triassic (crayfish) Periods, exhibiting similar burrowing behaviors to live, breed, and escape desiccation. Identification of their burrows in the geologic record when body fossils are absent has relied on the overall gross morphology of the burrows and the process of elimination. A method of burrow identification has been developed by evaluating burrow structures in an attempt to designate architectural and surficial burrow morphologies that uniquely reflect the distinctive burrowing mechanism of a particular organism. The information from this method defines the burrowing signatures of an organism, enabling the differentiation of their burrows even when fossil evidence is lacking.The lungfish constructed simple, vertical burrows with bulbous terminations. The burrow walls exhibit fine, horizontal to sub-horizontal striae and vertical to sub-vertical striae near the top of the bulbous terminus, reflecting a burrowing style similar to modern burrowing lungfish. The crayfish constructed simple, vertical burrows to complex burrows with multiple branching and chamber development. The burrow surface ornamentations exhibit horizontal to sub-horizontal ridges, vertical to sub-vertical groupings of scratches, mud- and lag-liners, knobby and hummocky textures, and body impressions, which reflect the burrowing mechanism of the crayfish.
