BHP-Utah Coal Limited's Peak Downs Mine is located in Cen- tral Queensland, approximately 200 km south west of Mackay. The annual raw coal production of the mine is over 8 million tpa, requiring the removal of about 40 million cubic metres of prime overburden. This is achieved through the use of five large draglines. The large depths of overburden (up to 55 metres) encountered over half the strike length of the mine enables cast blasting to be carried out in conjunction with draglines employ- ing the chopping method of digging. The objective of cast blast- ing is to use explosive energy to move as much material directly into spoil as possible. The additional costs of drilling and blast- ing are offset by reducing dragline rehandle. Two factors which are of primary importance to the design of cast blasts are initiation control and material velocity. High speed motion picture photography is a powerful diagnostic tool to quantify these aspects of blasting (Winzer, Montenyohl and Ritter, 1979; Chiappetta et al., 1983; Anon., 1983). The objec- tives of such analysis are to: 1. Determine the burden velocity, 2. Determine the time to initial movement (that is, the inter- val between a face hole firing and the initial movement of the burden), 3. Check the accuracy of the initiation sequence. BHP Central Research Laboratories (CRL) and Peak Downs Mine monitored a cast blast in the mine's Winchester Pit on 18 August, 1988. The objectives of this exercise were to: 1. Quantify current cast blast performance, providing a base case for comparison with modified blast design. 2. Compare two orientations of angled holes within the blast. 3. Assess the effectiveness of cast blasting utilising an air-deck. 4. Check blast timing with respect to burden movement times.

Underground mining in the West Moreton coal field started in the 1870's. Subsidence related to coal mining activities is an ongoing problem facing planners and developers in the Ipswich area in South Eastern Queensland. The history of coal mining in the area over the last 110 years has left the legacy of periodic surface instability in several areas. In general, modern engineering analysis with current mining methods combine to create predicatable analysis of surface stability and movement. Where old workings using several variations of the bord and pillar system are affected by current activity, the predictibility of the surface movement is greatly reduced. Geological complexities further complicate the analysis. Mining and the related dewatering affects the stresses on pillars in old workings. This is caused by reducing buoyancy effects caused by changes in the water levels in old workings. Of particular relevance is the depth of workings and strength of the coal and overburden. The type of subsidence affecting the surface can range from localised pillar failure, to roof failure and potholing and the likelihood of the particular form of subsidence can be assessed from studying the workings in relation to the stratigraphy and structure of the coal measure Formations.

Mill relining is a major contributor to overall plant downtime. Reducing the number of mill liner pieces removed from and replaced in the mill has a direct impact on the overall reline time and in turn, mill availability. To improve the mill availability of Ridgeway Operations' 32 foot SAG mill, a number of initiatives were implemented in terms of liner design. These included the conversion of the shell from 40 to 30 rows, reducing the number of pieces from 80 to 60 each shell reline and reducing the number of pieces from 48 to 32 per feed end reline. In addition, modifications were made to the discharge end of the mill to extend the life of the outer pulp lifter and discharge cone, thereby reducing the frequency of change out. The standard radial outer pulp lifter was converted to an angled design. The discharge cone was converted to the BullnoseTM design supplied by Bradken. This paper discusses the design changes made and the expected benefits to the Ridgeway Operations in terms of mill availability improvements.

Design and selection of support systems for longwall faces call for in-depth knowledge of strata mechanics and in particular of strata-support interactions. The paper presents the results of field investigations and analysis of a difficult-to-cave roof using powered supports under a massive dolerite sill in Central India using a state-of-the-art datalogger system. The mechanised longwall face was equipped with 4/680 tons chockshields operated on the IFS mode using a 300 K W DERD shearer. The datalogger system was capable of storing data simultaneously in 32 channels. The paper describes the monitoring system and the monitoring programme. The system provided useful information on support behaviour, build-up of leg pressures and face convergence during an intense dynamic periodic weighting phenomenon which destroyed the integrity of almost half of the face supports. At this point, the face had advanced by about 197 metres from the barrier. The paper outlines a post-mortem analysis of this dynamic event and provides a critical evaluation of the data collected for understanding strata support interaction and the behaviour of the massive sill in the overburden.

The principle underlying the majority of magnetic intensity variometers is a comparison of the force to be measured with another force of known magnitude. The known force may be (a) of a magnetic nature, such as magnetic fields produced by magnets or coils, or (b) of a mechanical nature, such as (1) the elastic forces of wires, or (2) the force of gravity, such as employed in bifilar magnetometers and magnetic balances. In instruments of such type, usually a magnetic system is employed, free to move about either a horizontal or vertical axis, on some sort of a suspension. If the earth's magnetic field alone were present, such a system would adjust itself into the direction of the field or that of its components. Owing to the simultaneous action of the comparison force, however, the magnetic needle assumes a position that differs from the direction of the magnetic force; for all such instruments, the angle of deflection is given by tan = FIX, where F is the known and X the unknown earth magnetic force component. In other words, the magnetic system merely serves as an "indicator" for the position of balance of the two forces. Considering the matter from this point of view, it is not immediately obvious why the temperature of such a magnetic system should modify the results. In magnetic instruments, we may distinguish two different effects of temperature: (1) a magnetic effect and (2) a mechanical effect. The first is due to the fact that the magnetic moment of a magnet drops with an increase in temperature. This drop is characterized by the temperature coefficient of the magnetic moment (see equation 1). The second effect is due to the change in the torsion of suspension wires with temperature or to the expansion of lever arms of masses acting on magnetic balances.

The yttrium-manganese system has been investigated by thermal, metallographic, and X-ray diffraction methods. There are three intermetallic compounds present: YMn2 which melts congruently, YMn4, which undergoes syntectic decomposition, and YMn,, which undergoes peritectic decomposition. The compound YMn4 is ferromagnetic at room temperature with a Curie temperature of 214°C. There are eutectics at 25.2, 60.9, and 82.0 wt pct Mn which melt at 878°, 1100°, and 1075°C, respectively. Crys-tallographic data are given for YMn4, and YMn12 . The terminal solid solubilities are low. In a general program of study of yttrium metal in this laboratory some alloy systems of this metal with elements of the first transition period have been examined. This work was originally instigated by experiences in cladding yttrium with jackets of some protective metals such as Inconel for high-temperature service in air.' In some cases a low-melting phase was observed to form between the Inconel and the yttrium resulting in failure of the samples. In characterizing this reaction, a survey was made of the systems of yttrium with chromium, manganese, iron and nickel,, and it was found that a eutectic was formed between these metals and yttrium on the yttrium-rich side of the system. This present study of the Y-Mn system was carried out to examine in more detail the alloying nature of yttrium, and to correlate trends that have been observed in previous related studies. It was observed by Voge13 that in the systems of lanthanum, cerium, and praseodymium with each of the metals in the first transition series, the tendency to form compounds diminished in the order nickel, cobalt, and iron while no compounds were formed with manganese, chromium, or titanium. Beaudry and Daane4 observed a similar behavior in the systems of yttrium with some members of the first transition series except that the tendency for compound formation was greater. Both the Y-Ti5 and Y-Cra systems consist of simple eutectics, while in the Y-Fe,7 Y-CO, and Y-Ni4 systems, there are four, eight, and nine compounds, respectively. In addition to the above trends, the similar atomic radii and electronegativities of yttrium and thorium invite a comparison between their alloying behaviors with a common element such as manganese. In crys- tallographic studies, Florio et al.' have identified three intermediate phases in this system which are ThMn2, Th6Mn23, and ThMn,,. Gschneidner and Waber10 have examined published information on alloy systems of the rare-earth metals and have correlated this information with current alloying theory. From their study, they predicted that the Y-Mn system would contain one intermetallic compound. On the basis of this prediction, the trend in the alloying behavior of yttrium with the elements of the first transition series and the alloying behavior of thorium with manganese, one might expect from one to three intermetallic compounds to form in the Y-Mn system. A consideration of Hume-Rothery's rules of alloying based on size-factor, electronegativity, and valency suggested a small terminal solubility and possible compound formation. The present study was undertaken to confirm these predictions of low terminal solid solubility and compound formation and to establish the general alloying behavior of yttrium with manganese. EXPERIMENTAL Materials. The manganese used in this investigation was obtained from the Foote Mineral Co. as electrolytic plates of 99.9 pct stated purity; the yttrium metal was prepared in this laboratory. Table I gives the analyses of these materials. For the solubility studies at the yttrium-rich end of the alloy system, distilled yttrium, whose major impurity was 200 ppm Ti, was used. Preparation of Alloys. The alloys were formed by comelting the two metals in an are-melting furnace under an atmosphere of argon. The buttons thus formed were inverted and remelted three to five times to promote homogeneity. Due to the high vapor pressure of manganese, it was assumed that the weight lost during are-melting was all manganese. Fine grinding in an air-swept ball mill working in closed circuit with a forced vortex air classifier has been investigated first in continuous laboratory and then in industrial scale. Results from the laboratory circuit have shown significant influence of mill load (powder filling) on the capacity of the circuit. In laboratory scale the mill load was measured and controlled by a weighing platform placed under the complete mill set-up. The mill load of the industrial air-swept ball mill has till now been controlled by measuring the power consumption of the mill motor. Thus, it was necessary to operate far from the range of optimal mill filling. To improve the circuit performance, alternative ways of mill load measurement were investigated. An important factor was investment cost, as many fine grinding mills operate in relatively small circuits that do not wan-ant large investment. In this case the task was accomplished by using a piezoelectric strain transducer, which detected strain changes in the mill shell. It was installed in the midpoint of the shell, where the highest deformation was obtained. As the transducer was on the top position, it indicated compression, and on the bottom position it measured tension. By taking the difference between the readings, it was possible to calculate total strain variations, directly proportional to the mill load. The signal from the transducer was sent to a control room via a cordless infrared communication system, employing a microprocessor control card, which could further regulate other operating parameters of the circuit according to the software model. The installation required very low investment cost and provided simplicity of application as well as stability and reliability of characteristics under severe industrial condition. The measurement system made it possible to optimise the mill load and thus increase the production from 3.2 to 3.7 dh (15 per cent), and stabilise the circuit operation.

A dynamic model of a dense medium circuit has been developed and tested against plant data. The model shows the response of the circuit to both controlled (changes in specific gravity set point or changes in circuit coal feed rate) and uncontrolled changes (changes in raw coal moisture, loss of raw coal feed) in operating conditions. The model is built up from dynamic models of the individual sumps, pumps, pipes, splitters, magnetic separators and automatic controllers in the circuit. The model can be used for design of automatic control loops and for investigation of possible process modifications such as changes in water addition points. This paper describes the model construction, the testing of the model against actual plant data and gives some examples of its use in investigating plant response to changes in operating conditions.

PROJECT OVERVIEW As the sun-bronzed San Diego students strolled casually to class, mining crews from Atkinson Construction were working only 9 meters below the surface. The330 meter long, 11.3 meter diameter squat ellipse NATM tunnel is part of the9.3 kilometer Mission Valley East Extension Light Rail Transit (MVE-LRT) being constructed for the San Diego Metropolitan Transit Development Board (MTDB). The SDSU segment of the MVE-LRT was awarded to the Clark Construction Group, the parent company of Atkinson Construction for $82.7 million. URS CORP was the prime designer and Hatch Mott MacDonald performed the NATM tunnel design. The construction managers were Washington Infrastructure Services with Underground Construction Managers, EPC Consultants, and ILF Consultants. A NATM tunnel design was chosen as the most cost-effective way to minimize disruption of the university activities. The tunnel passes close to several buildings and directly below access roads, tennis courts and a baseball field. The NATM method of conventional mining uses shotcrete for ground support often reinforced with steel orplastic fibers, welded wire mesh and lattice girders. The tunnel runs from a cut and cover box up a 4.2% grade in a 217 meter radius left-hand curve with several spirals and ends at the underground station 330 meters away. The depth of cover varies from 16 meters near the west portal to nine meters at the station. The design called for a two-pass system with a primary lining of 300 mm shotcrete with lattice girders at 1 m centers and two layers of welded wire mesh. The lattice girders are used primarily for profile control and are not considered a structural element. The top heading was designed to be excavated in one of three excavation sequences depending on ground conditions and depth of cover. The room-temperature Knoop hardness of single -crystal titanium diboride has been determined. Variations in microhardness have been correlated with orientation and structural imperfections in the crystals. Maximum differences in hardness values of 750 kg per sq mm with respect to orientation and 450 kg per sq mm with respect to substructure were found. The effects of etchants, load on indenter, and degvee of cracking of indentation were studied. The average hardness was determined as 2800 kg per sq mm on the as-grown crystals. Annealing increased the average hardness to 3375 kg per sq mm. ThE microhardness of polycrystalline titanium diboride approximating the stoichiometric composition TiB, has been studied by several investigators. The values for the Knoop hardness number range from 2710 kg per sq mm (Khn = 2710 kg per sq mm) to 3400 kg per sq mm.'-4 Samsonov et al.' reported a Vickers hardness number of 3400 kg per sq mm (Vhn = 3400 kg per sq mm) at 120-g loads for a 98 pct Ti + B material of 96 pct theoretical density. Recently Dunegan measured the Vickers hardness and obtained 2060 kg per sq mm with a 10-g load (Vhnlo = 2060 kg per sq mm), 1425 kg per sq mm for Vhnloo, and 1320 kg per sq mm for Vhnlooo. We have obtained a Khnloo = 3000 * 350 kg per sq mm for hot-pressed polycrystalline TiB2 that was 99.1 pct Ti + B and 96.6 pct of theoretical density. The present investigation has been made on single-crystal titanium diboride boules, and is believed to be the first such study on TiB, crystals of known orientation. EXPERIMENTAL The single crystals were prepared by a Verneuil-type process using an electric arc by the Linde Division of Union Carbide Corp. The largest specimens were 6 mm in diameter by 12 mm long. The crystals were of theoretical density (4.50 g per cm3) with a Ti + B content of 99.8 pct. The major impurities present were: 0.03 pct (by weight) 0, 0.06 pct C, 0.01 pct Si, 0.05 pct Fe, 0.01 pct Cr, and 0.01 pct Ni. The crystals were boron-rich, the average boron content being 31.S7 wt pct (stoichiometric value is 31.12 wt pct), and titanium-poor, the average titanium content being 68.2 wt pct (stoichiometric value is 68.88 wt pct). Titanium was determined gravimetrically by cupferron precipitation and boron by titration of H3B03 from a NaOH-fused specimen after removal of titanium with BaC03. The outer edge of the boule accounted for some of the excess boron. An electron-microprobe analysis showed that the titanium content increased from 60.0 wt pct at the edge to 68.5 wt pct at D, ~ 1000 p, where D, = distance from outer edge (see Fig. 5). X-ray measurements indicate that the boules are single crystals with considerable substructure. Upon etching this structure is seen in the form of a Widmanstatten-type rhombohedral line pattern in the basal (c) plane and a parallel "lines" pattern in the prism (a) planes. A typical WidmanstHtten-type pattern is seen in in Fig. 1. Electron microscopy reveals that the lines are less than 1 p across, which does not allow direct electron probe or microfocus X-ray determination of their composition. The identity of the second phase has not been established. It might be a higher boride or a nonstoichiometric TiB2. On annealing above 2200°C the precipitate is dispersed and dissolves in the matrix. The best etchants found were HF/HNO/HO, KF(CN)$NOH/HO (Murakami's Etch), and A large number of other etchants were previously Studied. The acidic etchant produced an acicular or "needles" pattern in the (a) planes which is an etchant effect on the "lines" pattern.

THERE has been probably no improvement introduced into the manufacture of iron which created more surprise in the minds of practical smelters and of scientific men than Neilson's discovery of the hot blast. In 1829, Messrs. Dunlop & Co. consumed at the Clyde Works, near Glasgow, nearly 7 3/4 tons of coal to make a ton of pig iron, of which about 20 cwts. was employed under the boilers of the blowing engines, leaving nearly 7 tons for the consumption of the furnace itself. In the year 1833, by heating the air to 612° F. (322° C.), they reduced the 7 3/4 tons to 3 tons by the mere burning of 8 cwts. of coal in the apparatus for raising the blast to this temperature. The statement just given is strictly true in a commercial sense, but when we come to consider the question as one of physical science, it is necessary to eliminate some of the conditions which conduced to so extraordinary a result. Anterior to Neilson's time the fuel employed in smelting iron was coke, and it was supposed at that period, erroneously, however, that coal in its raw state, when burned with cold air, was totally unfit for the purpose in question. This mineral, as it was obtained from the Lanarkshire coal-field, contained about 35 per cent. of volatile matter, but the process of charring it was performed in so unskilful a manner that instead of receiving 88 cwts. of coke from 135 cwts. of coal, 60 cwts. only was the product of the operation. Again, the reduced consumption of carbon in the furnace itself was accompanied by a corresponding diminution of blast, and this was followed by an economy of half a ton in engine coal. After making a proper allowance, however, for all these collateral circumstances, we are within the mark when we admit that in actual coke, which is really the form the fuel has to assume before it is burnt in the blast-furnace, not less than 30 cwts. was saved by heating the blast to 615° F. (322° C.). This unexpected economy, be it remembered, was obtained by the combustion of the 8 cwts. of coal, somewhat wastefully applied in the hot-air apparatus. AN increased demand for information in regard to the effect of gaseous elements in steel has accompanied the recognition of the importance of grain size. Attempts to correlate grain-size characteristics with gas con-tent, particularly oxygen in solution or in the form of included metallic oxides, have not been universally successful. Certain definite effects of dissolved gases are recognized; specifically, the role of hydrogen in causing internal cracks or "flakes" and that of nitrogen in preventing excessive grain growth of ferritic chromium steels. When irregular behavior or properties are found in a well-known steel and no definite cause for the abnormality may be assigned on the basis of chemical and metallographic tests, dissolved gases are frequently blamed as the culprits. The solubilities of hydrogen1 and nitrogen2 in pure liquid iron are known but of the ternary systems, iron-alloying element-gas, only the Fe-Si-N3 and Fe-Cr-N systems have received attention and here the study was confined to liquid alloys. Krivobok4 published a curve show-ing the solubility of nitrogen in liquid Fe-Cr alloys but gave no informa-tion on the experimental procedure employed. The considerable experimental work reported on the Cr-N binary alloys has been reviewed by Hansen.5 It is generally agreed that the nitride CrN is a stable phase although the existence of nitrides within limited temperature ranges of stability, viz., Cr3N2 and Cr2N, has been disputed, Adcock6 and others7 have reported a eutectic between Cr and CrN at 1580°C., although the supporting evidence is not complete.

About 45% of the contaminated sites are dealing with heavy metal problems. Metals are spread in the environment by mining activities, surface treatment and non ferrous processing. As heavy metals can not be degraded, removal or immobilization (leading to bioavailability reduction) are the only risk reducing measures that exist. The currently best available technique for remediation of heavy metal contaminated groundwater is to pump the contaminated water and to treat it in a wastewater treatment plant installed on the surface. Next to this often used, but expensive, pump and treat technologies, heavy metals can be immobilized by inducing sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) to transform the sulfates, that are very often present in the same groundwater (due to the metal mining or processing activities), into sulfides. These sulfides will precipitate the metals as insoluble metal sulfides. At the moment several studies have demonstrated the feasibility of this In Situ Bioprecipitation Process (ISBP) for the removal of heavy metals from ground-water as well at lab scale (batch and column tests) as at field scale. However, some questions arise concerning the continuation of the process, the efficiency and the sustainability of the precipitates. The presented study will try to answer these questions. The study is based on more than 10 different studies, all done by the same authors, on different groundwaters and aquifer samples. The presentation will give an overview of the guidelines necessary for a correct and successful bioprecipitation process with stable metal sulfide precipitates. An important question in the ISBP is related to the sustainability of the heavy metal precipitates. It could be observed that the interruption in the carbon source delivery also stopped the in situ bioprecipitation process. Depending on the metal also some release from the precipitate could be observed. It was shown that release can occur with Co and Ni. Aquifers, on which the metals precipitated during the ISBP, were treated in a sequential extraction process under an-aerobic and aerobic conditions. It could be shown that especially under the anaerobic conditions the Zn and Cd precipitates changed from the leachable and the exchangeable fraction to the organic or Fe-Mn fraction (i.e. from the unstable to the stable fraction). The same could be observed for Co and Ni but still some fraction was present under a more available form. On the other hand it could be shown that large differences were observed concerning the heavy metal speciation on the aquifer in function of the used carbon source during the ISBP. The molasses treated systems showed a much more available heavy metal fraction on the aquifer compared to the lactate or HRC® treated groundwater. The different speciation forms based on the use of different carbon sources will be discussed in detail. It will pay attention to the influence of the carbon source, the efficiency of the induction of the bioprecipitation process, the influence on the competence between sulfate reducers and methanogenic bacteria and the influence of low pH on the ISBP. It seems that acetate, which is also a degradation product of fermentation of some carbon sources, can inhibit some sulfate reducers. Also the relation between slow release compounds and immediately available compounds will be explained. Finally a pilot study will be presented showing the problems that can be encountered during this process. Focus will be put on the induction of the process, the keeping on of the process and the follow up of the process by the installation of in situ mesocosm socks. These results will allow the correct implementation of the ISBP with an eye on longevity and sustainability of the process and present the ISBP as a much more sustainable alternative to the pump and treat technology as measure for heavy metals contaminated groundwaters.

A small glass walled pot grate has been used to simulate drying of iron ore pellets in a travelling grate plant. This equipment has enabled the effect of decreasing grind and de- creasing pellet bulk density on plant production to be quantitatively predicted. These predic- tions are compared with plant experience. The use of the laboratory simulator in comparing the effect of various additives on plant production is also described and substantial improvements in both the goethite and free-water drying periods are predicted.

Measurements of surface magnetic field noise were made at various locations over the Geneva Coal Mine near Price, Utah, on June 12, 1973. The locations selected were on the surface over emergency locator beacons underground at depths between 350 meters (1150 ft .) and 488 meters (1600 ft .) . The surface terrain where these measurements were made was mountainous, and access was difficult. There were no power lines within several miles, and the weather was clear; therefore, the magnetic noise levels were about as low as will normally occur. Results of measurements of distant sferics indicate rather sharp cutoff frequencies below which broad- band, impulsive noise is attenuated. The mechanism of propagation for this noise above the daytime cutoff frequency of 3500 Hz and the nighttime cutoff frequency of 1700 Hz is deduced to be a waveguide formed by the D or E layers of ionosphere as an upper plane and the earth as a lower plane. The measurement systems used are similar to those used earlier. The technique is to record broadband, analog signals, digitize the data, and use a fast- Fourier transform to obtain spectral plots. This tech- nique is novel in that it can measure simultaneously all magnetic field energy within a limited portion of the spectrum for a limited time, and, after processing, reproduce the events occurring in that time interval in great detail .

Each received recognition at the Institute Awards Luncheon Monday, June 30, 1997. Each state vice president served as host for the collegiate winner and his firm provided travel and hotel expenses. In addition to receiving a plaque from the Scholarship Chairman, Alan Czarnowsky, each winner receives $1,000 tuition credit for the coming academic year, as well as transportation, hotel lodging and meals at convention as guests of the Institute. Because this is a continuing award, the winners from the previous year also receive a $1,000 tuition credit in their senior year if recommended by the dean of the college or university and if they remain full time students. A resident from each of the eight RMCMI member states is selected from among Board approved institutions. Criteria for these awards made annually is that the recipient (1) Is a full time sophomore student who will use the tuition credit during the junior year. (2) Be both a U.S. citizen and a resident of the member state. (3) Maintain good academic standing, be pursuing a degree in a mining related field and have an expressed interest in western coal as a possible career path. The scholarship program includes curricula other than in the mining departments, but in engineering disciplines, such as geology, mineral processing and metallurgy. Contributions to this worthy project are tax deductible to each individual RMCMI member or his firm. Through annual donations of $100 or more, the Patrons of the Institute fund the scholarship program. A listing of current donors is found elsewhere in this book. Travis Naugle Montana Tech - Butte, Montana Travis, the son of Chelsea and David Naugle of Tempe, Arizona is a student at Montana Tech. He is well-rounded with studies, various athletic endeavors, campus D.J. position, and as a residence officer. He is now the Public Relations Director for KMSM-FM radio in Butte, MT. A Tempe High School graduate, Travis plans to work in coal extraction once he receives his Mining Engineering degree. [ ] COLORADO WINNER Suzanne Maddux Colorado State University - Fort Collins, Colorado Suzanne, the daughter of Janet Maddux of Arroyo Grande, CA and Lelen Maddux of Santa Margarita, CA, is the first scholarship recipient at Colorado State University. She is pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering. Since 1992 she has been working with TerraMatrix Inc. in Steamboat Springs and Fort Collins, Colorado which has offered her insight to the western mining industry. She has volunteered with Larimer County Partner (a big sister program) and has continued to be involved in many athletic endeavors.

PREPARATION CONTROL IN UNDERGROUND MINING Selective Mining According to district Depending upon the particular geographic loca- tion or seam characteristics, modern raw coal preparation practices can be used to obtain improved product quality and uniformity. Nevertheless, certain coal markets may require only marginal quality while others may require very high quality, and these objectives may be sought by commencing the preparation of coal underground at the "working face." Under- ground preparation involves choosing those portions of the seam which can be cleaned to satisfy predetermined market requirements involving ( 1 ) maintenance of uniformity in chemical quality, (2) elimination of removable impurities, (3) control of sizes and size ratios, and (4) control of moisture. The methods employed to attain these objectives vary widely with the (1 ) seam under development, (2) mining equipment available, and (3) changing trends in the consuming markets. When a mining property is opened and development progresses from one section to another, the (1) petrography of the coal in the seam does not remain uniform, (2) character of roof and floor are subject to change, and (3) character and prevalence of mineral impurities are subject to considerable variation. The quality of coal shipped to market from any mine depends upon intelligent foresight, planning, execution, and supervision. Mining becomes a highly technical art. The quality of coal as determined by chemical and petrographic analysis is without question one of the most important considerations in the development and life of any coal-mining property. Variations in such proper- ties as volatile matter, ash, sulfur, Btu content, and petrography are of considerable interest, and to a limited extent so are such properties as phosphorous content, free swelling index, plasticity, hardness, pressure formation during coking, and ash composition. The maximum and minimum specifications of these characteristics as established by competitive market conditions place definite limits on the marketability of a coal.
