In order to predict the influence of blasting on slopes, one must first understand the action of explosives, the manner in which rock is broken or displaced, and how seismic waves are transmitted, and the nature of these seismic waves. In this paper, the author describes the action of high explosives on rock masses, beginning at the source of the explosion, extending through the zone of rupture to a distance where only elastic waves of low energy persist. The paper describes the relationships between explosives charge quantities and distances, including the character and intensity of the seismic waves in various types of terrain. In looking at the analysis of slopes subjected to seismic waves, it has been common practice to assume a simplified model in which the anticipated acceleration is applied horizontally to the slope as an equivalent static force, or a model in which there is a rigid base subjected to mechanical shaking. Such models do not accurately portray blasting activity taking place within or near the slope in question. In dealing with blasting effects, it is important to under- stand seismic wave types, wave lengths, attenuation and transmission paths, as well as vibration intensity. In most cases, those slopes that are the least stable under static loading will also be the least stable under dynamic loading, although there may be rare exceptions. Thus, the more that is known about a slope statically, the better will be the assessment of it dynamically.

THE decomposition of austenite in steels, because of its immense practical importance, has been subjected to extensive study in recent years from the point of view of the mechanism of the process.1-3 Although much information has been acquired a number of questions, principally of theoretical interest, remain. One is that of the atomic-crystallographic mechanism by which each of the various reaction products forms. The isothermal reaction products of the eutectoid decomposition in plain carbon steels (to which this study is restricted) have conveniently been classified in three general groupings-pearlite, bainite, and martensite. Of these several products, pearlite and martensite have been studied extensively, but bainite has received only scant attention. As a result, the mechanism of the formation of pearlite and that of martensite are now fairly well understood while a great deal of uncertainty exists regarding bainite. PEARLITE Pearlite forms from austenite by the precipitation of alternate platelets of cementite and ferrite, which grow into the austenite matrix.2-5 The rate of reaction may be described in terms of a rate of nucleation and a rate of growth 2 3 Mehl and Smiths have attempted to determine the lattice relationships existing between the ferrite in pearlite and the parent austenite. Using a pole-figure method of analysis, it was found that a limited number of ferrite orientations resulted from the decomposition of a single grain of austenite; it was not possible,[ ]decide between two assumed ideal relationships, both of which appeared to account for the experimentally determined pole figure. It was definitely shown, however, that the relationship obtaining was quite different from that determined for the proeutectoid separation of ferrite.7 No attempt was made to determine the habit plane (matrix plane to which the precipitate lies parallel) of the pearlite lamellae. Belaiew8 earlier had stated that the number of directions assumed by the pearlite lamellae in a single grain of austenite was 12 (no details were given) and concluded wrongly, as Mehl and Smith' have pointed out, that the lamellae delineate the {210} planes of ferrite.* MARTENSITE It is known that martensite is a transitional constituent of body-centered tetrag-

Metallurgists handling lead and zinc ores have long been familiar with the spectrograph as a routine analytical tool, as its earliest regular use by American industry was in controlling impurities of zinc metal and its alloys. This application has been extended to other metal industries on an extensive scale, accompanied by refinements of procedure to such an extent that a large part of some metals produced, especially magnesium, aluminum and steel, are checked only by spectrographic methods for conformity to specifications. The spectrographic analysis of ores and other poorly conducting powdered solids presents difficulties not encountered with metallic samples, which can be arced or sparked as self-electrodes or can be readily dissolved, so that their solutions can be analyzed, as in the American Society for Testing Materials standard methods for zinc and zinc-base alloys. Spectra of powdered solid samples can be prepared by using carbon electrodes provided with a crater of suitable size, into which the sample is packed. Ore samples and many other powdered solid materials usually analyzed in the chemical and metallurgical laboratory are more complex and varied in composition than samples of metals produced in large tonnages. 'lore preliminary work therefore is usually necessary in devising a spectrographic method for analyzing a given type of powdered sample than for analyzing metal samples, in order to use that method with confidence. The howledge that the standard samples and unknowns produce equivalent line intensities at equal concentration is the fundamental basis of any quantitative spectrographic method. On the other hand, powdered samples have an advantage over metals in that any desired number of chemical compounds can be mixed dry in any desired ratio to produce a synthetic standard. Expcrience has shown, however, that spectra of elements in finely divided compounds introduced into a standard in preparing a synthetic ore sample do not always behave in the electric arc in a manner that produces spectral line intensities similar to those observed at the same concentration in a natural mineral. In ore samples minor elements frequently are contained in the crystal lattice of larger particles of an abundant ore mineral. Their dissociation and volatilization from the sample into the arc then proceeds differently in the standard and sample, with resultant differences in intensity. During the past 10 years I have devised and applied several quantitative spectrographic methods for determining various elements in rocks and minerals in connection with studies on their geochemistry,' but the incentive has gradually changed since the summer 0. 1940 to the specific practical problem of searching for domestic sources of rare and stratcgic metals. External oxidation during in-line heat treatment of TRIP steels can cause problems for the subsequent coating process. This research aims to elucidate the kinetic rates of internal oxidation, external oxidation and decarburization and their interdependence under different gas atmospheres and temperatures. A rolled steel sample chemistry of 0.14 wt.% C, 1.8 wt% Mn, 0.6 wt.% Si and 1 wt.% Al is used as a case study. Thermogravimetric techniques are used to examine the net mass change in a sample during heat treatment and the results show an initial mass decrease and later an increase for particular partial pressures of H2O. SEM-EDS, optical microscopy and glancing-angle x-ray are used to quantify the microstructure. The cross-section of the samples have 4 distinct zones: (i) an external scale, rich in fayalite, (ii) an internally oxidized region with Al, Si and Mn oxides in an Fe matrix, (iii) a decarburized steel region, characterized by large ferrite grains and low carbon content, and (iv) a relatively unaffected steel core with a structure similar to the starting material.

The success of the Birmingham roof truss (Figure 1) in supporting some difficult roof conditions, particularly in the Illinois coal basin, has given impetus to the development of a number of alternate schemes. These schemes attempt to alleviate two major problems with the Birming-ham truss, namely, the time required for installation and the cost of material. Because of the difficulty of drilling angled holes and the number of different pieces of hardware which must be handled manually, most operators have been unable to install Birmingham trusses in the cycle and have had to schedule truss crews during the maintenance shift or whenever they would not impede production. Due to this delay the truss has traditionally been viewed as a supplemental form of roof support. In fact, the truss might qualify as primary support and replace at least two bolts if it could he installed in the cycle (and MSHA would accept it as an alternate in the roof plan.) [ ] Figure 1. The Birmingham truss. Two attempts to deal with the first difficulty have sought to streamline the truss hardware while preserving the essential character of the Birmingham truss. One of these, by Peabody Coal, is reported elsewhere in these proceedings by C. Bollier. Another is a contract issued by the Bureau of Mines to Bendix Corporation for the development of a machine, particularly suited for use in low coal, which will automate many of the operations currently executed manually. This machine is expected to be ready for field testing by fall of 1982. Once in place, a truss installed by either of these schemes will interact with the roof in the same way as a conventional Birmingham truss. An alternate approach has been proposed by several different manufacturers independently. Although the hardware details differ. the essential idea consists of two angle bolts, the heads of which are connected by a horizontal chord tightened to some pre-determined tension. Figure 2 shows the generalized concept and does not depict any one of the four systems proposed. The advantage of this scheme is that the angle bolts can be installed and tightened in the cycle, and as bolts, immediately satisfy the roof control plan. The horizontal chord can be added later to achieve almost any initial desired roof loading, the limits of which are defined below this scheme is referred to here as the angle-bolt truss. Because of a fundamental difference in the way in which load is transferred between chords, this design does not interact with the roof under subsequent loading in the same manner as a Birmingham truss. The purpose of this paper is to examine this fundamental difference and its consequences. [ ]

"INTRODUCTION Wood burned for commercial heat and power usually is waste material from some manufacturing process. The amount of it reaches substantial proportions. It is estimated that over 50 percent of the timber cut for lumber becomes ""waste"" in the process - sawdust, shavings, trimmings, slabs, and bark. Woodworking manufacturing processes also produce much waste. The incentive to use this waste has resulted in much development of wood-burning equipment to produce heat and power. To answer general inquiries received by the Bureau, this publication covering developments along these lines was written. Long flames and smoke easily occur during burning. The burning action is substantially retarded, however, by appreciable moisture content; ignition is more difficult. When the moisture content is more than about 70 percent, an auxiliary fuel is required to maintain combustion. One of the main factors in the problem of the satisfactory and smokeless combustion of wood is its moisture content."

This Bureau of Mines report proposes a new methodology for estimating industrial dust explosion hazards in terms of three probabilities or co-factors: The dispersion of the dust, the existence of a flammable dust concentration, and the presence of an effective source of ignition. This method or rationale is proposed as a replacement for the "explosibility index" that was first suggested 25 yr ago, but which, by consen-sus among leading researchers in the field, is now outdated. This report presents a detailed critique of the deficiencies of that old, material-oriented index, and develops the logical rationale for its re-placement by an approach that is better suited for quantitative hazard evaluations. A variety of such evaluations are illustrated, which show how a quantitative prediction of explosion frequencies can be obtained from laboratory measurements and operating conditions in a given indus-trial facility. The method has some pitfalls, particularly as they re-late to the correlation of events or their randomness. These are discussed, as well as the method's other limitations and uncertainties. This work is intended to provide a beginning to a quantitative approach to explosion hazard assessment. To that end, a new method is proposed for estimating thermal ignition probabilities in terms of the measured laboratory autoignition temperature of a dust, its relationship to the operating temperature, and its distribution within a given industrial system.

PREVIOUS investigations1,2 have shown that alloying elements in liquid iron influence the thermodynamic activity of sulphur and thereby affect the partition of sulphur between metal and slag in the desulphurization process. For example, the greater efficiency of desulphurization in the blast furnace as compared to the open hearth can be attributed in part to a higher level of sulphur activity in blast-furnace metal due to the higher concentration of carbon and silicon. In the present investigation, a short study was made of the influence of manganese on the activity of sulphur in liquid iron and iron-carbon alloys. In contrast to carbon and silicon, manganese was found to decrease the activity coefficient of sulphur; and in iron-carbon alloys it counteracts to some extent the influence of carbon. However, at manganese concentrations normally present in the blast furnace or open hearth, the effect of manganese is small. Since manganese sulphide has a limited solubility in iron, manganese can act, under certain conditions as a desulphurizing agent. Considerable data on the manganese-sulphur product in carbon-saturated melts were obtained in the investigation and have been included in this report. The experimental procedure was the same as that used in the earlier investigations on the effect of silicon' and carbon' on sulphur activity. Briefly, the method was as follows: The molten alloy, contained in a graphite or sintered alumina crucible, was brought to equilibrium at a constant temperature with a mixture of hydrogen and hydrogen sulphide of constant composition by bubbling the gas through the metal. Samples of' the melt were taken for analysis at regular intervals by suction through a 2 to 3 mm bore silica tube dipped into the metal. The experiments were run in a graphite spiral resistance furnace with melts weighing 50 to 60 g. The gas bubbling tubes were made of sintered alumina and were 5/16 in. OD, 1/16 in. ID, and 24 in. long. Equilibrium was assumed to have been attained when the sulphur content of the liquid metal reached a constant value. During an experiment there was a rapid loss of manganese from the melt by volatilization. To offset this loss, small additions of manganese were made periodically. The rate of manganese addition needed to maintain a constant manganese concentration was determined in preliminary tests. In all of the experiments, deposits of manganese sulphide formed above the melts in a cooler region of the furnace. Apparently, these deposits resulted from a reaction between manganese vapor and hydrogen sulphide in the gas. To prove that manganese sulphide did not volatilize from the melts to a measurable extent, an experiment was run in which helium was bubbled through liquid iron containing both manganese and sulphur. Although manganese volatilized rapidly in this test, there was no appreciable loss of sulphur. Volatilization of manganese sulphide from a melt would have led to an apparent equilibrium condition in which the sulphur content of the metal was lower than the true equilibrium value. The experimental results are shown in the first seven columns of Table I. The data in the last two columns were obtained from the previous work on the effect of carbon' and show what the results would have been in the absence of manganese but with temperature, gas composition, and carbon content of the metal remaining the same. Comparison of the last four columns show that, in the presence of manganese, the sulphur content of the metal increased at equilibrium and the activity coefficient of sulphur decreased. However, the results show that, for manganese concentrations below 3 pct, the effect of manganese is small. The values for activity coefficient of sulphur given in Table I were calculated from the following relations: S (in liquid metal) + H2 (gas) = H2S (gas) [l] K ph2s/?s X %S X phg = 0.00251 [2] where K is the equilibrium constant for the reaction, PH2S and ph2 are the partial pressures of hydrogen sulphide and hydrogen, respectively, and ?s is the activity coefficient of sulphur. The standard state for sulphur was taken to be a 1 pct solution of sulphur in pure iron. The numerical value for K at 1600°C was determined in the earlier work. For the purpose of showing graphically the results of the tests run at 1600°C, the activity coefficients of sulphur were recalculated so as to correspond to a manganese concentration in the metal of 2 pct in each case. INTRODUCTION The most serious occupational radiation episode in U.S. history was the exposure of uranium miners to radon daughters in the 1945-1968 time period. Although the maximum permissible dose at that time was 12 WLM (working level months) per year, average exposures were several times that figure, and ten times higher exposures were not uncommon. Starting in the early 1960s, mounting epidemiological evidence appeared for an excess incidence of lung cancer among these miners; up to 1974, there was an excess of 134 cases (159 observed vs 25 expected) among the 4000 in the group under study (NAS-1980). When this excess became apparent, the Federal Government took jurisdiction, greatly tightened enforcement, and in 1969 lowered the maximum permissible exposure to 4 WLM per year. These standards were met largely by a great improvement in ventilation. As a result of these measures, average miner exposures were reduced 5-fold from 1965 to 1968 and by another factor of 3 by 1970. In 1978, the 4 WLM/year maximum permissible exposure was exceeded by only 37 of 7500 underground miners, for only 16 wars it exceeded by more than 25%, and for only 8 was it exceeded by 502 (AIF-1980). The average exposures to the various groups are listed in Table 1. We see that the average exposure for all miners was 1.03 WLM, and for those who worked essentially full time underground it was 1.45 WLM. For purpose of later discussion, it will be convenient to choose a single value for average exposures. In view of the fact that employment situations and job categories are bound to vary over a lifetime of work, we take this to be 1.3 WLM/year. The purpose of this paper is not to dwell on history, but rather to address the question of whether or not this present situation is satisfactory. This question was considered recently by a study group under the auspices of National Institue of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH-1980) and it answered the question in the negative, concluding that the maximum permissible exposure should be substantially reduced. However, their arguments were incomplete and were lacking in perspective. The principal thrust of this paper is to provide some of the material overlooked. RISK TO URANIUM MINERS FROM RADON EXPOSURE In order to quantify the risk to uranium miners under present working conditions, it is first necessary to estimate the risk of lung cancer per WLM of exposure. The most straightforward way of doing this is to use the data on the group of uranium miners under study. These are listed in Table 2 for 8 exposure ranges and for the total group (NAS-1980). If all data are given equal weight, the risk is seen to be 3.5 x 10-6 per year per WLM. Much can be said in favor of using this value for the risk as dose independent; it is within one standard deviation (SD) of the observations in 5 of the 8 dose categories (as expected from the definition of SD), and within 2 SD for all 8, and for the three cases differing from the mean by more than one SD, two are above and one is below. However, the uranium miner exposures in the present situation will be far below those covered in Table 2, so it is worth considering the possibility that the risk differs from this at low doses. From the last column of Table 2 we see that the experience from all exposures below 600 WLM indicates a risk higher than the mean for the entire group by more than two standard deviations (the value 600 WLM in this comparison was deliberately chosen to maximize this deviation; for exposures below 360 WLM and 840 WLM, the excess is only 1.0 and 1.6 standard deviations respectively). In view of this tendency for the risk to be higher at lower dose, we will take the risk to be 5.0 x 10-6 per year per WLM in what we will refer to as model A. "Residual materials from the integrated steel plant itself or other sources often contain valuable compounds of e.g. C and Fe. Dust and sludge have to be agglomerated to be able to recycle to the blast furnace (BF) via top-charging. By injection of the materials, preparation methods in terms of e.g. drying and/or screening only, can be used. Alternative carbon materials (ACM) in terms of BF dust and sludge have been successfully injected up to levels of 60 kg/tHM in the LK.AB Experimental Blast Furnace (LKAB EBF®). Efficiency in recovery of valuable compounds as well as the behavior of undesired elements have been evaluated and are discussed.IntroductionTraditionally, recycling of steel in-plant fines is made via the sinter plant and blast furnace route. Steel plants operating with 100% pellet as ferrous burden and have no sinter plant. There are limited areas for land fill and costs are caused for preparation of landfills and deposit fees. Very fine paniculate dusts or sludges cause decreased productivity and increased coke rate in the sinter plant, and therefore other ways for recycling must be considered. Injecting them into the BF could be an economically and technically feasible alternative. Additionally, as the materials contain valuable compounds of e.g. C and Fe."

The recovery of phosphate minerals from the Mt Weld deposit by froth flotation has been studied by many researchers. Most of the flotation experiments were carried out with a tall oil fatty acid as collector and sodium silicate as dispersant and gangue depressant at pH about 10. Several rougher stages and cleaner stages and, sometimes, a desliming stage were included. The major difficulty was to reduce the Fe2O3 impurities in the concentrate to the required level. We used QEM*SEM (Quantitative Evaluation of Materials by Scanning Electron Microscopy) to provide a comprehensive and accurate mineralogical analysis of the flotation products. The analysis indicated that the Fe2O3 impurities were mainly recovered in the second concentrate, owing partly to the incomplete depression of the liberated iron oxides by the sodium silicate and partly to composite particles containing iron oxides. The selective depressing action of sodium silicate was improved by adjusting the variables such as the modulus (SiO2/Na2O), pH and time of standing of the stock sodium silicate solutions or by adding some polyvalent metal salts into sodium silicate solution. The flotation process was optimised to produce a phosphate concentrate with the required grade and recovery (38.6 per cent P2O5, 2.67 per cent Fe2O3, 13.7 for P2O5/(Fe2O3 + A1203), at P2O5 recovery of 81.5 per cent). The possibility of recovering the rare-earth phosphate, monazite, from the Mt Weld deposit by flotation was also studied.

Underground mines often experience roof falls in entries, crosscuts, and intersections of active mining sections, main travel ways, and belt entries. Roof fall heights greater than 20 ft (6 m) make re-bolting of the newly exposed roof dangerous and impractical. To protect mine personnel, belts, moving vehicles, and other facilities, mine operators typically install steel structures such as square or arch sets in the roof fall areas. Wood lagging is usually installed between the steel-sets to enclose the area and protect the entry from recurring falls. Usually the void space above the steel-sets and laggings is backfilled. However, backfilling high roof fall voids is costly, which causes some operators to leave the voids open. In this case, durability of wood over time and the capability of the steel-set and wood lagging to resist falling rocks are unknown. During the last few years, Keystone Mining Services, LLC (Jennmar Corporation affiliate engineering company) designed, tested, and developed an impact-resistant lagging system to protect steel-sets1. Various steel-sets protected with the impact-resistant lagging were approved by MSHA and installed in different underground roof fall rehabilitation projects. This paper presents (1) design, development, and laboratory testing of the patent-pending impact-resistant lagging panel, (2) steel-set design methodology according to the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) national standard, and (3) impact-resistant steel-set design method based on Law of Conservation of Energy. Two underground cases are reviewed to demonstrate the successful application of the impact-resistant lagging system.

This paper discusses a new oil recovery process called the "miscible slug process." This process involves the injection of propane or LPG into the reservoir prior to gas injection. The operating conditions are maintained so that the slug is miscible with both the reservoir oil and the injected gas phase. Thus, a miscible phase displacement is achieved, and high recoveries are obtained from the area of the reservoir contacted. The most striking discovery of the laboratory study which included displacements from cores up to 123 ft in length was that relatively small slugs of LPG are effective over reservoir distances in the miscible displacement of oil. This makes possible the commercial application of the process. The important factors controlling the size of the slug are: (I) reservoir length, (2) reservoir fluid composition, and (3) reservoir pressure at the displacement front. Of lesser importance are the effects of injection rate and porous medium type. Questions which have not been completely answered deal with the effects of gravity and reservoir inhomogeneities on the process. INTRODUCTION One of the major problems facing the oil industry today is recovery of the large fraction of the discovered oil which will remain unrecovered unless some new processes are found. Water flooding has been one successful method used to increase recovery over natural depletion. But even successful water floods may leave 25 to 40 per cent of the pore space filled with residual oil. Recently a process which involves the use of thermal energy has been reported1,'*' which may prove useful in increasing recovery from shallow reservoirs containing highly viscous crudes. This paper deals with a new oil recovery process involving use of miscible phases to displace the oil from the reservoir. Miscible phase displacement oil has been an intriguing idea because the elimination of capillary effects in the reservoir leads to 100 per cent recovery in the areas contacted by the miscible displacing phase. The big deterrent in the past to the practice of miscible phase displacement has been the high cost involved in using large volumes of solvent in the process. The use of high pressure gas to achieve a miscible phase displacement of reservoir oil has been reported4,5 as one economically feasible method. However, this process calls for the maintenance of pressures above 3,000 psi at the dis-placement front. The process described in this paper is not restricted to high reservoir pressures; the only qualification being that the slug of material which is injected into the reservoir must be miscible with both the displaced oil 2nd the displacing phase. Two such cases are the use of an alcohol slug followed by water to achieve a mis-cable water flood, and the use of a low boiling hydrocarbon slug such as propane followed by gas to achieve a miscible gas drive. This paper will deal specifically with the propane dug process. This process will obtain a miscible phase displacement at pressures as low as about 1,200 psi at a reservoir temperature 01 150°F. The process is very simple. The propane displaces oil completely at one front because it is miscible with the oil, and gas displaces the propane completely at a second or trailing front because it is miscible with the propane. A small band of propane should thus remain wedged between the gas and oil phases. This idea has been called the "miscible slug process."6 Unfortunately, the propane slug will become diluted as it flows through the reservoir. "Abstract - The East Sullivan Stock (ESS) is a small, composite felsic alkaline pluton of presumed late Archean age in the Val d’Or mining district. Three main facies have been distinguished: monzonite sensu stricto, porphyritic monzonite, and green trachytic porphyry. This monzonitic group of rocks is of relatively homogeneous composition with high abundances of Na2O, K2O, Ba, Sr, Rb, Zr, Mo and LREE. The alkaline ESS is distinguished from other igneous units in the Val d’Or mining district, such as the Bourlamaque Batholith, by relatively high concentrations of Ba, Sr, Rb, Mo, Cu and Au. The ESS hosts many base (Cu, Mo) and precious (Au) metal occurrences, including: (1) porphyry style Cu-Au-Mo disseminated sulfide deposits, (2) Cu-Au deposits in volcanic rocks near the ESS contact, and (3) pyritic gold mineralization in east-west trending shear zones. The ESS is well defined by concentrical zoning on the aeromagnetic vertical gradient color map, and displays four linear trends, which are assumed to be structural lineaments, at 035°-055°, 320°-300°, eastwest, and north-south. The main mineral occurrences related to the stock display a preferred spatial association with the east-west linear magnetic trends.The ESS is preferentially located along a major structure and was emplaced late in the evolution of the Abitibi subprovince like other felsic alkaline plutons. This stock is similar to late-tectonic mineralized felsic alkaline intrusions of the Kirkland Lake and Larder Lake mining districts in Ontario, and to the Allard stock in the U.S.A. which is associated with gold and base metal mineralization. Similarities also exist with younger alkaline plutons associated with Cu-Mo-Au porphyry deposits in the Canadian Cordillera, which formed in tensional tectonic environments. The felsic alkaline magma may have formed by partial melting of deeply buried supracrustal rocks, concomitant with the development of deep fractures such as the Cadillac Fault. In such an environment, hydrothermal solutions carrying remobilized metals from deep supracrustal rocks may have deposited gold and base metals in structural traps. Plutons similar to the ESS should be good targets for mineral exploration. Trois principaux faciès ont été identifiés: une monzonite sensu stricto, une monzonite porphyrique et un porphyre trachytique vert. A primary factor in the selection of coals for making coke at high temperatures is the amount of pressure the coal will exert upon the oven walls when carbonized in modem by-product ovens.l-3 This factor has become increasingly important in recent years because of demands for increased throughput and higher coke yields. As a result of the increasing necessity for assessing coals in regard to their carbonization pressures, more and more research work is being directed toward developing labora-tory-scale tests for predicting carbonization pressures and for showing how blends of coking coals may be modified to eliminate pressures liable to damage coke-oven walls. The specific reasons have never been defined as to why some blends of coking coals develop dangerous carbonization pressures and others do not, therefore specific procedures to eliminate dangerous pressures could not be prescribed. It is true that the major processes occurring during carbonization have been described by many writers,4 and there is a general agreement on the ideas of the changes that occur as coal is transformed into coke. However, there is little evidence relating the processes occurring during carbonization to the pressure developed and the available evidence is very incomplete and often contradictory. This deficiency arises in part from the fact that the fundamental causes of pressure development have not been defined, at least from experimental data, and in turn this is the result of the lack of satisfactory testing equipment for studying the problem. Operating experience has shown several ways of reducing or eliminating dangerous pressures,5 but probably none of these ways is applicable to all blends of coking coals, and such empirical methods often lead to production of inferior coke. They are trial-and-error methods, not designed to remedy specific causes of pressure development. The number of laboratory-scale testing devices designed to estimate the carbonization pressures that result when coals are carbonized in commercial ovens is probably well over a hundred.6 Few of these instruments have remained in use for any length of time, either because the predictions were not sufficiently accurate or, more often, because too many exceptions were found. Often testing devices are operated without any attempt at duplication of conditions in commercial ovens and erroneous and contradictory results are frequently obtained. Therefore, it has seemed desirable to study the properties of coal itself and to determine any relationships between the properties of the coal and the carbonization pressures developed. Trenching, sampling, and core drilling in Stillwater and Sweetgrass Counties, Mont., by the Bureau of Mines have delimited over 5,000,000 tons of chromite ore containing more than 20 per cent chromic oxide. The Benbow and Mouat-Sampson mines have been developed and are fully equipped for mining and milling 500 tons and 2000 tons a day, respectively. Introduction The Montana chromite deposits were the first to be explored under the Strategic Minerals Act of 1939. In June of that year, the Bureau of Mines started exploration by trenching, test pitting, sampling and diamond drilling, and completed the project in March 1943. The U. S. Geological Survey cooperated by mapping the geology and logging the cores. The project was to determine the extent and grade of the chromite ore and to indicate sufficient reserves to justify development and exploitation of the deposits for the national emergency. Exploration has indicated that the district contains the largest and most important reserve of chromite ore in the United States. The Benbow and Mouat-Sampson mines have been developed and a 500-ton concentrating mill has been constructed on the Benhow property and a 2000-ton mill on the Mouat-Sampson property. Concentrates were produced from the Benbow mill three months after the attack on Pearl Harbor, when the nation's major chromite supplies from foreign sources were cut off. History It has been known for 50 to 60 years that some chromite deposits existed in an east-west belt along the north escarpment of the Beartooth Mountains about 25 miles north of Yellowstone Park, but nothing was known of their size and extent until the war demand of 1917 and 1918 stimulated the search. In those years two properties in the Stillwater region were actively developed, but no shipments were made. The Benbow property was located in 1918 by a local group. The property comprised seven claims along the strike at the east end of the belt. An adit was driven several hundred feet on the Eclipse claim. The seven claims were sold to the Chromium Products Corporation of Livingston, Mont., and were subsequently patented. In 1929, an eastern group obtained an option, installed some equipment, and erected several log cabins. The "crash" in the market in 1929 caused the operators to drop their lease, and the property remained inactive until 1939, when the Bureau of Mines began its exploration. Fourteen claims were located on the Boulder River in 1918 and subsequently patented by the U. S. Chrome Corporation.

As part of safety and stability studies at three underground mines in the United States, researchers installed earth pressure cells and embedment strain gauges in cemented rockfill to measure stress and strain changes as mining progressed and the rockfill was loaded. Data from these instruments were used to calculate the in situ modulus of the rockfill for two of the mines. A three-dimensional numerical model of a cemented rockfill cap was validated with data from extensometers anchored in the mine roof and sill; this model was then used to estimate deformation modulus at the third mine because the earth pressure cells and embedment strain gauges recorded negligible changes. Rockfill binder used at these mines ranged from 4 to 8 per cent of the dry components by weight, the water-to-cement ratio was from 0.42 to1.0, and the largest aggregate size in the three mixes ranged from 5 to12 cm (2 to 4.7 in). The range of the calculated in situ deformation modulus values was large, but as expected, it was bracketed by modulus values for cemented tailings and roller-compacted concrete with similar cement contents and water-to-cement ratios. ALMOST every metallurgist who has given the Howe Memorial Lecture has had a personal contact with the distinguished gentleman to whose honor this hour is devoted. Unfortunately for me, such personal contacts were not possible. However, in the preparation of a thesis on the open-hearth process, one of my earliest tasks was to make a survey of the literature, and it was from Professor Howe's Metallurgy of Iron and Steel that I drew a number of references to previous work which formed the foundation for my reading. In his volume there is such a complete exposition of the then current thought on the subject of slags and on their role in the elimination of phosphorus from steel that I feel no hesitation in discussing in this Howe Lecture the subject of "Slag Control." In the present era of close specification, the drive for uniformity of product, and the close inspection of the product and of the cost sheet, the utmost efforts must be made to control the steelmaking variables to the best advantage of the steel producer. One of the major variables is the slag in the furnace and its effect upon the composition and quality of the metal. What advantages are to be gained from slag control? In the broad sense the advantages must be tremendous, because the very foundations of good steel melting are based on "shaping up" the slag to a point where, with proper temperature, the heat is ready for the final additions. Every melter works toward these ends through his experience with innumerable heats of steel. The elimination of undesirable constituents such as phosphorus and sulphur is entirely a matter of slag composition and physical nature, a point well known for over half a century. The role played by the slag in assisting in proper heat transfer from roof and flame to the steel has been equally well known. In more recent years there has come the problem of oxygen control in the more accurate gaug-ing of additions for making high-grade rimmed steel for the new strip mills, and in the deoxidizing additions for grain-size control and cleanli-ness of forging steels, both carbon and alloy. In this problem the oxidiz-ing characteristics of the slag are of prime importance.

"The Cape Breton Development Corporation is a federal Crown corporation which was formed in 1968. Initially, the Corporation had two divisions - the Industrial Development Division, whose purpose was to stimulate Cape Breton Island's economy, and the Coal Division with a mandate to phase out the operating coal mines. However, that strategy changed in the early 1970s with the Middle East oil crisis. As a result of that crisis, Nova Scotia Power Corporation adopted an ""off oil"" policy. Today, approximately 700/0 of Nova Scotia power needs are met by generation of electricity from coal. Therefore, since the early 1970s, emphasis has been on the rehabilitation of the Cape Breton coal mining business with the opening of three new mines.Today, Devco is solely a coal mining company which employs 3300 people.Physical DescriptionThe mines operate in the Sydney coal field which is located on the eastern tip of Cape Breton. The Corporation leases the deposit from the province of Nova Scotia and its leases cover all coal from the outcrop to the 4000 ft depth. The seams outcrop along the shoreline and dip beneath the ocean floor at dips varying between 5% and 100%.There are eleven seams, of which three - the Harbour, Phalen, and Hub - have been extensively mined."
