Zinc alloy castings continue to account for a very large, world-wide end-use market for zinc. However, an ever expanding multitude of other materials and processes are increasingly providing viable, cost-effective alternatives to designers, many of whom have no particular allegiance to any one industry. In order to meet this challenge, innovation of and for the zinc hot chamber pressure die casting process, in concert with sustained and inventive market development, is clearly required. While 'Quality' is now the watchword, and the goal of zero defects is being rigorously pursued, other important goals which must be addressed include net shape casting, enhanced productivity and increased energy efficiency. The paper gives an overview of several practical, process-orientated, projects designed to help achieve these goals. For example, a project designed to understand and precisely measure dimensional changes of castings with time has provided some of the critical information needed for net shape casting. A second study is looking anew at surface quality in relation to process conditions as an important step toward the goals of zero scrap rate and increased productivity. Developing the correct die casting machine parameters for achieving optimal quality and properties of zinc (ZA) die castings is a further example of research designed to benefit both the die caster and his customer, chiefly the original equipment manufacturer (OEM). A project on die soldering or galvanising in response to varying process parameters is similarly being considered in order to foster increased understanding and avoidance of problems, with a special interest in the use of special coatings. The maintenance or expansion of the future market for zinc die casting alloys also depends on design for functional applications, as an adjunct to their traditional decorative use. The role that alloys with enhanced properties can play, such as ZATEC, a new high creep resistant alloy developed specifically for elevated stress/elevated temperature applications, will be briefly discussed.

The gold catalyst supported on iron oxide was prepared from gold dissolved in aqua regia by a deposition-precipitation method and applied to CO oxidation in the absence and presence of hydrogen. Some characterization methods such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen adsorption, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), temperature programmed reduction (TPR), temperature programmed oxidation (TPO), and the pulsed CO chemisorption with temperature programmed desorption (TPD) were conducted to explain different catalytic activities of Au/Fe2O3 catalyst pretreated at different conditions. The particle size of gold was about 10 nm for Au/Fe2O3 calcined in air at 373 and 573 K. For complete CO oxidation, the decreasing CO conversion with a reaction time was observed at low temperatures but its initial catalytic activity can be restored by a heat treatment at high temperatures. This catalyst was quite active for the selective CO oxidation in the presence of hydrogen especially at low temperatures. In the presence of hydrogen, the deactivation was significantly diminished.

Various models are discussed for the evaluation of the negative pressures which may occur in solidifying materials which exhibit various deformation modes: elastic-plastic, Bingham, viscous, or creep flow. The inadequacy of the previously proposed elastic-plastic solution for solidifying metals is revealed by comparison with the more reliable creep results which are given graphically for aluminum, copper, nickel, and iron. The maximum tensions experienced in the liquid phase of solidifying spheres ranging in size from large castings to submicron powders are in the range from —10' to —105 atm for these metals. THERE has been much recent interest in the negative pressures associated with the volume change on solidification and in the possibility of the occurrence of cavitation. Considering the freezing of a highly supercooled liquid, an attempt to evaluate the stresses in the liquid ahead of the rapidly moving solidification front has been made by Horvay1 on a microscale and by Glicksman2 on a macroscale. In a casting of a wide freezing range alloy, the pressure differential due to viscous flow of residual liquid through the pasty zone has been discussed by Piwonka and Flemings,3 In a previous publication4 the author has attempted to estimate the negative pressure occurring in the residual liquid of a spherical casting, employing an elastic-plastic model to describe the collapse of the solidified shell under the internal tension. An earlier model assuming a rigid shell was shown to be inaccurate by many orders of magnitude. The elastic-plastic model is critically reviewed here, and other models are developed which are thought to be more closely related to metals and other materials near their melting points. The spherical geometry (Fig. 1) is chosen because the highest shrinkage pressures would be developed, although the analyses are readily adaptable to cylindrical geometry. A parallel sided casting experiences little internal tension because of the relatively easy dishing inward of the sides. (This commonly observed phenomenon has previously been attributed solely to atmospheric pressure.) Furthermore, small regions of confined liquid in a large solidified volume of a casting approximate reasonably well to spherical geometry. ELASTIC-PLASTIC MODEL The author has shown4 that as solidification proceeds the internal hydrostatic tension builds up until the elastic limit of the shell is exceeded. At this point the internal pressure is closely -2Y/3. Subsequently a plastic zone spreads from the inner surface toward the outer surface of the shell. When the whole casting is deforming plastically a rather more generalized analysis taking account of the externally applied pressure PA + 2y/b gives the internal pressure as: P = Pa + 2y/a + 2ys/b - 2 Y In(b/a) [1] The 2y/a and 2ys/b terms result from the tendency of the liquid-solid and solid-vapor interfaces to shrink, reducing their energy, and thereby helping to collapse the solid phase and compress the liquid phase. The 2y/b term would be important only for powders. The last term arises because of the plastic restraint of the solid, resisting collapse and so effectively expanding the residual liquid. From Eq. [I] it is easily shown that there is a minimum in the pressure at the radius amia= y/Y [2] which is of the order of 103K for the metals aluminum, copper, and iron, and corresponds to the minimum pressure Pmin = 2 Y[l-ln(bY/y [3] The results of a fully worked out elastic-plastic solution are given in a previous reporL4 The main criticism which may be leveled at this analysis when applied to metals at their melting points is the strong dependence of the yield stress on the strain rate. The strain rate varies with both solidification conditions (e.g., whether chill-cast or slowly cooled) and during solidification, as is indicated in the following section. Thus an appropriate choice of Y is very arbitrary. Before proceeding to a discussion of models which are strain-rate-dependent, it is necessary to evaluate the strain rate as a function of the rate of solidification. SOLIDIFICATION RATE Various empirical relations have been deduced5 for the rate of thickening of the solid shell by pour- out tests on partially solidified spheres. These, however, are unsatisfactory for our purposes since they become very inaccurate when the liquid core is very small. A theoretical approach is therefore necessary, and some solutions are set out below. In 1988, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the 34,310-acre Diablo Mountain (Additional) study area (OR-001-058), in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources and occurrences. The study area lies along the east shore of saline Summer Lake in Lake County, OR, about 145 miles southeast of Bend and 45 miles northwest of Lakeview. The climate is semiarid and temperate, and the study area is almost treeless. Geologically, the (Additional) study area is in a region of fault block-formed mountains and basins, characterized by interior drainage. The area is mainly underlain by unconsolidated Quaternary and Pleistocene lake and playa sediments, which may include subsurface evaporite mineral deposits and resources. Near the center of the eastern margin of the study area are an occurrence of dolomitic limestone of unknown extent, and an area of basalt outcrop totaling 1.5 square miles. A veneer of windblown sand covers about one-half the study area.

GROUND waters-hot or cold-containing small amounts of the more common earth acids, such as carbonic acid, silicic acid, hydrogen sulfide, sulfurous acid and sulfuric acid, have only a very limited "solvent effect on dominantly siliceous rocks, whether of igneous or sedimentary origin, but in limestone they often form extensive cavities; and such "limestone caves" are the only openings of considerable size and continuity in rock formations that do not owe their existence directly and almost wholly to dynamic action. Limestone caves such as are developing at the present time must have been formed in all past geological ages in which limestone beds existed and where suitable conditions for the development of such caves prevailed; hence it would seem a reasonable expectation that, in the course of geological history, a certain number of ancient limestone caves must have been utilized as channels for the passage of mineralizing solutions, during portions of their course, at least, and that, in consequence, orebodies must have been deposited in such caves. Such a conception is not novel; it was proposed many years ago, but its possibilities, as explaining certain types of ore deposits, have been rather lost sight of in the development of the theory of the metasomatic replacement of rocks by minerals. It is the purpose of this article to assemble evidence to show that many of the orebodies found in limestone beds have been deposited in pre-existing caves; to discuss the criteria whereby such orebodies can be distinguished from others which have been formed along fissures and fracture zones traversing limestone, by the more common method of metasomatic replacement, analogous to orebodies in other formations; and to describe certain orebodies-particularly the "ore channels" of the Tintic district, Utah-as illustrative of the principles discussed. Limestone caves may be divided into two classes: those formed by cold, descending surface waters, which emerge again at some lower elevation as cold springs; and those formed by hot, ascending waters of deep origin or circulation, which attain the surface as thermal springs. Although these two classes are similar in many respects, there are certain characteristic and inherent differences whereby they can usually be distinguished.

"The morphology of iron ore concentrate particles is known to influence several properties of iron ore pellets, including drop number, compression strength, and reduction properties. This study aimed to determine why grinding methods and particle morphology influence green pellet properties. Particle morphology can be directly related to the grinding method: ball mill (BM) or high pressure grinding roll (HPGR). In this research, two iron ore concentrates, namely Gol-e-gohar and Ardakan, were ground by a BM and HPGR to produce a suitable Blaine value for pelletizing (nearly 1,900 cm2/g). Morphological features of particles were subsequently investigated by sieving and cyclone sizing for particle size distribution, the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) and Blaine methods for specific surface area (SSA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for the evaluation of shape descriptors. It was concluded that HPGR resulted in generating a greater proportion of fine particles compared to ball milling. The BET results showed that the SSA of HPGR pellet feed was higher than that from the BM due to a greater proportion of cracks, indents and bulges and the creation of new fracture surfaces. SEM images processed by ImageJ software indicated that particles ground by the BM tended to be more rounded and less elongated than HPGR particles because of the breakage model of each method. To show the effect of morphology on the green pellet quality, green pelletizing was performed in a pilot pelletizing disc. The HPGR pellet feed had a higher drop number in comparison to the BM pellet feed, due to the angular and rough shape of the particles.INTRODUCTIONThe demand for fine or ultra-fine particles as feed material for ceramics, composite materials, and mineral processing is on the rise (Kotake, Kuboki, Kiya, & Kanda, 2011). The final concentrate of iron ore processing plants (filter cake) has a size range roughly between 0 and 300 µm, depending on the liberation of Fe containing particles (Meyer, 1980). In general, to produce a suitable pellet feed of appropriate quality, Blaine numbers of 1800–2000 cm2/g should be achieved (Van der meer, 2015)."

This paper describes the development and installation of equipment for continuously measuring separating density in the dense medium cyclone circuits of the four million tpa Port Kembla B/C plant coal washeries. Monitoring equipment consisting of magnetic coils and differential pressure cells were installed in U-tubes taking the full flow of magnetite from the drain sections of the product drain and rinse screens. The monitoring equipment measures overflow magnetics concentration and overflow density continuously and has operated since 1989. From these measurements and calibration trials, the separating density of operating cyclone modules can be inferred reliably. Variographic analyses of the data show that medium density control to +/- 0.002 RD units and separation density control to +/- 0.007 RD units are achievable. Either method for measuring separation density can be used with approximately the same accuracy, although the overflow density measurement technique suffers from the need to have regular flushing of the Dp cells which complicates the signal analysis. Data from the plant shows that separation density can be controlled by regulating medium density, but the assumption of a constant offset between medium density and separation density is erroneous.

This report outlines the experience of Australian mining operators in dealing with large falls of roof in advance of longwall supports. Previous and present techniques used for face stabilisation have been described, together with an analysis of [actors which contributed to the roof falls, in each case. Attention has been focused on the stabilisation technique used at Angus Place Colliery, where the face coal was successfully reinforced by injecting chemical foam into Lite fractured areas. Although considered to be one of the worst roof falls in the history of Australian longwalls (60 m in length and up to 10 in in height), it was subsequently possible to resume cutting in Longwall 9 two weeks after the foam injection. A preliminary schedule of work involving the 'strata replacement' method, is also discussed. It has been based substantially on experience gained with cementitious supports, principally by ACIRL and Monier Resources.

This paper is the nineteenth of a series from the Aluminum Research Laboratories, presenting the results of the investigations of equilibrium relations in aluminum-base alloys made from electrolytically refined aluminum. In previous papers equilibrium relations have been determined and correlated for 12 binary systems. Equilibrium relations have also been determined for portions of the aluminum corners of three ternary systems (aluminum-iron-silicon, aluminum-magnesium-silicon and aluminum-copper-magnesium). The object of the present paper and those to follow is to increase our knowledge of the aluminum corner of the more important ternary systems. In 1926 Dix and Keith † suggested a new method for designating the phases encountered in alloy systems. The system has been used to a very limited extentl,2,3 The system has since been slightly modified and will be used in this and future papers. In the system as modified, a phase is designated by placing in parentheses the chemical symbols of the elements essential to the formation of that phase. The symbols in the parentheses are separated by dashes in order to clearly distinguish them from a chemical formula. Elements that are not necessary to the formation of the phase in question, but which may be present in solid solution, are not indicated in the designation. If two or more phases would have the same designation according to these rules, they are distinguished by prefixing Greek letters, and are definitely identified by X-ray diffraction patterns. Previous Investigations The solid solubility of magnesium in aluminum has been well established by the work of Dix and Keller4, Schmid and Siebe15, and Saldau and Sergeev6. There is no agreement as to the composition of the magnesium constituents at the aluminum end of the binary aluminum-magnesium system. Hanson and Gayler7 report Mg2Al3; Boyer8 found that the alloy

a Uranium was deformed by cold rolling, and the effects of this plustic deformation on the microstruc-ture of the metal were observed by the technique of transmission elecbon microscopy. The recrystalli-zation of selected cold-wmked samples was also studied by this method. The samples were prepared for examination by electrolytic thinning in a standard metallographic electrolyte which has not been previously reported as being used in producing thin foils of uranium. The microstructural changes observed in the a uranium were generally similar to those seen by optical microscopy. The changes in the microstructure of a uranium following cold work and recrystallization treatments have been the subjects of several studies employing optical and X-ray techniques.12-19 These studies indicated that twinning was the redominant mode of deformation at room temperature20 and that the regions of high energy associated with the deformation twins were preferred sites for the initiation of recrystallization.15,18, Recently several workers have prepared thin foils of uranium suitable for examination by transmission electron microscopy.'-lo The foils thus prepared have been used to study fission fragment damage; a particular dislocation reaction,' and gas precipitation." At this laboratory the microstructural changes occurring during the cold working and recrystallizing of a uranium samples have been studied by using transmission electron-microscopy techniques. The foils used in this work were electrolytically thinned in a polishing bath not reported previously in the literature as being used for this purpose. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The uranium used in this investigation was depleted a uranium sheet 4 mils thick. The results of a spectrochemical analysis of this material are shown in Table I. The as-received uranium was cut into strips, 1 in. wide by 5 in. long, and annealed in vacuo at 600°C for 2-1/2 hr. The resulting microstructure consisted of relatively uniform, equiaxed grains having diameters of 10 to 50 p. Cold Working. The cold-worked samples were prepared by rolling several of the annealed uranium strips to various thicknesses. The strips were reduced 3.5 ± 0.5, 6.0 ± 0.6, 10.0 ± 0.5, 19.5 ± 1.0, and 28.5 ± 2.0 pct in thickness. It was not possible to achieve these reductions with a single pass through the rolling mill, so the strips were turned end for end during the rolling procedure. The cold-rolled strips were stored in dry ice until samples from them could be thinned and examined (within 24 hr after rolling). Annealing. The samples used in studying the re-crystallization behavior of a uranium were obtained by annealing sections of the strips which had been reduced 10.0 and 28.5 pct. These samples were sealed in evacuated Pyrex capsules and were annealed in a tube furnace at temperatures from 200" to 600°C and for times from 1/2 to 2 hr, see Table l. Thinning: The samples from the rolling and heat treatments were prepared for examination in the electron microscope by electropolishing in a bath composed of 25 g chromic acid, 133 ml glacial acetic acid, and 25 ml water. This electrolyte has been used and recommended for preparing specimens for optical metallography It was necessary to mask the edges of the sample with a stop-off paint in order to prevent preferential attack in these areas. The paint used was made by dissolving polystyrene in benzene. The electrolytic cell consisted of a cylindrical stainless-steel cathode placed in a beaker containing the electrolyte, with the sample as the anode positioned at the cell axis. THE Utah coal field to which the name Book Cliffs is applied runs in a northeast direction from Mt. Hilgarde, in Sevier county, along the escarpment of the Wasatch Plateau to the vicinity of Castle Gate, thence southeast along the Book cliffs, which lie to the north of and generally within sight of the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad,. to the Colorado line. The Book cliffs form the southern escarpment of the West and East Travaputs Plateaus, and vary in height from 2,000 to 6,000 ft. At the base of the Wasatch and Book Cliffs escarpments is a broad plain known as Castle valley. The coal beds outcropping in the escarpments along this valley are worked on the largest scale of any in the State, and this particular area is known locally as the Castle Valley coal field. Geology The Book cliffs are capped by the Tertiary-Eocene-formation, consisting of varicolored shales; buff sandstone, conglomerate, and subordinate thin beds of limestone. Different sections show diverse stratigraphy. This is mainly the Wasatch formation, and lies unconformably upon the rocks of the Upper Cretaceous. Fig. 1 is a generalized section of the rocks of the. Book Cliffs field. The Mesaverde formation contains the cliff-making rocks of the Book cliffs, and is composed of massive sandstone interbedded with sandy shales and beds of coal and carbonaceous shale. The sandstone has greater resistance to erosion and the formation is characterized by escarpment ledges and cliffs. The shale is commonly sandy and is drab in color, but where it is associated with the coal it is usually carbonaceous. The sandstone is generally buff, though occasionally it is white, and in places red. The bedding ranges from thin to massive. In the lower part. of the formation the sandstone is red in

A METAL or alloy finds its place in commerce in proportion to its ability to serve certain purposes better and more economically than other materials. While there is some overlapping of the fields of application of the various metals under discussion in this symposium, each one has its uses for which it is especially adapted. While aluminum is the most recent of the metals to enter the field, the development of the industry has been based on its peculiar properties, by virtue of which new uses for non-ferrous metals have been created. There has been substitution of this new metal for other members of the group but there has been a far greater development in entirely new fields. In common with the other non-ferrous metals, aluminum is resistant to atmospheric corrosion. It also withstands the action of many of the common chemical reagents, strongly alkaline substances being the notable exceptions. The outstanding properties on which the application of aluminum is based are its low specific gravity and its ease of fabrication into the forms in which it is used. It is noteworthy that this property of specific lightness is retained in all the commercial aluminum-base alloys. This statement does not apply to aluminum bronze; this is more properly a copper-base alloy, since aluminum enters into its composition to the extent of only about 10 per cent. None of the commercial casting alloys of aluminum has a density exceeding that of the parent metal by more than about 10 per cent., and some are actually lighter. In the so-called "strong alloys" of aluminum in which strengths comparable to that of mild steel are developed by heat treatment, the greatest increase in density is only slightly more than 3 per cent., and one of these, also, is lighter than aluminum. This property of lightness combined with the desirable mechanical properties of the alloys, makes aluminum especially suited for parts of moving assemblies where saving in power, as well as a decrease in stresses resulting from inertia and vibration, are of importance.

"Mercury is introduced into the Bayer refining process as a trace element in bauxite. During the digestion stage, a portion of the mercury is extracted which partitions between the flash tank off-gas, vapour condensate and bauxite residue streams. A technology or treatment that stabilises mercury in the solid phase during digestion would prevent environmental management issues that may arise from the presence of mercury in condensate and non-condensable gases. This study examines the effect of process additives on the deportment of mercury under Bayer digestion conditions. Bauxite digestion experiments were conducted in batch autoclaves in the presence of additives. Process liquor was analysed for mercury content using a thermal desorption technique. Pyrite and copper hydroxide were evaluated for their suitability as additives.INTRODUCTIONMercury is an ancient metal characterised by electrochemical nobility, volatility, low solubility in water and a liquid state at room temperature (Holleman and Wiberg, 2001). The biogeochemical cycle of mercury is complex. Elemental mercury may enter the atmosphere due its volatility, where it can be transported long distances. After settling and adsorption to sediments, methylation is catalysed through microbial metabolism (Qureshi et al., 2009). Methylated mercury species are potent neurotoxins, and bioaccumulation of mercury is well documented, particularly in seafood (Kozin et al., 2013, Pan et al., 2014, Pollman, 2014). Environmental regulations for mercury emissions are becoming increasingly stringent (UNEP, 2015). Considerable research has already been performed and technologies developed for the remediation of mercury in wastewater and the trapping of mercury from industrial stack emissions. Wastewater technologies usually target ionised mercury using adsorbent, ion exchange and complexation mechanisms (Krishnan and Anirudhan, 2002, Li et al., 2015a, Chiarle et al., 2000), while stack emission technology is dominated by impregnated activated carbon adsorbents (Gao et al., 2013, Zheng et al., 2012). Related developments include piezoelectric amalgamating sensors for in line detection of gaseous elemental mercury in industrial stack emissions (Kabir et al., 2015, Sabri et al., 2011). There is a paucity of research regarding removal of mercury from the Bayer process."

The chemical compositions of copper feed streams are becoming increasingly complex following the growing demand for metals and corresponding shortages of primary sources. The optimisation of process conditions requires an accurate description of phase equilibria and thermodynamics. Integrated experimental and thermodynamic modelling research program on the characterisation of the complex, multi-component, multi-phase gas-slag-matte-speiss-metal-solids Cu2O-PbO-ZnO-Al2O3- CaO-MgO-FeO-Fe2O3-SiO2-S-(As-Bi-Ni-Sb-Sn-Ag-Au) system is being carried out to support companies undertaking the pyrometallurgical primary production and recycling of copper. The experiments involve high temperature equilibration in controlled gas atmospheres, rapid quenching and direct measurement of equilibrium phase compositions with quantitative microanalytical techniques, including electron probe X- ray microanalysis and Laser Ablation ICP-MS. The thermodynamic modelling is undertaken using FactSage computer package with advanced thermodynamic solution models. The continuing development of research methodologies has resulted in significant advances in research outcomes. Implementation of the results of these fundamental studies involves an ongoing collaboration of researchers and industry technologists. An overview of recent progress in research, implementation and applications in industrial practice are given in the paper. INTRODUCTION Rapidly developing technologies increase the demand for various metals in number and volumes. Modern technological devices such as mobile phones, computers, other electronic devices, have dozens of metals—all those metals have to be a) produced and b) recycled. The fast transition in mobility from fossil energy delivered through combustion to renewable energy first stored in bakeries and delivered through electric engines introduce a significant change in the metal demand in terms of both type and volume of metals. Pyrometallurgy is playing a key role in supporting these changes in our industrialised society.

Two radioactive tracers have been tested as a means of determining core saturation in multiphase flow studies. Cesium chloride was tried as a water-phase tracer, but complications in its use in low permeability cores resulted from sorption of cesium by the core or water-wet pads. IodoI3'ben-zene proved very satisfactory as an oil-phase tracer. The synthesis of iodobenzene from the sodium iodide as received from Oak Ridge is simple and direct. The tracer is insoluble in water and there was no evidence of sorption by any of the core materials used. use of the method to determine saturation profiles during capillary and dynamic desaturations and relative permeability measurements on oil-water and oil-gas systems is described. Comparisons of the dynamic and capillary methods of relative permeability determination were made using the tracer to check core saturation and saturation distribution. Other experiments are also described in which mobility of the oil phase at various saturations was measured by displacing labeled oil by flowing inactive oil. Similar experiments were made using water labeled with cesium 134. INTRODUCTION To be fundamentally sound. any laboratory method of determining relative permeability must meet, among others, the following requirements: (1) the core saturation between the pressure taps must be uniform, and (2) there must be uniform pressure difference between the phases in the region between the pressure taps. In practice it may eventually be shown that appreciable departure from either or both of these conditions may be permitted without introducing sensible error. but the magnitude of such error remains to be established. There is need then for methods of saturation determina- tion which will determine the saturation profile in a core as well as the overall average saturation given by the gravimetric or material balance methods usually employed. Methods which have received consideration include resistivity, X-ray absorption, gamma ray absorption, neutron diffraction, and radioactive tracers. The resistivity method has use in the determination of profile, but needs checking by independent means.' The X-ray method has been used successfully, but requires elaborate equipment and calibration.23 4 At present gamma ray absorption is practical only for very large cores. The neutron methodo does not appear adaptable to measurement of saturation variations in short cores since it is a scattering method. Russell, Morgan and Muskat' employed radiovanadium in a study of the mobility of interstitial water. Coomber and Tiratsook used radioiodine as an oil-phase tracer and measured profiles in unconsolidated sand packs. ADVANTAGES OF RADIOACTIVITY METHOD A thorough discussion of the theory of radioactive tracers and the technique of using them to study the movement of fluids in sands is given by Coomber and Tiratsoos and need not be detailed here. The method requires less equipment than the X-ray method; the counting problem is similar, but the generation and regulation of the radiation, which is a major problem in the X-ray method, is not required in the radioactivity method. In the X-ray method it is customary to add up to 20 per cent of absorber, usually an iodine compound, to the phase to be labeled. while in the radioactivity method a mere trace is sufficient. A possible disadvantage of the radioactivity method is that a disproportionate amount of the activity comes from the portion of the core nearest the counter, whereas the X-ray gives a true average saturation in the region traversed by the beam. 011 the other hand, this characteristic of the radioactivity method renders it peculiarly adaptable to study of certain types of radial variations in saturation. Knowledge of the hydrogeological setting of a mine forms an integral part of a mining operation. Groundwater impacts, initially, on mine feasibility. Then, on commencement of mining, it interacts on the operational components of dewatering, water supply, tailings leachates, mine wall stability, stormwater run-off, water disposal, impact on regional environment and mine closure planning. The recording of hydrogeological information is frequently overlooked during resource and reserve definition as well as during the course of mining when prime opportunity exists for the collection and collation of this data. In recent times, the exclusion of hydrogeological data has been exacerbated by use of high air pressure drill rigs that exclude water inflow. The recording of water data has been further inhibited by the use of computer coded drill logs that do not include the site geologistÆs or drillerÆs comments on drilling problems and observations associated with groundwater intersections. Geologists now infrequently directly supervise drill rigs, but visit the rig only intermittently to evaluate drilling progress. They do not see first hand drill performance characteristics at water make zones. Drill cuttings, as drill chips and cores, are now mostly logged away from the drill site so that wet sample locations, visual water flow evidence and verbal comments from the driller are not recorded. As a result, mine geologists now do not direct adequate attention to the delineation of lithologies and structures that store and transmit water. This paper provides examples of water sighting and recording techniques applicable to a mining operation. Examples are also provided where hydrogeological conditions have been disregarded with serious impact on the progress of mining. The recording of hydrogeological data should be maintained and formatted by the site geologists into a useful database for review as and when required by specialists in hydrogeology, geotechnical and mining engineering and the environment. The information can be coded by the site geologist for inclusion into the mine database. A groundwater dataset, compiled during the progress of field investigations, will save the considerable cost of re-drilling and hole re-entry testing which would otherwise be required to provide base level hydrogeological information required for progress of mining. Apart from working mine use, a hydrogeological dataset is a necessary component for planning mining closure and mine legacy conditions.

INTRODUCTION BELT conveyors generally are conceded to be the most economical method yet devised for the transportation of large quantities of bulk materials within plants. Belts are coming into greater use for transportation over long distances and are replacing other forms of long-haul conveyance. It is not the intent of the writer to comment on the design of belt conveyors, but to offer some suggestions for improvement in the operation of conveying belts, based on many years experience with belts in several stonecrushing plants. It is the contention of this writer that opportunities for improvement not fully realized by most operators exist in many plants and that a study of the individual conveyors can result in lower unit belt costs. GENERAL RELIABILITY It is the fool-proof nature and general reliability of the belt conveyor that is responsible for its neglect. Even when abused, a belt will carry large tonnages and last a long time, often outlasting the personnel responsible for its care. Some operators look upon the purchase of a new belt as an expensive outlay every so many years, rather than a constant and steady cost amounting in belt wear alone to several dollars every operating day. This belt wear for all conveyors in one stone-crushing plant known by the writer costs 1 1/2 cents per ton or $12 to $15 per hour, based on the present cost of belt replacements. The fact that these replacement costs are double those of prewar quality emphasizes the necessity of improving the conditions that make belts wear out. Some of those conditions are the responsibility of the conveyor designer, and if a serious original error has been made, this handicap cannot be overcome by the operator. If the belt is too narrow, too steep, or too fast for good loading, the operator finds that he has an inherently expensive belt. The other factors that decrease the life of a belt are more or less under his control. The two factors of most importance are the loading conditions and the alignment. Most of the cover wear and carcass cutting occurs at the loading point and if the alignment is not good under all conditions, edge wear or damage may result, Fig I. LOADING THE BELT It is difficult to load a belt in an ideal manner; that is, to flow the material on the moving belt at a steady rate, without impact, without turbulence, and with a velocity equal to and in the same direction as the belt. An inclined belt is especially difficult to load and particularly when its speed is over 300 or 350 fpm. Inclined conveyors require longer skirt plates to prevent spillage until the load settles. It does not seem reasonable to expect an inclined conveyor to carry the same load as a horizontal belt of the same width and speed, because of the difficulty in loading

Investigations were carried out of burden distribution using a full scale model of the furnace top. Various charging sequences were used and large differences were found between ore charged as sinter-pellets and as pellets-sinter. These were attributed to the differences in the angle of repose between the two materials. Permeability index was defined which was independent of the driving rate from which a furnace resistance index was obtained for use in weekly reports. Results are summarised as a single expression between blast rates and pressures and the values of Qbl and Qmax are continuously measured to aid the operators in controlling the wind rate in the safe AP region. Results also indicate a reserve in capacity of No. 7 BF.

IN the belief that a critical study of its operating problems might be a sound investment, the Cuban American Manganese Corporation initiated an ore-treatment research in cooperation with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. One of the early objectives of this research naturally became the relationship of the microscopy of the Cuban ores of the Corporation to their flotation treatment. The operations in Cuba have already been described by F. S. Norcross, Jr.7 and the laboratory study of manganese oxide flotation goes back a number of years .4 Broadly speaking, the difficulties encountered in the flotation of manganese ores are that the consumption of reagents is extremely high, the concentrate contains more silica than is desirable and the tailing losses are relatively high. An appreciable betterment on any of these scores would achieve a definite betterment in costs, quantity of minable ores, and quality of product. The microscope study discussed in this paper was made on samples from the Quinto mine, from the Ponupo mine, and from mill products at various stages of passage of the ore through the mill. The writers have had access to Company records and in particular to the petro¬graphic studies made on thin sections of ore by the late Professors R. J. Colony and Philip Krieger, of Columbia University. They acknowledge their debt to both of these men for the help derived from the reports. Manganese oxides are black, friable, smudging. It is, therefore, very difficult to judge operations by inspection. The mineralogy of manganese compounds seems to be confused, and the authors believe that many more minerals have been described than actually exist. Much of this difficulty is due to the prevalence of the structural conditions that will be discussed further in this paper; namely, the porosity and the friability of the ores, and the extremely intimate association of minute manganiferous mineral crystals with impurities of various sorts. By all odds the most important manganese mineral in Cuba is the one that in this paper is called "psilomelane." The name "psilomelane" has been used in so many different ways that the choice of it for this ore may not be approved by all. However, it seems to be the best under the circumstances. This mineral accounts for about 97 per cent of the manganese in the ores of the Quinto and Ponupo mines and in the mill feed. The remaining odd 3 per cent consists mostly of pyrolusite together with minor amounts of other manganese oxide minerals. If the reader finds that the basic information in a commodity chapter is insufficient, he can consult the appropriate sources in this chapter to find more detailed or more up-to-date information. In these days, technology develops so rapidly that this 4th edition will be somewhat out of date even by the time it is distributed. A comparison of this edition with the 3rd edition (1960) of Industrial Minerals and Rocks will clearly demonstrate how rapidly the scene changes. One of the best sources of new information, of course, is attendance at technical meetings. For example, the papers presented at the national and sectional meetings of AIME usually discuss new developments in the respective divisions of the society. Frequently this information is available in Preprints. In addition some are printed in Mining Engineering and/or the Transactions of the Society of Mining Engineers of AIME. Furthermore, other professional and trade journals contain articles pertinent to the field. A journal introduced in 1967, Industrial Minerals, published by the Metal Bulletin, Ltd., London, is an excellent source of information. The Mining Journal, Ltd., also in London, publishes a weekly journal, a Mining Magazine (monthly), and a Mining Annual Re- view. The latter covers the field from three aspects: (1) by commodities, (2) through technical developments, and (3) geographically. Other useful magazines and periodicals include Engineering and Mining Journal, Pit and Quarry, Rock Products, and World Mining, all published in the United States. In addition many new books related to industrial minerals have been published since the 3rd edition of Industrial Minerals and Rocks. Most of these, of course, are included in the bibliography of each chapter in this volume. Another excellent information source is the proceedings of the Forum on Geology of Industrial Minerals. This group, which held its 11th annual meeting in 1975, is sponsored by a state geological survey or another mineral agency on a rotational basis. The proceedings have been published by the various sponsors and are available as indicated in Table 1. Two major sources of basic industrial mineral and rock data in the United States, and also a good source for many foreign countries, are the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The two agencies publish many reports and maps on a variety of geo- logical and mining subjects. In addition, each agency has an indexed list of all their publications with a free service announcing new publications. (New Publications of the Geological Survey, U.S. Geological Survey, Washington, D.C. 20242) and New Publications-Bureau of Mines, Publications Distribution Branch, U.S. Bureau of Mines, 4800 Forbes Ave., Pittsburgh, Pa. 15213). The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) publishes annually Minerals Yearbooks which provide statistical data on mineral products including production, consumption, imports and exports, as well as information on new developments. Another very useful USBM series is called Mineral Facts and Problems. Editions were published in 1960, 1965, and 1970. Three other major series of publications by the Bureau are Information Circulars, Reports of Investigations, and Mineral Trade Notes. The latter is particularly good for news of foreign developments. A new Professional Paper No. 820 of the U.S. Geological Survey, 1973, summarizes data on the mineral resources of the entire country. The USGS, in cooperation with USBM, other Federal and various state agencies, has also prepared summary reports on mineral and water resources of given areas which include
