THE determination of suitable and safe annealing temperatures is one of the most important problems arising in the operation of a copper rolling mill. Certain of the larger mills have worked this problem out for themselves and in these mills the operation has become more or less standardized. In some of the mills pyrometers are used to measure the temperature of the annealing furnaces and careful watch is kept to see that overheating does not take place. In a considerable number of the mills, however, dependence is placed entirely on the judgment of the operator. The almost total lack of literature bearing on this subject seems sufficient warrant for the publication of this paper. The discussion of this subject naturally divides itself into two parts: (1) The effect of annealing temperature on physical properties; and (2) changes in the microstructure of refined copper due to cold rolling and annealing. I. THE EFFECT OF ANNEALING TEMPERATURE ON PHYSICAL PROPERTIES For the purpose of investigating this phase of the subject six test bars were selected, varying in oxygen content between the limits of 0.036 and 0.070 per cent. COAL CHARACARISTICS AND PREPREPARATION REQUIREMENTS Preparation and Market Specifications The national ambient air quality standards (NAAQS) established by the Environmental Protection Agency in 1977 require that when coal is burned, the environmental degradation should be a minimum. For this reason, even coal containing low ash and sulfur must be used in compliance with the NAAQS. The most important pollutants resulting from the combustion of coal are ash, SO2, and NOx gases, and the particulate matter escaping with the combustion gases. The ash is the residue left after complete combustion of coal. It results from the inorganic mineral matter existing in the coal before it is burned. The SO2 results from the combustion of inorganic and organic sulfur associated with the coal. The inorganic sulfur may occur as pyrite, marcasite, or as sulfate sulfur of mostly iron and calcium. The authorities disagree in the definition of organic sulfur in the coal. However, according to ASTM Standard D2492-77,1 the organic sulfur is that sulfur occurring in the coal after subtracting the sum of pyrite and sulfatic sulfurs from the total sulfur in the coal. The NOx gases are produced from high temperature oxidation of nitrogen in the coal that is released into the atmosphere. The particulate matter may consist of fly ash and unburned coal. Selective Mining The cleaning of coal from included ash and sulfur-bearing materials should start at the working faces of surface or underground mines. This can be done by (1) mining only those seams which meet certain quality standards, (2) not mining sections of the seams which may cause deterioration in overall quality of the mined coal, and (3) using a mining method that allows selective mining of coal areas or horizons either underground or on the surface. Since these steps improve the coal quality before the coal reaches the preparation plant, they can be considered to constitute precleaning of coal. During the exploration and development stage of a mine, core and channel samples taken from the coal seam are used to determine (1) petrographic analysis and physical properties,2 (2) character of roof and floor of the seam, 3,4 (3) character and quality of impurities,5 (4) proximate and ultimate analysis, and (5) washability characteristics. However, all of these parameters are subject to considerable variation even within the same seam during the advance of the coal face. This creates a problem in meeting the market demand for coal quality if the coal is to be shipped directly from the mine. If the mining operation is large enough, special blending silos or mechanical blending systems may have to be used to provide uniform quality to the market. Nearly 75 per cent of the total coke production in the United States in 1940 was consumed in blast furnaces. In 1939 the percentage was 69.9, and in 1938 it was 61.3. To produce a net ton of pig iron 1757 lb. of coke was required in 1940 and 1760 lb. in 1939. These figures indicate how dependent the production of pig iron is upon the production of coke. The rate of iron production is in some measure influenced by the physical and chemical characteristics of the coke. Blast-furnace operators believe that the physical properties of coke profoundly influence the operation of the furnace. Although it is true that coke of a wide variety of physical properties is used in American blast furnaces, the periodic fluctuation of these properties is one of the causes of irregularity of blast-furnace operation. The purpose of this paper is to present a broad picture of the physical properties of by-product coke that are generally considered to be important by coke-oven and blast-furnace operators. Effects of the kind of coal used, the preparation of the coal, the rate of coking, and other factors will be considered. Of all these variables, the kind of coal used is by far the most important. In this discussion use will be made of the method of coal classification by rank' standardized by the American Society for Testing Materials. Although this method of classification has been an American stand¬ard for several years, it has not been given the attention it deserves, especially in connection with the selection of coal for production of coke. Despite the fact that many producers of blast-furnace coke are limited to some particular source or sources of coal, a good understanding of the principles involved in setting up the standard method of classification may lead to a better appreciation of the causes of changes in coke characteristics. Furthermore, where it is necessary to select new coals as a substitute for the original supply, this method of classification can be of great assistance. The data presented have been gathered from many sources, but no attempt has been made to cover the vast literature. Instead, some of the more important data have been selected to show how coals and their carbonization affect some of the physical properties of coke. It must be emphasized that generalizations concerning the behavior of coking coals are presented and that individual coals may vary widely from the specific behavior depicted. Nevertheless, it is believed that the data illustrate certain typical behaviors. Neither was it possible to cover completely all the factors involved; for example, the macroscopic constituents of coal are believed to have important effects on the physical properties of coke, but since there is little information available for such study, and since vitrain, clarain, and durain are neither

Proceeding from statistical data on the development of waste volume, an endeavour was made to characterise waste materials with regard to the applicability of treatments based on mineral processing. Many types of waste are characterised by a high heterogeneity. The separation processes used for processing raw minerals can also be used for separation of various waste mixtures. For some waste mixtures, differences in properties can be utilised for separation which are mostly less distinctive for raw minerals. State-of-the-art technology is illustrated with selected Examples.

The Paleoproterozoic Hitura Ni-Cu deposit in western Finland is in an ultramafic igneous complex composed of two subvertical plug-shaped bodies embedded in intensely migmatised felsic gneisses. The ultramafic complex is not far from a north-south trending graphitic and sulphidic gneiss zone interpreted to be a primary sulphide-graphite unit in the metasedimentary sequence. The sulphide accumulation exists as a zone parallel to the contact of the northern ultramafic body. The ultramafic rock types, now mainly serpentinites, have primarily been olivine adcumulates in the core grading to olivine orthocumulates and pyroxenites towards the margins. Coarse-grained felsic pegmatite veins injected serpentinite where they now exhibit prominent zoned alteration rims of chlorite, antophyllite and talc. The serpentinite core of the body was primarily an olivine adcumulate derived from a tholeiitic or high-Mg basalt parental magma with about 11 wt % MgO. Metamorphism and alteration have totally changed the igneous mineral compositions and the rock types are serpentinites (from olivine adcumulates), ambhibole-bearing serpentinites and amphibole-chlorite rocks (from pyroxenites). As the result of CO2 alteration talc is an accessory mineral throughout the serpentinite. Like silicates, also sulphide minerals are altered. In the core of the body the low-grade sulphide dissemination still reveals primary igneous interstitial forms. The core sulphides are now mackinawite, pentlandite and valleriite instead of primary igneous pyrrhotite and pentlandite derived from Mss. At the marginal zone the heavy dissemination and net-textured sulphides display pyrrhotite-pentlandite-magnetite intergrowths with magnetite films along cleavage of sulphides, mackinawite in pentlandite and exsolution textures of different low-temperature pyrrhotite phases as the result of alteration processes. Mechanically weak rocks, complicated structures and textures of the ore, magnetite and mackinawite intergrowths in pentlandite and readily-floating MgO silicates cause problems in exploitation of the deposit. INTRODUCTION The British mining industry comprises 228 nationalised coal mines producing some 113 million tonnes of deep mined coal and employing 242,600 persons of whom 185,200 work below ground. There are in addition 174 small privately-owned coal mines employing 1500 persons underground and producing 1.5 million tones of coal. In the non-coal sector there are 108 privately-owned mines producing some 20 different minerals, including tin, wolfram, fluorspar, potash, rock salt, china clay, ball clay and fireclay. There are currently 4,100 persons employed in these mines of whom 2,346 are employed below ground. One mine producing potash employs 870 persons of whom 465 are underground workers. Since 1975 all matters relating to the health and safety of persons at work and of the general public who are exposed to industrial hazards have come within the purview of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). The Mines and Quarries Inspectorate (MQI) is a constituent part of that organisation and enforces legislation applicable to all mines and quarries. The National Radiological Protection Board (NRPB) is a statutory and independent body that was established in 1970 to advance knowledge and provide information and advice about radiological protection. The NRPB has an agency agreement with HSE to provide advice and services relating to radiological protection, including protection against exposure to radon decay products in mines. There are as yet no statutory requirements controlling exposure to this source of radiation in Britain. Investigations for the presence of radon in British coal mines were begun in the mid 195Os. The concentrations found were of low order, typically around 2 pCi/l (Duggan et al., 1968). This was not surprising since big coal mines are well ventilated to control methane and airborne dust and it is now generally accepted that radon and its decay products do not constitute a health hazard in British coal mines. At one or two small mines where igneous intrusions were in close proximity to the coal workings, slightly higher readings were recorded. The MQI then commissioned NRPB to make investigations at metalliferous mines and in these much higher readings were detected. It was later agreed that the NRPB should undertake a survey of all non-coal mines in Britain to establish the extent of the problem. This survey was conducted mainly in 1973, (Strong et al.,1975) and follow-up surveys at various mines have since been conducted by the MQI. These investigations revealed that radon readings could be high in mines producing tin, haematite and fluorspar. Some small mines working other minerals in the same localities also showed high readings. More recently owners have been making environmental measurements at mines where there was some cause for concern. LEGISLATION AND RADIATION STANDARDS As a result of the survey work for MQI the Board in 1975 recommended an occupational limit of 4 WLM in a year from radon decay products together with a programme of radiological supervision (Strong et al., 1975). The MQI accepted the recommendation and advised employers and employees that the 4 WLM limit should be adopted. The limit corresponds to a concentration of 0.3 WL, equivalent to 30 pCi/l of radon-222 in equilibrium with the decay products, and was in accordance with an earlier recommendation by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP, 1959). ICRP recommendations are usually endorsed in Britain. It was recognised that some years would probably be required to achieve general compliance, and this is proving to be the case. Some confusion has been caused in Britain by the conflict between successive Euratom Directives on this and other standards of safety. As relative newcomers to the Community, we were not affected by earlier Directives, but the situation is different now. In 1959, the Commission of the European Communities provisionally recommended a maximum permissible concentration for radon-222 and daughters of 3 x 10-7 µCi/cm3, which corresponds to 300 pCi/l (CEC, 1959). The number was affirmed in 1962 (CEC, 1962) and reaffirmed in 1966 (CEC, 1966) but without any specification of the state of equilibrium. In 1976, the CEC again recommended 300 pCi/l, but on this occasion, the daughters were assumed to be present in the same quantities as in unfiltered air (CEC, 1976): this implies 40 WLM a year in poorly-ventilated mines. The formula is repeated in the latest version of the Directive (CEC, 1980), but the value is now said to be an interim one because it might not ensure compliance with the appropriate dose limit. ICRP (1955) recommended 300 pCi/l in equilibrium with the decay products in 1955 and reduced this value to 30 pCi/l for unfiltered air in 1959 (ICRP, 1959), endorsed it for equilibrium conditions in 1976 (ICRP, 1976), and held to it until 1980: these values imply respectively 40 and 4 WLM a year. The recent recommendation of the ICRP (1980) that the annual limit of intake for the decay products should be 0.02 J in a year corresponds to 5 WLM, but there is a rider that reduction should be made for exposure to gamma rays and long-lived airborne radioactivity. An allowance of 20% is suggested for uranium mines, implying 4 WLM a year for the decay products. The

The specific effect of various rare-earth metals on the room- and elevated-temperature properties of magnesium has been evaluated. Alloys containing didymium exhibit the highest tensile and compressive strengths at room and elevated temperatures. All the rare-earth metals increase the creep resistance of extruded magnesium at temperatures in the range of 400° to 600°F, but the degree of enhancement depends on the temperature and on the concentration of the added metal. THE effects of rare-earth metals on the properties of sand-cast magnesium were discussed in some detail in earlier paper by the author.' The present paper deals with the effect of the same alloying elements on the properties of extruded magnesium. This investigation also had as its aim the development of a wrought alloy having a better combination of room-temperature strength and ductility and elevated-temperature strength and creep resistance than is found in magnesium-Mischmetal-manganese alloys, which have been reported earlier.2-5 The only known attempt to study wrought magnesium alloys containing pure cerium instead of Mischmetal was made by Mellor and Ridley.6 They found that in the form of rolled bars there is a definite, optimum cerium content for creep resistance at 200 °C and that the creep resistance of these alloys at 200 °C is significantly Improved by heat treatment at 550" to 580"C. In the present investigation the compositional variation in mechanical properties of the following alloy systems is presented: I—magnesium-Misch-metal. 2—magnesium-cerium-free Mischmetal. 3— magnesium-didymium. 4—magnesium-cerium. 5— magnesium-lanthanum. Alloys containing predominately praseodymium are not included in this series because of the lack of this material. Experimental Procedures The alloying ingredients used in preparing the alloys described herein are the same as those reported in the earlier paper.' Cerium-free Mischmetal is the rare-earth mixture remaining when the cerium is removed from Mischmetal, which contains all the rare-earth metals as they occur naturally in mon-azite sand, the ore from which Mischmetal is produced. Removal of both cerium and lanthanum from Mischmetal leaves what is commonly called "didym-ium," consisting predominantly of neodymium and praseodymium. Although the composition of the particular batch of each metal used may differ somewhat from the analysis presented previously, these differences are not great enough to warrant repeat- ing the specific composition of each material. The electrolytic magnesium used as the starting material in these alloys has the same typical analysis as that given in the earlier paper.' The alloys were prepared in small laboratory melts applying all the necessary precautions for alloying rare-earth metals with magnesium described by Marande.' Most melts were large enough to cast one 3 in. diam billet 10 in. long. In a few cases, particularly the didymium-containing alloys, the lack of sufficient amounts of the rare-earth metal limited the size of the billet to 6 to 8 in. All billets were scalped to a diameter of 2 15/16 in. and faced to a length of 9 ¼ in. as limited by the size of the extrusion container. The alloys were extruded into ½ in. diam rod on a 500-ton direct-extrusion press using a 3 in. container. The details of the extrusion step are: billet preheat, 925°F (2 hr); container temperature, 900°F; die temperature, 900°F; extrusion speed, 10 ft per min; reduction ratio, 36:1; and percent reduction, 97.3. The lower melting point of alloys containing didymium' necessitated reduction of the extrusion speed to 5 ft per min in order to prevent hot shorting during extrusion. Adequate lengths were cropped from both ends of each extruded rod to assure that all the material used for tests was extruded under uniform conditions. Tensile and compressive properties at room temperature are reported in the several conditions of heat treatment. The ASTM designations are used to distinguish these conditions as follows: T5—Direct age at 400°F (16 hr) T4—Heat treat at 950°F (4 hr) for alloys containing didymium T4—Heat treat at 1050°F (4 hr) for all other alloys T6—T4 + age at 400 °F (16 hr) The lower heat-treating temperature for alloys containing didymium is necessitated by the lower melting point of these alloys. All heat treatments were conducted in electrically heated, circulating-air furnaces. A protective atmosphere containing 0.5 to 1.0 pct sulphur dioxide was used for the high temperature heat treatments. Tension and creep specimens 6 Yz in. long and compression specimens 1½ in. long were cut from the extruded rod. A reduced section of ? in. diam was machined on the tension specimens, whereas on the creep specimens a reduced section of 0.450 in. diam

I The South Platform of the Gippsland Basin is an extensive area of shallow basement covered by a relatively-thin Late Mesozoic-Cainozoic section. Although the sporadic exploration to-date has not resulted in any hydrocarbon discoveries, the area is under-explored and its taste potential has not yet been fully evaluated. The best potential appears to be in areas underlain by the Golden Beach Megasequence where structures are mainly related to basement fault blocks.

The federally owned Cape Breton Development Corporation (CBDC) mines approximately 2.5-3.0 Mt of coal per annum from its Phalen Colliery. As part of an ongoing process to become more commercially viable the Corporation has implemented changes in its support method, namely, the transition from traditional steel set inseam supports to roof bolts as primary support in the single entry longwall retreat drivages. During 1991 and 1992, a monitoring program was implemented by the Cape Breton Coal Research Laboratory (CBCRL) to determine the loading on support systems and ground reaction in the gateroads in front of the retreating longwall faces of the 4 East and 5 East panels at Phalen Mine. The 4 East gateroad had been supported by steel sets alone. The 5 East gateroad had been supported by steel sets as well as roof bolting and strapping of the gateroad roof. Steel sets in both gateroads were instrumented with strain gauges and load cells to record support reaction to the retreating face abutment pressure. Multipoint borehole extensometers and multipoint strain gauged roof bolts were installed in the gateroad roof to monitor strata displacement and bolt loading above the gateroad as the longwalls retreated. This paper describes the details of the instrumentation and monitoring techniques utilized during this program and discusses the results, trends and differences observed in the two differently supported access roadways. Work on future data acquisition instrumentation is also briefly described.

INTRODUCTION IT is 10. years this summer since the first of the contributions which it has been my privilege to make to the working tools of the hydrometallurgist was set at work, but a full description of what has come to be known as "Dorr Machinery" has never been published in the Transactions of the Institute, and it has been suggested to me that an account of the same would prove of interest to members, although most of those engaged in cyaniding and concentration are probably familiar with it. The account which I shall give of the development of the machines must be recognized as being written from the viewpoint mainly of my own local experience and not from that of one who was familiar with the general metallurgical practice throughout the world. Most advances in any art are conceived before the time is ripe for their development and any .invention which comes into general use will usually be found to have been tried out in a crude way and abandoned more than once. If the early experimenter went as far as the Patent Office, his work may serve no other purpose than to prevent the issuance of the broadest patent to those who later may develop a commercial process. The cyanide process in the United States early in 1904 was mainly confined to the leaching of dry crushed ores, both coarse and fine, and sand treatment of tailings from concentration and amalgamation. In the Black' hills some plants were crushing in cyanide solution, leaching sands and handling the slime by the well-known decantation process. Filter pressing, in use for some years in Australia,had been tried in several places in this country and the Moors process had been abandoned at Mercur after' a short run, but was doing good work at the mill of Lindbergh, Dorr & Wilson, at Terry, and being installed at Bodie and the Liberty Bell. A general feeling, however, still existed that, slimes were to be avoided when possible, on account of the losses in treatment and the difficulty of making a good leaching product when they were present in large amounts, especially when the crushing was done in cyanide solution.

PURE silver and silver-lead alloys have been studied as to their suitability for bearings.1-8 A review of the properties of thallium and the silver-thallium constitutional diagram was made by the author to analyze the possibilities of silver-thallium compositions for antifriction materials.† The silver-rich end of the diagram as reported in the literature9-11 was found to be sketchy and it was necessary to carry out considerable experimental work to arrive at definite conclusions. Some of the results of this work are reported in this paper. TEST MATERIALS In the beginning of the work, only fused alloys were investigated. Later, research [TABLE I. In preparing the fused alloys, care was taken to exhaust the toxic fumes caused by the thallium content. The compositions of the series of fused alloys are listed in Table I. The silver-thallium alloys were melted in clay-graphite crucibles and cast into preheated steel molds of 3/4-in. diameter. In the cast condition, they showed a cored structure, as indicated by the micrographs of Figs. I to 3. The etching reagent used was a mixture of 2 grams K2Cr2O7, 8 c.c. H2SO4, and 100 c.c. H2O. The cored structure is unsatisfactory for the type of corrosion resistance required for bearing applications, and homogenizing experiments were carried out at various temperatures, the results of which are shown in Figs. 4 through 8. The alloys with a lower thallium concentration, which were heated for 2 hr. at 525°C. show an almost completely homogenized solid solution type of structure. With higher thallium concentration, the homogenizing temperature was dropped to 475°C. to eliminate the formation of a liquid phase. It is evident that heating for 2 hr. at this temperature did not result in complete elimination of the cored structure. As would be expected, cold-working of the cast structure is an expedient in establishing equilibrium conditions. The fine homogeneous grain structure shown in Fig. 7 corresponds to the cold-worked area under the Rockwell ball penetration when the hardness was taken before heat-treatment. Agricolau: cited examples of gravity concentration, crude examples admittedly, being practiced over 3000 years ago. However, gravity concentration is not dead. Far from it. As recently as 1978 it was reported that the total mineral tonnage treated by this process in the United States was greater than that processed by flotation. "A major geomechanical study was conducted for one of the UAE onshore oil fields with the purpose of studying reservoir rock properties and stress distribution, based on which a 3D coupled reservoir geomechanical model was built. This model was later used for wellbore stability analysis and for analyzing the effect of fractures on future reservoir production performance, including fracture deformation and permeability evolution occurring due to reservoir depletion and resulting changes in local stress field. The subject of this study was a complex fractured Upper Cretaceous carbonate reservoir characterized by high degree of heterogeneity, both vertically and laterally. Wellbore instability related drilling problems were encountered while drilling the wells in this field. The problems were mainly in drilling the horizontal wells, including breakouts and mud losses. Experimental results of laboratory tests are summarized in this paper whereas wellbore stability analysis and formulation of a 3D geomechanical model that was built for that purpose is summarized in a sister paper (Part II).A suite of tests reported includes tensile strength, uniaxial and triaxial compression and permeability under stress at simulated reservoir conditions. All tested rocks have been grouped into twelve test units and reservoir geology, rock types and challenges related to designing a viable sampling and testing program for a big reservoir are discussed first followed by sample selection criteria and details of the testing program. All test units showed brittle behavior at zero confinement and some samples showed similar behavior at low confining stresses. With confining stress increase, the behavior gradually turned to plastic but some samples showed features of ductile behavior even at low confinement.Obtained experimental data have been summarized in the form of strength criteria and correlations. The Mohr-Coulomb strength equations were obtained for each test unit and also for the averaged values. It was noticed that triaxial compressive strength (TCS) increases with decreasing porosity or increasing density but their influence on TCS is getting smaller with confining pressure increase. Good correlation of porosity and density with Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio, unconfined compressive strength (UCS), friction angle, cohesion and tensile strength has been noticed and there was an increasing trend between the confining pressure and TCS. Rock type (mud or grain supported) was not influencing the TCS as much as porosity and density and the two lithologies encountered affected TCS approximately in the same way. These results and correlations are summarized and explained in this paper. They were further used in the numerical modelling part (Part II) of this paper, Hozayen et al. (2015). Manganese nodules cover great areas of deep ocean floor far from land, and have long been considered a major potential resource of nickel, copper, cobalt and perhaps manganese. A decade ago there was a period of intense evaluation of nodule fields, especially those lying between the Clarion and Clipperton Fracture Zones in international waters southeast of Hawaii. There, nodules are abundant and of high grade (average of 2.4% Ni+Cu+Co). The evaluation activity has since declined, but a recent agreement on lease boundaries among all interested parties may lead to a resurgence of work. Indeed, French and Japanese groups have pushed ahead with field and economic assessments.The Southwest Pacific, where there are large nodule fields in the waters of the Cook Islands and Kiribati, has seen considerable assessment of resources in the last ten years, especially through a major field programme of the Japanese Metal Mining Agency. The best prospect appears to be in the South Penrhyn Basin, in Cook Islands waters, where nodules are very abundant but of only moderate grade (1% Ni+Cu+Co). Using a cut-off of 5 kg of wet nodules per m2, Cronan (1989) and Cronan et al. (1989) have estimated the total resource to be a huge 110 million tonnes of Ni+Cu+Co.

"Short-term mine planning of open pits is an activity that has historically been carried out by hand. Typically, the use of computers has played little part in this type of mine planning. This paper describes the objectives and the procedures involved in short-term mine planning, comments on the type of computer systems available, and describes in detail a computer-aided short-term planning and scheduling system known as STEPS.IntroductionThe mine planning department of any o pen-pit mining operation performs a wide variety of different tasks. However, their primary concern is the preparation of detailed long-and short-term mine plans. These mine plan s will define the long-term operating strategies and definitive everyday working plan s for the ongoing development of the open pit.In this day and age, when operating costs have spiralled upwards due to inflation , and product revenues have decreased due to depressed economies and poor markets, it is vitally important for all aspects of the mining operation, including mine planning, to be efficient and cost effective.There are numerous options available for planning engineers when generating a mine plan. A cost effective mine plan must investigate all these options and select the optimum. When using manual planning techniques, it is often impossible to evaluate all the available options. To do this, and to produce an optimum mine plan, a computer is required.This paper discusses mine planning, with emphasis toward the short-term plan and comments on how the processes may be computerized. It also describes in detail, a computer software system called STEPS, which has been designed as an interactive graphics, computer-aided short -term mine planning and scheduling tool."

Pike River Coal Limited (PRCL) is developing the Pike River Coal Mine in the Paparoa Ranges of New ZealandÆs South Island. The mine is being developed to extract a coking coal deposit of the Brunner Seam, some 46 km northeast of Greymouth, using a combination of continuous miners, road-headers and hydraulic extraction.   The mining area is located within Department of Conservation (DOC) land and is adjacent to the escarpment of the Paparoa Range and the Paparoa National Park. The mine will use its elevation advantage to hydraulically flume coal from the working faces to the pit bottom area where it will be slurried to approximately 35 per cent density of solids and pumped down a slurry line to the coal prep plant some 10.5 km down the Pike River Valley. The coal will be sold on the export market as a high quality coking coal for international steel making.   PRCL faces significant challenges to achieving the goal of cost effective production. The remoteness, high rainfall (greater then 6 metres per year on average), temperature variation and restrictions on access to this subalpine environment have driven the project to develop some distinctive solutions. These include the establishment of survey control in such a difficult environment with vertical and sub-vertical rock faces, significant vegetation and steep slopes by using helicopter survey, aerial photography and LIDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) aerial survey. PRCL has also commenced designing the placement of the main ventilation fans in an underground chamber in the stone drive.

Long Island Rail Road’s (LIRR) service to New York City is limited to Penn Station on the West Side of Manhattan, which is operating at its practical capacity for the commuter railroad. This situation imposes serious considerations for future growth and limits the destination of many Long Island commuters. The East Side Access Project will provide a connection of the LIRR to the landmark Grand Central Terminal (GCT)on the East Side of Manhattan. The construction of the connection will require significant tunneling and underground work utilizing a variety of construction techniques. In Queens, the connection will require five soft ground tunnels using pressurized face tunnel boring machine. In Manhattan, the connection will require a series of rock tunnels and caverns connecting to two deep large station caverns under GCT to accommodate eight tracks with four platforms in a stacked configuration. The caverns housing train rooms are connected to the lower level of GCT where a large concourse will be provided. With a budget of $4.3 Billion, The East Side Access Project is the largest transportation project ever undertaken in New York City. This paper provides an overview of the project, discusses its environmental and the engineering challenges, and provides an insight into the design development to date.

The variability of gold mineralization in the Warrego Gold Pod is described by classical statistical techniques using sample distrib- utions and analysis of variance; and by the use of geostatistical variogram analysis to define the spatial variability and anisotropy of the mineralization. Comparison is made between declared mine production from the Nineteen Stope and a series of ore reserve estimates derived by manual, numerical and disjunctive kriging methods.
