IN a laboratory devoted to the furtherance of the science of communication, the breadth and variety of the problems encountered are challenging to a metallurgist. In my own long association with the Bell Telephone Laboratories, our metallurgical group has dealt with a vast number of alloys, both ferrous and nonferrous, and with many materials in the border range of metallic properties., The objectives of our design engineers embrace every phase of telephony, and the properties they desire in metals are generally unusual, frequently unique, and often conflicting. Commercial alloys have not always been available with properties to meet a special requirement in the telephone plant, and many alloys have had, therefore, to be custom-made. Anyone who has had the opportunity to observe the results of tests of all types on numerous such alloys, both commercially and specially produced, or who has taken part in the development of an alloy of some necessary, but new or unusual combination of properties, could not fail to be impressed by the frequency with which a desired goal has been reached or adequately approached through the presence of decimal quantities of alloying elements. Nor could One fail to be struck by the occasions when, conversely, of a minute amount Of impurity element has rendered an alloy useful. It is no exaggeration to state that the content be- hind the decimal point often spells success or fail-ure, and the critical content is sometimes far to the right of the decimal point as I shall later illustrate. The great effects of small additions have long been recognized and have, in fact, been described by many investigators. The importance of the minute, however, cannot be overemphasized. Therefore, in this discussion, I propose to illustrate for you some of the startling instances, drawn primarily from our own experiences, wherein small, even vanishingly small, proportions of stranger elements in otherwise common aggregates have com-pletely changed the customary pattern of behavior. No one property has a monopoly as to being dis-proportionately affected by minor elements. Nearly all properties are affected, but there is time here to include only a selected few. I have chosen, there-fore, three of general interest: strength, magnetic, and electrical properties. I shall inquire into both the mechanisms and consequences of these disproportionate effects and try to share with you the fascination and challenge of this field. Strength Properties of Lead and Lead Alloys To illustrate the effect of the minute on strength properties I have selected lead and its alloys, with which we have worked extensively for many years. Lead has the advantages of being available in quantity in a state of high purity and of being fairly easy to melt and fabricate without contamination to any extent detectable by the spectrograph. The Bungaroo Valley hosts a concealed Tertiary channel iron deposit (CID) along a 17 km stretch of its length. Bungaroo Valley is approximately 0.5 km wide upstream at its easternmost extent, and 3.5 km wide downstream where it joins the Jimmawarrada Creek. The valley follows the axial trace of an anticline that plunges gently to the southeast, and the CID infills the valley. Mineralisation extends to a depth of 230 m below the surface, and almost the entire deposit occurs below the water table. Bungaroo Valley cuts through the Buckland Hills and is bounded to the north and south by steep scarps capped with the resistant Dales Gorge Member of the Brockman Iron Formation. Basement rocks are believed to be mostly Wittenoom Formation shales and dolomites, with Mount McRae Shale and Mount Sylvia Formation also present. Deep, localised depressions appear at the base of the CID sequence towards the north edge of the upstream section of the valley, while downstream the basal CID contact is relatively flat and shallow. In both cases the profile of the CID surface closely mirrors that of the basal contact. The localised depressions seen in the upstream basal CID contact produce significant variations in CID thickness of up to 100 m over short strike distances. This uneven palaeotopography is most likely due to eddying and waterfalls forming within the riverbed prior to CID deposition during a time when the water table was much lower than at present. It may also be associated with possible karsting in an underlying dolomite unit and subsequent syn- or post-depositional collapse of the overlying CID. The irregular basal contact of the Bungaroo CID sequence has implications for mining in terms of pit design and resource accessibility.

The destruction of long-range order in Mg-Cd, has previously been thought to occur as a second order process. In the present work a variety of X-ray diffraction techniques are employed to show that in this case and in Mg-Cd alloys containing frorn 20 to 33 1/3 at. pct Mg the process more nearly resembles an ordinary first order phase transformation. It is found that the ordered alloy, which occurs as a single phase at lgw temperatures, transforms with increasing temperature into a Cd-enriched disordered (P) phase and an Mg-enriched ordered (a) phase. The interval over which these two phases coexist under apparently equilibrium conditiovs extends from 25" to 87°C content. At 33 1/3 at. pct Mg the two-phase region has disappeared. Measurement of the long range order parameter, s, for the ordered phase in MgCd, (from superlattice line intensities) shows that it disorders only very slightly before it is transformed into the p form. Kinetic experiments reveal that when the a phase is formed frorn the p phase by suitably quenching so as to suppress phase segregation, the transformation is essentially complete and the a phase has acquired its equilibrium value of S in less than 1 min. In an earlier investigation carried out in this Laboratory1 the rate of disordering of the MgCd3 superlattice was determined over an extensive range of temperature. The process was found to be first order and the rate constant, k, was established. At the lowest temperatures studied k was found to increase exponentially with temperature. At higher temperatures, however, it passed through a maximum and for the 100 deg interval below the point at which the superlattice was destroyed k was observed to decrease with increasing temperature. The various theoretical treatments1-3 of order-disorder phenomena lead to a negative temperature coefficient for k near the superlattice critical temperature but this region for MgCdB seemed unusually wide. Detailed analysis of the point indicated' that either the long-range order parameter, S, for MgCda varied with temperature in an anomalous way or the disordering in this instance is more complex than in the cases which have been treated theoretically. The original objective in the present work was simply to determine S vs temperature for MgCda to ascertain whether the disordering was in conformity with theoretical expectations.2° In an early stage of the work it was noted, however, that under equilibrium conditions ordered (a) and disordered (0) phases coexist in MgCd, over a considerable range of temperature. Since on thermo- dynamic grounds the coexisting phases must differ in composition, the investigation was enlarged to permit the compositions of the two phases in MgCd3 to be determined and to establish the extent of the two phase regions for alloys containing from 20 to 33 1/3 at. pct Cd.

Flotation of ores is a practical utilization of the energy that resides in the surfaces of solids and liquids. The best known manifestation of this energy is called surface tension; an equally important, though less apparent, phenomenon is adsorption. This paper reviews some of the recent investigations of these phenomena, and gives the results of certain experiments performed by the authors. Surface tension is a manifestation of energy having its seat at the bounding surface between the adjacent phases of a multiphase system. Thus, at the interface between a liquid and a gas, or between two immiscible liquids, or between a solid and a gas or a liquid, there are forces capable of doing work, their magnitude depending on the nature of the adjacent phases and the extent of the bounding area. These surface forces are inappreciable when the ratio of surface to volume of the adjacent phases is small, but they become powerful when this ratio becomes large, as it does when one of the phases is highly dispersed. Froth flotation, which consists in buoying solids heavier than water to the surface of water by means of gas bubbles, utilizes the force of surface tension to attach the solid particles to the gas bubbles and again to maintain the floating mass of bubbles as a more or less persistent froth at the surface of a pulp for a sufficiently long time to allow its removal. It follows from the second law of thermodynamics that the potential energy of a system in equilibrium is a minimum. Therefore a multiphase system, tending toward equilibrium, will arrange itself in such a way that the total energy of the interfaces will be the least possible. Self-diffusion in zinc has been used as an instrument for comparison of the absorption and sectioning techniques as a means of studying diffusion. Single crystal as well as poly-crystal samples were used asanda the temperature range of diffusion extended from 200° to 415°C. For temperatures above 200°C, the data indicate that the results obtained from the absorption technique agree with those obtained from the sectioning technique. The effect on the values of the diffusion coefficient of electroplating vs evaporation as a means of applying the tracer was investigated and no significant difference observed. It was found that an excess or deficiency of tracer did not materially affect the results obtained from the sectioning technique, but invariably caused errors with the absorption technique. NEARLY all self-diffusion experiments and many alloy diffusion experiments have employed radioisotopes as the instrument for following the diffusion. Of the various techniques in which radioisotopes are applicable, the two most widely used are the sectioning and absorption techniques. In the former, the diffusion coefficient is obtained from a curve of log concentration vs the square of the mean penetration depth. In the latter, the diffusion coefficient is calculated from a knowledge of the decrease in activity at the surface after diffusion. In spite of the importance of knowing the reliability of the diffusion data and the widespread use of these two techniques, they had not been directly compared experimentally on the same samples. Thus, such a comparison was worthwhile. The specific system chosen for this comparison was the self-diffusion of zinc, since the metal was readily obtainable in high purity, single crystals were easily grown, and the anisotropic features of the diffusion added an additional factor of interest to the comparison. Self-diffusion in both single and polycrystals was investigated, since the possibility existed that grain boundaries and grain boundary diffusion might produce different effects for the different techniques. Also, the effects of electroplating vs evaporation as a means of applying the radioactive tracer, and the effects of applying an excess or deficiency of tracer material were studied. The general experimental procedures and the mathematical analyses of both techniques have been described previously in some detail, and only those points essential to an understanding of the present work will be discussed here. The mathematical analysis of the sectioning data requires only a knowledge of the solution of Fick's equation. where C,, is the initial concentration, C is the concentration at depth x, D is the diffusion coefficient, and p is the absorption coefficient of the solvent metal for the radiation from the solute. Having obtained F from the experiment, the value of z can be read from a plot of F vs In z, and D can then be calculated if is known. The necessity of knowing the absorption coefficient causes most of the criticism of the absorption technique. It is very difficult to measure accurately under the conditions existing in the diffusion experiment, but it is absolutely necessary, as will be indicated briefly later. Portions of this problem have been discussed in detail elsewhere." The difficulties involved in the measurement of the absorption coefficient arise from three principle factors: the physical characteristics of the absorber, the geometry, and complex radiation spectra. Many producers of by-product coke have spent considerable time and given considerable thought to the use of a substitute for low-volatile coal as an admixture with high-volatile coking coal for charging high-temperature by-product coke ovens. Generally speaking, there are two principal reasons for this, one being occasioned by the lack, in certain localities, of low-volatile coal delivered at a cost sufficiently low to permit its use, and another being the desirability of finding a substitute product with a delivered cost lower than the cost of the low-volatile coal. It was for the first of these reasons that the Colorado Fuel and Iron Corporation was particularly interested in this subject. This paper deals with the experimental work and the results obtained by that company in producing and using low-temperature char. Overcoming Defects in Coke from Colorado Coals Colorado coking coals are all of the high-volatile type and were all laid down during the Cretaceous period, which makes them something like 80 million or so years younger, geologically, than eastern coals. They behave, when coked alone, something like the Pittsburgh-seam coals. They make a very brittle, highly cross-fractured, fingery coke of fair shatter value but quite low in resistance to abrasion. Mixed with a low-volatile coking coal such as Poca- hontas or certain Oklahoma coals, they make a coke that is equal to virtually any of the eastern cokes. The inferior quality of Colorado coke has long been recognized, and a considerable amount of time, effort and money has been spent upon investigations of means for improving its physical properties. While it has been found that some improvement in quality of coke can be secured by the adjustment and control of such variables as pulverization, moisture content, oven temperature and bulk density of charge, and through the addition of certain inert materials such as pulverized coke breeze, pitch, high-volatile noncoking or semicoking coal, the benefits so gained have been comparatively small. There are no low or medium-volatile coking coals available within a reasonable freight-cost distance. Therefore a substitute for low-vol-atile coal was developed through low-tem-perature carbonization—or, more correctly speaking, through the partial devolatiliza-tion—of high-volatile coals. The blending of this lower volatile char with the high-volatile coking coal distinctly improves the quality of coke made from Colorado coal. There is nothing especially new about this idea. In 1908 a Japanese patent was taken out by Kotaro Shimomura, whose claim was: The method of making a nonfingery coke out of bituminous coals, without using natural coals of low-volatile matter; according to which a certain coal is heated at a temperature between about 300°C. and about 600°C. so as to leave about 15 to 25 per cent volatile matter in the coal; this coal is mixed with the

The mechanical properties of magnesium-alloy castings are greatly improved by grain refinement, and at present considerable attention is being paid to methods of obtaining fine-grained castings. One method of achieving this end is the use of proper melting and superheating techniques. These have been employed com-rnercially to a great extent, but no comprehensive study of the subject appears to have been published at present. Numerous investigations found in the literature include some reference to superheating techniques,1"4 and Achenbach, Nippcr and Piwowarsky,% ased principally on thermal analysis, ascribe the grain-refilling action of superheating to the influence of solid foreign particles or dissolved gases present in the melt upon the course of crystallization. The primary purpose of this paper is to present the principal facts concerning the cffect of superheating on grain size of magilesium alloys. .ittempts are also made to explain the experimental results in terms of a general hypothesis. The investigations are limited chiefly to common commercial casting alloys. In order to carry on this work, it was necessary to determine the factors influencing grain size and to develop a proper technique for the preparation of samples. Thc preliminary tests made by the author indicated that the grain size of magnesium alloys resulting from the solidification of a melt is determined by alloy composition, presence of impurities, rate of cooling during solidification, thermal history of the melt and to some extent the structure of the charge used. The rate of cooling is in turn dependent upon the mass of the melt, pouring temperature, and dimensions, properties and temperature of the mold into which the melt is poured. The final grain size of the alloys is still further modified by heat-treatment subsequent to casting. It is not within the scope of the present paper to discuss all of these factors, and it would suffice to note here that when equal amounts of magnesium alloys are prepared from the same alloying materials, melted in graphite crucibles under the same thermal conditions, then cast into graphite molds at a constant temperature, the resultant solids have the same grain size. By maintaining all other factors constant, it is thus possible to vary thermal conditions of a melt and to examine the grain size of resultant castings. "The Volvo BM 861 U articulated truck is one of the few underground diesel units manufactured by an organization which shares the same corporate roof as the engine manufacturer. As a consequence, the unit has provided an opportunity for the characteristics of the entire system- turbocharged aftercooled engine, transmission and exhaust scrubber- to interact to minimize emission levels. The performance of the components of the system, as evaluated by full-scale dynamometer testing, is summarized. The over-all effect of the various innovations was a 38% reduction in the recommended ventilation level over that of the bare engine.IntroductionThe Mining Research Laboratories of Energy, Mines and Resources Canada is required, as part o f the certification service of the Canadian Explosive Atmosphere s Laboratory, to test the exhaust emissions of diesel engines, and to recommend appropriate amounts of fresh ventilating air to minimize the risks to health of underground personnel working with, or in the vicinity of, such diesel engines. Volvo BM AB of Sweden made application for the certification of the BM 861 U truck during a period in which EMR personnel were engaged in a number of research projects concerned with improving the environment in dieselized mines. One such avenue of research was the venturi or high-energy scrubber; as the BM 861 U was equipped with this type of scrubber , EMR and Volvo BM agreed to cooperate in a considerably more extensive investigation than would be normal for a certification application. The outcome of some of this research is summarized in this paper."

Two numerical methods are presented JOT solving the equations Jor one-dimensional, multiphase /low in porous media. The case oF variable physical properties is included in the Formulation, although gravity and capillarity are ignored. Both methods are analyzed mathematically, resulting in upper and lower bounds for the ratio of time step to mesh spacing. The methods are applied to two- and three-phase waterflooding problems in laboratory-size cores, and resulting saturation and pressure distributions and production histories are presented graphically. Results oJ the tuo-phase flow problem are in agreement with the predictions of the Buckley-Leuerett theory. Several three-phase flow problems are presented which consider variations in the water injection rate and changes in the initial oil-and ujater-saturation distributions. The results are different physically from the two- phase case; however, it is shown that the Buckley-Lez~erett theory can accurately predict fluid interlace velocities and displacing-fluid frontal snturations for three-phase flow, providing the correct assumptions are made. The above solutions are used as a basis JOT et~aluuting the numerical methods with respect to machine time requirements and allowable time step for a fixed mesh spacing. INTRODUCTION Considerable progress has been made in recent years in obtaining numerical solutions of the equations for two-phase flow in porous media. Douglas, Blair and Wagner2and McEwenll present different methods for solving the one-dimensional case for incompressible fluids with capillarity (the former using finite differences, the latter with an approach based upon characteristics). Fayers and Sheldon4 and Hovanesian and Fayers8 have extended these studies to include the effects of gravity. West, Garvin and Sheldon, l4 in a pioneer paper, treat linear and radial systems with both capillarity and gravity and they also include the effects of compressibility. Douglas, Peaceman and Rachford3 consider two-dimensional, two-phase, in compressible flow with gravity and capillarity and Blair and Peaceman1 have extended this method to allow for compressible fluids. No one, however, has examined the case of three-phase flow, even for the relatively simple case of one-dimensional flow of incompressible fluids in the absence of gravity and capillarity. In obtaining a numerical technique for simulating forward in situ combustion laboratory experiments, Gottfried5 has developed a method for solving the one-dimensional, compressible flow equations with any number of flowing phases. Gravity and capillarity are not included in the formulation. The method has been used successfully, however, for two- and three-phase problems in a variable-temperature field with sources and sinks. This paper examines the algorithm of Gottfried more critically. Two numerical methods are presented for solving the one-dimensional, multi-phase flow equations with variable physical properties. Both methods are analyzed mathematically, and are used to simulate two- and three-phase waterflooding problems. The numerical solutions are then taken as a basis for comparing the utility of the methods.

For many years the problem of increasing ultimate recovery of oil from a reservoir has been a subject of interest to the oil industry. At present, a standard secondary recovery technique is to flood the reservoir with water once natural forces of the system are depleted. The permeability characteristics of the rock, together with interfacial forces which exist between the two fluids and the porous material. allow only part of the oil in the rock formation to be recovered by the water-flooding process. Laboratory experiments have shown that when detergents are added to the flooding water, the flow properties of oil in a porous rock arc improved. This improvement results in greater oil recovery. Even though higher recoveries are obtained using detergents, the extra cost associated with the method may make it economically unsatisfactory. To establish economic feasibility requires experimental laboratory measurement of fluid and rock properties together with a calculational procedure to predict field results. Pilot tests in the field may also be required. This paper presents a mathematical procedure for predicting detergent flood behavior. A number of reasonable simplifying assumptions are made to obtain a tractable system of equations. The resulting method may be regarded as a generalization of Buckley-Lev-crett' theory to solve simultaneously for water saturation and detergent concentration profiles. Consequently this type of calculation can be used in much the same manner as Buckley-Leverett theory is used to evaluate a water flood. The mathematical method employed is the so-called method of characteristics for solving hyperbolic partial differential equations. This application of the method is instructive because several other problems in reservoir analysis may be analyzed in a similar manner. FLUID FLOW EQUATIONS The flow behavior of oil and water without detergent through porous reservoir rock is usually expressed by Darcy's law and a continuity equation for each phase. Fluid viscosity is denoted by 11, p is the density, 4 is porosity, and I the time. The subscripts w and o refer to water and oil. The capillary forces in the system lead to a difference in pressure between phases. This may be expressed by the relation: Pm -P0 =Pc(S).........(5) The capillary pressure? P,, is determined experimentally as a function of saturation. DETERGENT BALANCE EQUATION Addition of detergent to the water phase affects the flow properties of the system. Capillary pressure and relative permeability become functions of detergent concentration, c, as well as fluid saturation. That is: P--P (S,c) and k,,,.- - -- k,,,. At low oil saturation values, the presence of detergent reduces capillary pressure and reduces the relative permeability ratio. Detergents are surface-active and adsorb on rock surfaces. The mechanism of hardening in heat-treatable zirconium alloys was foUNd to be analogous to that for titanium alloys. Zirconium containing a relatively large addition of a ß -stabilizing element such as molybdenum or columbium can be hardened by the following transformation: Lean alloys, having insufficient alloy content to retain ß at room temperature are hardened by the following transformation: Application of these findings in Zr-Mo-Sn and Zr-Nb-Sn alloys produced strengths as high as 190,000 psi with reasonable ductility. PRIOR research on zirconium alloys has been concerned with development of greater strengths and creep resistance by solid-solution hardening or by dispersion hardening. Although solution and aging heat treatments had been applied earlier to zirconium alloys, quenching frequently produced low ductility. The possibility that the ß-to-w transformation, discovered earlier in titanium alloys,' might also occur in zirconium alloys and cause low ductility was considered, and, indeed, was found as predicted2 to be the case. In the earliest experiments, the heat-treatment response of titanium, too, was disappointing. However, by avoiding the formation of the embrittling w phase, it became practical to obtain room-temperature strengths higher than 180,000 psi, with elongation values of 10 pct.3 Based on the present concept of titanium heat treatment, the principal requirement for a heat-treatable zirconium alloy is that it contains a certain minimum amount of one or more ß -stabilizing elements. Only molybdenum, columbium, and tantalum, when present in sufficient amounts, are known to stabilize ß zirconium to room temperature during rapid cooling from the ß field. Tantalum was undesirable because of its high thermal-neutron cross section. Aluminum and tin are effective a stabilizers, but aluminum has been shown to seriously decrease the corrosion resistance of simple zirconium alloys in hot water. Therefore, for the present study, tin was used as the stabilizer addition. The alloys selected for this evaluation are presented in Table 1 along with their analyses and ß-transus temperatures. Since early in 1916, when it became apparent that the steel industry of the United States could not depend for the duration of the war on several important foreign sources of manganese and might have to depend entirely on domestic ores, the U. S. Geological Survey, with the assistance of several cooperating organizations, has made a comprehensive investigation of domestic manganese resources. The work has included field studies in a number of states well as annual, quarterly, and monthly canvasses among operators concerning current and future production. In order that the interested public might have access to the important results of the studies, preliminary reports concerning the field work as well as periodic summaries of production were issued as promptly as possible. Although numerous summaries of production l2, l3, l4 have been prepared from time to time for the use of the several boards and committees responsible for the conduct of the war, it has been thought for some months that those engaged in the industry, as well as others, might be interested in a preliminary summary of the accumulated geologic and production data. The cessation of hostilities, in November, 1918, probably detracts from the usefulness of much of the material that is here presented, but apart from the historic interest in the performance of an important industry in war time, there is a possibility that some of the conclusions may be helpful to those who continue to exploit domestic deposits, as well as to those who wish to measure the country's independence in mineral supplies. Appropriate final geologic reports are being prepared by the geologists who did the field work. The present authors, having done but a small part of the recent field work, acknowledge with great appreciation the use of preliminary and unpublished reports and the cordial informal cooperation of the following geologists in the preparation of this paper: F. THIS paper is a review of the published literature on research in coal geology, principally exclusive of resource studies, which appeared or became available during 1950 and the latter part of 1949. This report is not to be construed as being complete. The papers referred to in the bibliography are those among many more, which were read either in full or in abstract. Undoubtedly other papers were published which either escaped the author's notice or were not available to him. Those which were seen in abstract only (about one fourth of those listed) were not available in time for the inclusion of more than a notice. An outline of all papers listed in the bibliography has been arranged by subjects and reasonable subdivisions with some papers cited under more than one subject. Most papers are indexed according to the principal subject of discussion or research only as to an unusual or noteworthy section of the entire report. There will likely be some disagreement as to the quality or merit of some of the papers selected and the specialist may be supercritical of the outline or organization of papers in his field. It may be that attention has occasionally been drawn to papers reporting old information or conclusions of questionable value. Conferences and Meetings One of the best indications of the growing interest in coal geology problems in the United States is the increasing number of times this field has been the focus of attention at conferences and meetings. Notable among these are the joint meeting of the Society of Economic Geologists and the Geological Society of America at El Paso, November 1949, at which the principal thesis was concerned with low rank carbonaceous fuel deposits, especially of western United States. Among the papers given which are already available were those presented by Barghoorn,'" Parry? Roe? and Parks."' At the annual meeting of the Botanical Society of America in New York, December 1949, a joint meeting of the Paleobotanical and Microbiological Sections was held for which a symposium on Microbiology in Relation to the Geologic Accumulation of Organic Complexes was organized. Publication of the six papers presented by Ralph G. H. Siu, Elso S. Barghoorn, Irving Breger, Claude E. ZoBell, James M. Schopf, and A. C. Thayson is anticipated. At the regular meetings of the Paleobotanical Section at the same time, several other papers of interest reported on coal ball studies, partial coalification of petrified wood, and floras. In Chicago, April 1950, a symposium on Applied Paleobotany was held by the Society of Economic Paleontologists and Mineralogists in conjunction with the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. The five papers presented at this meeting dealt with the use of Paleozoic plant microfossils for stratigraphic work, J. M. Schopf, Devonian-Missis-sippian fossils of the black shales, Aureal T. Cross, Mesozoic plants of stratigraphic value, Th. Just, plant microfossils of the Tertiary, L. R. Wilson, and studies of the Brandon lignite, Elso S. Barghoorn. Early publication of these in the Journal of Paleontology is expected. The Nova Scotia Research Foundation and the Nova Scotia Dept. of Mines sponsored an excellent 3-day conference in June 1950, which dealt with several aspects of coal geology. Papers on coal classification, P. A. Hacquenbard, structure and sedimentation problems in Nova Scotia, T. B. Haites, new techniques of thermal analysis, W. L. White-head, geochemical investigations of Nova Scotia coals, Irving Breger, the role of fossil plant spores in coal correlation and the stratigraphy of the coal-bearing strata of the Appalachian Region, Aureal T. Cross, were given. Some discussions of these papers by those in attendance were recorded, and the entire proceedings is being prepared for publication. In September 1950, an unusual 3-day field conference was held by the Ohio and West Virginia Geological Surveys under the sponsorship of the Coal Geology Committee. This study of the stratigraphy, sedimentation, and nomenclature of the Upper Pennsylvanian and Permian coal-bearing strata of southeastern Ohio, southwestern Pennsylvania, and northern West Virginia was augmented by two discussions on associated rocks (clays and shales) and stratigraphic nomenclature at Wheeling and Morgantown, West Va. An extensive guidebook was prepared, and transcriptions of the Morgantown meeting were made. As a follow-up of the September field conference, a round-table discussion was held on this general topic at a special open meeting of the Coal Research Committee in conjunction with the November meeting of the Geological Society in Washington. Exploratory research was conducted to ascertain the feasibility of recovering beryllium from Spor Mountain, Utah, ore by the sodium fluosilicate (Na2SiF6) method used industrially for processing beryl. Na2SiF6 requirements to form water-soluble salts of beryllium were determined for three different samples--two clayey ores containing 0.6 and 1.3 pct BeO, respectively, and a calcareous ore containing 0.6 pct BeO. The ores were sintered with Na2SiF6 at 750° C for 3 hours. About 80 pct of the beryllium was rendered water soluble by sintering the 0.6-pct BeO ores with 30 and 40 lb Na2SiF6 per lb BeO contained in clayey and calcareous ores, respectively. The higher grade 1.3-pct BeO clayey ore required only 20 lb Na2SiF6 per lb BeO to solubilize over 80 pet of the beryllium. As the 0.6-pct BeO clayey ore was possibly the most representative of the deposit as presently delineated, leach liquor prepared from this sample was treated to recover beryllium salts. About 60 pet of the beryllium contained in the ore was recovered as beryllium hydroxide, which then was calcined to yield a 99-pct BeO final product by means of the following operations: (1) Sintering with Na2SiF2, (2) leaching with water, (3) precipitating crude Be(OH)2 by adding NaOH, (4) filtering to separate the hydroxide from the NaF solution, (5) redissolving the crude Be(OH)2 in excess NaOH, (6) filtering to reject caustic-insoluble impurities, and finally (7) boiling the Na2BeO2 filtrate from (8) to precipitate pure Be(OH)2. Reagent consumption was 49 lb Na2SiF6 per lb BeO recovered and 17 lb NaOH per lb BeO.

The Lake Superior Region has been a producer of iron ore for over 150 years. Early mining operations concentrated on direct shipping ores, which are the result of post-depositional upgrading principally by deep weathering. As direct shipping ore reserves became depleted, the focus changed to the production of iron ore pellets from taconite. The post-depositional processes responsible for upgrading taconite are regional metamorphism, contact metamorphism and hydrothermal processes (Clout and Simonson, 2005). While these processes are important in iron ore genesis they can also contribute to liberation problems and in some instances reduced pellet quality (Han, 2004). Low-grade metamorphic mineral assemblages can negatively impact liberation and pellet quality. Low-grade iron formation may contain a suite of carbonate minerals including ankerite, dolomite, kutnohorite, siderite and magnesiosiderite. Variation in the distribution and composition of siderite and magnesiosiderite makes controlling the MgO content of pellets difficult. Carbonate minerals also require calcination in the pellet induration process, which requires additional heat to be added to the system, slowing down the induration process and reducing throughput. Prediction of carbonate mineralogy and carbonate mineral chemistry is an important goal of ore characterisation for pelletising properties. Contact metamorphism causes changes in mineralogy and grain size (Klein, 1973; Gunderson and Schwartz, 1962). Increasing the grain size of magnetite should improve its liberation characteristics. However, plant grinding targets may not allow the coarse-grained, more easily liberating magnetite ores to increase throughput and can actually result in decreased throughput due to recirculation. While magnetite and martite ores are well understood (Lukey, Johnson and Scott, 2007) late open-space filling microplaty haematite ores are not. These ores, while composed of similar minerals, have a unique genesis that results in fine grain size and complex textures that present liberation challenges and often make interpreting laboratory metallurgical test results more difficult.

Deposits of iron are widely scattered in the folded Cretaceous rocks and the associated igneous intrusives of Puerto Rico. Most of them are too small for commercial development, but a few have aroused some scientific and economic interest, among them the large body of residual limonite at the west end of the island near Mayagüezl-6 (Fig. 1) and the mixed hematite and magnetite deposit on the southern slopes of the Sierra de Cayey, about four miles north of Arroyo.7"9 Neither of these orebodies has been developed, nor have investigations of the widely distributed deposits of magnetite, which include all the remaining occurrences of iron deserving of economic consideration, proceeded beyond the exploratory stage. With the possible exception of the mixed deposit near Arroyo, the magnetite is directly associated with andesitic and dioritic intrusives, which invade the Cretaceous rock section, and the bulk of it, occurring in calcareous sediments, is clearly of contact-replacement origin.
