A new method for obtaining equilibrium vaporization ratios (K-values) for reservoir fluids has been developed and tested. By application of the method, complex experimental measurements of liquid and vapor phase compositions are eliminated. This simplified technique reduces the cost of experimental equilibrium-ratio data for reservoir studies of condensates and volatile crude-oil systems. The method is designed for systems of constant composition and, therefore, is best suited for depletion studies where compositional changes at high pressures are minor. The basic data required, in addition to the composition of the initial reservoir fluid, are the relative vapor-liquid volumes and densities at reservoir temperature and variom reservoir pressures. Tests demonstrated that the method predicts equilibrium ratios accurately for condensates. A single test on a crude oil was not conclusive; further testing will be necessary before the accuracy of the method can be determined for crude-oil systems. In addition to determining equilibrium ratios, the calculation method provides information on the physical properties of the "plus" component in the vapor and liquid phases. The "plus" component is that mixture of components heavier than the least volatile fraction analyzed. This information is useful in studies of both natural depletion and cycling operations for condensate reservoirs where the heptanes-plus component in the gas phase is produced from the reservoir. INTRODUCTION As more volatile oil and condensate reservoirs are found, the use of phase behavior techniques to predict their performance is increasing in importance. These techniques have long been used for condensate fields and have more recently been applied to crude-oil fields containing oils of medium-to-high volatility. In these phase behavior methods, equilibrium ratios (K-values) are used to predict compositional changes in the reservoir fluids—thereby accounting for the recoverable oil that exists in the gas phase. The reliability of the predictions depends to a large extent on the equilibrium ratios used. These values must be obtained for each component for the entire pressure range being investigated. Unfortunately, because of the complex nature of hydrocarbon mixtures, accurate K-values are hard to obtain. The equilibrium ratios for a particular component will vary not only with the temperature and pressure, but also with over-all composition of the system. The importance of composition is quite critical at elevated pressures, but becomes negligible at pressures below about 300 psia. Therefore, because most phase behavior problems involve the high-pressure region, each fluid system becomes a special case. Experimental programs to determine characteristic K-values are quite difficult and time-consuming. Thus, it is often necessary to resort to approximations of the K-value data. Charts giving K-values for various mixtures and classes of mixtures are available in the literature. However, there are two major difficulties in using them: (1) the K-values of the "plus" component (that mixture of components heavier than the last one analyzed) must be obtained by extrapolation from the K-values of the other components; and (2) the K-values obtained must finally be adjusted by trial and error to agree with observed volumetric data. To eliminate these difficulties, a new method of determining equilibrium ratios was developed. Briefly, after the composition of the system as a whole has been analyzed, the method uses empirical correlations and the gross fluid properties of the system (relative vapor-liquid volumes and densities) to calculate K-values. Because the calculative procedure is long, it is best solved on a digital computer. About one hour of machine time on an IBM 650 computer is required to develop a K-chart for the fluid being examined. DEVELOPMENT OF THE METHOD OF OBTAINING K-VALUES Equilibrium ratios are defined as the ratio of the mole fraction of a component in the vapor phase to its mole fraction in the liquid phase. This statement is expressed in Eq. 1. A typical plot of equilibrium ratios for a particular system is shown in Fig. 1. It should be noted that, at pressures near the saturation pressure, the K-values appear to converge to a common point. In the year 1926, Edie Creek, in the Morobe District of the Mandated Territory of New Guinea, saw the greatest gold rush of recent years. Situated 35 miles inland from the coast, and at an altitude of over 6000 feet, Edie Creek presented to the original prospectors a wet, jungle-clad uninhabited, and inhospitable region. There were no roads; and the only means of approach from the equally inhospitable coast was by an eight to ten days' tramp through coastal swamps and gorge-scarred mountains. All food supplies and equipment had to be carried on the backs of "kanakas," and in many cases through country occupied by hostile natives.Since the first discovery of payable gold at Edie Creek, mining on the Morobe Goldfield has shown remarkable progress, and in spite of the tremendous natural difficulties, the field today ranks as one of the most important in Australasia.Aeroplanes, more than any other factor, have been responsible for this rapid development. COALEX Pry Limited operates two underground steaming coal mines on the western edge of the Sydney Basin near Lithgow, New South Wales. Baal Bone Colliery uses longwall technology for an output of over two million tonne/year while Clarence Colliery currently uses continuous miners and breaker line supports for an output of two million tonnelyear.A computerised geological database and modelling system has been implemented to service these mines routinely, as well as several outlying prospects. The database is constantly upgraded for drillhole information, surveyed spot levels on the surface and underground, quality sampling details, surveyed mine workings and geological mapping. This information is edited on a routine basis, allowing dynamic modelling of key aspects of geology for ongoing operations.

This paper provides a general discussion of atmospheric-pressure plasma generation, processes, and applications. There are two distinct categories of atmospheric-pressure plasmas: thermal and nonthermal. Thermal atmospheric-pressure plasmas include those produced in high intensity arcs, plasma torches, or in high intensity, high frequency discharges. Although nonthermal plasmas are at room temperatures, they are extremely effective in producing activated species, e.g., free radicals and excited state atoms. Thus, both thermal and nonthermal atmospheric-pressure plasmas are finding applications in a wide variety of industrial processes, e.g. waste destruction, material recovery, extractive metallurgy, powder synthesis, and energy conversion. A brief discussion of recent plasma technology research and development activities at the Idaho National Laboratory is included.

In 1997, the Australian coal industry through Standards Australia committee MN-001 Coal and Coke recognised the need to produce a Standard giving some instruction on how to inspect and audit mechanical sampling systems. A Guide was developed by sampling subcommittee MN-001-04 and in 1999 the Standard was released as AS4264.5 æGuide to the Inspection of mechanical sampling systemsÆ Coal and Coke. Since that time the author has assisted with other committees in developing the Guide for other commodities such as concentrates and a generic standard for particulate materials. (AS4433.6 released 2000). The Coal and Coke guide is also currently a work item for ISO Standards. This paper is focused primarily on auditing and inspection procedures for coal mechanical sampling systems. It highlights the need for at least a three level inspection protocol where the operators manning the system maintain operational checks, the operators are regularly supervised by the company managing the system and once per year an independent auditor inspects the whole system to ensure compliance with design and standards. It does not cover short- and long-term maintenance of individual systems. With companies already certified to the ISO9000 series, this guide forms the framework to bring the operation and inspection of their mechanical sampling systems into line with these principles.

"Minntac is a taconite mining, concentrating and pelletizing operation located near the town of Mountain Iron, Minnesota, U.S.A. It is totally owned and operated by USX Corporation and represents its largest source of domestic iron units. Minntac began producing fluxed pellets in 1988 and has produced both acid and fluxed pellets since then. This paper compares the acid and fluxed pellets produced at Minntac. It reviews modifications that have been made to the plant flowsheet and discusses areas recognized for improvement since the beginning of fluxed pellet production. It also comments briefly on the performance of Minntac fluxed pellets in USX blast furnaces and the future of fluxed pellets at Minntac.IntroductionMinntac was built in three steps with each step designed to produce 6 million long tons of acid pellets per year. The actual production has varied though. Figure I shows the production by year at Mirmtac. Step I began production in 1967, Step 2 in 1972 and Step 3 in 1978. Mirmtac produced 16.5 million tons in 1979 but only 3.5 million tons in 1982 when the facility was shut down for six months because of the lack of demand for pellets. Since the initial start up, Mirmtac has produced over 200 million long tons of pellets. Until 1987, all the pellets produced were ""acid"" pellets. In 1987, equipment to produce ""fluxed"" pellets was installed and tested. In 1988, full scale production of fluxed pellets began."

A failure of the Pit IA highwall in July 1989 led Newcrest Mining Ltd's Telfer Gold Mine to commence underground operations approximately 12 months ahead of schedule. The failure presented four major challenges to management: 1. how to maximise the recovery of the Middle Vale Reef (MVR) in the open pit: 2. how to minimise the risk to personnel involved in the extraction of the remaining open pit ore; 3. how to avoid disruption to ore supply: and 4. how to maintain a permanent and safe means of accessing the underground operations from the base of the pit. The risks associated with meeting these challenges were minimised through the installation of a complex network of real time slope monitoring equipment. These monitors were connected to an alarm system which was combined with detailed operational procedures to be carried out in the event of a highwall alarm being triggered. The accuracy with which the risk of failure has been managed was demonstrated recently when the onset of a second failure was initially identified some 13 months prior to its ultimate collapse in October 1992. The location, timing and size of the failure was able to be predicted allowing appropriate precautionary measures to be taken to ensure safety of access to the underground portal and pumping equipment in the base of the pit. This paper reviews the sequence of events leading to both the July 1989 and October 1992 failures of the Pit 1A highwall and the monitoring equipment and procedures used to identify, quantify and manage the risk to personnel operating in the base of the pit.

Theoretical and experimental studies have been made-to clarify the physical and chemical behavior of the tuyere combustion zone of blast furnace. Gas streamlines around this zone were visualized by the use of the two-dimensional equip- ment. Close agreement between the observed stream- lines and the calculated ones is found. The three- dimensional experimental studies have revealed that there exists a so-called dry zone in the neighbor- hood of the raceway and the trickling liquid be- haves approximately like a continuum. A kinetic model is develdped to describe the behavior of coke combustion in the tuyere zone. The model is based on the reaction kinetics, the differential balances of heat and mass, and the mechanics of gas flows. Regarding-the-axial distribution of gas composition in the tuyere zone, good agreement is obtained be- tween the model prediction and the data observed in a working furnace by the other investigators. Cal- culated results-show that the maximum consumption of coke occurs at the intermediate region of the raceway. For the blowing of oxygen-enriched or high -humidity blast, the position at which the maximum consumption of coke occurs is shifted toward the tuyere nose. Similar effect is found when the par- ticle diameter of coke in the tuyere zone is de- creased. "The Line Creek Mine of Crows Nest Resources started mining coal in the fall of 1981. There are seven mineable seams with thicknesses ranging from 1.5 to 13 metres and with dips varying from 0 degrees to 60 degrees. This, together with internal partings and the very friable nature of the coal, creates a number of mining problems.The coal is divided into zones depending on the dip of the seam. Each zone requires a different mining technique to ensure optimum recovery and low dilution while still keeping fines to a minimum.Line Creek employs a combination of hydraulic front shovels and backhoes to mine its coal without blasting or use of dozers. This has been very successful in reducing the proportion of fine coal hauled to the plant, thus improving quality control and reducing costs in coal processing.There have been a number of other benefits from the use of excavators instead of more conventional methods. These include better selectivity, good cleanup, reduction in traffic at the face and lower cost.IntroductionThe Line Creek Mine is situated approximately 25 km north of Sparwood in southeastern British Columbia (Fig. I). Preproduction stripping began in J98J with the first coal shipments made in 1982. In 1983 the mine produced 2.1 million tonnes of raw coal.Similar to other East Kootenay coals, the seams at Line Creek are characterized by their friability, producing a large proportion of fine coal during mining. In an attempt to reduce these fines Crows Nest Resources has instituted the use of hydraulic excavators to mine and load the coal.Hydraulic excavators offer other substantial advantages over front-end loaders and dozers, which has been the conventional system in other mines in the area."

The objective of this paper was to determine if recent advances in numerical electromagnetic wave propagation modelling techniques could be used to study the propagation of GPS signals over arbitrary terrain. Specifically the effects of diffraction and multipath were to be modelled accurately for propagation over arbitrary terrain surfaces defined by a digital terrain model. Ideally the model was to be in three dimensions and cover an area of a few square kilometres with a simulation height of a few hundred metres. Simulations were to run on current technology PC's with run times less than a few hours. A relatively new technique that involves a numerical solution to the Parabolic Equations can be used to solve for two-dimensional propagation over any type of terrain. The PE provides a direct solution of Maxwell's wave equations by approximating the Helmholtz scalar wave equation. This technique does not rely on the study of individual ray paths as used in the Geometrical Theory of Diffraction (GTD). It was decided to develop a two dimensional Parabolic Equation code, using the Fourier Split/Step method that allowed propagation over arbitrary terrain (; ; ). The model boundary conditions assumed that the satellite transmission was a plane wave, and that the lower boundary was a perfect reflector. Propagation simulations from the model accurately provide the amplitude and phase of the propagated plane wave at all points within the model domain. The PE model was used to study the effects of diffraction and multipath caused by various types of terrain commonly found in an open cut mining environment. The study of diffraction errors was relatively simple, because we are simply concerned with amplitude of the signal as it diffracts about an obstacle. If the amplitude is above the level receivable by a GPS receiver then the diffraction error can be obtained from the geometry of the terrain obstacle. The study of multipath is more complex, as the computed phase from the PE model is ambiguous and the presence of multipath can only be inferred. Thus the absolute magnitude of the nmltipath error is not currently determinable, though the results of some new work is shown here. This paper shows that diffraction effects can cause significant errors in range. It also shows the effects that multipath has on the received amplitude of the signal and the received phase of the signal. A discussion is made of further work that is presently underway that will allow the direct determination of the multipath error by comparing the ambiguous phase with a reference phase.

Martensitic transformations have been found in AgCd both upon cold-working at room temperature and cooling to lower temperatures. The crystal structures of the transformation products were found to be close-packed hexagonal in the first case and or-thorhombic in the latter. The transformation characteristics also were studied. Similar treatment of AuZn alloys failed to yield any transformation. THE literature on martensitic transformations of body-centered cubic metals and alloys indicates widespread instability of this structure at low temperatures, a tendency which merits further study. The body-centered cubic ß-phase of CuZn, for example, when it contained less than 42 wt pct Zn, was found by Greninger and Mooradian' and others' to transform on cooling to subzero temperatures to a phase that was tentatively considered to be tetragonal. Further work by Massalski and Barrett" demonstrated that cold work at low temperatures causes a partial transformation of ß CuZn of higher Zn content. The structures of the strain-induced transformation products were found to be different from those induced by simple cooling. Another well-known martensitic transformation among body-centered cubic phases is that of ß AuCd, first studied with X-rays by Olander,' then very thoroughly by Chang and Read.5,6 Here again transformation was found to occur both as a result of cooling and of strain. The alkali metals Li and Na, as well as certain Li-Mg alloys, also undergo transformation from their normal body-centered cubic structure, both on cooling and on cold-working. The phase AgCd, the subject of the present report, should be expected to behave quite similarly to CuZn for a number of reasons. It is the chemical analogue of CuZn, silver being directly below copper and cadmium directly below zinc in the periodic table. The size factors (percent difference in size) of the atoms, possibly a consideration in the stability of the ß-phases, are +3.1 in AgCd and + 4.2 in CuZn. Likewise the relative electronegativities of the two pairs of metals are about the same, CuZn possessing an electronegativity difference of 1.0 and AgCd one of 0.8. These values are from a table of electronegativities given by Darken and Gurry." The phase diagrams of the two systems around 50 atomic percent are similar, both possessing a disordered body-centered cubic phase, ß, at high temperatures and an ordered bcc phase, ß, at room temperature; however, the ß and ß' phases of AgCd are separated by a hexagonal phase, [, stable in the range 220-440oC, which has no analogue in CuZn. There has been confusion in the literature as to the structures of the ß' and [-phases. The phase diagram in the ASM handbook'" has the structures of the two phases interchanged; however, Hansen" reports the correct relative positions and Muldawer" verified that ß', the low-temperature phase, is body-centered cubic. The Bureau of Mines undertook the development and evaluation of a system to provide a simultaneous, on-line determination of both iron and silica in iron ore beneficiation streams as part of a program to improve the efficiency to mineral separation processes, Californium-252 (252-Cf) was the neutron source used in the system for measuring the amounts of silica and iron in bulk slurries by thermal neutron capture-gamma ray spectra analysis. The theory of thermal neutron capture-gamma ray reactions and their potential application to mineral processing stream analysis is discussed. The prototype system and supporting software developed by the Bureau is described. During the initial phase of the work, both simulated and actual pilot plant slurries were investigated using a 60-to 32-µg 252-Cf neutron source. The percent solids of the slurries was ranged from 2 to 40 percent and the silica and iron content ranged from 1.5 to 83 percent and from 10 to 65 percent, respectively. Accuracy of the determination of the components in the solids was dependent upon the percent solids in the slurry.

The Queensland Department of Natural Resources and Mines (NR&M) accepted the environmental liability for the Mount Morgan minesite in 1991. This gold and copper mine located 38 km southwest of Rockhampton had been in operation for more than 100 years. Mining leases are still active while the feasibility of a reprocessing operation is carried out. From 1993, NR&M have operated a seepage interception pumpback system which has reduced the chronic load of acid rock drainage (ARD) to the adjacent Dee River, a tributary of the Fitzroy River system. In early-2000, it was recognised that a ten-year plan for rehabilitation of the mine, along with significant funding would be required if a long-term sustainable rehabilitation strategy was to be implemented at this minesite, ultimately making the seepage interception system redundant. A rehabilitation planning workshop coordinated by NR&M was held in May 2000. This workshop brought to the mine a range of technical expertise and key stakeholder groups. This workshop provided a technical forum for review of studies undertaken and to identify priority projects, which needed to be undertaken in the future to more clearly define contaminant sources on the mine site and to prioritise the rehabilitation program. Stakeholder consultation enabled the project team to be clear on community and other government (eg Environmental Protection Agency) expectations. It is clear that the future of the economically depressed community of Mount Morgan will be reliant on the careful management of the significant heritage values at the minesite for tourism, education and research. In the first year (2000), priority studies were initiated, which included whole of site studies on water balance, contaminant sources and a review of occupational health and safety and environment of the minesite and conservation and heritage scoping. Baseline vegetation and soil materials surveys were also initiated. The outcomes of these studies helped to shape the work program for the following year, while providing a basis for an additional funding application, which was granted. The second year of studies focused on building upon the existing baseline studies completed. In addition, studies focussed on addressing the priority issue of contingency planning for overflow from the open cut pit in accordance with best practice management of release water and river monitoring strategies were completed. Completion of these projects over the next six months will enable the optimal rehabilitation strategy to be defined in 2003. This optimal strategy may require the use of a water treatment plant for part of the ten-year program to provide space in the open cut pit for the deposition of ARD contaminant sources (eg waste dumps, tailings). It is envisaged that some sources will be rehabilitated insitu while others will be relocated to the open cut pit. Implementation of this strategy will be dependent on subsequent funding.

Although forty-seven years have passed since the by-product coke oven made its successful commercial appearance, it is only during the past fifteen or twenty years that this system of coal carbonisation has advanced rapidly to its present position ofabsolute supremacy.Early designs of by-product ovens proved more or less faulty, and the coke produced was so inferior to coke made in beehive ovens that there was a natural hesitancy on the part of coke producers to invest large sums of money in installations of by-productovens of doubtful utility-more especially in view of the fact that beehive ovens could be erected cheaply and operated by non technical labour for the production of high-grade coke under the most variable conditions of trade.Surely and steadily designers brought forward by-product ovens of improved type, coupled with more efficient apparatus for the recovery of by-products, but still the industry lagged, due almost entirely to the insistence on the part of coke users that the qualityof ordinary beehive coke was vastly superior for metallurgical operations to the best coke produced from by-product ovens. So deep rooted was this prejudice that only the passage of time could eradicate it. That it has successfully done so is strikingly illustratedin the following statistics:

DEVELOPMENT of the lime industry- in Ste. Genevieve County began in a crude way in 1840. According to information furnished by the Missouri Bureau of Geology, in the early days small vertical kilns built of stone were used, and wood was the fuel. Modern development began in 1904 when one company introduced steel shells lined with firebrick. Within a few years two more companies erected similar plants, and in 1925 a fourth company began operations. Thus there are today four lime companies at Ste. Genevieve, all operating at high capacity and with a gradually increasing production. GEOLOGY The limestone of Ste. Genevieve County, which has the chemical composition and purity required for lime burning, is the upper 80 or 90 ft. of Spergen formation. The Missouri Bureau of Geology, in its geological map of Ste. Genevieve County, gives the Spergen formation a total thickness of 160 ft., but only the upper portion is pure enough for lime burning, with an average raw-stone analysis of 98.7 per cent CaC03; 0.35 Si02; 0.3 R203; 0.35 MgCO3; 0.3 S03. The Spergen, one member of the Meramac group, Iowa series, of the Mississippian system, underlies an area approximately 12 miles long north and south, by 5 miles wide east and west (Fig. 1) in Ste. Genevieve County. The entire eastern two-thirds of Ste. Genevieve County is sedimentary, the formations dipping gently toward the east on an average grade of about 4 per cent, or 2 ½ º. Thus the outcrops of the various sedimentaries run approximately north and south. A line running west from Ste. Genevieve crosses the outcrops of the sedimentaries, ranging from the top of the Mississippian to the Ozarkian geological system in a space of 12 miles. Thus with the gentle dip of 2 ½ º the 160-ft. thickness of the Spergen formation stretches out in its outcrop so that it is approximately one mile

IT has been known for several years that in certain age-hardenable alloys precipitation of finely divided particles occurs simultaneously with the changes in physical properties; while, in other alloys, these changes take place prior to, or without any, precipitation. . The silver-copper alloys are generally considered to be the classical example of the first group, and the aluminum-copper alloys (duralumin) are typical of the second group. The two types of aging are explained by the precipitation theory and the knot theory respectively. ? It is well recognized now that these theories do not conflict with each other; the one used for a given aging system depends upon which way the alloy in question happens to age-harden. However, previous work on the aluminum-copper alloys1,2 has shown that if the aging temperature is raised sufficiently the hardening will be accompanied by actual precipitation. In fact, it is quite probable that all of the so-called knot-hardening alloys will harden by precipitation at elevated temperatures. Therefore, a combination of the knot and precip-itation theories is necessary to give a complete picture of the age-harden-ing of these alloys, and indicates that knot formation and precipitation are not independent processes. To test the generality of this concept, it is necessary to show that the alloys that commonly harden by precipitation will harden prior to precip¬itation if the aging temperature is sufficiently lowered. For this reason, it would be well to carefully re-examine the aging characteristics of the silver-copper alloys at aging temperatures somewhat below those used by previous investigators. If hardening can be detected prior to precipi¬tation in these alloys, it will lend great weight to the idea that knot forma-

SINCE the discussion on steel rails in America has forcibly drawn attention to the value of chemical analysis, if not as a necessary stipulation, at least as a guide to control the usual mechanical tests, some doubt has been thrown upon the accuracy of the analytical results obtained by different chemists. To any one having the least acquaintance with chemistry, it is quite clear that if exactly similar results are to be obtained from the same borings of steel, exactly the same methods must be used by the different analysts. Hence the necessity (if complications are to be avoided) of establishing what I may call standard or normal methods, to be used both by the inspectors and by the chemists at the works. Remembering that the application of chemistry to steelrail inspection is yet in its infancy, it is of great importance to possess a perfect acquaintance with the best methods in use. Being myself a grateful pupil of Professor Eggertz, of the School of Mines in Sweden, it occurred to me, two years ago, that I could not do better than start a laboratory of my own, and engage one of his pupils, Mr. Troilius, for the purpose of analyzing the steel borings from mechanically-tested rails, so that I might thus obtain without delay thoroughly accurate determinations. Moreover, in order to carry on the operations in perfect accordance with the methods used at the steel works in England and Germany, where I had to control the manufacture, I deemed it desirable to allow Mr. Troilius to go through a course of training at these works; and I gladly seize this opportunity of expressing my grateful acknowledgments to several works in England and in Germany for affording every facility for such an exchange of information as mas found necessary in arriving at the best analytical methods to be used.

BOTH the foundryman and the theoretical metallurgist are now generally agreed that the anomalous "rising" or "bleeding" of certain ferrous castings of killed metal is primarily attributable to hydrogen. How and why the phenomenon occurs, however, have not been made clear. The following discussion is intended to harmonize foundry experience with metallurgical theory so that the foundryman may possibly improve his ability to prognosticate whether a certain casting may bleed or not. BLEEDING, RISING, AND PIPING The "rising" to be discussed here is not to be confused with the action in rimming ingots as a result of the carbon-oxygen reaction, although a conclusion will be drawn that may apply to the art of controlling the rimming action. Only killed metal is considered, which includes both steels and irons. In Fig. I, three killed, chill-cast ingots are shown: a porous ingot whose evolution of gas during late stages of solidification has ejected metal through the top; an ingot in which moderate gas evolution during solidification has lifted the mushy central metal, i.e., it has "risen"; and, third, a sound ingot with good piping characteristics. The first type is referred to as "bleeding," and generally infers that a solid skin had first formed through which the liquid metal later erupted. There is no fundamental distinction between bleeding and rising in reference to killed metal.* POROSITY Hydrogen appears as a cause of bleeding because the gas evolution simultaneously leaves a porosity of a type traceable to hydrogen. Twenty years ago, Melmoth1 noted that killed steel that rose unexpectedly in the mold, if returned while liquid to the furnace and heated further under a reducing lime slag, would again rise in the mold; but that if the ingot were allowed to solidify and was then remelted no rising occurred. A critical quantity of the responsible gas is therefore removed by the rising action. Melmoth associated rising with high silicon (0.7 to 0.9 per cent) and concluded that silicon increased gas absorption. Because silicon is a strong deoxidizer, oxygen must, therefore, be eliminated from consideration of the three common gases in steel-oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen. Butterworth2 later decided that pinhole porosity was caused by gases dissolved in the metal and that hydrogen was obtained from steam in the mold. downdraft traveling grate process to agglomerate pelletized iron ore concentrates has been successfully demonstrated in a pilot plant at Carrollville, Wis. Work there followed several years of development in the Allis-Chalmers Mfg. Co. laboratories, and the pilot plant phase was carried out in cooperation with Arthur G. McKee & Co., consultants and engineers to the iron and steel industry. End result of the process is conversion of iron ore concentrates into a form which can easily be transported and smelted in the blast furnace. Process Description The first of two process steps incorporates the art of balling and prepares the concentrates for burning. The second step consists of burning the green balls on the grate machine to the hardness required for shipping and handling purposes and for reduction in blast furnaces, see Fig. 1. Facilities are provided at the pilot plant to receive carload quantities of concentrate. The concentrates are loaded into a 50-ton bin direct from railroad cars. Because of the variable moisture content of the concentrates after shipment in an open railroad car it is necessary to repulp and refilter the concentrates to maintain a uniform and proper moisture content for the balling operation. Concentrates are conveyed to slurry tanks, and the slurry, at 50 to 60 pct solids, is pumped to a 4x4-ft drum filter. The filter provides feed of uniform moisture to the plant. Magnetite concentrates are normally filtered to produce a cake containing about 10 pct moisture, a necessary requirement for the following balling operation. The filtered concentrate is conveyed to a rotary bin table feeder which acts as a surge bin for the filter cake and delivers a steady flow of concentrates to the balling drum. It is often desirable to make additions to the concentrates as they are fed to the balling drum. These additives, such as bentonite, increase the strength of the finished green pellet and improve ballability of the concentrate. A vibrating feeder supplies additive to the feed belt, and the additive is mixed with the concentrate in the balling drum. The balling drum, shown in Fig. 3, is 8x3-ft diam. An oscillating cutting bar maintains the lining in the drum by trimming off the buildup of excess concentrate as it forms. The drum is operated in closed circuit with a lx4-ft rod-deck vibrating screen. Undersize pellets or seed pellets from the screen are returned to the balling drum until they grow to the desired size. Size of pellets is controlled by the opening in the screen deck. The formation of pellets in the balling drum is affected by many variables. Some of these are: the size distribution of the feed, the particle shape of the concentrate, the feed rate to the drum, the moisture in the concentrate, the speed of rotation of the drum, the slope of the drum, and the type of trimming obtained with the cutting bar. In this process, attempts are made to control the pellet size within the limits of % to 5/8 in. diam. The screened oversize pellets are conveyed under a coal feeder where sufficient powdered coal is added to the belt to produce desired results in the burning process. The top size of the coal successfully used has been 20 mesh, and anthracite was used in the test program. Fig. 4 illustrates the vibrating screen and the coal feeder. The pellets and free coal are conveyed together to the 5x3-ft diam- reroll drum that rolls the coal onto the surface of the pellets. This drum is also equipped with a cutting bar. The prepared pellets, containing bentonite, water, and surface coal, are elevated to the traveling grate, which consists of a continuous strand of 37 pallets. Each pallet, with a grate bar area 2 ft wide by 1 1/2 ft long, has 14-in. high side plates, Fig. 5. Feeding and distribution of the green balls to the grate is handled by a short conveyor which oscillates back and forth across the 2-ft width of the grate. An adjustable vertical plate located several inches in front of the head pulley of the oscillating conveyor controls the height of the bed and levels the moving bed of pellets. This method of feeding prevents segregation of various size pellets as well as fines and produces a uniform, permeable bed. The pallet train moves under the furnace and across four windboxes, located beneath the pallet frames, see Fig. 2. As the green pellets are deposited on the grate, partial drying of the pellets begins over a 2-ft long updraft windbox. The low temperature air reduces the moisture in the pellets in the lower level of the bed and this operation is essential to prevent sagging of the bed during later stages of the Process. The air used for this drying is recuperated from cooling the pellets on the grate, and supplemental heat, required for starting the Process, is obtained from an auxiliary burner. The pellets are then moved by the grate into the furnace and over an 8-ft windbox, designated as the downdraft waste windbox. Products of combustion are exhausted from this windbox to atmosphere. The furnace, shown in Fig. 6, is constructed with three chambers to provide downdraft drying, preheating, and ignition, respectively, to the pellet bed as it passes through. Overall length of the furnace is 5.57 ft; however, the exterior wall ends may be moved to reduce the length and also adjusted to Obtain the bed height desired, The drying, preheating, and ignition sections of the furnace are supplied with medium temperature
