ESSO PRODUCTION RESEARCH CO., HOUSTON, TEX. A mathematical model that represents the conduction heating of a rock formation of limited permeability is formulated. Heat is introduced by the injection of a hot condensing gas into horizontal fractures through the formation. The fractures are assumed to be equally spaced; the flow of fluid is linear. The model consists of three coupled partial differential equations and two functional relationships. Temperature histories for both fractures and formation are obtained by numerical procedures. Application of the model in predicting in situ heating of oil shale is illustrated with four sample cases. Influences of shale thermal diffusivity, fluid pressure in the fracture and fracture spacing upon heating rate are demonstrated. In all cases considered, several years were required to heat all the formation to 700F with 1,000F steam. Less than 32 per cent of the injected heat was utilized for heating the shale. To facilitate extensive calculations of this type, a set of seven dimension-less quantities are derived. With this dimensionless system, the effect of controllable parameters on economics can be explored. INTRODUCTION Vast deposits of hydrocarbons are contained in oil shale formations in the western United States and in other countries. These hydrocarbons, known as kerogen, are difficult to recover because they are immobile solids and because the rock formations in which they are found have very limited permeability. The kerogen can be converted through pyrolysis to recoverable liquids and gases if the formation temperature is elevated to the range 600 to 800F. To accomplish this heating, the formation might be artificially fractured and a hot fluid injected into the fractures. If the injection and production wells are vertical and the fractures horizontal, interwell communication will be established and the hot fluid will flow from an injection well to a production well. In this process, some of the heat in the fluid will be given up and conducted into the formation. Products of pyrolysis will flow from the heated rock matrix into the fractures and be produced, commingled with the injected fluid. The practicality of such a process is strongly influenced by the rate at which heat can be transferred from the hot fluids to the formation. An analysis of this heat conduction problem is the subject of this paper. Linear flow of a condensing gas through a set of horizontal, equally spaced fractures is considered. Temperature histories for both fractures and formation are obtained from numerical procedures. The analysis also applies to formations containing streaks of natural permeability instead of fractures. Heat flow problems similar to the one treated here have been studied by other workers. Thomas1 has solved a radial problem in which he considers the injection of a noncondensing gas into a single, horizontal fracture and approximates the temperature profile in the fracture by a step function. The solutions to other problems, which are less similar to the present problem than the one treated by Thomas, have been reviewed by Spillette.2 In addition to these mathematical studies, a field test of an in situ shale oil recovery process using hot natural gas as the injected fluid has been reported.3 The first part of this paper is concerned with the mathematical development of the problem. The differential equations, boundary conditions and functional relationships which describe the physical model are formulated and the equations are cast into finite difference form. The method of solution of the difference equations is discussed (Appendix B). The second part of this paper presents results computed for a typical oil shale formation for which steam at 1,000F is the injected fluid. The objective of extensive underground experimentation on three longwall coal faces was to improve the stability of mechanised longwall faces through investigation of the relations between support resistance and convergence and resultant deformation of roof and face strata. In particular the influence of high setting and yield pressures on several strata and support parameters was studied in great depth. Increased setting pressures resulting in an increase in setting load densities from 0.15 MN/m2 to O.45 MN/m2 were shown to reduce convergence, face spalling roof flaking, lateral movement of roof and floor, extrusion of the face wall and progressive failure of the coal wall ahead of the face. This was shown to result mainly from the change in roof strata deformation from a wedge shaped compression zone with tension at the face edge to an even beam shaped compression zone over the face area. Debris thickness above the support canopy and below the base was observed to be the one of the most variable parameters which influenced the support characteristics particularly the rate of load acceptance by supports and the roof to floor convergence. A setting load density of 0.4 MN/m2 to 0.5 MN/m2 was found to be optimum under soft to moderately strong sandstone roofs. The authors demonstrated that use of guaranteed set valves with powered supports contribute to good strata control, reduce face down-time and increase face productivity.

INTERGRANULAR corrosion in corrosion-resistant chromium-nickel steels has been widely discussed in the last few years. So far as the author knows, nothing has been published which definitely shows that this tendency can be eliminated, although suggestions have been made that a remedy is possible if certain specifications are satisfied. Strauss, Schottky and Hinueber1 suggested an increase in chromium content to an extent that would prevent the impoverishment of chromium on carbide precipitation sufficient to cause impaired corrosion resistance in the matrix. Pilling2 suggested an increase in nickel, so that the stability of the austenite matrix would be increased. Aborn and Bain,3 say that "intergranular attack-may be eliminated by preventing carbide precipitation (e. g., by lowering the carbon content or somehow raising its solubility) or by precipitating it permanently under conditions which will not remove chromium from solid solution so drastically at any points." In a later paper Aborn and Bain4 state that many different metallic elements, tungsten, vanadium, copper, aluminum, molybdenum, titanium and zirconium, have been added in small per-centages to increase the stability of these alloys, but that it has been reported that according to the copper sulfate test these added elements act only to retard the intergranular corrosion, and that increased nickel and chromium contents have similar effects. Newell5 showed that the lower the quenching temperature before reheating, the less severe was the intergranular attack.

"A computer-based drill core logging system used to examine computer-based drill core logging system used to examine copper mineralization hosted in volcaniclastic rocks at the Sustut deposit, in north-central British Columbia, has many advantages over conventional logging. A relatively simple format for recording geological information allows complex, but significant, geologic parameters to be recorded consistently, accurately and quickly. This allows graphical presentations and statistical interpretation of the data that lead to rapid and detailed analyses of the control and distribution of copper mineralization at the Sustut deposit.Ore mineralization is concentrated in lens-shaped bodies and is zoned from native copper cores through chalcocite, bornite and chalcopyrite to a margin containing pyrite. Chalcocite, the principal mineral, occurs mainly in volcaniclastic agglomerate characterized by a specific grain size, a narrow range of matrix and fragment proportions, and a specific sorting.IntroductionWe report here a case history of the practical application of a detailed computer-based drill core logging system applied to the Sustut copper deposit of Falconbridge Nickel Mines Ltd. The Sustut deposit, containing a few tens of millions of tons of ore grading slightly more than one per cent copper (Church, 1975), is in north-central British Columbia about 875 km north of Vancouver. The deposit is contained in volcaniclastic sedimentary rocks of the Upper Triassic Moosevale Formation, which is within the upper part of the Takla Group (Monger and Church, 1977) of basic volcanic and associated sedimentary rocks. Takla rocks occur along the eastern fringe of the Intermontane Belt in the Canadian Cordillera (Sutherland Brown et al., 1971). The deposit consists of concentrations of copper sulphides, native copper and pyrite within pods and lenses parallel to bedding in the host sedimentary rocks. These sheet-like deposits exhibit a mineral zoning from pyrite at the fringes successively through chalcopyrite, bornite and chalcocite to native copper at the core (Wilton, 1978; Wilton and Sinclair, 1979)."

An orientation survey was conducted over a known disseminated copper deposit and a Au-Cu vein deposit and employed geological, geophysical, and geochemical methods. Geochemical techniques proved the most effective and economical means of locating and defining areas underlain by these types of mineralization. Six additional, widely separated occurrences were also investigated and mineralization was confirmed by determination of cold-extractable copper in stream sediments. The length of anomalous drainage varies from several to 16 km and depends on the type and tenor of mineralization. Despite generally marked relief and extreme physical and chemical weathering, cold-extractable copper anomalies in soils appear to reflect closely variations in the ore mineral content of immediately underlying rocks. Threshold values vary with local geological conditions and type and grade of mineralization. Significant thresholds in stream sediments are about 65 ppm and 10 ppm for cold-extractable copper in disseminated and vein copper occurrences respectively. Similar differences are encountered in soils. This necessitates the use of a scale of threshold values at progressive stages in each exploration program. Dis-seminated copper occurrences are presently the major source of mineral production m the Philippines. Much potentially productive ground remains to be investigated and applied geochemistry appears to offer the best available approach. The Institute of Applied Geology (I.A.G.), a joint project sponsored by the University of the Philippines, the Philippine Bureau of Mines and the United Nations Development Program (Special Fund) undertook during 1965-66 a number of field projects in Northern Luzon Island (Fig. 1). These field operations were of a two-fold nature and involved both orientation and exploration. During approximately six weeks, an orientation survey, involving geological mapping, geophysical surveying and geochemical prospecting, was conducted over a partly developed, disseminated copper deposit at Santo Nino (Fig. 1). This study demonstrated the economic and technical feasibility of geochemical ptospecting, relative to the other methods tested, for the location and delineation of a typical disseminated copper occurrence characteristic of those that represent the major source of metal in the Philippines.' Geochemical techniques, similar to those tested at Santo Nino, were then applied in a second orientation study of a vein occurrence at Suyoc (Fig. 1). The results of these two orientation studies suggest that, in reconnaissance work in this region, stream sediment analyses, combined with the determination of pH in the same streams, can be used to indicate areas underlain by rock containing anomalous concentrations of copper, whether it occurs in the large tonnage, low grade, disseminated deposits or in the comparatively small tonnage, higher grade, gold vein occurrences. Furthermore, the orientation surveys demonstrate that soil sampling and analysis serve effectively to outline more closely the mineralized zones within the generally anomalous areas identified from the stream reconnaissance. "An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Ertsberg mining district is a 100 km2 area in the highlands of Papua, Indonesia. The district hosts mineralised and barren, outcropping and hidden porphyry and equigranular intrusions. There are at least six major (100+ m wide) porphyry intrusions identified from surface and underground mapping and drill cores. These are the Grasberg Igneous Complex (GIC), Karume porphyry, Lembah Tembaga porphyry, Ertsberg Stockwork Zone porphyry, Kay intrusion and the Wanagon intrusion. Recent deep drilling adjacent to the GIC identified a new hidden porphyry at depth, the Gajah Tidur (Sleeping Elephant), which extends south-west beneath the Kucing Liar skarn. Other named small porphyry dykes and plugs in the district include the West Grasberg, North Grasberg, Idenberg, South East and Zaagkam intrusions. The largest equigranular intrusion is the multiphase Ertsberg diorite.Igneous activities occurred in a relatively short span (<1 million years) from about 3.4 Ma to 2.7 Ma ago, based on U-Pb zircon dating. The various intrusions in the district related to ore mineralisation are high K and appear to have been derived from the same parental chamber, based on similar whole rock rare earth element patterns. Radiogenic Nd- and Sr-isotopic variations indicate that there were multiple recharge events into the parental chamber.The larger intrusions and all economic mineralisation occur in a 4 km wide zone that parallels the N60W-trending axis of the Yellow Valley Syncline (YVS), one of the large folds generated during collisional tectonism. Intrusion pathways at ~3 Ma were localised into dilatational areas in a late and/or post-collisional NW-trending, left-lateral strike-slip zone with Riedel shear offsets between the major fault zones. The concept of fractional wet wattability is examined. Fractional water wettability of a reservoir rock is defined as the fraction of the internal surface urea that is in contact with water. Capillary pressure and relalive permeability of unconsolidated sand are shown to be functions of fractional wettability. INTRODUCTION The petroleum industry has long recognized that wettability of reservoir rock has an important effect on multiphase flow of oil, water and gas through reservoirs. As early as 1928 the American Petroleum Institute sponsored a study of wettability as part of API Project 27 at the U. of Michigan.' Despite 30 years of research, there is still little exact knowledge of the wettability of reservoir rocks. There are two parts to the wettability problem. After agreeing to a uniform nomenclature in regard to wettability,' the first question to be answered is, "What is the in situ wettability of a given reservoir rock?" If this can he answered the next question is, "What part does wettability play in determining the characteristics of multiphase fluid flow through the rock?" This paper represents an oblique attack on the problem of wettability. No attempt is made here to answer the basic question of wettability in situ. instead the consequences of the concept of fractional wettability are examined. Multiphase flow in sandpacks is shown to he highly influenced by fractional wettability. Jennings' has given 3 definition of wettability and the other terms used in discussing wettability. These terms must be applied to the physical situation existing In reservoir rock. A survey of the pertinent literature from 1928 to 1956 indicates that the concept of a contact angle was applied to reservoir rock in the same way it would be applied to a flat, homogeneous surface. Attempts were made to state quantitatively the wettability of a reservoir rock in terms of a contact angle which was presumably constant at all points on the very rough and heterogeneous interior surface of a porous rock. Calhoun, et al,3-6 prepared synthetic consolidated and un-consolidated porous media in which they claimed there was a known uniform contact angle. They then showed the effects on the capillary pressure and relative permeability characteristics of varying this angle. The API Project 47 at the U. of Texas' and others' have made extensive studies of an indirect approach to the contact angle through the use of heat of wetting data. Even if successful. however, this approach also states the wettability of porous rock in terms of a contact angle which is uniform over the entirc surface. If the angle varies from one part to another on the internal surface, there is no way of determining from the measurements the area distribution of contact angles. In 1956 Brown and Fatt5 suggested that the concept of a contact angle, as applied to reservoir rock, be abandoned. This suggestion was made because it is known that the internal surface of most reservoir rocks is composed of many different minerals, cach with a different surface chemistry and a different capacity to adsorh surface active materials from reservoir fluids. Furthermore, the operation of a contact angle in determining the form of a fluid-fluid interface is difficult to picture in the very complex geometry of a pore. Brown and Fatt proposed that the wettability of reservoir rock be stated in terms of the fractional internal surface area that is in contact with water or oil. All surfaces on which there is water are called water-wet; surfaces on which there is oil are called oil-wet. The fractional water wettability is then stated as a number which represents the fraction of the internal surface that is in contact with water. A symmetrical statement can be made for the fractional oil wettability. The concept of a fractional wettability as previously stated has in its favor the recognition of the heterogeneous mineral composition of most reservoir rocks. Another point in its favor is that fractional wettability can be measured quantitatively with relative ease. Hol-brook and Bernard10 se a simple dye adsorption test to obtain fractional wettability of reservoir rocks. Amott11 uses a combination of imbibition and displacement to arrive at a wettability index of reservoir rocks which seems related to fractional wettability in the range 0.25 to 0.75 fractional water wettability. Jennings" has shown the changes in relative permeability that take place when a porous material is changed from unity to zero fractional water wettability. The practical study of corrosion requires consideration of its economic aspects. It must be based on sound scientific principles, but it should be borne in mind that probably the most important object of a corrosion test is to determine what metal in corrosion-resisting construction will produce the greatest operating profit. Thus the corrosion test must be directly connected with money values or it is not a practical corrosion test. This, perhaps unusual, connection between corrosion and economics is partially due to the fact that corrosion deals only with the time factor or duration of equipment, and it is almost the only test which deals with this feature. In these statements a departure is made from the academic definition of the word corrosion and it is done deliberately. The use of the term corrosion is unusual. It is as though we spoke of a tensile test as a "breaking" test. We are not interested primarily in the break but in the strength of the metal. There is no English word which expresses our main interest in corrosion-testing, but let us have clearly in mind that we make corrosion tests to prevent corrosion. Our real interest is in this corrosion-prevention, not in the corrosion. Previous to 1922, it was common comment that "it is impossible to determine the course of corrosion by laboratory testing.'' This statement was true at that time in that the technique of laboratory testing for corrosion resistance was so vague that tests in the laboratory gave untrue results almost as often as true ones. This was so, even in the simple case of determining which one of two metals better resists a given solution. While this is no longer true the number of misleading "corrosion tests" still being ground out by laboratories is too large in the light of our present knowledge. There are two important features of corrosion testing whose neglect is a large contributing factor to misleading results: (1) The economic relations of the corrosion tests to other tests; (2) testing technique. YouR committee's secretary submits the following report, or summary, to the members of the committee, in an endeavor to lay before them a general review of the information so far received and also his own knowledge of the work as carried on at a number of plants, this being done in part to secure further information and suggestions from members and lead to a more effective means of furthering the work of the committee. It is suggested that more detailed data be compiled regarding engineering features involved, and that papers be contributed which will deal with the safeguarding of underground electrical installations. There are few operating companies which have not started a more or less systematic campaign to safeguard their employees from accidental injuries and unhealthful surroundings, but a great deal is to be gained by experience. All may welcome the advice and cooperation of those who have been actively engaged in the work and have demonstrated the results obtainable by organized effort, and it is, therefore, exceedingly gratifying to note the ready assistance and hearty cooperation rendered by the companies that may be truly termed pioneers in the movement. No solution of the safety problem is to be found in a skrict standardization of methods, rules or devices, as the various mining, milling and metallurgical practices present too many conditions differing broadly in general principles, but some standard system embodying principles already proven to be efficient should be created, which may be modified or elaborated to meet specific requirements of each individual company, or to fit working conditions as they exist in the various mining camps throughout the country. An industrial plant is primarily a business undertaking, therefore the economic side of a safety or welfare campaign is of importance. Many small operators have been deterred from undertaking the work by their belief that it involved an expense beyond their means, and one that could not be counterbalanced by greater efficiency or saving along other lines. This idea is generally due to a lack of knowledge of the actual costs of such work, and of the results secured by judicious selection of a method commensurate with the size and nature of the opera-

"The Ontario Division of Inca Metals Company, a Unit of Inca Limited, operates eleven mines, four mills, three refineries, one smelter and one iron ore recovery plant. All but one mine, mill and refinery are located within a fifty kilometer radius of Sudbury, Ontario. A mine-mill complex is located some 100 kilometers west of Thunder Bay on the shore of Lake Shebandowan and a nickel refinery at Port Colborne.During the past 10 years the use of recycled water in our milling operations has increased to more than 95% at each mill. This high degree of water reuse has reduced the (a) need for fresh water and (b) the contaminant level of the downstream aquatic environment. The aggregating of effluents in a common receptor provides a process water having a consistent quality thereby minimizing upsets in mill metallurgy while concurrently improving the operating economies and the downstream aquatic environment."

In the early days, most smelters were erected in nonarable land and at some distance from settled communities. The movement of population, which resulted in many instances from employment at the smelters, has brought to most smelterman in the United States the problem of preventing damage to plant and animal life in the territory adjacent to the smelters by sulphur dioxide gas (S02). This problem has been met, broadly, in two ways: (1) By diluting and removing the S02 by means of air currents and (2) by converting the S02 to a liquid or solid compound of sulphur and disposing of the compound.

The hot-working of iron and steel is an art dating back to antiquity, but until about 25 years ago, relatively few alloying elements were used, and these were present only in small percentages. With the exception of sulphur, the amounts of other elements in steels did not markedly affect their hot-workability. The references in the literature on the effect of other elements on the hot-workability of steel are usually reports of failure of these steels in forging or rolling.1-8 With the increased use of alloying elements, and their use in larger amounts, it was observed that many of the new steels were red short in certain critical ranges or at all hot-working temperatures. The stainless steels are particularly difficult to hot-work. The determining of the correct conditions for piercing, rolling and forging of these alloys by experimentation in the mill often results in large losses of these expensive metals. It also is found that the hot-workability limits of many types vary from heat to heat, and hence poor results are obtained on changing to a new heat after a previous one has rolled satisfactorily. To determine the effect on hot-workability of iron to which various elements have been added, it was necessary to devise a method that could be used on small quantities of metal. In such a method, the minimum number of variables should be present, and the procedure should be simple, quick and correlatable with large-scale hot-working operations. Sauveur,9 in the first Henry Marion Howe lecture in 1924, described the effect of carbon on the ductility of steels in torsion near their critical points. He found that carbon increases the plasticity of gamma iron. In the 1930 Campbell Memorial lecture,10 he gives the effect of carbon, chromium, and chromium and nickel on the ductility of steels under 2000°F. in torsion. Ellis11 has studied the malleability of steels at various elevated temperatures by means of a single-blow drop-hammer test. In this test the percentage decrease in height of standard cylinders is taken as a measure of their malleability. He has shown that in the low-alloy steels studied, carbon has a greater effect than nickel, chromium and vanadium. In 1938 the first tests were run on a new quantitative hot-workability test in the laboratories of the Globe Steel Tubes CO. Thum12 mentioned it in 1940. An illustration of the apparatus was published in January 1942.'' The effect of a few alloying elements on the hot-workability of metals was shown in a description of the test in 1944.14 Description of Test Method The method adopted after a trial of several others is a rapid twisting of bars to failure in a furnace. Presented in this paper is a summary of the results of experiments conducted in both the laboratory and the field during the past three years in connection with casing-perfora. tion problems. Included are studies of gun features that influence bullet performance and penetration, and studies of the effect of perforator bullets on casing and the neat cement in the annulus. Discussion and data are also presented relative to the accuracy of depth measurements in deep wells. Introduction It is a common practice in the oil industry to effect the completion of oil wells by setting and cementing casing through the producing horizons and perforating the section of casing opposite the desired interval by means of a gun lowered into the well on a cable or on the tubing. This practice has been followed for some time, and this method of completion has been given considerable study by the companies that render perforating service as well as by the oil companies that utilize their services. Through continued research on this subject, it has been possible to develop guns, bullets, and powder that will permit controlled firing at great depths, and penetration of as many as two strings of casing. It is the object of this paper to present the results of studies made of gun perforating in both the field and the laboratory. These studies were made to determine the factors that affect penetration of the bullet, burring of the casing, accuracy of depth measurements, and other items. It is hoped that by presenting the results of these investigations a better understanding may be obtained of certain of the factors involved in gun perforating and further investigation of the subject will be prompted. Subsurface Tests A well approximately 9000 ft deep, which was being prepared for abandonment, was selected for subsurface tests of gun-perforating experiments, In preparing the well for the experiment, 51/2-in. casing in the hole was pulled and racked in the derrick. A test section of pipe, which consisted of 65 ft of 5-in. 18-lb J-55 casing centered inside 7-in. 28-lb N-80 casing, was placed in the derrick corner and the annulus between the two pipes was cemented from the bottom up with 161/2 lb per gal neat cement, which was mixed and displaced with a cementing truck in the usual manner. After the cement had been allowed to harden for about a week, the test section was lowered into the hole on the 51/2-in. casing to a depth of 6600 ft by casing measurements. The hole was filled with drilling fluid weighing 10 lb per gallon. A perforating company was called to perforate the pipe, but was not advised that an experiment was being conducted. The company was asked to check the total depth (to cross pins in the bottom of the test section), then to raise the gun a given distance and fire a given number of shots with 1/2-in. bullets, pick up another distance and fire a given number of 3/8-in

Single crystals of each metal were deformed at 77°K and heated at constant rates, variously in the range 0.125" to 4o°Kper min from 77" to -390oK, while being monitored in an X-ray diffractometer. Changes in diffraction-peak heights and line breadths were used to ascertain the temperature ranges of recrystalliza-tion. The results were subjected to the analysis of nicholas' in order to obtain the rate-controlling activation energies,Q. In this analysis no recourse to a separate and distinct nucleation stage is required and the results of studying recrystallization proved consistent with the hypothesis of a constant number of nuclei or equivalent hypotheses. The values Pb = 5.5 ± 0.5 keal per mole Zn ~ 7.5 Sn - 5 Bi - 9. 5 correspond for lead, zinc, and tin to activation energies obtained elsewhere for grain boundary migration, and for bismuth and lead to previous studies of re-crystallization by Barrett.6 This correlation allows the conclusions that interference from recovery was minimal and that the observed recrystallization rates in these pure metals are effectively governed by grain boundary migration. Good agreement was not found between the results of this kind of study in zone-refined aluminum and previous work; and supplementary isothermral experiments involving hardness tests and metallography did not resolve the discrepancy. Nevertheless, at least a range,Q = 11.5 ± 2 keal per mole, can be assigned to the activation energy for boundary migration in aluminum. An experimental study of one aspect of the recrystallization process is presented here for four metals of different crystal structure. The metals chosen for study were all zone-refined to reduce impurity effects, but the attendant high purity presented a difficulty. For any reasonably high driving force a "re-crystallization temperature", TR, is in the range of 0.25 T,, where T, is the absolute melting point, and study was therefore restricted to lower temperatures. An X-ray technique under constant heating-rate conditions adequate above 90°K was devised for the study; in consequence, a newer type of analysis following Nicholas1 had to be used to obtain quantitative information about activation energies. The standard methods of studying recrystallization have involved the comparable analyses of Johnson and Mehl2 and Avrami3 which are reviewed by Burke and Turnbull.* The general analysis4 which is applied only to isothermal studies using any of various investigative techniques states:

Reports received by the Bureau of Mines, Department of Commerce, from State mine inspectors, for November, 1930, showed that 219 men were killed in the coal mines of the United States during the month, an increase of 25 over the previous month and 33 over November, 1929. On the other hand the production of coal decreased, the output of 43,329,000 tons in November being 8,397,000 tons less than in October and 9,005,000 tone less than in November a year ago. The larger number of fatalities accompanied by a smaller output of coal resulted in a higher death rate4 per million tons in November than in the same month last year or in October, 1930. The November rate was 5.05, as compared with 3.55 for November, 1929 and 3.75 for October, 1930. The increase in the rate for the industry as a whole was chargeable entirely to bituminous mines, as the anthracite mines had fewer fatalities in November than in either of the previous months to which reference has been made. Reports for bituminous mines alone showed that accidents at this class of mines resulted in a death rate of 5.12, based on 195 fatalities and a production of 38,122,000 tons. This rate indicated an increase of 55 per cent over the rate for October, of the same year, and 72 per cent over the rate for November, 1929. The October record was 146 fatalities and 44,150,000 tons, and that for November a year ago was 138 deaths and a production of 46,514,000 tons.

In the early days, most smelters were erected in nonarable land and at some distance from settled communities. The movement of population, which resulted in many instances from employment at the smelters, has brought to most smelterman in the United States the problem of preventing damage to plant and animal life in the territory adjacent to the smelters by sulphur dioxide gas (S02). This problem has been met, broadly, in two ways: (1) By diluting and removing the S02 by means of air currents and (2) by converting the S02 to a liquid or solid compound of sulphur and disposing of the compound.

Seismic tomographic imaging, based on the same principles as a medical CAT Scan (Computer-Aided-Tomography). has been used for many years in the oil industry for large-scale subsurface stratigraphic characterization. and has most recently been applied to various structure- and stress-related problems in the coal industry. New developments in signal processing have greatly enhanced the speed, resolution, and range of applications of topographic imaging in underground settings, and recent innovations in data acquisition hardware have further increased data reliability and repeatability. Whereas past structure mapping applications relied on Seismic velocity and/or attenuation tomopraphy within an enclosed seismic source gram receiver array, recent developments in "True Reflective Tomography- (TRT TM) have expanded the application of this technology considerably. For example, in-seam TRT TM seismic reflection tray now he used to image structure, and/or old workings from one general location in the mine face areas of mains and panel developments) well ahead of planned developments largely eliminating the need to probe-hole drill on regular intervals. This new reflective technology bas also been combined with traditional cross-hole seismic tomography-providing a comprehensive, powerful tool for velocity attenuation. and reflective imagine utilizing the same source/receiver array data sets (borehole-to-borehole. borehole-to-entry and entry-to-entry). These new developments in data acquisition and image processing have greatly expanded the variety of applications for tomographic site characterization allowing the mine operator considerable flexibility to cost-effectively characterize previously inaccessible areas of the property. This paper presents examples of 2-D and 3-D .seismic topographic imaging applied to (1) the location of old works in Appalachian room-and-pillar operations and (2) the identification of anomalous zones ahead of mining/tunneling developments these applications demonstrate the state-of-the-art in seismic ground imaging using velocity, attenuation. aril reflection techniques land combinations thereon, and further illustrate the flexibility of data acquisition from a variety of tinning arid tunneling settings. Recent examples are presented from projects in the United States and Europe.
